Gold is actively precipitating at grades up to 80 g/tonne at and near the surface of the Waiotapu geothermal system, located in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. Many characteristics of this active system makes it analogous to the environment deduced for epithermal precious metal mineralisation in the circum Pacific region.The near surface area of the geothermal system is approximately 17 km2, caused to an extent by the upflow of deep, neutral pH fluids being deflected into a lateral flow of several km. This fluid has pervasively altered the rhyolite pyroclastic and ash deposits to an assemblage generally characterised by the term propylitic; major vein mineralisation is not observed. The temperatures at the 1100 m limit of drilling are 300¦C, and decrease to the surface along a boiling point curve.Condensation of steam and H S (subsequently oxidised) at the surface (derived 2from deep boiling) results in the formation of heated acid sulphate waters. These have caused a shallow (50 m) cap of advanced argillic alteration. Mixing of this oxidised condensate with the deep neutral pH fluid appears to be the principle cause of gold deposition from thiosulphide complexes. The major focus of gold mineralisation is in Champagne Pool, a hot spring which fills one of several 900 year old hydrothermal eruption craters.

The mining industry often embraces mine closure criteria that require the reinstatement of predisturbance or even presettlement (ie historic) ecosystems. However, the extent and severity of disturbance associated with most mining activities mean that critical physical and biological characteristics are irreversibly altered. Consequently, it is rare that a reconstructed landscape can support ecosystems even close to the historic condition, and this rarity is reflected in the small number of mine leases that have been extinguished by attainment of such completion criteria. Novel ecosystems are defined as those in which some or all physical and biotic components are irreversibly different from the historic condition. Recognition of the concept of novel ecosystems allows mine closure criteria to be set according to attainable physical and biological conditions that provide safe, stable and manageable environments with acceptable ecological functions. We propose that a landscape that first maximises physical stability and economy yet will provide a range of environments for vegetation communities and fauna habitats that may be very different from those existing prior to a disturbance should be considered suitable alternatives to, eg targeting idealised historic environments. As a result, mine closure criteria should be established by detailed description of the best attainable physical conditions, with negotiated identification and testing of the most appropriate biological systems for the various parts of the reconstructed landscape. As a general practice, revegetation would use native, but not necessarily local species if the new physical environment is not conducive to the survival and growth of local species. These new ecosystems would need to be managed in perpetuity, although the intensity of management might be low if landscape design and engineering are combined with appropriate species introductions. Here, we suggest an abbreviated procedure that may be adapted in light of local conditions and circumstances for guiding decisions influencing the physical and biological properties of reconstructed landscapes that will enable novel ecosystems to meet realistic closure criteria.CITATION:Doley, D and Audet, P, 2014. Mining is nothing but an art - besides being a science - of extracting valuable minerals from the womb of the mother earth. In this gigantic task, a large number of machinery and equipment are employed judiciously. Wire ropes play a vital role in lifting or hoisting men and materials under hostile/adverse working conditions and constitute a major item of investment on machinery/equipment. The economy of using a wire rope is a concern for engineers, users and the planners. The economic use of wire ropes for mining purposes largely depends on the following factors;Mechanical design considerations - which include tensile strength of wires, elasticity, resistance to abrasion and crushing, fatigue values, static and dynamic loads on wire ropes, factor of safety, fleet angle, etc. Metallurgical consideration - Composition and heat treatment of wire materials, defects like inclusions and voids, surface quality factor, lubrications, micro structural parameters. Operational consideration - Seizing and cutting of rope, storage, care and maintenance, cutting back, etc. Environmental consideration - Temperature and humidity, pit condition, dust, corrosive atmosphere, etc. In the present paper, an attempt will be made to suggest steps for achieving optimum economy while using the wire ropes for extraction of precious minerals and coal keeping in view the points noted earlier. Once technical viability is established, economy is the ultimate consideration for an industry for safe hoisting of men and material.

However, the real leadership came from his lieutenants who provided the important yin and yang. The GM commercial provided the tools, processes, systems and the bottom line focus. The GM operations focused on culture, leadership, training and sustainability. The Honeymoon nickel sulphide deposits are located 45 km south of Wiluna in the 2.7 Ga old Agnew-Wiluna greenstone belt in the NE of the Yilgarn Craton (Figure 1). Both disseminated and massive nickel sulphide deposits are present within the deformed and metamorphosed Honeymoon Well ultramafic complex and are hosted by distinctly different komatiitic lithologies (Gole et al, 1996). The deposit styles and host rock lithologies reflect formation in markedly different volcanic settings. Metasomatism has affected parts of the ultramafic complex, including sections of the sulphide deposits, and has had a marked impact on mineralogy and bulk sulphide compositions. The present indicated resource is 158 Mt at 0.71 per cent Ni in four deposits (0.4 per cent Ni cut-off, resources above 300 m depth, December 1995). This includes a massive sulphide resource of 2.5 Mt at 3.36 per cent Ni.

The flooding of open strip coal mines in the Bowen Basin and Hunter Valley Coalfields of Eastern Australia has the potential to soften the spoil and floor materials to produce “mud”. This mud can act as a slip plane or weak zone when spoil is dumped into it, resulting in geotechnical instabilities. Once mud has formed, typical handling techniques include its costly removal by mechanical means, or its isolation and capping.There are little data available on the moisture state and shear strength of the capped mud. To investigate the effectiveness of isolation and capping, research has been conducted using a large slurry consolidometer (150 mm in diameter by up to 410 mm in height) to simulate capping in situ. Once consolidated, the mud was subjected to shear strength testing in a direct shear box measuring 60 mm by 60 mm by about 20 mm high. The shear strength of the consolidated mud was compared to that of competent, fresh spoil, a mixture of spoil and mud, and to completely degraded spoil (mud alone).These results have been used as inputs in stability calculations using the commercial computer program Slide 7.0, which demonstrates the strong influence of consolidation of the mud on overall low wall slope stability. Field investigations recently undertaken by Utah Development Company (U.D.C.) have been developed to allow the assessment of ground conditions relevant to the use of large bucket wheel excavators for pre-stripping overburden. "Bucketwheel diggability" predictions were made on the basis of a wedge test which was perform- -ed in the field on nominal 150 mm diameter drill core samples. Specific separation force (calculated from the wedge test results) for different rock horizons were theoretically related to the excavation rates of various sized bucketwheels, i.e., "bucketwheel diggability". The specific separation force was shown to vary with lithology, structure, weathering and moisture changes. By correlating these features between boreholes, an overall assessment of bucketwheel diggability was then made. The approach adopted to assess bucket- wheel diggability incorporated various levels of investigation. Initially, a reconnaissance stage provided information from widely spaced 150 mm cored holes to compare and contrast areas with differing bucketwheel digging char- -acteristics. Northparkes Mines is a joint venture between Rio Tinto and the Sumitomo group and is operated by Rio Tinto to produce copper concentrate from ore sourced from open cut and underground. Underground ore is mined with an owner operator workforce using the block cave method from the E26 deposit, with the first lift of the cave now completed. Development of the Lift 2 block cave commenced in March 2001 using a contract workforce. The Lift 2 Project required the mining of 14 700 m of decline and lateral development to establish a new mining horizon at the 9450 level and to develop two new conveyor declines. Also included in the scope was the excavation of a Crusher chamber to house the jaw-gyratory crusher. This paper describes the excavation of the hydroset chamber and orepass that sit immediately underneath the Lift 2 Crusher chamber. It includes risk assessment, planning, development of method statements and standard operating procedures, through to the excavation of the orepass and the installation of ground support in seismically active ground. There was a major ground failure in the backs of the conveyor feeder chamber during its excavation, which affected the excavation of the orepass due to its proximity to the breakthrough site.

The Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories Ltd. (A.C.I.R.L.) MINVENT computer program can be used to simulate existing and projected colliery ventilation requirements. New collieries can be planned using a database of ventilation parameters which were ascertain- ed by A.C.I.R.L. surveys at selected collieries in N.S.W. and Queensland. Several techniques are used in both the formulation of the database and in the evaluat- ion of a ventilation system, prior to analysis by the MINVENT program. The analysis of a ventilation system requires the measurement of air quantities, pressures and hence airway resistances. All resistances are calculated at standard air density of 1.205 kg/m3. Air densities are derived from barometric pressure and wet and dry bulb temperature readings. Airway frictional and shock losses, leakage through stoppings and overcasts, flow of air through regulators, face resistance and resistance of anomalous ventilation features are related to the typical Australian measured data presented.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines installed surface and subsurface instruments at a mine site in Colorado to monitor and characterize the overburden response to longwall mining. Instrumentation included a time-domain reflectometry (TDR) cable, a multiple-point borehole extensometer (MPBX), vertical- deformation surface monuments, and in-mine pressure cells for monitoring abutment, pillar, and gob loads with respect to the longwall face position. The purpose of the study was to collect data that could be analyzed to correlate the design of the mine layout to the resulting overburden failure response. Determining the extent of caving and fracturing is important in the and and semiarid Western United States because of the possible consequences to the fragile underground hydrologic systems upon which the land owners and users depend. This study is unique from past investigations because the overburden contains massive sandstone members that impose special conditions on the caving process and pressure redistribution above the longwall panels. This paper presents the results of this correlation study.

BHP Western Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) operations use a suite of slope monitoring systems which are deployed to operational areas based on the ground control risk. Slope Radars are one system used within WAIO, having recently deployed and integrated a network of 22 radar systems across the operations. The integration required the development of supporting network architecture, infrastructure, virtualised hosting, security protocols and a technology support model. This has enabled data transfer between the physical radar systems located in open pits, to on-site offices, a vendor supported remote control room in Indonesia and the WAIO Integrated Remote Operations Centre for data analysis and monitoring of system and displacement alarms 24/7. The typical technical skillset of a Geotechnical Engineer does not include the knowledge and capability to understand and develop the supporting IT infrastructure required for establishing an integrated radar monitoring network. This paper will provide a discussion of the technology considerations for integrating radar systems and highlight the importance of the developed partnerships between internal geotechnical and technology teams and the external vendor team to ensure a reliable, robust and scalable slope monitoring solution.

The selection of samples for metallurgical test work is generally focused on providing geologically representative samples. One of the major problems experienced with metallurgical test work using drill hole data, is the small sample sets selected for metallurgical testing. Major process and financial decisions are being made from results obtained using snapshot samples. Snapshot samples means that samples are basically selected only by grade and spatial location with the assumption that the rest of the orebody or portion of orebody is similar and will respond metallurgically the same way – ie the assumption is that the mineralogy and lithology are basically the same as the test sample. From the test work, algorithms were usually developed and used to describe throughput and recovery using some explanatory variables including grade (mineral chemistry) and ore hardness. These algorithms were then used in the recovery models to determine tonnes produced and plant throughput. However, the metallurgical parameters are a function of many geological factors including grade, lithology, alteration, mineralogy, spatial relationships and SG. In previous years, the limited mineralogical information available was deemed enough for the metallurgist to make decisions as to how many samples are needed to evaluate the metallurgical performance of the ore during processing, and subsequently the basis for the plant design. If the orebody is consistent and not complex or refractory (thus, relative simple lithology), then only spatial and grade samples will be needed to evaluate the throughput and recovery, so limited mineralogical information may be acceptable. There is now, however, an increasing realisation that the mineralogy and geology change, as do the metallurgical characteristics of the orebody, so limited samples may not be sufficient for effective metallurgical test work.It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the effect correct mineralogical information has on the subsequent metallurgical test work program and process selection using a case study. Factors such as type of rock, rainfall and topography are thought to influence the minerals that ultimately form in various orebodies, with the result that different orebodies often react differently during metallurgical test work programs. It is therefore important to obtain accurate mineralogical and elemental deportment data, which will also indicate where the valuable metal containing minerals are located within the orebody. The better you plan and execute your metallurgical test work program during the early phases, the more accurate the decision-making process will be during the selection phase. Improved integration between geology and metallurgy data gathering (geometallurgy) during early phases will result in more accurate predictions with regard to throughput and recovery during modelling and process. Equipment selection will be considerably simpler in later phases with early planning, with improved mine and process scheduling and subsequent net present value (NPV).

In the past two and a half years, over 40 000 metalliferous mining and related services personnel have been trained through an Australian Generic Safety Induction system. This is almost half of AustraliaÆs metalliferous mining related workforce. This remarkable industry acceptance and delivery of safety courses is supported by Acacia Resources, Great Central Mines, Homestake, Newcrest Mining and WMC Resources, amongst hundreds of other mining, exploration and major contracting and services companies. MARCSTA; the Mining and Resources Contractors Safety Training Association (a pro-active not-for-profit self-help group of 24 major contracting companies) developed this generic safety induction. MARCSTA set out to find the æcommon groundÆ necessary to help address the evident safety problems and cost of re-training that were plaguing development of an internationally competitive and productive export industry. The incredible expansion of Australian mining during the decade fuelled a need for out-sourcing, resulting in much larger numbers of contractors on-site. At the same time, changes within Australian legislation, community expectations and the development of huge fly-in/fly-out operations and widespread skills shortages led to a rapid labour turnover and a higher paid workforce. Many Australian mining houses also ran international operations, particularly in South East Asia and head hunted people across the world. The skill levels fluctuated and fell at some local operations. Employers could no longer rely on systematic in-house training of permanent employees to improve safety and productivity as workers could and often did move on. Serious discrepancies in both quality and quantity of safety induction training and work practices occurred. Repetitive, boring and ineffective safety training became an embarrassing and costly burden for companies and workers alike. Then a spate of mining deaths sparked highly publicity, workforce concern and a demand for improvement from government, unions and corporate stakeholders. MARCSTA recognised it had to develop a high-quality safety-training program to satisfy the needs of all employers and be acceptable to others within the industry. This induction system had to be flexible enough to meet differences in legislation between states and industry sectors and be portable to enable cost and time savings for the new transient workforce. Changes in the last two years as a result of evaluating and incorporating various Taskforce inquiries into underground mining fatalities later led to the development of the MARCSTA Underground Safety Induction. This logical development added to the run away success of MARCSTAÆs General Safety Induction and was seen to be essential for many surface mines that were planning to develop underground operations. There are many lessons that MARCSTA learnt during its development that Pacific and South East Asian mining operations can benefit from. The most important of these are the support of stakeholders within industry and the recognition of higher safety and health expectations from workers and government. This goes hand-in-hand with the productivity and return on investment expectations of companies and their shareholders.

Uncertainty and debate currently pervade the mining industry in New Zealand. The operational uncertainties, whether external (eg gold prices, the exchange rate), or internal (eg coal expansion difficulties), are large. In addition, many wider factors which influence mining are in a state of flux. State Coal Mines, the operating branch of the Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy I may be made a state corporation, with the remaining Mines Division functions being revamped. The agencies administering environmental legislation are to be restructured. Mining legislation amendments have been proposed and then dropped, and the area is now to be reviewed (The Press, 31 July 1985). Some mining licences have been withdrawn, and become the subject of heated debate in the community (The Press, 19 July 1985, and subsequent letters to the editor).

THE completion of the Linda incline man and supply haft at the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Oompany's mine led to an investigation of the various safety gears in general use in mining shafts. One of these gears completely fulfilled the necessaryconditions. This paper endeavours to give a description of the man car and safety gears now operating in the before mentioned shaft, together with the main considerations leading to their design and sub equent adoption. Fig 1 diagramatically shows a longitudinal section of this shaft.

A case study is presented that details the safety journey at a North American project involving two major contracts: a 1000 m shaft recovery and rehabilitation, and the development of a drainage gallery in a large open pit operation. In the early stages of the contracts, there were a number of incidents that created tension between the owner and contractor, which resulted in the contractor being placed on a final warning with almost imminent potential termination. As a result of this, it was agreed to initiate a focused safety recovery plan as a ‘last chance’.Over a period of two years, the engagement and consequent performance of the contractor was turned around, steadily working to set it up for success such that in one of the contract work areas, a record of ‘one year LTI (lost time injury) free’ was achieved. The journey involved the owner and the contractor teams working cohesively to educate all parties in the safety requirements and, most importantly, providing the context and understanding for certain requirements being put in place. Early on in the process, it was recognised that the owner team unknowingly was an impediment in that they did not fully understand the safety requirements and so was not able to lead the way for the contractor effectively. The journey to rectify the situation was supported and followed up by focused engagement with the project team, which generated a progressive improvement in a very challenging environment.In particular, the contractor turnaround was significant and of enough value for the contractor to ultimately export some of the safety systems from this site to other contract sites.
