Many mine accidents will affect the mine ventilation system when they occur. At present, there is a lack of monitoring means to capture the occurrence of accidents in time by monitoring the ventilation system, so as to take emergency measures to reduce the loss of personnel and property. Pressure wave is an elastic wave existing in air. Most accidents in mine will cause obvious changes of pressure wave. It is an innovative idea to monitor the occurrence of accidents in mine by measuring pressure wave. The development and functions of the pressure monitoring device and related software are introduced in detail. The pressure wave monitoring test is carried out in San Xavier underground mining laboratory, and the D-wave and S-wave waveform data are collected. The waveform characteristics are analysed, and the main frequency distribution of the pressure wave is found to be within 1 Hz by using FFT. At the same time, the influence of the propagation distance of the pressure wave on the waveform is analysed. The propagation velocity of D-wave and S-wave are roughly calculated, and they are 279.6 m/s and 397.3 m/s respectively. S-wave is slightly faster than D-wave. Although there are errors and uncertainties in the test, the test verified the feasibility of the existence and collection of pressure waves in the ventilation roadway, and provides a method for the future study of the propagation of pressure waves in the mine ventilation system.

Recent advances in computer simulation together with field measurements of caving and microseismic activity about longwall panels, has allowed a much better understanding of the caving process and the variability due to geology. The joint research between SCT Operations and CSIRO Division of Exploration and Mining has initiated new methods of computational modelling predicting various caving patterns and strata failure far ahead of the longwall face. This work was validated by field measurements of caving and microseismic activity at the longwall face.The rock fracture distribution and the caving characteristics of a range of strata sections have been simulated by computer methods. Validation studies of the method were addressed together with case studies. The interaction of caving with support convergence and face control is presented. The method allows the simulation of longwall support behaviour under various geological conditions. The system also allows a prediction of the monitoring data, which is best suited to give an early warning of weighting events or signal various key caving characteristics.

Indiscriminate surface disposal of coal waste in New South Wales has created a serious fire hazard and increased air pollution.A survey of numerous dumps, as well as particular investigations of one badly-constructed dump, showed that factors conducive to ignition and propagation of fires in waste dumps were high contents of combustible material (coal, pyrite, wood. paper. grease), size segregation leading to ready movement of air and moisture shape of the dump (e.g. protruding sections or porous junctions), high ambient air temperatures, bush fires, and even deliberate lighting.Control methods applied in the past tended to be haphazard and unsuccessful. Under Australian conditions the technique recommended for control of existing dump fires, based on experimental work, is to spray the dump with a chemical fire retardant (e.g. a 2 per cent solution of sodium tetra borate and ammonium phosphate), to cover the dump with a suitable soil, and to seal the surface with a I per cent solution of aluminium sulphate or sodium metasilicate. The recommended method of dump construction to prevent fires is to level and seal the site, to construct a firebreak around the dump area, and to build a rectangular dump with minimum size segregation and compacted surfaces.

A two-stage stochastic mixed integer non-linear program is formulated for a mining complex to optimise strategic and tactical plans. The objective is to find the near optimal decisions for a mineral supply chain in the context with uncertainties in both ore supply and the commodity market (price and demand). The endogenous spot price in the commodity market and long-term sales contracts are considered in the formulation of the mining complex’s optimisation model and an ad hoc heuristic is developed to deal with the throughput – and head-grade-dependent recovery rate in processing plants. Numerical results indicate that the proposed heuristic is effective and efficient in numerical tests. Based on the proposed model and heuristic, a long-term contract design strategy is proposed for making decisions on the contract price and strategic investments. The Great Artesian Basin (GAB) contains one of the largest reserves of fresh water in the world. The volume in storage is enormous, being estimated at nearly 65 000 million megalitres (ML). Development of this resource, dominantly for the pastoral industry, began in the late-1800s and quickly accelerated. With exploitation of the resource, artesian pressures declined almost as rapidly. This loss of head is a result of the total discharge from the basin and much of this discharge is waste of water. The waste through uncontrolled bores and inefficient distribution systems still amounts to about 75 per cent of all discharge. However, the volume in storage has hardly been depleted. The major concern is the effect of withdrawal on artesian pressures. Due to the size of the Basin, the relatively flat gradients and low permeability, the movement of water through the aquifers is extremely slow and independent of recharge. Hence, the normal concepts of sustainable yield (ie discharge should equal recharge) cannot be applied to the Basin as a whole as travel times do not allow for the effect of recharge to be seen away from the outcrop areas within management timeframes. The large volume in storage, though, can provide an extensive buffer to the impacts of temporary water needs. This effect should be considered when assessing the acceptability of fixed life projects such as mines and the extracted volumes from their operations. Identifying a sustainable yield involves balancing the acceptability of the economic, environmental and social costs with the associated discharge and fall in head, to arrive at an acceptable balance.

The mining industry, and in fact the world, has undergone significant changes in the past five to ten years, ranging from the metals boom, the global financial crisis and the rise and fall of national economies, to name just a few. There has been a focus on sustainable development for projects and operations in the mining industry, mainly pushed onto the industry by communities, governments and other agencies. While sustainable development and operation is a worthy priority for mining operations, discussions with mining industry personnel (with a strong slant on the mineral processing perspective) have shown other issues have surpassed the typical issues of water resources, energy availability and the environment. These include staff turnover and skills shortages, extracting metal from more complex orebodies and the uptake of new step-change technology.A number of key operating mineral processing personnel were interviewed to determine their perspective on the current issues facing the mining industry. Blasting is a common practice in mining whereby solid rock is fractured, using explosives, to a more manageable size. The effectiveness of blasting influences a number of downstream activities such as shovel digability, crusher throughput and mill throughput. As the cost of explosives is relatively low compared to milling costs (mainly due to power consumption), blasting practices can be optimised so that the downstream processes are made more efficient, and an overall cost saving made. This is the basis of the Mine to Mill approach. The effectiveness of the blasting is influenced by two main factors, the blasting practices used (eg explosive amount and type) and the geology of the area. As the geology cannot be altered, the blasting practices must be refined to create optimum blasting. Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston operation, located in the heart of the Kalgoorlie Goldfields is the largest gold mine in Australia. Mine to Mill at KCGM has had varied success, with initial positive indications being lessened by a number of factors, including the increase in the amount of voids.

PT Freeport Indonesia operates a copper-gold mine located in the remote highlands of Papua, Indonesia, about 3500 km east of Jakarta. Currently, the district produces about 240 000 tonnes per day (tpd) of which about 45 000 tpd come from the DOZ Block Cave and the rest is mined from the Grasberg Open Pit. Over the next ten years, ore production from large block caves in the area is expected to reach about 200 000 tpd, replacing a large part of the production from the Grasberg Pit. Block cave mining alters the hydrological characteristics of the area being mined and when the cave expresses itself at the surface in the form of subsidence, it increases the entrapment area for surface water. Operating a large block cave mine in a region with an average annual rainfall of 5500 mm in steep mountainous terrain and complex geological and hydrological features presents a challenging scenario for dewatering or depressurisation of the area. The high rainfall infiltration and entrapment in stacked mines operating within an essentially single orebody, coupled with the presence of fine-grained and clayey material within the draw points of the block cave, creates mud rushes or wet muck spills, which can endanger the personnel and interrupt production. This paper outlines the problems caused by high water inflow into the DOZ Block Cave and the efforts undertaken to ensure the safety of the miners and continued achievement of desired production rates from underground mining in the district.

The establishment of the Imperial Smelting Furnace at Sulphide Coporation Pty. Limited for the smelting of zinc and lead made it necessary to design and install sintering capacity to produce approximately 500 t.p.d. of zinc-lead sinter. The updraught sintering process installed is a recent development and the plant was designed with adequate flexibility and equipment to enable operating staff to investigate the process and achieve maximum production under optimum operating conditions.Sulphur dioxide gases from the sinter machine are passed to a contact acid plant for the manufacture of sulphuric acid.

At Binebase mineralisation is hosted within an andesitic Neogene volcaniclastic succession on Sangihe Island, Indonesia. Two major alteration types occur; an initial widespread phyllic assemblage of quartz -illite with chlorite, smectite, gypsum and pyrite, and a superimposed quartz - barite - sulphide assemblage. The phyllic alteration arose from a neutral to weakly acidic hydrothermal solution of greater than 200 degrees C, and the quartz - barite - sulphide assemblage arose from a cooler slightly more acidic fluid. This second alteration event is interpreted to have selectively replaced permeable volcaniclastic breccias and coarse lithic tuffs within the altered sequence. Gold and silver mineralisation is associated with the latter alteration, and is locally controlled by the degree of silicification and sulphide abundance. The sulphides present are pyrite, covellite and chalcopyrite. The sulphides are very fine grained with colloform and framboidal textures and were deposited contemporaneously with the bulk silicification of the coarse sediments. A large portion of the mineralised rock has been oxidised to a quartz - barite -limonite - goethite - jarosite assemblage.Coincident gold, silver and antimony geochemical soil anomalies gave the best correlation with anomalous gold and silver grades in bedrock as identified by drilling. Resistivity proved a reliable geophysical method for delineating zones of silicification.

The ability to simulate the stability of post-mining landscapes over time scales ranging from decades to millennia is a critical element in the assessment of closure designs for uranium mines. Landscape Evolution Modelling (LEM) technologies provide a means to simulate and assess the long-term geomorphic stability of a conceptual rehabilitated landform for periods of thousands of years. However, a major issue with simulations derived from long-term modelling are the limitations associated with the data inputs. Specifically, simulations which utilise historic rainfall data only represent the variability of rainfall events that have occurred over a relatively short period. Consequently, these simulations run the risk of not accounting for the full range of rainfall variability that might be expected over an extended period of up to 10 000 years. Therefore, for this study a probabilistic approach was adopted to generate a stochastic synthetic rainfall data set to produce a series of unique rainfall scenarios, each representing a simulated period of 100 years. Importantly, utilising such an approach allows uncertainty in predictions to be better accounted for and provides a range or probability of likely outcomes.In this study, the effect of ten individual rainfall scenarios are assessed in terms of their impact on the predicted erosion and denudations rates produced by the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM for a conceptual rehabilitated landform of the Ranger Uranium Mine (RUM) in the Northern Territory of Australia, focusing on the Corridor Creek catchment (Figure 1). While legislation requires this site to be erosionally stable for at least 10 000 years (Commonwealth of Australia, 1987), here the focus is on the first one hundred years of landscape evolution, as this is the period in which erosion is expected to be higher, with limited vegetation cover or pedogenic development in the initial decades after rehabilitation. The successful dissolution of the valuable metal components of a solid phase is often a basic requirement for a successful hydrometallurgical treatment process. Sulphide concentrates are often an intermediate product in the production of refined metals. These concentrates need to be further processed to realise the contained metal values in a useful form. Pyrometallurgical techniques have tended to dominate, at least the initial treatment of metal sulphide concentrates. The technology described, Activox«, has been developed specifically for the hydrometallurgical treatment of these sulphide mineral concentrates, in particular those containing copper, nickel or gold. The Activox« dissolution technology coupled with the use of existing, or newly developed, downstream processing techniques, offers alternative processing options for the recovery of full value, saleable metal products. The technology is suitable for application down to relatively small scales opening up the opportunity for on-site production of metals even at modest scale mining Operations.

The basic methods to remove material from underground mines are to: convey continuously, batch in trucks, or batch in a shaft hoisting system. A critical aspect in shaft hoisting is accurately batch loading the conveyance or skip. During the 20th century, the almost universally accepted method of loading was via a measuring flask. A measured quantity of material was filled into the flask as the conveyance traveled through the shaft and then, when the conveyance arrived at the loading position, it was ædumpedÆ into the skip for hoisting. Two skip loading conveyor systems have been developed in Australia: BHP BillitonÆs Cannington Hoisting System, installed in 1996, is believed to be the first conveyor loading system designed for two skips. Two parallel conveyors were installed with a two-way gate controlling feed onto each belt. Cannington was ideally suited to conveyor loading as the very high ore density and relatively low production rate required a relatively small volumetric storage capacity on the weighed belt. Newcrest MiningÆs Telfer Hoisting System, which is to be commissioned in 2005, consists of a single slewing conveyor loading each skip with 32 tonnes of ore. The development of this system eliminates the two-way transfer, improves the accessibility and minimises the excavation required. While every hoisting system must be considered on its merits, conveyor loading offers significant advantages to the Mining Industry in the 21st century.

BHP Billiton (BHPB) was the first company to start iron ore mining in the Pilbara at Mt Goldsworthy in 1966 through Goldsworthy Mining Limited (GML - then Consolidated Goldfields Australia, Cyprus Mines and Utah). Operations later started at Newman on Mt Whaleback in 1969 with the Mt Newman Mining Joint Venture (MNM û then comprising American Metals Climax û AMAX, Colonial Sugar Refineries û CSR and BHP). In 1986 it acquired majority ownership of MNM, and at the same time the previously 100 per cent BHPB owned but undeveloped Yandi property came on board. Purchase of Jimblebar (formerly McCameyÆs Monster) occurred in 1990 and full ownership of Goldsworthy followed in 1991. With the exception of Jimblebar (100 per cent owned), all mines are now 85 per cent BHPB and the balance with Itochu and Mitsui. This evolution of the company resulted in an eclectic mix of mines/ores, each with their varied exploration and evaluation histories. Discussion of some aspects of these histories, and reflections on changes in exploration-related activities with particular reference to discussion of advances in geological understanding since the 1960s forms the basis of this paper. BHPB presently has open cut mines at four main centres û Newman, Jimblebar, Marillana Creek (Yandi) and Yarrie û and is currently developing the former GML Area C near Yandi. With the exception of NewmanÆs Mt Whaleback mine and immediate satellites, all are contract operated. Ore is carried on BHPB railroads (696 km total) for export through the companyÆs Nelson Point or Finucane Island shipping facilities at Port Hedland. Some is directed to the BHPB Boodarie Iron hot briquetted iron plant near Finucane Island. Over 73 Mt of ore was produced by BHPB in calendar 2001, and the company has now mined over 1500 Mt in Western Australia since their operations at Yampi Sound first started in 1956.

Industry, especially extractive industry, must now give serious attention to the impact its operations have on the natural environment and on the economic, social, and cultural context within which it operates.   While this obligation is statutorily managed, there has been a recent shift towards a culture of self responsibility. Industry is now talking about earning its ôsocial licence to operateö and the importance of maintaining the ôtriple bottom lineö, thus adding environmental and social performance to the usual financial criteria used to measure organisational performance. The social context within which companies operate has also become more sensitive with industry responding to a growing public expectation that it conduct itself in a way that strives for sustainability by operating and developing in a way that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.   There are glowing accounts of industries engaging and collaborating with the communities within which they are based. In amongst these are also some disasters which result from cultural assumptions, industry created dependencies and the failure to attain community buy-in despite significant investment by the industry involved.   There are also remarkable stories of communities, and action groups within communities, being a significant catalyst for positive change of their natural, cultural and social environment. In amongst these stories there are also accounts of long and drawn out battles; adversarial situations where no one wins; a litany of mistrust, tricks and tactics, with the better resourced party ultimately achieving its primary objectives at the cost of the other (and at the cost of any potential fruitful, mutual relationships).   So what makes the difference in achieving the positive rather than negative outcomes? The answer lies in the way the outcomes are achieved. Building relationships based on good communication, respect for divergent views, mutual understanding, and the development of trust and empathy, makes it possible to identify shared goals and objectives that best meet the needs of all parties.   Research indicates the mining industry is making good progress in developing policy and commitment to community development and engagement but that, ætranslating commitments into improved practices at the site level remains one of the industryÆs toughest challengesÆ. (Australian Government - Community Engagement and Development Handbook October 2006 @ page 49.)   This paper considers the merits of a process of community collaboration and what it has to offer in terms of meeting that challenge.

New high-strength Zn alloys for moulds are demanded from the automobile and electric industries in Japan, because the s rength of Zn moulds is still not high enough for the mass production. There are two approaches to improve the strength of Zn alloys. One is to increase the Al content. ZA alloys (ZA-8, ZA-12, ZA-27) were developed through this approach. The other is to increase the Cu content. But it is known that an increase in Cu generally depresses the castability of Zn alloys, so that the alloys with increased Cu have been rarely studied until now. In this study a reconciliation between the strengthening and the castability of Zn alloys by enriching both with Al and Cu has been attempted. Accordingly we have studied on the Zn alloys containing 4 to 25 mass per cent Al and to 24 mass per cent Cu have been studied. Their fluidity, which primarily corresponds to the castability of the alloy, were measured first and 19 alloys were selected based upon their fluidities and casting temperatures. Mainly the mechanical properties of all 19 alloys were tested and some were found to be excellent in both strength and castability. Z1009 (Zn-IOAI-9Cu-0.02Mg alloy) cast in a sand mould has the tensile strength of 360 MPa while ZAS (Zn-4AI-3Cu-0.04Mg alloy), which is the most popular alloy for moulds, is 215 MPa. Z2520 (Zn-25AI-20Cu-0.02Mg alloy) cast in a sand mould has a Vickers hardness of 178, compared to 107 for ZAS and 104 for ZA-27 (Zn-27AI-2Cu-0.02Mg). Furthermore the castability of Z1009 is as good as that of ZAS. The underside shrinkage occuring in casting ZA-27 is restrained in Z2520.

Modelling of industrial coal flotation based on data collected in several Central Queensland flotation plants and supplemented by laboratory data is discussed. The model is kinetic in form and provides the basis of an automatic control system. The important features of the model are, 1. a distribution of flotation rates for each species of particles corresponding to the range of particle sizes, 2. a physical restriction on the removal rate of solids in cells where froth 'overloading' occurs. In this condition the removal rate of solids is proportional to the removal rate of water, 3. enhanced particle floatability due to increasing collector addition where froth overloading does not occur, 4. a second mechanism of recovery of all particles by mechanical associ- ation with water. This mechanism is particularly important in the recovery of fine high-ash species.

A solid electrolyte technique has been used to measure the activity of cobalt in liquid cobalt-gold alloys containing between 0.085 and 0.50 mole fraction of cobalt, and for temperatures from just above the liquidus to around 1550 K. The system exhibits positive deviation from ideality, both in the activities of cobalt and gold, and in the enthalpy and excess entropy of mixing. The results agree with previous measurements using a Knudsen cell - mass spectrometer technique, but differ from those reported for a gas equilibration method. The data have been used to calculate the activity coefficient of cobalt oxide in silica saturated iron silicate slags and to express the solubility of cobalt in such slags as a function of cobalt activity and oxygen pressure.

"Dwindling commodity prices are forcing today’s mining operations to increase output. Sometimes the solution is to upgrade the existing infrastructure; however, in most cases it has to be achieved with the same or reduced workforce and with the same equipment capacity through improved process efficiency and higher uptime.Measure, Manage and Improveis the mantra for this years’ Mill Operators’ Conference and while this in most cases relates to the above process efficiency, Siemens has set its focus on the availability and uptime aspect since unscheduled downtime is one of the biggest threats to any grinding operation. Pinion misalignments, resonance, unbalance and bearing and gear meshing faults in geared trains, as well as long-term changes in the condition of the mechanical components or structures and auxiliary systems in gearless systems are the main reasons for unscheduled downtimes in today’s mill drive trains. Our paper outlines the efforts that have gone into adapting conventional condition monitoring methods in conventional, pinion driven mill drive trains as well as gearless systems to capture the gradual deterioration of wearing parts or structural changes in the drive train not only on fixed speed application but also on variable speed applications with multiple operating points. The paper further explores the use of condition monitoring systems as a tool to assess spare thermal motor capacity to potentially push equipment beyond its nameplate rating, along with the process that was followed to correlate measured frequency spectra and envelopes to ambient and load data to understand the kinematics of the drive train.Citation:Neurohr, M, Stratton, S and Roesch, T, 2016. The O.K. deposit occurs within a belt of cherts and spilitised basic volcanics near the western margin of the Hodgkinson Province. The tabular to lenticular shape and gross conformability of the ore bodies; the common occurrence of colloform, framboidal and banded textures in the ores; the lack of significant alteration adjacent to the massive ore horizons and the apparent restriction of stockwork mineralization to the foot-wall side of the massive ore zone at the O.K. mine, all favour a syngenetic origin for the massive sulfide bodies. Furthermore, the micro- structural evidence suggests that the ores have undergone the same deformational history as the country rocks. The invariable association of the ores with spilites; the S isotope values and Co-Ni contents of the pyrites, together with the primitive metal assemblage (Fe, Cu, minor Zn) strongly favour a basic magmatic source for the sulfides. It is suggested-that the sulfides were probably precipitated sub aqueous- ly during a hiatus in volcanic activity. The O.K. deposit is of the cupreous pyrite variety, but unlike other well known occurrences of this type, it does not con- stitute part of an ophiolite complex.
