Gwalia Consolidated Ltd has been in the mining industry for about 15 years, yet its key wholly owned Greenbushes Mine has a history dating back to the last century. Similarly Gwalia Consolidated's associate, Sons of Gwalia Ltd owns the historic Sons of Gwalia and Marvel Loch Mines with Sons of Gwalia celebrating its centenary this year. This durability is a testament to the quality of the orebodies concerned and the massive technological achievements over this time which have enabled each of these mines to maintain their competitiveness. While Sons of Gwalia and Marvel Loch were and continue to be gold mines, the wholly owned Greenbushes Mine has survived and in fact prospered through the development of alternative products from its rich and unique pegmatite. Similarly, for Gwalia Consolidated to grow and prosper it will be necessary to expand the current portfolio of products and operations. The Greenbushes Mine has already given Gwalia world `No 1' status in both the supply of primary tantalite concentrates and lithium minerals (spodumene). The asset base contributed by Gwalia's gold investments assisted in the recapitalisation of the Greenbushes assets to fully develop their potential. Industrial minerals and strategic metals were of interest to Gwalia as these markets are relatively small and it is possible to develop an influential if not dominant position in the market with a quality asset. Capital expenditure to develop such projects are also usually in the order of $10 m to $20 m, a manageable range relative to Gwalia's size.

Mine closure planning integrated into life-of-mine (LOM) planning during the operational phase consists of many subcategories. One of these subcategories that needs to be fully integrated into the LOM planning is that of water management planning. Issues arise when mine water management infrastructure, which is required post-mine closure, is only considered closer to the end of LOM. Once the mine is closed monitoring is focused on water quality as an indicator of closure performance, hence inadequate upfront post-mining water management planning or integration into operations will result in environmental harm. The lack of considering post-mining water management is not uncommon in LOM planning. Poor mine site water management and planning are a wide reaching problem for the mining industry. Numerous active mines have been issued with environmental notices and penalties for contaminated water discharge; including issues with abandoned mines now being cared for by governments all over the world.Mitigating sources of water contamination caused by existing and closed mine sites that are leaching pollutants might be impractical, due to inaccessibility to the contaminants or final landform topography. The opportunity to consider and introduce post-closure required mine water management infrastructure is lost once the waste facilities are constructed. Mitigating contamination is made more problematic with mines located in remote areas, serviced by dedicated roads, water supply, electrical supply, etc. It is expected that these services will be decommissioned or drastically reduced, once closure is reached making remedial work much harder. Inadequate planning, to ensure access and easily maintainable water management infrastructure, could lead to erosion and contamination going unnoticed. There are numerous examples of poor mine water management practices in Africa, Asia, Australia, South and North America. In the United States more than 23 000 km of streams are affected by pollution sourced from some 50 000 abandoned or mature mine sites (DeGraff, 2007).CITATION:Boshoff, H J J, ?2014. In Japan, a small-diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) of diameter 2.6 m applicable to a wide range of geology from hard rock to soft strata was developed with the purpose of reducing construction costs of headrace tunnels for small hydroelectric power stations. And in 1983, a demonstration test was carried out in the No. 1 headrace tunnel work of Hayakido Hydroelectric Power Station. The principal achievements in executing work are the following: (1) Although this TBM was a demonstration test unit, excavation advances averaged more than 200 m/month and exceeded the average 150 m/month with a conventional method. (2) According to PS velocity surveys after tunnel excavation the zone of loosening due to the TBM method was small enough to be ignored and was approximately one-half compared with conventional methods in rock of the same evaluation.

The reduction in the number and duration of machinery and equipment failures is an important source of economical efficiency enhancement in the Polish coal mining industry.Non-dismantling methods have been thus developed to evaluate the technical state of machines. Among these viroacoustical methods are the most effectively employed. Two-directional organisation of the testing can be chosen, such as periodical and continuous inspection. The monitoring methods for ball bearing, rope tension uniformity, longwall shearers, main fans and shafts installations etc. Instrumentation for monitoring measurements are either of intrinsically - safe or explosion - proof construction, which enables using them in a gas-hazard atmosphere. The development of these procedures has led to the trials to insert the diagnostic methods into the organisational scheme of a coal mine.

In August 1996 a Microseismic Monitoring System developed by ISS International Limited was installed at the Pasminco Broken Hill Mine -Southern Cross area. The project aims were to:Assist in daily safety management in a mine environment which exhibits one of the highest occurrences of microseismic activity recorded in the Australian mining industry. Be used as a proactive tool in design of future development and stoping. The project to-date has been an unqualified success in achieving both goals. Consequently the system is being expanded from 6 to 14 monitoring sites.

Mining companies are not ill-informed on the topic of community health. There have been a number of research studies that have illuminated community health issues associated with mining, especially in the western Canadian province of British Columbia. However, what is missing amongst the literature is the perspective of mine managers and mining executives on this topic. This is important as mine managers and executives face a number of issues related to community health and are under pressure to consider the topic in more detail. This paper presents results from an exploratory qualitative investigation based on grounded theory research techniques into current community health considerations from the perspectives of mine executives and mine managers working in Western Canada. Interviews were conducted between February and May 2012 with 11 mining versus ten mining executives and managers who represented operating mines or mining umbrella organisations in Western Canada. Participants report on general community health issues that are perceived to be important, the perceived role that the mining sector should play?in contributing to community health and how this differs in Western Canada as compared to locations abroad, and?risks companyÆs face in making community health contributions. This paper concludes by drawing attention to pressing health needs that are present in Northern, rural and Aboriginal populations in Western Canada and provides a platform for future research initiatives focused on improving the health and well-being of communities associated with the mining industry. Iron ore sinter quality depends heavily on the mineralogy, textures and physical structure of the sinter, which is formed upon solidification of the primary sinter melt. The interactions of the initial sinter melt with its surrounding materials will impact on the properties of the primary sinter melt and consequently the solidified structure of the sinter. By using a high-temperature visualisation system, in situ studies have been conducted on the effects of melt compositions (Al2O3, SiO2 and MgO) on the interfacial phenomena of the sinter melt on a natural iron ore substrate. It was found that the melt composition significantly influenced the wettability between the sinter melt and the iron ore substrate. The interactions between the sinter melt and the natural iron ore substrate were also examined. Such interactions can lead to further changes of sinter melt composition and hence the sinter melt properties that, in turn, further affect the wetting behaviour of the sinter melt.CITATION:Ma, M P, Lu, L, Hapugoda, S and Manuel, J R, 2013. "Understanding controls on groundwater and surface water flow and quality at mine sites throughout all mine stages is critical to effectively manage environmental impacts over the entire mine life. Monitoring forms is an essential component of this proof of understanding. Typically, monitoring programs at mine sites have been developed in the framework of existing conditions. However; recognition of the challenges of climate change and the performance of mines during recent extreme events in Australia has highlighted the need to develop monitoring programs that are resilient and responsive to changing environmental conditions. Water monitoring programs need to be effective under a range of environmental conditions, potentially not historically experienced.This emerging challenge requires cross-disciplinary teams to work together to understand issues including: representativeness of background conditions to longer-term conditions at the mine site sensitivity of mine and closure designs to changing climate and hydrologic conditions methods of performance (eg water quality or quantity) failure during extreme climate events such as flood or extended drought.These understandings come together in a detailed conceptual and, in many cases, numerical hydrologic model that considers the mine-water environment under a range of conditions. The groundwater, surface water and water quality monitoring programs that are developed from the conceptual model need to be sufficiently responsive to be effective in the face of such changing conditions, with results in turn informing the conceptual model. Extended drought, major floods and changing weather patterns can alter recharge and discharge areas, oxidation profiles and ultimately, the contaminant flux estimates that would have contributed to mine design parameters and performance. Unless these effects are considered in the spatial and temporal design of the monitoring program and within the parameters monitored, the resultant program may fail to capture data that are critical to evaluating environmental impacts from mine sites.Developing and implementing a water monitoring program that considers these issues can build confidence in mine performance under a range of conditions, leading to increased confidence by all stakeholders in long-term mine performance during and after closure.CITATION:Weaver, T R, Price, A D, Patterson, O and Germs, W J, 2013. Recent drops in commodity prices and economic uncertainty have seen many businesses re-evaluate their operational expenditure to ensure mine profitability. The high capital and operational cost of truck and digger fleets has resulted in loading and hauling of material being a significant proportion of a mine’s expenses (Nel, Kizil and Knights, 2011), thus it is often one of the first areas to be considered for cost reduction. If an operation requires additional trucks to maintain or improve productivity, a robust justification is crucial due to the expenditure involved.Mining schedules form the basis of productivity and cost estimations for mining operations and therefore must have a significant level of confidence with regards to achievable quantities and rates. Traditionally, a mining schedule is produced without detailed consideration of the trucking capacity or requirements. Although some mine planning software incorporates haulage predictions into schedules, most cannot model the dynamic nature of dumping and haulage. Previous studies have shown that it is necessary to have detailed haulage analysis instead of the traditional mining block centroid to dump block centroid methods for more realistic mining schedules and cost estimation (Doig and Kizil, 2013).Recent developments in software have allowed the dynamic integration of haulage analysis with mining schedules. Engineers can now create mining schedules in conjunction with dumping schedules, allowing mining schedules to reflect the restrictions created by the number of available trucks, combined with dynamic consideration of available in-pit and out-of-pit dumping locations.A study has been completed producing a mining schedule in conjunction with a dumping schedule and haulage analysis. Multiple schedules were run with various haulage strategies (including minimising rehabilitation liability) and truck availability to identify the impacts on coal production, and hence revenue. A financial analysis was then completed where a net present value (NPV) was calculated for each scenario. The study showed that trucking shortfalls can significantly impact mining schedules and cost estimations, both in terms of cost as well as revenue lost when trucks cannot maintain forecast production rates, thus dumping schedules and haulage analysis should be completed simultaneously. If dumping and haulage is not considered when planning the mining schedule, a mining business is ignorant to the impacts trucking has on the mine production, closure risk and profitability.CITATION:Doig, P G, 2014. The application of the hydraulic fracturing technique to the measurement of in situ rock stress from underground excavation is discussed; including relevant theoretical considerations, equipmenl details, experimental technique and analysis procedures. Examples of the application of the technique at three Australian coal and metalliferous mining operations are given. The results obtained from these applications are compared with corresponding results obtained from overcoring tests conducted in close proximity at each site. Generally good correspondence in a wide variety of rock types is indicated. Experience gained with hydraulic fracturing at several underground mining sites has indicated it to be a quick, cost effective means of gaining an understanding of the in situ stress field in sufficient detail for many mine planning functions.

The procedure for operation of deluge systems installed in road tunnels is still a subject of debate. The work undertaken in this paper assists in the understanding of the effects of deluge in road tunnels, and thus aims to help inform the development of operational policy. Analysis was undertaken using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to help explore the deluge interaction with the tunnel ventilation (including smoke exhaust) and combustion products. It was found, for the scenarios considered, that: Deluge activation can decrease the required critical velocity for smoke backlayering, and this in turn can improve the effectiveness of a smoke exhaust system.The dominant parameter for deluge effectiveness is the vehicle configuration, with shielded scenarios (such as a fire in the passenger compartment) showing almost no water reaching the fire. The water delivery rate (5 mm/min versus 10 mm/min) has only a minor effect on the smoke duct damper inlet temperatures and downstream smoke temperatures for small fires (5 MW). For large fires (50 MW) the higher water delivery rate gives slightly improved performance (lower damper inlet temperatures and lower downstream smoke temperatures). A one-dimensional transient tunnel model incorporating different operational and deluge response policies (ie deluge activation times) was developed. It was used to examine the influence of different operational parameters on life safety risk and tunnel damage risk. It was found, for the scenarios considered, that: The life safety risk for different scenarios has a sensitivity to deluge activation policy with the case of delaying the deluge activation for a long time giving the worst outcomes. However, the most critical parameters for life safety risk are operator response time (for all response activities, not just deluge) and the type of fire (configuration, size and growth rate).There is a reduction in risk of tunnel damage when the deluge is activated earlier, although the fire configuration (ie whether or not the seat of the fire can be reached) has the greatest influence on the outcome. It is concluded that the deluge activation policy should be case-dependent. It will depend on the tunnel, the safety systems provided, and most particularly the vehicles involved. The current policy in Australian tunnels is for manual activation of the deluge by the tunnel operator as soon as practical after the fire is confirmed (see also PIARC, 2007). This is a good policy. However, future work may be helpful to improve the skills of operators to make the best judgement as to when deluge should be activated, balancing all risks. This work could include research to further the understanding of deluge and fire in road tunnels, training programs and consideration of historical fire events.

In the Federal Republic of Germany hard coal is mined underground only. The coal mines reach down to 1 500 m deep, recently having an average depth of 900 m. The commonly used winning system is long- wall mining with face lengths up to 250 in. The gate roads, which separate the seam into single panels, have an average length of one kilometre with a cross- section up to 20 m2. These single entries are usually supported by yielding steel arches. The installation of steel arches can hardly be mechanized. The choice of heavier support, caused by increasing depth and roadway cross-section, results in high cost for labour and material in gate roads. Furthermore, the heavy steel arch is acci- dent-prone, not only during installation but also during transportation and ship- ment. Rock bolts combined with a suitable lagging offer a way of mechanizing support work in headings. The aim is to decrease cost and to increase mine safety and pro- ductivity. Over the last ten years, 50 km of gate roads have been reinforced by a combination of rock bolts and weld mesh. Nevertheless, there are still differing opinions on the feasibility of rock bolting in gate roads. In Germany a long tradition and experience with steel arch support exists, whereas the function of an anchorage is a closed book to miners, preventing this new technique from spreading more quickly. Advantages and shortcomings of both steel arch support and rock bolting are compared. The experience with rock bolting up to now is reported. Possible improve- monts arm discussed.

The Hunter Region, with a major part of the coal resources of New South Wales and a long history of coal mining, has experienced a rapid expansion of coal resource development in recent years. While there are inevitable conflicts between mining, urban development and related infrastructure, and between mining and other resources, the application of sound planning practices, and improved co-operation and co-ordination among the various parties, helps to reduce such conflicts. The planning process involves consideration of factors such as transport- ation (including port facilities), mine subsidence, provision for surface facilities, a,iC the need for buffer 'ones. In addition, provision must be made for urban expansion, often co-existing or in close proximity to present or future coal mining development. Approval of coal mining developments takes place within the legislative framework of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, 1979 (EPA Act), the Coal Mining Act, 1973 (CM Act) and the Mining Act, 1973. Considerable effort has gone into stream- lining and co-ordinating the procedures under these Acts. The EPA Act provides for regional and local environmental plans, as well as a linked process of development control and environmental impact assessment. The CM Act provides for the grant of exploration and coal mining titles and mechanisms for the responsible management of Mining.

Production from the narrow, high grade silver-lead-zinc orebodies below 15 level commenced in mid 1985.Geological, mining research and recent mining experience determined that a mechanised drill, fire and muck cycle would be the most suitable method.Ground conditions are predicted to be worse than in other cut and fill (MICAF) areas at Isa Mine, owing to the increased depth, more variable dip of the orebodies and the increased effect of major geological structures.Mechanised ground support and tight filling techniques feature in controlling these expected adverse ground conditions.

The Fosterville Goldmine in Victoria employs bacterial oxidation (BIOX« Process) to liberate gold from its flotation concentrate. Gold occurrence is primarily as submicron particles in pyrite and arsenopyrite and has been described as being in æsolid solutionÆ and therefore not amenable to direct cyanidation even with fine grinding. Once liberated by the oxidation process, the gold is then available for cyanide leaching. While the oxidation process is very effective, it has been found that a portion of the liberated gold can become suspended in the liquid phase in what appears to be a colloidal state. This liquid becomes a waste stream during washing of the oxidised solids and the suspended gold is therefore lost. This paper discusses investigations into the causes of the loss and also describes the successful use of quebracho tannin in reducing colloidal gold loss. Laboratory and subsequent plant trials, showed a gain of 2.6 per cent in overall gold recovery based on mill feed and waste stream data.

Caval Ridge Mine (CVM) is one of the newly established open-cut coal mines of BHP in Queensland, where no tailings dam is planned to be built in order to minimise environmental impacts from mining activities. The waste streams from the Coal Handling and Processing Plant, including fine tailings dewatered by belt filter presses, coarse rejects, and mixed plant rejects, are co-disposed within waste dumps built with pre-strip and dragline spoils. Due to high rejects output (35 – 60% of feed) and low spoil to reject ratio (< 5) the large quantities of rejects bring significant geotechnical and operational challenges to CVM, which are exacerbated by increasing annual production rates and additional rejects from washing coal from an adjacent mine. Further in-house geotechnical review commenced in mid-2014 based on the initial geotechnical studies during the project stage of CVM between 2011 and 2013. The outcomes have enabled rejects disposal at CVM by constructing large belt filtered tailings cells, coarse rejects only dumps, and co-disposal of the mixed plant rejects at dump tip-heads. This paper presents the rejects disposal strategies at CVM from both technical and operational aspects. It also discusses future projects for belt filtered tailings moisture reduction including assessment of tailings clay mineralogy, as well as mixed plant reject co-disposal verification and optimisation.CITATION:Li, J, Payne, D and Hooi, H, 2018. Differences between the long-term model (LTM) and mine geology system (MGS) grade control block-outs on a blast block scale can impose difficulties to planning crusher feed grade and tonnes on a monthly to weekly blend basis. Detailed geological input to short-term planning has been integral to improve the performance and reduce risk in six-week to three-month production schedules and local variability in tonnage and grades is often not accurately represented in the LTM. The challenge of producing to combined target specifications from different mine sites in an integrated mine to ship business has been reduced with the creation of blast blockout-based short-term model. These short-term blast block models (STBBM or STM) are robust predictive tools created for upcoming benches of current mining areas by firstly collecting data from the pit in the form of bench and face mapping and projecting the structure and stratigraphy down to the next bench. A wire-frame of the projected contacts based on material destination from production blockouts is created and then checked against the LTM. Blast block data from the bench above including assay results and material logging is extracted and validated according to the projected wire-frames (geozones). Individual blast blocks and a full block model are created for each bench production defined by the STP (bench plans). Data output from the STM is in a compatible format for import into scheduling specific software packages. Additional information is incorporated into the STM to allow querying of drill penetration rates, predicted powder factors, material hardness and feed type to further aid in the production planning process and cost forecasting. To date, reconciliation of the STM has been pleasing and certainly an improvement on the LTM, especially in areas where variability is higher due to geological complexity. Short-term predictions derived from in-pit geological observations allow mine planners to more confidently decide on mining block sizes and schedule tonnages and grades, reducing the risk component attached to developing production schedules based directly upon long-term orebody models and mine plans.

Historic mining across the Bendigo goldfield reached an average mining depth of 750 m over an area of about 16 km by 4 km, with two shafts exceeding 1400 m. Mining ceased in the mid 1900s due in part to increased dewatering and ventilation demands. Water extraction technology of the day, combined with multiple mine ownership, did not allow uninterrupted and thus economic mining activity to prosper. Today Bendigo Mining Limited (BML) is targeting gold-bearing reefs beneath the water-filled historic mine workings. To ensure mining activity can proceed without the risk of water inrush, historic workings are being dewatered by submersible pumps in historic shafts and through a series of underground drain holes intersecting old workings. Due to the high heads involved, individual drain hole development requires rigorous safety control implementation and assessment prior to drilling. Water extracted via drain holes is pumped to the surface through a series of pipe lines and rising mains in conjunction with two staged pumping stations. Both stations are equipped with high-speed centrifugal pumps, each capable of pumping 40 L/s at a static head of approximately 300 m. BML, which operates beneath and within a large city, is confronted with unusual environmental and social challenges compared to many within the mining industry. The raw mine water, which contains elevated salt levels, is piped through residential areas and must comply with strict controls to prevent impacts on the surrounding environment. The final delivery point is BMLÆs water treatment plant at the north end of the city. The water treatment plant utilises chemical pretreatment and reverse osmosis. It is able to process 7 ML of mine water per day at full production. The product is approximately 5 ML of reusable irrigation quality water, which is made available to the Bendigo community for public gardens, sporting facilities and rural irrigation. The 2 ML of brine is directed to a purpose-built evaporation pond facility located 7 km north of the water treatment facility.

There is growing acknowledgement that successful organisations, including mining companies, achieve their competitive advantage by better managing their employees, customers and other stakeholders. The fact that I have been asked to address this conference is perhaps evidence of the recognition of the importance of ensuring the improved management capabilities of the personnel within Australian mining companies. As many of you will be aware, prior to my appointment to the role of President of Minera Alumbrera Limited (MAA), the operator of the Bajo de la Alumbrera project, my career had been more generally focussed on industrial relations and human resources management. My appointment was met by surprise in some quarters, as it is unusual for a person without the technical background of a mining discipline to manage a world-class mining operation. However, it was recognised early in the life of the Alumbrera project that the operation did not lack technical expertise or a committed workforce; rather what was required was innovative management of the project and its operational resources, particularly given that we were operating with totally ægreenÆ workforce in a country without a large-scale mining culture. It is my experience that a particular shortcoming of mining companies is that they have tended to ægrowÆ managers based on their technical expertise rather than people management skills. Historically, many companies have assumed, or at least hoped, that their better technical people would develop the requisite skills to take on the challenges of management. Such philosophy has not always met with success. Whilst the topic for my presentation was originally published as People in the Mining Industry, within the context of the overall theme for this plenary session, People: Education for the Future, it is a subject with an extraordinary breadth of possibilities for discussion. Therefore, I have chosen to redefine my presentation to People Management Issues in Offshore Mining Projects,an issue which I consider to be an important area within the overall topic and one which has particular currency given the increased tendency by Australian miners towards offshore exploration. It is also relevant from the perspective of continued rationalisation of our industry, the recognition that there will be more large-scale, global corporate mining entities and that significantly more mining professionals will become æcitizens of the worldÆ. We therefore need to prepare our future leaders for these challenges. The topic also allows me to highlight the importance of an holistic management approach as the establishment of a new project in a foreign environment puts into stark relief the need for the application of the full range of competencies, rather than the narrow ætechnicalÆ approach to doing business. I hasten to add, however, that the mining industry is not alone in this regard and I was interested to read an article in the Weekend Australian of 22/23 January 2000, which reported on the first key speech of former Westpac CEO, Bob Joss, as Dean of the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. He said: à We know that when our students go out into the world, if they have to struggle, it will not be because theyÆre not smart enough, or they donÆt have enough good ideas. It will be because they struggle over managing themselves and their relationships to other people. The article then went on to say that Bob Joss foreshadowed an initiative to build alliances between the Business School and other Humanities departments within Stanford University to draw on their learning. Other business schools have also recognised this need, albeit somewhat late in the day, as have the most enlightened of modern corporations; in summary, successful businesses have recognised that in an age where competitive advantage through, for example, technological breakthroughs is very short-lived, it is the quality of management that will provide the leading edge. By using the Alumbrera project as a case study, I will identify certain of the challenges with which companies and individuals may be confronted in the establishment of a greenfields project outside Australia. However, many of the issues raised will have direct application in the context of the development of an Australian operation. My objective is to provide an indication of areas which should be considered at the formative stages of a projectÆs development, with particular focus on the issues of people management. I would expect that such a study would be of benefit to companies, education institutions and individuals in preparing themselves for similar experiences.

The Express Rail Link (XRL) will provide high-speed rail services from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and a connection to the national high-speed passenger rail network serving major cities throughout Mainland, China. The HK$ 67 B (NZ$ 11.5 Billion) project is of great strategic importance for Hong Kong and is being implemented to a very tight schedule, from early 2010 with completion targeted for 2015.The works include a 15 platform terminus station in West Kowloon, 26 km of twin track tunnels from the terminus to the Hong Kong/Shenzhen boundary at Mai Po, tunnel vent shafts/adits/emergency rescue siding and a stabling siding facility. Trains on the Hong Kong section are intended to operate at speed up to 200 km per hour and up to 350 km per hour on the Mainland section.This presentation will provide an overview of the entire XRL project, with a focus on the challenging geotechnical and spatial constraints on the tunnel works.
