The importance of reducing the moisture content of fine coal, the nature of the retained water, and the means of its removal are discussed. A statistical technique, using a balanced block design, was used to isolate the significant factors determining water content of a coal filter cake. The most significant factor was particle size distribution. A simplex evolutionary operation (evop) was used to determine the optimal quantities of additives required to produce the lowest moisture content for a selected coal size. For this optimum condition (18·6 Ib H20 per lOO Ib dry coal), additions of 0·045 Ib magnesium ion, 0·0026 lb Separan AP30, and 0·098 Ib Aerosol OT, per lOO Ib dry coal were required. The work illustrated the uses of a statistical evop technique for the determination of optimal conditions in industrial research projects.

In an environment of accelerating capital costs, limited capital availability and strongly cyclic metal prices, there is a difference between a robust mining and processing operation and one that would maximise shareholder returns in an idealised world. A higher cut-off grade policy is likely to improve operating margins and may reduce the scale of operations and thus limit capital exposure. OZ Minerals Limited owns and operates the Prominent Hill Copper-Gold Mine, located 140 km southeast of Coober Pedy in far north South Australia. The Prominent Hill mine comprises an open cut mine with an initial 10 year mine-life and an 8 Mtpa conventional grinding and flotation plant to produce high quality copper-gold-silver concentrates, which are exported by road to local customers and by rail to the port of Darwin for shipment on to Southeast Asian smelters. Mine and process operations at Prominent Hill are licensed to abstract a water supply of up to 26 ML/d, sourced from a borefield located 40 km and extending to 80 km east of the mine. The arid climate of the broader Prominent Hill region means that groundwater is important for sustaining community and pastoral industries in the region, and security of water rights for third party users is a critically important water management issue posing a significant challenge to the development of Prominent Hill. Depth to water table and the typically high salinity of groundwater in the region means there is little environmental dependence on groundwater within the immediate Project area (mine lease and wellfields). The Prominent Hill mine and associated infrastructure lies within the South Australian Far North Prescribed Wells Area (FNPWA), which was principally defined to ensure the ongoing security of the ecologically, socially and culturally significant GAB springs, of which the closest are found around 150 km northeast of Prominent Hill, and only 50 km northeast of the water supply borefield. Prescribing of the FNPWA meant that OZ Minerals was required to demonstrate to both State and Federal Government agencies that the mine's water supply is independent of that which supports GAB springs and other third party water users in the region. Recognising these potential obstacles, OZ Minerals successfully defined and developed a previously unknown industrial quality groundwater resource, separate from other important groundwater resources in the region that supply community, pastoral and environmental users, ensuring third party water user sustainability.

Principal component analysis of the variation of Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Mn, and Cr in a control group of 96 samples of surface ironstone from the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia, was used to derive a simple graphical method, based on only Cu, Ni, and Cr, for discriminating between massive nickel gossans and other ironstones.When the graph was tested by plotting 400 control samples, it failed to correctly classify only nine out of 176 gossans and 11 out of 224 other ironstones.

Drill hole magnetometric resistivity (DHMMR) is a relatively recent addition to the explorationistsÆ suite of techniques for finding further resources in the vicinity of a drill hole. The method relies on gathering of an applied current into zones which are less resistive than the country rocks and it was first applied to exploration programs looking for weakly conductive sulphides, such as, for example, carbonate-hosted zinc deposits. More recently, it has been applied to a wider range of deposit styles, including highly conductive nickel sulphides. It has been found that the technique is capable of not only detecting mineralisation not seen by conventional electromagnetic (EM) techniques, but it can detect at a greater distance. Also, whilst EM is superior at defining tabular-shaped conductors, DHMMR may be more effective at finding cigar shaped sulphides. This paper presents a number of examples illustrating these findings.

The treatment plant at the Macraes Gold Project in New Zealand processes a carbonaceous, refractory sulphide gold ore. Since its commissioning in 1990, there has been a programme of continuous improvement of the plant, leading to higher recovery, increased throughput and low operating costs. During this time, a number of processes for treating both, or either, the preg-robbing carbonaceous fraction of the ore and the refractory sulfide fraction have been evaluated, trialed and utilised. The latest phase involves the installation by Minproc of plant utilising Newmont Gold's Pressure Oxidation Technology, a process which is anticipated to mitigate both problem factors when commissioned in 1999.

Telfer Gold Mine combines a world-class gold and copper resource and longevity of operation as a major gold and copper producer. Telfer Gold Mine has undergone a series of transformations since mining commenced as a high-grade narrow-vein oxide open pit operation in 1977. In 1986, the open pit operation converted from a narrow-vein, high-grade operation, to a low-grade high-volume oxide mining operation utilising dump leach processing technology. Mechanised underground mining of the high-grade narrow-veins commenced in 1990. Total recovered gold production between 1977 to 1999 has totalled 5.7 million ounces. The Telfer Extension Project consists of two pre-feasibility studies, the Surface Extension Project (SEP) and the I-Series Project (ISP). The combined studies represent one of the more significant resource evaluations undertaken in the gold industry in recent times. Geological activities for the SEP pre-feasibility study have included the drill definition of a large low-grade resource within an area of 25 km2 . The surface drilling program has completed 15 000 metres of HQ3 diamond drilling and over 30 000 metres of RC between last quarter of 1998 and late-1999. The ISP pre-feasibility study is currently evaluating the resource potential of both a high-grade low-volume and a lower grade bulk mining scenario, 800 m to 1200 m below the surface of Main Dome. 15 000 metres of underground diamond drilling have been completed between last quarter of 1998 and August 1999 as part of this study. Systems and cultures have been developed to maximise safety, monitor the quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) on all aspects of the operation, and minimise impact on the environment. All data are stored in database systems, specifically designed for Telfer operations. 3D geostatistical resource estimation using ordinary kriging has been carried out for over 220 geological domains within the 25 km3 of mineralised system. Non-linear geostatistical techniques are being investigated as part of the pre-feasibility study.

The mining industry in Australia frequently uses the services of specialist engineering and managing contractors and consultants for a majority of the work required for project development, from feasibility studies to project commissioning. The project owner's prime objectives are to achieve predictability and competitive advantage for their project. As the majority of this work will be carried out by contractors, the effective evaluation, selection and management of these contractors in the most appropriate forms of contracts is an essential ingredient to project success. The first stage to project development should be for the owner to examine its own resources to establish the role that it will fill and thereby identify the role and scope of contractors' involvement. Once the owner has developed this work plan, the selection of contractors and consultants should be structured to ensure that the owner acquires the appropriate expertise and experience to achieve its project objectives. The sequence of selection procedures is: 1. Pre-qualification of prospective contractors according to the owner's adopted criteria, through the use of a pre-qualification questionnaire. 2. Evaluation by the owner tender board according to predetermined mandatory criteria. 3. Preparation of tender documents for submission to qualified contractors. 4. Evaluation of tender submissions by the owner tender board using a pre-determined, weighted matrix of technical and commercial criteria. 5. Final selection and contract negotiation.

Gas well tests were performed on 17 wells in the Roma area. The procedure used in the test programme incorporates an initial isochronal test followed by what is described as the "two flow drawdown" technique. The second flow of the two flow drawdown test was conducted for sufficient time to allow transient investigation of the surrounding reservoir. This combination of tests allows the evaluation of stabilized production capacity in addition to the determination ,of several important reservoir characteristics.It also provides a qualitative indication of reserves, by reflecting the presence or absence of reservoir boundaries within the drainage area affected during the test.

A review is made of the limited published experience of the effects of cemented fill in flotation.A general approach is adopted in listing and discussing possible sources of, and reasons for, ore contamination by cemented fill, together with basic, fundamental approaches to minimizing this contamination. These approaches involve basic mining design, effect of fill placement density, optimization of curing time and of cement content, variation of fill particle grading, use of flocculants and of pozzolans, fill placement and dewatering, and or blasting and handling practice.

Open cut mining of the Black Rock chalcocite ore started in 1963. A ground movement monitoring programme was commencing in the early stages of mining when signs of instabilityof the western wall became apparent. Eventually 100.000 cu vd, of overburden Were removed beyond the rim of the western wall in an attempt to stabilize the slope. Subsequent decpenlug and mining till the final batter angle of 45 resulted in deterioration and mining was stopped 38 ft short in the ulltimte design deplh of 520 ft.Investigations showed that the geology of the western wall , was a major factor in the instability of this wall. A block jointed model was made 10 illustrate some of the pehomena observed. Experience is reporled in the operation of the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell, afler it had been reconstructed to obtain better control of the heating of the briquettes in order to produce a strong char suitable for use as a metallurgical fuel. The theoretical Ideal Heating Cycle, which had been designed from earlier laboratory research, was closely approached in the carbonizer, and up to 97 per cent of the whole dried briquettes entering the carbonizer were recovered unbroken in the char.The strength of the char produced in the pilot plant was limited by the performance of the drier where the cracking and breakage of the briquettes was more severe. Theoretical studies have indicated that this limitation could be removed by using a hot briquette feed to the pilot plant. Experience indicates that with a hot briquette feed to the drier and with ideal heating in the carbonizer, hard char could be produced from Yallourn briquettes in continuous operation.The project has been terminated for economic reasons...

The mechanization of the coal industry in New South Wales involved the introduction of large face and transport machines. The trend is towards still higher capacity units with .greater horsepower and it became apparent that a potential risk of damage to the hearing of workmen existed. In order to assess whether the sound levels were SUfficiently high to impair the hearing of workmen a sound level survey of all major operations in the industry was carried out by the Mining Engineering Division of the Joint Coal Board.The results indicated ·that the operations could be classified into three categories of risk, probably hazardous, of doubtful hazard due to the intermittency of the operations, and of low hazard.Legislation has subsequently been enacted requiring the wearing of hearing preservation aids in some of the probable risk operations.

The use of black and white and colour infrared film in remote sensing of natural resources is reviewed. In heavlly-forested areas such as New Zealand, the main value of the method is in surveying the vegetation cover to detect the existence of plant communities characteristic of specific geological formations. By contrast in arid areas of Australia where the vegetation cover is sparse and where rocks and soils are well exposed, the method can be used in detecting different rock types or other geological differences.

Highwall stability is a major consideration in optimising opencast mine geometry. It involves assessing the risk of those slope failures that are large enough to have significant cost, safety and/or operational implications. These risks are then balanced against the value of the resource to arrive at an acceptable slope design. Load-deformation models (commonly referred to as ænumericalÆ models) of slopes provide a powerful tool in this decision-making process since they can be verified well before slope failure occurs. This gives the slope designer increased confidence in reviewing designs during excavation, potentially allowing early revision of pit geometry to either increase or decrease safety margins as appropriate. However, these models are not always adopted as they depend heavily on an appropriate choice of constitutive model and material parameters.   A preliminary load-deformation model of a 170m highwall in Solid Energy North (SEN) OperationsÆ Awaroa 4 opencast coal mine in the Rotowaro Coalfield has been prepared. This uses a strain-dependent constitutive model based on laboratory test results, strength parameters developed by SEN and excavation monitoring data. The laboratory testing has included triaxial compression tests on large-diameter fractured samples to characterise the stress-strain response of the closely-jointed soft rock masses that exist in many parts of the mine. Data from the monitoring of a 25m cut made during excavation of a haul road has been used to refine and verify the constitutive model. The resulting highwall model has predicted highwall crest movements corresponding to the excavation of each bench, for comparison with monitored values. Key model outputs are total horizontal movements of about 0.5m near the highwall crest and shear strains of 0.5-0.7% at the locations of potential bedding-parallel shear planes underlying the highwall. Most of the movement is expected to occur as creep rather than as an immediate response to excavation.

More than 11 Moz of Au and 50 Moz of Ag have been produced from epithermal deposits in New Zealand, almost entirely from 50 deposits in the Hauraki goldfield. Since the 1980s, new deposits have been discovered at Waihi (Favona, Trio, Correnso) and nearby at Golden Cross. Feasibility studies into reopening the Talisman mine at Karangahake are continuing, and advanced projects with preliminary inferred resource estimates are reported at Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Muirs. In the Taupo Volcanic Zone, 11 prospects have been drilled, resulting in the definition of large but low-grade Au-Ag resources at Ohakuri. In Northland, several Au, Ag and/or Hg prospects are known, and small quantities of Ag and Hg have been mined. Six prospects have had some drilling, with the most advanced exploration at Puhipuhi. The application of Taupo Volcanic Zone geothermal systems research to the modelling of former hydrothermal mineralising processes in some epithermal prospects has enabled better targeting of exploration.CITATION:Christie, A B and Barker, R G, 2015. The New Zealand Steel Ironsand Slurry Pipeline was successfully commissioned in February 1986. The project includes 18 km of high pressure, polyurethane lined buried pipe. McConnell Dowell Constructors Limited has developed a coupling which has allowed this pipeline to be fully welded. The design and development of the coupling and its application on this project is discussed.

Current spontaneous combustion index parameters such as SHT, CPT/RIT and R70 self-heating rate all have deficiencies that need clarifying from a risk management perspective. In some instances they can produce a false negative evaluation and in others they can produce a false positive evaluation. These tests all use a relative rating scheme that does not provide any indication of the time it takes for a spontaneous combustion event to develop, nor do they consider the moderating influence of moisture present in the coal on self-heating rate in the low temperature oxidation region. This is viewed as a major deficiency since the true self-heating behaviour of broken coal is primarily a function of time that is governed by the interaction of the initial boundary conditions (initial ambient temperature and moisture state) with the reactivity of the coal (both intrinsic coal reactivity and accelerated self-heating from reactive pyrite if present). The current index tests are also not appropriate for assessment of coalmine immediate roof and floor rocks.CITATION:Beamish, B B and Theiler, J, 2017. The oxidation of iron and nickel sulphide concentrates, and the dominant sulphide minerals which comprise them, has been studied under ignition conditions using thermogravimetry (fG). The concentrates were derived from various minesites and they showed differing tendencies to ignite. Ignition temperatures ranged from 416 to 488°C and the extents of reaction, measured at 500°C, varied from 64 to 88 percent. The reactivity of the least reactivematerial was improved significantly by grinding. Particles <63/lm showed 85 percent oxidation compared with 55 - 65 percent for particles >63/lm.Examination of the individual sulphide minerals revealed that these materials also have significantly different degrees ofreactivity and are subject to particle size effects. For particles <45/lm, the ignition temperatures were as follows:ò pyrite and violarite 380 - 385°C; pentlandite 425 - 430°C; and pyrrhotite 470 - 475°;ò for particles >90 /lm, the ignition values were: pyrite 395 - 400°C;ò violarite 430 - 435°C; pyrrhotite 540 - 545°C; and pentlandite 560 - 565°C.Using the data on the individual minerals it was possible to rationalise the differing degrees of reactivity of the concentrates. The role of the most reactive constituent in initiating the ignition reaction has also been discussed.Finally, the results of this work were found to compare. favourably with the behaviour ofthe concentrates in industrial and pilot-scale flash smelters.

Online analysis of metal content can be used to optimise the grade and recovery of a flotation circuit. Compared to conventional laboratory analyses, the benefit of an online analyser is the speed of the measurement, therefore disturbances (eg changes in feed grade and decrease in recovery) can be reacted to in real time by an operator or automatic process control system. In some cases traditional X-ray fluorescence analysers can be applied to silica analysis in iron ore when the SiO2 grades are high enough and have a negative correlation with iron; however, generally a laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyser is more suitable for low Z elements.The Outotec Courier 8® analyser is a LIBS based analyser able to measure elements starting from lithium (Z = 3), thus being able to measure impurities; eg silica and aluminium directly in iron ore slurries. Besides online elemental analysis, the analyser can be combined with optical measurements for rapid continuous measurement of each sample line.
