One of the most complicated and potentially one of the most promising secondary recovery methods is that of underground combustion. A number of field tests1,2,3 have been performed recently, apparently indicating that the underground combustion process is technically feasible. Relatively little has been published concerning laboratory or theoretical investigations of the underground combustion process. A few results of laboratory tube runs have been published4,5 and these data are valuable in understanding the process. The tube run data also emphasize the complexity of the thermal recovery process. Under various conditions, problems in heat transfer, multiphase fluid flow and combustion rates arise. For example, at low temperatures the combustion process proceeds so slowly that the front cannot be propagated. It is a problem in heat transfer to predict what injection rate of air is necessary to sustain combustion in a particular reservoir. Certain fluid flow aspects of underground combustion have been studied by Wilson, et a13. In the development of some of the flow equations, assumptions of adiabatic combustion were made. Vogel and Krueger1 have devised an analog model of the heat conduction process for a constant temperature cylindrical source moving radially outward in a homogeneous conducting medium. Jenkins and Ramey7, in a discussion of the Vogel and Krueger paper, present an analytical solution of a heat conduction problem related to problems considered by Vogel and Krueger. In the present paper an idealized model of the heat conduction problem is considered, which is more general than the model of Vogel and Krueger or Jenkins and Ramey. In particular, initial well heating, vertical heat losses and arbitrary frontal velocities are included. Equations for the temperature are obtained in terms of integrals. These integrals have been evaluated numerically for the case of frontal movement corresponding to a constant air injection rate and the case of constant frontal velocity. These results are presented graphically. From these graphs one may estimate conditions under which nearly adiabatic temperatures are obtained. The application of these results requires some knowledge of reservoir thermal properties, combustion rates and residual fuel content. Assuming no vertical losses it is possible to obtain explicit evaluations of these integrals in the linear con- stant velocity case and in the radial case corresponding to a constant air injection rate. PRESENTATION OF RESULTS The geometry of the radial system is illustrated in Fig. 1 where the reservoir is represented as a slab of thickness h. By making an energy balance for an infinitesimal volume, one obtains the following equation. T= x T+F(z.r).........(1) where F (z,r) =HWv1/pc (r-r1), if z h/2 = 0, if z >h/2 . In Eq. 1, V- represents the Laplacian operator and 8 is the Dirac delta function. Eq. 1 is the well-known diff-sion equation with a source term and may be applied to a linear system. For example, if the source is moving in the direction of the x axis, then the argument of the delta function is x - 1,. In deriving Eq. 1 the following approximations were made concerning the actual combustion process: (1) all heat transfer is by conduction in a homogeneous medium, (2) the formations bounding the reservoir have the same thermal properties as the reservoir, (3) the combustion fuel is consumed instantaneously as the front arrives, (4) there is a constant fuel concentration

The value of industrial rocks and minerals produced in New Mexico in 1978 exceeded $227 million. The state ranked first in the nation in production of potash and perlite and was a leader in pumice production. Other commodities with sizable production in New Mexico include barite, caliche, clay, dimension stone, fuorspar, gypsum, humate, limestone, mica, salt, sand and gravel, scoria, and silica sand. Non-metallic resources are distributed throughout the state, but development and exploitation is concentrated in western and southeastern New Mexico. The value of industrial rocks and minerals within the state grew about 9% to more than $227 million in 1978. Continued growth, however, depends on continued demand, exploration, and development.

A RECONNAISSANCE Of the manganese-and chrome-ore deposits of Cuba was made by the writer, as a representative of the U. S. Geological Survey, in company with Mr. Albert Burch of the Bureau of Mines under instructions of the Secretary of the. Interior, in the Spring of 1918. The object of the study was to obtain authentic information for the use of the United States Government as to the location, character, quantity, and availability of the manganese and chrome-ore deposits in Cuba. Accordingly, the work comprised the examination of such deposits as seemed to be of promise, without regard to stage of development, with a view to determination of the quantity and quality of ore likely to become available for shipment during 1918 and 1919, and of the tonnage of ore in reserve. While it was possible to visit most of the deposits that seemed to be of promise, there was not sufficient time to visit all that were brought to our attention, some of which may have merit. Manganese ore is found in Cuba in Oriente, Santa Clara, and Pinar del Rio Provinces, but in Oriente Province only does it occur in large commercial quantities. There, the deposits are in three areas: one north of Santiago de Cuba, one south of Bayamo and Baire, and one on the Caribbean coast between Torquino Peak and Portillo. In Santa Clara Province, a little ore has been found near the Caribbean coast west of Trinidad; and in Pinar del Rio Province, manganiferous material occurs north of the city of Pinar del Rio and farther west near Mendoza. The manganese ores of Cuba occur, principally, in sedimentary rocks, such as limestone, sandstone, and shale, that are in places metamorphosed, and. in beds that originally may have been water-laid tuff

Anthracite coals have been divided into three groups: (I) meta-anthracite, a high-carbon coal that is usually very slow to kindle and difficult to burn, at least on conventional equipment; (2) anthracite, a high-carbon low-volatile coal of widely accepted value as both a domestic and industrial fuel; and (3) semianthracite, a coal lying between anthracite and bituminous coal in carbon and volatile content, and also, generally speaking, in burning characteristics. Anthracite Groupings The technical differentiation between these groups, as defined by the A.S.A.-A.S.T.M. Sectional Committee on the Classification of Coals, is as shown in Table I. Tables 2 and 3 show typical analyses of anthracites and semianthracites and Figs. I to 3 show graphically the range of analytical samples. Table 4 shows the commercial sizes of coals. Meta-anthracite and Graphitic Anthracite Typical analyses from virtually every field in the United States indicate that there are few if any extensive deposits of meta-anthracite. Some of the anthracites of Rhode Island contain almost negligible quantities of volatile and would thus fall into the meta-anthracite grouping on a basis of analyses alone. However, their other characteristics indicate that it is doubtful whether they should be considered as fuels at all, but rather as graphite. In fact, this material is being mined for use as foundry facings and furnace linings.4 A typical analysis of Fenners Lodge graphite,4 from Rhode Island, is: graphitic carbon, 55.9 per cent; silica (ash), 40.6; sulphur, 1.6; moisture, 1.9; volatile, o. Other Rhode Island coals possess percentages of volatile that would throw them into the normal anthracite rather than the meta-anthracite class. However, this "volatile" is nearly all noncombustible,3,4 being composed almost entirely of carbon dioxide and inert gases, therefore its definition as volatile is open to discussion, leaving the exact classification of the fuel a moot question. Effective bismuth removal from flue dust residues has been accomplished for flue dusts from both zinc and copper smelters. Selective dissolution of bismuth, with respect to silver and lead, can be achieved by the proper manipulation of temperature, sulfuric acid addition and sodium chloride addition. Optimum levels of these variables were determined using a response surface technique to maximize the objective function: Y = %Bi/(1 + %Ag). In the case of the flue dust residue from a zinc smelter, which contains bismuth as an impurity (0.05%), 86% bismuth removal can be realized with less than 1% combined silver and lead dissolution. Similarly, in the case of flue dust from a copper smelter, which contains bismuth as a primary constituent (3.3%), 93% bismuth removal was obtained with little dissolution of silver and lead values.

Discussion of the paper of BOYD DUDLEY, JR., presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 96, December, 1914, pp. 2767 to 2782. H. 0. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass.-At the close of the paper Mr. Dudley said that his experiments in the laboratory had shown that it was possible to separate nickel from copper by means of a chloridizing roasting, but that in order to demonstrate a process of this kind, work upon a large scale would have to be carried out. I think it was in 1913, that experiments of this kind were carried out at the works of the Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Co., Philadelphia, in a Wedge furnace, and at Sault Ste. Marie in a Sjöstedt furnace. They showed a satisfactory separation of nickel and copper. The ore was first subjected to an oxidizing roast, then mixed with pyrite and salt, and given a chloridizing roast. A. H. Carpenter published in the Engineering and Mining Journal, vol. xcvii, p. 1085 (1914) the details of this work. The conclusion arrived at is, that if you subject sulphide ore to an oxidizing roast, finishing at the temperature at which all nickel sulphate is dissociated, i.e., 764° C., then mix it with pyrite and salt, and subject the mixture to a chloridizing roast between 600° and 700° C., you can chloridize a high percentage of the copper without chloridizing any of the nickel, and obtain thereby a satisfactory means of separating the two.

DAVID COLE, EL PASO, TEXAS (communication to the Secretary*).-I have read with great interest Dr. Gahl's painstaking paper giving us the details of development of flotation at Inspiration, and it seems to me that he has covered the ground so completely that there is little to discuss or criticize in connection with his subject. While it was in operation, the test mill in which the campaign was carried on was the Mecca of mill men and metallurgists. There was much to interest students of milling methods in addition to the flotation experiments, and readers of Dr. Gahl's paper will miss the information they hoped to get when the "pilot" mill results were. finally compiled, and I hope that the following remarks outlining from a distance some of the things that happened there will bring forth the rest of the story of the performances recorded in these important experiments. Prior to the use of flotation methods in concentration it had long been recognized that the "unavoidable" losses of sulphides were in the slime which is inevitably produced in the grinding operations required to free the minerals to be separated. Classifying the feed prior to its final stage of treatment had long been in style in milling. This assisted the sand-handling machines and resulted in lowering the tailings made by them, but at the expense of the slime-handling department; and while little was expected of the latter, the wisdom of complicating the process by hydraulic classification was being seriously questioned. Gem materials, comprising those minerals and closely allied natural substances used for personal adornment, for the fashioning of ornamental objects, or for other decorative purposes, have been valued in human commerce for thousands of years. Amber, jet, natural glasses, and at least 15 mineral species were sought and used by primitive man, and most of the materials in common use today were known well before the time of Christ. Their variety is remarkably great, and the traceable relationships among their respective sources, modes of occurrence, properties, and histories of production, preparation, and valuation are extremely complex. Their uses have been affected by numerous shifts in fashion, and from time to time by superstition, by decrees of church and state, by personal interpretations of religious significance, and by various presumptions concerning medicinal value and influence on human behavior (Ball, 1935, 1950; Kunz, 1913; Pogue, 1915, Whitlock, 1946). Thanks to their durability, portability, and relative scarcity, some gem stones have been employed as media of exchange, and the investment value of the more precious stones has long been recognized and exploited, especially in Asiatic and European countries. Demands for gem materials have stimulated trade among various peoples for centuries, and they also were responsible for much early geographic exploration. During more recent times they have prompted numerous geological studies and a considerable amount of research on the growth and properties of crystals. Apart from decorative uses, some naturally occurring gem materials also are employed directly in numerous fields of industry. Substances that are manufactured for gem or industrial uses are termed synthetic gem materials; most of these correspond in composition and crystal structure to certain minerals found in nature. Imitation materials are those whose use is based upon their resemblance to substances of different composition and greater intrinsic value. Gem stone is a designation commonly restricted to those materials suitable for personal adornment, and the complementary term ornamental stone is applied to the remaining materials not used industrially. This distinction is arbitrary and somewhat inconsistent, owing to numerous geographic differences and historical shifts in end uses. Further, there is a complete gradation between the category of ornamental stones and that of dimension stone. Substances that lose their identity in use are excluded from the gem category; thus a transparent crystal of beryl would not be classified as a gem stone if it were processed as a source of beryllium metal. The adjectives precious and semiprecious have been employed as a means for distinguishing different gem materials on the basis of recognized value. Diamond, emerald, ruby, and sapphire consistently have been regarded as precious stones, and in cut form they commonly are referred to as the noble gems. Opal, pearl, turquoise, and chrysoberyl also have been classed as precious at various times. In recent years, however, it has been increasingly recognized that no satisfactory distinction can be based upon assessed value or any group of specific properties, and now all gem stones normally are referred to as precious. Indeed, the tendency is to extend this term to include many of the so-called ornamental stones, and the designation semi- precious has been essentially discontinued. Unlike most mineral commodities of economic value, gem materials are little altered in processing for end uses. Some stones are used in essentially their natural form, and most are reshaped and polished without significant changes in their fundamental properties. In a series of papers published recently,' R. F. Mehl and associates have studied the characteristics of form and orientation of many segregate structures and have found diversified conditions which can be explained only by postulating some specific kind of cooperative mechanism permitting the matrix lattice in some favorable region to transform into the segregate lattice in an adaptable region presenting a geometrically similar arrangement of atoms. We have collected the published data on crystallographic relationships of this sort, chiefly derived from Mehl's work, in Table 1. It is evident at once that the crystal structure of the matrix does not uniquely determine the location of the plate structures or other forms assumed by the segregate. Thus, the first seven items in the table represent precipitation of platelike forms from a matrix of face-centered cubic structure, but these plates are found stratified along planes of form {1111, {loo), {110) or another unidentified form, depending upon specific conditions involving the nature and concentration of the segregating substance. Again, in a matrix of body-centered cubic structure, plates, needles or stars have been found and the favored inner surface of segregation may be a plane of form (110), (112), {210), or indeed a surface without crystallographic indices defining a bundle of close-packed lattice lines (strings of atoms) taken more or less at random. Such a surface might be formed ideally by revolving one of these parallel strings of atoms around another as an axis. J., and whether there are. any traces of zinc in these Brazilian-deposits. J. T. SINGEWALD, JR.-We did not think of them at all as analogous to the Franklin Furnace deposits and there is no appreciable percentage of zinc present. A LL over our great country I have been privileged to see, during the last six weeks, the manifestation of a new spirit among engineers. Partly under the inspiration of leaders whose influence has been felt not only nationally, but internationally, - partly through the recognition of the service that engineers have been able to render to the nation during the recent crisis, a new self-consciousness has been acquired by the individuals, and now this self-consciousness seeks expression in opportunities for service and participation in public affairs. The engineer . no longer sees himself a mere reservoir of information to be tapped when some one is in need of cold facts, no. more an administrator of mere material things, but a potential administrator of- public affairs, a citizen and a human being, with the responsibilities, as well as the privileges of citizenship.

In the upgrading of finely disseminated iron ores, selective desliming is the critical step that must be controlled to achieve efficient flotation. A prerequisite for selective desliming is a properly-dispersed pulp; sodium silicate is commonly used as a dispersant. The mechanism by which sodium silicate acts as a dispersant in the presence of calcium ions was examined by streaming potential measurements, settling tests, abstraction density determinations, selective flocculation tests, and scanning electron microscope observations. The study established that calcium silicate precipitates on the mineral surfaces dispersed the pulp. Although sodium silicate was a nonselective dispersant, the addition of corn starch aided flocculation of goethite over quartz at low silicate additions, but became ineffective at higher silicate levels. A model is presented to explain the dispersant mechanism of sodium silicate in the presence of calcium ion for selective flocculation of iron ores.

RECENT attempts to produce secondary recrystalli-zation in high-purity iron have given conflicting results. Coulomb and Lacombe1'2 did not find it but Dunn and Walter3,4 did. The latter workers have stated that (100) [001] and/or (110) [001] orientations develop depending on the oxygen content of the annealing atmosphere. This Technical Note records results which are in agreement with Dunn and Walter in so far as it shows that secondary recrystallization can be produced in high-purity iron, but does not confirm that both types of orientation are obtainable. Similar observations have been made on chromium-iron and molybdenum-iron, although when this technique is used on 3 1/4 pct Si-Fe, both types are obtained as in the work of Dunn and alter.' Pure iron strip was cold-rolled from sintered compacts prepared from Carbonyl Iron Powder-Grade MCP of the International Nickel Co. (Mond) Ltd. The powder contains about 0.5 pct 0, 0.01 pct C, 0.004 pct N, (0.002 pct S, $0.005 pct Mg and Si, and 0.4 pct Ni—that is, it is substantially free from metallic impurities other than nickel, which is thought to be unimportant in the present work. The iron powder was (a) pressed at 25 tons per sq in. into blocks measuring 3 by 1 by 0.3 in., (b) deoxidized in hydrogen (dewpoint -60°C) by heating first at 350°C and then at 600° C until the dewpoint returned to -60°C at each temperature and (c) sintered in hydrogen (dewpoint -40°C) at 1350°C for 24 hr. (when dewpoint is referred to in this Note, it is the value as measured on the exit side of the furnace). The sintered compacts were cold-rolled to 1/8 in., annealed in hydrogen (dewpoint -60°C) at 1050°C for 12 hr and cold-rolled to 0.004, 0.002, and 0.001 in. with inter-anneals at 900°C for 5 hr and a final reduction of 50 pct. Final annealing of strip between alumina or silica plates at 875" to 900°C in hydrogen with dewpoints of -20°, -55" and -80°C produced secondary grains with the (100) in the rolling plane; the extent of secondary recrystallization was greatest when the dewpoint was -55°C. Annealing in a vacuum of 2 x 10"5 mm Hg at the same temperature produced no secondary recrystallization at all. With strip thicker than 0.002 in. very few secondary crystals developed whatever the conditions of annealing. Using a processing schedule somewhat similar to that described above, secondary recrystallization was produced in two bcc alloys of iron, viz. 80 pct Fe + 20 pct Cr and 96 pct Fe + 4 pct Mo. The former was reduced to final thicknesses of 0.001 to 0.004 in. and the latter to final thicknesses of 0.001 to 0.016 in. With the chromium-iron, a final anneal at 1250°C (found to be the most effective temperature for developing secondary crystals in the 0.004-in material) with a dewpoint of -25°C produced a greater degree of secondary recrystallization than with dewpoints of -50°C or -20°C. Secondary crystals developed in strips of all thicknesses from 0.001 to 0.004 in. Final annealing in vacuum produced no secondary crystals at all. For the molybdenum-iron a temperature of 1200°C was most effective. It was found that a dewpoint of -50°C during the final anneal gave better results than a dewpoint of -25 "C on the 0.008 in. material. Final annealing in vacuum gave slightly worse results than annealing in hydrogen with a dew-point of -50°C. Secondary crystals were developed in strips of all thicknesses up to 0.008 in. The experiments show that the extent of secondary recrystallization is a maximum for certain critical values of oxygen content of furnace atmosphere and annealing temperature, and that these values are different for different alloys. The thinner the material, the less critical these values are. The general conclusions are that secondary recrystallization can be obtained in high-purity iron, chromium-iron, and molybdenum-iron, using a processing schedule similar to that which will cause the phenomenon to take place in high purity 3 1/4 pct Si-Fe. Unlike the silicon-iron, however, only the (100) (0011-- orientation has been produced in these alloys, irrespective of the temperature of final annealing and the oxygen content of the furnace atmosphere. THIS is a preliminary report on a detailed metal- lographic investigation of the bainite reaction in a plain carbon hypoeutectoid steel. In view of the current interest in the bainite reaction and of the controversies which still exist about even the basic phenomenology of this mode of transformation, it was considered desirable to present a summary of the more important results obtained to date prior to the completion of this investigation. The steel used contained 0.29 pct C, 0.76 pct Mn, 0.25 pct Si, 0.005 pct P, and 0.007 pct S. The alloy was homogenized for 48 hr at 1250°C. Individual specimens were then austenitized for 30 min at 1300°C and isothermally transformed for various times at temperatures above and within the bainite region, ranging from 775" through 500°C at intervals of 25°C. These specimens were carefully examined on a research metallograph; a few specimens of especial interest were also studied electron microscopically.' Bainite may be defined as the aggregate structure resulting from the precipitation of carbides from supersaturated ferrite which formed by nucleation and diffusion-limited growth. Two groups of experimental observations made during the present study provide support for this mechanism of the bainite reaction: 1—at 625°C, partial conversion of pro-eutectoid ferrite to bainite began after more than 99 pct of the austenite had decomposed and 2—the precipitation of bainitic carbides occurred only within the ferrite phase. The proeutectoid ferrite and the bainite reactions in the steel studied were found to be morphologically continuous. Following the classification scheme of Mehl and Dube,2 three principal morphologies of proeutectoid ferrite were identified in the temperature region (625" to 550°C) in which the two reactions blend—grain boundary allotriomorphs," * Grain boundary allotriomorphs are crystals which nucleate at and grow preferentially along matrix grain boundaries. Widmanstaetten side plates, and intragranular plates. Carbide precipitation converted these morphologies into their bainitic equivalents with increasing isothermal reaction time. Conversion took place more rapidly as the reaction temperature was reduced. The replacement of supersaturated ferrite by bainite, however, did not occur uniformly even within individual austenite grains and was noticeably incomplete at higher transformation temperatures, e.g., 625° to 575°C. The ferritic and bainitic forms of a given morphology thus were frequently found to coexist, often inextricably intermixed, in a given specimen. At 625" and 600°C, the conversion of ferrite to bainite was clearly seen to have occurred entirely by the nucleation of carbides at ferrite/ferrite boundaries, as shown in Fig. 1. The nature of the loci at which carbides formed at lower temperatures was often difficult to ascertain with a light microscope, although the alignment in rows of many of the carbides, illustrated in Fig. 2, suggested that nucleation had again occurred at grain boundaries or subboundaries within the ferrite. Application of the electron microscope confirmed this deduction for bainitic structures formed at these temperatures, as shown in Fig. 3. The dense black appearance of bainite formed at very low reaction temperatures in higher carbon steels3 indicates, however, that isolated lattice defects within ferrite crystals prob-

Zinc oxide, an n-type semiconductor, and nickel oxide, a p-type semiconductor, were studied in electrostatic separation experiments in pure and doped forms. In addition, pure potassium chloride and potassium chloride containing one volume per cent silver were also investigated. It was found, in agreement with theory, that the presence of dopants in the oxides could either increase or decrease the electrical conductivity of the base compounds and, thus, control the response of these particles to electrostatic separation. Further, it was shown that the same dopant in the n- and p-type semiconductors produced opposite conductivity effects; again in accord with theory. Finally, it was found that the presence of dispersed silver particles in the normally insulator phase potassium chloride produced sufficient electronic conductivity to cause the silver containing particles to respond as would materials possessing "medium-type" conductivities.

RECENT jig practice has shown such marked departures from the pronouncements of the textbooks, particularly as to particle size recovered and size range of feed, as to make it desirable to reexamine the mechanism of jig action. This paper presents the results of such a study. The general conclusions of the paper are: I. A jig bed is a bi-functioned as well as bi-parted body. The upper layer comprises a plastic stream moving slowly in a substantially horizontal direction from feed lip to tail board. It serves to rough out tailing and light middling and to pick up heavy middling and lift it out of the jig box. The lower layer acts as the ultimate separating means by absorbing concentrate and rejecting heavy middling. 2. The separating function of the lower layer is performed in three definitely different ways, depending upon the relative sizes of the grains presented to it and those composing it. EXPERIMENTAL The experimental work consisted of close and long-continued visual observations of operating beds in a plunger jig, eccentric driven, and in determinations of the settling rates of various metal spheres through a quartz bed under various conditions of operation. Falling velocities were measured by an ingenious method devised by A. C. Dorenfeld, a student in the Mining Department at Columbia. Spheres of different metallic alloys, Y8-in. diameter, were cast with a short piece of fine copper wire frozen in to serve for suspension. A short piece of black cotton thread was looped to the top of the wire to serve as an indicator. The set-up for a test is shown in Fig. I. The thread should be boiled, if necessary, to make it freely water absorbent. The piece of clean plate glass D is supported rigidly at the proper height in a vertical position. The white scale E is similarly supported behind the glass. At the beginning of a test, D is filmed with water by holding it (best with clean rubber finger cots) under running tap water. It is then clamped in approximate position and C, already wet, is laid across it and drawn straight and vertical with the upper end at or near the top of D, and the ball A slightly above the top of the expanded bed. The water film holds the string to the glass. For a test the string is released, its upper end position noted just after the top of the ball becomes submerged, when the corresponding time is read, and thereafter simultaneous readings of position and time are taken as desired. Results of the visual studies of the bed are given at the pertinent places in the following discussion. Results of the settling tests are summarized in Figs. 2 and 3. DEFINITIONS The name bed as used herein refers to the entire mixture of solids and water filling the jig box. A layer is a stratum of a bed composed of particles of substantially the same specific gravities. A granular product is long-range when it approximates a crushed or ground product limited as to upper size only; a shorlrange product is one closely sized.
