MATTESON, Houston, Tex.-I think that Mr. Powers has given us some very valuable information on the Healdton field, which is of material interest in view of the fact that the Healdton field has passed Cushing in the point of production, and if not leading, stands second only to the new El Dorado field in the point of production of the oil-in this country. Mr. Powers says that the deepest producing sand at Healdton is 1860 ft. Within the last 3 or. 4 months they have drilled to 2700 ft. there and found a sand which is producing very high-grade oil, if I remember correctly, about 42 gravity. Another very important point brought out by Mr. Powers is the fact that the Pennsylvanian beds and the Permian beds are conformable according to his interpretation. He seems to have based his interpretation upon the gathering of a number of well logs and a very careful study of them, but it seems to me the information furnished by the, well logs is really insufficient to justify such an important conclusion. In the first place, the difficulty of interpreting the line of demarcation between the Permian "Red Beds" of Oklahoma and the top of the Pennsylvanian is apparent, for the reason that sometimes the uppermost Pennsylvanian formation has a reddish phase and the line of demarcation is not very sharp.

The effectiveness of coal mine face ventilation and the ability of airflow to maintain satisfactory methane and respirable dust levels in the working face area has been studied through the use of scale modeling techniques and underground testing procedures. In particular, consideration has been given to examination of the effects of operation of a high airflow, machine mounted dust scrubber unit on face air patterns. Results obtained through a cooperative study with the Peabody Coal Co. demonstrate that new mining cycles can be considered that increase production efficiency while maintaining satisfactory ventilation conditions.

Cold rolling by 50 pct a A1-4 pct Cu alloy containing many 0' plates has been found to accelerate markedly the transformation of 8' to 0 upon further aging. Although the basic mechanism of this transformation remains unchanged by plastic deformation, the nuclea-tion kinetics of 8 become appreciably more rapid and also less dependent upon temperature. Particularly at lower aging temperatures, rounded idiomorphs replace several faceted rnorphologfes. The rates of growth of 9 idiomorphs in deformed specimens aged at 300°C are appreciably more rapid than simple volume diffusion control allows. This observation is shown to be explained by an excess vacancy, rather than by a dislocation Piping mechanism of growth. ThE rather complex phenomenology of the 8' —8 transformation in Al-Cu alloys has been recently elucidated in considerable detail by means of transmission electron microscopy.'-4 This technique was also employed in the present investigation in order to examine the effects of plastic deformation upon the transformation of 8' to 8. The mechanism of the transformation in undeformed Al-Cu alloys has been established as the following sequence of events.1"4 The first step is the nucleation of 9 at (Y:8' boundaries. Nucleation of a 0 crystal takes place, however, at only a very small proportion of the 8' plates present. Each 0 crystal simultaneously consumes the host 8' plate and the a! in the immediate vicinity, with growth into a being the rate-controlling process. The remaining 8' plates are then dissolved as they fall under the concentration shadow of the growing 8 crystals. The evidence on the effects of plastic deformation upon these processes is intriguing, but much less detailed. The careful X-ray studies of Graf and Guinier have shown that the aging times required to form detectable amounts of 8' and 8 are reduced by prior cold working. Thomas and Nutting confirmed these results by replication electron microscopy. Nile-shwar,* on the other hand, reported that creep deformation decreases the rate of formation of 0. While this difference may have been caused by the use of concurrent rather than successive deformation and ag- ing, the X-ray technique which he used was able to monitor only the 0 phase. It is thus possible that the times needed to form 8' were increased moreg than the kinetics of 8' — 8 transformation were accelerated. At 90 pct deformation by cold rolling, Graf and Guinier found that the usual 0' —0 8 sequence is reversed: 0 forms first. von Heimendahl 10 confirmed this result with transmission electron microscopy. Pollard and Nutting, 11 and more recently Driver and Barrand, 9 having used the same technique, report that 9 also forms first during creep deformation. In the present study, the maximum amount of deformation was limited to 50 pct reduction by cold rolling in order to insure that 8 formed principally by the decomposition of . I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES This investigation was conducted on an Al- 3.93 pct Cu alloy, prepared as previously described. 4 Morphological and crystallographic effects of plastic deformation were studied in specimens annealed 6 hr at 548°C, quenched, and then aged for either 3 or 8 hr at 250°C to form large numbers of 0' plates. There are several postulations for the mechanism of slime-coating. Incel proposed the electrostatic hypothesis, del Giudice2 suggested the chemical theory; Bankoff3 reported that slime-coating is inhibited whenever the surfaces of the slime particles are ionized sufficiently for Brownian movement to occur, and is facilitated when they are not. These postulations were examined by experiments involving the Burton tube, the cataphoretic cell, and slime-coating. The techniques involved will be described elsewhere in this paper. The electrostatic hypothesis, supported by migration experiments in a Burton tube, was abandoned by del Giudice.2 Experiments of mineral migration in a Burton tube. after the idea of Ince with modification, indicated that this apparatus was inefficient for accurate observation. A cataphoretic cell was constructed. The experimental data, as shown in this paper, enable the correlation and advancing of this hypothesis. Del Giudice's chemical hypothesis considered that slime particles are attached to the galena surfaces by a cement formed as the result of a metathetical reaction between the sulphide and the slime particles. Applying this hypothesis, the calcite slime particles were cemented to the galena surface by the formation of a cementing lead carbonate. In a similar way, lead silicate was considered as the cement of quartz slime coating on galena. Experiments verifying this hypothesis were carried out according to the following procedure: Fresh mineral particles selected from the central part of the broken lumps and examined first under a microscope for ascertaining a clean surface were placed in a small beaker (1.5-in. dia. by 2.5 in. deep) half filled with one kind of slime pulp. The dilution of all slime pulp was 4:I and the particle size of slime was minus 400-mesh. After agitation for 5 min. the specimen was removed by a sharp-end tong and washed gently three times in three separate distilled water baths. It was dried before a small electrical fan and examined immediately under a microscope. A photograph was made of the observation. With reference to the published solubilities,' several of these experiments, which contradict the chemical hypothesis, are listed as following: I. The coating of fluorite slime on the galena surface was light but the coating of galena slime on the fluorite surface was heavy. In a similar way, the coating of quartz slime on the galena was fairly light, but the coating of galena slime on the quartz particle was heavy. According to the chemical hypothesis, using the same constituents and regardless of which is the slime, the density of the coating should be expected to be the same. Lewis, B. LINDEMUTH, ?New York, N. Y.-I would like to confirm Dr. Howe's supposition that a process could be worked out for steel along similar lines. About 1 ½ years ago, F. D. Carney and myself were working on the elimination of columnar crystals which are particularly evident in nickel steel. We discussed rotation and varying speeds of rotation, but figured that with just rotation the steel would eventually catch-up to the motion of the mold and that the desired effect could not be obtained in that way, so we decided to alternate the direction of rotation. We rigged up in ordinary commercial turntable and on the same mounting attached a blast, furnace and mud gun, which is a simple steam cylinder, and mounted an 18-in. ingot mold on the turntable. The turntable had a stroke of about 10° to 12°, with stops at the ends. The steam cylinder would bang the table against the stops so that the stopping was so violent that it would tend to keep the metal in motion when the mold stopped and thus wash away any crystals that would form. We made quite a few interesting experiments; the results of which were that the columnar crystallization was entirely eliminated. At the same time we cast ingots in a similar mold, allowing the molds to remain stationary; these showed columnar crystals of from 2 to 4 in. in depth. The grain structure of the balance of the ingots, which were rotated, was very much finer than the grain structure of the ingots that were cast and allowed to cool slowly. The experiments were made on a 0.35 per cent. carbon nickel steel, which is probably more susceptible to columnar crystallization than any other. I think that the rolling properties and the forging properties of some alloy steels could be very much improved by a similar method, or some commercial method of casting ingots to eliminate this columnar crystallization.

Quantitative texture determinations were made for rolled and for rolled and annealed strips of 3, 6, and 10 pct Zn brasses. The main components of the rolling texture gradually shift over a wide composition range from the orientation characteristic of copper to that of 70-30 brass. At least the main features of the corresponding gradual changes in the annealing texture may be accounted for qualitatively on the basis of the oriented growth theory of annealing textures. All the oriented nucleation-type theories are notably less successful in accounting for the observed textures. EARLIER investigations by von Goeler and Sachs,' Dahl and Pawlek,' and Brick, Martin, and Angier" suggested that the annealing texture of copper is more sensitive to the addition of solute elements than the rolling texture. It was reported3 that the cube texture changes over into a brass-type recrys-tallization texture on addition of about 1 pct Zn, while the deformation texture changes only at about 5 pct Zn. Such behavior would be difficult to reconcile with any theory of annealing texture formation that relates the annealing texture to the deformation texture. In particular, the oriented growth theory of the cube texture" is based on a certain orientation relationship between the cube texture and the main components of the deformation texture which could not be reconciled with the reported behavior of low brasses. It was, therefore, of interest to re-examine these textures by means of the quantitative methods now available. The deformation and annealing textures of rolled a brasses with approximately 3, 6, and 10 pct Zn have been determined in terms of (111) and (200) pole figures. Experimental Methods The chemical analyses of the Cu-Zn alloys of commercial purity used in the present work are given in Table I. Chill-cast bars of the tabulated compositions were rolled and annealed according to the following schedule: I—rolling from 1.2 to 1.02 in. thickness, 15 pct reduction area, annealing 15 min at 450°C; 2— rolling from 1.02 to 0.867 in. thickness, 15 pct reduction area, annealing 15 min at 450°C; 3—rolling from 0.867 to 0.600 in. thickness, 31 pct reduction area, annealing 2 hr at 540°C; 4—rolling from 0.600 to 0.400 in. thickness, 33 pct reduction area, annealing 2 hr at 480°C. In the final straight rolling of 96.25 pct reduction area, the strips were reversed end to end after each pass. The final annealing temperature was determined for each alloy by annealing specimens of the cold-rolled strips in salt bath for 5 min at varying temperatures. The results of the hardness measurements are given in Fig. 1, where the final annealing temperature used for each alloy in determining the annealing texture is indicated by a cross.

A relatively small area in Malaya, about 200 miles long by 40 miles wide, is the most important source of tin in the world. Some tin is recovered in other parts of the peninsula. Of the tin mined, 98 pct is recovered from alluvial deposits. From 1935 to 1941 the average annual world production of tin was 190,000 tons. The average annual production from Malaya during the same period was 62,000 tons or about one third of the total. Other producing countries, in order of importance, were the Netherlands East Indies 34,000 tons, Bolivia 30,000, Belgian Congo, Nigeria, Siam, Burma, China, and a few others with smaller amounts. The serious shortage of tin during the war period was due to the fact that the Japanese were occupying Malaya, Netherlands East Indies, Siam, Burma, and China which, together, formerly were producing 65 pct of the world supply.

Sodium sulfate is an important industrial chemical, being one of perhaps a dozen or so chemical commodities produced and consumed in the United States in quantities exceeding 1 Mt/a. In recent years approximately half that production has come from natural sources, whereas 27 years ago only 25% was derived from these sources. Table 1 illustrates the history of production of natural sodium sulfate in the United States. Production of natural sodium sulfate from various types of deposits is the main source of this chemical in Canada and Mexico, and probably in Argentina, Chile, Spain, and the USSR. Mineralogy and Physical Properties Sodium sulfate is widespread in occurrence and is a common constituent of many mineral waters, as well as seawater. Atmospheric precipitation contains sulfate; it is one of the major dissolved constituents of rain and snow (Davis and DeWiest, 1966). Many of the saline lakes throughout the world contain varying amounts of sodium sulfate. Because sodium is usually the dominant cation, some workers make an anionic distinction, referring to lakes containing predominately sulfate as bitter lakes and those containing predominately carbonate as alkali, or soda lakes (Bateman, 1950). Sodium sulfate in its natural form is found as the hydrous salt mirabilite (commonly called Glauber's salt), and as thenardite, the anhydrous variety. The largest quantities occur in the form of mirabilite. Sodium sulfate is found in varying degrees of purity, from theoretically pure efflorescent crystals of mirabilite to combinations and admixtures of other salts and impurities. It is a common constituent of some brines; from this source much is extracted commercially. [ ]

The conductivity of liquid copper sulfide has been measured as a function of the mole fraction of sulfur in the melt at three temperatures: 1170°, 1250°, and 1300°C. The results show that a) the conductivity of copper-rich Cu,S is independent of the sulfur pressure in the furnace, and b) the conductivity of sulfur-rich copper sulfide increases rapidly with sulfur pressure. Assuming that the band theory is applicable to liquids leads to the conclusion that copper-rich copper sulfide is an intrinsic semiconductor, in which case electrons act as carriers. The activation energy for conduction in this case has been calculated to be 0.7 ev. On the other hand, sulfur-rich copper sulfide behaves as a p-type semiconductor, positive holes being responsible for conduction. IN order to elucidate the structure of Liquid copper (1) sulfide, Derge, Pound, and Osuchl have studied the electrical conductivity of this compound as a function of temperature. Their results showed that the conductivity is rather high, of the order of 100 ohm" cm", and that the temperature coefficient of conductivity is positive. This high conductivity seemed to indicate electronic rather than ionic conduction. This conclusion was checked further by Derge, Pound, and Yang,2 who measured the current efficiencies of copper sulfide melts at various temperatures. In all cases, the current efficiency was found to be nil, indicating the absence of appreciable ionic contribution to the conduction in

THE steel industry has always been noted for producing men of forceful and versatile personality, many of whom combine the practicality that results from wide experience with an excellent theoretical background that comes from a college training plus years of wide and constant study of metallurgical literature. One of the best known examples of this type is Earle C. Smith, present Chairman of the Iron and Steel Division. After graduating from Ohio State and from Columbia, where he studied under Campbell, Earle started his career at that grand old prewar training school for steel men the Illinois Steel Co., where in the days of the twelve-hour shift he worked on the open-hearth floor. Following World War I, when he was in charge of government inspection at the Central Steel Co., Massillon, Earle held successively jobs of increasing responsibility with Central Alloy Steel, and when this company was taken over by Republic in 1930 he was made assistant district manager and a few years later was appointed chief metallurgist of the whole corporation.

In the establishment of the relationship between weldability and hardenability, two methods have been employed in correcting for the grain growth produced in the heat-affected zone: first, the hardenability calculated from chemical composition* may be corrected to the grain size observed in an actual weld? or, second, a hardenability test may be made on the steel quenched from a temperature high enough to produce a grain size comparable to that found in the heat-affected zone.8 In order to obtain grain sizes in the end-quench hardenability bar comparable to those resulting in the base metal from the welding cycle, a quenching temperature of 2Ioo°F. has been used. In studies of the end-quench hardenability specimen quenched from 2Ioo°F. instead of from a lower temperature of I7OO°F., it is impor-TaiiT to ascertain The relative cooling rates for various distances along the bar. It is a question as to whether the cooling occurs at the same rate or whether there is any significant difference from the standard cooling-rate curve published by Jominy and confirmed by others.4,5 This paper reports experimental evidence concerning the effect of quenching temperature on the cooling rates in the end-quench hardenability test. The effect of quenching temperatures on cooling rates has been studied by a number of investigators.6'7 French has considered this effect from both theoretical and experimental aspects. In French's studies on complete quenching of spheres and rounds, an increase in the quenching temperature caused an increase in the cooling rate at 720°C. at the center of the specimen. The center cooling velocity also has been shown to be dependent upon the surface per unit volume for the type of specimens studied; the velocity of cooling increases with an increase in the surface per unit volume. Three methods of indicating the rapidity of cooling of a body of metal during a quenching operation have been propped: I. The time it takes for the metal to cool from the quenching temperature to a temperature halfway between the quenching temperature and the temperature of the quenching medium (half-temperature time): Grossmann, Asimow and Urban7 justify the use of this criterion by the fact that the half-temperature time includes the temperature and time of incubation as well as the zone of formation of pearlite and, further, the data so derived accord very closely with experimental values. 2. The room temperature flow characteristics of a series of Cu-Cr alloys are found to be related to the amount and characteristics of the chromium-rich precipitate. The results are consistent with the theory of Fisher, Hart, and Pry, which considers the trapping to dislocation loops around precipitate particles. THE use of dispersed phases for hardening metals, particularly high temperature alloys, has been practiced for several years. Current theories describing the effects of dispersions on the basis of dislocation theory have been proposed by Mott and Nabarro.l-4 rowan," and Fisher, Hart, and Pry.8 These theories recently have been discussed by Hart,' who pointed out that the experimental data available for comparison with theoretical calculations for overaged alloys are confined to studies by Gensamer, Pearsall, Pellini, and Low,8 Shaw, Sher-by, Starr, and Dorn,9 and some hitherto unpublished data on Cu-Cr alloys which will be described herein. Certain difficulties were associated with the interpretation of the first two studies. Gensamer, Pearsall, Pellini, and Low were concerned principally with interparticle spacing and did not document particle sizes. Shaw, Sherby, Starr, and Dorn included all the data in their report which was necessary for the theoretical evaluation, but their study is subject to some question1" due to difference in prior history of various specimens and due to systematic differences in particle characteristics" which appeared to be associated with differences in the magnification of their microscopic examination. The current study was undertaken to obtain critical data in a manner which avoids some of these limitations. Specimens of eight Cu-Cr alloys remaining from a previous investigation'' were available in the form of 100 mil sheet of the compositions shown in Table I. At 200 mil this material had been previously an- nealed ½ hr at 1000°C, water quenched, and cold rolled 50 pct. Samples were further cold rolled to a thickness of 20 mil for a total reduction of 90 pct. Sheet tensile specimens of standard geometry with a gage length 2½ in. long and 0.20 in. wide were machined from this sheet. These specimens were then annealed in a dried N2-H2 atmosphere for the times and temperatures indicated in Table I. This anneal served two purposes: 1—to obtain a fairly uniform and nearly constant grain size of 0.015 to 0.022 mm average diameter, and 2—to precipitate a fairly uniform, nearly spherical over-aged dispersion of essentially pure chromium. A typical microstructure illustrating the grain size and the uniformity of the dispersion is shown in Fig. 1. A typical dispersion illustrating the range of sizes and shapes of the particles is shown in Fig. 2. The tensile specimens were tested in the Instron equipment described in ref. 11 at room temperature at a strain rate of 0.04 in. per in. per min. Three tests were run on each alloy with sufficient repro-ducibility that a single true stress-true plastic strain curve could be drawn through the three sets of data for each alloy. Typical curves are shown in Fig. 3.

INTRODUCTION There is a lot of discussion about the relative merits of sinter and pellets as components of a BF-burden. Many people claim that sinter is to be preferred and that the percentage of pellets in the burden must be restricted to 20%. During BF-trials in IJmuiden various amounts of pellets having various basicities were tried. It was concluded that there were no significant differences in furnace performance. Consequently the choice between sinter and pellets must be based on the local manufacturing costs (1). Table 1 gives a summary of the pellet experience in IJmuiden. [ ] Because the BF-trials were relatively short, a survey of published BF-operating data has been undertaken to investigate if differences between a sinter and pellet based BF- practice could be found. The comparison of BF-operating results has been restricted to coke rate and productivity.

Before describing the electrostatic processing of feldspar, it might be well to review some of the basic definitions and terminology of feldspars. The feldspar minerals constitute a group of alumino-silicates of potassium, sodium, and calcium. Barium feldspar sometimes occurs naturally but is very rare. Hardness varies between 6 and 6.5 and specific gravity between 2.5 and 2.8. Color is generally white or pale shades of red, yellow, or green. The approximate chemical composition of the principal feldspars is given in Table I. The albite (sodium aluminum silicate) and an orthite (calcium aluminum silicate) feldspars are the end members of a series called plagioclase. These two molecules form a complete solid solution series ranging from pure soda feldspar at one end to the pure lime feldspar at the other end. Intermediate solid solutions are known as oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytoconite. The general structure throughout this series is the same. Sodium and calcium may replace each other and silicon and aluminum may replace each other in the structure.

At the request of the Council of the Institute, I have the honor to submit the following remarks upon the Program of Tests under which the current work of the Watertown Arsenal Testing Laboratory is carried on, which comprises, among other items, the tests of steel ingot metal and derivative shapes. The intended scope of the tests may be illustrated by extracts from the descriptive part of the program as submitted by the Laboratory under date of April 17,1907, and subsequently approved by the Chief of Ordnance, U. S. A. Under Item 1, Ingot Metal—Open hearth, acid and basic; Bessemer, acid and basic; crucible; fluid compressed and uncompreesed—descriptive remarks were made as follon-s: "A thorough, fundamental inquiry into the physical properties of steel necessarily begins with the ingot metal. Investigations, having for their object the improvement of steels, should also begin with the ingot. A knowledge of the ingot structure is essential for judging of the subsequent behavior or appearance of the metal. The high-temperature oxidation of Pt metals results' in the formation of volatile oxides. The evaporation of which considerably increases the metal losses in oxygen-containing atmospheres when compared with high-vacuum or inert-atomosphere conditions. The paper describes gravimetric investigations carried out to determine the metal losses of polycrystalline samples of Ru, together with earlier studies on Ir and Pt at oxygen pressures of 10-3 to 1000 mbar and temperatures > 1000 °C. A strong pressure and temperature dependence is noted. Preliminary results of the oxidation of Pd are reported, too (665 mbar 02, 1100-1300 °C). The oxidation mechanism is discussed and the oxidation rates of Ru, Pd, Ir and Pt are compared with those of the other Pt metals Rh and 0s and of refractory metals.

FOR the purpose of the following discussion the word "research" is interpreted as including all phases of development work on methods of manufacture, metallurgical characteristics, and uses of iron and steel. Research in the iron and steel industry then includes both plant re- search and laboratory research. Since iron and steel came into being, the steel consumer's plant and the steel producer's plant have been important factors in the development of the steel industry. Good minds have always been associated with both consumer and producer plants, so marked progress was made in the industry even when these were the only types of research and development groups in action.

In the study of metallographic specimens in the electron microscope, there is need for a method of locating the same field in both the light microscope and the electron microscope. This need arises chiefly from the fact that in the electron microscope the magnification and degree of resolution are so much higher, and the field so much smaller than in the light rnicroscope that it is often difficult, if not impossible, to identify positively what is being observed. The difficulty is increased by the fact that, because a transparent film replica of the metal surface must be used in the electron microscope, micro-constituents can be identified not by their color but only by their texture and contours. For these reasons it is desirable to obtain a series of photographs showing the same field in both microscopes in order that the appearance of common microstructures and micro-constituents in the electron microscope may be identified and catalogued for future reference. The need for a method of locating the same field in both microscopes arises also when it becomes desirable to enlarge in the electron microscope for more detailed study a particular interesting structure observed in the light microscope. Using the standard polystyrene-silicalJ replica technique, in which the silica film replica is fished from the ethyl bromide on a 1/8 in. diam zoo-mesh specimen screen, the possibilities of locating a particular area on the film in the electron microscope are rather remote. The desired structure may be obscured by the wires of the specimen screen or unrecognizable at the high magnification. A solution to the problem would be provided if a specially designed specimen screen, containing an opening which could be absolutely identified and quickly located in the electron microscope, could be fastened to the silica film replica in such a position that the desired field on the specimen would be located at the identifiable opening in the specimen screen. The design for such a specimen screen, a method for producing it, and a technique for fastening it to the silica film replica are described below. Description OF Method The Specimen Screen A simple design for a specimen screen containing an opening easy to identify and locate in the electron microscope is one with two lines of openings at right angles in the form of a cross. Such a screen is shown in Fig I. The opening at the center of the cross is identified easily and can be located quickly in the light microscope and in the objective image of the electron microscope. The specially designed specimen screens for this work were produced in quantity by electroforming.
