If recent trends in the rotary drill market are indicative of future surface mining operating practice, then the move to scaled-up mining equipment by manufacturers may soon be over. Of the 48 different rotary drills currently produced by 12 manufacturers, over 60% were introduced within the past five years. By far, the new drills have been in the "small" class, capable of producing up to a 229-mm-diam (9-in.) blasthole with 222 kN (50,000 lb) or less of down pressure. New rotary drills in the "large" class, capable of producing a 311-mm-diam (12 1/4-in.) blasthole with up to 423 kN (95,000 lb) down pressure, have also been prominent. In the super-size category, new drills producing blasthole sizes to 444-mm-diam (17 1/2-in.) with up to 578 kN (130,000 lb) have been minimal.

Although methods for determining shaft lining thickness are well documented, little attention has been given to the design of station breakouts and other related shaft ground support structures. This paper discusses design of selected shaft structures for the Cathedral Bluffs project, a planned 54-kt/d (60,000-stpd) oil shale mine in western Colorado. Design philosophy and construction sequences used in the three completed 520-m (1700 ft) deep, 4.6-m (15 ft) to 10.4-m (34-ft) diameter shafts are described.

The use of water-cooled breast-jackets or cinder-tap blocks is a great convenience in lead-smelting, even when siliceous slags are made. If the charges are at all basic it is almost imperative. Jackets of riveted wrought-iron or steel are expensive; those of cast-iron are liable to crack; those of bronze are costly and not durable, being easily penetrated by tapping-bars or destroyed by streams of matte impinging against them. To overcome these objections I introduced at the Hanauer works, in April, 1886, castjackets of steel, which have been in constant use since that time and are to-day as good as new. These jackets were made for us by the Chester Steel Castings Company, of Chester, Pa., at a cost of ten cents a pound at the works of that company. The metal is 5/8-inch thick, and the jackets were cored and tapped for l1/2-inch bushings, affording two large holes for the removal of dirt and incrustations. The same holes are used for feed- and discharge-water through 3/4-inch pipe. I hope the successful introduction here of cast-jackets of steel will lead to their more extended use in all branches of metallurgy where water-cooled surfaces are severely taxed, and where the size and thickness of the castings are not unfavorable to the production of a sound article, impervious to water and of high tensile strength.

The composition and properties of a new type of cementing mixture are discussed. In these compositions, API Class A or C cements are added to n stable water-in-oil emulsion instead of the crsual water. The cement disperses in the oil phase and remains out of contact with the water under normal conditions of mixing and storage. At higher temperatcrres, such as those encountered down-hole during placement, the emulsion breaks and cement hydration can then proceed. An extremely low filtration rate is obtained; the major part of the filtrate is oil. Thickening times of the mixture may be increased to meet the 18,000-ft casing cementing schedule by varying the amount of emzilsifier. As in conventional Portland cement mixtures, high-temperature strength retrogression can be overcome by addition of silica flour. Results of several field app1ication.r show that mixing presents no diffculty if emulsion blenders are used and the emulsion is prepared beforehand. INTRODUCTION Water-in-oil emulsions., in which oil is the continuous or external phase and in which water exists as discrete droplets, have for some time been used successfully in drilling muds to reduce filtration loss.1,2 Applied to cement slurries, the same results are obtained; i. e., the fluid-loss is greatly reduced. In addition, thickening times may be extended, lower densities and strengths obtained, and water-base borehole fluids more easily displaced without contamination of the cement. A low filtration rate is often a desirable property in oil well cements since loss of fluid increases placement difficulties and may also cause damage to water-sensitive producing formations.' In the casing cementing operation where the cement slurry is pumped into the narrow annulus between open hole and casing, rapid loss of fluid to a porous formation can cause the slurry to thicken and plug the annulus before the desired fill is obtained. Where a casing or a liner is cemented against a productive formation and the well completed through perforations, the fluid lost between the time the cement first contacts the formation and the time a set is obtained may invade the zone past the depth of the perforations. If the sand contains a material which will swell upon contact with cement filtrate, permanent damage may result. Previous methods for reducing the fluid-loss of cements have employed bentonite4 as an additive, usually with a lignosulfonate as a dispersant, or a derivative of some naturally occurring polymeric material such as cellulose ether." Oil emulsion cements have also been proposedv or fluid-loss reduction, but these have been of the oil-in-water type. Bentonite cements have been used most widely and have been successful in reducing incidence of premature setting of cement attributable to loss of water by filtration. It is the purpose of this paper to describe preparation and properties of a water-in-oil emulsion cement and to relate procedures followed and results obtained in several field applications. DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM AND MECHANISMS A water-in-oil emulsion cement is prepared by adding an API Class A or C cement to a stable water-in-oil emulsion. Fig. 1 is a photomicrograph of this emulsion before addition of cement. Here the droplets are water and the surrounding medium is diesel oil. High emulsion stability is indicated by the small droplet size [1-5 microns], and by their uniformity.' To form a stable water-in-oil emulsion as illustrated, several conditions must be met. A predominantly hydrophobic emulsifier must be present in sufficient concentration to produce a strong interfacial film; initially, the phase volume ratio (the water-to-oil ratio) must be low;

PART 1: DENSE MEDIUM SEPARATION by E. R. PALOWITCH and A. W. DEURBROUK INTRODUCTION During 1965, 64.9 percent of the 512 million tons of bituminous coal and lignite produced was cleaned mechanically, of which 95 million tons was cleaned by dense medium processes.l The percentage of bituminous coal and lignite cleaned mechanically by dense medium processes rose from 7.0 to 28.5 percent from 1938 to 1965. Dense medium separations include those coal preparation processes which clean raw coal by immersing it in a fluid having a density intermediate between clean coal and reject. As there is a general correlation between ash content and specific gravity, it is possible to achieve the required degree of removal of ash-forming impurities from a raw coal by regulating the specific gravity of the separating fluid. Dense medium processes offer the following advantages over other coal cleaning processes : 1. Ability to make sharp separations at any specific gravity within the range normally required even in the presence of high percentages of the feed in the range of e 0.1 specific gravity units. 2. Ability to maintain a separating gravity that can be controlled with ±0.005 specific gravity units. 3. Ability to handle a wide range of sizes (up to 14 inches). 4. Relatively low capital and operating costs when considered in terms of high capacity and small space requirements. 5. Ability to change specific gravity of separation to meet varying market requirements. 6. Ability to handle fluctuations in feed both in terms of quantity and quality. HISTORY Sir Henry Bessemer patented the first dense medium process in 1858. Many grindability tests have been made in the Allis-Chalmers laboratory since the tabulated results were last published.' The lists of standard ball-mill and standard rod-mill grindability tests are brought up to date in this paper, and considerable new material is added. This includes a tabulation of open-circuit grinding tests, with impact and compression-crushing tests. The standard ball-mill grindability tests (Table I) were made in a standard laboratory ball mill, 12 by 12 in. inside, running at 70 rpm, with a charge of 285 iron balls ranging from 1½ to 3/4 in. in diameter and weighing 20,125 grams. Seven hundred cubic centimeters of minus 6-mesh stage-crushed dry feed was used, and the circulating load was maintained constant at 250 pct by adjusting the number of mill revolutions for each grinding period. Tests were made at all mesh sizes from 28 to 200, and the grindability is the number of net grams of screen undersize produced per revolution. The table includes 479 tests. It has been calculated that the ball mill does 52.3 joules of useful work on the ore per revolution2 with 93 joules input to the mill. The standard rod-mill grindability tests (Table 2) were made in a laboratory tilting rod mill, 12 in. in diameter by 24 in. long inside, with a wave-type lining, running at 46 rpm. The grinding charge consisted of six I1/4-in. diameter and two 13/4-in. diameter steel rods, all 21 in. long and weighing 33,380 grams. The mill was rotated level for eight revolutions, then tilted up 5' for one revolution, down 5° for one revolution, and returned to level for eight revolutions. It was discharged by tilting downward at 45° for 30 revolutions. Feed consisted of 1250 cc of minus in. stone and the circulating load was maintained constant at 100 pct by adjusting the number of mill revolutions for each grinding period. Tests were made at all mesh sizes from 3 to 65, and the rod-mill grindability is the number of net grams of screen undersize produced per revolution. The table includes 105 tests. The impact and compression-crushing tests (Table 3) are given in a table that is an extension of a previous publication8 in which the method of testing was described in detail. Two equal hammers weighing about 30 lb each were arranged to strike simultaneous blows on opposite sides of the test specimen. Broken pieces of rock passing a 3-in. square and retained on a 2-in. square were set up with the smallest dimension between the hammers, and this distance was measured. The height of the hammers was increased slightly before each blow until the specimen broke, and the foot-pounds per inch of thickness was calculated. Ten pieces

C.-I would like to hear some further detail as to the California deposits. L. C. MORGANROTH, Pittsburgh, Pa.-We have examined the California deposits at various times; I have been over practically all of them myself. These deposits are all of the massive variety. While it is possible that it could be mined and used for metallurgical purposes, it is not feasible because it costs too much. At the present time magnesite which is mined in California is used in the making of plaster, or by the paper trade. Careful figures show that if the California magnesite could be delivered to Atlantic seaports in the crude state at not over $4 a gross ton, and assuming that it would give the same results as the Austro-Hungarian magnesite, it would be cheaper to use the latter. It is also more difficult to dead-burn the massive magnesite, for while it starts to give up its gas readily, the difficulty consists in driving off the last few per cent., and unless this is driven off the magnesite will absorb C02 from the air, so that in a few months it may have 10 or 12 per cent. As is well known, many questions affecting the properties and uses of a metal cannot be answered without careful consideration of the state of purity realized in the various operations of preparation, refining, or special treatment that have brought the product to its final state. The occurrence of an impurity in minute quantity offers no guarantee that its effect will be inconsiderable because dissolved substances often modify the properties of a metal quite out of proportion to their concentration. In such cases the determination of solid solubility must be accepted as a problem of considerable difficulty, requiring the use of especially purified materials and methods not ordinarily used in the metallurgical laboratory. This aspect of the equilibrium between metals and their oxides is especially important and a search for fundamental data reveals little except .conflicting opinion even concerning the systems of common occurrence and interest. Rhines and Mathewson1 in 1934 studied the solubility of oxygen in solid copper by annealing to equilibrium in air and gave reasons for the failure of other methods, notably the ordinary procedure of heat-treatment followed by microscopic examination, to yield reliable results. In this paper, a similar study has been made of the solubility of oxygen in cobalt. The simple theory of this method is outlined below.

There are several methods described in the literature for the determination of the order and the rate constant for the flotation of minerals. These often involve some type of computational or graphical procedures. A relatively simpler method developed on the basis of a technique used by Chang" in chemical kinetics is described in this paper. Chang's technique, like most others in chemical kinetics," is based on the law of mass action which states that the rate of a chemical reaction is proportional to the active masses of the reacting substances at any given time. Application of this law to the flotation of minerals would involve the adaptation of the terms "flotation" for "chemical reaction" and "floatable amount of the minerals" for "the active masses of the chemical reactants." There are indeed a large number of physical processes controlling the actual flotation rate. The most inefficient one of these could be considered equivalent to the slowest reaction in a series of chemical reactions. If variables such as aeration rate and agitation are kept at constant levels, the rate of flotation under free flotation conditions (i.e., conditions under which the suspension is dilute) will be given by the following equation: where C is the concentration of the floatable minerals in the pulp at any given time t, K is the rate constant, and n is the order of the reaction. If we represent the floated fraction of the floatable mineral at time t as m (0 m - 1) and C at t = 0 as Ca, integration of Eq. 1 yields

Ely:1 "Conservation, narrowly and strictly considered, means the preservation in unimpaired efficiency of the resources of the earth; or in a condition so nearly unimpaired as the nature of the case, or Wise exhaustion, admits. And broadly considered, it means more than the word itself implies, for it naturally includes an examination of methods Whereby the natural inheritance of the human race may be improved; and still more broadly considered, and as used in popular discussion, it includes a treatment of the effects of productive conservation methods upon distribution. "Conservation means a sacrifice of the present generation to the future generations Whenever it is carried too far. There is a sharp limit to the economic sacrifice that we may reasonably ask the private person to make for even the present Welfare, and the limit is still sharper when we come to consider the interests of future generations." In a paper on the iron ores of America, presented to the Pan-American Scientific Congress at Washington, I have emphasized the fact that the reserves of iron ores in the two Americas are enormously in excess of the requirements of the present generation, in fact, so large that no shortage is to be anticipated for many generations in the future; that a large part of the value of iron ores is put into them by man's efforts to make them available. This fact is fundamental for the intelligent consideration of- policies of conservation as applied to iron ore. As I interpret it, this fact makes it practically unnecessary that the present generation should make any especial sacrifice for future generations in the way of conservation of its iron-ore resources. Even if we were disposed to look forward to a period of 100 or 200 years, with a view to insuring the welfare of the people living at that time, it is doubtful whether any procedure we could now formulate would materially help them in the matter of iron ores, so large are the reserves available. In order that an appeal for conservation may be effective it must obviously favor the welfare of the present or immediately following generations; it must promise benefits to general and individual welfare during a period within the range of comprehension of the average man.

The volume-diffusion coefficients of Nb-95 and Ta-182 in niobium have been measured over the temperature range 878° to 2400°C. High-temperature specimens (T 21500°C) were sectioned by conventional lathe and grinding techniques while low-temperature specimens were sectioned by an anodizing and stripping technique previously described. Over a range of more than ten orders of magnitude in diffusivity, the self-diffusion data is well-represented by the equation: D = (1.1+ 0.2) exp [- (96,000 * 900)/RT ] cm2/sec Upward deviations from this line are explained by short-circuit diffusion in combination with the loss of resolution of the sectioning techniques. Oxygen contamination within the range 100 to 450 ppm was found to have little or no effect on the self-diffusivitj 01 niobium. In a limited number of measurements, the diffusivity of Ta-182 in niobium was found to be about half that of Nb-95 in niobium. These data may be described by D = (I.0+0.90.5)exp [- (99,300 * 2400) /RT ] PREVIOUSLY reported studies of self-diffusion in niobium were by Resnick and Castleman1 and Peart, Graham, and Tomlin.2 The data of Resnick and Castleman over a temperature range 1585" to 2120°C show considerable scatter but. can be represented by D = (12.4 *0.8) exp [-(105,000+3OOO)/RT] cm2/sec The limited data of Peart, Graham, and Tomlin follow the equation D = 1.3 exp (-95,00O/RT) cm2/sec In view of recent diffusion data for ß zirconium3 and 0 titanium4 in which Arrhenius-type plots do not yield straight lines and of the potential high- temperature uses of niobium and its alloys, we thought it important to investigate the diffusion behavior of this bcc refractory metal over a large temperature range. This has recently been done for molybdenum,5 chromium,6 vanadium,"" and tantalum.9 Niobium was a particularly suitable material for this study largely because of the development of an anodizing and stripping sectioning technique which enables diffusivities as small as l0-19' sq cm per sec to be determined accurately.10 In addition to self-diffusion data, data were obtained for the diffusion of Ta-182 in niobium and for the effect of varying oxygen content on self-diffusion. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The niobium was obtained from three sources: 1) melting stock from Shieldalloy Corp., 2) electron-beam melted single crystals, 1/2 in. diameter, from Semi-Elements, Inc., and 3) oxygen-doped, electron-beam melted single crystals from Materials Research Corp. The melting stock was electron-beam melted and specimens 5/8 in. diameter by 1/2 in. long were machined from the center of the bar. The analysis supplied by the vendor and an interstitial analysis of one of the specimens are given in Table I. The single crystals (type 2 above) were cut with a jeweler's saw to specimens about 3/8 in. long. The interstitial analysis of this material is given in Table 11. This material was used

Salley—The authors and ourselves" independently came to similar conclusions both as to the value of tracer methods for the study of flotation and the general nature of collector-mineral interaction. The dodecylamine-quartz system appears to be simpler than the dithiophosphate-galena one, and the results therefore appear clearer. It is evident from a comparison of the two papers, however, that care must be used in extending the results to other more complicated systems. In the case of dodecylamine-quartz, the possible influence of micelle formation is of interest. There is no a priori reason why complete monolayer formation should necessarily occur at the concentration for micelle formation, since sorption depends on the nature of the substrate as well as on the properties of the solute in solution which alone determine micelle formation. Indeed, the fact that the onset of increased adsorption, point B in fig. 2, occurs at a concentration one tenth the critical value for micelles might imply that micelle formation does not have an influence. Interestingly enough, the data may be handled by the methods used for multilayer adsorption of gases on surfaces. Thus, if the amount adsorbed is plotted versus concentration, a sigmoid type curve is obtained, similar in form to a so-called Type I1 isotherm13 generally attributed to multimolecular adsorption. A monolayer value of about 0.12 mg per g may be estimated from the knee of this isotherm. On the other hand, if a plot is made according to the multilayer gas equation for adsorption to an unrestricted number of layers, eq 38,13 assuming the critical micelle concentration as the saturation concentration, the data above 120 mg per liter fall on a straight line from which a monolayer adsorption of 0.3 mg per g results. These considerations suggest that the monolayer may occupy an area somewhat less than the geometric value of 0.4 mg per g, and that micelle formation may indeed be a factor in the adsorption. the angle between the solid-liquid and liquid-gas interfaces, measured through the liquid. The value of the equilibrium contact-angle is uniquely determined by the value of the interfacial energies of the three intersecting interfaces and is independent of other forces in the system. When the liquid-gas interface intersects the solid at an edge—as was the case for all the experiments reported in this paper—the orientation of the solid-liquid interface is indeterminate or varies through 90" for a right-angle edge. Mr. Morris has called the angle between the horizontal and the liquid-gas interface for this edge condition a "static contact-angle." I feel that this term is unnecessarily misleading. In the first place, "static contact-angle" sounds too much like "equilibrium contact-angle." In the second place, the magnitude of the "static contact-angle," which I would prefer to call the "supporting angle," is determined by the forces in the system other than those derived from the interfacial energies, hence "contact angle" is misleading. If Mr. Morris had said that the "supporting-angle" is variable and depends on the weight of the particle and size of the bubble and that it has a maximum possible value equal to the equilibrium contact-angle, his discussion would have been more accurate. T. M. Morris (author's reply)—Mr. Kellogg puts forth a reasonable criticism of some of the terminology used in the paper. I agree that the term "static contact angle" may be misleading. Substitution of the term "supporting angle" or "vector angle" may be more suitable. F. X. Tartaron—In this paper the author presents a very interesting mathematical development of the forces present when a mineral particle adheres to an air bubble. Excellent concordance is obtained between mathematical formulation and experimental results. It is the writer's understanding that when the mineral surface presented to an air bubble is greater than the area of contact, the maximum contact angle is obtained. However, this contact angle represents distortion of the bubble, the normal shape of which is spherical or in cross-section, circular. The surfaces of the author's bubbles range from 0.79 to 12.6 sq mm. The area of contact of the glass rod (0.15 mm diam) is 0.017 sq mm. Thus, ratio of bubble surface to mineral area of contact ranges from 47 to 741 in round numbers. If we take a %-in. diam bubble and a 65-mesh (0.208 mm) particle of cubical shape, the ratio of bubble surface to mineral area of contact is 2931. Mineral particles do not readily become attached to air bubbles. Taggart has shown that in pneumatic flotation machines collector-coated particles are only temporarily attached to bubbles. They keep falling off and down in the froth but at a delayed rate as compared with gangue. Spedden and Hannan's motion pictures confirm the difficulty of attaching particles to air bubbles. Salley—The authors and ourselves" independently came to similar conclusions both as to the value of tracer methods for the study of flotation and the general nature of collector-mineral interaction. The dodecylamine-quartz system appears to be simpler than the dithiophosphate-galena one, and the results therefore appear clearer. It is evident from a comparison of the two papers, however, that care must be used in extending the results to other more complicated systems. In the case of dodecylamine-quartz, the possible influence of micelle formation is of interest. There is no a priori reason why complete monolayer formation should necessarily occur at the concentration for micelle formation, since sorption depends on the nature of the substrate as well as on the properties of the solute in solution which alone determine micelle formation. Indeed, the fact that the onset of increased adsorption, point B in fig. 2, occurs at a concentration one tenth the critical value for micelles might imply that micelle formation does not have an influence. Interestingly enough, the data may be handled by the methods used for multilayer adsorption of gases on surfaces. Thus, if the amount adsorbed is plotted versus concentration, a sigmoid type curve is obtained, similar in form to a so-called Type I1 isotherm13 generally attributed to multimolecular adsorption. A monolayer value of about 0.12 mg per g may be estimated from the knee of this isotherm. On the other hand, if a plot is made according to the multilayer gas equation for adsorption to an unrestricted number of layers, eq 38,13 assuming the critical micelle concentration as the saturation concentration, the data above 120 mg per liter fall on a straight line from which a monolayer adsorption of 0.3 mg per g results. These considerations suggest that the monolayer may occupy an area somewhat less than the geometric value of 0.4 mg per g, and that micelle formation may indeed be a factor in the adsorption. the angle between the solid-liquid and liquid-gas interfaces, measured through the liquid. The value of the equilibrium contact-angle is uniquely determined by the value of the interfacial energies of the three intersecting interfaces and is independent of other forces in the system. When the liquid-gas interface intersects the solid at an edge—as was the case for all the experiments reported in this paper—the orientation of the solid-liquid interface is indeterminate or varies through 90" for a right-angle edge. Mr. Morris has called the angle between the horizontal and the liquid-gas interface for this edge condition a "static contact-angle." I feel that this term is unnecessarily misleading. In the first place, "static contact-angle" sounds too much like "equilibrium contact-angle." In the second place, the magnitude of the "static contact-angle," which I would prefer to call the "supporting angle," is determined by the forces in the system other than those derived from the interfacial energies, hence "contact angle" is misleading. If Mr. Morris had said that the "supporting-angle" is variable and depends on the weight of the particle and size of the bubble and that it has a maximum possible value equal to the equilibrium contact-angle, his discussion would have been more accurate. The continuous increase in energy costs has made it necessary to consider a broader use of belt conveyors for the transportation of material from the mine pit to the processing plant. Hard rock has to be crushed before it can be moved by belt conveyors. Systems are in the planning stage for mining hard rock, such as copper and iron ore, by using high-capacity, mobile, or semi-portable crushers. The mobile crusher is located in the pit, and the crushed material is transported by energy-efficient, shiftable belt conveyors out of the pit.
