TWO hundred enthusiastic engineers and coal, op-erators attended a joint meeting of the A. I. M. E., the National Coal Association, and the American So-ciety of Mechanical Engineers in the auditorium of the Alabama Power Co. building at Birmingham, Ala., on Jan. 21. S. W. Farnham, mining engineer of the Goodman Manufacturing Co., Chicago, in his paper on mechanical loading of coal discussed the feasibility of scraper and machine loading. A. R. Anderson of the Jeffrey Manufacturing Co., in a paper on loading coal with conveyors covered their adaptation for long-wall mining and for loading into cars. Discussion of these papers was hampered because the cheap labor costs prevailing in the district have handicapped gen-eral mechanization of the mines. The Bureau of Mines film, "The Story of a Rock-dusted Mine," showing the New Orient mine, West Frankfort, Ill., was also shown at the meeting. F. H. Crockard, president of the Wood-ward Iron Co., represented the A. I. M. E., S. L. Yerkes, vice-president of the Grider Coal Sales Agency, and J. L. Davidson, secretary of the Alabama Mining Institute, represented the National Coal Association, and Paul Wright represented the American Society of Mechan-ical Engineers.

For the past 20 years Alabama has probably led all other coal-producing districts in the proportion of coal prepared by wet washing. All rail mines, with one exception, and a high percentage of truck mines now wash all coal under 3 or 4 in. Most of this coal has been cleaned by jigs, though within the past few years one or more wet-table plants have been installed for cleaning some of the coal from practically all the major seams. These tables supplement either single or multicell jigs usually for one of the following purposes: (I) to wash the finer sizes of raw coal, (2) to rewash the finer sizes of washed coal after they leave the jigs, (3) to re-treat jig middling products. The main purpose of this paper is to present cleaning data and operating factors involved in the preparation by tables of the finer sizes of raw coal. The specific information and data pertain to the Mary Lee seam of coal as extracted at three of the mines of the Alabama By-Products Corporation, which produces coal for both byproduct coke-oven consumption and the general steam market. The Mary Lee seam has long been recognized by coal-preparation authorities as presenting a very difficult ash-reduction problem. Washing characteristics and physical structure of the seam vary widely. Its thickness ranges from 32 in. with no rock parting to 100 in. with from one to three partings. Over the entire field the bed contains bands of bone and rash. These are distributed throughout the seam cross section. A portion of this bone or bony coal occurs as definite bands I in. or more thick; however, some bone is interlocked as layers within the coal and consequently breaks into flakes when the coal is broken. This material is relatively high in ash and its specific gravity varies widely. It has been observed that in most cases in the washing of Mary Lee coal from 10 to 18 per cent of the raw coal is within +0.10 specific gravity of the attempted point of separation. Therefore with the average wet jig, only with extreme difficulty can a low-ash product be obtained without loss of much marketable coal in the refuse. Without entering into the controversial question as to whether modern washing equipment can efficiently handle simultaneously all sizes up to a given maximum, suffice it to state that the comparatively old-type jigs in service at the Alabama By-Products Corporation's mines could not clean the he sizes satisfactorily. Therefore, in 1931 that company installed six diagonal-deck tables at the Barney mine, which were installed as an addition to a complete plant cleaning all coal below minus 3 in. The primary washed product is shipped as steam coal and another portion may be prepared as washed nut for domestic trade. These tables are washing 9 tons per hour of raw coal sized to ¼ in. to o. The washed table coal is mixed with the 3 to ¼-in. jig product to constitute a 3 in. to o steam coal.

COKE with low phosphorus content is required by some of the electrometallurgical and chemical plants recently attracted to the Pacific Northwest by the hydroelectric power available from Bonneville and Grand Coulee dams. Shipping such coke into the area from eastern points involves a high freight charge, and during wartime consumes precious rail and ship-bottom space, so it is highly desirable to produce coke from the coking coals of Washington to meet the requirements of these industries. Although coke has been made from Washington coals since 1884, little has been known about their phosphorus contents or about the extent to which phosphorus could be reduced by cleaning. An investigation was undertaken, therefore, to determine the manner in which phosphorus occurs in the coking coals of Washington and its amenability to removal by ordinary coal-washing methods. PREVIOUS WORK Phosphorus is a deleterious element in coke used for numerous metallurgical processes, including the production of pig iron, yet comparatively little published information is available on the occurrence and elimination of phosphorus in any of the coals of this country. A variation from 0.009 to 0.062 per cent phosphorus in various horizons of the Pittsburgh bed in the Connellsville region of Pennsylania has been reported,1 and a reduction in phosphorus content from 0.020 per cent in the raw coal to 0.018 per cent in the washed coal was obtained in washing coal from the same bed in the Pittsburgh area;2 the latter figures represent average analyses for a year's operation of the washery on about 800,000 tons of coal. A reduction in phosphorus content from 0.018 to 0.011 per cent in washing coal from the Pittsburgh bed at another washery was observed, and the same report provides data on the phosphorus reduction obtained by separating 10 other coals on a bath of 1.35 specific gravity.3 European investigators have been especially active in correlating phosphorus content with petrographic analysis; fusain and durain generally contain the highest percentage of phosphorus, but this relationship is not universal.4 Some of these investigators have found that phosphorus is removed in the coal-washing process,5 but others have observed that the clean coal contained as much or even more phosphorus than the raw coal.6

Of the several extensive deposits of brown iron-ore in Cuba, including those of Mayari and Moa, that of Mayari was the first to be systematically explored, and was selected as the scene of the first operations in the development of this class of ore. Construction-work, begun in the spring of 1907, involved the building of 16 miles of stantlard-gauge railroad and two large double-track inelines, the installation of milling-machinery, a nodulizing-plant, power-plant, shops and shipping-facilities, and the dredging of an extensive basin for deep-draught vessels. Unusual weather-conditions delayed the completion of portions of this work so that the entire plant was not in operation until December, 1900.

It is the purpose of the present paper, while not excluding chemical considerations, to deal more extensively with some of the physical and mechanical aspects of the blast-furnace process, and to point out its dependence, in these respects, on well-known laws. The quantity and cost of ore and flux required to make a ton of iron being determined by circumstances over which the furnace-man, under given conditions as to quality and quantity of product, has commonly little control, the principal item of cost, apart from the saving of labor, which he can aspire to reduce, is that of fuel. To determine the limits of possibility in this direction is clearly the first step in a practical inquiry; and this step is represented herewith in Fig. 1, a diagram showing the total useful effect obtained from a pound of fuel under various conditions, and thus permitting direct comparison, under any given conditions, between actual results and the maximum possible results. The following statements will explain the basis upon which this diagram has been constructed. One pound of fuel, containing 90 per cent. of fixed carbon (which represents average conditions), is taken as the unit. The degree of oxidation of the carbon is measured by the ratio of the two oxides of carbon contained in the top-gases. It is necessary to remember that a considerable quantity of carbon is brought in as carbon dioxide by the flux, and to take account of it and of its condition. It is here considered that the carbon dioxide liberated by the limestone does not affect the analysis of the top-gases, and that the ratio of CO to CO2 will remain unchanged by the addition of limestone; enough CO, being reduced by the solution

EVER since the Phoenicians roamed the known world in quest of metals to harden their helmets and precious metals and gems to adorn their ladies, many other nations have sought metals in the far corners of the earth. During the past 75 years American engineers have been among the foremost in seeking for and developing ore deposits. They have been responsible for many of the principal discoveries and for the application of modern methods to mines in the far comers of the earth. American mining engineers with a zest for travel and an insatiable appetite for metals have also introduced throughout the world many articles made of metal which we consider essential to everyday life. Production and consumption of these metals in many foreign countries has brought to these countries an increased standard of living and added tax revenue to their governments. But unfortunately engineers from this country are no longer given ready access to all the countries of the world. This is not only unfortunate for American engineers but also for the countries that have adopted the exclusion policies and especially so since time has proved that in countries where the American engineers have gradually been excluded there has been a significant decline in the progress of the mining industry. Removal of these barriers to professional men would aid immensely in the world-wide development of the mineral industries. New areas brought into production under the guidance of American engineers with their exceptional know-how would provide more jobs for nationals of the countries involved and a better standard of living for the nations as a whole.

THE carbide-forming tendencies of the various steel-alloying elements, or their affinities for carbon, is a subject that has received considerable attention, but little more than a probable arrangement of the elements as to their carbide-forming tendencies has been proposed. The physical properties of alloy steels depend upon the relative proportions of the elements present and their combinations. One important phase of this subject is the distribution of carbon between the various elements present. The distribution of carbon between iron and other elements evidently will depend upon: (I) the affinity of each for carbon; (2) the relative atomic masses of the elements present; and (3) the possible formation of compounds between the alloying elements and iron and between the elements themselves. In ternary steels the case is simplified, especially in systems in which the element and iron form no compounds. In such systems iron and the alloying element are competing for the carbon present. In this work the distribution of carbon between titanium and iron has been studied by measuring the relative amounts of iron carbide and titanium carbide present in a series of annealed steels in which the ratio of titanium to carbon extended from 0.527 to 4.61. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Ten Fe-Ti-C alloys, weighing about 250 grams each, were prepared by melting under a vacuum, in an induction furnace, Armco iron, carbon-free ferrotitanium (25 per cent Ti), and pure carbon. Vacuum melting prevented the formation of titanium oxides and nitrides, which would complicate the problem. The melts were made in graphite crucibles lined with sintered magnesium oxide. The ingots were cooled in the furnace under a vacuum and were then completely annealed at 950°C. The determination of the amount of titanium carbide present was based upon the established insolubility of titanium carbide in boiling dilute (I :4) sulphuric acid, and the complete solubility of free titanium and titanium-iron compounds in this acid. High-carbon ferrotitanium, which had been treated to remove free Ti and Fe, was found to be completely insoluble in the acid; and the carbon-free ferrotitanium used in making the alloys was found to be completely soluble. Others 1,2 have reported the insolubility of titanium carbide in sulphuric and hydrochloric acids. Turnings from the ingots were digested with boiling sulphuric acid (1:4) until all action had ceased. The carbide residue was filtered off and analyzed for titanium, and in some cases for carbon. This represents the titanium that was united with carbon. The filtrate from the carbide residue contains the portion of the titanium that wasin solid solution in the ferrite. Titanium

There is an error at the bottom of the right-hand column of p. 11, and the top left-hand column of p. 12. The first paragraph of the section EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS should read: "Thermal shock tests were conducted on circular discs of basalt, quartzite, and taconite. Average grain sizes ranged between 0.10 and 0.25 mm. Individual discs were tested only once, either in a cooling or heating shock. Several discs of the same rock type were shocked at a temperature, and the temperature level then was increased for another test by 10° to 20°F until complete fracture occurred when a specimen was quenched. The minimum temperature difference required to initiate cracking, TmiN was observed and used, together with other property values, to compute the dimensionless stress o*max . The observed ?Tmin for cooling shock in different media is tabulated in Table I. The property values E, St, a, and K are shown in Figs. 6, 8, 10, and 11, respectively. Discs of various rocks shocked in different isothermal baths gave o*max values for a wide range of Biot numbers. These o*max values were then compared with the theoretically predicted values."

The discovery of Bromide production in the Fitts field, shallow production in Jackson County of Southwestern Oklahoma, abundant production in the Edmond field, and discovery of many small pools in all parts of the state, were the events that made petroleum history in Oklahoma in 1934. Wildcatting was much more active, as evidenced by a number of new discoveries. There was no important development in the older fields. The rapid decline of the potential of the Oklahoma City field was an important feature of the history of the year. The accompanying tabulation of oil fields (Table 1) is not complete. Many of the early records of operators and pipe line companies are lost and it will be impossible to work up complete statistics for a number of the older fields. The table includes most of the important fields of the state and includes fields of a number of different types. It is hoped that a great many additional fields may be worked up for next year's report. Fitts Pool.—The Fitts pool, in Pontotoc County, was discovered in 1933. Before the middle of 1934, the Pennsylvanian sands yielded -some oil at depths ranging from 1400 to 2800 ft. The Hunton series (Siluro-Devonian) produced most of the oil with considerable gas. In July, 1934, a well in sec. 25, T.2N., R.6E. was completed in the Bromide (Ordovician " Wilcox ") with an initial production of about 300 bbl. a day. Less than a month later a second Bromide sand well was completed in sec. 30, T.2N., R.7E., which made over 200 bbl. an hour. This started an active drilling campaign, which was accelerated when some of the major companies paid good prices for adjacent acreage. At the end of the year, 23 wells had been completed and the rate of development was increasing rapidly. It is a major oil field. The Fitts pool opened a new geological province for oil production. The structure is a faulted anticline in a graben. The producing formation (Bromide) and the Arbuckle lime below it crop out about 2 miles south of present production. The Hunton lime crops out about 2½ miles north. The field is in a sharply folded and faulted area on the northeast side of the Arbuckle uplift. Heretofore, it was generally considered not favorable for oil production, although some gas had been found in various places. OelSEN and Maetz1 detected some 20 years ago the existence of a miscibility gap in iron oxide-CaO-P2O5 slags melted in iron crucibles at about 1400°C. Because of the importance of this system for the dephos-phorization of steel in the basic Bessemer process, equilibria between liquid iron and selected iron oxide-CaO-P2Q slags have been measured since by numerous investigators.2-5 When in equilibrium with metallic iron, the iron oxide of the slag is present mainly as FeO. In connection with oxygen-blowing steelmaking processes, it is useful to know the phase relations in the slag system at higher oxygen pressure, when major parts of the iron oxide are present as Fe2O3. This problem was investigated by Turkdogan and Bills7 by equilibrating the oxide mixtures contained in platinum crucibles with CO2-CO mixtures at 1550°C. It was found that increasing the Fe2O3 content decreases the composition range of the miscibility gap strongly so that the miscibility gap has almost disappeared at pco2/pco = 75. This result was refuted by the careful work of Olette et a1.,''' who equilibrated their slags with controlled Ha-H2-Ar gas mixtures. Their equilibrium measurements, at 1600°C and at oxygen pressures of 5 x 10"* and 10"5 atm, showed that the oxidation state of the iron has almost no influence on the formation of the miscibility gap. The present experiments were undertaken to check the previous results of Turkdogan and Bills. The experiments were performed at 1625°C in the strongly oxidizing atmosphere of air (PO2 = 0.20 atm) for which no experimental data are available. About 10 g of slag were melted in platinum crucibles and held at constant temperature for 1 hr. After equilibration, the crucible was rapidly pulled out of the furnace and cooled in air. The platinum crucible was removed from the sample. The two slag layers were carefully separated with a small diamond disc, and the surface of the top layer, which may have changed its oxidation state during cooling, was removed. The slags were crushed and analyzed chemically for CaO, P2O5, Fe2+, and Fetotal. The starting mixtures were prepared by sintering the desired amounts of reagent-grade 2CaO . P2O5 - H2O, CaCO3, and Fe2O3. Sintering and subsequent crushing were done three times to ensure homogenization. Molybdenum wire resistance heating was used. The furnace was provided with a recrystallized alumina reaction tube which was left open to air at the top. The temperature was controlled electronically. The reported temperature was measured with a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple and is estimated to be accurate within +5°C. The composition of the equilibrated melts is given in Table I. For the graphical illustration of these quaternary slags the type of projection suggested by Trömel and Fritze10 was used. In this representation, Fig. 1, the composition point of a mixture within the tetrahedron Fe2O3-CaO-P2O5-FeO is projected into the Fe2O3-CaO-P2O5, triangle (triangle I) so that the direction of projection is parallel to the side FeO-Fe2O3, and into the triangle Fe2O3-P2O,-Fe0 (triangle 11) so that the direction of projection is parallel to the side CaO-P2O5, of the tetrahedron. The projected point has the coordinates wt pct CaO, wt pct P205, and wt pct (FeO + Fe2O3) in triangle I and wt pct FeO, wt pct Fe2O3, and wt pct (CaO + PzO5) in triangle 11. Both triangles are turned into the same plane around the Fe203-P20, side of the tetrahedron. An illustration of the projection of a quaternary point in the present system is shown in Fig. 1. The advantage of this type of projection is that all four components for an equilibrium curve can be read directly from the diagram. The present results are shown graphically in Fig. 2. DETERMINATION of the surface area of finely divided minerals is of interest to mineral engineers engaged in flotation, comminution, and de-watering studies. In the industrial minerals field, many materials are classified as to fineness according to their specific surface (surface area per unit weight). A method of surface area determination has been tested and used in the Richards Mineral Engineering Laboratories at M.I.T. It involves low temperature krypton adsorption measurements using the technique described by Beebe.' During the past fifteen years a number of new surface measurement techniques have been developed. Those that are broadly applicable to materials dealt with by mineral engineers include the permeability method in which a gas or liquid is passed through the sample, and the low temperature gas adsorption methods first described by Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller."" Efforts to make surface determinations from size distribution curves have long been attempted"."." but because of the uncertainty of sub-sieve size distribution and inaccuracies in screen analyses, the method is at best only a rough approximation. The most widely used gas adsorption method utilizes nitrogen gas." Nitrogen adsorption, however, is not particularly suited as a tool for most mineral engineers because the method is not applicable for surface determinations on coarse materials, that is, materials coarser than approximately 150 to 200-mesh. Other gases have been used in mineral engineering studies, particularly ethane."' lo The use of ethane gas, however, involves .a technique that is too sensitive for most mineral engineering work. The permeability method of surface area determination has the disadvantage of not being sensitive enough to detect the surface represented by minute cracks, the so-called internal surface of a particle. The low temperature krypton adsorption method described by Beebe1 utilizes apparatus and techniques that are essentially the same as those used in the ethane adsorption method."1° The surface area is calculated by the B.E.T. method."-' The krypton adsorption technique is particularly suited to the needs of the mineral engineer because: (1) The method can be used for making surface area measurements of rather coarse materials (35 to 48-mesh), as well as extremely fine materials, such as clays or colloidal slimes with specific surface that might be as high as 20 to 30 mb er g. (2) The use of krypton gas offers the advantage of low saturation pressures (2-3 mm) at the conveniently obtained liquid nitrogen temperature. Therefore the krypton vacuum system need not be designed to measure or withstand internal gas, pressures above one atmosphere as is the case with the nitrogen gas method. (3) The krypton technique offers the safety feature of employing liquid nitrogen, as contrasted to the ethane technique in which liquid oxygen is required. Furthermore, ethane vapor pressure at liquid oxygen temperatures is low (about 10 microns), and a high sensitivity McLeod gage is required for pressure readings. (4) The measurement technique with krypton gas is much simpler and faster, and the apparatus is less elaborate than that required with either nitrogen or ethane gases. Apparatus A krypton surface measurement apparatus like that used at M.I.T. is shown in Fig. 1. It is constructed of pyrex glass. A vacuum is maintained by two mercury diffusion pumps in series backed by a mechanical vacuum pump."' The vacuum thermocouple gage is used for checking the vacuum within the system. This type of gage is quite sensitive down to a pressure of 1 micron of mercury," but may be used to indicate pressures much lower than that

VERY little information is available in the literature concerning the solubility of magnesium in titanium. Aust and Pidgeon&apos; report the solubility of titanium in magnesium to be 0.0025 pct at 650°C and 0.015 pct at 850°C. X-ray diffraction studies failed to detect any evidence of solid solubility. Based on the fact that the addition of titanium to magnesium increases the c/a ratio of magnesium, Busk&apos; suggested that the Mg-Ti system, like the Mg-Zr, is a peritectic. Eisenreich- eported the solubility of titanium in magnesium to be 0.003 pct at 655°C and 0.064 pct at 760°C. Removal of hydrogen from the melt increased the solubility of titanium to 0.115 pct at 800°C. Eisenreich proposes a peritectic-type diagram for the high magnesium side of the system. Recent work&apos; with Ti-Mg diffusion couples indicate that the solid solubility of titanium in magnesium is extremely small and that there is limited solid solubility of magnesium in titanium. Experimental work on the Ti-Mg system is complicated by the fact that the boiling point of magnesium is considerably below the melting point of titanium. Consequently, the usual alloying methods are impractical. Alloying was accomplished in this investigation by sheath-rolling compressed compacts." The alloys were made from titanium sponge and high purity magnesium. Chemical analysis of the sponge showed 0.04 pct Mg, <0.005 pct Al, <0.001 pct Cu, 0.05 pct Fe, 0.022 pct Mn, <0.0025 pct Ni, 0.007 pct Si, <0.005 pct V, and <0.01 pct Zn. All heat treating was conducted in a protective atmosphere by encapsulating the specimens in fused silica ampules under a partial pressure of helium. Equilibrium was achieved by holding the specimens at temperature for periods of 24 to 120 hr. The alloys were hot rolled, cold rolled, and annealed prior to solution heat treatment. Fig. 1 shows the constitutional diagram obtained for the Ti-Mg system up to 1.5 pct Mg. Oxygen was known to be present in the alloys; therefore, it is necessary to consider the alloys as ternary rather than binary and the diagram should be viewed as a plot of a section through the Ti-Mg-0 system. Other investigatorso have shown that the addition of oxy- gen to titanium stabilizes the a phase. The data presented in Fig. 1 indicate that the addition of magnesium to titanium tends to stabilize the p phase. Armour Research Foundation7 has shown that the addition of magnesium to zirconium lowers the a transus and is classified as a p stabilizer in that system. Magnesium is soluble in solid titanium to the extent of at least 1.5 pct in both the a and /3 phases. No intermetallic compounds or magnesium-rich phases were observed either by light microscopy or X-ray diffraction. However, this does not negate the possibility that such phases exist at higher alloy concentrations.

A BALANCED system of internal stress is set up in any metallic structure by plastic deformation below the annealing temperature. The internal stress induced by cold rolling or other fabricating processes is generally recognized and its magnitude is known to be, within certain limits, a function of the degree of cold deformation. The plastic deformation that may accompany rapid cooling from elevated temperatures may not materially change the form of the product. The internal stresses so induced are not, therefore, so evident and nonrecognition of their presence has at times led to engineering failures. The heat treatment of aluminum alloys is a relatively new art and little information is available regarding the magnitude of stresses induced luring the commercial heat treatment of aluminum alloy products is the industrial use of aluminum increases, it is inevitable that products of increasingly large volume be required. It has become necessary in the present commercial utilization of aluminum to heat-treat castings and forgings weighing hundreds of pounds. One of the factors governing the magnitude of internal stresses arising from rapid cooling at elevated temperatures is that of the, size of the structure being treated. Some of the other factors are: cooling rate, elastic properties of the alloy, thermal expansivity, thermal conductivity, and the presence or absence of phase changes. DEURBROUK INTRODUCTION During 1974, 43.9% of the 603,406,000 tons (549,099,000 mt) of bituminous coal and lignite produced was cleaned mechanically, of which 82,280,000 tons (74,875,000 mt) was cleaned by dense medium processes.l The percentage of bituminous coal and lignite cleaned mechanically by dense medium processes increased from 7 to 31 % between 1938 and 1974. Dense medium separations include those coal preparation processes which clean raw coal by immersing it in a fluid having a density inter- mediate between clean coal and reject. As there is a general correlation between ash content and specific gravity, it is possible to achieve the required degree of removal of ash-forming impurities from a raw coal by regulating the specific gravity of the separating fluid. Dense medium processes offer the following advantages over other coal cleaning processes: 1) Ability to make sharp separations at any specific gravity within the range normally required even in the presence of high percentages of the feed in the range of 2 0.1 sp gr units. 2) Ability to maintain a separating gravity that can be controlled with ± 0.005 sp gr units.
