TO metallurgists generally, Arthur S. Dwight is no stranger even to those who do not know him personally. He is one of those contributors to technical progress whose names will go down to posterity because of their being attached to a successful machine or process, such as Dorr, Hardinge, or Marcy, or Wedge, MacDougall, or Herreshoff. The roasting and sintering method and equipment developed by Colonel Dwight and his associate, the late Richard L. Lloyd, may be found in lead smelters throughout the world, and also in many metallurgical works dealing with other ores, including those of iron. It is ordinarily used to desulphurize and agglomerate fine ores for subsequent smelting. Colonel Dwight's citation as James Douglas Medalist reads: "For his contributions to the art of smelting nonferrous ores; and particularly for his pioneer work in developing equipment and technique for sintering such ores and metallurgical products." The medal was awarded at the last Annual Meeting of the A.I.M.E. but unfortunately the medalist was unable to leave Florida at the time to receive it in person.

The purpose of this article is not to compare one type of grinding machinery with another and to conclude from a series of tests that one particular machine is superior to all others. Neither is the reader asked to tire himself with the details of many tests to prove the statements herein made. The Chilean mill stands today almost an outcast from the milling world. It ranks with the applicant for a job who has been given a trial along with others and condemned because he was not able to perform the definite task assigned as well as the others, and was forever eliminated. The judges did not tarry long enough to try this aspirant in a field of a slightly different nature. Even though it has been condemned, the writer contends that the published records will indicate that the trials were never shifted into the field of greatest efficiency for the . Chilean mill. Those of us who cling to this outcast as a fine grinder in our milling operations do not wish, naturally, to be condemned also, with the machine, and yet we feel that we are classed as behind the times, at least in this phase of our milling judgment. Hence there is considerable personal feeling in our efforts. During the last few years there have been published several papers on the relative merits of the various grinding machines. In two of these articles a comparison was made between Chilean mills and cylindrical grinders. In each case the Chilean mill came out second best from about all standpoints. The outstanding feature in these comparisons would seem to be the decided attempt to keep all conditions the same, so that each machine could be judged on its merit. As Mr. David Cole states,1 "We are inclined to regard a direct comparison of grinders arranged side by side, and making a product that affords as nearly as possible the same screen measure, as the Supreme Court in these grinding matters." The writer agrees that this is the very best method for true comparison between machines. The results in the two detailed tests should give the relative merits of the two grinders in doing the work assigned. And they probably do. The conclusion drawn in each case was adverse to the Chilean mill as a fine-grinding machine. However, the duty placed upon the machines was that of converting material that had already been

All electrical geophysical methods depend for their operation upon the effects produced by the flow of an electric current. By studying these effects it is possible to predict the general axis of current flow. The greater flow of current is in the path of greatest effective conductivity; and since the effective conductivity of a mineralized zone is different from that of its surrounding envelope (usually much greater), it is possible to locate such a mineralized zone by the distribution of current. Due consideration must be given, of course, to geological structure, to type of mineralization, and to other factors. A number of methods are used to cause this flow of current, and various methods arc available for detecting the presence of such current flow and for studying its effects. In a rather detailed way, this paper will discuss the theoretical and practical phases of the inductive methods of geophysical prospecting. Electromagnetic Generation of an Electeomotive Force The inductive method is so named because the current flowing in the conductor is obtained by electromagnetic induction, instead of by the use of ground electrodes through which a current is passed as in the applied potential systems, or by direct contact with the orebody. An alternating current flowing in a coil will create an electromagnetic field around the coil. This field will have the same frequency as the current and will radiate or travel outward from the coil in closed magnetic or flux circuits. These flux circuits (in air or a homogeneous medium) will be perpendicular to the plane of the coil and will extend or travel outward with uniform velocity in every direction. Maximum feld exists in the plane of the coil. Such a coil used for transmitting or as the "energizer" will exhibit similar figure-eight characteristics to those exhibited by the direction-finding coil which will be described in detail later.

For nearly a century, the Corocoro deposit has been renowned among geologists from the fact that it shares with the Lake Superior deposits of the United States the distinction of being the only important copper districts where native copper is worked commercially. The Corocoro district, named after the city of Corocoro, the capital of the Province of Pacajes (Department of La Pas, Bolivia) is situated towards the western edge of the Bolivian high plateau, at an altitude of a little over 13,000 ft. The most interesting part of the district is that immediately surrounding the city of Corocoro, at a distance, by railway, of 65 miles from La Paz and 210 miles to the Chilean port of Arica on the Pacific Coast. The climate of the region is that of the semi-desert, dry and relatively cold, with big differences of temperature between day and night. The rainy season begins in December and ends in March. The cupriferous lodes of Corocoro have not attracted as much interest as the silver mines of Potosi but they have been known for a long time. In the precolonial period the Indians were using the charquis, or natural native copper sheets, to make small brass objects, and the beautiful pale green brochantite of the outcrops as a source of green pigments. During the colonial period, the oxidized ores of the outcrops were worked for copper, which was used by the mint at Potosi for making currency. The native copper ores were neglected because the Spanish miners were at a loss how to concentrate and smelt them. About 1830, work by rudimentary processes, which were improved little by little, was begun on the native copper ores. The total production of native copper in the following hundred years amounted to 100,000 tons. This native copper, which was remarkably pure, was much appreciated on the European markets before the introduction of electrolytic copper. It was useful for making special ornamental brass or bronze and the granular concentrates of native copper, called barrilla, containing 80 to 85 per cent copper were suitable for making copper sulfate by direct oxidation and subsequent leaching with sulfuric acid.

A proper consideration of this subject is not confined to the technical channels of production and metallurgy. It concerns an industry, and should cover economic aspects which are of material importance in any program of development. The discussion may logically be treated under three subdivisions, as follows: (1) manufacture, (2) characteristics related to quality of material; (3) adaptability and exploitation of product. Manufacture of Wrought Iron The manufacture of wrought iron is the most ancient art of the ferrous metal industry. The eighty years or less of existence of processes identified with our modern "Age of Steel" is a relatively brief interval compared with the several thousand years associated with the production of wrought iron by man. From the primitive early methods of production, manufacture for many centuries followed the line of direct reduction. There were developments as experience was gained through the years; but man's needs for a strong, ductile, forgeable product were met by reducing the ore to metallic iron in a single-stage operation. Following the development several centuries ago of what has become our modern blast-furnace operation, manufacture of wrought iron was gradually transformed into a two-stage method of first producing cast iron and then refining this to the desired degree of forgeability; the forerunner in principle of today's scheme of manufacture of steel. The product retained the essential characteristics of highly refined base metal with iron-silicate slag incorporation, which were associated with the material resulting from direct reduction methods. The use of small substations for the supplying of 275-volt energy to the locomotive and cutting machines in coal mines is a well-established practice. A few years ago, when labor costs were lower, these substations were located as near to the load as possible, and an operator was provided for each station. This practice has now become so expensive that substations are being located with reference to other mining machinery, such as hoists or pumps, so that one operator can look after both. Sometimes the substation is operated by one whose duties make him traverse quite a large area. In such cases the interruption of alternating-current supply may produce a long interruption in the direct current, as the station cannot resume service until this man reaches it. Such interruptions interfere seriously with production and may easily counterbalance the supposed saving gained by such operating methods. The grouping of substations for convenience in operating may also result in excessive copper loss and consequently poor trolley voltage, with its attendant evils of low locomotive speeds and increased locomotive motor maintenance. The speed of the coal-cutting machines will also be reduced. By relieving the substation of its burden of the operating labor cost, the most economical location, from an electrical standpoint, may be chosen. The matter of machine insurance should also be considered. If an attendant is caring for several kinds of equipment, he cannot watch the machine continually for signs of trouble; therefore, continued overload, phase failure, low alternating-current voltage, bearing trouble, etc. may result. Some partly automatic equipments have been installed; these have protection against low voltage, reverse current, and bearing trouble and are provided with automatic reclosing circuit breakers. This is a step in the right direction but it does not go far enough to give first-class machine insurance. The saving in maintenance costs is often the smallest item, when considering the automatic substation as machine insurance. The data contained in this paper were collected during the course of an investigation which covered 15 representative coal mines in six coalmining states. The purpose of the investigation was to determine by atmospheric sampling how much dust was raised into the air during the various operations of coal mining, such as undercutting with machines, loading coal by hand and transporting it from the working face to the surface. The data thus obtained were considered from two angles; namely, the possible physiological effect of inhalation and the explosion hazard of the dust. No attempt will be made to discuss the former factor in this paper. ConDitions of Mining The mines in which this investigation was conducted were considered representative, and it is believed that the results obtained will suffice for the average dustiness encountered in most coal mines. All of the coal mined was bituminous, from beds 30 to 120 in. thick. Only the ordinary room-and-pillar system of mining was employed. Daily production ranged from approximately 700 to 1500 tons and the men employed from 150 to 450. Coal was undercut by shortwall mining machines in all mines, with the exception of one in which pick mining was employed. Loading at the face wets done by miners; none of the mines used mechanical loaders. Electric drills, both for brushing roof and for shooting coal were commonly used, although some roof work was done with jack-hammers and a little of both with augers. Coal was hauled by motor, mule, or rope power in end-gate cars with capacities ranging from 1800 to 3600lb. With few exceptions, coal was won at the face by dry methods, that is to say, no water was employed for wetting down the dust either during undercutting, loading or transportation. Electrolytic zinc produced from sulfate solution and with pure lead anodes is always contaminated with a small and varying percentage of lead. The purpose of this investigation is to determine the characteristics of several lead alloys and their influence on the products of electrolysis and power consumption. The study of alloyed anodes has been a matter of interest for some years. Tainton, Taylor and Ehrlinger prepared a highly interesting paper' on this subject a year ago, in which the effects of silver-lead and some ternary alloys of lead-silver-tin were described, and the presentation of any paper on insoluble anodes will owe much to the inspirational results achieved by Dr. Colin G. Fink and Li Chi Pan in their work on insoluble anodes for the electrolysis of brine,2 and to other published papers by Dr. Fink and his coworkers embracing the development of the copper-silicon-manganese anode for the production of electrolytic copper and the general subject of anode development. The present paper describes a study of various combinations of 10 metals. The general plan of the work provides for the fabrication of the alloyed anode, its adequate conditioning by preparatory electrolytic operation, the production of cathode zinc and its analysis, the determination of the anode polarization, and other features. A list of the anodes tested, showing composition and polarization at various current densities together with the lead assay of the cathode zinc, is shown in Table 1. Determination of Anode Polarization In the determination of anode polarization under operating conditions it is essential that the anode area used be restricted to the side facing the cathode, in order that these measurements may be referred to a definite current per unit of area. Crude petroleum produced in the Texas Panhandle oil field is both an asphalt and a paraffin-base oil and is further characterized by being a high-gravity crude with an extremely high cold test,. AT Dominion Steel & Coal Corp. it has long been recognized that continued mechanization of mine operations is necessary in the Pictou, Cumberland, and Sidney coal fields of Nova Scotia. The varied physical conditions in these fields call for special consideration of individual cases before planning is finalized. Because standard equipment cannot be procured which would operate successfully, many experiments have been necessary over the years to keep pace with the progress made in other countries. There are two mines, producing 2000 tpd, located in the Pictou coal field. The field is badly distorted and crossed by many faults. Seams are highly inclined and irregular and vary in thickness from 5 to 40 ft. Entries are difficult to maintain because of squeezing of the coal. ribs and movement of the roof and pavement. Output from the three operating mines in the Cumberland field is 3000 tpd. The field is highly inclined, inclination varying from 12° to 32°. Overlying beds consist of shales and massive sandstone lenses of extreme toughness and are responsible for bumps when the stresses are relieved by extraction. At greatest depth these are among the deepest coal workings in the world. Depth of cover ranges from 2300 to 4000 ft. This prohibits room-and-pillar working and necessitates longwall operation. Working of contiguous seams concurrently to maintain output increases the already difficult conditions. The Sydney field, with a frontage of about 30 miles, is the most important of the Nova Scotia coal fields. With the exception of one small area it is now wholly submarine. Output is approximately 21,000 tpd. Seams are 21/2 to 8 ft thick, and cover in the areas varies from 600 to 2300 ft, with an average of 1500 ft from sea bottom to the top of the seam. The seams dip in a seaward direction, pitches ranging from 6" to 4.0". The shoreline is the last place of entry to the seams and distance from the bank to the working faces is generally over 3½ miles, in some cases as much as 6½ miles. Ventilation is a problem and requires the construction of large permanent airways. Getting and Loading Coal: In 1925, in view of heavy pressures exerted by thickness of cover overlying the seams, roadways and pillars of the room-and-pillar system being worked began to break up and coal was lost. It was decided that a change in the method of extraction in areas with heavy cover was necessary, and experiments were made with many short walls and longwalls varying between 90 and 250 ft. Trial and error proved that the best operating length was between 400 and 500 ft, delivering all coal to the dip, with roadways to the face following a level course. The change-over was gradual, and the technique of roof control developed with the system, so that falls to the face are now very infrequent. An advantage of longwall mining is that it yields 95 pct extraction, especially important in coal seams of high quality or in seams where faults or disturbances restrict the workable areas. This percentage of extraction is based on the fact that the longwall advancing system takes development faces where pitch permits instead of driving headings and leaving roadway pillars. This system yields high tonnage during development and limits loss in extraction to duff left during operations. Accompanying disadvantages, on the other hand, are the heavy construction cost of main roadways and the necessity of driving all new flank face roadways through the gob. If the main roadways are driven through the solid, and large enough pillars are left on each side for protection against flank face weights, then the width of solid coal is approximately 1700 ft. This represents 10.6 pct of the coal available, or 89.4 pct extraction of the whole. These pillars, however, are of such size that they provide a useful pillar drawing area as a final operation of the mine. It has been shown that hydrogen may be made to serve as a rapid and eflicient reducing agent for Cu, Ni, Co, and Fe sulfides if a scavenging agent for hydrogen sulfide is intimately mixed with the sulfide particles being reduced. Accelerated reduction kinetics are demonstrated for nickel sulfide. Copper, nickel, and cobalt sulfides, when treated at certain temperatures in a combined reducing agent-scavenging agent system, are converted to voluminous masses of fibrous metal product. Studies have been carried out to determine the conditions which lead, on the one hand, to irregular poly crystalline fibers and, on the other, to long single crystal filaments a few microns in diameter. A mechanism is proposed to account for the formation of single crystal filuments. The sulfide minerals of Cu, Ni, Co, and Fe are an important source of these metals yet there has been comparatively little scientific effort devoted towards understanding reduction mechanisms of these minerals. This may be, in part, due to the fact that the most convenient reducing agents for carrying out such studies, viz., hydrogen and carbon, do not react appreciably with sulfides. We have found that the reaction of hydrogen with metal sulfides can be markedly accelerated by placing a scavenging agent for hydrogen sulfide in close proximity to the metal sulfide. A brief series of experiments demonstrating relative reduction rates is reported in this paper to illustrate the effect. With the reduction process thus accelerated we have observed an unusual type of reduction behavior on some of the sulfides investigated. Under certain conditions the metallic product of the reduction reaction takes the form of filaments growing outward from the sulfide particles. The present paper deals largely with efforts to classify the various types of growth forms observed. This study has shown that filamentary growths from sulfides take a much greater variety of forms than has heretofore been reported by Ercker,1 Hardy,2 and Nabarro and Jackson3 in their reviews of metallic growths from copper and silver sulfides. THERMODYNAMIC CONSIDERATIONS The thermodynamics for hydrogen reduction of metal sulfides is quite unfavorable. For the sulfides considered here equilibrium constants typically range from 10-3 to 10-5. These low equilibrium constants impose severe kinetic limitations on reduction since hydrogen sulfide must be transported out of the system at concentrations of only a few hundred ppm. Unless extremely high gas flow rates are employed the atmosphere surrounding any sulfide particle will always be essentially in equilibrium with the sulfide. If, however, one places an efficient scavenging agent for hydrogen sulfide in close proximity to the metal sulfide particles the concentration of H2S near the metal sulfide will be held to a very low value. This would permit the reduction reaction to proceed with little or no inhibition from a buildup of reaction product gas. It is well known that calcium oxide is capable of removing hydrogen sulfide from a hydrogen gas stream of low dew point.4 If a sufficient quantity of calcium oxide is mixed with the metal sulfide particles the reaction: CaO+H2S=CaS+ H2O [l] will substitute moisture in place of hydrogen sulfide in the gas stream and this will not affect, in a direct manner, the reaction: MeS +H2=Me + H2S [2] A convenient method of considering the thermodynamics of the combined reducing agent-scavenging agent system is to consider the atmosphere when the partial pressure of hydrogen sulfide is the same over both the metal sulfide and the scavenging agent, i.e., pH2S (1) =pH2S (2). As a consequence: pH2O (1) pH2(2) =K1K2 The chemical driving force for reduction will depend inversely upon the moisture content of the gas and will be 0 when, in the system, pH2O = pH2.K1K2. Table I lists values of the equilibrium constants for reduction and H2S scavenging reactions for a number of sulfides at several temperatures. Data are taken from Rosenqvist4,5 and Kelly.6 The equilibrium constant products calculated from this data show that the limiting level of gaseous reaction product has been increased by a factor of 10' to l04 as a result of substituting a reducing agent-scavenging agent system for a simple reducing agent system. One possible side effect which must be considered is the possibility that the moisture evolved in the scavenging reaction might cause the atmosphere in the system to be sufficiently oxidizing to favor the formation of oxide rather than metal. This possibility was examined by comparing the equilibrium constant products listed in Table I with equilibrium constants for hydrogen reduction of the respective metal oxides. It was found that for copper, nickel, and cobalt the combined reduction-scavenging reactions could not develop a sufficiently high oxidizing potential in the

Safety First is a popular motto—most mining companies have adopted it. It is probable, however, that in the majority of cases it is only a motto and gets no further than the office stationery or the bulletin board at the mine's entrance. In but few industries is there employed a greater diversity of machinery and mechanical devices than in coal mining. The list ranges all the tray from mechanical stokers to wood-working machinery and undercutters. Many of these devices, particularly those employed in wood working, are extremely dangerous. In 1913,23 per cent. of all fatalities occurring in coal mining in the U. S. were caused by machinery of some sort or other. Although the forms of accidents occurring with mining machinery are legion, they generally arise from one or more of five causes: (a) Falls from ladders, platforms, etc.; (b) coming in contact with moving machines or parts thereof; (c) electric shocks; (d) failure of some machine part; (e) mismanipulation of valves, levers, switches or other hand-operated controlling devices. The steps which may be taken to prevent accidents from the above causes are almost as numerous as the accidents themselves. There is, and can be, no panacea for all mishaps, nor for any one class of accidents. There is no mathematical or other formula that will bring immunity under any set of conditions. Common sense is the only guide. The remedy for the first-named class of accidents is simple and generally effective—namely, make the staging, ladder, platform, or other support, abundantly strong to carry any possible weight that it may be called upon to bear; provide ample railings on platforms or runways, and non-slipping feet on movable ladders. Coming in contact with moving machine parts is one of the greatest dangers met with in the operation and maintenance of mining machinery. Unfortunately, machine manufacturers have not as a class adopted the idea of thoroughly protecting and incasing the dangerous parts of their product. No one has, or should have, a better or more thorough knowledge of what the dangerous parts or elements of a machine may be than its builder. In evaluating fracture treatments, the need to answer such questions as "What zone or zones were actually treated?" and "What was the vertical extent of the treatment" is necessary, since determining effectiveness of the fracture treatwrent depends on knowledge of the reservoir portions stimulated and the vertical extent of the fracture system or systems. Injection of hot or cold fluids during fracturing operations will transfer heat to the surrounding formations and fracture faces mainly by heat conduction. Once injection ceases, temperature anomalies will develop opposite the zone fractured because the rate of temperature decay is less than that opposite zones heated or cooled by flow inside the wellbore or along the cement sheath. Thus, temperature surveys can he used to determine where fractures were generated outside the wellbore and to reasonahly estimate the vertical extent of the fractrires. This technique has been used successfully to evaluate over 344 fracture treatments at depths ranging from 1,500 to 15,700 ft. Examples of actual temperature surveys are presented to show how this method of fracture treatment evaluation can be used effectively and beneficially. INTRODUCTION Stimulation of producing or injection wells by fracturing is commonplace in the industry today. In evaluating these treatments, two basic questions which arise are "What zone or zones were actually stimulated?" and "What was the vertical extent of the treatment?". Knowledge of the reservoir portions stimulated and vertical extent of the fracture system or systems is vital to effect efficient and economical well completions and to assure maximum recovery from reservoirs. Not all fracture treatments are successful and many times the desired or anticipated results are not achieved. When this occurs, it is in most cases the engineer's job to determine why. The answer to this problem forms the primary basis for deciding whether to spend more money for development drilling and/or completion attempts or to forego additional expenditures to improve the particular zone. Also, knowledge of the reservoir portion actually stimulated is invaluable in planning future workovers. This is especially true in wells producing from reservoirs containing multiple porosity stringers or zones. For various reasons, all zones within a reservoir may not be perforated on initial completion with the thought of developing remaining zones through future workover operations. Because particular zones are perforated and fracturing fluid pumped down the wellbore, it cannot be assumed that all perforated zones are stimulated, and in turn drained. Occasionally, unperforated zones which are planned for future development are actually stimulated on initial completion. eliminating the need for future recompletion attempts or all zones perforated initially are not stimulated, thus requiring additional completion work to insure that these zones are adequately drained. In most cases, it is costly. if not impossible, to determine with assurance why a fracture treatment is unsuccessful after the job has been completed and the results tested. Further, unpredictable upper and lower fracture barriers. as well as possible borehole communications (cement channels), do not permit it to be taken for granted that the formation opposite the perforations is the only zone receiving the fracture treatment. Thus. evaluation of fracture treatments is necessary for efficient and prudent well completion practices and should be done simultaneously with the fracture job. Several methods have been used to locate fractured zones, all of which are based on detection of radioactive tracer materials added to either the fracturing fluid or the propping agent. These methods have been helpful in increasing knowledge of fracturing operations; however, they are seriously limited because of cost and inability to detect accurately radioactive tracer material more than a few inches away from the borehole. To develop a better diagnostic tool to pinpoint which zone or zones had actually been fractured, temperature surveys were run after fracturing with heated and cooled fluids. Significant temperature anomalies were found to exist opposite zones suspected of receiving the fracture treatment. From the analysis and examples to be shown, it can be seen that temperature surveys run in a stabilized wellbore several hours after a fracture treatment using hot or cold fluid will yield temperature anomalies which show the actual reservoir portion stimulated, the vertical extent of the fracture system or systems and a qualitative indication of the portion of fracture-fluid volume entering a given depth interval. The experience and illustrations used in this paper are based on evaluation of over 344 fracture treatments during the past three years using this diagnostic tool at depths ranging from 1.500 to 15,700 ft and fracture volumes ranging from 2.000 to 110.000 gal. Based on analyses of these temperature surveys, analyses of fracture gradients and evaluation of several open-hole packer impressions in the West Texas area,' vertical fracturing is the predominant mechanism and horizontal fractures occurred frequently, if at all.

The sudden death of Dr. Drown, on Nov. 17, 1904, brought to multitudes the pang of personal loss. Of all those who, as students at Lafayette College, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Lehigh University, were brought under his influence, not one can have forgotten him, and all will now acknowledge, with an unfading gratitude, what they owe in professional equipment to his wise, clear, skillful guidance, and in character to his sympathetic, stimulating personality. Outside of this wide circle, the experts of both hemispheres will lament the departure of one who, in his department of scientific investigation, both knew what work was needed, arid how to do it so that it needed not to be done again. The older members of the Amierican Institute of Mining Engineers will remember with gratitude the part he took, as Secretary from 1873 to 1884, in promoting the interest of that organization, and in shaping the plan and policy which it has followed with such noteworthy success. And, in addition to all these (though partly included among them), there are a host of friends, who can scarcely think of the public loss by reason of their own. Thomas Messenger Drown was born March 19,1842, at Philadelphia, Pa. His parents were natives of New England; and he was the youngest of their three sons. There are few natural monopolies comparable with the nitrate industry. Perhaps the only other one is, curiously enough, also an essentia1 fertilizer material, viz., potash, of which the Germans have heretofore held practically a monopoly due to the existence in their territory of the most important known deposits of potash salts. And although nitrates in minute amounts are found in many desert regions, the only deposits capable of being worked commercially exist in Chile. Combined nitrogen in the oxidized form is an essential for plant life. Nature provides it mainly through the agency of nitrogen-fixing bacteria. But where lands are cropped artificially this supply is too small, and gradually the nitrogen supply becomes exhausted. In order to continue farming, it is necessary to furnish a supply of nitrogenous plant food, and this is done by putting on various substances containing combined nitrogen. These consist of various animal wastes, ammonium sulphate, the ammonia of which is obtained in the destructive distillation of coal, and Chile saltpeter. The latter is immediately available as a plant food, the nitrogen being in the required form. The other substances must oxidize before they are available. Resides its use as a fertilizer, Chile saltpeter is the source from which the bulk of the nitric acid of commerce is derived. The use of nitric acid in the manufacture of almost all modern explosives is, of course, well known. Importance of the Nitrate Industry Chilean nitrate, the existence of which was first mentioned in 1809, is said to have been first exported in 1830. Only a few thousand tons per annum were exported for some years, but the amount gradually increased until, in 1879, when the Chile-Peruvian war began, the export amounted to about 300,000 tons. This nitrate was largely produced from the Province of Tarapaca, until then, Peruvian territory. By the terms of peace with Peru in 1884, this province, as well as Tacna, became Chilean. The Bolivian Province of Antofagasta was also acquired as a result of this war, and thus Chile, with the deposits in her own territory, acquired control of the whole supply of nitrate. There is a difference of opinion among engineers on the subject of depreciation in general, and still more on its application to any given case The committee which was appointed by the American Society of Civil Engineers to make a report on Valuation of Public Utilities, states "There is no subject connected with valuation about which there are more diverse views than those relating to depreciation;" and in the discussion which took place upon the presentation of the preliminary report of this committee in January, 1914, that part of the report dealing with depreciation called forth more discussion than any other. From this discussion it was evident that the word "depreciation" was not always used in the same sense, so it is quite important that some definition be adopted. As this paper relates to the proper method of treating depreciation by corporations or individuals operating oil properties, both of which must make a return of annual net income to the government in connection with the income tax, it will be in order to adopt the definition of the Internal Revenue Bureau. Under date of Mar. 29, 1910, the Commissioner of Internal Revenue of the Treasury Department stated "Deduction on account of depreciation of property must be based on lifetime of property, its cost, value and use." Again, on Form 1035, "Return of Annual Net Income" for miscellaneous corporations (Section 2, Act of Congress approved Oct. 3, 1913), a deduction from gross income is allowed for "Total amount of depreciation for the year." This item is defined more particularly as follows: "The amount claimed under Item No. 5 (b) for depreciation should be such an amount as measures the loss which the corporation actually sustains during the year in the value of buildings, machinery, and such other property as is subject to depreciation on account of wear and tear, exhaustion, or obsolescence. The amount taken credit for on this account in order to be allowable should be so entered on the books as to constitute a liability against the assets of the corporation. The amount claimed under this item should not cover losses in the value of stocks and bonds. Decrease in the book value of securities owned, so far as such decrease represents a decline in the actual value of such securities, should be deducted under item 5 (a) of the return. In this research the possibility of pelletizing high grade fluorsoar fines or flotation concentrates with the use of calcined colemanite as binder is investigated, and the room temperature and elevated temperature strengths of these pellets are compared with those of pellets which are obtained by using bentonite as binder. Pellets of 10-12 mm. size and having 10% calcined colemanite showed a much higher room temperature strength than those containing 5% benonite, both being endurated at 1000°C for 15 minutes. However, when the same batch of pellets were tested at elevated temperatures of 250º to 500°C, bentonite gave better results. X-ray tests showed that in the pellets endurated at 1000°C for 15 minutes the original crystal structure of fluorite mineral is preserved.
