Corrosion studies in laboratory ball mills and grinding environment simulations produce corrision rates and total metal removal rates much lower than those recorded in operating production ball mills. The corrosion component of ball metal loss in many mills probably represents less than 10% of the total loss, judging from AMAX experience and recent US Bureau of Mines (USBM) tests. Such small absolute losses are consistent with ball metal loss measured in production ball mill marked ball wear tests to determine effects of corrosion and abrasion resisting properties of alloys in operating mills. These indicate that metal hardness and microstructure determine relative metal loss rates of a given situation. The combination of ore characteristics and grinding process dynamics determine metal loss severity. Alloying for corrosion resistance and modification of the milling corrosion environment yield relatively small metal loss reductions. Alloying and heat treatment to produce high hardness and microstructures of high carbon martensite and, for cast irons M7C3 carbides, produces the lowest metal losses in typical wet grinding applications.

The Mascot mines of the American Zinc Co. of Tennessee are situated in the Holston River valley, in Knox County, Tennessee, about 13 miles (20.9 km.) east of the city of Knoxville, and form a property of three operating shafts and one open pit. A second open pit is located at Jefferson City about 16 miles (25.8 km.) east of the Mascot mines. Geology Topography.—The principal topographical features of the region within which the zinc deposits occur is a series of parallel northeast and southwest ridges which reach altitudes of 200 to 400 ft. (61 to 122 m.) above the valley. These ridges are formed of resistant formation such as sandstone, quartzites, etc., while the valleys are occupied principally by limestone, including Knox dolomite, and by shale and other formations subject to quick erosion. The Holston River valley is wide and open with a rolling surface. Sink holes are common to the limestone portion, the general aspect of the valley being that of well-rounded hills with low intervening valleys superimposed upon which is a characteristic sink-hole topography. General Geology.—According to Keith, the rock formation of the area extends from the lower Cambrian into the Silurian. The region has undergone severe deformation with hcavy faulting, the underlying Cambrian having been brought to the surface by a series of low angle thrust faults, the strike of the faults and formations paralleling the general northeast and southwest direction of the topography and dipping at varying angles to the southeast. In general, the Cambrian quartzites, sandstone, etc., occupy the ridges while the Cambro-Si urian dolomites, limestone and shales occur principally in the valleys. Of the latter, the Knox dolomite is of particular interest to this paper in that it is the ore carrier in the Mascot area. If asked whether limestone production was a mining problem I would not hesitate to answer emphatically in the affirmative. The question, "When is a quarry a mine?" is familiar. The immediate mental picture induced by the thought of limestone production is that of an open quarry. All are familiar with the open pit in the iron-producing districts of Minnesota and Michigan and the open cuts of the so-called "porphyry" coppers of the West. If these are mines, they differ little from limestone quarries in general mode of operation; if quarries, why do they need the attention of mining engineers? During 1923, the United States produced in round numbers 70,000,000 tons of iron ore. The limestone production of the United States for the same period was something over 100,000,000 tons. In tons, it about equals the oil production of the United States. The uses of limestone are legion. A paper read by a prominent engineer of Chicago, at the meeting of the National Crushed Stone Association held last February in St. Louis says: "There is no industry in the United States today that is more basic in its operation or by itself controls more industries. There is hardly a chemical operation, hardly a metallurgical operation or building operation that a crushed-stone man does not control if he will jump in and make the full utilization of it." Some of the many uses are for road metal, concrete, railway ballast, building stone: riprap, and rubble, the manufacture of iron and steel, alkalies, calcium carbide, magnesia, carbolic and carbonic acids, asphalt filler, mineral wool, poultry grit, sulfuric acid, phosphates, nitrates, soap, baking powder, the purification of copper and prevention of coal-mine explosions, to say nothing of the quantities used in the making of lime and cement. It has been said that without iron we would revert to the Stone Age; how much iron would we have without limestone? From the point of view of the mining engineer, using the term in its broad sense to include geologists and metallurgists, the production of limestone is important because of its occurrence, volume, commercial importance, and the problems presented by its recovery and treatment.

Among the parameters to be considered in the continuous search for new base-metal deposits, there often is a stratigraphic controlling factor that seems instrumental in the localization of ore. In British Columbia, for instance, the Upper Triassic as well as Lower Jurassic volcanics mixed with sediments are a useful indication in the search for copper while, in some parts of Australia, rhyolite bodies seem to be the favorable indicator, and this always within the geosynclinal environment. In Arizona, this stratigraphic factor becomes highly significant and it will be shown here that a large number of ore deposits are to be located around the flanks of ancient calcareous basins or depressions, preferentially corresponding to a certain optimum thickness as revealed by isopachs. The Martin limestone, of Devonian age, is already known for its basal O'Carroll bed which coincides with mineralization at places, and this is a relatively minor control. However, several limestone basins outlined by isopachs are in reality of greater importance as they localize mining districts. Indeed, most mines are found to coincide with a specific thickness of limestone while occurring simultaneously close to major, regional fracture intersections. The regional fractures in question were interpolated and extrapolated from known, important fault expressions, integrating quite well with the existing geology and further confirmed by minor criteria such as contacts, igneous plugs, axes of elongation of batholiths, dikes, etc. Although elements of subjectivity remain, this grid of fractures can be used quite successfully as a working hypothesis in the search for ore. In the theoretical study of metallurgical reactions, it is necessary to make certain assumptions concerning the nature of metal-gas systems. The assumption usually made is that the reaction in such systems takes place predominantly with gas that is in "solution" and that the amount of solution follows the rules which have been developed for aqueous solutions; namely, Henry's law. The purpose of this paper is to inquire whether these assumptions are the best ones that present knowledge of gas-metal systems permits us to make. In the first part the extent to which a gas will dissolve in a metal and still follow Henry's law is considered. The conclusion is believed justified that the number of molecules of gas that can dissolve in a metal and have the system follow Henry's law must be small indeed. It is therefore improbable that the first assumption concerning the predominance of these dissolved molecules in reaction is correct. It is suggested that some improvement in the correlation of the probabilities with the assumptions made in the mass law equations would be made by the use of the dp law of Sieverts in place of Henry's law. However, the amount of gas that may be held in a metal so that it follows either Henry's or Sieverts' law is considerably outweighed in most metallurgical reactions by that held in gas-metal systems of entirely different structures and concerning which little experimental evidence is available. Some speculation concerning the nature of these is offered. The conclusion is that attention should be given to the determining of the nature of gas-metal systems and that the really fruitful application of the mass law and its connected calculations will have to await a more complete knowledge of these systems than we now possess. Uranium deposits in the Spokane Indian Reservation, as well as those around Mt. Spokane, are essentially low grade, much of the ore containing less than 0.2 pct U3O8. The Mining Experiment Station of the Division of Industrial Research, State College of Washington, has been engaged in intensive research on the amenability of these low grade ores to froth flotation. The results: successful flotation of autinite, chief mineral constituent. At the outset of this work the goal was a concentrate of 1 pct U3O8 with a 90 pct recovery from ores containing less than 0.2 pct U3O8. Most of the work has been done on argillite ore from the Midnight mine on the Spokane Indian Reservation. The goal has not been attained using this ore, but samples of the granite ore from Mt. Spokane yielded successful results. For example, a concentrate containing 11.2 pcl U3O8 was produced from a Mt. Spokane high grade ore containing 1.27 pct U3O8 with a recovery of 97.8 pct. Another Mt. Spokane ore yielded a concentrate of 5.0 pct U3O8 from an ore containing 0.13 pct U3O8. with a recovery of 85 pct. This same ore gave a recovery of 93.5 pct when the grade of concentrate was reduced to 2.0 pct. It has been concluded that a successful method for floating autunite has been developed and that the mediocre results from the Midnight argillite ore are probably caused by the presence of some other uranium mineral or minerals less amenable to these reagents. The experimenters tested a third type of Washington ore, found on the Northwest Uranium Mines Inc. property on the Spokane Indian Reservation. This is a conglomerate of pebbles and small boulders of partially decomposed granite and is shot through with autunite. Its characteristics lie between those of the Midnight ore and the granite ore from the Spokane district. It responds better than the ore from Midnight but not as well as that from Mt. Spokane. As the fatty acids are the only type of collectors showing promise, investigation has been concerned with these acids and the optimum conditions for their use. The first method for treating the argillite ore from the Spokane Indian Reservation made use of Cyanamid's R-708 as a collector, a tall oil product described as a substitute for oleic acid. Although the investigators proved that R-708 is a collector for autunite when mixtures of autunite and silica sand are used, results on the ore were mediocre. Tests of other fatty acids revealed that the solid fatty acids of the saturated series are collectors for autunite and that their collecting power increases with the length of the carbon chain. The even carbon members of the whole series were tested from the 10 carbon acid (capric) to the 22 carbon acid (be-henic). The least expensive collector, stearic acid (18 carbon), proved to be a good one, so this was used in most of the tests. In first attempts with stearic acid, the collector was dissolved in various hydrocarbons and the solutions were added to the flotation cell. Cyclohexane, gasoline, fuel oil, kerosene, and other solvents were tried. Small amounts of high grade concentrates could be brought up, but recoveries were low. Finally emulsions of stearic acid were tried. It was discovered that stearic acid alone has little collecting power except when conditioning is carried out at high temperature. When hydrocarbon solvents were also present, it proved to be an excellent collector. An example of one emulsion that proved satisfactory for some ores is given as follows: 1 part stearic acid by weight, 1 part sodium oleate by weight, 1.2 parts kerosene by weight, 100 parts water. In some successful tests part of the stearic acid was replaced by oleic acid. The emulsions were made by agitating the stearic acid and sodium oleate together with hot water, then adding the kerosene and agitating while cooling. In the five tests reported in Table 1, 650 g of ore were ground with 650 cc water in a laboratory rod mill. The pulp was filtered to eliminate excess water and the ground ore transferred to a stainless steel beaker for conditioning at high pulp density. In most of the tests sodium hydroxide was added to the conditioner during agitation, then the collector emulsion, and finally the sodium silicate. The amount of alkali was adjusted to give a pH of 8.5 to 9.0 in the flotation cell. After conditioning the pulp was transferred to a laboratory flotation cell and the test completed in a normal manner. It is interesting to note that a deposit of high grade concentrate forms on the conditioning agitator and in the conditioning vessel, and at times on the agitator of the flotation cell itself. A few grams of concentrate running as high as 4 pct U3O8 were recovered from the conditioner when Midnight ore containing less than 0.2 pct U3O8 was treated. We of the employer class represent labor in the social organization and in industry just as truly as do those who labor only with their hands, and, because our labor is chiefly with our brains, the duty is all the more imposed upon us to use those gifts in which we excel in helping steer a clear course through the turbulent waters in which we are now enmeshed. Only their selfish engrossment in the daily tasks they were employed to perform could possibly have permitted the great majority of the intelligent and industrious German people to become terrorized by a handful of the idle, the vicious, and the criminal, whom the elections to the National Assembly showed to be in as pitiful a minority as they are in Russia, in this, and in other countries. It is the leisure unemployment of the I.W.W.'s, the Bolsheviki, and the Sparticans that has enabled them to devote their whole time to a concerted and aggressive struggle against the great majority of those of the world's workers who are unorganized, and who are therefore even in opposition one to the other. In union there is strength, and this was never better illustrated than by these conditions. The great fallacy of our previous attitude toward social and industrial problems has been the belief that labor, by which we commonly mean organized or physical labor, is something antagonistic to and having a different object in life from that great body of unorganized laborers who work with their brains. Our difficulty has been our lack of will or opportunity to think. The hurry of our daily struggle to earn our livelihood under the nerve-racking pressure of modern civilization has left us no opportunity for quiet thought and study. The physical laborer, and above all the laborer in the mines, on the other hand, has all his hours of toil in which to think over, in all their varied aspects, those problems that concern his immediate, personal well-being. As a result he has arrived at perhaps a more true appreciation of the facts of life in their relation to social and industrial conditions than we. Have we not too readily adopted the view that, as the managers of industry under the direction of capital, it has been our duty to think and act in opposition to labor, rather than to realize that we also are laborers, have like aspirations, and should participate in a free and aggressive solution of these problems rather than leave their solution

Thin films of tungsten 077 n-type germanium, silicon, and gallium arsenide were obtained by reacting tungsten hexafluoride with the semiconductor surface in an argom atmosplrere at temperatures between 325° and 400° C. Capacity-voltage, current-iloltage, and photoelectric measurements were used to investigate the characteristics of the tungsten -semiconductor diodes thus Produced. The junctions are shown to he very close to ideal Schottky barlp/ers with barrier heights measured with respect to the Fermi energy of 0.18, 0.65, and 0.78 1.1 jar W-Ge, W-Si, and W-GaAs, respectively. The electrical properties of the W-Si interface show no deterioration when heated to 1000°C in dry forming gas for 5 min. A theoretical value of the Richardson constant, A, appropriate to the semiconductor-hand structure has been used in evaluating the current-voltage characteristics. ThE W-Si surface-barrier diode was initially proposed for investigation because the eutectic temperature with silicon (1400°C) is much higher than that in the Si-Au system 1370°C).1 This would permit more flexibility in heat treatment and possibly provide greater reliability at elevated temperatures. The lower work function of tungsten (4.54 ev)2 compared with that of gold (4.78 ev)3 also suggested that a lower barrier height would be obtained with tungsten and hence a lower forward bias and lower minority carrier injection ratio for a given current density. The investigation was extended to include the characterization of W-Ge md W-GaAs surface-barrier diodes. The tungsten films have been produced by reacting WF6 with germanium, silicon, and GaAs surfaces in an argon atmosphere at temperatures from 300° to 500°C.4 This process is a very satisfactory alternative to the relatively difficult process of evaporating tungsten films in vacuo. To ensure an adequate electrical characterization of the tungsten-semiconductor interface, three types of barrier-height measurements have been performed. The mutually consistent results obtained lead to the conclusion that the tungsten-semiconductor junctions are indeed of the Schottky type. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The apparatus used for producing tungsten films is shown schematically in Fig. 1. It consists of an argon carrier gas line to which metered amounts of tungsten hexafluoride can be rapidly added. The mixture passes through a heated reaction tube containing the semiconductor slices and is exhausted to a hood. The argon is purified by passage through a 6-in. column of titanium turnings maintained at 800°C. The tungsten hexafluoride dispensing arrangement was designed by V. C. Garbarini and W. R. Bracht.4 A measured amount of liquid tungsten hexafluoride is injected into the argon stream and vaporizes. The mixture passes through a sodium fluoride absorption cell to remove traces of hydrogen fluoride, then into the nickel reaction tube. The tube is 12 in. long with an inside diameter of 1/2 in. The center section is heated by a furnace of the self-supporting wire-filament type. It was chosen for its rapid heatup and cooling. The wall thickness is 10 mils except for a 3-in. hot zone which is 30 mils thick to reduce thermal gradients along the length. The samples to be coated are placed on a sapphire plate and centered in this section. The tungsten is deposited with the following sequential steps: the loaded reaction tube is flushed with argon at a rate of 500 cu cm per min and heated to 370°C. Then 0.45 g of liquid tungsten hexafluoride is injected into the argon stream. The samples are held at this temperature for 2 min. The tube and samples are then cooled to room temperature and the samples removed. Tungsten films were grown on (111) faces of silicon and germanium polished with Linde A abrasive and lightly etched with HF-HNO3. The GaAs surfaces were (100) faces chemically polished with a H2SO4-H2O2 solution. The films have typical sheet resistances of 0.2, 8, and 15 52/0 when grown on germanium, silicon, and GaAs, respectively. A.. S. DWIGHT, New York, N. Y.-Mr. Henrich's paper is rather inconclusive as to the role that alumina really plays in slags. He gives a number of interesting instances of high alumina, with conclusions that he draws from the analyses, in the light of what he knows of the accompanying conditions, but the information given is hardly sufficient to permit intelligent criticism of these conclusions, for it is well known that the slag composition is not the only factor that can produce some of the furnace results favorable or disastrous, as the case may be, which he records. As a matter of fact, most metallurgists who have wrestled with this problem in connection with the smelting of lead and copper ores, usually arrived at some sort of a working hypothesis which met the local conditions fairly well, and then, being busy men, were inclined 'to leave the theoretical question very much as Mr: Henrich leaves it when he says: "A question with which I purpose dealing at some future time." It is unfortunate that in the Golden Age of the smelting industry in the West, when we were all dealing with large tonnages of complex ores, often containing large percentages of alumina in combination with other. refractory elements, the smelting companies were not generally equipped for research as they are today, and much experience that might have been,

INTRODUCTION THE history of copper metallurgy in Japan goes back into remote ages, of this there is abundant proof, and that the working of this metal is closely connected with the artistic development of this nation is evidenced by some of the glorious monuments which have been produced by these ancient metal workers. The traveler sees to-clay in a perfect state of preservation bronze statues 150 ft. high, and over, 300 ft. in width, and 170 ft. in depth, delicately chased and beautifully marked, and when one reflects that some of them date back to the eighth century A. D., the question naturally suggests itself, how did these ancient metallurgists with their crude and primitive appliances accomplish this stupendous task? The bodies of these images are formed of bronze castings 10 to 12 in. thick, which were gradually built up and soldered together, but other pieces of magnitude, like the heads and other portions of the body are single castings. In many cases another method of construction must have been adopted. The walls of the molds were gradually built up and as the lower portion of the castings cooled, the walls were raised higher and higher and fresh metal must have been added, instead of constructing the whole mold first and then making the casting in one piece. There are still traces of substantial gilding visible on these statues, and how the pious Buddhist priests who were the constructors of them got the precious metal, is preserved in legendary tales.

Mechanical inclusion, electrophoretic deposition, and adsorption were studied as mechanisms for code-position of aluminas present in copper-plating electrolytes as an insoluble disperse phase. Mechanical inclusion was not a significant factor. That codeposi-tzon of aluminas by an electrophoretic mechanism was unlikely was substantiated by measurements of the potential of the aluminas. The alumina content of the deposits was studied as a function of the pH of the bath. These tests in conjunction with sedimentation studies demonstrated the absence of an isoelectric point for the alutninas over the pH range examined. Thiourea in the electrolyte (a substance known to be adsorbed on a copper cathode during electrodeposition) affected the amount of alumina in the electrodeposit. However, no adsorption of thiourea on aluminas in aqueous dispersions was detected. If it were possible to produce a dispersion-hardened alloy of copper and alumina by electrodeposition, an alloy possessing both strength and high conductivity at elevated temperatures might be anticipated. Investigation of the mechanism of codeposition of aluminas with copper was undertaken with the hope that knowledge of the mechanism would aid in the development of such an alloy. The word "codeposit" here does not necessarily imply an electrolytic phenomenon but rather that the materials codepositing, the various aluminas, are transported to and embedded in the electrodeposited copper by some means. Mechanical inclusion in electrodeposition implies a mechanism of codeposition which is wholly mechanical in nature; the only forces acting on a particle are gravity and contact forces. Such a particle is presumed to be electrically inert and incapable of any electrical interaction with electrodes in an electrolytic plating bath. Processes for matrices containing a codeposited phase by electrodeposition from a bath containing a disperse insoluble phase frequently state that code-position is caused by mechanical inclusion.10,2,12 If settling, i.e., gravity, be the controlling mechanism for codeposition of aluminas, then assumptions may be made that 1) the content of alumina in the electrodeposit should be enhanced by increasing the particle size, 2) the geometry of the system, that is, the disposition of the cathode surfaces relative to the di- rection of the falling particles, should affect the alumina content of the electrodeposit, 3) in geometrically identical systems the chemical composition of the electrolyte employed should exercise no effect on the alumina content of the deposit, that is, the alumina content should be the same in all cathode deposits irrespective of bath composition. A bent cathode19 evaluates the clarity of filter effluent in electroplating baths by comparing the roughness of the deposit on the vertical surface with that on the horizontal surface. Two difficulties are inherent in this technique: 1) the current density on the horizontal portion of the cathode would be substantially greater than that on the vertical surface; 2) should the deposit obtained be rough, projections on the vertical face could act as horizontal planes and vitiate the relationship between the vertical and horizontal surfaces. Bath composition should have no substantial effect on the alumina content of the deposit. Two different electrolytic baths were employed. They possessed variant specific conductances and substantially different pH ranges. The experimental tanks were rectangular Pyrex battery jars 6 in. wide by 3 1/4 in. long by 9 3/4 in. deep. The cathodes were stainless steel 316 sheet of 0.030 in. thickness, cut to 7.5 by 1.75 in. and bent at right angles to form an L-shaped cathode whose horizontal surfaces measured 1.75 by 3.0 in. All edges and vertical surfaces were masked with Scotch Elec-troplaters Tape No. 470. The anodes were electrolytic cathode copper 9 in. high by 2.25 in. wide by 0.5 in. thick. To eliminate inordinately high current densities on the projecting edge of the cathode, the anode was masked 1 in. above and below the projected line of intersection of the cathode with the anode. The exposed area of the anode was equal to that of the cathode, providing both with equal average current densities. The agitator in the cell was of Pyrex glass and positioned so its center line was equidistant from cathode and anode, and a plane passed horizontally through the center of the blade would be located equidistant from the bottom of the cathode and the bottom of the deposition tank. The assembled apparatus is depicted in Fig. 1. Hatched areas on anode and cathode represent the area of the electrodes wrapped with electroplaters tape. MATERIALS The chemicals were copper sulfate—CuSO4 • 5H2O— technical powder (Fisher Scientific Co.). Spectro-graphic analysis showed substantial freedom from antimony, arsenic, and iron. Traces of nickel were present.

OPERATORS of diamond drills have long been familiar with thread-like markings or riflings on cores but apparently have given but little serious thought to the conditions that are responsible for their production. The opinion generally held by those who have observed the phenomena is that the riflings are produced directly or indirectly by vibration, but so far as the writer is aware no systematic attempt has been made to demonstrate the fact. A careful search through the literature on diamond-drilling practice has been rewarded by only one reference to such markings of cores. J. N. Justice1 writes, "Of the peculiarities met with in the core, I will mention only one. The core from the "H" drill, at about 360 ft. came out rifled and pentagonal. The change from the circular to the pentagonal was sudden, and for 9 ft. this structure was maintained, when suddenly it returned to the circular. I have not been able to find any one who can explain the cause of this change of form. The drill men marveled at it and suggested vibration, six-stone bits, and several other hypotheses Which need not be mentioned." The writer became interested in the matter of core riflings some 10 years ago while in the Flat River lead region of Missouri, where many remarkable examples of "rifled" cores were observed and collected. Since that time similar phenomena have been observed in various localities throughout the United States and Canada, and samples have been gotten together illustrating a large number of variations in form. After a careful study had been made of the material at hand it seemed desirable that certain data should be obtained from the experience of others regarding the normal action of diamond drills in forming cores, portions of which are occasionally rifled, before an attempt was made to draw any conclusions as to their cause.

THE tin deposits of Cornwall appear to have been worked for at least 3000 years. Prior to the sixteenth century, the tin came exclusively from alluvial deposits. At that time, shallow pits or mines were started in the hill sections. Mining of copper seems to have begun at the same time, but does not appear to have been especially important until about 1700. From that time until the close of the nineteenth century, copper was of major importance. Lead, and to a lesser extent, other metals, such as antimony, iron and manganese, were produced in commercial quantities during the same period. With the opening of the eighteenth century carne increasing difficulties with water because of the increasing depth of the mines. Among the efforts made to overcome this difficulty was the construction of the "Great County Adit," begun in 1748, taking 20 years to complete, and with its branches having a length of 20 miles. Adits proved capable of handling-only a few of the water problems, and led to rapid adoption of the steam pumping engine in the latter part of the eighteenth century and the early part of the nineteenth. It was in this period that the Cornish pumping engine, still considered by Cornishmen to be the most satis-factory unit for handling large quantities of water, carne into existence. The development of a means of controlling the water made possible the opening up of a number of rich deposits where profitable work-ing was further assisted by numerous improvements in mining and milling machinery. During the middle of the past century, Cornwall, with an average yearly production of 10,000 tons of tin metal and an even slightly larger tonnage of copper, enjoyed a period of unprecedented prosperity. How-ever, the relatively high prices of both copper and tin served not only to encourage prospecting (and much speculation) in Cornwall, but also in other countries. The rapid development of copper mines in the United States, together with sudden impoverishment of the lodes with increasing depth in the greatest of the Cornish copper mines, brought the copper boom to an abrupt end, the production of copper at the close of the cen-tury being negligible in importance and being secured in large measure

THE work described in this paper was carried out under the sponsorship of the Foreign Economics Administration and in cooperation with the Departamento Nacionál da Produção Mineral, Rio de Janeiro. The project was undertaken to obtain complete data on the variations in washability of coal to be used for coke manufacture in the steel industry and to determine the economy of preliminary hand-sorting operations. The coal-producing industry of Brazil is in that pioneering stage in which operat¬ing practices and methods are just being developed. Increased wartime demand for fuel, coincident with a drastic curtailment of foreign supplies due to lack of shipping facilities, has put a tremendous pressure on the national industry to furnish more coal. Under this incentive, production facilities are being expanded and new methods of operation are being tested. Such changes are being developed both by improvement of existing methods that originated in the field and by adaptation and modification of methods introduced from the United States and Europe. These mining condi¬tions and mining practices in Brazil are typical of what the American mining engineer will find in many instances when he goes pioneering into the developing coal fields of the Southern Hemisphere. The producing coal fields of Brazil are all in the southern states of that country. The coal measures are in a band roughly paralleling the coast and extending in a generally southwesterly direction from northern São Paulo through the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul to near the Uruguayan border in the vicinity of Bajé. The accompanying map1 (Fig. I shows the general location of these fields and also the principal routes of movement of both national and imported coal in a late pre-war year (1940). THE desulphurizing of pig iron has been accomplished with a number of different additions. The oldest and still most commonly used agent is soda, the extensive use of which commenced about 1925, when it was used principally for cupola furnace iron. More recent experience' seems to show that better results can be obtained with sodium hydroxide. The well-known desulphurizing properties of lime have also been exploited in different technical processes. Another material with even more powerful effect is calcium carbide.' The desulphurizing ability of manganese, when added to the ladle in sufficient quantity, should also be mentioned in this connection. During recent years increasing attention has been paid to the desulphurizing properties of metallic magnesium." An addition of a suitable alloy of magnesium is now in use purely for the purpose of sulphur elimination. Of the desulphurizing agents mentioned, lime is by far the cheapest, provided that the reaction can be brought about rapidly and completely. Therefore, a method that makes full use of the desulphurizing ability of lime may be able to compete with other processes. A method developed at the Dom-narfvet Iron and Steel Works (Sweden) will be described, which enables pig iron to be rapidly desulphurized to very low sulphur contents by using a burnt lime powder. as the desulphurizing agent. Lime in Older Processes In cases where lime has been used for the desul-phurization of pig iron, it has generally not been used alone, but mixed with other substances such as fluorspar, to obtain the formation of a molten slag during the process. This method has been tried by Tigerschiold,' who treated the iron with a lime-fluorspar mixture, the stirring of the iron being brought about inductively with low frequency alternating current. Very good results were obtained. A process of this type has also been suggested by R. P. Heuer, U. S. A. The principles of this method, which has been tested in Great Britain by Newell. Lanener. and Parsons." re that a mixture of lime and fluoispar is added to the hot metal in the ladle, while a powerful stream of nitrogen gas is blown into the bath to produce the required intermixing. The results of the tests were unsatisfactory, however. A similar process has been developed at The Steel Co. of Canada, according to a statement by H. M. Griffith.' Here the tests were carried out in a carbon-lined ladle provided with carbon tuyeres in the side wall for blowing nitrogen into the bath. The addition consisted of about 20 lb of a mixture of burnt lime and fluorspar per ton of pig iron. Good results appear to have been achieved. The sulphur content of the pig iron is stated to have been reduced from 0.025 to 0.050 pct down to 0.006 pct. Various methods of desulphurizing pig iron have been tried using lime powder without fluxing material for fusing. Eichholz and Behrendt7 have experimented with blowing a powdered limeicoke mixture with air into the ladle. Their results were, however, not conclusive and the experiments do not appear to have been continued. Similar experiments have been carried out at Domnarfvet, using nitrogen instead of air in order to avoid oxidation. But these attempts were not particularly successful. It appears to be difficult to achieve the required agitation by this means. The strong cooling effect of the gas on the iron is also a serious drawback. A method in many respects similar to that tried at Domnarfvet was tried by Eulenberg and Krus at the end of the 1930's. Here again desulphurization was carried out with lime alone, brought into contact with the molten iron in a rotary furnace. The temperature was kept at the required level, 1400" to 1500°C, by the introduction of a pulverized coal burner in one end of the furnace. The speed of rotating was not given. A paper by Bading and Krus states that, in one of the first experiments, the sulphur content in 56 tons of pig iron was brought down from 0.186 to 0.035 pct in 117 min, but that a considerable shortening of the time would be possible. According to later reports by Eichholz and Behrendt,' it should be possible by this process to achieve a desulphurization speed of 0.35 pct S per hr for a consumption of 6 to 10 pct limestone and 2 to 3 pct coke, as fuel exclusively. The final sulphur content is, however, not stated. Domnarfvet Method After a number of different procedures had been investigated, the tests at Domnarfvet were directed to desulphurization with lime in a rotary furnace. Before going into the practical details of the method, the theoretical aspects will be discussed briefly. If the pig iron does not contain alloying elements other than carbon, the reaction can be expressed most simply by the usual equation: FeS + CaO + C = Fe + CaS + CO [I] 4H,. ~ 34,000 cal That this reaction can be carried through to a very complete desulphurization of pig iron has been shown by OelsenD in a discussion in connection with the Eulenberg and Krus' method. He mentions two laboratory tests, in one of which the sulphur content in the pig iron at 1400°C was reduced from 0.540 to 0.006 pct after treating with 3.35 pct lime. The pig iron had a low manganese content, but other analysis is th. given. Mention also should be made of the recently published investigations by Fischer and Cohnen'" dealing with the influence of the carbon content of the iron on desulphurization with lime, although in this case fluorspar was added also. The tests show that efficient desulphurization is possible with lime in the steel bath, provided that the carbon content is sufficiently high. The temperature employed in these tests was considerably higher (1620") than that normal for treatment of pig iron. The author concludes that the product S% X C% - 0.011 at the temperature in question.

Tile sharp-yield point found in magnesium crystals in the solulion-treated and aged condition is studied by dislocation internal-friction experiments. The results show that the sharp yield is not file to the sudden release of pinned dislocations hut is movc likely due to the rapid multiplication of an initially small number of dislocations. Recovery or the dislocation internal friction after deformation is also studied. This yecovery results from the re-pinning of dislocations by a solute, presumably nitrogen, which moves with a relatively small activation energy. SHARP-yield points, when they occur, are a striking feature of the stress-strain curve generated during a tensile test. Although commonly associated with steel, sharp yielding has been found in a variety of metallic and nonmetallic crystalline materials. In particular, sharp-yield points have been found in zinc"' and cadmium3 containing nitrogen. With this background, Geiselman and Guy4 investigated the tensile properties of magnesium single crystals containing nitrogen to see if sharp yielding also occurs in this system. They found that sharp yields did indeed occur in solution-treated and aged specimens tested at elevated temperature but were not able to give conclusive proof that the sharp yield was caused by nitrogen, a yield drop being observed even in their purest crystals. Sharp-yield points have also been found in various polycrystalline magnesium alloys.7'8 In the study of the sharp-yield phenomenon it is desired to observe the behavior of dislocations in the earliest stages of the deformation process. Internal-friction experiments are useful for this purpose because dislocation damping is sensitive to the mobility of free-dislocation segments. At low strain amplitudes the damping, A, due to the the forced vibration of dislocation segments of average length L is ? =KAL4 [1] where A is the dislocation density and K, if the applied frequency is well below the resonant frequency of the dislocation segments? is a constant for the sample under observation.5 Dislocation damping, because of the fourth-power dependence on L, is particularly sensitive to the creation of free-dislocation segments during deformation. Since sharp yielding is associated with the sudden release of pinned-dislocation segments, marked changes in the dislocation damping are expected at the yield point.6 The use of the dislocation-damping observations to help elucidate the incompletely understood mechanism of yielding in magnesium is the primary objective of the experiments reported here. PROCEDURE Many investigations have shown that very marked and rapid changes occur in the dislocation damping of of a deformed material as soon as the straining is stopped.5 It was quite essential, then, for the purpose of this investigation, to make the damping measurements during the deformation of the samples. This can only be accomplished through the use of the ultrasonic-pulse method. In this method traveling sound-wave pulses are used and, in contrast to resonating-bar methods, only the sample ends are set in vibration. Thus, the sample can be gripped along its sides in the tensile-test machine without disturbing the damping measurements. In the pulse method, the decrease in the amplitude of a sound pulse is measured as it travels back and forth through the sample. If A is the amplitude after traversing a distance x and A. is the initial amplitude, A=Aoe-ax [2] and a is called the attenuation. It is commonly measured either in units of cm-I or as db per µ sec. The observed attenuation in a metal sample is due to a number of causes. These include scattering by grain boundaries and impurity particles, thermo-elastic damping, diffraction effects, stress-induced ordering of solute atoms, and dislocation damping. The total observed attenuation in a given sample usually cannot be resolved into these various components, but changes in a due solely to changes in dislocation damping can be accurately determined, provided the experiment is arranged so that all other sources of damping are held constant. It is desired to reduce the extraneous sources of attenuation to a minimum and for this reason the experiments are done on single crystals of high purity. Magnesium crystals offer the further advantage that, when properly oriented, only a single set of slip planes is active during deformation. Crystal Preparation. The method of sample preparation is similar to that of Geiselman and Guy.4 The starting material was high-purity, sublimed magnesium rod supplied by the Dow Chemical Co. Melting under Dow 310 flux was used to reduce the nitrogen content of the starting material: the fluxing was done under an argon atmosphere and the

WHEN the Cushing field flooded the oil market in 1914 and 1915 with a daily output equal to nearly one-third of the world's production, the situation was soon corrected by increased consumption, and the price of crude oil rose from 45 c. per barrel in, February 1915 to $1.10 in December of the same year-the highest price paid in the Mid-Continent field up to that time. The intensive search for oil during the following seven years failed to disclose a single new ,field equal to Cushing, and many observers concluded that the rapidly increasing number of wells contributing to the world's output, each declining roughly 20 per cent. a year, combined with the rapidly increasing con¬sumption of petroleum, made it highly improbable that any field would; be found again sufficiently large to seri¬ously affect the oil market. That seven exceptional fields should then be discovered simultaneously is a remarkable coincidence. Long Beach, Santa Fe Springs, and Powell, each exceeded Cushing in daily output and reached the apex of their production during a year when Burbank, Tonkawa, - Smackover and Huntington Beach each contributed several times the daily output of the average new pool. This unexpected and tremendous flood of flush production could only have the effect of depressing price and greatly adding to stocks throughout the country. It was particularly depressing in the Mid-Continent as the new oil from California proved of attractive refining grade and because of cheap transportation by water easily undersold Oklahoma crude in the eastern markets.
