AST fall over half a million tons of ore and rock were broken in one blast at the open pit of the Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Company's operation, at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The following particulars of the blast, and details of the preparatory work, indicate how an operation of this scope is carried out. The data given, in essentially the present form, were first published by The Canadian Mining Journal. The area blasted was 150 ft. wide and about 700 ft. long. A total of 123 tons of 50 per cent forcite gelatin, in 5 by 16-in. cartridges, was used for the charge. Drilling for the blast was started on May 29, and was completed late in August, requiring 1297 machine shifts for drilling only. Total footage drilled for the shot was over 5 miles of 6-in. hole. The main blast consisted of 232 holes spaced on 17.5-ft.

AT the request of the Council of the Institute, I have the honor to submit the following remarks upon the Program of Tests under which the current work of the Watertown Arsenal Testing Laboratory is carried on, which comprises, among other items, the tests of steel ingot metal and derivative shapes. The intended scope of the tests may be illustrated by extracts from the descriptive part of the program as submitted by the Laboratory under date of April 17, 1907, and subsequently approved by the Chief of Ordnance, U. S. A. Under Item 1, Ingot Metal-Open hearth, acid and basic; Bessemer, acid and basic; crucible; fluid compressed and uncompressed-descriptive remarks were made as follows ; " A thorough, fundamental inquiry into the physical properties of steel necessarily begins with the ingot metal. Investigations, having for their object the improvement of steels, should also begin with the ingot. A knowledge of the ingot structure is essential for judging of the subsequent behavior or appearance of the metal. Under ordinary conditions, so little information is obtained from the ingot in individual cases that practically none of importance is acquired. These remarks have particular reference to the state of physical and structural soundness of the steel. Questions of chemical composition, segregation, piping and the grosser cavities have frequently been given attention. Defects of continuity of structure, which manifest themselves in the working; of the metal, and at the final stages cause distrust in the finished forging, have generally been neglected. ? This paper describes the microstructural changes that occur when quenched ultrahigh-strength steels containing OA pet C and various amounts of nickel, silicon, and cobalt are tempered. The changes that occur in hardness, yield strength, and martensite diffraction-peak widths when these steels are tempered are related to the precipitation of the carbide phases. An unea$ectedly high silicon content (about 30 pct) was found in the E -carbide phase in a steel containing only 1.5 pct Si. TEMPERED martensitic steels have such wide-spread utility that they have been the subject of numerous investigations, and a sizable amount of literature has developed on this subject.M This investigation, which is a part of a larger program to correlate microstructure with mechanical properties at a variety of strength levels, is limited to the microstructural changes that occur when a quenched 0.40 pct carbon steel (USS Airsteel X-200 steel) is tempered, and to the effects of the alloying elements—nickel, cobalt, and silicon—on these microstructures. Used in this investigation were electron microscopy, electron-diffraction identification of the carbide phases, electron-probe micro-analysis of the carbides, X-ray determinations of retained austenite, and measurements of martensite X-ray diffract ion-peak widths. MATERIALS AND METHODS The chemical analyses of the eight heats examined eats No. 30 through 37) are shown in Table L Heat No. 30 has the chemical com~osition of Airsteel X-200, and the remaining seven heats contain various amounts of nickel, chromium, cobalt, and silicon. The heats were air-melted in an induction furnace and cast into 8 by 8 in. ingots that were subsequently heated to 2300 and rolled to 1-in.-thick plate. Oversize 0.505-in.-diam tensile specimens were rough-machined from the plates and austenitized in air at 1700° F for half an hour and oil-quenched. The specimens were then tempered in air at temperatures of 400° to 1000 for tempering times of 1, 4, and 16 hr, and finish-machined to 0.505-in.-diam tensile specimens. Electron micrographs were prepared from Formvar replicas of the midthickness of tensile-specimen shanks that had been electrolytically polished and etched in nital. Electron-diffraction patterns were obtained from carbon-extraction replicas. The replicas were prepared by etching the sample surface in the same manner as for microscopy, evaporating carbon on the etched surface, and re-etching the sample to free the carbon film and the precipitate particles. Electron-probe microanalysis was performed on some of the extraction replicas. To obtain adequate fluorescent X-ray intensities, several thicknesses of replica were exposed to the electron beam so that the results represent an average composition of the extracted particles rather than an analysis of single precipitate particles. DURING the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide. The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the over- burden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and transported to the dump in quarry cars. Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semi- circle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft. above it. As there is no adequate supply of water above the quarry, the water must be pumped from the river. As quarrying progressed the pipe line was moved until the discharge points are now over 300 ft. above the river. Water is pumped from the river by a four-stage centrifugal pump having a 5-in. intake and a 4-in. discharge. It is direct-connected to a 200-hp., 2300-volt, 1760-r.p.m. induction motor. At 1760 r.p.m. the rated capacity of the pump is 750 gal. per minute under a head of 600 ft. The pump is installed in a house of frame construction on the river bank, about 10 ft. above normal water level, which also houses the pump for the mill-water supply. Above the pumps are hoisting bays into which the motors are raised whenever the river reaches flood stage. An 8-in. suction line, equipped with a strainer and a foot valve, takes the water from a concrete sump at the edge of the river. The pipe line from the pump consists of 1750 ft. of 8-in. spiral steel flanged pipe and 800 ft. of 4-in. spiral steel flanged pipe. The connection from the pump

I do not think too much emphasis can be placed upon creation of favorable climate for development of foreign mineral resources to feed the hungry maw of our industrialized nation. We have become dependent, not only upon the ten raw products indicated in Mr. Bancroft's article, but upon 71 mineral substances listed by DMPA as in short supply. Forty-four of these are metals, 9 are chemical minerals and 18 are nonmetallic minerals. Of this list only 8 are produced in any large quantity in the United States, and all are vital in peace-time industry. Even more, they are absolutely essential for defense. This represents our present needs. But if our consumption and requirements are projected over the next 25 years as is done by the President's Materials Policy Commission-The Paley Report-our future outlook becomes appalling. The divergence of consumption over production, even allowing for substitution and conservation, will widen in the future. This means our dependence upon foreign raw materials, mainly minerals, will grow. What are the chief foreign sources of minerals for our future needs? They are chiefly Latin America and the dominions and colonies of the Western European nations. The British Commonwealth countries contain in abundance those minerals which the U. S. lacks. Of 32 of the most critical minerals the Commonwealth is deficient in 7 and lacks only 1; whereas the U. S. is deficient in 18. Strikingly, our deficient minerals are abundant in the Commonwealth and several of their deficiencies are in excess in the U. S. Resources of the two nations complement each other. If Europe should be overrun by an unfriendly power that could control the destinies and resources of the European dominions and colonies, our industrial life would be placed in severe jeopardy. Therefore, I heartily endorse Mr. Bancroft's statements regarding the Point IV program, provided the program is wisely administered and implemented. It is from the underdeveloped countries, as pointed out by Mr. Bancroft, that most of our future mineral supplies will have to come. Many of the underdeveloped source countries are African colonies and dominions of Western European nations. Our present aid to Europe, therefore, is not, as many infer, a purely one-sided affair; it safeguards our future industrial development and security. Development aid directly to the underdeveloped countries through a well administered Point IV program, can do much, I believe, to safeguard our prosperity. I regard it as a wise investment for future U. S. mineral needs. Dr. Alan M. During the past several years has occurred what, in the light of future events, may aptly be called the rebirth of the acid Bessemer process. The increased attention given to the technical and metallurgical details involved in the production of Bessemer steels has been exceedingly fruitful, and indicates the value of further research and p1ant development. In times like these, when the steelmaking capacity of the country is operating at a maximum rate to supply materials for the national defense program, it behooves the Bessemer operator not only to strive to increase production but also to maintain a high standard of quality. The opportunity is ripe, it seems, to recapture fields of application once considered the birthright of Bessemer steels, but supplanted in recent years by open-hearth grades. This involves cooperation all along the line, from the blast-furnace operator to the metallurgical contact man and salesman. The metallurgist's part in this program involves the study of the many steelmaking variables and the measures necessary to ensure constancy in the finished product. It is equally important that the knowledge gained be disseminated widely to ensure the wise application of Bessemer steels in new fields. The merits of Bessemer steels for certain work are well understood. The combined properties of good weldability, machinabil-ity and stiffness are unique and fully explain the strong entrenchment of Bessemer steels in certain fields; e.g., skelp for small butt-weld conduit, screw steels machined in automatics, and certain tin-plate applications. It is the purpose of this paper to review briefly the physical properties of Bessemer steels as contrasted with those of open-hearth steels, to discuss control measures now employed in the making of Bessemer steel, and to consider the advantages derived from the use of these control measures. Physical Properties oF Bessemer vs. Open-hearth Steels A number of Bessemer blows and open-hearth heats were tested for tensile strength, ductility and impact strength. The steels selected were confined to sections from 3/4 to 1 1/4-in. diameter, inclusive, and the carbon content covered was sufficient to yield parallel ranges in ultimate strength for the comparison. Other factors, such as the extent of deoxidation of the steel and variations in chemistry, were kept as comparable as possible. Machined test pieces of 0.505-in. diameter with an 8-in. gauge length were pulled. The data obtained are shown in Fig. I, ultimate strength being plotted against carbon content. This graph shows that for equivalent carbon content Bessemer steel has on the average 15,000 lb. per sq. in. greater tensile strength and, conversely, for the same tensile strength Bessemer steel requires on the average 0.14 per cent less carbon. The average phosphorus content for the Bessemer steel was 0.090 per cent,

The concepts of ore reserve estimation at the Henderson mine are reviewed presenting a geostatistical approach and procedure as applied. Specific problems encountered are recapped and explained as to the nature and resolution thereof. The methodology and results are shown, along with an approximation of computer usage and capacities needed. The scope of the paper is to set forth an example of actual application, usage, and benefits realized from such a procedure. Local Conditions The Henderson molybdenite deposit is located in central Colorado about 69 kilometers west of Denver. The geology consists of a classic subvolcanic ryolite porphyry sequence with quartz-molybdenite mineralization occurring in an extensively fractured granite stock complex. Being assymetric and bilobate in section, the orebody measures approximately 300 meters thick and 600 meters by 1200 meters in plan. The orebody is sampled by means of underground drill holes which create an east-west fan pattern spaced roughly 60 meters apart in the north-south direction. Approximately 27,000 meters of drill hole assayed on 3.04-meter intervals were available for analysis. Recovery on the core is about 95 to 100 percent, thereby affording us with reliable data all prepared to the same standards.

The induction-electrical log is a combination of a SP curve, a short normal curve, and an induction log; all three logs being recorded simultaneously in a single run. The spacing of the short normal is 16 in. The induction log is designated as 5FF40, which means that the sonde involves five coils and a focusing system, and that the distance between the main coils is 40 in. Examples of induction-electrical logs are shown in Figs. 13 and 15. The right-hand track contains the induction conductivity curve. The scale of this curve is linear with the units of conductivity, i.e., mhos/m or millimhos/m (mmhos/m), increasing from right to left. The same curve can be read in the reverse direction as a resistivity log, with a hyperbolic scale. In the middle track, the solid curve represents the short normal. (An amplified short normal is also shown in Fig. 15). The dotted curve is the resistivity curve of the induction log, i.e., the reciprocal of the conductivity curve, recorded with the same linear scale as the short normal. The SP is in the left-hand track. In this combination, the SP curve and the 16-in. normal are the essential correlation curves, as in the conventional electrical log. The induction log provides a more accurate and detailed record of formation boundaries than the conventional log, especially in hard rock territories. Furthermore, the induction-electrical log makes possible the determination of fluid content, particularly in thin beds—at least qualitatively and very often quantitatively. In such thin beds, because of the adverse effect of the adjacent formations, the responses of the conventional devices are generally doubtful and/or incom-plete. Another advantage of the new combination is that the induction log is little affected by the presence of thin hard streaks interbedded within the permeable sections, whereas such occurrences are the cause of serious distortions of the long normal and lateral curves. The evaluation of saturation from any resistivity log implies the knowledge of the true resistivity R, of the bed and of the resistivity R.. of the flushed zone, or at least of the ratio Rxo/Rc. With the induction-electrical log run in fresh mud, the 16-in. nor-mal has a smaller radius of investigation than the induction log, so that the former reads closer to R.. and the latter closer to Rt. Thus, it has been observed that the ratio of the 16-in. normal to the induction log readings can be used as a basis for the interpretation in terms of saturation, with the help of appropriate charts. The purpose of the present paper is essentially to explain this procedure and to provide the corresponding charts. On the other hand, when a formation is deeply invaded, the response of any log (in particular the induction log) depends upon the radial distribution of formation resistivities behind the wall of the hole, which itself is a function of the arrangement of the fluids saturating the formation pore spaces. This paper, accordingly, will begin with a schematic description of the distribution of fluids and resistivities in the invaded zone. Next, some essential characteristics of the induction log will be reviewed. Finally, the determination of the interpretation charts and their application will be explained. The discussion will be confined to the case of fresh muds, i.e., muds whose resistivity is at least five times as great as that of the formation waters. With the present equipment the induction log is not well adapted for logging in salty mud. The Laterolog and guard electrode log are at their best under conditions of low resistivity mud. It is commonly recognized that a given material may be described as ductile or brittle only with reference to the conditions of test. Thus under the usual test conditions quartz is brittle, but under high pressures it is ductile. Salts that are brittle at room temperature become ductile at elevated temperatures. Pitch, brittle with respect to rapid loads, flows at low rates of loading. Pearlitic steel, ductile under the usual conditions of test, may be embrittled under the proper conditions of combined stresses, temperature, and rate of loading. Earlier Investigations A clear analysis of the conditions necessary for plastic flow and for fracture was first given by LudwikI1 who introduced two types of stress, the "flow stress" and the "stress at fracture." These stresses may refer to tensile or to shear stresses, or, in fact, to any type of stress. Ludwik considered these two stresses to be independent of one another, functions of the conditions of test and of the prior history of the material. For the purpose of analysis. both a Flow stress and a stress at fracture can be envisaged as functions of strain over the entire range from zero to infinite strain. Thus, the material is brittle if the stress at fracturc is less than the flow stress and ductile if the reverse is true. According to Ludwik's analysis, the problem of determining the effects of combined stresses, of temperature and of strain rate upon the behavior of metals reduces to a problem of determining the effect of these variables upon the flow stress and upon the stress at fracture. In the present paper, methods are described for determining the effects of two of these variables, temperature and strain rate, and examples are given of the dependence of tlow stress and stress at fracture, upon these two variables. The effect of combined stresses will be discussed in a succeeding paper. The flow stress may be determined from a load-diameter curve. Load-diameter curves were obtained over a wide range of temperature and over the limited range of strain rates obtainable with the lever-type Riehle machine used. The curves were then converted to an extremely wide range of strain rate by making use of the equivalence of the effects of changes in strain rate and changes in temperature, previously proposed2 and demonstrated3 by the authors. According to this principle of equivalence, strain rate e and temperature T affect the flow stress only through a single parameter-p of the form: p = eeQ/RT 111 In this equation, R is the gas constant (2 cal. per gram mol per deg. C.), and Q is a heat of activation, which varies from material to material, and may depend upon the strain, but not upon the strain rate or the temperature. IN this paper I shall attempt a description of the successful extraction of coal from this property after it had been on fire for probably fifty years, or more, and after attempts, made at various times, which had still left considerable coal behind. The Richmond coal-field has a well-founded bad reputation, arising from the circumstance that many of its collieries have had to be abandoned, from time to time, if not entirely, on account of fires, caused by spontaneous combustion, to which the character of the coal in this field renders them peculiarly liable. While I fully assent to the opinion that this trouble lies in the nature of the coal, which is highly bituminous, and the seams of which are, moreover, divided by slaty bands, through which, as also in the coal, iron pyrites is more or less disseminated, often in microscopically small particles, I must, nevertheless, declare that many lamentable disasters, causing great loss of life and property, could have been avoided if a suitable system of mining had been pursued in all the collieries. If this could not have been done from the beginning of mining in this section of country (the history of which can be traced back to over one hundred years), at least experience enough existed upon this subject thirty and forty years ago to dictate the avoidance of the dangers to a considerable extent. It is therefore necessary here to refer first, in a few remarks, to the character of the coal deposits, particularly in this immediate neighborhood, the Midlothian being one of the oldest and most extensive mines, and some of its coal being much subjected to spontaneous combustion. I must also refer to the history of former managements to explain more clearly the results which were arrived at. MULTIPHASE diffusion has been studied for many years in two-component systems1,2 and many of the experimental aspects are now fairly well understood.314 Although by no means all of the problems connected with the two-component case have been solved,' attention has recently been directed to the more complex situation involving three components. The pioneer work of Clark and Rhines6 yielded a qualitative picture of the types of behavior that can occur, and Clark7 has suggested conventions for describing the various phenomena. Kirkaldy and co-workers8,9 have made quantitative studies in several ternary systems and have offered explanations of the occurrence of isolated and nonisolated precipitates. At present, however, there is no comprehensive theory for the variety of phenomena observed in ternary, multiphase diffusion. By analogy with several studies that have been made of multiphase diffusion in the binary Cu-Zn system,2'10'11 a similar exploratory study was made of Cu-Zn-Ni alloys lying along the line in the ternary diagram from the point 80 Cu-20 Ni to the zinc corner of the diagram, Fig. 1. A principal question to be answered was whether initially plane interfaces would remain plane during the course of one-dimensional diffusion. The diffusion specimens studied are described in Table I. The five separate alloys from which they were made were melted in evacuated Vycor capsules from 99.9 pct purity copper, zinc, and nickel. Since some of the alloys were too brittle to be swaged, all of the alloys were used in the cast condition. To facilitate later homogenization, the molten alloys were solidified by plunging the capsule in water. Homogenization heat treatment was done at 720°C for 20 hr. The five nominal compositions in weight percent zinc and nickel, respectively, were: 37.5, 12.5; 44.0, 11.2; 50.0, 10.0; 55.0, 9.0; 65.0, 7.0. Welding was done in a special threaded vise which was heated at 500°C for about an hour in an atmosphere of flowing hydrogen. The purpose of this article is to describe several types of borehole lining in common use, and especially to offer a relatively new means of reducing the expense of maintaining boreholes where they are subjected to corrosive action of water flowing either inside or outside of their casing. In the Anthracite region of Pennsylvania, boreholes are used for many purposes, the principal ones being: openings between the surface and underground workings through which are passed steam, water and compressed-air lines, ropeways from surface hoists to underground rope haulages, conduits for electric power and signal lines, water-discharge lines from underground pumping stations, and inlets to mine workings for flushing material. Linings for Boreholes The inadequacy of steel pipe for use in boreholes has long been recognized. Various substitute materials have been tried, including screw-joint cast-iron pipe (Fig. I). Cast-iron pipe, while very effective as a discharge line for acid water (mine water) being pumped to the surface, is not so effective when serving as a conduit for silt and crushed rock being flushed underground for filling mine voids. Terra cotta pipe (Fig. 2) has been used in boreholes, and lasts a long time if the glazed inner surface of the pipe remains intact. Its installation in a borehole is very difficult and is recommended only where it is certain that there will be no subsidence of the surrounding territory. Accessibility in order properly to join each section of the pipe is essential to a satisfactory job. In large water holes, where it is possible to lower a man into the hole for sealing the joints of the pipe, glazed terra cotta pipe has been used successfully for delivering mine water from pumps in the mines. For large holes used for flushing refuse into mine workings where the surface wash is shallow, standard paving brick have been used to form a tube through the wash to the bedrock. These brick are laid radially, backed by common brick and cobbles laid in cement. It is obvious that the shaft through the wash must be large enough to permit a man to work in it. The flushing material is carried through bare rock from the juncture at bedrock to the openings underground. This plan has been used particularly where a cast-iron surface line is laid upon the surface to carry the flushing material from the breaker to the hole, and down the hole continuously, with no opening to the air at the top of the hole, thereby eliminating the necessity of an attendant at this point (Fig. 3). Another similar type of borehole lining is constructed of hexagonal pieces of vitrified brick (Fig. 4). This type requires a steel drive pipe through the surface wash large enough to provide a finished tube of the desired size surrounded by a brick wall about 4 in. thick. DIFFERENT authors1 ' have been engaged in meas-uring the vapor pressure of pure cobalt. The results of their measurements satisfy the expected temperature dependence of vapor pressure and are in mutual agreement, with the exception of the results by De Dyk Man and ~esmejanov.~ The latter authors, by using the effusion method, have achieved considerably higher values than other workers. By using the isotope exchange method they obtained much lower values than other authors. The determination of thermodynamic functions of the binary Ni-Co system was carried out, as far as we know, only by De Dyk Man and Nesmejanov.4 This determination was based on extremely low values of vapor pressure over pure cobalt obtained by the isotope exchange method. Therefore we considered it useful to repeat these measurements. Furthermore, the reliable values of thermodynamic functions should complement the migration characteristics, the inner magnetic field data obtained by Miissbauer effect measurements, specific heat data, and the K effect and positron annihilation characteristics that have been achieved for the Ni-Co system in the Institute of Metallurgy of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Brno.5-9 The measurements in this paper were performed by the isotope exchange method. In this method, as has been shown by analysis,10-'3 the vaporization rate, w, can be calculated from the relation w = k/1oSw [1] i0Sw) [1] where L, is the activity per unit mass of the source, S is the area of evaporation, k is the tangent at the point t = 0 to the curve giving the radioactivity de-pendence of the target vs annealing time, t, and wis the probability for the tracer atom condensation on the target surface. The value for cc. can be obtained from the equation w = a + 2P(l-a) [2] where P is Clausing's coefficient and a is the condensation coefficient. In the present work the cylinder shaped containers for annealing the samples were used, characterized by the ratio 1:d = 1.06. Here 1 is the length and d the diameter of the container. For this ratio P = 0.514 and w =0.5, and w is independent of the condensation coefficient. The vaporization rate is related to the vapor pressure p by the relation where R is the gas constant, T is the absolute temperature, and M is the molecular weight of the component investigated. Measurements of the vapor pressure of the i component over the pure metal, p!, and the alloy, pi, at the given temperature and composition enable one to calculate the thermodynamic activity of this component from the equation ai=pi/pi [4] is and the activity coefficient ri=ai/xi [5] xi where xi is the molar fraction of the investigated alloy component. EXPERIMENTAL Evaporization rate measurements were carried out with pure cobalt and eight different Ni-Co alloys, which were kindly delivered by the Centre National de Recherches Me'tallurgiques Liege, Belgium. The composition of the alloys is given in Table I. The cobalt used in these alloys contained the following impurities: 0.016 wt pct Fe, 0.014 wt pct Cu, 0.01 wt pct Mn. Other elements were present in much lower concentrations. From the melts, samples in the form of small cylinders of 12 mm in diam were ma-chined. The thickness of the targets and sources was 2.5 and 1.2 mm, respectively. The lower thickness of the sources was chosen to make their over-all ac-tivity as low as possible. The difference between blast-furnace gas and ordinary producer-gas is chiefly that blast-furnace ga,s is higher in CO2 and lower in hydrocprbons and hydrogen, as is shown in Table I. Blast-furnace gas, however, possesses a virtue which is sometimes absent in producer-gas, especially with coals very high in sulphur—namely, that blast-furnace gas is relatively free from sulphur. In some regions the sulphur in coal is an acute problem, and it is highly desirable to find uses for the mine-products which are specially high in sulphur-content. An advantage would be gained if the coal were coked before charging into the gas-producers, but this adds to the expense. Sulphur may be partly eliminated from coal by washing it, the success depending upon the form in which the sulphur occurs, and upon the efficiency of the washer, but it cannot always be removed to the extent desired at most American plants. (New York meeting, February, 1913.) IN the study of ore deposits water plays a very prominent part. The small group of igneous ores involve it least, but in all the rest it is an invariable feature. The ground-water, therefore, is perhaps as appropriate a subject for discussion before a session of the American Institute of Mining Engineers as any topic which might be selected. The theme is if anything the more appropriate, because two very important contributions to it have already appeared in the Transactions. The great essay in 1893 of Franz Posepny,1 systematized and classified the subject, and was doubtless not without its influence in leading to the presentation in 1900, by C. R. Van Hise, of an important contribution entitled Some Principles Controlling the Deposition of Ores.2 We all recall the discussions of 10 or 12 years ago, and the interest in these themes which then prevailed in the Institute. They are collectively accessible in the separate edition wisely assembled by Dr. Raymond, and now to be supplemented by the Emmons Volume. Views have been progressing in the past decade or more, and new evidence has been brought to light. A general summary and concise statement may, therefore, not be without interest.

The puiblication by the Institute of a small geological map of the United States calls for an explanation of its peculiarities. The title intimates that it is intended "to illustrate the schemes of coloration and nomenclature recommended by the International Geological Congress." By way of further explanation it is said to be "based, by permission of the Director of the United States Geological Survey, upon the map published in his Fifth Annual Report, the portions not colored in that map being here supplied from other sources." The map referred to was prepared by W. J. McGee, and in the text of the report containing it he has given a list of the authorities employed in the compilation. The scheme of coloration used for the map was the one proposed by the Director, in the Seeond Annual Report, for the publications of the United States Geological Survey, which differed materially from those employed by the older American geologists. Because of the increasing diversity in the particular colors employed to represent rocks by geologists in different countries, and of the existence of very dissimilar schemes of nomenclature, it seemed best to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, at its Buffalo meeting in 1876, to appoint an international committee of geologists, who should consult together, and, if feasible, to call an International Congress to discuss these subjects. The proposition met with favor, and the meeting was called. The first session was held at Paris, in 1878, when geologists were present from twenty different countries. Once organized, the Congress has perpetuated itself, enacting regulations for its conduct, choosing the French language for its medium of communication, and arranging for the compilation of a geological map of Europe upon which the perfected schemes of coloration and nomenclature will be delineated. The American Association maintains a standing committee to represent it at the international sessions, and to report their proceedings. Tarnish films on some of the common metals (particularly on copper and silver) have been of much scientific and commercial concern for a long time, but before the development of the electrical method1 of measuring film thicknesses there was no satisfactory quantitative approach by which to study the separate parts of these complex films. This method has been adapted to the measurement of duplex (cuprous-cupric) oxide films on copper.2 In the present work it has been used to measure tarnish films on copper when they were mixtures of cuprous oxide and cuprous sulphide, and also when they contained cuprous oxide, cupric oxide and cuprous sulphide, each component part being measured at a different potential value. Oxide-coated copper specimens, prepared by heating copper in air at chosen temperatures for given periods, were exposed to moist hydrogen sulphide in air to forml the various oxide-sulphide films studied. The comparative resistances afforded by (I) different thicknesses of oxide films, and also (2) equal thicknesses of oxide and sulphide films, against severe attacks of hydrogen sulphide were measured. The electrical method requires that the time be observed for the cathodic reduction of each part of the film substance, and these respective time values multiplied by the constant current give the corresponding quantities of electricity expended. Then each millicoulomb per square centimeter represents a film thickness of M X 108____ 2DX 96,494 X 103 where M is weight of oxide (or sulphide) giving one gram-atom of oxygen (or sulphur) for cathodic reduction, D is density of the oxide (or sulphide) and t is the thickness in Angstrom units per millicoulomb per square centimeter. The value of t for cuprous sulphide (cubical) is 14.27, and is obtained by substituting 5.78 for D and 159.20 for M in equation a. Previous values hf t for cuprous and cupric oxides (12.36 and 6.39, respectively) were used in the present work.
