The activity of SiO2, in the entire liquid system SiO2-CaO-Mg0-A12O3 at 1600°C is calculated from the distribution of silicon between these slags and Fe-Si-C alloys saturated with either graphite or silicon carbide, the activity coefficient of silicon in these alloys, and the requisite thermodynamic data. The activities of the other components in the ternary systems SiO2-CaO-A12O3, SiO2-MgO-CaO, SiO2-MgO -A12O3 are computed from these data by the IrON blast-furnace slags can be regarded as consisting of the four major oxide components, SO2, CaO, MgO, and A12O3 along with minor proportions of other oxides and of sulfur. The purpose of this study is to measure the activity of silica in the liquid solutions of these four oxides at iron-making Gibbs-Duhem equation with the aid of the known free energies of several of the interoxide compounds and the accepted phase diagrams. Based on these activities, new data are Presented for the free energy of formation of a number of the interoxide compounds. The free energy of mixing the liquid metasilicates of CaO and MgO shows slight positive deviations from the ideal. temperatures and to obtain activities of the other components by application of the Gibbs-Duhem equation and the properties of several interoxide compounds. Recent investigations on the activity of silica in the SiO2-CaO-A12O3 system1-3 and recogntion of a serious error in older data for the free energy of formation of SiO2 (Ref. 4) have succeeded in bringing a fair degree of concordance into the results of different investigators. Mine fires are a serious hazard; surveys show that the coal-mining industry lags considerably behind industry in general in planning and training for fighting fires, and providing adequate fire-protection facilities. The results of the experiments discussed in this paper emphasize that every effort must be made to extinguish a fire in its incipient stage. The research also demonstrated that extinguishing agents and techniques, superior to those presently used in most operating mines, are available. An underground coal mine fire, if not extinguished quickly, can develop rapidly, create a serious hazard, and cause loss of life and property. The problem of controlling a fire increases in direct relationship to the time interval necessary to initiate control measures; as the fire increases in size and intensity it becomes progressively more difficult to cope with roof control, visibility, ventilation, and explosion prevention. Despite the constant vigilance of the industry, the number of coal mine fires is increasing. During the eight-year period, July 1952 to July 1960, following enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, the Bureau of Mines investigated 401 fires that caused 30 fatalities and 75 injuries. More than half of these fires burned for more than one shift; 20 pct could not be extinguished by direct attack and had to be sealed. Agents and techniques for extinguishing simulated mining-machine and underground coal fires have been investigated in the Bureau's experimental coal mine. The research shows that visibility in the fire area is a primary factor affecting control operations. Associated with good visibility is accessibility to the fire; the closer the attack can be made, the less time and quantity of agent are required for extinguishment. Approach to the fire and visibility are hindered by the smoke and hot gases backing up against the ventilating current. In open entries an increase in air velocity assists in driving smoke ahead; at low airspeeds approach can be made by placing a brattice across the lower two-thirds of the entry, pushing the smoke ahead with water sprays, or discharging rock-dust from a rock-dust distributor. Its success in mapping oil structure is due to the unique and definite nature of the depth data obtained. While articles on the principle and results of this method continue to appear in increasing number, there is virtually nothing published about the instruments used in this work. Several years ago, the writer started an experimental and theoretical investigation with the object of determining which characteristics would be best adapted to the problem at hand. As a result, an equipment was developed which has proved its usefulness in a great number of field tests. W. E. Pugh, now with the Empire Oil and Refining Co., joined the writer, in 1931 and 1932, in the laboratory experiments and field tests. In 1933, a paper was written on Certain Instrument and Field Problems in Reflection Seismology, and submitted to the Institute. This paper is a progress report on a study of the distribution of the banded ingredients (Figs. 1 and 2) in Illinois screenings and the method of determining their distribution. Proximate analyses and screen tests1 have been reported and a further report on the washability characteristics of the screenings is in preparation. The microscopic study of the screenings is not yet far enough advanced to permit a conclusive report on the effect of mining, screening and washing on the distribution of the banded ingredients in the coals of Illinois. However, considerable fundamental data have been collected as a background for the screenings investigation and for a proposed study of fuels composed of known quantities of vitrain, clarain and fusain, the three common banded ingredients of Illinois coals. These fundamental data and the preliminary information now available from the microscopic study of screenings are broadly indicative of the reaction of the coals to the physical processes affecting them in mining and preparation. Proximate analyses of samples of vitrain, clarain, and fusain from several Illinois mines have been published2, but those given in Table 1 serve to show the differences that are apparent in proximate analyses. The vitrain samples are consistently low in ash, and the unit-coal value is uniformly lower than in clarain. The average fuel ratio (F.C./V.M.) of the vitrain samples in the table is 1.57 whereas the clarain average is 1.42. The fusain analyses vary considerably in ash and moisture. In the two samples from this mine the moisture values range from 8.99 to 22.80 and the ash from 4.86 to 16.91 per cent. Fusain has higher fixed carbon than either vitrain or clarain but the percentage is erratic from sample to sample. IN the writer's opinion the term "block caving" has been rather loosely applied to a general principle of mining, and therefore detailed classification of caving methods and draw, together with the characteristics required for each method, will fill a desired need. Selection of caving method should be made only after a study of all governing conditions, such as size of orebody, lateral and vertical extent of ore-body, attitude, treatment demands, possible resultant pressures, and cost and profit comparison of methods. Successful caving methods can be classified under six main headings: (1) Full-protected block caving, (2) semi-protected block caving, (3) unprotected block caving, (4) full-panel caving, (5) half block-panel caving, (6) block-panel caving. The methods and factors governing choice of method are shown in Table I. Full-protected Block Caving Full-protected block caving consists of develop-ing, undercutting, and drawing to exhaustion a block of ore of predetermined size without coordination of mining or draw with adjoining areas. The block is mined and drawn as an independent unit (Fig. 1). Full-protected block caving demands that mining and draw cannot be done against unconsolidated capping in adjoining caved and exhausted blocks. Two sides of block are against solid. Caved capping must be allowed to consolidate for a suitable period, usually not less than one year. Pillars may be left in lieu of consolidated capping (Fig. 2). The advantages of full-protected block, caving are: (1) A definite area is developed, mined, and drawn as a unit so that all work may be completed, the block drawn to exhaustion in the minimum length of time, and the area then abandoned. (? Production is not restrained because of coordina1, on with adjoining areas. (3) Records of draw and caved reserve of ore are good. Upon abanwnment of the block, accountability for production is closed out with no carry-over to adjoining areas. The disadvantages of full-protected block caving are: (1) Side dilution from the draw adjacent to the consolidated capping may be serious, particularly where capping does not consolidate sufficiently in the allotted time. (2) Boundary weakening is needed on the solid sides of the block except in weak rocks. (3) Maximum cantilever and compression effect to aid caving and fragmentation may not be secured since the draw should proceed from the solid to the consolidated capping to minimize side dilution. However, undercutting from the loose (caved capping) to the solid with a slight initial draw in the same manner will develop cantilever effect. (4) A period of at least one year, more is usually desirable, must be allowed for caved capping ,to consolidate before mining the adjoining block, depending upon the characteristics of the capping. (5) Capping may not consolidate sufficiently in the time that can be allowed. Full-protected block caving is indicated where: (1) The ground is weak and heavy and workings

A method is presented which allows the extension of the Ergun equation for the description of gas flow through packed beds in a nonisothermal regime. The pressure profile in the packed bed is calculated by the establishment of a differential energy balance and the iterative integration of the integral equation thus obtained. The predicted values of the pressure distribution were found to be in excellent agreement with those measured experimentally, under carefully controlled conditions. MANY metallurgical processes are carried out in systems in which a gas stream and particular solids are contacted in a packed bed arrangement under strongly nonisothermal conditions. Ore sintering, the firing of pellets, the operation of regenerators, blast furnace technology may be quoted as examples. Although many aspects of these systems have been extensively studied, an important variable, the pressure distribution and the relationship between pressure head and flow rate, received only little attention to date. The purpose of the paper is to present a brief survey of relevant previous work, followed by a more rigorously formulated model, together with experimental results that afford ready comparison of theoretical prediction with measurement. PREVIOUS WORK A great deal of information is available in the chemical engineering literature on flow phenomena in porous media.' The experimental results pertaining to gas flow were generally interpreted in terms of models based on the analogy with the flow through a pipe of an incompressible, isothermal fluid. Of the numerous, semiempirical correlations that have been proposed to relate pressure drop to the volumetric flow rate, the Ergun equation2 is generally regarded as the most satisfactory: The strong nonisothermality of the metallurgical systems previously mentioned would render the direct applicability of Eq. [I] rather doubtful as both density and viscosity are temperature-dependent. Ergun has used Eq. [I] for estimating the pressure drop in the stack region in the blast furnace by neglecting the viscous term and evaluating the gas density at the integral mean temperature.3 His calculations showed a rather variable agreement with measurements and it was uncertain whether the discrepancy found was attributable to the model or to the inaccuracies often inherent in measurements on an industrial scale. Other work on nonisothermal systems includes studies of the pressure distribution in sinter beds, notably by Voice et a1.4 and Mitchell.5 Mitchell developed a method involving the subdivision of the bed into several zones and assigning average property values (temperature, gas density, and so forth) to each zone. The pressure drop was then calculated for each zone by using an expression analogous to Eq. [I]. This method was an improvement over that described by Voice et al., but even here prediction and measurement differed by as much as 30 pct in certain cases. It would appear that no really satisfactory methods are available for the prediction of pressure drop in packed beds with a strongly nonisothermal regime. The method involving subdivision of the bed into small enough sections, that may be regarded as isothermal, would show promise; however its validity has to be tested by both a rigorous formulation and comparison with experimental data obtained under controlled conditions. In the following a formulation is presented together with experimental data allowing ready practical evaluation of the theory. SMALL buttons of fused tantalum have been produced by are fusion in a vacuum, by drawing an arc between sticks of pressed tantalum and a tantalum-faced water-cooled copper block. However, ingots of appreci-able size can be produced only by the heat-treatment of bars pressed from powder. The following outline covering the production of finished bars of tantalum by the methods of powder metallurgy is also used for the production of columbium, taking into account the difference in the melting points of these two metals. PRESSING THE POWDER With possibly a few exceptions, a pressing operation is one of the essential steps in the practice of powder metallurgy. In fact, the author's experience with a number of high-melting-point metals and with numer-ous types of hard carbide compositions has led him to believe that this operation is often one of the most important in the- entire process, and frequently one of the most difficult to carry out in a satisfactory manner. Defects clue to improper pressing can readily lead to a defective finished product. It is the author's opinion that rarely is a bar or other article pressed from metal powder in such a way that all parts of the piece are uniformly pressed. The nearest approach to uniformity of pressing is possibly attained when the powder is contained in a flexible receptacle, such as rubber, and is pressed under a liquid by hydrostatic pressure. However, this method is not generally applicable. Hydraulic pressing in steel dies where one or two punches are forced into the die must usually be resorted to. As the pressure in such a die is built up, the powder begins to cling to the walls of the die with a tenacity dependent upon the nature of the powder, and this results in a bridging action, so that the layers of powder adjacent to the moving punch are pressed more heavily than those further removed in the mass. Frequently, as the pressure is carried higher, there may be a mass slippage of the powder upon itself, with the result that slip cracks are formed within the pressed

THE importance of aluminum-silicon alloys in the light alloy field is now generally recognized. Where silicon was once considered detrimental to the properties of aluminum, useful alloys now contain as much as 13 per cent. Furthermore, silicon is present as an impurity in aluminum of even the purest grades. Iron is another important impurity in aluminum and like silicon is found in small quantities in the purest aluminum available today. The manner of occurrence of iron and silicon in commercially pure aluminum and many of its alloys exerts a very pronounced influence upon their properties. The effect of large quantities of iron in aluminum-silicon alloys is so detrimental that it has been found necessary to limit the allowable maximum percentage to as low a figure as is consistent with quantity production and satisfactory physical properties. The intimate relation existing between iron and silicon in aluminum and aluminum alloys makes necessary a more complete knowledge of this ternary system. This paper is divided into two principal parts, dealing respectively with aluminum-silicon solubility equilibria and the constitution of aluminum-iron-silicon alloys. PART I.-ALUMINUM-SILICON ALLOYS The early work on this system was largely confined to determining the general form of the diagram and in this respect the results are in good agreement. Briefly, aluminum and silicon form a simple eutectiferous series without compounds. Until recently the solid solubility of silicon in aluminum had not been accurately determined. Fraenkel1 (1908) stated that aluminum will retain 0.5 per cent. silicon in solid solution. Rosenhain, Archbutt and Hanson2 gave the maximum solubility as about 1.50 per cent. and added that "this solubility does not appear

LMENITE, rutile, zircon, and other heavy minerals are found in small amounts in the sand that covers most of Florida. Small enriched deposits occur on the beaches and coastal dunes. One beach deposit east of Jacksonville was worked during World War I and another near Vero Beach during World War 11. Both ceased operation when the resumption of imports reduced prices. Early in World War II reduction of rutile imports made a domestic source of the mineral necessary to maintain the expansion of armaments. Explorations made near Jacksonville discovered a relatively large body of low-grade ore about 10 miles inland from the beaches. A plant installed by Rutile Mining Co. of Florida using both flotation and tables encountered difficulties because of low plant capacity and organic slimes in the ore. In 1944 Humphreys Gold Corp. solved the problem of concentrating the low-grade ore by using the newly developed Humphreys spiral concentrator and by mining with a hydraulic dredge. This combination of low cost mining and concentration permitted the plant to continue operation in competition with foreign ores when imports were resumed following the war. The success of the Jacksonville operation renewed interest in Florida as a source of titanium. An extensive survey of the state was made by E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., Inc., under the direction of J. L. Gillson in 1945 to 1946. Sampling was carried on by drive pipe drilling to depths of 20 to 25 ft. Encouraging values were discovered near the location of the present Trail Ridge mine, 50 miles southwest of Jacksonville, near the town of Starke. The United States Bureau of Mines was interested in exploring for heavy minerals in Florida, and on the recommendation of both the state geologist of Florida and of Du Pont geologists, drilled deeper where marginal indications were found on Trail Ridge. In 1947 it was discovered that sufficiently higher values occurred at depth to make the deposit commercial. The orebody at Trail Ridge is a long sand deposit averaging about 1 mile in width and 35 ft in depth. It is approximately 1 1/2 miles wide at the north end of the portion now being worked, tapering to a blunt point 3 miles to the south. The ore reaches a maximum depth of 65 ft near the center and feathers out into barren sand at the edges. The ground surface is relatively flat and is covered with vegetation including pine, scrub oak, palmetto, and occasionally in swampy areas, cypress. The remain of a dense woody growth underlies and marks the bottom of the Ore 'One. It is difficult to drill through this layer, but in some cases where it is less than 5 ft thick it has been possible to drive through the wood. Sand lying below is coarser than that in the ore zone and contains no values. The wood layer consists of unconsolidated carbonized fragments of branches and other forest trash associated with a considerable amount of ar-

STREAMS and rivers are the principal channels into which the weathering products of rocks and their contained ores are funneled. The inorganic load of a stream system is a crude sample of all the earth materials in the drainage basin of the stream, and the heavy mineral assemblage of sediments is one of the oldest and most successful guides to certain kinds of bedrock ore in unexplored terrain. Early application of this method was made possible by the ease of separation and identification of heavy minerals in the field with the simplest equipment. Water analysis for traces of base metals became a practical possibility about eight years ago with the development of rapid chemical tests that could be carried out at the field site.' , Since that time the water method has been widely used in mineral reconnaissance, and a substantial number of discoveries have been reported. Here again, the techniques developed for this work were relatively simple and could be performed easily at the field site. Sediment analysis by chemical methods, as distinguished from mineralogical, has received less at- tention. Some experimental work was done by Lovering and others," but to the authors' knowledge, chemical analysis of sediment samples has not been used in routine exploration programs until very recently. In spite of the obvious promise of this method, it was not pursued vigorously because of the lack of a simple and portable chemical test that could be used conveniently at the field site or in a field camp. Procedures that had been developed for trace analysis of soils all called for a rigorous chemical attack with hot acids—tests more conveniently applied in processing large volumes of routine soil samples at an established field headquarters. Recently an extremely rapid and simple test was developed by Bloom.4,5 The extractant used in this procedure is a cold solution of ammonium citrate. Elements measured are the heavy metals, principally zinc, lead, and copper. This method differs from the established procedures for soil analysis in that it measures only a small fraction, about 5 pct, of the total metal content of the sample. It has been found, however, that the significant pattern of metals in the sediments of streams below a base-metal deposit can be brought out as well and sometimes better by this simple cold-extraction procedure than by the more tedious methods requiring hot acids. Kansas produced 41,966,773 bbl. of oil in the year 1927, thereby taking fourth place among the oil-producing states of the Union. The daily average production decreased from 121,609 bbl. in January to 110,244 bbl. in December. Due to excessive flush production and the resulting decline in the price of crude during the year, operations, both in proved and outlying districts, were reduced materially from those of 1926. There were 2338 completions in 1926, but only a total of 1333 in 1927. Regardless of this decrease in the total number of completions, Kansas made a slight gain in total production for the year, producing 620,262 bbl. more than in 1926. This is accounted for, in part, by the comparative long life of the settled production from the Bartlesville sand areas to the east of the Nemaha granite ridge, and by prolific production in eastern Summer County from horizons new in their importance in the state, productive here at two localities along the axis of the granite ridge (Table 1 and Figs. 1, 2 and 3.) For convenience in further consideration, the state is divided into Eastern and "Western" Kansas. Special emphasis will be placed on those areas in the state of which but little is generally known, and which have not been given detailed consideration in previous publications.

The fundamental equations that are used to describe two-phase fluid flow in porous media are Darcy's law for each phase and an equation of continuity for each component. The special case of one-dimensional, incompressible, two-phase flow has received much attention in the petroleum engineering literature.1-10 The basic paper on the subject is that of Buckley and Leverett.2 Buckley and Leverett showed that one could eliminate the pressure and obtain a single partial differential equation for the saturation. They solved this equation for the case when gravity and capillary forces are negligible. A frequently encountered property of the solution of the basic partial differential equation is that, as time progresses, the saturation becomes a multiple-valued function of the distance coordinate, x. Buckley and Leverett interpreted the formation of multiple values as an indication that the saturation-distance curve had be-come discontinuous. They developed a method of determining the position of the discontinuity from a material balance. We solve the Buckley-Leverett partial differential equation using the method of characteristics and the concept of shocks. Our treatment is analogous to treatments used in the theory of supersonic compressible flow." Although the numerical results obtained are the same as those obtained by previous methods, we believe that this approach is more logical and has broader applicability. It can, for example, be generalized to treat the case when the fluids are compressible. It is not clear how one would go about doing this using the method of Buckley and Leverett. To illustrate the power of the method of characteristics with shocks, we solve a problem in gravity segregation which has not been treated previously in the literature. A special case of the general method developed here was used by Welge, to solve a particular fluid displacement problem. We consider two-phase incompressible flow along the vertical direction x in a porous medium. We assume that there is no flow transverse to .x. We measure positive in the upward direction. The fundamental equations are obtained from Darcy's law and the mass conservation law. Since the two phases are incompressible, mass conservation is equivalent to volume conservation.

INFORMATION regarding the use of manganese alloys has hitherto been incomplete and available only from widely scattered sources. This paper attempts a systematic description of properties .and uses of alloys other than manganese bronze, manganin and duralumin, which are probably the only non-ferrous alloys associated with manganese in the minds of most metallurgists.1 PROPERTIES OF MANGANESE Manganese can react either acid or basic; it is hard to obtain in the pure state; it has two different crystalline lattice structures, both of the cubic system, one stable above 850° C. and the other below 650° C., both coexisting in the intermediate range. Although the commercial product is hard and brittle, the pure metal seems to be ductile. In fact Zhemchuzhny, in Russia, was able to obtain ductile manganese and draw it to fine wires by the simple expedient of adding about 3 per cent. copper to the alumino-thermic product. Copper most probably brings the silicides, aluminides, nitrides and carbides present in the commercial product into a much less harmful form of distribution. One industrial use that can be foreseen for wrought manganese articles is as anodes for electrolytic processes in sulfate and nitrate solutions, particularly with high voltages. A practically insoluble skin of manganese peroxide is likely to form in such cases and an insoluble and strong anode material will be available.

The Kidd Creek orebody is a massive base metal sulphide deposit with surface dimensions of 168 m by 670 m. The steeply dipping ore- body has been evaluated to a depth of 1 524 m. To date, the mining of the orebody has been divided into three stages. The first stage of mining was an open pit operation which supplied ore from 1966 until 1977 when a depth of 219 m was reached at the widest or north end of the orebody. The second stage of mining, called No.1 Mine, was the development of an underground mine to replace the pit and recover the ore from the floor of the pit to a depth of 792 m. Development of the underground mine started in 1969. Full production of 273 000 tonnes per month was attained in 1977. The third stage of mining called No.2 Mine, was initiated to accommodate a production expansion and included the development of a second underground mining operation to recover the ore from the bottom of No.1 Mine, i.e. the 2600 level; to a depth as yet undetermined but most likely the 4600 foot level. Development of the No.2 Mine began in 1974. Full production of 91 000 tonnes per month will be achieved in 1982. The choice of the 2800 level as the partition between the two underground mines was based on the following factors: The 2600 level is the lowest level which can conveniently be mined through the No.1 Mine crusher on the 2800 level. Development and trial stoping methods for mining at depth could be evaluated in the 2600 to 2800 block utilizing the existing hoisting facilities of No.1 Mine. Early development of the ore in the 2600 to 2800 block would provide additional mill feed sooner than could be achieved by developing from No.2 Shaft. The underground mining plan then is to mine from the pit floor down to the 2600 foot level and at the same time mine from the 2800 level down to at least the 4600 foot level. PLANNING The Kidd Creek operations are designed to follow a logical mining sequence. The grade of ore supplied to the concentrator is the result of following the mining plan. The philosophy of mining has been to mine downward in horizontal slices. In the case of No.1 Mine the slices are 122 m thick while in No.2 Mine the slices will be 183 m thick. The point of this approach is to mine the pillars immediately after creating them rather than allowing them to stand, deteriorate and generate uncontrollable situations. Two types of ore are handled separately to optimize recoverable values in concentrates. The 'A' type ore is a copper zinc ore with some silver and little lead. The 'C' type ore is a zinc silver ore with some lead and copper

AT the Vesta mines of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. on the Monongahela River, 35 miles south of Pittsburgh, JCM Joy continuous miners and 6-SC shuttle cars are used for pillar extraction in the Pittsburgh seam. The entire output of the mine goes into coke production for blast furnace operation. Because this coal, which has high metallurgical qualities, is close to the place where it is ultimately used and because supplies with these properties are being rapidly depleted, complete recovery is essential wherever possible. With the introduction of the continuous miner into the Vesta mines, therefore, it was necessary to plan a project which would facilitate development and provide for future total recovery. Use of continuous miners under varying conditions has necessitated changes with regard to roof action, method of development, method of pillar attack, and innovations in mining. In the following pages these changes will be discussed. Prior to the introduction of continuous miners the Pittsburgh seam at the Vesta mines averaged 72 in. of mineable coal, overlain with 12 to 16 in. of draw-slate, which weathers on exposure to air and is not firm enough to be held in place. Immediately overlying the drawslate is a wild or rooster coal, very irregular in thickness, varying from 12 to 30 in. Above the rooster coal the strata consists predominately of shales or lime shales and sandstone. Just before the introduction of continuous miners in the Vesta mines, however, a definite change took place in the character of the roof structure overlying the coal seam, see Fig. 1. Thickness of laminated roof immediately overlying the rooster coal varies with localities and introduces a problem in roof control. In fact, a set of eight main entries being developed in Vesta NO. 4 mine entered an area with so difficult a roof structure that management considered abandoning the section altogether. In this locality the roof consisted of thin alternate layers of roof coals and shales, with an occasional irregular seam of slick slate, the whole being laced with slips, and the coal itself being cut by clay veins and spars. In an effort to overcome some of the difficulties, roof bolting was introduced in 1949. This made it possible to recover coal from an area which otherwise would have been economically unmineable. There have been very few roof bolt failures. When conventional machines were replaced by continuous miners there were changes in the development of butt entries. By these changes it was hoped: 1—to speed development, 2—to provide as much solid coal as possible for the machine on retreat, 3—to avoid the necessity of crossing entries already driven, 4—to facilitate ventilation, 5—to provide a roadway for shuttle car haulage which would eliminate the necessity of running through doors or curtains, 6—to provide better roof control by increasing the distance between the center lines of entries, and 7—to provide more coal when the machine was in position to load.

Most commercial alloys undergo changes in phase composition after casting. This is a natural result of the fact that the alloys are not in a state of phase equilibrium as cast and phase changes will therefore take place, with more or less rapidity, in an attempt to attain equilibrium. The practical aspect of aging in zinc-Alloy die castings concerns the changes in physical properties and in dimensions that may accompany aging phase changes. Harmful alterations have been reduced to a minimum and zinc-alloy die castings are being produced today that are so stable with respect to dimensions and physical properties that they are entirely suitable for most practical purposes1. In the first paper2 of this series, and in this paper, aging phase changes of zinc-alloy die castings have been investigated and the possible influence of these changes on dimensional changes of the castings has been evaluated and compared with the dimensional changes actually experienced. The change of dimensions has been selected for practical comparison in these papers because the effect of phase changes on the dimensions of a casting is directly calculable from X-ray crystal-analysis data of the phase structure. The die-casting alloys considered contain, in addition to zinc, 4 per cent of aluminum, about 0.03 per cent magnesium, and from 0 to 3 per cent of copper. It was shown in the former paper that the eutectoidal decomposition of the beta aluminum-zinc phase, while intrinsically capable of causing a considerable shrinkage, can have very little effect on the observed shrinkage of die castings because it takes place within a few days of aging, whereas the observed shrinkage continues for five weeks. It was therefore concluded that the other existing phase change, namely, the segregation of secondary phase from the zinc-base solid solution, must account for the major portion of the shrinkage.

In 1977, an article in World Mining1 reported a total of 2726 rotary blasthole drills in service. This figure included only those machines produced by three of the manufacturers building drills of this type. The total, therefore, is much higher. Rotary drilling in the mining industry is big business to the manufacturers and suppliers involved, and a significant cost item to mine operators. The time has come to take a hard look at rotary drilling technology with an eye to reducing costs by increasing drilling efficiency. The efficiency of any rotary drilling operation is best measured in terms of the rate of penetration achieved by the bit. In blast hole drilling, there are five factors which affect the rate of penetration. They are: (1) bit selection, (2) weight on the bit, (3) rotary speed, (4) hole cleaning, and (5) formation properties. Of these factors, all but one may be controlled by the operator. Looking at any one in detail may reveal possible improvements in the system. One of these factors -- proper hole cleaning - will be discussed in this paper. In order for a bit to perform at its maximum capability, each tooth or insert should strike fresh clean rock as it falls into its drilling position. If the tooth or insert lands on previously drilled cuttings, a major portion of the energy delivered to the bit is absorbed in redrilling this broken material. A major portion of the interest, therefore, should be directed to the proper cleaning of the bottom of the hole. In an in-depth study of the cleaning of large diameter holes, Allen2 reports that horizontal air velocities of 38.10 m/s are necessary to prevent the saltation of drilled cuttings on the bottom of the hole. The exact flow pattern on the bottom of the hole, however, is not generally known. The air leaves the bit through the jet nozzles and the mouths of the cones, but where it goes from there is uncertain. This problem should be investigated by the bit manufacturers because they can best utilize the results of such an investigation to provide a more effective product. Some work has been initiated in this area and competition will probably increase its intensity. Bailing velocity is the best criteria to measure the cleaning of the hole, including the bottom, and is the factor on which efforts toward improvement must be concentrated. The first consideration is "What should the bailing velocity really be?" In drilling deep holes for oil and gas, 15.24 m/s is the generally accepted figure. In blasthole drilling, the figures of 25.40 m/s for average rock to 35.56 m/s for iron ore were first mentioned by Capp3 in 1962. The recommendations are the same to this day. A number of questions could be asked in regard to the apparent disparity between these two sets of figures. Various investigators have derived formulas which support one or another of these criteria. A thesis on the subject was written by Alexander4 who derived a formula based on research which resulted in velocities in the lower end of the ranges quoted previously. He set out to compare this figure to laboratory tests and his tests indicated that the velocities given by the derived formula appeared to be high.1 Perhaps the best reason that the 25.40 to 35.56 m/s range has been used, is that these velocities seem to work. Below the accepted figures, low bit life and slow penetration rates occur. Above these figures, increasing amounts of abrasive wear on the drill pipe and stabilizers seem to appear. There is a fallacy to this entire approach, however. The entire velocity calculation is made using nominal bit and pipe sizes and compressor deliveries with no compensation made for losses in the system. Perhaps an examination of some of the things that are not presently considered could lead to some practical improvements in the operation.
