MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, In refining copper, the metal is melted down in a reverbera tory furnace in a more or less oxidizing atmosphere and then further subjected to an oxidizing smelting in order to eliminate the common impurities, most of which have a stronger affinity for oxygen than has copper. In these operations some of the copper is oxidized to cuprous oxide and dissolved by the metal bath. When the quantity of dissolved cuprous oxide has reached about 6 per cent, the metal is said to have been brought to " set-copper." A button-sample will show a depressed surface and, when broken, a single bubble at the apex of the depression; the fracture will be brick-red and dull. It is essential to carry the oxidation to this point in order to know that the impurities have been oxidized as far as it is possible under the given working-conditions. Nearly all the cuprous oxide of the set-copper is now reduced to the metallic state by poling, when "tough-pitch" copper will be obtained. A button-sample will show a flat surface. Upon breaking, it will be found that the former bubble has disappeared and that the fracture has become rose-colored and shows a silky luster. The quantity of cuprous oxide allowed to remain in the copper will vary with the impurities still present in the metal and with the degree of pitch that it is desired to reach. It is essential for the general physical and the mechanical properties of the resulting copper that such impurities as arsenic, antimony, bismuth, lead shall be present in the oxidized state, as they are

In the course of an examination of some of the California hydraulic mines in November last, I visited the property of the Gold Run Ditch and Mining Company, near Dutch Flat, Placer County. This is one of the most important and extensively worked mines in the district. The gold occurs in the characteristic blue gravel, which averages 175 feet in thickness, the lower 40-60 feet being made rip of cement gravel, which resists the action of water, and can only he loosened by blasting. The specimen which I have the pleasure of laying before the members was presented to me by Mr. I. L. Gould, the intelligent superintendent of the mines, who informs me that he found it in the old river channel, about twelve feet above the bedrock. The flattened water-worn nugget of gold, about the size of a kidney-bean, is imbedded in blue cement gravel, around which quartz has crystallized. When found the projecting portion of the nugget was enveloped in quartz, the core of gravel and gold having only been discovered after breaking the lump of quartz. On the quartz there is a shell of cement. The specimen is a remarkable confirmation of the theory of the deposition of quartz from solution. DISCUSSION. Dr. T. Diamond drilling has become a very important factor in mining. It is the most satisfactory method of obtaining proof of the existence of an orebody and of determining the character and extent of the body in measures where a core can be made. Large investments are based on the information obtained. The method of development, the mine and reduction plants, and subsidiary essentials established are often without other information. The Mond Nickel Co. has drilled about 50,000 ft. (15,240 m.) per yr. for sevéral years and has given considerable study to the question of improving the methods and of overcoming the limitations of this means of securing information. One of the main limitations of the diamond drill has been its inability to drill a straight hole. To depths of 1000 ft. (304 m.) the deflection is often not large but all holes tend to curve and take somewhat erratic courses. A hole running at a small angle to a fissure plane tends to run along the fissure. If the hole is at a large angle, the tendency is to penetrate the fissure plane at right angles. The face of the bit having one side in solid formation beyond the fissure, the other in the selvage of the fissure, tends to turn, the rods curving to the extent of their clearance in the hole. Usually rock measures have somewhat regular fissuring or strata and holes take somewhat similar courses, usually at right angles to the fissuring or strata. Excessive pressure or short or worn core barrels increase curvature. Slow speeds, correct feeds, sharp bits, and core barrels the full size of the bit, tend to decrease curvature but do not prevent it Curvature once started increases rapidly. The disappointments from crooked holes have been numerous. Discoveries have later been found to be on the properties of others. One Canadian company had a hole, supposedly discovering ore 300 ft. (91 m.) from old workings, unexpectedly turn in 8 ft. (2.4 m.) of wooden core from a timber in the old workings. EVER since the first installation of wet-washing methods of coal preparation, the removal of the water added by the washing process has created serious technical and operating problems. The rapid development and widespread adoption of wet washing has necessitated a corresponding development of dewatering methods and equipment. The amount of water retained by coal varies with the size of the coal. The moisture that is largely on the surface of the particles is easily shaken off coarse coal; thus coarse coal can be dried comparatively easily and quickly. Fine coal presents a larger surface area than does coarse coal, so its capacity for retaining moisture is greater. In fine coal, moisture below about 5 per cent is held between the coal particles and its removal is difficult. Draining and drying of the finer sizes is a major problem at many washeries. Two common problems of coal-washing practice that are intimately connected with dewatering and drying are the clarification of washery water and the prevention of stream pollution. The first field has been studied from many angles, including the use of coagulating and settling agents followed by vacuum filters to remove the solids, and the use of sludge tanks with dewatering screens incorporated therein. In many districts, the disposal of sludges into streams has been stopped by law. The lack of space for impounding sludges has created problems of disposal in other districts. Reduction in moisture means a saving in freight costs as well as the elimination of difficulties in unloading and storing. Excess moisture in coal causes it to freeze in localities where severe climatic conditions prevail. Excess water in coals to be used in the production of coke and manufactured gas has a chilling effect on the walls of the oven or retort. Dryness of coal is important in producing good briquettes. THE problem of sheet metal formability is one which has received a vast amount of attention during recent years. In spite of the great amount of study and experimental work which has been devoted to this problem, many of its fundamental aspects are still not well understood. No generally satisfactory test has been developed which is capable of providing a reasonably adequate evaluation of sheet metal formability, particularly in borderline cases. Anomalies persistently arise in which a lot of supposedly satisfactory material exhibits excessive breakage when formed. This lack of suitable technological tests greatly hinders the design of new parts and the substitution of new materials in parts of existing design, frequently necessitating considerable costly trial and error experimentation on an actual production basis. When, at the beginning of World War II, it became apparent that mass production methods of forming would be required in the aircraft industry if the large numbers of military aircraft needed were to be supplied, renewed attention was focussed on the problem of sheet metal formability. It was widely recognized that the formability requirements placed on sheet metals had been steadily increasing in severity through the years, especially as greater and greater emphasis was placed on streamlined designs with the resultant freer application of doubly curved surfaces. The recent advent of several new high strength aluminum alloys of more limited formability than some of the older alloys also served to emphasize the need for new approaches to the problem. It seemed evident that progress in the technology of sheet metal forming would depend to a great extent on the development of more reliable criteria for the evaluation of formability. Although the problem is admittedly very complex, the most logical approach appeared to be through studies of the fundamental material properties of sheet metals, especially under complex stress conditions simulating those prevailing in actual forming operations. Most previous investigations have failed to make full use of existing knowledge of fundamental material properties, and in many instances have attempted correlations with properties which are now recognized as being ambiguous in nature. This investigation was undertaken, therefore, with the aim of developing methods for the study of the flow and fracture of sheet metals under combined stresses, and of making use of such methods as might be developed in

IN recent years, zone melting1 has been applied extensively to the purification of metals having a very low vapor pressure.2-4 This note describes the zone melting of a high vapor-pressure metal, magnesium, where the melting takes place inside a refractory surface skin. The effects of zone speed and the number of passes of the molten zone on the purification have been determined and the effective distribution coefficients for the principal impurity elements were calculated. A schematic diagram of the zone-melting apparatus is given in Fig. 1. The Vycor tube containing the graphite boat with its magnesium charge (an extruded rod—3/8 in. in diam, 10 in. long) is pulled through the stationary furnaces. A molten zone approximately one-fourth the length of the charge is produced under each of the two central furnaces. Two grades of magnesium were studied—electrolytic magnesium and magnesium with a very low alloy content. The spectrographic analyses of these materials, within * 5 pct of the values stated, are given in Table I. Molten magnesium will vaporize severely if protected only by an inert atmosphere such as argon. Consequently an enveloping container is required. In zone melting, a rigid opaque container surrounding the charge is inconvenient because visual control of the zone length is prevented. A more satisfactory container is a strong flexible skin on the surface of the metal charge which is capable of supporting the molten zone. SO2 reacts with magnesium to form a thin coherent surface film of MgSO, and MgO. An atmosphere of SO, of commercial purity was maintained during the zone melting. Enough oxygen was present within the system and the commercial SO, for the satisfactory formation of the protective skin, so that any rupture of the skin during the zone refining was healed immediately.

SUCCESS of the dislocation theory in formulating the transitional lattice theory proposed by Har-greaves and Hill in 1929' is well established for low angle grain boundaries. The theoretical work of Burgersa and Read and Shockley,3 together with the experimental observations of Aust and Chalmers4 and Parker and colleagues,6 leaves little doubt as to the structure of grain boundaries with differences of orientations up to between 15" and 20". Beyond these angles, the structure of the boundary is not so clear, and is still a matter for conjecture. There have been notable experiments devised from which the data could be used to calculate energetics for possible arrangements of atoms in forming a large angle boundary.6 Most of these experiments deal with diffusion through and along the grain boundary. The recent work of Rhines and Cochart7 and Rhines, Bond, and Kissel18 was concerned with the relative movement of grains in aluminum bicrystals under constant tensile loads with their boundaries aligned at 45 " to the tension axis. The gliding along the grain boundary was cyclic and began after an incubation period. The velocity of gliding increased with the sum of the angular difference, 8, between the operative slip direction in the conjugate crystals and the angular difference between the active slip planes as measured between their traces upon the grain boundary. The initial gliding rate varied with temperature, and the logarithm of the average gliding taken over a considerable period was a linear function of the reciprocal of the absolute temperature: the slope gave an activation energy of 11,000 ±1,000 cal per mole. Since the rate of grain boundary shear is sensitive to the misorientation of the grains themselves, as shown by several workers,7,8 it is suggested that further work of this type might be fruitful in adding information regarding the behavior of boundaries under stress. The techniques devised by Chalmers" added impetus to the facility for observing grain boundary behavior, in that they provided a simple means for producing bicrystals of predetermined orientation so that the angle of the boundary could be controlled,

Since 1915 many papers and books have covered industrial applications of X-rays from various angles. Two of the more recent are a paper by Fink and Archer, which describes in detail the technique of radiography, and a paper by Clark2, which embraces the whole field of X-ray metallogmphy. This paper, therefore, is confined to work of the X-ray Laboratory of the Western Electric Co., which naturally divides into two categories: radiography and diffraction patterns of various types. Radiography Radiography is the field in which the application of X-rays has had most general appeal among the industries which produce or use metals and alloys. Equipment permitting the examination of heavy sections of metals less permeable than aluminum or other light alloys requires apparatus capable of generating hard X-rays over a considerable period of time. The equipment used in the work presented in this paper is practically identical with that described by Fink and Archer in their paper on radiography in industry and is easily capable of penetrating 1/8 in. of lead. Radiography is used in two major groups of problems: (1) in the development of cquipment and tools and (2) in studies of materials. So far there has been no instance in which the use of radiography for routine inspection is justified. This is partly due to the fact that the manufacture of telephone apparatus involves the production of many identical parts by standardized procedures and equipment that has had development and trial before being put on a regular production basis. It is during this stage of development of equipment and tools that radiography has been used to particular advantage.

Patentiometric model data have been obtained to estimate the effect of vertical fractures on the areas swept after breakthrough in water flooding and miscible displacement programs such as gas cycling where the mobility is near one, The data are presented for the case of the fire-spot pattern in which the cemer well is fractured various lengths and orientations, the data indicate that for 10-acre spacing, fractures extetidirrg over 1300 ft in either directior1 from the fractured well may re.srrlt in reductions in sweep efficiencics from 72 to approximately 34 per cent. However. the area swept after break through may be quite largr and only 10 or 12 per cent 1ess than would be obtained if the reservoir were trot fractured. For the specific case when the volume of fluid injected is equivalent to 100 per cent of the pattern vol-unie, the swent area may vary from 80 to 88 per cent, depending on the lenght of the fracture. The former value is that which occurs when the break through or sweep efficiency was orrly 34 per cent and the latter figrrre of 88 per cent is that which is obtained if the reservoir were unfrac-ttm'd. It is pointed out that although the sweep efficiency may he very low in vertically fractured five-spot patterrz.s, the area swept at low water-oil ratios may be only 5 to 10 per cent less than those achieved if the reservoir were unfractured. INTRODUCTION Since the initiation of commercial reservoir fracturing techniques it has been desirable to determine the effect of fractures on the areas swept after breakthrough. Most water flooding or gas cycling projects are continued for substantial periods after the brcakthrough of the injected fluid. Although the sweep efficiency serves as one criterion for rating various flooding patterns. the area swept after breakthrough for various water-oil ratios or percentage wet gas, if cycling. is of perhaps more importance than the sweep efficiency alone. Sweep efficiency data on the vertically fractured five-spot have been presented3. Previous work on the line-drive pattern has shown the effect of vertical fractures on the area swept after breakthrough for the case in which the distance between injection and producing wells divided by the distance between adjacent input wells was equivalent to 1.5 (see lief. 2). The data indicated that for the line-drive pattern it may be desirable to flood or cycle substantially perpendicular to the fractures in order to achieve the greatest recovery for the smallest volume of fluid injected. For this study the center well of a five-spot is assumed as the fractured well. All fractures were assumed to originate at this well and extend into the reservoir for various distances and orientations. All the fractures are straight and are of large permeability compared to the matrix proper. These data are presented to aid the engineer in estimating fractured five-spot pattern performance. ANALOGY The potentiometric model was used in making this study. The model used was 20 20 in. by approximately 1-in. deep. For certain portions of the study one corner of this model was considered to be an injection well and the opposite corner a production well. To simulate vertical fractures a copper sheet was soldered to the wire well and made to conform to the desired length and orientation. In other studies the same model was used except that the four corners of the model might be considered as the corner wells of a five-spot pattern and a fifth well was placed in the center of the model. The well placed in the center of the model was fractured. The total fracture length is L and the well spacing. d. The complimentary fracture angles will be obvious from Figs. 3 and 4. The data obtained on the potentio-metric model assumes the pay to be uniform and homogeneous, the mobility ratio is one, steady-state conditions exist and gravity effects arc neglected. The permeability of the fractures is very great compared to that of the matrix proper. The po-tentiometric model has been used widely both in water flooding and gas cycling projects, and may be used for miscible displacement; how-ever. it is believed that the poten-tiometric model data are more properly applicable to gas cycling than water flooding because the model as-

The internal friction of cold-worked titanium iso-thermally annealed at temperature below the recrystallization temperature was measured. The internal friction was calculated from the half width of a resonance curve of the specimen which was vibrated transversally by the electromagnetic method. The experimental results were as follows: 1) The specimens annealed for a long time at temperature below the re crystallization temperature after cold working have the strain-amplitude dependent internal friction. 2) The internal friction increased by the cold working was decreased during the isothermal annealing. The reason of decrease of the internal friction is considered to be caused by the annihi-lation of lattice defects. 3) There is a linear relation between logQt-1/Q0-1 and (1/T)2/3 below the recrys-tallization temperature, where Q0-1 is the internal friction standing 24 hr at the room temperature after cold rolling, Qt-1 is the internal friction annealed at T°K for t min. 4) The hardness of the cold-worked titanium does not change by the annealing at 300°C for a long time but decreases by annealing at 400ºand 460°C. METALS, when cold worked, show sharp changes in physical and mechanical properties' The internal friction of cold-worked metals increases sharply and has a maximum value1,2 connected with working de- grees. The increased internal friction of cold-worked metals is recovered by annealing. This phenomenon is the well known effect called Köster effect. The recovery of the internal friction occurs earlier than the changes in tensile properties, hardness, or X-ray diffraction, and is very sensitive to the structure of a metal. The mechanism of the recovery at a temperature lower than the recrystallization temperature is being considered variously by many investigators: there are such views as the annihilation of dislocations by smith,' the rearrangement of dislocations mentioned by Nowick,4 and interaction of dislocation with point defects.5 Smith and Nowick also considered the interaction but it is so difficult for them to explain the rearrangement mechanism systematically, it being not considered a special model; therefore, we do not explain it quantitatively. Experiments measuring the recovery of the internal friction of cold-worked metals were performed by Gordon and Nowick6 on NaCl, and by Smith on copper. In addition, there are many studies, particularly those of measurements on copper by other investigators. There are comparatively many investigations on aluminum and iron which are the cubic system,'-' but only a few on metals of the hexagonal system.10 In view of this, I investigated cph titanium at room temperature and measured the internal friction after annealing isothermally at temperature lower than the recrystallization temperature. MeltiXg procedures for most metals and alloys usually include some provision for the control of oxygen, since this element frequently has some undesirable effect on the properties of the metal or alloy concerned. In the melting of the various bronzes, this is especially true, since oxygen can be introduced into the melt in a number of ways, most of which are difficult to control. In making bronzes from virgin materials, oxygen is usually present in the commercial grades of copper used; electrolytic fire-refined copper ingots usually contain from 0.02 to 0.05 per cent oxygen. When ingot metal or scrap bronze is used in the charge, oxides are almost always present to some degree. Under certain melting conditions and in certain types of melting equipment the atmosphere over the metal may be highly oxidizing. This, of course, may be desirable in the melting practice used, but is certain to introduce appreciable amounts of oxygen into the melt, and that may not be entirely desirable. From the foundry viewpoint oxygen may have several harmful effects on bronzes. The formation of excessive amounts of oxides may produce drossy metal, which, in turn, means dirty castings and a potentially high rejection rate. It is claimed, too, that oxides in the metal may combine with hydrogen to form steam and thereby produce porosity in certain of the bronzes. The presence of certain refractory oxides, such as SnOz, may be undesirable from the viewpoint of making machining difficult, or as possible stress-raisers in the metal matrix. It is often said that excessive oxide present in the liquid metal makes the metal run sluggishly. Since it appears impractical to try to control the amount of oxygen introduced into the metal beyond taking the economical limit of precaution about charging dirty scrap, it would seem' that control of the oxygen content of the liquid metal offers the most promising approach to this problem. This might be done by using slags, or covers, or by the use of some element or compound added to the melt to remove oxygen preferentially. Most aspects of this problem have been considered and considerable work has been done along these lines. A reconsideration of the problem is indicated, however, by the controversial nature of the evidence at hand, especially on the possibility of using a chemical deoxidizer to control the oxygen content of bronzes. Choice of Deoxidizer The choice of the chemical agent selected as a deoxidizer would naturally depend first on the alloy in which it is to ~he used: in this particular case the alloy is Navy gun metal. Abstract-Activated carbon is a strong adsorbent for amyl xanthate, capable of removing from solution up to a quarter of its own weight in xanthate. In selective flotation systems where depression is unstable, separation efficiency increases with activated carbon additions. The improvements observed are brought about by two mechanisms. First, by removing stripped and residual collector ions from solution, competition between depressant and xanthate is reduced and depression is stabilized. In addition, the texture of the froth phase at high pine oil concentrations is modified by activated carbon such that better drainage between the air bubbles takes place, alleviating the mechanical entrapment of depressed mineral particles. In treating a bulk copper/lead concentrate produced from GECO ore, selectively between galena and chalcopyrite is increased when activated carbon is used. Although the rate of flotation of galena is marginally lowered by activated carbon, a small extension in the duration of flotation allows the lead recovery to increase by 19% at the same recovery of copper. An addition rate of 0.75 kg/ton (1.5 lb/st) of bulk concentrate is suggested as optimum from this testwork. However, the actual level wed in the mill is dependent upon the residual concentrations of collector and frother in the bulk concentrate Pulp.

Coal being essentially a complex conglomerate of plant remains that have undergone decay and interaction in varying degree, it is understandable that attack on the problem of its chemical constitution by normal chemical methods should have been attended by but slight success. The obvious method of fractionation by means of selective solvents has yielded a few results of some value. Thus it is known that from many, if not all, bituminous coals organic solvents extract small percentages of oxygenated compounds, which are generally assumed to have been derived from the original plant resins, though a more probable source would appear to be the glycerides and waxes of the plants. Organic solvents also extract small proportions of hydrocarbons, the origin of which is doubtfill. Of more importance is the action of such pseudo solvents as pyridine, which, in addition to their specific solvent action, have the power of resolving and simplifying a portion of the coal substance in a manner analogous to that by which water can disperse a hydrogel. Early work with pyridine indicated that coals are composed of two main classes of compounds: the one soluble in organic solvents, the other capable of being partly dispersed in pyridine. Recent work has shown that the dispersion is colloidal in character and that it may be accomplished by the use of solvents less active than pyridine, such as benzene or chloroform, provided that the temperature of extraction is raised or the coal has been suitably preheated. The action of reagents on coal has proved of little value in the past, but some insight into the constitution of coal has been given by regulated destructive distillation. Thus, it has been shown that coals behave on distillation as though composed of two main classes of compounds: the one readily decomposable at moderate temperatures (yielding mainly the paraffins), the other undergoing a preliminary early decomposition (with evolution of oxides of carbon and water) and yielding a residue that at higher temperatures breaks down, yielding much hydrogen.

A summary of the reservoir engineering and related geologic data on the Schuler field, Union County, Arkansas, is presented here in a manner intended to interest both technical and nontechnical readers. The Cotton Valley formation and the Reynolds oolite are oil-productive formations in the Schuler field, but the Jones sand pool, at a depth of 7500 ft., developed with 146 wells on zo-acre spacing, is the reservoir of principal interest. The Jones sand sandstone reservoir is an anticlinal trap typically gas-drive or depletion type in performance. The core analyses from 88 per cent of the wells drilled, together with drilling time and electric-log data, yield an accurate estimate of the "productive" sand thickness and its areal distribution over the pool. Accurate production statistics, monthly reservoir-pressure surveys, and bottom-hole sample analyses when correlated by the "material-balance equation" show unusually good agreement with that principle. Estimates of oil initially in place made by the material-balance method and the sand-volume method are in good agreement at 116 to rzo million barrels. The reservoir-pressure history of the pool reflects the reaction of a reservoir to production, proration and secondary-recovery practices. The cost of the extensive program of reservoir study in the Jones sand pool has been estimated, in order to emphasize the value derived from such an investment through better understanding of a reservoir's reaction to production practices. Unit operation of 140 of the 146 Jones sand wells made possible an effective unitized gas-injection pressure-maintenance program. Res-ervoir-pressure decline was arrested, natural flow was maintained, and pumping and lease equipment were conserved. An increased ultimate recovery of zo million barrels beyond the estimated 34 million barrels primary recovery is indicated at present. Extension of the Jones sand unit to include the undeveloped Cotton Valley formation will permit additional recovery of otherwise uneconomic reserves of oil through wells no longer required in the Jones sand operations. The Bassick mine, located six miles east of Silver Cliff, Colorado, has, ever since its discovery, been noted for peculiar features. Some of these characteristics exist in one or two other mines, while some are entirely unique. Among these peculiarities I have selected the most noticeable for treatment in this paper: First. The methods of deposition of the ores, which is not, as in ordinary veins, in strata or layers parallel to the walls of the fissure. The ores are arranged in concentric layers upon detached and abraded fragments of the walls; each ore in a separate stratum, and always in the same place in the series. Second. The characteristics of the fissure or opening; its shape and dimensions; its contents, or the vein-filling; and its verticality. Third. The peculiar products of the mine. The most noticeable of these products is charcoal, which is occasionally, and at long intervals, found throughout the ore-body, and in the surrounding conglomerate, from the surface down to the present depth, which is something over eight hundred feet. The existence of charcoal here is, as far as I know, the only instance of its discovery in mines of metallic ores. Fourth. Besides the charcoal, there are other products, in themselves not peculiar, whose manner of arrangement and composition are unusual. The mine is situated near the centre of a small rounded hill of eruptive trachytic rock and feldspathic conglomerate. The diameter of the base of this hill varies from 700 to 1200 feet, and its height is 200 feet above the general level. A cliff or outcrop of fine conglomerate is exposed on the southwest side of the hill. On the northeast it joins by an upward slope the fine-grained, hardened feldspathic paste of Mount Tyndall, which rises 600 feet higher, and of which the elevation containing the Bassick mine thus forms an arm. On visiting the mine, one's attention, whether he is a scientist or not, is immediately attracted by the unusual method of arrangement of the ore. It is seen to be disposed in concentric layers around fragments of trachyte. These fragments, of which each one con-

The selective action of oils for lustrous minerals was first disclosed by Haynes in 1860. In 1885, Miss Carrie Everson elaborated this idea and also disclosed the fact that acid increased the so-called selective action. Her patent called for oils, either animal, vegetal or mineral, also for an acid or salt. The process was tried out on a practical scale in Baker City and Leadville, in 1889, and failed: first, because, as has since been shown, of the unsuitability of the ore to flotation; and second, because the invention was too far in advance of the times. Then followed the Elmore brothers, first with their bulk oil processes and later with their vacuum method. The basic principles of oil flotation were undoubtedly covered by the above inventors, the work done since their time being merely a building up on ground work laid by them. Different kinds of oil, different quantities of oil, and all the varying degrees of agitation, were all exemplified and practiced by them in one phase or another, and the developments that have since been made are but elaborations of the fundamental principles laid down by Haynes, Everson, and the Elmore brothers. In 1902, the Potter-Delprat process was developed in Australia. In this process no oil was used, the mineral being raised by the generation of gas, brought about by the introduction of acid into the pulp. The mineral particles appeared on the surface of the separatory vessel, in the form of a scum or froth, buoyed up by minute gas bubbles attached to them. This no doubt first gave the suggestion of gaseous flotation. In 1902, also, Froment, an Italian, was granted a patent in which he combined violent agitation with oil and gaseous flotation, the gas being generated within the pulp, in much the same way as in the Potter-Delprat process. Poly crystalline silver chloride specimens having different micro structures were prepared by extruding monocrystals or precompressed powder at varying temperatures. Extrusion at high temperature (370°C) produced a Fully recrystallized equi-axed material which was brittle and fractured by simple cleavage below its transition temperature (60°C for notched specimens). Extrusion at low temperatures (down to -196°C) produced an extremely tough cold-worked material with grains elongated in the extrusion direction. This material fractured below its transition temperature (which varied from —20" to —200°C) by an intergranular mode. It is concluded that cold work increases the resistance to transgranular cleavage. Fracture is then de-flected to propagate intergranularly ouer surfaces making an angle with the tensile axis with a corresponding improvement in notch toughness. This deflection is greater for extruded powder than for extruded monocrystals because of the extremely elongated grain shape. PREVIOUS work1,' on the fracture properties of fully recrystallized silver chloride under notch impact conditions has indicated that the fracture behavior is rather invariant. Thus polycrystalline materials originating from a number of sources ranging from relatively pure Harshaw single crystals to commercial-purity powder and prepared by hot extrusion at 370°C all fracture by simple cleavage with a ductile-brittle transition at 60°C, see Fig. 1. This behavior is also typical for fully annealed single crystals and appears to be fundamental to silver chloride for the particular loading conditions and notch configuration adopted. One way in which this characteristic fracture behavior can be modified is by the dispersion of alumina particles in the silver chloride matrix.' Then, particularly when the alumina particles are in the shape of spheres, the duc tile-brittle transition is much less sharply defined and occurs over a range of temperature, the transition temperature is lowered considerably and the fracture mode changes from simple cleavage to a fibrous or shear mode. The reason for this change is believed to be partly due to the nucleation of cavities in the region of the dispersed alumina particles which influences the state of stress locally and the distribution of plastic constraint at the root of the notch. It is emphasized however that this is not the sole factor responsible for the increase in toughness. In extruded materials it is reasonable to expect that the resultant grain size, texture, and the residual cold work will be influenced by the presence of a dispersed phase. The present experiments were initially designed to determine the extent to which cold work influenced the fundamental ductile-brittle transition temperature and fracture mode of silver chloride. They were stimulated by the discovery that silver chloride could be extruded at temperatures as low as -25°C when commercial-purity powder was used and as low as -196°C when single crystals were used. This working temperature was far below that previously used (370°C) and it was found that such extruded material was exceedingly tough. The reasons for the enhanced toughness and its relation to the previous work on silver chloride-alumina compacts will be discussed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials Used.
