The successful commercial production of helium during the last few years has added greatly to its scientific interest. When the quantity of an element available for experimental purposes increases within a few years by 200,000 per cent., both public and scientific interest in the element are greatly stimulated. Before the war, probably, there was not more than 10 or 15 cu. ft. of helium in existence. The larger part of this was owned by Prof. Kam-merlingh Onnes, and was used by him in connection with his low-temperature work at Leiden. By experimental work during the war and immediately afterwards, the Canadians, under Prof. J. C. McLennan, produced about 60,000 cu. ft. of helium of various grades of purity. Up to Dee. 1, 1921, when the plant at Fort Worth was shut down because of lack of funds, there had been produced during the experimental work by the U. S. Government, during the war and afterwards. 2,300,000 cu ft. of helium averaging between 92 and 95 per cent. purity. After the new appropriation was made in 1922, the production plant was again started and at the time of writing was making about 15,000 cu. ft. of helium a day. Only three of the five units were being operated because of the inability to get sufficient gas to run at full capacity. The gas supply is owned by two companies and on account of a disagreement between them, it has been possible for some time to get gas from only one. It is expected that when all five units are running steadily, the daily production will be between 30,000 and 40,000 cu. ft. of gas averaging from 93 to 95 per cent. purity. The method of making oxide of zinc direct from the ore was invented and developed at the works of The New Jersey Zinc Co. at Newark in the middle of the last century. The process was invented by Burrows, who had not the ability, financial or technical, to work out the details necessary to make it of commercial value. This was done by Col. Wetherill, whose name is commonly attached to this process. The grate bars used are also frequently called Wetherill grates, which is a misnomer because they were in common use for boiler firing at the time, and he never claimed their invention. The invention of the process was due to the efforts of The New Jersey Zinc Co. to find a profitable means of working the ores from Franklin and Sterling Hill, N. J. These are a mixture of franklinite, willemite, and zincite, containing about 20 per cent. of zinc. The first attempts were to make spelter, which were not successful, owing to the low grade of the ore and the fusibility of the residue. Failing in this, the next attempt was to make oxide in large muffles and reverberatory furnaces. This succeeded, although the cost of operation was high, the recovery low, and the quality of the product uncertain. In 1855, the new process was patented and has been in successful operation ever since. Essentially, the process is to spread a mixture of coal and ore on a body of burning coal on a perforated grate, and blow an excess of air through the grate. The zinc is reduced in contact with the coal, volatilized and burned by the excess of air in the upper part of the furnace and in the flues. It is then carried to the bag rooms by the excess air and products of combustion which are foreed through the flues by fans. In its main features, the process is the same today as at the time of its invention, but the details have been so modified that it would hardly be recognized by its originators. OrEs The process is applicable to all the oxidized ores of zinc and to roasted sulphides, provided the gangue is not so fusible as to leave a residue that is impervious to the blast. Single crystals of Pbl-xSnxTe have been grown from nonstoichiometric, cation-rich melts with the objective of producing as-grown, bulk material containing carrier concentrations ranging from 1016 per cu cm to 1018 per cu cm. Three specific crystal composi-tions were investigated in detail; x = 0.00, 0.10, and 0.17. Pull rates of from I to 3 mm per hr were used. Single crystals were successfully pulled from melts containing as little as 30 at. pct Te. Hall coefficients, resistivities, and carrier mobilities of these materials were determined. The relationship between the composition of the melt and the carrier concentration in the as-grown crystal has been studied for the three crystal compositions of interest. BULK single crystals of Pb,-,Sn,Te have previously been grown from stoichiometric melts.1,2 Such crystals are p-type and have relatively high carrier concentrations ranging from -9 x 1018 per cu cm for PbTe to -8 x l020 per cu cm for SnTe at 77°K. These carrier concentrations result from deviations from stoichiometry (lead vacancies) in the as-grown crystals. Since lower carrier concentrations are desirable for electrooptic device applications, these crystals are usually subjected to long-term, isothermal anneals.' This paper reports on the growth of Pbl-xSnxTe single crystals from nonstoichiometric melts with the primary objective of producing as-grown material containing relatively low (1016 to 1018 per cu cm) carrier concentrations and also reports on the general characteristics of these crystals. The phase relationships in the Pbl-xSnxTe systems are such that materials solidifying from nonstoichiometric, cation-rich melts will have smaller deviations from stoichiometry than materials grown from stoichiometric melts. Fig. 1 is the T-x phase diagram for PbTe in the vicinity of the stoichiometric composition.3 A crystal grown from a stoichiometric melt will solidify at a melting point maximum at which the solid will contain -0.5002 atom fraction of tellurium. PbTe single crystals grown in our laboratories from stoichiometric melts have carrier concentrations of 9 x 10" per cu cm, indicating that the excess tellurium in the crystals is as expected from this phase diagram. However, growth of PbTe from a lead-rich melt will result in material having a more nearly stoichiometric composition. Although the addition of Sn to the melt shifts the solidus curve further toward the tellurium-rich side,4 the general discussion given for PbTe applies to the Pbl-xSnxTe systems as well. EXPERIMENTAL Single crystals of Pb1-xSnxTe have been grown in our laboratories from nonstoichiometric, cation-rich melts using the Czochralski technique and boric oxide liquid encapsulation. The details of the growth apparatus and growth technique have been reported in a previous paper on growth of these alloys from stoichiometric melts.2 In the present study, three specific crystal compositions were investigated in detail; x = 0.00, 0.10, and 0.17. Growth of alloy crystals from nonstoichiometric melts requires considerable care, and good quality single crystals were obtained in this study only by optimizing the mechanical and thermal stability of the growth system and by using pull rates of from 1 to 3 mm per hr (Pbl-xSnxTe crystals are easily pulled from stoichiometric melts at rates of from 5 to 10 mm per hr). The liquid encapsulation technique was found to yield near-ideal conditions, since the B2O3 layer increased the thermal stability at the growth interface, permitted easy attainment of near-ideal thermal gradients, and dampened vibrations at the melt surface. The hygroscopic character of the B2O3 was a slight problem and vacuum heat treating was necessary to completely remove the water from the boric oxide. During initial growth, the seed diameter was reduced and a narrow neck (1 to 2 mm diam) of several millimeters length was grown. The South Works high-tonnage billet caster was started in late March 1971, with the first heat being successfully cast to completion. Currently, over 31,500 tons per month are being produced. U. S. Steel designed and built this caster with the objective of producing quality-steel billets for critical bar, rod, and wire applications. The essential design parameters were based on studies conducted on the Research Laboratory's pilot caster, also located at South works. 1,2,3)* The caster is a four-strand, straight-mold machine that produces 7.5-inch- square billets at rates exceeding 300 tons per hour. An in-line-reduction mill reduces each strand to either 6-inch-, 5-inch-, or 4-inch-square billets.

Coal, like most other minerals, only exceptionally occurs in a sufficiently pare state to he directly available for general manufacturing purposes. And even where this is the case, the small coal or slack is usually more impure than the lump coal, as the slate, clay, etc., from the roof and bottom of the vein become mixed with it in the handling it undergoes. These impurities often exceed ten or more per cent. in addition to the impurities of the coal itself. The most common impurities of the coal are slate, or shale, clay, and sulphur. The latter occurs in different forms, but moat frequently as bisulphide of iron, or iron pyrites, and as sulphate of lime, or gypum. In both cases the impnrities add greatly to the amount of ash, and where they are present in considerable quantities the raw coal, and still more the coke made from it, is unfit for the manufacture of iron. Coke will coutain on an average at least fifty per cent. more ash and sulphur than the ram coal from which it is made. To the manufacturer of iron every additional per cent. of ash which his coal or coke contains is a source of additional expense, seemingly small, and yet very important in the aggregate. In the blast-furnace, for instance, the ash must be heated up to the melting-point, and, since it is composed largely of refractory substances, the consumption of carbon in melting it will be equal to at least one-half of its weight; that is, a certain part of tile coke is consumed for the melting and fluxing of the ash and is lost. Besides this, it is well enough known to the iron-master that coke containing lees ash makes the &lag or cinder more liquid and less incliner1 to stick to the walls of the furnace. Fuel containing much sulphur produces generally a white iron, poor in carbon, while from the same ore arrd flux, with a pure fuel, a good foundry iron might be obtained. NEXT to the metal itself, molding sand is the most important raw material used in the manufacture of steel castings. There are no accurate, figures available but probably it would be safe to say that the average steel foundry uses approximately 1000 lb. of new molding sand per ton of castings produced. With untreated sands costing from two to four dollars (in some extreme cases it may run as high as eight or ten dollars) per ton delivered at the foundry siding, molding sand is an important item in the cost of making castings, and any information that may help to reduce this sand consumption should be of interest to the industry.

Limited experimental data and a critical review of the literature are given to indicate that the true equilibrium distribution of manganese between carbon-saturated iron and blast-furnace type slags has not yet been satisfactorily established as a function of the composition, temperature, and pressure of the system. THE distribution of manganese between carbon-saturated iron and blast-furnace type slags has been studied by a number of investigators.1-7 Generalization of the results of these works indicates that the weight percent distribution ratio, (%Mno)/[%Mn], decreases with increasing temperature and slag basicity, in accord with thermodynamic data and practical observation. However, where comparisons among these studies can be made for similar slag compositions and temperatures, the reported values of the manganese distribution ratio are discordant. The variations are attributed to failure of the experimenters to bring their systems completely to equilibrium with graphite and CO at 1 atm, as judged by departures from silicon equilibrium. Even in the most recent work,5-7 this problem was recognized but the authors made the questionable assumption that equilibrium could prevail for manganese distribution even though other reactions were still in progress. Manganese equilibrium values for three particular slag compositions were required incidental to a kinetic study8 and were determined experimentally. Special pains were taken to approach concurrent equilibrium with respect to silicon. Although the results were not completely definitive, they indicate that the true manganese equilibrium distribution ratios are lower than have heretofore been reported. The data are presented together with a brief commentary on the literature to suggest the need for further work in this area. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Equilibrium runs were carried out in a stationary, induction-heated graphite crucible closed by a graphite lid and flushed continuously by a slow flow of carbon monoxide at 1 atm pressure. Temperature was controlled manually within ±3 deg C with the aid of immersed thermocouples in mullite tubes protected against slag attack by graphite sleeves. The desired temperature was established by a calibrated Pt vs Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple and control was then maintained using a more stable W-Mo couple. Runs were made at 1500º and 1575ºC for durations of 7.5 to 10.5 hr. The charges were calculated to yield 400 g of metal and 100 g of slag. The apparatus described in this paper was designed by the writer, in the year 1869, for use in the laboratory of the " American Silver Steel Works," at Bridgeport, Conn., where only the vacuum-pump was erected ; but on two subsequent occasions I have had the combined vacuum-pump and table-blowpipe constructed as represented in the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a general elevation of the apparatus, the air-chamber being sectioned vertically; Fig. 2, a plan of the air-chamber; Fig. 3, a vertical sectiotnal elevation of the vacuum-pump, the section being on line C L), of Fig. 4, which is a horizontal section on line A B, of Fig. 3. The vacuum-pump is constructed of copper, and consists of a vacuum-chamber, E, supported upon the upper expanded end of a vertical pipe, Q. The vacuum-chamber is provided with four nozzles, C, F, I, D (Fig. 4), two of which are shown in section at A, B (Fig. 3). Passing vertically through the centre of the vacuum-chamber E, is seen the water-supply pipe P, whose lower extremity incloses an internal pipe p, which is supported, and placed in communication with the vacuum-chamber E, by means of the two elliptical nozzles n, n. The upper part of the pipe p is closed by a conical cap, and its lower end is in the same plane with the extremity of the watersupply pipe P, within which it is placed. To properly account for the various characteristics of drilling muds obtained in different areas and geological horizons, it is necessary to study the composition of the mud from a chemical and physical standpoint as determined by the proportions and activities of the various solid contituents that are present in various states of division. Briefly summarized, science teaches that there are three states of division into which these solid constituents or particles may be grouped: namely, the suspended state, the individual particles of which are known as suspensoids; the colloidal state, in which the individual particles are termed colloids; and the crystalloidal state, wherein the individual particles are held in true solution and are termed crystalloids. The suspended state is one wherein the particles are fairly large and are present as molecular complexes, having none of the properties of colloids or crystalloids. Since matter varies in physical character and in chemical activities with its state of division, these coarser suspensoids do not themselves materially affect the physical or chemical properties of the solution in which they are suspended. On the other hand, they are distinctly detrimental in drilling muds and it is desirable that they be removed. Under the general classification of suspensoids are included sand, gravel and cuttings which contribute nothing to the colloidal stability or other desirable properties of the drilling fluid. As the state of division approaches but does not reach a molecular simplification, the term "colloidal state" is used in describing this condition. The colloidal state arises when one form of matter is in a very fine state of division and is distributed through a second phase. The material in the finely divided state is called the dispersed phase, while the liquid in which it is dispersed is called the dispersive phase. These particles of matter are in a colloidal state and will not settle out from the dispersive phase so long as colloidal conditions are stable. Moreover, they exhibit the property of having an oscillating movement around a central position in solution (the Brownian movement). In the third state of division, the crystalloidal state, the individual particles are held in true solution and are usually present as single molecules or ions. Is an accurate measurement of the efficiency of a screen under a given set of operating conditions valuable? If so, what is the efficiency of a screen and how can it be measured? Sizing, especially of the finer sizes of material, has increased in importance in the development of flow sheets as a result of the perfecting of the rapid vibrating screens. More consideration should be given screens in the preparation of ball-mill feed, where they permit the admission of a dryer feed than the classifier. Where possible, the introduction of a screen ahead of the primary ball-mill, and the diverting of ore below, say, 4 mm. to a secondary mill, might result in a greater overall economy because of the thicker feed and the better adjustment of crushing media and mill operation to the reduction demanded. With the present trend back toward a combination of gravity methods and flotation, rather than flotation alone, the accurate, economical sizing possible with the new screens makes fine jigging a method to be considered. W. o. Borcherdtl and John Bland= discuss the screening problem and also the value of close sizing in the concentration of some of the rare-metal ores. If a screen is to be used, it should be selected in competition with others; other things being equal, that screen which makes the cleanest oversize should be preferred. The quality of the screening and the tons handled per dollar together determine the choice and, therefore, both of these must be accurately measured if a correct decision is to be reached. Too frequently in mill design, the capacity has been considered almost to the exclusion of the completeness with which the undersize is separated from the oversize. Coal mining in the State of Washington offers many interesting problems for the mining engineer, due to the varied physical conditions occurring in different fields, and often in the same mine. The different coal seams worked in the same mine commonly require different mining and transportation methods for economical operation. The coal measures have inclinations ranging from 5' to vertical, and in the same mine the dip of the coal may vary from 30' to 50 . In all fields, the seams are extensively faulted, folded, and sheared. The quality of the coal produced ranges from brown lignite to bituminous coking coal, the following being typical analyses: Very little of the coal contains as much as 0.75 per cent. sulfur. The brown lignites occur mostly in Lewis and Thurston Counties, and as a rule are very cheaply mined. This coal has been successfully used in locomotives of the Oregon & Washington Railroad, after equipping them with specially designed fireboxes. The sub-bituminous coals occur in all the coal-mining counties. Their cost of production varies widely, according to the character of the formations, the pitch, and the wall conditions. This makes a fairly good steam coal, but the lump is used mostly for domestic trade, after grading into lump, nut, and pea. The coking coal is used for making coke, and for locomotive and other boiler fuel. It yields a strong metallurgical coke, quite high in ash, though seldom exceeding 18 per cent. ash. This paper reviews recent developments in the application of classification practice to the origination of fine-grinding flow sheets and traces the history of the mechanical classifier from its initial application for separating cyanide process sands and slimes down to its present six or more distinctly different applications at copper concentrators; it undertakes to show also, by reference to diagrammatic fine-grinding flow sheets and accompanying operating data from nine copper concentrators in western North America, the advantages gained from improved classi-ficiation flow sheets at these properties in terms of reduced grinding costs, improved flexibility of operation or increased recovery. Comparison is only made between different fine-grinding flow sheets at a given plant and no attempt is made to compare different concentrators, on account of ore variations and differences in metallurgical objectives sought,. The adoption of the flotation process in recent years, and especially the development of selective flotation, has brought a demand for much finer grinding than formerly. This has caused much thought to be given to grinding efficiency, and today there is hardly a mill where the grinding flow sheet is not under close study and subject to frequent changes. When closed-circuit grinding was introduced into metallurgy some years ago, its value was recognized at once, and since then the combination of mills and classifiers has been regarded and operated as a grinding unit. Apart from variations in both the grinding and classifying elements of this unit, there have been many variations in grouping tried by different mills to suit varying conditions of ore and plant limitations. Although operators feel that in most cases their present flow sheets are on trial, and the data on present work are often incomplete, we have felt that a discussion of the progress that has been made and an endeavor to show present trends and their results should be of use to the profession. We have therefore prepared flow sheets of some of the larger mills with which we have been in contact and present them with available data as to their results, in the hope that they may be of service now rather than later when practice may have become more standardized and more complete records and analyses have been made. A simulation model has been developed to find out the possibility of improving the industrial closed-circuit wet grinding operations. The model involves a continuous tumbling mill in combination with a hydrocyclone to recycle the oversize material back to the mill. The mill is described by the breakage, i.e. the selection and the distribution, functions, co-ordinated with the diffusional mixing along the axis. The cyclone classifier is characterized by the partition function with allowance for the non-selective separation of part of the feed material into the underflow. The computer program developed incorporates an interactive capability to modify the operating conditions of the system whenever needed. The results are analysed for the operational conditions characterizing the mill and the classifier. Besides the steady state conditions some observations are also made about the dynamic responses of the closed circuit grinding system.

Experience has shown that there are some factors connected with the drying of fine washed coal that are not present in drying of slack coal as normally practiced at cement kilns or pulverized coal plants. It is the purpose of this paper to show some of these variations as they have been encountered under actual operation. The Champion No. 1 cleaning plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. uses the wet system of cleaning coal. The plant is equipped to produce commercial sizes or mixtures, the primary sizes being plus 6 in. and 4 by 6 in., which are hand-picked. Minus 4-in. sizes are all cleaned by the wet process. To produce a commercial product as free of moisture as possible, the washed coal is first passed over sizing and dewatering screens, then each size except the — ?-in. coal is conveyed to loading booms by slow-moving draining conveyors. As the +?-in. sizes are not heat-dried, no data will be given, as it is the purpose of this paper to describe the heat drying of — ?-in. coal as practiced at the Champion No. 1 plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Company. To fully appreciate the conditions, it must be remembered that the — ?-in. product is now shipped at a lower moisture content than when received from the mine. The incoming coal in the — ?-in. size will average 5 per cent. moisture and the shipped product 3 per cent. moisture. This is a case where a wet process gives a reduction of both ash and moisture in the fine sizes. The shipped product, therefore, is more uniform in all characteristics, and uniformity of product is the most important single factor in coal preparation. The 0 by ?-in. coal is first dewatered on slow-moving continuous bucket dewatering elevators, running at the rate of 40 ft. per minute, with 48-in. perforated buckets with ¼ by 1½-in. slots, spaced ? by 2?-in. centers staggered. The moisture in the coal discharged from the elevators runs 20 to 28 per cent., depending on the fineness of the product. The discharge from the dewatering elevator is further drained on a drag-type conveyor equipped with ½-mm. wedge wire screen. THAT colleges and technical schools constitute a vital factor in our industrial system is being realized more and more of late years. Consequently it is desirable that there should be a constant interchange of ideas between the 'school and the industries and that there should be a more intimate contact between the student and his future employer. Business and industry demand certain proficiencies and qualifications of the student and he, in turn, sees certain rewards and advantages in the industry. . In a meeting of this kind, whose primary purpose is to promote a greater intimacy between the students and those men who are active in the mining profession, it is quite fitting that each state his demnds upon the other in order to establish a common understanding. It is probable that a student, not being conversant with actual conditions in the industry, may be unfair in what he asks of his employer. Therefore criticism, constructive or other- wise, is not only accepted, but is invited.

R. H. Sweetser.—Mr. Reinartz spoke of slag containing 18 per cent FeO. I think he expressed the iron as oxide. I should like to ask at what point, in iron contents, it is usual practice to quit sending that open-hearth slag to the blast furnace? L. F. Reinartz.—NO problem is involved in disposing of open-hearth slag to our blast furnaces because, on account of the grades of iron and steel made by our company, the iron oxide in the slag is sufficiently high to make it very acceptable to the blast-furnace operator. I have been told that if the total iron oxide in the slag is under 18 to 20 per cent, it is not economical to use such slag in a blast furnace. J. T. I have been told, on several occasions, by other open-hearth men, that the sulfates will be reduced and increase the sulfur content of the metal. We have never found any pyrite in our limestone. A. A. L. Feild,‡ Baltimore, Md.—What is Mr. Reinartz's theory as to the effect of silica in the slag on the iron oxide content of the metal? L. F. Reinartz.—I have no particular theory as to the effect of silica in the slag on the iron oxide content of the metal. I know from practical experience that it does have an influence on reduction of iron oxide in the metal. We know that if the silicon content of the charge, and, therefore, the silica of the slag is increased, the iron oxide in the slag will be decreased. Based on Dr. Herty's work, we assume that the iron oxide is correspondingly decreased in the metal. C. H. Herty, JR.,§ Bethlehem, Pa.—In the theory of iron oxide control, we have tackled the matter from the physical standpoint, rather than the chemical standpoint or from the slag itself, and we worked on the basis that the change in iron oxide content in a slag—that is, whether the slag increases or decreases in iron oxide—is due to the simple fact that if you put more iron oxide into the slag from the gas than you put oxygen from the slag into the metal, the slag must increase in iron oxide;

R. H. Sweetser.—Mr. Reinartz spoke of slag containing 18 per cent FeO. I think he expressed the iron as oxide. I should like to ask at what point, in iron contents, it is usual practice to quit sending that open-hearth slag to the blast furnace? L. F. Reinartz.—NO problem is involved in disposing of open-hearth slag to our blast furnaces because, on account of the grades of iron and steel made by our company, the iron oxide in the slag is sufficiently high to make it very acceptable to the blast-furnace operator. I have been told that if the total iron oxide in the slag is under 18 to 20 per cent, it is not economical to use such slag in a blast furnace. J. T. THE burden a man can endure depends on its magnitude and the number of tunes it is applied, as well as on many other factors. The resisting power of steel likewise is dependent on many factors. The maximum load it can support indefinitely is much less than its possible momentary burden. A light load straining the metal far within its elastic limit, if repeated indefinitely, ruptures the metal. The magnitude f the stresses that may be alternately applied and removed without rupturing the material depends on the number of repetitions of the cycle; the intervening periods of rest; the thermal, electric, and magnetic conditions, as well as the presence of secondary stresses. While we are unable to formulate the law between the magnitude f repeated stresses necessary to produce rupture and the length of time during which these alternating stress may be applied before rupture, my experience is that the time increases as the magnitude of the force decreases, according to a law which, to a first approximation, is exponential. In other words, F = Ce-t where F = magnitude f alternating stresses; = time for which stresses are continued; C = constant, which' depends on the conditions under which the operations are carried out. It is quite probable that the same type of law holds for the magnitude of a continuous force and its duration. When a rod of steel is subjected to the blows of a drilling hammer several things happen. First, one end is struck by the hammer and the other end is driven into the rock, thus causing a bodily displacement of the entire material of the steel drill. The greatest stresses involved in this bodily displacement are located at the two ends of the steel and manifest themselves by the distortion of these parts. Second, after the blow has been delivered the steel drill, due partly to its own resiliency and partly to the resiliency of the rock, experiences a vibratory motion as a whole, this motion is quite similar to the bouncing of a rubber ball thrown violently upon a smooth pavement. Third, the free vibration of the drill is determined only by its own natural period of vibration. This motion involves all the characteristics f any vibrating body emitting sound.
