It is pointed out that the application of capillary pressure curves obtained by drainage or desaturation processes to the calculation of the fluid distribution in interphase transition zones involves a number of difficulties; namely: (I) the development of very low nonwetting phase saturations appears to be in contradiction with the lack of mobility of such distributions indicated by permeability-saturation curves, (2) dispersed nonwetting phases are thermodynamically unstable, and (3) discontinuous phases should not be subject to hydrostatic equilibrium requirements. While these difficulties could be obviated by assuming that the capillary pressure drainage curve has an initial horizontal segment, they are automatically circumvented by application of the imbibition capillary pressure curve to the lower part of the water-oil transition zone. These generally show zero displacement pressure at only partial wetting-phase saturations. The countercurrent upward flow of oil into the main oil-saturated pay and downward drainage of water also suggests that wetting phase imbibition processes will control the saturation distribution immediately above the water-saturated section. Similar considerations, with a generalized interpretation of the apparent wetting-phase behavior of the oil and gas phases, provides a basis for constructing the curve for fluid distribution in the oil-gas transition zone. In the transition zones so derived, the oil begins with a nonvanishing saturation at the water-oil contact and terminates with a similar saturation at the top of the gas-oil contact. The gas-oil transition zone begins with an equivalent nonvanishing gas saturation. Introduction It has been a common assumption for some years that the nature of the fluid dis- tribution in virgin reservoirs, and in particular that in the transition zones between the oil and water and between the oil and gas sections, can be computed by a simple application of capillary pressure data. The results of such calculations appear to have been first reported by Leverett.' The latter, however, indicated only the numerical values of the parameters used in the computations, without explicitly describing the procedure. Leverett's illustrative calculated transition zones are reproduced in Fig I. Although no critical study of the apparently obvious method of calculation has been published, one cannot proceed very far in the computation without encountering some rather fundamental questions not yet answered in the literature. This paper is not written under the pretense that the whole transition-zone problem has been fully and satisfactorily solved. Its purpose, rather, is to discuss suggestions for its treatment, much of it admittedly hypothetical, and emphasize the nature of the uncertainties arising therein; for the literature, as now available, gives little indication that there are any problems still outstanding. The Transition-zone Equation The basic equation, which presumably gives directly the fluid distribution without recourse to any further consideration, is: Ap = (r1 - r2)gh [1] where r1, y2 are the densities of the two contiguous fluids, h is the height above the "capillary-free" zone of complete saturation with fluid I, g the acceleration of gravity, and Ap is the capillary pressure across the average interface at the height

EXCLUDING top-slicing, and sublevel caving, large production caving methods may be divided into two general classes, the branch raise, or undercut caving method, and the combined shrinkage and caving method, each of which has a number of variations, the result of continual efforts towards obtaining lower costs and better extraction, by the introduction and substitution of minor improvements and modifications. EARLY CAVING METHODS Present caving methods are the cumulative result of developments covering a period of many years, with the most rapid growth during the past 15 years. They originated, presumably, from early English stoping methods, and, as far as is generally known, were first introduced in the Michigan iron district. They have had their greatest expansion and application in the large low-grade porphyry coppers. In their present form, they are probably a development and combination of sublevel caving and shrinkage (back-stoping on ore) with gravity handling of broken material. Sublevel caving, as practiced in the Michigan district today, is a combination of drift, or crosscut, mining, with top-slicing, and caving, supplemented by later refinements in the shape of mechanized handling of broken ore. A height of anywhere from 16 to 20 ft. is generally taken, and the ore is drilled and blasted along the drift or crosscut for half this height (say 8 to 10 ft.), after which the upper 8 to 10 ft. caves and breaks of its own weight, with comparatively little assistance from drilling. ACCORDING to recently published statistics, it is predicted that as much oil must be produced during the next 16 years as has been produced during the past 75, in order to satisfy the high rate of consumption of petroleum products. During 1934, over 17,000 oil wells were completed in the United States, and it is expected that over 20,000 additional wells will be drilled during the current year. Were it not for the remarkable progress made during recent years in the improvement of drilling technique and in the development of equipment used in the production phase of the oil industry, it is doubtful whether sufficient oil could be produced to meet present requirements. A few years ago, wells seldom were deeper than 3500 to 4000 ft., owing to the limitations of the drilling methods and equipment employed. Today, however, through the application of scientific drilling methods and the adaptation of modern equipment and improved materials, many wells range from 6000 to 8000 ft, in depth, and a few recent completions exceed 10,000 feet.

This Paper Presents an approximate analytical solution to the problem of the pressure distributions arising from the production of a compressible liquid in a partially penetrating well. The limits of validity of the approximation are discussed and it is shown that the basic approximation is the same as that used in previous numerical of the problem. The variation in pressure at the production well with time for different penetration ratios is investigated and is shown to agree with previous work. The solutiOns are used to assess the effects of partial penetration at large distances from the well and at the wellbore itself. In the latter case the effects of anisotropy are also studied for constant, but unequal, horizontal and vertical permeabilities. It is 'uggested that measurements of the Pressure drawdown below the producing interval in a well should give some indication of a thickness-vertical permeability product for the formation; this would chmacterize the effectiveness of the formation below the producing interval. INTRODUCTION In many oil and gas reservoirs the producing wells are completed as partially penetrating wells; that is, only a portion of the pay zone is perforated. This may be done for a variety of reasons, but the most common one is to prevent or delay the intrusion of unwanted fluids into the wellbore. This paper studies the effects of partial penetration on the pressure distribution resulting from the production of a compressible liquid at a constant rate. To simplify the mathematical analysis the case of a single well located in an infinite reservoir of constant thickness is considered, and it is assumed that this well is perforated over an interval adjacent to the upper (or lower) impermeable boundary of the formation. A well producing from an arbitrary interval within the bulk of the formation could be treated in a similar way, but this action would merely add to the complexities of the solution and contribute little to the appreciation of the over-all effects of partial penetration. In a recently published paper by Odeh,10 the more general problem of producing from an arbitrary interval within the pay zone was studied for the quasi-steady state flow of a compressible liquid, This is the case in which there is a a potential at the outer boundary and a constant flux across the same boundary. This contrasts with the problem studied here, which is concerned with the nonsteady-state behavior in an infinite reservoir. The exact solution of the partial penetration problem presents great analytical problems because the boundary conditions that solutions of the partial differential equations must satisfy are mixed; i.e., on one of the boundaries the pressure is specified on one portion and the flux on the other. This difficulty occurs at the wellbore, for the flux over the nonproductive section of the well is zero, and the potential over the perforated interval must be constant. In the case of constant rate production from the well, this uniform potential is time dependent and unknown, and the additional condition that where hl is the thickness of the perforated interval, must also b'e satisfied. This problem may be overcome in the case of constant rate production by making the assumption that the flux into the well is uniform over the entire perforated interval, so that on the wellbore the flux is specified over the total formation thickness. (communication to the Secretary *).-From an extended study of the Oatman and Secret Pass districts of Mohave County, Arizona, I believe that the genesis of the ore deposits, in most cases, is directly connected with rhyolitic intrusions later than the Tertiary flows; and that the developments of, the future will prove these intrusives to be the primary source of the ore. In support of this opinion I will instance the Wilhelm-Eclipse dike in Secret Pass and the Murdock, Nellie, Black Range dike and ledge in the southern part of the Oatman district. The Wilhelm-Eclipse dike is a very fine-grained light-colored siliceous rhyolite dike with a strike of N.45W. traversing the full length of the Secret Pass district about midway between two major faults which mark the easterly and westerly boundaries of the district. Sodium sulfide is used extensively to increase the recovery of oxidized copper and lead minerals by flotation, particularly when using xanthates as collectors. It is generally assumed that the sodium sulfide converts a film of the oxidized mineral to the sulfide, and that the xanthate, while not a very effective collector for the oxidized minerals, is a good collector for the sulfide. On the other hand, Taggart and his collaborators1 claim that unless sulfide minerals are oxidized they cannot adsorb xanthates and do not float. Gaudin2 states that amyl xanthate, used in conjunction with sodium sulfide, gives better results than ethyl xanthate. Rabone3 and Mayer-Schranz4 agree that excess of sulfide functions as a depressant. Owing to the greater solubilities of the oxidized minerals than of the sulfides, the consumption of sodium sulfide is greater than that of most other flotation reagents, up to 10 lb. per ton of ore being used in some plants. Luyken and Bierbrauer5 recommend a water washing to remove soluble heavy metal salts; by this means sulfide consumption may be reduced. It was desirable to determine the limits of the sulfide concentrations between which contact is possible at surfaces of anglesite and cerussite in xanthate solutions. Similar determinations were desirable for the sulfide minerals with which the oxidized minerals are usually associated, since conditions should be chosen, if possible, so that the two types of mineral will float together. Because of the formation, especially in acid solutions, of hydrogen sulfide and of the hydrosulfide ion (HS-), the permissible limits of sulfide addition are obviously dependent upon the pH value. Sphalerite responds to ethyl xanthate only in the presence of an activator; for example, copper sulfate. It was necessary, therefore, to determine whether sodium sulfide interferes with the activation of sphalerite by copper sulfate. The combined effect of sulfide and copper sulfate was determined also for galena, chalcopyrite and pyrite.

Mine backfilling is a desirable method for the disposal of retorted oil shale. Hydraulic, mechanical and pneumatic transport and stowing methods were investigated, and the mechanical transport and stowing method using conveyors was selected as the most promising system. Transport of retorted oil shale at the rate of 2700 t/h (3000 stph) to the backfill level, situated about 610 m (2000 ft) below surface, with skips or conveyors is uneconomic. Hence, borehole transport utilizing gravity flow was investigated. This Paper describes the theory of flow, flow properties of retorted oil shale, and the design of a borehole and hopper system.

A method is described whereby the true financial value of each constituent of each concentrate can be calculated. Each value is then compared with what this value would be in a perfect separation. The difference in each case represents the loss incurred by each aspect of an inefficient separation. The relative magnitudes of these losses indicate those avenues of plant investigation and research that offer the highest potential reward. The metallurgical efficiency of a concentration operation is difficult to express because there are two criteria of performance, namely, grade and recovery. Neither of these alone gives any indication of the effectiveness of an operation and, if they are combined in some formula, it must be empirical and unreliable because of many external factors. Since milling is an operation performed as one step in the most profitable overall method of producing a metal or other end product, the main objective of mill operation should be to make a maximum contribution to this maximum profit. When concentrates are sold to custom smelters, the income from the operation, and the costs, may be calculated. When concentrates are further processed by another division of the same company, and there is no formal financial relationship between, say, the milling and smelting divisions of the company, the mill superintendent's job is less well defined. But even so, if the mill superintendent works as though he were selling his concentrates, and uses reasonable, if fictitious, conditions of sale, then he can get a good indication of the effectiveness of his operation by calculating his "Economic Recovery". ECONOMIC RECOVERY This is a method used as a basis of operation by several mills and has been described in the literature. Very briefly, the "standard" of operation is taken as that of a mill separating the ore into perfectly pure concentrates with 100% recovery of each mineral in its respective concentrate. For example, a 4%Pb, 4% Zn ore (galena and sphalerite), would provide a lead concentrate weighing 4.62% of the feed and assaying 86.6% Pb and a zinc concentrate weighing 5.97% of the feed and assaying 67.1 % zinc. These perfect concentrates are (hypothetically) shipped to the appropriate smelters, freight and treatment charges and payments calculated, and the net return obtained. This is the optimum financial return for the operation of the mill and is used as the standard. Now the return for the actual, real-life, mill operation is calculated in the same way, and the ratio of the two is termed the Economic Recovery. Many additions and modifications may be made in any particular case. For example, if the zinc mineral is marmatite, the optimum grade of the zinc concentrate may be set lower than 67.1%. If silver is present, it will be recovered 100% in the lead concentrate in the perfect operation. Similarly, cadmium will be recovered 100% with the sphalerite. Mr. Weiss' paper' mentions a case where, because of extremely fine intergrowth between the valuable mineral, chalcocite, and pyrite, the optimum grade of copper concentrate was taken as 45% Cu instead of the theoretical 80%. Each operation will present its own possibilities in this way.

An investigation of the Cr-Ni system has revealed that there exists a eutectoid transformation at about 1180°C. 'The transformation in chromium implied by the eutectoid reaction was detected at about 100°C below its melting point. Associated with the eutectoid transformation, a metastable transition structure has been found. THE Cr-Ni phase diagram is shown in current literature to be a simple eutectic system in which the high chromium end of the diagram is incompletely determined, Fig. 1. The last investigation of this system was undertaken in 1936.' Because of limitations in metal purity, especially of chromium, and temperature measuring techniques, the diagram should be accepted with some reservations, as was indicated by Hansen.V or examwle.-, the wresence of the compound Cr²Ni, with a tetragonal structure," remains unverified and incompatible with the simple eutectic diagram. The work reported here began because of discrepancies that appeared in experimental studies in the binary alloys Cr-Ni and in the ternary system Cr-Mo-Ni. The existing binary Cr-Ni diagram failed to provide a complete explanation of observations made by microscope, X-ray, and thermal analyses. Experimental Methods The materials employed were of a higher degree of purity than were available to previous investigators. The Mond nickel used had a nominal purity of 99.87 pct, while the electrolytic chromium analyzed 99.03 pct with the major impurity being 0.5 to 0.7 pct oxygen with some iron. All alloys were melted in a vacuum furnace to remove dissolved gases, sufficient carbon was added to the charge to combine with all the oxygen as CO. Final analysis determined the carbon as about 0.02 pct and the oxygen around 0.06 pct or slightly more. Stabilized zirconia crucibles and thermocouple protection tips were used throughout and contributed no detectable impurity to the melts, as long as the oxygen in the chromium was kept low. Heats averaged about 250 g, which permitted about 2 in. of the thermocouple protection tips to be submerged. The temperature drop across the thermocouple protection tip was determined to be about 3°C, a minor source of error. The alloys, after removal from the vacuum furnace, were placed in a furnace operating in a purified argon atmosphere for the thermal analyses. An- nealed wolfram-molybdenum thermocouples provided the primary means of temperature determination, though a Pt-Pt-10 pct Rh couple was employed for a check when possible. A sensitive, high-speed Leeds and Northrup Speedomax recording potentiometer indicated the thermocouple output. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained primarily on a Norelco unit, which permitted diffraction angles only up to 45" (28 = 90"). In general, either rotated or stationary solid samples were used, because it later evolved that many samples were susceptible to transformation resulting from the cold working involved in pulverizing. It was also noted that rotating a sample sometimes suppressed weak lines, so, usually, samples were not rotated. Later a high temperature camera was adapted for use at temperatures up to 1400 °C on the Norelco unit utilizing both solid and powdered samples. This paper reviews the three major distillation processes: multiple effect (LTV) evaporation, multi-stage flash distillation and vapor-compression forced circulation evaporation. Scale preventative measures are discussed for all saline water applications. Operational data is presented on the Freeport, Texas, demonstration plant, which is the first government facility to produce one million gallons per day of fresh water for a municipality. There has been much publicity concerning the water crisis that confronts many peoples today. There is little doubt that the arid regions - which include the Middle East, parts of Africa and the Caribbean — have suffered to no slight extent for the lack of this most precious commodity. But what about our own country? Government experts have extrapolated demands and flatly predict that by 1980 we will be faced with a shortage of 80 billion gal per day. The validity of this prediction has been disputed by others; however, it appears certain that there will always be a natural abundance in some areas, a shortage of supply in other areas. Distributing our total natural water resource equitably would be impossible. Transmission of water by means of aqueducts can be an expensive undertaking. The controversial Feather River Project in Calif. is an example. The estimated cost for this venture is a staggering three billion dollars. As our population continues to increase and our standard of living rises, agricultural and industrial requirements will be proportionate. What can be done to avoid a crisis? We can conserve and use our water for industrial and irrigation purposes more judiciously: we can attempt to eliminate pollution of our natural resources from sewage and industrial wastes; we can develop, while there is time, saline water conversion processes for the massive production of low cost fresh water. The scope of this paper will be limited to only the distillation type processes that are commercially feasible. The first step in making potable water is to find a source of raw material. An inexhaustible supply is provided by oceans in coastal regions, but the supply of water is more critical in the inland communities of our country. The source of raw material in these. regions is brackish well water and this must be utilized. There is a significant process difference when handling brackish water compared to seawater and this brings out an important fact: No single conversion method can be universally applied to solve all the water problems. Composition of the raw water and degree of distillate purity are factors which must be considered before a particular process is selected. Local conditions at the plant site, fuel costs, labor costs, disposal facilities, etc. are other equally important factors which must be evaluated. WATER CONVERSION PROCESSES Conversion processes commercially feasible today are: 1) multiple effect evaporation, 2) multiple flash distillation, 3) vapor compression distillation and 4) electrodialysis. The first three are distillation processes which take potable water out of the raw water, while the fourth is a membrane process which takes out the salt. In addition to the above there are a good number of other promising methods for production of potable water, many of them in the basic research stage. Freezing is another promising process with commercial potential. This process hinges upon the formation of ice crystals which are free of salt occulsions. Separation and washing of the crystals are problems that must be solved before this process can be considered commercially feasible. Freezing processes have several advantages mostly attributable to the low temperature of operation. This low temperature reduces the scaling and corrosion problems encountered in higher temperature operations. Several different freezing processes are being considered and will be tested in the pilot plant at Wrightsville Beach. One process is a flash freeze process, a second uses a secondary refrigerant such as butane for freezing, and a third process employs a secondary refrigerant particularly controlled to produce large ice crystals. IN the pumping of sands, slurries and slimes, practices developed over the years are the real keystones of successful operation. These practices are necessarily based on modifications of familiar theories. Practical methods used in the solution of problems involving the pumping of materials are set forth in the following discussion. BASIC REQUIREMENTS To pump sands and slurries economically, a few basic requirements must be met by the pumping system as a whole. A pipe-line velocity must be established that will move the fluid mixture throughout the entire system without any possibility of the solids settling out. To accomplish this, the velocity of flow must be slightly in excess of the critical velocity of the mixture. The critical velocity of a mixture varies from 3 ft. per sec. to 18 ft. per sec., depending on the screen analysis, concentration, and specific gravity of the solids in the mixture. Most tailings are pumped at a minimum velocity of 4 ft. per sec. if they include slimes, whereas the pipe lines of sand and gravel dredges require velocities as high as 18 ft. per second. A number of articles have been written on the determination of the minimum velocities required to maintain solids in suspension. Studies have also been made on the friction and pumping heads developed when handling solids in suspension.1-4 Our experience so far has shown that, within the normal operating limits of a pumping system, the friction factor follows more nearly the basis described by Howard,1 who says, among his conclusions: " ... values of ƒ (friction factor) .. . will decrease with an increase in velocity." This conclusion is borne out by our actual experience. When the velocity in a pipe line is not sufficient to keep the solids in suspension, the total friction head is greater than when the velocity is increased to a point where the solids are in suspension. A slight increase in the volume of feed to the pump and a slight increase in the pump speed are usually all that is necessary to put the system in balance. MAINTAINING CONSTANT VOLUME Within reasonable limits, the volume of mixture to be handled through a pipe line should be held constant, so that the required velocity will be provided at all times. There are several ways in which this can be accomplished. The commonest is to provide a sump of sufficient capacity to take care of slight surges in the volume of mixture being fed to the pumping system. This sump, however, should not be as large as a settling chamber. The use of a float-controlled, fresh-water make-up valve in a sump will guarantee a constant volume. A survey of geological conditions, production and prices in Indiana oil fields. Shows no production and indefinite prospects from the sub-Trenton formation; good production and much untested territory in Trenton formation; and fair production from the Pennsylvanian with fair prospects for the future in both the Pennsylvanian and Mississip-pian formations. THE petroleum industry of Indiana made somewhat notable progress during the year 1923, considering the number of handicaps it encountered. The price of labor and materials continued to have an upward slant while the price of crude oil took a decidedly downward course. In spite of these adverse conditions, the quantity production will closely approximate that of 1922, when it passed the million-barrel mark. The progress of the industry in Indiana should be considered fairly satisfactory as long as the present production is maintained. In other words, if the loss of production from the waning old wells can be offset by the production from the new for a period of 10 or 15 years longer, the industry may have cause for congratulation.

THE four papers making up this symposum have been prepared espe-cially for those who have no knowledge of seismograph prospecting. To many people mathematics is a formidable subject, and many are discouraged from studying seismograph prospecting under the mistaken assumption that the mathematical requirements are severe. In the papers presented here there is not a single mathematical equation. We believe that considerable competence in dealing with some of the most important problems of this work can be attained without any mathe-matical training whatever. At the present time, there is a real need for interpretation of results by persons thoroughly competent to bring geologic experience and imagination to bear on data that are subject to multiple interpretation from a strictly physical viewpoint. Likewise, those charged with the responsibility of planning seismo-graph exploration campaigns would do well to become familiar with as much as possible of the technical aspects of the work. They would then be in better position to judge of its success in individual cases. It has often been said that the seismograph is a new structure-finding tool for the geologists to use. Using a tool and using its product are two different things. One does not use an automatic screw-threading machine when he buys a box of screws at the hardware store. Neither does the geologist

This paper is in the nature of a rough preliminary report on the progress that has been made in the application of the mass spectrometer to various problems arising in the petroleum industry. A few years ago the authors considered a number of the problems that were arising in the qualitative and quantitative measurement of small amounts of hydrocarbons. The methods available of making analyses by chemical techniques appeared to leave much room for improvement. Without going into the reasons at this point, attention was turned to the possibility of employing physical instead of chemical methods of accomplish-ing the desired results. A preliminary investigation disclosed that the mass spectrometer presented a possibility of solving many problems which could not easily be accomplished by other methods. Work was begun in developing the necessary apparatus and technique. A great deal of encouragement and many valuable suggestions were received from Dr. Robert A. Millikan, Dr. W. R. Smythe, and Dr. W. N. Lacey, of the California Institute of Technology, and from Dr. E. 0. Lawrence, who recently received the Nobel Prize, of the University of California. The authors particularly wish to acknowl-edge the very great willingness of these out-standing scientists to be helpful in solving many of the problems that were involved. So far as the authors are aware, this was the first application of the mass spectrometer to commercial work. The results were considerably better than had at first been anticipated. Briefly, it is pos-sible to run a qualitative and quantitative analysis of an unknown mixture of hydro-carbon gases, with an accuracy of better than plus or minus 5 per cent of each of the various constituents. An exceedingly high degree of sensitivity has been obtained, and a relatively short time is required to com-plete an analysis. Furthermore, it is un-necessary to separate a mixture of gases into its various components in order to complete the analysis.

Within the past two years, a number of publications have called attention to the double peaks, or stages, that appear in the hardness and strength curves of certain aging alloys. The author has shown the existence of double hardness peaks during the aging of a high-purity silver-copper alloy;' and on the basis of electrical resistance, microscopic, dilation and lattice-parameter measurements, hc concluded that the initial hardness peak occurs prior to precipitation while the secondary hardening is due to precipitation. It was suggested that the general mechanism of age-hardening involves two consecutive processes, the first consisting of nucleus or knot2 formation, and the second consisting of actual precipitation and particle growth. It was further held that the two stages are interdependent, but because of nonuniform precipitation they may overlap each other to an extent that increases as the aging temperature is raised. At high aging temperatures, the effect of the first stage cannot be detected because of the rapid occurrernce of precipitation. The general theory of age-hardening recently presented by Dr. M. L. V. Gayler3 is in close agreement with the picture outlined above. With reference to work done on duralumin, copper-beryllium and copper-silver alloys, Dr. Gayler also concluded that age-hardening takes place in two consecutive steps: first, diffusion (in which the solute atoms migrate to certain crystallographic planes), and then precipitation. However, W. L. Fink and D. W. Smith4 have shown that the double aging peaks that appear in the strength curves of high-purity aluminum-copper alloys may be explained without recourse to pre-precipitation phenomena. By means of very careful metallographic technique, Fink and Smith demonstrated that during aging the precipitation takes place at an accelerated rate along the grain boundaries and slip planes as a result of the plastic deformation caused by the drastic quench from the solution heat-treatment temperature. Cyclones have been used successfully in the mineral industries to solve solid-liquid as well as solid-solid separation problems in the processing of fine particles. Substantial information is available about the operation of cyclones as thickeners, classifiers, and concentrators using a dense medium. However, very little is known about the operation of the cyclone as a fine coal concentrator not using dense medium. This application of the cyclone, namely to wash fine coal in water, requires that classification phenomena be minimized in order to arrive at an effective separation of the high density ash and sulfur-bearing mineral particles from the low density coal particles over a wide particle size range. The authors have investigated the role of feed pressure, orifice diameters, and vortex-finder length in the cyclone washing of fine coal (--1/4 in.) in water. The results of this investigation show that cyclone washing of fine coal in water is an effective unit operation particularly capable of reducing the inorganic pyritic sulfur content. The combination of hydrocyclones with complimentary equipment such as Sieve bends, shaking tables, and flotation units appears to be especially promising and may ultimately yield fine coal processing systems that could approximate the high recovery efficiencies of today's coarse coal cleaning circuits. In the future, fine coal beneficiation can be expected to receive even greater research emphasis as a result of increasing sulfur restrictions on all major coal markets. In a previous paper, work, conducted at the Pennsylvania State University, on the hydrocyclone washing of fine coal was discussed.' The initial evaluation based on that wo-rk demonstrated the feasibility of hydrocyclones as fine-coal cleaning devices, and in that previous paper selected test data were presented that showed in principle how product yield and assay respond to variations of the major cyclone operating variables. The present paper reports in greater detail on the findings and presents a comprehensive evaluation of the data as follows: (1) Hydrocyclone throughput rates were related to feed pressure and other variables by regression equations. These equations are compared with other capacity-vs.-pressure drop expressions taken from the literature on classification cyclones. (2) The flow ratio was found to be the most important variable for the separation of the solids. Control of this ratio through various cyclone operating parameters is discussed. (3) The data on the product yield as well as the ash and sulfur assays from the tests were evaluated by means of correlation and multiple regression analyses. Because size-classification phenomena cannot be suppressed completely in hydrocyclone washers, product yield and assay data are regressed against cyclone operating variables separately for different size classes. These equations then reveal how the interactions of the cyclone operating variables vary in terms of the separation for different size classes. (4) Density partitions from additional tests were analyzed by supplementing product-size analyses with sink-float analyses of the separated product size classes. The evaluation of these data show how classification phenomena affect separation by density. The results demonstrate in particular the feasibility of the hydrocyclone washer for removing pyritic sulfur from fine coal. In addition to these specific findings, the investigation points up the value, in general, of using hydrocyclone washers in combination with unit operations such as screening, table concentration, and flotation. In order to make optimum use of the hydrocyclone washers and work out the most effective combination of unit operations, it is important to have careful flowsheet analyses corresponding to the given feed and product requirements. Analyses of this kind are now possible by means of computer simulation of flowsheets and other operation research tools. INTRODUCTION Before proceeding with the detailed treatment and evaluation of our results, it will be useful to review the fundamental aspects of cyclone separators and also restate the experimental procedures and data handling employed in these studies.
