Filtration of hot (60°C) supersaturated zinc sulphate solution (sp gr 1.540) from slimy leach residues at the electrolytic zinc plant of Sullivan Mining Co., Kellogg, Idaho, is de- scribed. Separation of liquids and solids in the finished leach is by Burt filters modified to meet conditions of high-acid, high-density process for electrolytic zinc. Operating characteristics of the Burt filter on this pulp are presented.

Single bit-tooth penetration experiments under static load were conducted on six rocks at confining pressures of O to 5,000 psi using sharp wedge-shaped teeth with included angles ranging from 30 to 120° In general, the force-displacement curves for all rocks exhibit an increasingly nonlinear and discontinuous behavior with decreasing confining pressure. The confining pressure at which a rock exhibits a macroscopic transition from predominantly ductile to predominantly brittle behavior during penetration vmies from about 500 to 1,000 psi for the limestones to greater than 5,000 psi for dolomite. The correlation between calculated values of force per unit penetration based on plasticity theory and experimental values is quite encouraging, even at confining pressures as low as 1,000 psi A qualitative correlation between volume of fragmented rock per unit energy input for a single bit-tooth and drilling rate for microbits appears to exist over a confining pressure range of 0 to 5,000 psi. INTRODUCTION Laboratory experiments utilizing a small-scale drilling apparatus have demonstrated that penetration rates are reduced considerably as a result of increasing the confining pressure from atmospheric to a few thousand psi?-3 This undesirable situation can, in general, be attributed to a combination of decreased efficiency of chip removal at the bottom of the borehole, increased rock-failure strength, and a possible change in the mechanism of chip generation and rock fragmentation with increasing confining pressure. To more fully understand the principles underlying the last circumstance, it is the purpose of this investigation to experimentally study the mechanism of single bit-tooth penetration into dry rock at low confining pressures and, in particular, to establish the confining pressure at which the penetration mechanism may undergo a brittle to ductile transition for various rock types commonly encountered in drilling. Confining pressure as used here refers to the differential pressure between the borehole fluid pressure and the formation-pore fluid pressure. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Using an experimental apparatus previously described: a single, sharp wedge-shaped tool was forced under a "statically" applied load into an effectively semi-in finite dry rock sample subjected to a prescribed confining pressure. To prevent the invasion of the con fining-pressure fluid into the pores of the rock sample during penetration, the exposed surface of the rock was jacketed with a layer of silicon putty.* Electrical instrumentation incorporated into the apparatus yielded a graphical plot of force on the tool as a function of penetration or displacement of the tool into the rock during an experiment. During the course of the experimentation the following conditions were maintained constant: (1) pore pressure — atmospheric (i.e., the rock was dry); (2) temperature — 75F; (3) rate of loading — essentially static (approximately 0.002 in./sec); (4) bit tooth — a sharp wedge-shaped tool loaded normal to the rock surface; (5) rock surface — smooth and flat; (6) drilling fluid — hydraulic oil; and (7) maximum depth of penetration — approximateiy 0.1 in. In addition, each experiment was performed on a different rock sample so the rock surface is free of a layer of cuttings and of any previous indentation craters. The influence of the corners of a borehole was neglected, since each rock sample was cemented inta a section of aLuminum tubing to simulate a semi-infinite body. Indentation experiments were made on a sandstone, two limestones, a marble, a dolomite and a schist with a 60' bit-tooth over a range of confining pressures from atmospheric to 5,000 psi and at a constant confining pressure of 1,000 psi for a variety of bit-teeth with angles ranging from 30 to

It is possible by means of the electrolytic model to simulate water-flooding or gas recycling systems involving input and output wells, and also the encroachment of a natural water drive. The results are obtained pic-torially, and by simple measurements and calculations the percentage of recovery is obtained qualitatively as a function of the total input. Introduction The increased demand for petroleum products, together with the decline in discovery rate and the higher cost of recovery as deeper formations are brought into production, has stimulated interest in methods for studying and predicting efficiencies of various production programs. Among methods Of recovery that have become of increased significance recently are gas recycling in condensate fields and secondary recovery by water-flooding. The electrolytic model is a useful device for studying such methods in the laboratory, at least in a qualitative way. The original experiments with electrolytic models and the development of their application to the study of secondary reCoverY problems were published in 1933. 1,2,3 Subsequently other investigators continued the development and modification of the bait method, with resultant improvements and extension of its applications.4-7 The method and equipment to be described here are thought to represent still further improvement in the results obtainable, with increased validity in their application to field problems. Sand OF Principles of Operation The underlying theory of the operation of the model is given in references I, 2 and 3. However, a brief statement of principles involved is given herewith. The applicability of the model is based on the fact that Ohm's law and d'Arcy's law are exactly analogous; whence, electrical flow through a conducting medium may be used to simulate homogeneous fluid flow through a permeable medium. If two electrodes are placed in a conducting (ionized) solution and connected to the positive and negative terminals of a source of direct current, the positive ions of the solution will move toward the negative terminal, Since the velocity of an ion in an electrolytic medium is proportional to the electrical gradient, just as the velocity of a fluid particle in a porous medium is proportional to the pressure gradient, the motion of the ions in the potential field will be the same as the motion of fluid particles in a porous medium if the positive and negative terminals (input and output wells) and boundary conditions are made equivalent in shape and distribution. Reconstruction of the British mining industry began shortly after nationalization in 1947 and continued until well into the 1950s with the support of the government. This support diminished as plentiful supplies of cheap oil from the Middle East made many coal mines uneconomic. The planned rundown which followed was foreshadowed in the 1965 White Paper which outlined financial measures to speed the closure of uneconomic collieries. The decline appeared likely to continue into the 21st century as the role of coal in UK energy requirements became less and less significant. This policy was well on course in 1973 when the oil crisis led to a complete reappraisal of the position. A government examination in 1974 of the coal industry then supported the National Coal Board's general strategy of major capital investment as set out in its 'Plan for Coal'. The plan was aimed at halting the intended decline in the industry's capacity and restoring it to 120 million tons of deep mined output in 1985. The plan proposed action along the following lines: Increase output by major investment in construction at existing collieries with sufficient reserves to give 13 million tons per annum extra output.

MINERAL industry activities have not been seriously hampered by a lack of men with higher training. The balance between opportunities for employment and advancement and available personnel has been a happy one, with enough competition to stimulate effort but not the unfortunate conditions arising from an overabundance. of employment seekers. Nearly all mineral industry educational institutions have been concerned about the falling enrollment in mining and metallurgical courses of study during the past decade. But industry has drawn upon a supply of many types of technically trained men apart from those who prepared their careers specifically in the mineral industry. Some schools have made this possible by uniting geologists, mineralogists, and others with students in mining and engineering. On the other hand, some schools have combined their department of mining engineering with an over-all engineering department and continue to send their graduates into the mineral industry by another route. On the whole, this seems to be a good trend and is likely to result in men better trained for current problems than would have been possible under the older rigid curricula.

THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE on the rolling characteristics of the precious metals-gold, silver, the platinum metals and their alloys-is incomplete and mostly from scattered sources. In the present paper an effort has been made to assemble and correlate it and to fill in some of the gaps that exist. GENERAL ROLLING CHARACTERISTICS SOME EFFECTS OF IMPURITIES Gold and its alloys are generally considered to be hot short and hence are usually rolled cold. Cold rolling of the yellow, green, and pink gold alloys. Which customarily contain gold, silver, copper and zinc and frequently some nickel as well, introduces no new problems since reasonable reductions are quite feasible and the alloys show little tendency to fire crack in subsequent annealing. The white gold alloys. which usually contain little or no silver and 10 pct or more nickel, are very susceptible to fire cracking1 and hence wrist he given relatively heavy reductions, i. e., 8-10 pct or more per pass with a total reduction of about 50 pct between anneals, to minimize this tendency. In addition, it is preferable to keep the bar as flat as possible during rolling. Although no comprehensive study appears to have been made of the effects of impurities on the cold rolling characteristics of gold alloys, the observations of Nowack2 on the effects of small

Mineral dressing is an industrial art concerned with the treatment and separation of solids suspended in fluids. Knowledge and evaluation of the area of solid-fluid interface is important in all cases except those involving only large pieces of solid. In fact, many problems relating to comminution, to flotation, to thickening and classification, could be dealt with more rationally if the interfacial area were known. A number of methods have been proposed for the measurement of the surface of certain finely divided solids. Among them are methods using rate of dissolution of the solid,? its magnetic remanence,³ the turbidity of its suspension," and the character of the size distribution of the material.9 The first two are limited to one mineralogical species per sample; the third has certain optical limitations, especially for mineral mixtures, and the fourth is based on an extrapolation of uncertain validity. The need of a better and more general method of surface determination has long been felt, therefore. The method of P. H. Emmett,4 based upon the low-temperature adsorption of vapors, appears to fulfill this need. This method consists in determining the amount of nitrogen that is adsorbed by a given sample of solid at the temperature of boiling nitrogen. The more surface there is on the solid—both internal and external—the more nitrogen is abstracted. In actual operation, the method is somewhat less simple than has been stated so far, in that the nitrogen is adsorbed in an incomplete layer, the completeness and thickness of the layer being related to the pressure of the nitrogen in contact with the sample.2 This circumstance makes it necessary to determine the nitrogen adsorption for three or more values of the nitrogen pressure. Apparatus In the Richards Mineral Dressing Laboratories an Emmett apparatus has been built and tested (Figs. I and 2). A mechanical vacuum pump B and a mercury diffusion pump A work in series to give a high vacuum. The sample, placed in bulb D, can be evacuated by this pump train by suitable operation of the stopcocks in the glass tubing that connects the various parts of the apparatus. C is a McLeod gauge, used to ascertain the order of magnitude of the vacuum obtained, and not for accurate pressure measurements. Pressure measurements are made in the mercury manometer F and gas-volume measurements in the gas burette E. Gases are stored in flasks L (nitrogen) and K (helium), arranged so that definite quantities of these gases can be introduced into

It is a generally recognized fact that by repeated straining the fracture stress of any metal is reduced to a fraction of its value for static loading. The value of this fatigue strength depends upon numerous factors, such as the states of strain and stress, the limits of straining, and the number of repeated loadings or cycles The large volume of previous investigations on fatigue is concerned entirely with large numbers of cycles, say exceeding 10,000 and up to 500,000,000. However, the changes in fracture stress and fracture strain occurring after a small number of repeated loadings have attracted little attention. Apparently the only investigations of this type are those byLudwik4.5 who subjected steel, copper, and aluminum wire to repeated torsion. In each test the torque was varied between identical values in the two directions of twisting. Depending upon the magnitude of the moment, fracturing occurred after a number of cycles, up to 10,000. The results of Ludwik's tests will be discussed later Such torsion does not readily yield actual stress and strain values. Therefore a pre- liminary study was made of the effects of repeated direct stresses, that is, tension and compression stresses. Because such tests are considerably more tedious than torsion tests, only high stresses were used in the preliminary work, yielding definite changes in metal properties after a few cycles. It was found in these tests that strains could be controlled more readily than stresses in the investigated range of high stresses. This paper, consequently, deals with the effects of strains of equal magnitude but different signs. The metal was first prestrained in static tension by a certain amount then subjected to compression to yield the same amount of strain after unloading. This loading cycle was repeated up to a maximum of seven times. After various cycles, the stress-strain curves in tension were determined, up to fracturing. As material for these tests, the aluniinum alloy 24ST was selected because it exhibits a comparatively small amount of necking in the tension rest This alloy permitted, therefore rather accurate cont.rol at the high strains necessary to produce fatigue failures at less than seven cycles. The results of this invest~gation appear sufliciently interesting to extend the method of attack in various directions It is intended to study (11 the effects of cycles up to a tew thousands and (2) the effects of strains of different magnitude in tension and compression respectively 'The latter variable also includes a. a special case the effects of compressive strains.

IT has always seemed to me that mining methods are inventions that follow necessity. I have yet, to be connected with a property where the consultant who has been engaged has laid out a mining method that has been strictly adhered to through the life of the mine. Possibly there are exceptions. As a general rule, perhaps, the method becomes the result of sad experience. I suppose if a person were to attempt to measure the tendency to get away from shrinkage stoping, he would need to send out a questionnaire and expect to receive truthful answers, and, having compiled the results, I think we would find that throughout the country there would be but few cases where present value of product permits the old original so-called shrinkage method to be followed. The method that I had hoped to hear Mr. Fozard expound is strictly an adaptation of shrinkage. Cav-ings do not enter. It was developed by Mr. Fozard and his staff at the Beatson mine of the Kennecott Copper Corp., at, Latouche, Alaska. Stephen Birch, in the TRANSACTIONS in 1923, submitted a brief paper on the mining at Beatson. He stated that a new adaptation of shrinkage was being tried because, although at sur-face the copper .content had been relatively high, at lower levels, in the mine it had decreased.

A series of aluminum single crystals was subjected to axially symmetric flow by drawing through dies. The orientation dependence of the drawing stress, which indicates the resistance to this type of flow, compares reasonably with predictions of Taylor and of Bishop and Hill. Measured lattice rotations likewise are generally consistent with theory. The most successful analyses of the plastic behavior of polycrystalline metal and its relationship to single crystal behavior are those of Taylor1-3 and of Bishop and Hill.4-6 The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical test of some of the basic assumptions involved in these theories. Both treatments apply to fcc metals and assume the shape change of each grain in a polycrystal to be the same as that of the polycrystal as a whole. Thus for a randomly oriented polycrystal extended under uni-axial tension each grain is assumed to undergo axially symmetric flow. dey = dez = -1/2dex, deyZ = dezx = dexy = 0 [l] where x, y, and z are a set of orthogonal axes, x being the tensile axis. Although [011.] oriented grains in bcc and fcc metals may depart markedly from this ideal behavior,7,8 the assumption is probably quite reasonable for most grains. Under a uniaxial tensile stress, ox, the work dW per unit volume expended in producing an increment of axial strain dex is, dW=oxdex [21 Since this work is expended in slip, dw =STi dyi 131 where Ti and yi are the shear stress and shear strain on the active slip systems. In both analyses Ti is taken to be the same on all slip systems, and dependent only on the total prior shear strain on all systems, so dw = Tdy [41 where t is the shear stress required for slip and y is the sum of the shear strain yi on all slip systems. Combining 121 and [4] and defining M = oX/T The ratio M is a generalized Schmid factor. It relates the tensile stress required for axially symmetric flow, ox, to the basic shear stress, 7, and it also expresses the ratio of crystallographic strain, y, to the tensile strain, Ex It depends only on the orientation of the crystal. Taylor evaluated M for various orientations by finding the least value of dy/dEx which could satisfy the shape change. Bishop and Hill, on the other hand, found M by considering the relative work (1/T)dW/dEx expended by stress states which could activate enough slip systems to produce the shape changes. The results of both methods appear to be equivalent, although certain omissions were made in Taylor's original work. The orientation dependence of M, calculated by the second method,9 is shown in Fig. 1. Taylor used the average 2= 3.06 for all possible orientations to predict the tensile stress-strain curve (oxvs Ex) for a random polycrystal from the shear stress-strain curve (t vs y) of a single crystal. Changes in M from lattice rotation were neglected so points on the ox vs ex curve were simply taken at ox = 3.06t and e = y/3.06 from corresponding points on the t vs y curve. Recent extension of the analyses of Taylor and of Bishop and Hill to crystallographically textured metals has been used to relate plastic anisotropy to textures, and to predict the potential texture hardening that could result from texture control.9 Unfortunately there have been relatively few experimental tests of the underlying theory. Taylor found that the tensile stress-strain curve of polycrystalline aluminum did agree reasonably well with that predicted from a single-crystal T-y curve. Some attention should be given to definitions. The term "unit operation " may have at least two meanings. One meaning is the merging of titles and the development and operation of the unitized area, as if it were one tract of land held under a single oil and gas lease, according to a definite program intended to accomplish a maximum recovery from the pool as a whole at a minimum of cost. It is incomplete when the royalty owners do not also merge their titles to their oil and gas rights in the area, and is complete when they do. The other meaning is not accompanied by any merger of titles, but the development and operation of the area is in accordance, as nearly as reasonably practicable, with such a program. This second conception may be nothing more than a cooperative development and operation plan, but in this paper it is regarded as more than that. If there cannot be unit operation without a merger of titles, it would seem that the state cannot require unit operation, for it cannot require a merging of titles; but if it may consist in requiring each and all of the leaseholders to develop and operate or to submit to a development and operation according to some such common plan as is referred to above without at the same time requiring a merger of titles, it would seem that unit operation may be required by the state. Whether the states have this power is the subject to be herein considered. If the state can so bind the several lessees, it also can so bind the several lessors. The writer does not know what would be an ideal plan for the development and operation of a pool; but it takes into account the fact that the accumulation of gas and oil is not uniform throughout the formation; that often free gas, highly compressed, occupies the upper portions of the reservoir, the oil with compressed gas in solution coming next in order; that at places oil is not overlain by free gas, and sometimes there are peaks where free gas is not immediately underlain by any oil; and the fact that these substances are held under a uniformly distributed pressure, generally referred to as "rock pressure." It also recognizes that the most efficient utilization of this naturally existing reservoir pressure in the recovery of the oil requires that there be no operation of wells completed into areas where gas only has accumulated, for this diminishes the

Japanese wartime economy demanded domestic cobalt production. This paper describes a process operated for two years at the Besshi mine and smelter on extremely low grade (0.1 pct Co) pyrite concentrates obtained from copper ore. 'The steps in the process were roasting, leaching, precipitation, reduction fusion to crude cobalt, and finally refining by electrolysis to 99+ pct. COBALT ore deposits in Japan are all small and of poor grade. In the past, a small amount of cobalt has been produced from the best portions of a few of these deposits, and very little production is expected in the future. In addition to these lean cobalt ores, cobalt is present in the cupriferous pyrite which is fairly abundant although of low grade, as is shown in Table I. Considerable cobalt is expected from these deposits because of their extent. Cobalt cannot be exclusively recovered economically from ore of this type; however, if means could be devised to recover it as a byproduct of copper production, a fairly large production at reasonable cost could be expected from Japanese sources. It was along this line that the research work was done. Selection of Suitable Process The process for extracting cobalt differs from ore to ore according to their composition. The difficulty in cobalt metallurgy arises from the fact that chemically cobalt resembles many such common metals as Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, and Zn, associated with it in the ores. In the present case the most serious difficulties were: 1—Extremely low grade ore, 0.1 pct Co. 2—The large proportion of iron accompanying cobalt and its close similarity in chemical behavior. 3—The fairly large proportion of zinc and manganese and their chemical similarity to cobalt. The recovery of cobalt oxide as a byproduct of the hydrometallurgy of copper had been attempted in Japan but was stopped after a short period because it proved uneconomical. The literature disclosed no method for the recovery of cobalt from cobaltiferous copper pyrite and it was therefore necessary to devise a new process. The following basic principles were considered in selecting the process: 1—A major alteration in copper production methods should not be necessary. 2—The first step should be the extraction of cobalt leaving the large quantity of iron unaffected. For this purpose wet metallurgy would be preferred.

FROM the viewpoint of the oil producer, the oil refiner, the oil marketer, and the investor, in oil securities, a brief picture of the crude oil supply and demand in the present critical season of the year will be timely and interesting. Although crude oil production has been in a comparatively poor statistical position this year, increased sales and sustained refinery and crude oil prices have allowed increased profits for many oil companies. The large amount of crude oil going into storage during the present period of peak consumption, just previous to the major yearly fall decline in consumption, has caused oil producers to make plans to leave the oil in the ground for the present in several of the areas of large flush production. The present moment is looked on as the turning point in the current year.

Finite difference equations were programmed and used to integrate the second-order, second-degree, partial differential equation with variable coefficients that represents the transient linear flow of gas-condensate fluids. Effect was given to the change with pressure of the compressibility factor, the viscosity, and the effective permeability and to change of the absolute permeability with distance. Integrations used as illustrations include recovery of fluid from a reservoir at a constant production rate followed by recovery at a declining rate calculated to maintain a constant pressure at the producing boundary. The time required to attain such a limiting pressure and the fraction of the reserve recovered in that time vary markedly with properties of the fluid represented by the coefficients. Fluid also is returned to the reservoir at a constant rate, until initial formation pressure is attained at the input boundary, and then at a calculated rate that will maintain but not exceed the limiting pressure. The computing programs were used to calculate the results that would be obtained in a series of back-pressure tests made at selected intervals of reservoir depletion. If effect is given to the variations in properties of the fluid that actually occur, then a series of back- pressure curves — one for each stage of reserve depletion — is required to indicate open-flow capacity and related flow characteristics dependably. The isochronal performnce method for determining flow characteristics of a well was simulated by computation. INTRODUCTION The back-pressure test procedurel is based on a derivation of the equation for steady-state radial flow of a gas, the properties of which are of necessity assumed to remain unchanged in applying the test results. The properties of most natural gases being recovered from reservoirs change as the reserve is depleted and pressures decline, and the results of an early back-pressure test may not be dependable for estimating the future delivery capacity of a well. The compressibility factor of a fluid under an initial pressure of 10,000 psia can change 45 per cent and the viscosity can change 70 per cent during the productive life of the reservoir. There are indications that the effective permeability to the flowing fluid can become 50 per cent of the original absolute permeability before enough liquid collects in the structure about a well as pressure declines to permit flow of liquid into the well. The advent of programmed electronic computing made practicable the integration of nonlinear, second-order, partial differentia1 equations2.3 pertaining to flow in reservoirs. Aronofsky and Porter4 represented the compressibility factor and the viscosity by a linear relationship, and integrated the equation for radial flow of gas for pressures up to 1,200 psi. Bruce, Peaceman, Rachford and Rice5 integrated the partial differential equations for both linear and radial unsteady-state flow of ideal gas in porous media. Their published results were a substantial guide in this study of integration of the partial differential equation of linear flow with coefficients of the equation variable. The computing program was developed to treat effective permeability as being both distance-dependent and pressure-dependent. In this study all examples of effective permeability are assumptions designed primarily to aid in developing programs for giving effect to this and other variable coefficients. The accumulation of data for expressing the pressure dependency of the effective permeability is the objective of a concurrent investigation. The experimental phase behavior of several field gas-condensate systems, one field volatile oil system, and a series of synthetic systems having gas-oil ratios from 2,000 to 20,000 scf/bbl stock tank oil was measured. The data were used to calculate the depletion performance of the field systems at their respective reservoir temperatures and of the synthetic systems at various temperatures. The results of the performance calculations were used to prepare correlations of total stock tank oil and separator gas in-place, and the amount of each recovered by primary depletion. Data needed to use the correlations are initial gas-oil ratio, initial tank oil gravity, reservoir temperature and reservoir pressure. The correlations presented should be useful for estiinating recovery from reservoirs producing volatile oils or rich gas condensates having gas-oil ratios from about 2,000 to 30,000 scf/bbl of stock tank oil. INTRODUCTION Prediction of depletion performance for gas-condensate reservoirs usually requires extensive laboratory work or lengthy phase-behavior calculations. For many small gas-condensate bearing zones the expense of such work is often not justified. Furthermore, where large holdings are involved, it is useful to have estimates of future oil and gas production in advance of the results of a laboratory analysis, even if such work is ultimately planned. For these reasons, it would be of value to have a method for rapidly estimating the depletion performance of gas-condensate reservoirs from the type of field data usually available. Few data on the reservoir depletion performance are available for the purpose of developing correlations. The increasing number of gas-condensate discoveries and the advent of high-speed computers have stimulated the development of methods for predicting performance. Such calculated performance data have been shown to be reliable and are becoming accepted as a basis for reserve estimates and for engineering studies. It therefore seems satisfactory to use results of performance predictions themselves for the purpose of developing the desired correlations. Such an approach is described in this paper. Several rich natural gas-condensate systems (gas-oil ratios of from about 3,600 to 60,000 scf/bbl) and one natural volatile oil system were studied (2,363 scf/bbl). In addition, to provide a more systematic basis for correlating purposes, a series of related, synthetic reservoir fluid mixtures was also studied (GOR's from about 2,000 to 25,000 scf/bbl). The purpose of this paper is to show how the recovery of oil and gas by primary depletion may be estimated from surface gas-oil ratio, reservoir temperature and pressure, and tank oil gravity. procedure Experiments Companion samples of gas and oil were collected from the high pressure separators in nine different fields at the time of their discovery. INVESTIGATORS in the field of temperature measurement have long sought a thermoelectric couple fulfilling the following requirements: 1. It should be useful up to and including high industrial tempera-tures; i. e., 1000° to 1800° C. 2. Its thermoelectric variation with temperature should be linear and be maintained after heating to high temperatures for long periods of time. 3. It should be reproducible; i. e., different couples of the same elements should have similar calibration curves. 4. Its thermoelectric power should be large so as to allow the industrial use of rugged recording instruments. 5. Chemical reactions with, and physical changes within the elements of the couple should not alter its calibration. No thermocouple proposed to date exhibits simultaneously all of these characteristics, whereas the couple about to be described fulfills all requirements to a satisfactory degree.
