The term "electrocapillary amalgamation" is used in this paper to designate amalgamation processes that depend upon electrocapillary phenomenon; i.e., the action of an electric current upon the surface tension of mercury at the contact with aqueous solutions. Electro-capillary amalgamation is selected as a name for these processes because the electrocapillary phenomenon has been found to be the effective agent in the use of sodium amalgam, as well as in the various processes using an electric current from a source outside of the amalgam. Amalgamation processes that depend upon supplying an electric current to the amalgam from an outside source, such as batteries and generators, have previously been called electrical amalgamation processes. There has been a tremendous amount of experimental work done on amalgamation processes involving the use of an electric current, as shown by the large number of patents issued on these processes: the earliest in 1885 and the latest in 1934l. Regardless of all the experimental work, the fundamental principles causing the operation of electrocapillary amalgamation processes have not been described. The explanation usually given is that an electric current keeps the amalgam bright and clean. Patent No. 328532 states: It is well known that when amalgam plates are used for collecting gold and silver from their ores the surfaces of these plates are liable to become tarnished or sickened by certain substances contained in the ores or in the current of water which is employed to carry the ore over the plates, and that in this condition they are unfitted for amalgamating the particles of gold and silver. To prevent this and to keep the surfaces of the amalgamation plates always bright and in a better condition for catching and amalgamating the particles of gold and silver I employ electricity in the following manner: . . . A similar explanation is given 49 years later, in patent No. 1953364: The sodium (Na) ions lose their charge at the cathode becoming sodium atoms, which do not react with the electrolyte, but follow the grounded electrical current through the mercury body producing in their passage sodium amalgam and liberate themselves in the amalgamation compartment when brought in contact with the fed

(communication to the Secretary+). -With the word petrology-literally the science of rocks-being used primarily for igneous rocks, and with geophysics coming to mean the study of lavas and the rocks into which they solidify, contributions to the knowledge of the physical chemistry of sedimentary rocks, even though only ideas which may be used as working hypotheses, become most welcome. The forces which control the formation and subsequent history of the stratified portions of the earth's crust are so little known that no one has yet been able to settle finally the questions as to whether petroleum is of organic or inorganic origin; whether it originated far from its present position, or nearby. Yet both the chemical and physical problems of the rocks in which oil occurs seem to be more simple than those of the igneous rocks. The oil-bearing rocks of western Pennsylvania, for example, have in all probability never been subjected to a pressure exceeding 3,000 or 4,000 lb. to the square inch, nor to a temperature higher than 100° or 200° C. These pressures are considerably below the crushing strength of rocks, and the temperature far below their melting point. The igneous rocks,, on the other hand, have been affected by enormous pressures and very high temperatures and yet steady progress is being made in reproducing in the laboratory the conditions of their formation and subsequent modification within the earth. The solution of the sedimentary-rock problems would seem to be fully as important as those of igneous rocks, and yet we must content ourselves with reasoning backward and our inferences as to what has happened are oftentimes little more than guesses.1 One of the fundamental problems is the origin of the salt water in oil fields. Is the salt water fossil sea water; has it been formed by the solution o-f salts of various kinds from distinct beds, from disseminated par-ticles, and from the weathering of suitable grains in the rock; or is it of deep-seated origin? Its general resemblance to sea water points to the first, but the principles held by some concerning the free circulation of water throughout the earth's crust, and certain peculiarities of composition indicated by the few analyses available, seem out of harmony with such an explanation.

IN few mining regions in the world are the ores so varied and complex as in the Andes of central Peru. Consequently, in few localities is one company engaged in so many and such diverse metallurgical operations as the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. Concurrent with the mining of complex lead-zinc ores in Peru, and the consequent expansion of the Corporation's metallurgical activities, a department of metallurgical research was established in 1927 at La Orova. Facilities were provided for research in ore dressing, hydronivtallurgy pyrometallurgy, electrometallurgy, and analytical chemistry. In addition to laboratories. various pilot plants were built, including a concentrator, leaching plant, "by-product" smelter, and electrolytic refineries. These pilot plants are not diminutive units; they are designed and equipped as semicommercial plants for operation on a continuous 24-hour basis thus assuring the duplication of pilot plant results in actual practice. In general, the sequence in the development of metallurgical operations hasbeen as follows: (1) investigations in the laboratory to determine the most effective and economical method of treatment; (2) continuation of the research project on a pilot-plant scale when the evaluation of the laboratory

ClameR,* Philadelphia, Pa.—Unfortunately, prior to the war no serious attention was given to the conservation of tin, notwithstanding that this country is practically dependent upon outside sources for its entire tin supply. Tin is of vital importance in many industries, but it is surprising how many and how excellent are its substitutes when we become acquainted with them. Tin has always been a relatively high-priced metal, and it is part of the human attitude to associate high prices with high standards; it is not until the price of a commodity becomes well-nigh prohibitive that we hunt for substitutes, because the idea of substitution seems always to involve an assumption that the substitute must necessarily be inferior. The history of the development of bearing bronzes is a striking example of this policy. In the early days, copper-tin alloys were almost universally used, the idea then being prevalent, which is still held by many, that a bearing to resist wear must be hard, and the harder the better. The favorite bronze bearing contained 90 per cent. copper and 10 per cent. tin; frequently, in service which was considered severe, even higher proportions of tin were used. Such hard alloys have great resistance to compression, but as a rule they had a very wide factor of safety in this

There was optimism on 14th Street on April 22, Earth Day. We only have the report second hand because the demonstration conflicted with another appointment. Fifth Avenue was closed to vehicular traffic from 14th Street to the Park for a few hours and the crowd that showed up to promenade rivaled anything that can be imagined, even one at a country fair in Merry Old England. Certainly the domestic animals were there and the costumes were wild-as they are almost any day on 5th Avenue. However, the mood was friendly, happy and optimistic according to one of our neighbors who filmed and taped interviews with some of the characters. People think the air is going to be clean, and the water pure in the future. Land is going to be treated with respect. Even if the demonstration temporarily fouled the streets with litter, it served the purpose of dramatizing awareness. In talking to our friend about his experiences we didn't miss the opportunity to sound out his impression of whether or not people recognize that no group of people nor industry has a monopoly on pollution.

During the last 15 years much attention has been given to the " contact-metamorphic" ore deposits which mainly occur in limestone close to intrusive contacts. In general, these deposits are characterized by the association of magnetite and simple sulphides with the so-called L'contact-metamorphic" silicates. These silicates comprise garnet, epidote, vesuvianite, tremolite, wollastonite, diopside, hedenbergite, ilvaite, and many other rarer forms. The contact-metamorphic zones contain also in places minerals with boron, fluorine, and chlorine, like axinite, tourmaline, danburite, fluorite, and scapolite. There is also more or less quartz and coarsely recrystallized calcite. The simple sulphides embrace pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, galena, zincblende, more rarely arsenopyrite. On the whole, sulphantimonides and sulph-arsenides are rare. Deposits of magnetite or chalcopyrite or of both are most common. The deposits have an irregular or rudely tabular form, following main contacts, dike contacts, or stratification planes; they rarely extend for more than 1,500 or 2,000 ft. from the contact; far more commonly they only reach a distance of a few hundred feet from that surface. The deposits are usually formed by replacement of limestone, or allied calcareous rock. Apparently they are found both in relatively pure and in impure carbonate rock. The deposits are geoiogical bodies of a chemical and mineralogical character differing greatly from the adjoining intrusive rock and from the unaltered limestone. They are rich in silica and iron, with more or less of lime, magnesia, alumina, sulphur, and rarer metals like copper. The so-called contact-metamorphic silicates which form the gangue usually are coextensive with the metallic minerals, though of course not necessarily with the merchantable ore. All opinions agree in holding the deposits of epigenetic origin, later than the inclosing limestone. Regarding the origin of the metals and the genesis of the ores there are several opinions. 1. (communication to the Secretary*):—In operatioils requiring the expenditure of fuel, it is solely a question of supplying a certain number of heat-units at certain temperature-conditions. The difficulty of controlling these temperature-conditions is mainly responsible for low efficiency, unless utilizable waste heat is carefully applied either for the pre-heating of the air necessary for combustion, or for the heating of the raw materials, or in other departments of the works to generate steam, etc. A high theoretical or thermal efficiency very often does not establish a high " commercial" efficieiicy, and this fact is responsible for apparent crude practice in many arts. Coal is still very cheap in the East, and oil sells in the West for less than anywhere else in the world. Despite these favorable conditions, I believe that the list of references given in E. C. Eckel's book,' and also the contributions of C. Naske,2 will show that Mr. Eldred's statement, that a the study of the phenomena of applied combustion has been neglected," is not justified as far as the burning of cement is concerned. I have investigated the heat-balance of a lirne-kiln ailci the commercial advantage of using generator-gas for calcination. Mr. Eldred proposes to calcine the materials in the present type of rotary kiln, gas-fired with long-flame combustion, and to Pdke the fritted calcines to a special, gas-fired clinkering-kiln, which shall embody heat-regenerators. Research was conducted into cold briquetting dross arisings and metallurgical coke fines from an Imperial Smelting Furnace (I.S.F.) as an economic means of agglomerating fine materials for smelting in a blast furnace. A mechanism was postulated whereby strong bonds were developed within the briquettes; laboratory scale smelting trials and full scale plant trials are included in the paper with a description of a two tonne/hour briquetting pilot plant. Benefits from smelting briquettes in an I.S.F. were measured directly in metallurgical coke savings and, indirectly, by a significant improvement in sinter plant productivity.

THIS paper is a progress report on a study, of the distribution of the banded ingredients (Figs. 1 and 2) in- Illinois screenings and the method of determining their distribution. Proximate analyses and screen tests1 have been reported and a further report on the washability characteristics of the screenings is in preparation. The microscopic study of the screen-ings is not yet far enough advanced to permit a conclusive report on the effect of mining, screening and washing on the distribution of the banded ingredients in the coals of Illinois. However, considerable fundamental data-have been collected as a background for the screenings investigation and for a proposed study of fuels composed of known quantities of vitrain, clarain and fusain, the three common banded ingredients of Illinois coals. These fundamental data and the preliminary information now available from the microscopic study of screenings are broadly indicative of the reaction of the coals to the physical processes affecting them in mining and preparation. Proximate analyses of samples of vitrain, clarain, and fusain from several Illinois mines have been published 2, but those given in Table 1 serve to show the differences that are apparent in proximate analyses. The vitrain samples are consistently low in ash, and the unit-coal value is uniformly lower than in clarain. The average .fuel ratio (F.C./V.M.) of the vitrain samples in the table is 1.57-whereas the clarain average is 1.42. The fusain analyses vary considerably in ash and moisture. In the two samples from this mine the moisture values range from 8.99 to 22.80 and the ash from 4.86 to 16.91 per cent. Fusain has higher fixed carbon than either vitrain or clarain but the percentage is erratic from sample to sample.

The effect of stress on the creep rate of high-purity poly crystalline aluminum in the intermediate temperature range was investigated by conducting creep tests at a series of different stresses and by decreasing the stress abruptly during the course of primary and secondary creep. Three series of decreases in stress tests were conducted: the stress was decreased in primary and secondary regions of creep at 347.5°K and the stress was decrensed in primary creep at 327°K. The results demonstrate the effects of structure and temperature on the stress dependence of the creep rate. The trends in the creep rate after a drop in stress are complicated and show that recovery takes place. The experimental results were compared with Friedel's theory for cross-slip, the experimentally determined energy for a constriction being in good agreement with the theoretical estimate proposed by Stroh. PREVIOUS investigations have shown that the ap-- parent activation energy for creep of polycrystalline aluminum, over the range from about 250° to 380°K, is approximately 27,400 cal per mole,' a value that is to a first approximation insensitive to the applied stress, the creep rate, and the creep strain. Several facts strongly support the thesis that creep, in this temperature range, is controlled by the rate-determining mechanism of cross-slip: 1) Recovery of the cold-worked state can take place by a number of mechanisms prominent among which is climb and cross-slip. Astrom2 reported rapid recovery of cold-worked polycrystalline aluminum at 340° to 370°K giving an activation energy of 28,000 cal per mole and additional recovery at the higher temperatures of 455° to 478°K giving an activation energy of 36,000 cal per mole. Whereas the latter process was clearly identified with the climb mechanism, the former process. which has an activation energy in good agreement for that of creep in the same temperature range, is most likely due to recovery by thermally-activated cross-slip. 2) Single crystals of aluminum exhibit sharp slip-

Those chemists (they are still greatly in the minority) who use the spectroscope, use it very often, and find it almost indispensable. As a means of detecting minute quantities of the metals it is unrivalled. A metal can be readily distinguished in the presence of any other element, compound, or mixture without the necessity of separation. The qualitative analysis of the metallic constituents of a substance, which the spectroscope gives so easily, is a sure basis for planning a chemical analysis. As the determination of each element proceeds the purity of precipitates may be checked as often as desired. If, possessing these advantages, the spectroscope has been neglected in general chemistry, it is not surprising that it was neglected in metallurgical chemistry; for many of the impurities which are of industrial interest, even when they are present in a metal or alloy in small quantities, are not then always easily detected by the examination of their visible spectrum. The history of the development of the art has been given in Bureau of Standards 19cientific Paper No. 444. The Development of Analysis by Spectrogbaphy Fig. 1 shows, by means of photographs taken with a quartz spectro-graph, what a valuable region of the spectrum is excluded if one has a visual instrument only. Wave length 4023 is about the end of the visible spectrum, the region from 3800 to 1854 being invisible. It is easy to understand then how it is that the vigorous resuscitation of spectrum analysis which has commenced in the last few years has been associated with the use of the quartz spectrograph; notwithstanding that the most useful instrument for the general inorganic chemist to have at his elbow, after the balance, is a good visual spectrometer.(1) 1 The revival of spectrum analysis is to be attributed chiefly to the work of W. Although natural gas was first discovered in Northwest Arkansas in 1887, . near Fort Smith, Sebastian County, the literature contains very little information on the region, which is separated distinctly from the oil area of Southern Arkansas. For that reason this brief and concise report is a summary of developments from discovery to the present time. Northwest Arkansas produced 5,736,-ooo,ooo cu. ft. of natural gas during 1942, the trend of production having been generally upward over the past five years, as is shown in Fig. I. Since 1904 a reserve of 237 billion cubic feet of natural gas has been discovered in Northwest Arkansas, of which approximately 162 billion cubic feet have been expended, leaving a reserve of approximately 75 billion cubic feet available as of Jan. 1, 1943. A prolific new field discovered in Pope County Oct. 23, 1942, will add to the reserve of the region materially. Per well reserves, over-all, are unusually high because of the practice of multiple completion. As yet no commercial deposits of oil have been discovered in Northwest Arkansas. but the gas deposits have proved of immense value industrially, principally in the processing of zinc ore mined in the local area as well as that imported from distant states. With the war, new interest in the exploitation of the metallic ores of the region lends new significance to the gas reserves tabulated herein. Geological Discussion The region covered in this report comprises the Arkansas Valley from Pope County weslward to the Arkansas-Oklahoma state line as shown in Fig. 2. This valley is a westward trending structural trough with sharp-topped ridges and mesa-like mountains rising above the valley's undulating surface. It is bounded on the north by the Ozark Highlands and on the south by the Ouachita Mountains. The sedimentary beds of the Arkansas Valley are composed mainly of noniossil-iferous shales and sandstones. The rocks contain a high content of carbonaceous material and many coal beds are found in the region. The Gxed carbon ratios (ratio of fixed carbon to volatile combustible matter of surface coals) are very high and average about 80 per cent over the region covered in this report. Little or no calcareous material is present. Rocks of the Arkansas Valley are sharply folded, and igneous intrusive rocks cut the sedimentary beds at a few places. The Arkansas Geological Survey' made a detailed reconnaissance survey of the Arkansas Valley province in 1927, the purpose being to delineate the major structural features (Fig. 3) and to point out the possibilities of discovering addi. tional gas deposits. ASIDE from the John Fritz Medal, in which the Institute participates through its representation on the John Fritz Medal Board, the Institute itself has three major awards to make annually and one special prize for excellence in technical papers, as follows: The Robert W. Hunt Medal and- Prize, The J. E. Johnson, Jr., Award, the James Douglas Medal, and The Lewisohn Platinum Prize to senior members. ROBERT W. HUNT MEDAL AND PRIZE The partners of Robert. W. Hunt established a fund which was presented to the Institute at a fitting ceremony on May 27, 1920, to establish an annual medal and a sum of money to be awarded under the following rules: 1. The award shall consist of two prizes; first of a gold medal, second of a sum of money; a certificate to accompany each prize. The money prize shall not be awarded to a member over 40 years of age, but under unusual circumstances, both prizes may be allotted to one person provided that he is not over 40 years of age. In general it will be understood that the Committee shall award the money prize to the younger men, rather than the medal. 2. The awards shall be made not oftener than once a year to that person or persons contributing to the Institute the best on al paper or papers on iron and steel. The scope of the term "iron and steel" shall determined by the sub-committee considering the awards. In general, papers dealing with the practical side of the subject have preference over those dealing with the theoretical side in recognition of the fact that Captain Hunt's main contributions to the industry have been in the improvement of production and quality of material. 3. A sub-committee of three to five, including the Chairman of the Iron and Steel Committee, shall be appointed by the Iron and Steel Committee annually to adjudge the award subject to approval. 4. The awarding committee shall submit its report to the Iron and Steel Committee at its October Meeting, and the award be certified to the Secretary of the Institute in time to permit the presentation to be made at the Annual Meeting of the Institute. 5. The recipient of the award shall be designated "The Hunt Medallist." This prize is administered by the Iron and Steel Committee. J. E. JOHNSON, JR., AWARD This award is made from' the income of a. fund of $3000 donated by Mrs. Margaret Hilles Johnson in memory of her husband, J. E. Johnson, Jr., who was a prominent engineer, author of two valuable volumes on iron blast-furnace construction and practise, vice-chairman of the Institute's Iron and Steel Committee, and a frequent contributor of papers. to the Institute's Transactions. This prize is administered by the Iron and Steel Committee. The intent of the donor is to encourage young men in creative work in branches of the metallurgy or manufacture of pig iron with which the professional activities of Mr. Johnson were chiefly concerned. The control of the fund and distribution of the awards having been vested in the Board of Directors of the Institute, this Board has made the following regulations concerning it:

During the creep of coarse-grained polycrystalline magnesium at elevated temperatures, a nonbasal type of slip was found to play an important role in the deformation processes. The nonbasal slip traces were examined metallographically in eight specimens (13 grains) and the observed glide plane located stereographically for each grain. The tests were run at 500&apos; and 700°F at stresses of 148 to 786 psi. Based on these measurements and theoretical calculations, the crystallographic elements for nonbasal slip were determined. WHEN a metal deforms by slip, the conventional appearance of the slip bands on the surface of a specimen is that of straight lines. Such is the behavior of the face-centered-cubic metals, as for example, aluminum. The particular slip system on which slip occurs in these metals is governed by the criterion of resolved shear stress. Work on the body-centered-cubic metals a-iron,&apos;. &apos; molybdenum, and columbium4 has shown that the process of slip is somewhat more complicated than the simple gliding of one close-packed plane of atoms over another in a close-packed direction and that it results in the formation of wavy and irregular slip traces on the surface. The recent reviews and experiments of Vogel and Brick and Chen and Mad-din3 show that, for the body-centered-cubic metals, the resolved shear stresses along the planes and the degree of close-packing do not necessarily determine the slip system. Theirs and other investigations indicate that a complete understanding of the slip process in the body-centered-cubic metals is not yet possible. However, one behavior displayed by all these metals is that the slip direction is invariably one of the close-packed directions <11l>. The wavy nature of the slip-band traces has been explained on the basis of cooperative slip by planes sharing this same slip direction.1&apos;3l&apos; It is generally acknowledged that, when the hexagonal-close-packed metal magnesium (axial ratio c/a = 1.624) deforms by slip at room temperature, it does so by basal slip in the close-packed direction <1I%>. This type of slip has the conventional appearance of straight lines and is governed by the critical shear-stress law. Schmid and coworkers" showed that basal slip was operative in the temperature range of —185" to 300°C (—300" to 572°F). Work by Servi, Norton, and Grant6 has shown that, during the creep of coarse-grained aluminum at high temperatures, new slip systems come into operation. The existence of a new high temperature slip system at temperatures greater than 225 °C (437°F) for magnesium was suggested also by Schmid. This was later indicated by Bakarian and Mathewson&apos; to be slip along the pyramidal planes (10i1) in the close-packed direction <11%>.* They * Mention will be made in the text of pyramidal planes and prismatic planes. According to them, a possible cause for the appearance of the markings was due to "limited accessory slip on the pyramidal {10i2) planes." Burke and Hibbard," on deforming a single crystal of magnesium at room temperature, found evidence of slip on a pyramidal plane {1011). They explained it as being due to the effect of grip restraints. It is pertinent to note at this point that, although basal slip has received a fair amount of attention, only two specimens have been investigated, that of Bakarian and Mathewson and of Burke and Hibbard, to establish the elements of nonbasal slip in magnesium. A large number of firms and institutions have evaluated possibilities of mining the manganese nodule source, beginning with a major effort in 1957-58. There have been as many as ten commercial firms actively engaged in major programs of engineering and development, including Deepsea Ventures/Tenneco, Hughes Tool Co., Kennecott Copper Corp. and Ocean Resources, Inc. Foreign firms active in the field are International Nickel CO., Sumitomo Group/MITI, AMR (a joint venture of three West German companies-Metallgesell- schaft AG, Preussag and Salzgitter AG), and Societe le Nickel (CNEXO). It is estimated that it will take from 11 to 19 years for the more successful ventures to reach operational levels. Investment Costs and Rates of Return Five different programs, all from public sources, have been studied to analyze dollar figures regarding investment costs and the possible return on these costs. All are based on a unit of production of a million tpy of dry nodules through the processing plant, which is considered the minimum likely capacity. The costs are not always comparable, and with some liberties, have been forced into two categories. The first covers mining and sea-related costs. The second will include the onshore processing and other costs such as administrative and distribution figures. The costs in all cases are for complete ventures extending from prospecting through mining, processing and distribution of several metals and other products derived from the nodules. All costs are joint product costs, making certain comparisons with land mining difficult.

Over the past ten years, analysis of the acceptability of face ventilation systems has been based on numerical criteria rather than solely a study of air flow and methane patterns in the face area. This type of analysis has become possible primarily because of the instrumentation and mathematical models developed by the Ventilation Division, Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). To properly use these mathematical models, large amounts of methane and airflow data must be collected in the face area during mining activities. To supplement underground testing of face ventilation systems, a full scale model of a face area was built. This model includes a full scale model continuous miner, a face ventilation system, a gas release system, and a remote methane detection system. The remote methane detection system consists of an array of twelve methane sensors located throughout the face area. Data from the sensors are transmitted to strip chart recorders. Methane, air quantity, and other data collected during a test are entered into a computer for analysis. This paper presents the data entry system, the models used for data analysis, the test results, and the application of these results to a face ventilation system.

AN iron blast furnace of 1000 tons daily capacity will produce about 100,000 cu; ft. per minute of blast-furnace gas. This contains about 25 per cent of carbon monoxide, and has a B.t.u. value of about 95. This gas-is used primarily for heating the stoves of the blast furnace, and secondarily, under boilers, for steam production. Occasionally it is also used in gas engines. The raw gas coming out of the furnace carries about 10 grains of flue dust per cubic foot of gas, under best operating conditions. With the furnace "rolling" or slipping, this quantity may temporarily be greatly increased. This dust would, of course, deposit on the checkers of the stoves, or plug the burners under the boilers; therefore the gas must be cleaned.
