No oil territory in the world has been so rich in large producing wells, in a comparatively small area, as the Baku field. Particularly is this true of the Bibi Eibat field, which formerly produced millions of "poods," of " gusher," or as it is called in Russia, " fountain " oil. The Bibi Eibat and Balachany fields have been exhausted of gas and ruined by water, but the Surachany and Benegadi fields are still fountain territories and many outlying districts that have only been prospected produce rich fountains. The method of controlling fountains, or gushers, is the result of growth, along with the Russian system of drilling, where large diameters and riveted casing have been in vogue. The screw casing is seldom used except to exclude water. Formerly the method of finishing wells and the condition of the casing at the top of the well would not permit the use of gates, manifolds, and connections as is standard elsewhere. The life of the flowing wells is very short, particularly those 10 in. (25 cm.) or more in diameter, which produce large quantities of sand and often flow for but a few days and are then a complete loss. More than 1,000,000 poods in 24 hr. have been claimed in several instances, but in no case was the flow for more than a few days. The oil sands of this district are free uncemented sands and vary in thickness from paper thin to a maximum of 10 ft. (3 m.). The sands are interlaid with strata of soft clay. In spite of this, the practice has been to drill into such sands and produce from the open hole without screen or liners. Sometimes the casing is set below the oil sand but in this case holes from 2 ½ to 3 in. in diameter are drilled opposite the oil sand, which would not have the effect of a screen.

Fletcher Mill is located in the southern part of the New Lead Belt in Southeastern Missouri, in the northwestern part of Reynolds County. Shaft sinking began in July, 1964. The mill went on stream in February, 1967, and reached the designed rate of 5,000 tons per day in July, 1968. The ore occurs approximately 1,000 feet below the surface as disseminated deposits of galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite. There is no oxidation within the ore body and dissemination is not fine enough to present liberation problems with a normal grind. Mining is by the room and pillar method with rubber-tired diesel- propelled drilling and loading equipment. The ore is dumped through a 27-inch square grizzly into a 5,000-ton pocket. The underground primary crusher is automatically fed by a vibrating feeder and discharges directly into skip measuring bins. Hoisting is automatic, in balance, with 8. 5-ton skips dumping into a 1,000-ton mill bin. MILL The concentrator is a 5, 000 tons-per-day single section plant equipped to produce lead, zinc and copper concentrates. Contained under 35, 347 square feet of roof, without fine ore storage or remote crushing, and with sufficient automation to be operated by one man, the plant is compact, unique, and efficient in operation. THE little coal mine at Otsego, in the Winding Gulf field of southern West Virginia was dying. In the history of coal mining thousands of mines have been successful at first, but usually a change occurred and profits ceased. Often be change was so gradual and extended over such a length of time that the fundamental causes did not stand out in sharp relief and their significance was not realized. Studies often reveal that the cause for failure was in the arteries that connect the producing places with the mine entrance. Profits continued so long as the working places were close to the tipple and while the thrill of newness aid ease of access resulted in effective supervision from day to day. The air- way and haulageway, the wire line and manway, may have been sufficient when the distance from the entrance was a few hundred feet, but were inadequate when this was extended for thousands of feet.

THE investigation reported herein was undertaken to obtain data to supplement those presented in an earlier paper,' particularly for longer times at a higher temperature. This information may further develop our knowledge of the mechanism of diffusion in substitutional solid solutions. Diffusion of solute atoms interstitially dissolved is not difficult to visualize; it can take place without much disturbance of the solvent atoms. The mechanism of diffusion of solute atoms substitutionally dissolved is not so easily understood. Many theories have been advanced. Rosenhain,2.3 Frenkel,4 Smekal,5 Langmuir,3,6 Steigman, Shockley and Nix,7 and Johnson8 all proposed theories to explain diffusion. Langmuir's proposed mechanism consisted of a simple cyclic interchange of atoms involving an interchange in lattice positions of four or more atoms. This mechanism, accepted by the author at the time of his previous publication,' and apparently quite generally accepted, required a net exchange in positions of both solute and solvent atoms in equal numbers. In other words, the rate of diffusion of the solvent and solute atoms would be the same. That this cyclic interchange in lattice positions of solute and solvent atoms in equal numbers is the only true mechanism of diffusion is denied by the evidence presented in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE This modification of similar procedure1 will be outlined briefly. The method consisted of the following steps: I. A pure Muntz metal (60.6 per cent Cu, 0.1 per cent total impurities) that was almost all beta brass at 780°C. was chosen. 2. The brass was turned between centers in a lathe to a diameter of 0.5965 inches. 3. After the brass was cleaned, it was electroplated with pure copper to a diameter of about one inch. 4. The sample was heated slowly to 400°C. under reduced pressure and held at that temperature for 4 hr. to remove occluded gases. It was then cooled to room temperature. 5. The sample was heated to 780°C. ±3°C. and held at that temperature for different lengths of time; then quenched. Samples were cut off each time after quenching. Metallographic samples 34 in. thick were removed at I hr., 6 hr., 24 hr., 96 hr. and 701 hr. After 96 and 701 hr. samples of about I in. were removed for X-ray analysis. 6. The metallographic samples were polished on the cross section and photo-micrographs were taken. 7. The I-in. samples were polished and etched on both ends. With the aid of a microscope each was carefully mounted in a four-jaw chuck in a lathe, so that they could be accurately bored for an arbor. 8. Turnings were taken for each X-ray sample. After each set of turnings, the sample was heated in an oil bath for about 3a hr. at 300°C. It was then etched in 25

In the general study of coal, all evidence points in the one direction —that coals had their origin in a manner analogous to that of peat. The best method of studying coal, whether it concerns its chemistry, composition, or physical condition, is to study peat. The essentials in a study of peat are a knowledge of the chemistry of plants, knowledge of decay and of the transformation process of plant-substances into peat. A number of facts must be emphasized, namely, (1) peat is formed under wet conditions only; (2) plants grow in the place where peat is formed; (3) all the plant substances go into the bog; and (4) all the plant substances are subjected to a series of phases of decay which are (a) in the air completely above the water level but in relatively moist conditions; (b) above the water level, but covered by debris; and (c) completely submerged by both water and debris. Plant Chemistry Plant chemistry as a whole is remarkably well understood. The number of compounds composing plants is large, and it is not possible here to give even a comprehensive outline, but a classification into definite groups is possible; this is as follows: Carbohydrates; glucosides; pigments; tannins; acids, alcohols and ketones, etc., and their salts; essential oils; resins; vegetable bases; proteins; enzymes. Plant substances may also be grouped according to the role they play in the life of the plant, such as: Framework materials, living materials, food materials, protecting materials, waste materials. While this classification groups them well for. certain purposes, it does not group them exactly chemically; but in a consideration of the composition of coal, this is an excellent classification for our purpose here.

The hypereutectic Al-Si alloys 390 and A390 have wear characteristics superior to any of the more common aluminum casting alloys. This excellent wear resistance, coupled with good mechanical properties, high hardness, and low coefficient of thermal expansion, has made these alloys candidates for the all-aluminum internal combustion engine, the application for which they were primarily developed. A390 alloy is intended for sand and permanent mold casting, and requires a lower iron ccxltent (0.5 pct maximum) than its die casting companion 390 alloy (0.6 to 1.1 pct Fe). The 17 pct nominal silicon in these alloys provides sufficient quantities of the hard primary silicon phase to assure a high degree of wear resistance, yet little enough of this phase, to minimize the casting and m achining problems associated in the past with the hypereutectic alloys. The mechanical and physical properties of 390 and A390 alloys are competitive with the best of the common aluminum casting alloys with the exception of low ductility. This low ductility is not considered a detriment, since in many applications these alloys replace cast iron. Corrosion resistance is similar to the standard alloys 380 and 333. Numerous parts, of varying degrees of complexity, have been cast of alloys 390 and A390, including engine blocks and heads. The deviations from normal good handling and casting practices that are required for the alloys are those associated with the presence of the primary silicon. To obtain optimum strength and machinability, the molten alloys should be treated with phosphorus to refine the primary silicon phase. Care must be exercised to properly control the pouring temperature and rate in order to minimize primary silicon growth and segregation. AUTOMOTIVE engineers have for years recognized the advantages of lighter weight and better heat transfer that aluminum could offer as material of construction for engine blocks. These advantages alone, however, are insufficient justification for acceptance of aluminum engines by the automotive industry. To be acceptable, an aluminum engine first must pass all tests to which cast-iron engines are subjected, and, in addition, must represent no cost penalty in manufacturing. None of the conventional aluminum casting alloys have sufficient wear resistance to withstand the tests to which cast iron is subjected as a cylinder bore material, and recent attempts to manufacture aluminum engines with cast-in-place iron sleeves could not compete costwise with the equivalent cast-iron engine. The prerequisite to an acceptable aluminum engine seemed to be a casting alloy with a high degree of wear resistance that would eliminate the necessity of cast-in iron sleeves or liners. The hypereutectic A1-Si alloys 390 and A390 have met this challenge.' Combined with modified pistons and a patented cylinder bore surface finish,2 the performance of these alloys in more than 1300 cold start and cold scuff tests, over 3500 hr of dynamometer wear and endurance tests, and more than 350,000 miles of road tests leaves no doubt as to the feasibility of running on bare aluminum cylinder bores. ALLOY DEVELOPMENT The desirable characteristics of the hypereutectic A1-Si alloys have been recognized for some time. Their excellent wear resistance and low coefficient of thermal expansions have been used to advantage in the production of diesel-type pistons in Europe and to a limited extent in this country. The major contributor to the good wear resistance of these alloys is the extremely hard primary silicon phase in the microstructure. Although the percent silicon used experimentally has been much higher, most commercial alloys have ranged from about 14 to 25 pct. Generally, as the silicon content is increased, wear resistance increases, and the coefficient of thermal expansion decreases. With increases in silicon, however, machinability and cast-ability tend to suffer. The development of a satisfactory aluminum engine block material at Reynolds involved the testing and evaluation of many alloys, covering a wide range of silicon contents and numerous variations of iron, copper, magnesium, manganese, and other alloying additions. A paper by Hurst and van Ever-dingen in 1949 led to the practical solution of many nonsteady-state flow problems.' Subsequently, applications of this material have been discussed by several authors. The purpose of this note is to outline a simplified direct procedure for water-influx pressure predictions for pressures above the bubble point. The prcposed procedure is unique in that after the "time-conversion factor" and the "influx constant" are obtained, predictions are made without trial and error. The elimination of trial and error is made possible by expressing certain PVT characteristics as explicit functions of pressure. The procedure is applicable to fields producing at pressures above the bubble point and under radial water drive from an infinite aquifer. In the usual applications it is required to predict (1) withdrawals given future pressure history or (2) reservoir pressure, given future withdrawals or production. The theory, assumptions and conditions under which the nonsteady-state solutions hold are covered in the references and are not repeated. The simplified direct procedure outlined here has been developed from published solutions for the so-called "pressure case". A similar direct procedure for the same special conditions has been developed for the "rate case"; however, in this instance the procedure is lengthy and offers no advantage over the trial-and-error solution. Consequently, this paper covers only the procedure based on the pressure case. DISCUSSION Under the pressure case prediction of withdrawals from a water-drive field, given the future pressure history, involves the use of a nonsteady-state water-influx term together with the material balance equation. The solution of a particular problem requires the following steps: (1) division of past pressure and production data into equal time intervals; (2) computation of cumulative water influx vs pressure drop for each time interval of past history using the material balance equation; (3) determination of the best values for the "time-conversion factor" and the "influx constant" by equating the nonsteady-state influx term with the influx computed in Step 2 (this requires a trial-and-error procedure); (4) prediction of influx for a given pressure drop using the influx term and the computed factors from Step 3; and (5) calculation of fluids produced using the predicted influx in the material balance equation. A forecast of the water-oil ratio or water production rate is required to complete the calculation. It is assumed that a reliable estimate of original oil in place is available, as well as the production and pressure history, and data on reservoir fluid characteristics. If the original oil in place is unknown, it may be computed simultaneously with the tinie-conversion influx factors2,3. However, the oil in place so computed may be considerably in error3; consequently, it is usually preferable to use oil in place estimated from pore-volume data unless there is considerable doubt as to its accuracy. This paper discusses the development of surface coal mine planning programs for a microcomputer. A set of seven programs which were originally written for a large mainframe computer are described. The problems encountered in converting these programs to a micro with 52K of available core storage are discussed. A program for economic evaluation which is currently running on the micro is described and plans to convert other programs to the micro are detailed. In addition, we explain the microcornputer system we have assembled and give the rationale for each component. Problems we have encountered with this system are described for the benefit of others who may follow our path.

The use of the verb in this mood is not as common as formerly: at the time, for example, when the Bible was translated and the plays of Shakespeare were written. Nevertheless it is an essential part of literary English. In editing the 'Mining and Scientific Press' I do not insist upon the use of the subjunctive in articles that are contributed from the outside, but it is deemed proper in all our editorial writing. To speak plainly, the subjunctive is a mark of scholarship; it is ignored by those that are not particular in such matters, and unfortunately it is a source of perplexity to many that are entirely unfamiliar with the use of it. Therefore, as an editor, I think it well to allow the indicative mood to be used by contributors in sentences in which, to be strictly correct, the verbs should be in the subjunctive mood. The fact that most subjunctives are indistinguishable in form from indicatives is another cause of trouble to the uninitiated.* For example, the verbs in such phrases as "Suffice it to say", '(So help me God ", and "God save the King" are in the subjunctive. One reason why the subjunctive is becoming uncommon is the growing habit of expressing the subjunctive meaning by aid of auxiliary verbs that are coupled with the infinitive; thus: "It will sate to say" and "May God save the King". The subjunctive is common in subordinate clauses, and that is how it obtained its name, 'subjunctive', meaning

During the course of some magnetic investigations which the authors have under way, six bars of 0.43-carbon steel were tested, a permeameter designed after the Hopkinson yoke type being used. The results obtained were of some interest and although far from complete serve at least to show the necessity for a careful investigation of the previous history of the samples under study as well as the chemical composition. A steel of given chemical composition may assume a great variety of structures, depending on its treatment. Professor Sauveur has devised a very clear and effective means of illustrating this point. The accompanying microphotographs show some of the possible structures assumed by a 0.30 carbon steel (Fig. 1). It is now a well-established fact that a structural change is accompanied by changes in the tensile strength, elastic limit, hardness, etc., and it seems reasonable to assume also, a change in the magnetic properties. Six bars of a 0.43-carbon steel were used, all the bars being taken from the same rod and treated as follows: Bar 1. Heated to 1,100° and cooled in the furnace. Bar 2. Heated to 1,000° and cooled in the furnace. Bar 3. Heated to 900° and cooled in the furnace. Bar 4. Heated to 1,000° and cooled in air. Bar 5. Heated to 900° and cooled in air. Bar 6. Untreated. The bars were then turned to 13 mm. diameter and tested by the Hopkinson yoke method. After testing, three specimens were taken from each bar, one from each end and one from the middle. The homogeneity of the bars was tested in this manner and in no instance could any difference in structure in the three specimens1 be detected. Bars 1 to 3 inclusive are pearlitic in structure. ALTHOUGH some of the observers who first paid especial attention to the occurrences of oil and gas in the strata (such as Hunt in 1859, Andrews in 1861, Winchell in 1865, Mendelejeff in 1876, Höfer in 1876, Minshall in 1881, and I. C. White in 1883) seem to have been impressed with the fact that oil and gas deposits were connected with the disturbances in the rocks caused by their upheaval,1 yet, with the exception of Mendelejeff, and possibly Andrews, these observers do not appear to have understood what is really the one essential factor in the occurrence of oil and gas in the strata: viz., the faulting, uplifting, fracturing, fissuring, and jointing always accompanying even slight rock disturbances, and in certain districts (petroliferous provinces)2 allowing solfataric hydrocarbon emanations to force their way up from the interior and to reach and impregnate the porous portions of sediments subjected to the disturbances. Instead of this simple explanation to account for the observed connection between petroleum deposits and rock disturbances, most of the observers mentioned above, and many others who have followed them on the name lines since, have entirely reversed the problem. To them, instead of the dissemination of gases from fissures into the sediments, it presented the accumulation and concentration, according to anticlinal or other geologic structures, of oil and gas originally present throughout the whole mass of the strata where they were produced by the decomposition or distillation of organic remains. Whether this important problem involves accumulation from sources within the oil-bearing strata themselves, or infiltration and dissemination from outside sources, may be easily determined if all preconceived ideas are put aside and the established facts only are considered.
