The grain size of a metal or alloy is one of the most important factors determining its properties. In steels, for example, grain size affects hardenability, toughness and machinability; in brasses, grain size is related to hardness and deep-drawing quality. In the field of heat-resistant alloys, grain size has a marked effect on ductility, creep and endurance strength. In order to determine these effects, as well as to control the properties of materials, many accurate and rapid measurements of grain size must be made. This paper presents a new and improved method for the estimation of grain size. Usual Methods OF EvaluatiNg Grain Size A frequetly used method of estimating grain size is that of comparing the image of a polished and etched specimen on the ground-glass screen of a metallographic microscope with standard grain-size charts. Several types of standards are available for use with different classes of microstructures. Geometric Grids.—The Metals Handbook' has a series of hexagonal grids ranging in size from ASTM No. I to 8. Idealized Grain Networks.—Idealized grain.boundary networks for ASTM grain sizes I to 8 are included in the American Society for Testing Materials Tentative Standard E 19 - 39 T, standard Micrographs & Metals Handbook and ASTM Tentative Standard E19-3gT contain micrographs of hypo-eutectoid and hypereutectoid steels ranging in grain size from No. I to 8. The grain size of annealed brass (diameter of the average grain in millimeters) is obtained by comparison with 10 micrographs of varying. grain size in ASTM Tentative Standard E 2-39 T. A handicap to accurate evaluation of grain size by this method is the fact that it is difficult to compare photographs in a dimly lighted room with the image on the ground-glass screen, or, if the general illumination is increased so that the printed standards may be clearly seen, the contrast of the image of the unknown is decreased. It is easier to estimate grain size by comparing a micrograph of the unknown with the grain-size standards. However, photographing every specimen on which the grain size is desired is too costly in time and materials to be practicable. For hardened steels, the Shepherd or Jernkontoret fracture grain-size standards are very accurate and useful, but this method obviously cannot be applied to ductile alloys such as brass, stainless steels and austenitic heat-resistant alloys. Therefore in most of the media to which the metals are exposed they are constantly combining with the constituents of their environment, or in other words they are continually being corroded. Similarly, nonmetallic materials are corroded by undergoing chemical change. The rate at which corrosion takes place varies widely from metal to metal and medium to medium. In practically all cases the corrosion of metals in solutions (electrolytes) is electrolytic in nature and the rate of corrosion is dependent on many factors such as temperature, pressure, internal stresses, galvanic action, metal-ion concentration, and so on. In the chemical industry substances must be handled which are particularly corrosive to materials of construction. At the chemical plants of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd. (otherwise known as Cominco), situated at Trail, B. C., Canada, the following are some of the materials that have to be handled: Gases. Sulphur dioxide, sulphur trioxide, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, oxygen, hydrogen fluoride, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, and oxides of nitrogen. Liquids. Solutions of ammonium sulphate, ammonium sulphite, ammonium nitrate, caustic soda and potash, sulphuric acid, nitric acid, hydrofluo-silicic acid, hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid, aqua ammonia, and formic acid. Solids. Gypsum (containing phosphoric acid), ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate, phosphate rock, caustic soda, potash, and phosphate fertilizers.

THE formation of intermediate phase layers in cementation processes has been subjected to extensive qualitative investigation though to relatively little quantitative study; this work has recently been fully summarized by F. N. Rhines.1 It is necessary here only to enumerate the general conclusions drawn concerning the kinetic laws governing the growth of intermediate layers and to state what is known concerning the structural changes accompanying the generation of phase layers. I. When the intermediate phase is protective in type-i.e., when its density is less than that of the base metal, so that a continuous coating is formed and maintained the isothermal growth of the phase follows a simple parabolic equation: X2 = kt [I] where X is the thickness of the alloy layer, k the reaction rate constant, and t the time. The applicability of this equation to diffusion processes is tested by plotting the square of the thickness versus time, or by plotting the thickness versus the square root of time; the resultant achievement of a straight line in such. a plot has been con¬sidered sufficient proof of the validity of this equation. Exceptions have been found where liquid phases are involved in the reaction, where the diffusion layer is cracked,2 and where thin semimetallic oxide and sulphide coatings are formed on metals.3 In the first two cases the thickness increases linearly with time, and in the latter it is a logarithmic function of time. 2. The rate of thickening varies with temperature according to the Arrhenius equation k = Ae-Q/RT [2] where k is the parabolic rate constant of Eq. I, or some other rate-descriptive function, A is the action constant, e the base of natural logarithms, Q the heat of activation, R the gas constant, and T absolute temperature. This equation has been found to be generally valid except when transformations occur during reaction in either the base metal or in the reaction layer; in such instances Eq. 2 is still applicable with different values for the constants A and Q above and below the transformation temperature. 3. All phases that are stable at the temperature at which diffusion occurs will appear in the interdiffusion of two components. In some cases certain of the phases may be too thin to be observed and identified easily. Nonequilibrium phases have never been noted in thick reaction layers; i.e., layers of a thickness that may be discerned microscopically. The relative, thickness of each phase in a diffusion layer is proportional to the concentration gradient and to the rate of diffusion in that phase .4 The reaction layers tend to have a

THE AUTHOR hopes that this paper will meet with criticism and debate by fellow members of the Institute rather than with that attitude of passiv-ity and indifference which one is inclined to adopt when considering a field completely foreign to one's own experi-ence. After several years of study of voluminous literature, maps, and statistics, and many personal journeys and field inspections of various parts of Siberia, the conclusion is reached .that the area adjacent to the Stanovoi, Zhugd-Zhur, and Yablonoi ranges as below defined is that which .is most accessible to the western world and will soonest give results from exploration. HISTORY The first incursion of the Russians into Siberia east of the Yenesei River appears to have been in 1632 when the fort of Yakutsk was founded on the middle Lena. The early expeditions were in quest of furs. As the Siberians say, "the sable beckoned" and the post of Anadyr was founded in 1639, two thousand miles further northeast. Thus nineteen years after the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts, the Russians had established a trading post within 700 miles of what is now the town of Nome, Alaska. Parties of Cossaks penetrated to the shores of the Okotsk1 Sea early in the seventeenth century, but it was not until 1688 that the town of Okotsk was founded. In 1712 a grand project was elaborated at St. Petersburg for building a port at Okotsk, but it came to nothing. Vitus Bering, the Alaska explorer, built ships at Okotsk, and made this his point of depar-ture. It is stated that the iron work used in these ships was brought overland partly from Yakutsk, and partly even from St. Petersburg, 5500 miles away. Accord-ing to report a copper deposit was worked on the river Urak, not far from the coast, and copper was smelted for sheathing the bottoms. Grassgrown mounds con-taining slag and shots of copper were inspected by the writer last summer, at the site of the ancient shipyard.

Of the potential applications of nuclear explosives to mining, excavation is perhaps the most obvious and the best understood, and probably the most practical for use in the near future. Large quantities of rock and earth can be moved by proper emplacement of nuclear explosives, but economic and practical relationship must be determined between the known capabilities of nuclear explosives and the required excavating to remove overburden. On an energy yield basis, even the cheapest of the present commercial explosives cost more than the most expensive nuclear explosive. Comparing the energy yield of a megaton thermonuclear device with the yield of TNT shows that one energy yield per dollar is 400 times greater for the thermonuclear device. However, small-yield nuclear devices (a few 10's of kilotons yield) are less efficient blasting materials than chemical explosives, with the result that the heat of explosion is utilized less effectively. While only 1 lb of conventional explosive is required to excavate 1 cu yd of rock, or about 2 million cu yd per kiloton, nuclear devices excavate from 100,000 to 300,000 cu yd per kiloton. This changes the economic situation, and it is thus apparent that nuclear explosives are cheaper only for the large explosions.

An elaborate series of experiments has been conducted during the past three years at Irvington, N. J., which has resulted in the perfection of a process for the manufacture of smokeless fuel from high-volatile coals, and for the recovery and refinement of the coal-tar products derived therefrom. These experiments have been financed by Messrs. Blair & Co., of New York, and were conducted under the direction of Charles H. Smith, a member of this Institute, and the inventor of the process. The low-temperature distillation of coal has interested investigators for many years. Sporadic attempts have been made to solve the mechanical problems, but until the Smith process was developed, they were not carried to conclusions of economic value. The present coal shortage and the increasing demand for smokeless fuels make this subject one of timely interest. DescRiption of Plant The following equipment was installed and operated during the experimental period: Four horizontal and two vertical units of commercial size for the low-temperature distillation of the coal; two vertical, two horizontal, and two inclined benches for distillation of the briquets at medium and higher temperatures; presses and auxiliary equipment necessary for making briquets; and a complete byproduct recovery and tar-refining plant. This commercial equipment is provided with gas and electric meters, pyrometers and other apparatus for recording accurately the results of all experiments. There is, in addition to the commercial equipment, a complete chemical laboratory with distillation and recovery apparatus, including facilities far refining and cracking the tar and measuring the yields and calorific value of the gas. This apparatus makes possible a study on a small scale, of the various problems involved in the process. Description of Process Mr. Smith's experiments have resulted in the production on a commercial scale of: 1. A fuel, called Carbocoal, which, for convenience in handling, is prepared in briquet form.

These notes are based on observations made while on a recent trip through the West, for the purpose of studying the practical operation of the ball-mill. The writer takes this opportunity to express his thanks for courtesies extended at the many plants visited as well as for the valuable data received: While there are several types of ball-mill on the market, particular attention will here be given to the diaphragm type, as the open-trunnion type, especially the conical mill, has been thoroughly discussed in the Transactions. There is a prevailing impression that the ball-mill is a recent development; however, ball-mills were used extensively in Montana and other western states for crushing ores for concentration as far back as 1808. Its present prominence is due in part to its recent successful application by one of the large copper companies. Without any reference to dry grinding, the first successful ball-mill for wet crushing, which is still in operation, was built 10 years ago.l This mill, designed by Erminio Ferraris for crushing Sardinian ores for concentration, is of more than passing interest. It embodies the peripheral discharge with grates, large forged-steel balls, and the principal features of the modern ball-mill. The results approach present-day practice, the chief differences being that the mechanical construction has been improved in the modern types. Crushing Action of Ball-mill The action of the balls and the principles of crushing have been studied by several investigators.2 Their conclusions are confirmed by results obtained by the writer in experimenting with a small machine built at

An impoRtant factor affecting the rate and nature of corrosion of metals and alloys is the film, or coating, formed on the surface; and this may accelerate or retard corrosive action once started. The formation of films and coatings is intimately associated with the chemical composition and physical constitution of both the metal and the corroding medium. A film or coating may be either the corrosion product resulting from oxidation; that is, an oxide or salt, or a deposition of suspended matter from the corroding media upon the surface of the metal, or a mixture of both. The coating may adhere tightly or loosely to the surface of the corroded metal. In short, a film or coating is the reaction product of the corroding medium and the metal, which adheres to the surface of the metal and with which may be intermingled material from the attacking media not concerned in the chemical reactions. As the terms film and coating are used by different writers for very different things, distinction is made between the two, by the present writers, on the basis of thickness. Thus, a film is defined as a corrosion product or deposition, on the surface of a corroded metal, that is of such thickness that it cannot be measured by the metallurgical microscope. A coating, on the other hand, is of such thickness that it can be measured. If the resolving power of the 2-mm. (equivalent focal length) apochro-matic oil immersion objective (N.A. 1.4) is taken as the limit of the microscope, the limiting resolution is two lines that are 0.0002 to 0.0004 mm. apart. It is thus possible to measure coatings that are greater than 0.0002 to 0.0004 mm. thick. This thickness is equivalent to 50,000-

A summary of recent progress in understanding the main factors affecting the pelletization of fine particles is presented. A scheme for categorizing the mechanisms responsible for pellet growth is out- lined and laboratory methods to both identify the important growth mechanisms and quantify the effects of the major factors influencing the rate of pelletization are described. Next laboratory and mathematical simulations of the commercial process involved in pelletizing iron ore concentrates, are presented. The operational instabilities associated with this pelletization process are described and subjected to a control theory analysis. This analysis, in conjunction with the mathematical models, is used to both explain existing control problems and assess the effectiveness of possible circuit redesigns at producing a more stable and controllable operation. Although much of the discussion is in the context of iron ore pelletizing the approach developed to analyze the agglomeration behavior of these concentrates should apply to most other fine particle systems.

IN the flotation of iron ores laurylamine derivatives have been used for considerable time.1, 2' To effect satisfactory separation of the gangue, pre-dominantly silica, from the iron oxide minerals, the addition of specific depressants for the iron oxides has been found necessary. Starches and starch products have been used for this purpose.V here is, however, very little published information on the effects of these materials and other variables on this process. In some cases it has been found that prior acid scrubbing and desliming are essential," and depending upon the efficiency of the subsequent washing step, there will be accompanying changes in pH. It was the object of this investigation to test and observe the effects of the above factor as well as to examine and compare the action of various starches and starch products. Ore Preparation The ore used in this experiment was a wash-ore tailing obtained from the western Mesabi range. Microscopic examination and x-ray analysis of the ore showed it to consist of hematite, goethite, and quartz. Physical properties of the iron minerals ranged from hard and crystalline to earthy and ocherous. The quartz grains were discolored either because of iron-oxide inclusions or because of a sur-face coating of iron oxide. The ore assayed 27.52

Both the room-temperature and 600°F (315°C) primary solid-solution phase boundaries for the silver comer of the Ag-Cd-In temary system have been determined using X-ray diffraction and metallo-graphic techniques. Solid solubility of indium in silver at room temperature and 600°F (315°C) is shown to be between 20.3 and 21.7 wt pct, and corrects the previously extrapolated value of 18 wt pct appearing in the literature. The solid solubility of cadmium in silver at room temperature, not previously established, is shown to be between 34.9 and 41.3 wt pct. The solid solubility of cadmium in silver at 600°F (315°C) is confirmed as 43.2 wt pct. The shape of the primary phase boundary line for the subject temary system appears straight at room temperature and curves con-vexly towards the solvent (silver) comer at 600°F (315°C). THIS investigation was undertaken to initiate development of the Ag-Cd-In ternary diagram by establishing the primary solid-solution phase boundary in the silver corner of the diagram. At the present time, a diagram for this ternary system is not available, while this system appears to offer potential for a variety of uses. One alloy in the system has already proven to be useful as a control rod material in nuclear reactors.1"3 To encourage additional exploration of the potential of the system an understanding of its ternary diagram would be beneficial. It is towards this end that the present study is directed. LITERATURE SURVEY In undertaking this study, a comprehensive literature survey was first conducted to find information that would be useful for guidance. Useful knowledge did result from investigating the respective solubilities of indium and cadmium in silver as indicated in the binary constitutional diagrams of the systems Ag-In and Ag-Cd and also reviewing possible shapes of ternary primary phase boundaries. Weibke and Eggers~ used metallographic techniques to establish the system In-Ag as illustrated in Fig. Is This diagram shows that silver in the solid state is capable of dissolving approximately 18 wt pct In. This solid solubility of indium in silver holds true from room temperature up to 1276°F (691°C), then decreases continuously up to 1'761°F (960.5"C), the melting point of the silver. The solid-solubility limit of indium in silver established by Weibke and Eggers has been confirmed by Hume-Rothery and Reyno1ds. G Durrant' used a method which consisted of microscopic examination of quenched specimens to establish the Cd-Ag system as displayed in Fig. 2.' The primary phase boundary of Fig. 2 proved to be in good agreement (ie., within 1 wt pct) with other studies*'1' of the Ag-Cd system made using X-rays and metallog-

One year ago, that is in January, 1923, there had not been constructed a single oil-storage tank of 55,000-bbl. or more capacity with a completely electric welded roof and bottom. Today, there are at least fifty 80,000-bbl. storage tanks completed, or nearing completion, on which both the roofs and the bottoms are electric welded. It is the purpose of this paper to describe, in a general way, the construction of these welded roofs and bottoms, and to give their advantages over riveted construction. All of the following data and conclusions were obtained from observations made during the welding of tanks by the Welding Engineering Co. at Texas City, Tex., and Tonkawa and Burbank, Okla. As far as can be determined, the first electric welding on large tankage was completed in May, 1922. At that time the Empire Companies of Bartlesville, Okla., discovered a badly leaking bottom in a 55,000-bbl. tank at El Dorado, Kans. They had considered concreting this bottom, but because of the much smaller cost, decided to try electric welding; so a contract was given the Welding Engineering Co. of Bartlesville, Okla. In this instance, no new sheets were added, the bottom being repaired by electric welding of all seams and rivets, Fig. 1. In some places where the original rivets were missing, the holes were filled by welding; patch plates were also added at certain badly worn spots. INTRODUCTION What is automation? Why automate? Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary defines automation as "the automatically controlled operation of an apparatus, process or system by mechanical or electronic devices that take the place of human organs of observation, effort, and decision." This definition gives an implied answer to the second question, )"Why automate?" Automation, automatic control devices and process control equipment receive their justification in supplementing or replacing manpower, which results in decreased operating costs. In the past, processes were operated with a minimum of instruments for the purpose of merely guiding the operators. Processes were manually controlled by the operator on the basis of simple temperature, pressure, flow and level indications on a panel. Today the tendency is to design a new plant to operate in a fully automatic manner according to a preset pro- gram utilizing a minimum of manpower. In addition to this direct cost reduction savings in manual labor, increased equipment capacity results from uniformity of flow and uniform control of process variables. This control eliminates or minimizes surges and permits equipment to be operated at or near its ultimate capacity and, for a given material through- put, permits the use of smaller process equipment. Automatic control, therefore, be it in the field of coal processing or in any industrial field, is simply a problem of economics. Control equipment is justified in terms of its contribution toward increasing productivity, increasing profit margins or producing a new and saleable product at a profit. Instruments and control devices can be divided into two general groups: (1) units which measure, and (2) units which both measure and control a process variable. In coal processing, the first class of instruments, those which measure only, include analytical devices such as automatic ash, moisture and sulfur measuring units and the simple pressure, temperature, flow and level indicating devices mentioned previously. The second group of instruments, those which both measure and control, include a wide variety of units such as continuous weighing devices on conveyor belts and photoelectric cells which gauge the position of railroad cars on the track and insure that the cars are in the proper location for loading (see Chapter 15). The latter types of units as used in the coal industry differ from those used in other industries in one significant point. In coal processing these instruments need not be as highly sophisticated and accurate as in other industries; hence their cost is proportionately lower than in other industries. DEPRECIATION allowances have become firmly rooted in our income tax structure both by legislation and by court decisions. Secretary of the Treasury Morgenthau has recently stated before the Ways and Means Committee of the House: A taxpayer who did not provide for depreciation of assets used in his business could not long remain in business and the income tax should be levied on the assumption that he will provide for such depreciation. The 1934 Revenue Act has now been enacted, the depreciation provisions of the 1932 Revenue Act having been carried forward without change. However, there has arisen, in connection with the preparation of this new Revenue Act, a determination by the Treasury Department to make certain changes in the future administration of the depreciation allowances that will affect all corporations, and mining companies in particular.

THIS paper is a progress report covering metallographic applications of the electron microscope that have been made during the past year at Carnegie Institute of Technology. An account is presented of the techniques that have been most satisfactory, the difficulties encountered, the resolution obtained, and the peculiarities that have been noted in the microstructures. About 12m exposures have been made during the year on the instrument, which is an RCA type B2 transmission microscope,1 and a number of these have been selected to illustrate the results obtained. Prints are also included showing the common types of falsities-to borrow a term from the biological field, the "artifacts." In brief, the paper is a record of our attempt to determine the value of the electron microscope in the study of the structure of metals and alloys. n addition to comments on techniques and the quality of photomicrographs obtainable with them, the paper discusses the nature of the etch attack on a few metals, and the possible relation between the fine structure revealed by etching and the mosaic block structure of the grains. Since numerous papers and reviews are available on the subject of imperfection in crystals, the comments here may be very brief; in fact, are restricted almost entirely to points having to do with recent theories relating the strength of metals to imperfections and to spacings of slip lines. SPECIMEN PREPARATION AND PHOTOGRAPHS Mechanical polishing by hand was used throughout this work. Precautions that must be taken in microscopy at high magnification, which have been well explained by Vilella in his book on Metallographic Technique for Steel, are likewise important with the electron microscope. This applies particularly to the need for repeated polishing and etching (each successive polish becoming less severe and each etch lighter), since the final etch should in general be no heavier than is used for oil-immersion optical microscopy and in many instances should be much lighter (compare Figs. 6a and 7a, 6d and 7b). An extremely light etch, of course, is incapable of cutting through a flowed layer of appreciable thickness. Unquestionably it would be very advantageous in each instance to compare the structures obtained by electrolytic polishing with those obtained by mechanical polishing, but difficulties with the electrolytic method have prevented this in the following collection of prints. The choice of etchant is important, of course; for example, picral proved superior to nital for tempered martensite. With the exception of Figs. Ib and IC, the replicas used were of silica, deposited up0n polystyrene and floated from the polystyrene in ethyl bromide according to polystyrene in ethyl bromide according to the method of Heidenreich and Peck.2 The samples were mounted in Bakelite, polished and etched, then the polished Bakelite

FLUORSPAR is found in most of the states from the Rocky Mountains westward, and commercial production of the mineral has been reported from Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Washington. The map in Fig. 1 indicates the general distribution of many of these deposits but it is by no means complete. In the summer of 1926 the writer examined certain deposits of fluor-spar in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico and Washington; in November, 1927, revisited the Jamestown, Colo., district, and in earlier years examined deposits in Colorado and New Mexico. Based on notes of his own and. on descriptions and other data by H. A. Aurand, H. W. Davis, R. B. Ladoo, V. C. Heikes, W. D. Johnston, Jr., and by producers of fluorspar, he prepared the following brief descriptions of deposits and estimates of reserves of fluorspar, originally for the use of the subcommittee on fluorspar of the Joint Committee on Foreign and Domestic Mining Policy and on Industrial Preparedness respectively of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Descriptions of many fluorspar deposits in various western states and districts have been published. It is not feasible to summarize this literature here, but the appended bibliography will indicate to the interested reader what papers are available.

IT is no great exaggeration to say that present grinding practice and economics are largely determined by lining design. A record of outstanding liner wear can be achieved with any liner surface pattern that will positively lock the outer layer or layers of grinding media. With no slippage, lining wear is bound to be slight. At the same time, popular practice calls for tumbling loads of about 50 pct of mill volume to obtain maximum grinding capacity. Innumerable parallel grinding investigations have verified that optimum speed for such a mill lies within 70 to 85 pct of theoretical critical speed. If the mill is speeded up to 100 pct of critical, little or no grinding can be accomplished. Earlier Work on Supercritical Grinding: First investigations concerning grinding at supercritical speeds seem to be very old. Remarkable work on the subject has been performed by White,1 and his experiments have been described and summarized by Richards1 White's contributions seem to have passed unnoticed by Fahrenwald, 2,3 whose extensive experiments have been well presented, yet apparently very little appreciated. Additional work on grinding at supercritical speed has been reported, e.g., by Lewenson and Tscherny,4 USSR; Anselm5 and Grunder,6 Germany; and Rose and Evans,[6] Great Britain.

At the August meeting of the Geological Society of America, I presented a paper on the occurrence of alunogen and bauxite upon the Upper Gila river, about 40 miles north from Silver City, New Mexico, together with observations upon the geology of that region." Inasmuch as the subject is specially interesting to metallurgists and mining engineers, and as our Transactions contain recent important papers, by Dr. Hayes, M. Laur, of France and others, upon bauxite, I venture to offer to the Institute, in more condensed form, an account of the deposits described in the paper above referred to.
