The effects of selected alloying elements on the elevated-temperature tensile properties of copper alloy -tungsten fiber reinforced composites were invcstigated. A cornparison of the elevated-temperature tensile properties of copper alloy - tungsten fiber reinforced composites, representing soluble systems. was made with copper - tungsten fiber reinforced composites, representing a mutually insoluble system. A linear relation between tensile strength and volume percent fiber content existed at elevated temperatures for all the systenzs investigated. The copper alloy composites were weaker in tension at high volume percent fiber contents than copper composites in which alloying with the fiber did not occur. The tensile strength of the alloyed tungsten fiber decreased with increasing penetration of the alloying element into Ihe tungsten fiber. THE technique of combining strong fibers with relatively weak matrix materials so that the fibers are load-carrying members has been utilized for many years in the reinforcement of plastics with glass fibers. This type of strengthening is currently being extended to include the reinforcement of metals with metallic fibers. Investigations of the room-temperature tensile properties of metal-fiber-reinforced metallic composites have been numerous,'-" but the study of tensile properties at elevated temperatures has been limited. In previous work done at the Lewis Research Center' composites consisting of mutually insoluble constituents were investigated. Composites were made of copper reinforced with uniaxially oriented tungsten fibers. The stress-strain behavior and tensile properties of the composites were related to the tensile properties of the base materials. The tensile strength of the composite was directly proportional to the volume percent of tungsten fiber present, and the full strength of the fiber was realized. THE thesis of this article is that the age of Newton is now coming to a close, and that recent scientific discoveries have in store an even greater revolution in our entire outlook than the revolution effected by the discovery of universal gravitation by Newton. The revolution that now confronts us, arises from the recent discovery of new facts, the only interpretation of which is that our conviction that nature is understandable and subject to law arose from the narrowness of our horizons, and that if we sufficiently extend our range we shall find that nature is intrinsically and in its elements neither understandable nor subject to law. The new experimental facts are in the realm of quantum phenomena. Comparatively little has been written for popular consumption about this new realm which has opened in the last fifteen years. The man in the street has been much more interested in relativity, which to him has seemed extremely interesting and revolutionary. Occasionally, however, there has filtered down to him the news that nearly all the theoretical physicists are occupied with a new order of phenomena which they find very much more exciting and revolutionary than any in the realm of relativity. For after all is said and done, the practical effects of relativity, measured in ,dollars and' cents or in centimeters and grams, are exceedingly small, and require specially de- signed experiments executed by men of the highest skill to show their existence at all. The phenomena with which quantum theory deals, on the other hand, are of the greatest practical importance and involve the simplest aspects of everyday life. For example, before the advent of the quantum theory no one could explain why a tea kettle of water boiling on the stove should not give out enough light in virtue of its temperature to be visible in the dark; the accepted theories of optics demanded that it should be visible, but every burned child knew that it was not.

GRATON, Cambridge, Mass.-May I ask, in connection with one point in the summary, to what extent the author regards actinolite equivalent to tourmaline as an index of high-temperature and presumably magmatic conditions of deposition of the accompanying sulphides? W. E. GARY.-I merely advanced the idea that the mineral actinolite might have some such significance. In the copper deposit at Braden in South America, the ore occurs in an andesite breccia which is cemented by a matrix of sulphides, quartz, and tourmaline. Tourmaline is a high-temperature mineral, and when we find it associated with ores, these are regarded as having come from a volcanic or deep-seated source, hence a primary hypogenetic deposit. Thus we can count on greater continuation of the ore with depth than in some other kinds of deposit, and I thought that the actinolite, being also a high-temperature mineral, might have some such bearing in the case of Mount Morgan. I did not advance this idea as a final conclusion from a study of such phenomena, but thought that it might bear some discussion in view of the fact of the peculiar occurrence of this mineral in a notable orebody. It also occurs with the copper ores at Ducktown, Tenn., and in both cases may only be due to general regional metamorphism.

Statistical methods are becoming increasingly important for interpreting routine reports, or for analyzing special test data in industrial plants, such as steel plants. They have already become practically a necessity to the plant metallurgist. A paper by Chancellor, 1 written in 1933, gives many examples of the benefits the plant metallurgist can derive from the use of these methods. The present paper discusses applications of importance to many others who must analyze reports in the steel plant, as well as other examples of interest to metallurgists. Statistical Methods Logically Suited to Plant Problems.—Statistical methods are not new as a branch of mathematics. Until comparatively recently, however, practical applications were confined mainly to actuarial science, biology, and economics; fields in which an observed result is obviously influenced (and often determined) by a complicated set of variables more or less constantly tending to affect it. As pointed out by Daeves,2 a decade or more ago, problems in industry are basically similar to those in these other fields in that a given result is at least partly due to that chance combination of causes happening to be present at the time. When trying to do the same thing repeatedly, constant results are never attained; they vary about the desired result with more or less well defined mathematical regularity. Such a condition arises out of the great number of factors tending to affect the final result. If statistical methods are so valuable to the biologist or economist, why then should they not also be of great value to plant managers and engineers, and to all who must interpret reports from various sources in the industrial plant? Within the last few years, industry has become conscious of this situation, and the use of these methods has been rapidly expanding in such p1ants. The possibility has been mentioned that large pressure gradients in a solution gas driven field caused by high production rates might lead to a reduction in the ultimate recovery obtainable compared to that which would be obtained by a very slow rate of production. In the present study the reservoir conditions accompanying a high rate of production and the corresponding ultimate recovery were compared with those obtained if the reservoir were produced at some marginal rate throughout its entire life. The method of calculation involved the application of fluid flow - material balance analysis to a series of successive steady state conditions in the reservoir. In the case studied very little difference in recovery was obtained at the abandonment pressure. An analysis of the basic factors involved indicates that the sane results would hold for considerable variation in properties of reservoir fluids, permeability of the formation or well spacing. Even if the reservoir has a water drive it appears that no harm will be done by- open flow production if the rate is cut back before any appreciable free gas is produced. However, any condition which leads to disproportionate withdrawal rates and which causes large pressure differences over large areas might result in substantial loss in ultimate recovery. INTRODUCTION When the pressure declines in a reservoir, gas is evolved from solution causing a shrinkage in the reservoir oil so that a stock tank barrel of oil with its residual dissolved gas occupies a smaller volume than originally. For a given reservoir oil saturation, therefore. stock tank oil content will be higher at the lower pressure. At the same time the evolved gas which remains in the reservoir reduces the reservoir oil saturation, and this would be expected perhaps to cause a reduction in stock tank oil content. However, around the well the shrinkage occurs so rapidly that stock tank oil may actually accumulate in this region in spite of the simultaneous reduction in reservoir oil saturation. If this accumulation should continue, spreading into a larger zone, the loss might be appreciable and because larger pressure gradients accompany higher rates the accumulation might possibly be large if wells are produced at too high a rate. It is the purpose of this paper to determine the effect of rate of flow on ultimate recovery by solution gas drive. The problem under consideration involves the unsteady state flow of oil in a closed radial system from which oil is produced by the evolution of gas as a finite drawdown is estalllished and the reservoir pressure declines. A somewhat similar unsteady state production problem dealing, however, with a linear system has been considered by Muskat and Meres, but these authors do not discuss the effects which rate may have on recovery. Other methods have been reported for estimaling recovery as a function of pressure decline when producing at an infinitesimal rate, and Muskat and Taylor' have shown the effect of fluid and reservoir characteristics on recovery under these conditions. Assuming steady state to exist, Babson has given a procedure for computing the decline in well productivity as the field is depleted, and Moyer has combined these methods to estimate abandonment conditions and the resulting ultimate recovery. These latter approaches to the problem either do not consider the effect of rate or assume steady state can be established. In detail this paper presents the behavior of the reservoir producing under unsteady state conditions and considers the effect of production rate during this unsteady state flow on the recovery attained. The analysis also shows that there will exist at abandonment a type of steady state, and on this basis a method has been clevelopetl for rapid calculation of abandonment conditions.

IN the spring of 1952 Calumet and Hecla Inc. began a geophysical program near Shullsburg, Wis., in the Wisconsin-Illinois lead-zinc district, to assist the geological and drilling exploration programs. Sphalerite, the ore mineral in this area, occurs with a considerable amount of marcasite. In general the higher the percentage of sphalerite in the ore, the higher the percentage of marcasite; however, there may be mineralized zones high in marcasite but low in sphalerite. Orebodies in general are relatively narrow and elongated. Reconnaissance exploration of virgin areas consisted of drilling along lines at 500 to 1000-ft intervals. Whenever a mineralized zone was intersected additional drilling was done to determine whether or not the zone carried zinc percentages of ore grade and, if so, to delineate the body. Calumet and Hecla Inc. was interested particularly in a method that would show the direction and position in which to drill from the original discovery hole. This suggested a method of contacting the orebody, which occurs at depths ranging from 100 to 200 ft, with one electrode. After a number of procedures had been considered it was decided to use equipotential line methods. Instrumentation and Field Procedure: The power source used was a 400-cycle Signal Corps motor-generator having a rated output of 1200 w at 115 v. The detection unit consisted of test probes, a two-stage amplifier, and &apos;head phones for determining the equipotential line by audio null. Field procedure consisted of contacting the sulfide body in the hole by a specially built spring-loaded expanding electrode which would be lowered into the hole, in the closed. position, until it reached the mineralized zone. At that point the mechanism was released so that the arms would make contact with the walls of the hole in the same manner that a well-bore caliper does. This electrode was then connected to the generator, the other terminal of which was connected to the surface electrode. The surface electrode was either a point, a straight line, or a circular line electrode. The point surface electrode was placed at a considerable distance from the hole, that is, 2500 to 5000 ft, depending somewhat upon the depth to the sulfide zone and the distance from the hole containing the subsurface electrode to which exploration was considered. A higher voltage output from the power source would have been desirable, although no difficulty was encountered in determining null points to a distance of 500 ft. Straight line electrodes used were approximately 1000 ft in length at a distance of approximately 1000 ft from the hole containing the subsurface electrode. The circular line electrode used consisted of 4400 ft of bare No. 10 copper wire, which provided a circle of 700-ft radius. All line electrodes were fastened to the ground at 20-ft intervals with copper staples 4 in. long. Equipotential points were determined at 25 to 100-ft intervals. Location of the points was made by plane table and stadia. In open country with a three-man crew, the points were plotted as they were determined. With a two-man crew, pegs were placed at equal potential points and surveyed in after several equipotential lines were determined. Although interpretation of results given in this paper is qualitative, the paper as a whole would not be complete without a discussion of the theoretical distribution of potential due to a circular line electrode. The theoretical distribution would be required if a quantitative interpretation of the measured potential distribution were to be made. The theoretical potential distribution due to a circular line electrode can be obtained by means of Legendre polynomials. Exploratory drilling in South Central Texas for the year 1944 showed a marked increase over that of 1943 and resulted in a similar increase in new fields discovered. In this area, which comprises the 30 counties included in district No. I, Oil and Gas Division, Railroad Commission of Texas,? 61 exploratory wells were drilled during 1944 as compared with 29 exploratory wells drilled during 1943, or an increase of over 100 per cent. Three new oil fields, two new gas fields and one gas-distillate field were discovered during the year, as compared with one new oil field and one new gas field discovered during 1943. These new fields were the result of exploratory drilling throughout the district along the Wilcox trend and the deeper Edwards lime trend, which was started during the previous year. The Wilcox trend yielded the new Loma iilta-Wilcox oil field and the San Caja gas-* tlistillate field, both in McMullen County. The Charlotte field, in Atascosa County, was discovered along the deeper Edwards lime trend. These three discoveries were of considerable importance and subsequent development should indicate the desirability of continued exploration along these trends. The other three discoveries, United oil field in Guadalupe County, Pederson gas field in Milam County and Van Cleve gas field in Zavalla County, were of minor importance. Charlotte Field, Atascosa County, was discovered by the Humble Oil and Refining Company&apos;s No. 3 Pruitt, completcd on Aug. 9, 1944, flowing 176 bbl. per day, 3/16-in. choke, 710 lb. tubing, 475 lb. casing pressures, 37.7º A.P.I. gravity, from the top of the Edwards lime from 6917 to 6923 ft. Two oil wells were completed during the year in this field. This discovery is 14 miles southwest of the same company&apos;s Imogene field, also producing from the Edwards lime but with considerable difference in reservoir characteristics. The discovery of this field is the result of surface geology and subsequent seismograph survey of the area. Loma Alta-Wilcox Field, McMullen County, was discovered by the Atlantic Refining Company&apos;s No. I Atkinson, completed on June I, 1944, flowing 102 bbl. per day, 9/64-in. choke, 1900 lb. tubing pressure, 37º A.P.I. gravity, from Wilcox sand from 6866 to 6869 ft. after being drilled to a total depth of 7185 ft. This discovery is the result of subsurface geology and an extensive seismograph survey of the entire area. Sun Caja Field, McMullen County, was discovered by Edwin M. Jones No. 2-C Ezzell, completed on June 2, 1944 as a dual completion in the Wilcox sands, flowing 1,740,000 cu. ft. gas with 53 bbl. distillate, 1/4-in. choke, 2035 lb. tubing pressure, 53.2º A.P.I. gravity, from sand 6416 to 6453 ft. and flowing 2,000,000 cu. ft. of gas with 127 bbl. distillate, 1/4-in. choke, 2500 lb. tubing pressure, 50º A.P.I. gravity, from sand 6889 to 6916 ft., after being drilled to a total depth of 7264 ft. INTRODUCTION Underground fires continue to be one of the most serious hazards to life and property in the mining industry. Although underground mines are analogous to high-rise buildings where persons are isolated from immediate escape or rescue, application of technology to locate and control fire hazards while still in their controllable state is slow to be implemented in underground mines. Even in large surface structures such as hotels, often only fire protection systems which meet minimal laws are implemented due to the high cost of adding extensive extinguishing systems, isolation barriers, alternate ventilation, escape routes and alarm systems. Incomplete and ineffective protection occasionally is evidenced where costs would not seem to be a factor, such as the $211 million MGM Grand Hotel fire November 21, 19801. Paramount in increasing fire safety and decreasing the threat of serious fire is early warning followed by proper decision analysis to perform the correct action. However, very complex fire situations can be produced in structures such as high-rise buildings and underground mines simply because of the distances between the numerous fire-potential locations and fire safe areas. Other complexities arise when normal activities occur that emit products of combustion signaling a fire condition to a sensitive fire/smoke sensor. For example, the operation of diesel equipment or the performance of regular blasting can produce combustion products that reach the sensitive alarm points of many sensors2. Smoke detectors for surface installations provide fire warning when occupants are at a distant location or when sleeping, thus greatly reducing injuries and property damage. However, when installed in the harsh environments of underground mines, fire and smoke detection equipment soon becomes inoperative, unreliable, or requires excessive maintenance. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has performed many studies and tests to improve fire and smoke protection for underground mine workers3. This paper describes several USBM safety programs which included in-mine testing with mine fire and smoke sensors, telemetry and instrumentation to develop recommendations for improving mine fire safety. It is hoped that the technology developed during these programs can be added to other programs to provide the mining industry with the necessary fire safety facts. By recognizing fire potentials and being provided with cost-effective, proven components that will perform reliably under the poor environmental conditions of mining, mine operators can provide protection for their working life and property equal to that which they provide for themselves and their families at home. The basis of this report is two USBM programs for fire protection in metal and nonmetal mines4,5 and one coal program6. The data was collected beginning in May 1974 and continuing through the present with underground tests of a South African fire system installed at Magma Mine in Superior, Arizona, and a computer-assisted, experimental system at Peabody Coal Mine in Pawnee, Illinois. The conduct of each program was as follows: • Define the problem and its magnitude in the industry • Develop concepts to solve or diminish the problem • Review available hardware or systems approaches to fit the concepts • Install and demonstrate the performance of a prototype system through fire tests in an operating mine. MINE FIRE FACTS Whether in coal or metal and nonmetal mines, the potential severity of fire hazard is directly related to location. As shown in Figure 1, fire in intake air at zones A, B, C or D can cause contamined air to route throughout the mine quickly if not detected, isolated or rerouted. Causes and location of former metal and nonmetal fires are represented in Table 1; the cause and location of fatalities and injuries is shown in Table 2. Coal-related fires and their impact on deaths and injuries are graphed in Figure 2; their locations are described in Table 37. Significantly the table shows that the hazard to personnel was three times greater for fires occurring in shaft or slope areas, and the percentage of deaths and injuries was four times that of other areas. Number of Persons Affected A 129-mine sample indicated that from 8 to 479 employees per shift work in underground metal and nonmetal mines, and that deeper mines have larger populations, as shown in Figure 3. Coal mining relates similar employment, and a 16-state sample of 670 mines employing at least 25 persons shows the distribution in Figure 4. Drift mines accounted for 58 percent of the sample but employ only 45 percent of the underground workers.

The need for a low-strength cementing composition for use in well cementing is reviewed and results are presented of laboratory and experimental field tests of a modified cement having a controlled ultimate tensile strength of approximately 200 psi. The modified cementing composition may he prepared from either high early strength or normal portland cements by the addition of bentonite clay and a suitable agent for dispersing and controlling the set of the slurry. Substitution of the modified cement for conventional slow-set cements may give better completion results in many wells because the modified cementing composition has lower set strength, lower slurry density, and greater slurry stability than conventional cement slurrieh. The lower ultimate strength allows greater penetration with less shattering of the set cement when perforating casing and cement. The lower elurry density allows the placement of longer columns of cement slurry, and the greater slurry stability reduces the possibility of having an uncemented section caused by the settling of cement particles before the cement set.. During the early use of portland cement in well cementing. emphasis was placed upon securing cements with higher strengths. In 1931, Barkis&apos; reported that, "Normal oil well cements have been improved to develop greater strengths and uniformity of product, which has aided in producing successful jobs in cementing the deeper strings." As long as most wells were completed by the open-hole method. the use of cements having high strengths seemed desirable, and there was no objection raised against high-strength cementing compositions. For a number of years. how-ever, the industry has been completing a large numher of wells by setting and cementing casing through productive horizons and then obtaining production by gun-perforating the section of casing opposite the desired interval. Although this method has been generally successful, difficulties have been experienced in some cases in completing or recompleting wells because of apparent lack of adequate penetration by the bullets through the casing and surrounding sheath of cement and into producing formation. In addition to the penetration trouble: there have been indications that fracturing and shattering of the set cement by perforating might he a contributing factor in causing the failure of some jobs to exclude water or gas from oil producing zones. The possibility that cements having high set strengths were contributing to til difficully ill obtaining satihfartory perforating results has re. ceived attention during recent years. Gun perforating tests conducted in 1944 showed that the depth of bullet penetration into set cement varied with the hardness of the cement, the greater the strength of the cement the less being the penetration. In 1946, Farris2 pointed out that high strength cements were not needed in well cementing, and in 1947, data published by Oliphant and Farris3 showed that set cement was perforated without shattering at approximately 150 psi tensile strength. whereas at approximately 300 psi tensile strength severe cracking and shattering occurred. Oliphant and Farris suggested that wells be perforated at the proper time interval after placement of the cement so that the set cement would have the desired strength. Several difficulties may he encountered in trying to perforate a cement job at the correct time to catch the tensile strength near 150 psi. The rate of strength development of different cements varies considerably. This fact is illustrated by results of tensile strength measurements presented in Fig. 1. These data show that at 175°F the tensile strengths of three conventional slow-set cements varied from 75 to 235 psi at the end of 12 hours. After 24 hours, the tensile strengths varied from 200 to 455 psi. The rate of strength development is affected. also. by the temperature of the forniation, and this adds to the uncertainty of perforating at the rorrect time, since accurate well cementing temperatures may not he known in many cases. The method of drilling deep wells into the earth for the recovery of oil and gas is beset with many hazards. This is especially true in the Ventura Avenue field, which has the distinction of being the hardest field in California in which to complete a deep well. The hard, shifting and squeezing formations must be penetrated to great depths in the face of tremendous gas pressures. This field presents problems that keep the operators abreast with all of the latest developments in oil-field tools and machinery and in oil-well drilling practices. Equipment must be strong, and adapted to deep-well drilling and the handling of long heavy strings of casing. High-pressure sands require the utrnost care and attention of the operators and no chances can be taken, since a serious blowout may cause the loss of a well that has cost months of labor and expense. Equipment must meet these requirements or be discarded. Although the deepest wells in the world are not in this field, nor hav:. the longest strings of casing been set, nevertheless, the consistency with which deep wells are drilled and long strings of casing are set places the Ventura Avenue field foremost, in this respect, among the oil fields of the world. The V&apos;entura Avenue field dors claim the deepest commercial oil-producing well in the world, in the Shell Co. of California&apos;s "Edison" No. 18. This well was drilled 7015 ft. and came in flowing 3280 bhl. of oil per day. This field also claims the deepest average depth of producing wells in that its Ill producing wells average 5676 ft. in depth. Of these 111 producing wells, 50 arc 6000 ft. or deeper, and 16 are 6500 ft. or deeper. Also, of the 111 producing wells 100 arc flowing, and 11 arc pumping wells. This paper is intended to set forth the methods used in the drilling of deep wells with rotary tools and the handling of long heavy strings of casing in the Ventura Avenue field.

Since the end of World War 11 interest has been increasing in the use of shaped charges in the mining industry and in other industries using explosives for blasting purposes. Shaped charges employ the principle known as the "Munroe effect," which was discovered by Charles E. Munroe more than 50 years ago (in 1888). Details of their design have been explained elsewhere.1,2,3 Fig I shows the essential features of design of two types of shaped charges (with conical and hemispherical cavities) and a schematic sketch of their action upon detonation. The following discussion deals with the behavior of the metal in the cavity liners when they are subjected to intense Pressures exerted when the explosive charge is detonated. Among the conclusions reached in research on shaped explosive charges, the following have been established conceming cavity liners:1&apos;2 I. The optimum wall thickness of a conical cavity liner is dependent upon the apex angle of the cone as well as On the base diameter of the charge. Acute apex angles require thinner walls for optimum perfonnance and more obtuse angles require thicker walls for the same base diameter. &apos;. Cones were more effective in forming a penetrating jet when the walls were tapered; that is, the thickness of the wall of the cone increased from the apex down. 3. The physical and mechanical properties of metals have a marked effect upon their performance as cavity-liner material. Boiling point, ductility, malleability, ten-sile strength, and hardness are among the properties that influence the effectiveness of a metal used as a cavity liner. Lead, for example, makes a wide, flat crater in steel plates. Aluminum makes a deeper crater than lead, and an aluminum alloy having a high tensile strength makes a deeper hole, but slightly smaller in diameter. Cast iron makes a deep, narrow hole. These findings, together with the following analysis under Metallographic Survey of slug, offer solutions to many of the problems involved in solving the mechanism of the formation of Munroe jets. It has been fairly well established that cavity liners collapse in a manner similar to that indicated in Fig 2, Conical liners are known to collapse upon themselves while hemispherical liners are believed to turn inside out in the process of jet formation. The first has been definitely proved by recovery of collapsed portions of cones, while liners from partly detonated charges show that hemispheres may turn inside out. Fig 3 shows a sketch of a recovered slug from a 6-in. shaped charge using a 45" cone made of cast iron. (This size of charge drilled holes up to 3 ft in depth in solid granodiorite.)
