Josephtown Smelter employs the St. Joe-developed electrothermic process for producing zinc metal and zinc oxide. The process uses resistance-type electric furnaces. Flow of current through the sintered ore and coke charge develops the energy required for smelting at the reaction sites. To produce zinc metal, the furnace off-Gases bubble through a large "U"-tube filled with molten zinc which condenses the zinc to liquid; the metal is then mechanically cast into slabs. To produce zinc oxide, the furnace vapors burn in air and the resultant powders are collected. The smelter comprises three distinct circuits. One circuit produces American Process zinc oxide and high grade metal; another circuit produces tailor-made alloys of controlled lead and cadmium content; the third circuit produces prime western zinc metal and feedstock which is refined into special High grade metal and French Process zinc oxide. The roasting circuit utilizes multiple-hearth furnaces for deleading the zinc concentrates; fluid bed and suspension roasters are employed for desulfurization. Sintering produces a hard, porous furnace feed. The flexible smelting process is adaptable to consuming various kinds of secondary material. Extensive residue treatment accomplishes high overall zinc recovery. Smelter by-products include sulfuric acid, cadmium, and mercury.

High current-low voltage EB-gun evaporation in an oil-free ultra-high vacuum system was found to be necessary, though not sufficient, for stability (300°C, 106 v per on) of aluminium gate MOSFET's and MOS capacitors not stabilized by a phosphorous glaze. five characteristics of the equipment used: 1) Vacuum purification of the aluminum charge, 2) Ionization of the evaporant by the electron beam, 3) X-ray formation, 4) Residual gases during evaporation, and 5) Metal film structure were studied as Possibly significant in MOS fabrication. EVAPORATION of contact metals common to the semiconductor industry historically has been accomplished with oil diffusion pump systems and various resistance heated evaporant sources as dictated by the type of metal evaporated. To meet a need for greater reliability of semiconductor devices, other metallization methods were developed. A good example would be application of the moly-gold contact system to integrated circuits with deposition by RF or triode sputtering.' More recently, fabrication of stable metal-oxide-silicon devices and circuits has put new demands on metallization. The purity of the thin metal films composing MOS structures is critical, particularly at the metal-oxide interface, and ultra-high vacuum metallization using sputter-ion pumping and electron beam gun (EB-gun) evaporation are well suited for the task. At this laboratory aluminum has been the most common contact-gate metal for both MOS capacitors and MOSFET's. In the earliest work with MOS capacitors, aluminum was evaporated from wetted tungsten filaments using both diffusion pump and ion pump vacuum systems. In spite of clean oxide techniques these capacitors were unstable under bias-tempera-ture stressing. Only after a switch to EB evaporation of aluminum were stable capacitors produced. Using the same techniques it was possible to make MOSFET's with equivalent stability. Stability data for a discrete MOSFET is shown in Fig. 1. This is a "clean" oxide gate (no phosphorus stabilization or no etch back of a thicker gate) having a thickness of lOOO? thermally grown on the (111) plane. Gate length after diffusion was 0.24 mils, and the devices were hermetically sealed. Stressing conditions were 300°C and 106 v per cm applied alternately as a positive and negative field for 10 min, 50 min, and 4 hr for a total stress time of 10 hr. An initial shift in turn-on voltage of 0.1 v was detected for 10 min of positive bias. All evidence at this laboratory indicated that while EB-gun evaporation of ultra-high purity aluminum was not sufficient for 300°C stability, it did seem to be necessary. There may well then be something inherent in the EB-gun deposition used which enhanced stability, and probably no single factor existed but rather a series of factors. It is the purpose of this paper to report on some of the investigations carried out to learn more about EB-gun evaporation in ultra-high vacuum systems. EXPERIMENTAL DESCRIPTION The EB-gun was self accelerated, had a maximum power rating of 10 kw, and used a water-cooled copper crucible able to hold a 20-g aluminum charge. The electron beam was bent 180 deg and focused by an electromagnet which also provided movement of the beam across the crucible. Normal power conditions in this work were 9 kv and 300 to 600 mamp. The gun can be described as high-cur rent/low-voltage and was quite different in its mechanism of operation from EB-guns with much higher acceleration potentials. An oil-free vacuum system capable of 5 x 10- l0torr, a quartz crystal rate and thickness monitor and a quadruple mass spectrometer completed the evaporation system, Fig. 2. A typical evaporation cycle consisted of a 3 to 4 hr pumpdown to the upper l0-9 range and evaporation at l0? per sec with the pressure in the bell jar not rising above 1 x 10"7 torr. Thickness control was 5 pct or less and could be automatically monitored and controlled. Five phenomena associated with the EB evaporation and considered as possible contributors to Ma performance included a purification effect, ionization of evaporating aluminum, X-rays, constitution of vacuum ambient during evaporation, and film structure dependence upon evaporation rate. These phenomena are now discussed. Vacuum Purification. The design of the EB-gun permitted purification of the aluminum charge by vacuum outgassing. Particular features included an efficiently water-cooled copper hearth with a capacity of over 20 g of aluminum and the capability for sweeping the beam across the charge. Such capacity meant that aluminum had to be added only after about every fifth evaporation. A new charge was not required each evaporation as is necessary with filament evaporation. An oxide "scum" which appeared on the charge could be completely cleared from the top hemisphere of the charge by sweeping with the beam prior to opening the shutter. An indication of the purifying effect was obtained by a series of analytical measurements on incoming aluminum, after melting but with little vacuum out-gassing, after 30 min outgassing, and the evaporated film itself. The four nomograms presented in this article were designed to simplify and make more rapid the calculations connected with the compression and transmission of air. The formulae involved are rather complicated, but the graphic solutions are simple; their use requires an ability to follow explicit directions and to interpolate values on a logarithmic sca1e. † For the sake of convenience, the nomograms will be divided into two classes, and the purpose and accuracy of each will be discussed. Power foR CompREssion It is frequently desirable to determine the horsepower necessary to compress a given amount of free air from atmospheric pressure to a certain final pressure. The nomograms in Fig. 1 and 2 present a rapid method of calculating the horsepower required to compress 1 cu. ft. of free air per minute by single or two-stage compression. The general formula for the horsepower required to compress air adiabatically is: S X 144 PVn [(P')n-1/sn -1 (1) where: P = absolute atmospheric pressure at compressor, in pounds per square inch. P' = final absolute pressure of compressed air, -in pounds per square inch. V = volume of free air compressed per minute, in cubic feet. S = number of stages. n = exponent of the compression curve.

IN 1945-1946, the author measured temper brittle-ness in ingots of varying composition prepared by remelting SAE 3135 bar stock under vacuum. Since other investigators1-" have been referring to this hitherto unpublished work, belated publication seems worthwhile. Steel in 7 lb batches&apos; was induction melted with nickel additions in a magnesia crucible under a pressure of 10 microns of Hg or less and cast into a 2 in. diam chill mold. The compositions of ingots A, B, and C prepared in this way are shown in Table I; the vacuum melting lowered carbon, manganese, sulphur, and nitrogen content. Ingot B was homogenized 24 hr at 1095°C; ingots A and C were not homogenized. Blanks, M in. square, were cut from each ingot, austenitized 1 hr at 870°C, water quenched, tempered 1 hr at 595"C, and water quenched. Half the blanks from each ingot were given an embrittling treatment of 50 hr at 455°C and water quenched. A few specimens, embrittled and unembrittled, were finally heated 1 hr at 580°C and water quenched. Charpy specimens machined from the blanks were V-notched on the side closest to ingot mid-radius and paired as to radial position in the ingot, one of each pair having received the embrittling treatment and the other not. Specimens were broken in a standard impact machine at various temperatures, the same temperature, in general, being used for both bars of a pair. Fig. 1 shows the results. It is evident that temper brittleness, as measured by the increase in temperature of transition from brittle to tough failure introduced by the 455°C treatment, was decreased but not eliminated by reducing carbon to 0.006 pct, manganese to < 0.004 pct, and nitrogen to 0.001 pct. In another study," temper brittleness was apparently eliminated by -reducing carbon to 0.003 pct, with 0.80 pct Mn and 0.0015 pct N (ingot D)." • Analyses given for carbon below 0.02 pct were made by Jensen method; for nitrogen, by Kjehldahl method. Values quoted else-where&apos;-&apos;." for carbon content of ingot C and for nitrogen content of ingot D were obtained by conventional combustlon and by vacuum fusion methods, respectively, and are considered much less accurate. The 580°C final treatment removed previous em-brittlement (ingot B particularly), indicating that this was "reversible embrittlement."" Metallographic examination of ingot C with 1 pct nital etch revealed only ferrite; ingot A had carbide spheroids uniformly distributed in a ferrite matrix. With ethereal picric acid plus zephiran chloride etchant.&apos; no differences between embrittled and un- embrittled specimens of ingots A, B, or C were noted. Fracture of C and D below the transition temperature was predominantly transcrystalline, with traces of intercrystalline, in both embrittled and unembrittled conditions. The corresponding fracture of unembrittled B was mixed transcrystalline and intercrystalline; of embrittled B, predominantly intercrystalline with some transcrystalline areas. . . . THE subject of classification is so broad that this discussion is confined to what the author believes is of prime importance in connection with proper grinding and classification. The years passed have witnessed many noteworthy changes in fine grinding and classification, which have been accompanied by a readjustment of ore-dressing flowsheets for the preparation of better ground and/or sized products at an expenditure of less power, steel and maintenance than formerly. Nowhere in the industry is more being done in the way of experimental work to lower costs than in grinding circuits, because, at best, grinding costs are high. Recent years have indicated that, on the average, finer grinding has a real application. Without careful preparation of the process feed, no operation can be highly efficient or successful. In an earlier paper, the findings of an extensive survey at representative concentrators were presented1. Also, in the year of 1935, a technical discussion was given by Dr. J. V. N. Dorr (Some Notes on Classification Trends in America) before the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa In both papers mentioned, much has been said regarding flowsheets, grinding and classification. The author is very familiar with these papers, having had considerable to do with the actual operation of the flowsheets, as well as large mills and classifiers in the work described. Some data from the second paper have been included in the following discussion. Circulating Load In this particular paper it seems advisable to deal with the classification phases of the work that to a major extent govern the success of any closed-circuit grinding unit. From the observation of platinum wire marker movement in the oxidation of columbium at high lemperatures and low oxygen pressures, predonzinant cation diffusion in CbO, has been demonstrated. The Cu,0 molecule was used as an oxidizing species to study the nature of the porous scale and the location of the reduction site in the oxidation of colum-bium. The Cb205 scale contains microporosity and forms by alternate ionic diffusional growth and fracture. The oxidation of columbium at high temperatures and very low po, results in a relatively compact and protective Cb205 layer. THE observation of marker movements during oxidation is one means for the identification of the mobile ionic species in an oxide lattice. Previous marker experiments in the oxidation of columbium have all resulted in the markers being found on the outside surface of the Cbz05 scale. The Cr203 powder markers of Klopp et a1.,&apos; the gold film marker of Kofstad and ~jijllesdal,&apos; and the platinum wire marker of Cathcart et a1 .3 were found at the oxide/gas interface for oxidation temperatures ranging from 450" to 120O0C. However, in all experiments relatively high oxygen pressures were used. As discussed by Mrowec, even the interpretation of marker experiments in simple scales containing only one compound is not without ambiguities. In brief, it can be said that a marker may be found almost anywhere in the scale layer if the metal oxidizes by cation diffusion through the scale; the position of the marker depends upon morphological happenings in the scale. When considering marker movement in a polyphase scale one must proceed with extreme caution. For example, in the past (and present) work markers have never been found at the columbium-scale interface, and one might infer that the oxygen ion is mobile in CbO and CbO,. However, only trace quantities of CbO and CbOz have been present on any of the specimens, so no firm statement is justified on this basis. Despite previous experimental work, considerable doubt still exists concerning the role of the oxides CbO and CbOz in the oxidation of columbium. The identification of the mobile ionic species in CbO and CbOz from the observation of platinum wire markers was one goal of the present investigation . The linear kinetics of columbium oxidation at high temperatures (T - 1000°C) suggests that the Cbz05 scales which form on columbium are porous. From mercury absorption measurements on a Cbz05 scale formed at 500"C, Aylmore et al.&apos; reported a minimum volume fraction of connected voids equal to 0.15. While these scales often appear to be quite porous when viewed in metallographic cross section, they are so brittle that metallographic preparation is likely to exaggerate any porosity originally present. In this investigation, porosity developed during the oxidation of pure columbium and present at the high temperature was detected by oxidizing specimens in sealed evacuated capsules containing large compacts of mixed copper and CuzO powders. wooda has demonstrated that the CuzO, or (CuzO),, molecule is volatile and that oxygen is transferred by the CuzO molecule from a Cu/CuzO mixture to materials having a greater affinity for oxygen. For each molecule of CuzO that is reduced at a sink for oxygen, two atoms of copper are deposited. Quantitatively, essentially all of the oxidation carried out by a Cu-Cu20 compact results from a displacement reaction involving the CuzO molecule. When a metal which oxidizes to form a porous scale is exposed to the CuzO vapor, the CUZO molecules are reduced in the pores leaving a deposit of metallic copper to mark the site of the reduction. This technique has the rather unique advantage that any copper-coated pores found in the scale are unambiguously related to the reduction site in the growth of the scale under consideration. Pores or cracks which form in a msition*- external to the reduction site or which occur as a result of cooling or handling of the specimen will not exhibit the copper deposit. THE 650-ton underground mill of The Empire Zinc Company of Colorado (a subsidiary of The New Jersey Zinc Co.) serves the Eagle mine at Gilman in the Battle Mountain mining district of Colorado. The topography is rough, the mine and mill being under Battle Mountain and the alit entrance in the north wall of the canyon of the Eagle River, which is here a steel) gorge. The town of Gilman stands on a shoulder of the mountain at altitude 8975 ft., above sea level, along the Pike&apos;s Peak ocean to ocean highway and contains the company office and the usual facilities of a modern mining town. The railway contact is at Belden, altitude 8370 ft., at the bottom of the gorge directly below Gilman, where the westbound track of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad is cut along the north bank and the eastbound track along the south bank of the river. A general description of the mine, mill and service facilities, with an account of the geology, character of the ore and methods of mining and milling having previously been published in a series of articles1, this paper will discuss with as little repetition as practicable the reasons for building the mill underground rather than as a conventional structure, the methods of construction employed and the experiences gained in what is apparently the pioneer plant of this type and extent.

The search for ore is characterized by a great variety of uncertainties, each of which can be resolved by obtaining information at a cost. Three exploration stages may be distinguished in which information can be obtained, based on inherently different cost structure: 1) the reconnaissance or scanning stage, 2) the examination or screening stage and 3) the project stage. This exploration sequence would roughly coincide with replies to questions as to: where, how, why and how much. As complete information in each stage is too costly to acquire, we must assess the probability that adequate information will be furnished by a limited amount of effort and attempt to maximize the expected value of ore to be found for a given exploration expenditure. Several problems are discussed relative to the mathematical formulation and possible computer procedures for determining the optimum allocation of a total exploration effort. Based on the available literature possible solutions to this problem are indicated. When scanning through published literature on mineral exploration, it seems at first that there is little room for substantial and systematic improvements in the efficiency with which the problem of discovery of new ore deposits is presently being handled by large organizations active in exploration. It appears equally difficult to offer something relevantly new which could generate a break-through in exploration thinking and cause a marked improvement in the ratio of successful undertakings to the total exploration projects started. On the other hand, a number of experts in recent years have urged that the problems in prospecting be analyzed in a more skillful and sophisticated manner than in the past. Their thesis is based mainly on the premise that the cost of finding mineral deposits will increase with increasing technical difficulties. In present large-scale exploration ventures, especially in those regions where outcrops and immediately visible geologic evidence are scarce, older methods of prospecting are increasingly being replaced by more indirect and systematic geophysical and geochemical methods with more emphasis on correct statistical design of exploration patterns. It is perhaps the oil industry which has made the greatest strides in developing statistically, well justified patterns in its search for oil; possibly because oil seepages, as indicators of the presence of oil, left off at an earlier point in time than did outcrops as indicators of base metals. Among the pioneers in the field of statistics and operations research, as applied to mineral exploration, the excellent works of Allais, Slichter, Koop-man, Mickey, de Guhnin, Krumbein, Griffith, Sichel, Krige, de Wijs, and Matheron may be mentioned. It should, however, be pointed out that three subjects of basic importance to the allocation of exploration efforts have so far received only scant attention in published literature, even by the aforementioned authors. In the first place, a more precise definition of the object of the search, i.e., a minimum-size orebody, seems to be outstanding. Secondly, a decision model is not a widely-discussed subject. Thirdly, no concentrated attempt so far seems to have been made to establish probabilities of the occurrence of economic deposits on a regional scale and to arrive at a slightly more accurate knowledge of the probability laws governing the deposition of ore. It is not the purpose of this paper to create new order in the complexity of uncertainties in which our decision processes in exploration necessarily have to be conducted. Rather, we intend to highlight some of the outstanding, hitherto unmapped territory, where diligent compilation and a utilization of present and historic data may statistically improve our chances of success. We hope that the contribution of this paper will lie in bringing allocation problems into better focus and in increasing the mineral industry&apos;s realization of the magnitude of the factors involved. THE diffusion of metal atoms into the crystal lattice of another metal and the assumption of regular positions to form a homogeneous alloy are some of the most fundamental phenomena of structural metallurgy. The mechanism of this process has been the subject of a great deal of study from many viewpoints, but the picture is still far from complete. It is generally believed that if one metal is to diffuse into another, the first must have some solubility in the second1. This means that the solvent must be able to accommodate the stranger atoms, either on points of its own lattice or in the interstices between, without losing its own crystal-lographic identity. It is also a general observation that cold-working is a distinct aid in the diffusion process, causing it to take place with greater rapidity at the same temperature or with the same speed at a lower temperature. There is considerable doubt, however, as to the real significance of the deformation in its effect on the diffusion mechanism. Several factors associated with the cold-working may be responsible for the increased diffusion rate. The plastic deformation causes a distor-tion of the solvent lattice, which may be an aid in the assimulation of atoms of another kind. There are many references2 in the literature that suggest that some distortion or "loosening" of the lattice is necessary for atomic migration and that diffusion cannot take place in the undis-

The term solution loss is discussed and defined. Examples are given showing that solution loss may either have a favorable or unfavorable effect on blast furnace performance. A theory is advanced explaining the contradictions encountered during earlier studies of the problem. MANY papers have been written and numerous theories advanced concerning the chemical reactions in the iron blast furnace. Richards, discussing the utilization of fuel in the blast furnace, said: "All the carbon burnt in the furnace should be first oxidized at the tuyeres to CO and all the reduction of oxides above the tuyeres should be caused by CO, which thus becomes CO,. This dictum is not Gruner&apos;s own words, but expresses their sense, and from the point of view of the present discussion, it is the correct principle upon which to obtain the maximum generation of heat in the furnace from a given weight of fuel." Richards also said the cubic feet of wind per pound of coke does not express how efficiently a furnace is running, but it will be shown later where Howland paid much attention to this figure. Richards pointed out a shortcoming of Grun-er&apos;s discussion in that Richards claimed there is not enough CO generated in a good working blast furnace to possibly combine with the oxygen of the ore, so some of it must be reduced by solid carbon. Mathesius2 made two important contributions. First, he wrote the direct and indirect reduction equations showing the heats of formation in each case and stressed that the indirect reduction reaction produces heat while direct reduction absorbs heat. Secondly, he substantiated Richards&apos; conclusion that there may be a deficiency of CO gas and that some direct reduction is required, but he pointed out that "direct reduction in the hearth has often been confused with direct reduction in the stack, which more correctly should be termed &apos;premature combustion&apos;." Then he said that "as this carbon is consumed partly by economical (direct reduction in the hearth) and partly by wasteful reactions in ever varying proportions, it is evident that the relation of this total carbon gasified above the tuyeres to the fuel consumption of a furnace cannot possibly have a direct bearing on the economy of furnace operation. The premature combustion of carbon (CO2+C?2CO) must therefore in all cases be considered a detrimental reaction." Johnson3 discussed this whole problem. Through experience Johnson found that when departure from Gruner&apos;s ideal working is considerable, the fuel economy is poor, and when the quantity of blast goes up, the fuel economy goes up in the same proportion. Johnson said that the wind per pound of coke is a measure of fuel economy, which will be shown to be wrong. Howland4 established the fact from operating data that there was no relationship between the coke consumption of a furnace and the percentage of coke burned at the tuyeres. But some of his calculations have led to questionable conclusions, such as "it is practically impossible to obtain low coke consumption unless we keep our wind low." Howland made an important contribution when, in his concluding paragraphs, he reached certain negative decisions as to why one coke works better than another. He said the reason one coke works better than another in a blast furnace is not because: 1—there is any difference in the percentage gasified at the tuyeres, or 2—there is any difference of wind required per pound of coke. Korevaar5 propounded a new theory on combustion which disagrees with Gruner because "as far as we can see, this is sufficient proof for the invalidity of Gruner&apos;s ideal, for if it was valid, the Low coke consumption should always be accompanied by a higher percentage of carbon burned at the tuyeres. This not being the case, we must deliberately give up our belief in Gruner&apos;s ideal." The part in italics will be proved to be wrong. Martin" contended that there was not enough reducing capacity in the blast furnace unless solution loss occurs. He came to a series of conclusions, such as: 1—The greatest efficiency of the blast furnace may not be attained when the reduction is performed entirely by carbon monoxide as demanded by Gruner&apos;s definition of the ideally perfect working of the blast furnace. 2—The so-called solution loss reactions, which should more properly be termed direct reduction reactions, promote furnace efficiency. 3—In modern blast furnace practice, the carbon consumption of the process is determined primarily by the carbon needed for reduction purposes, any thermal deficiency created by the reduction process being balanced in practice by the use of blast heat. From a practical standpoint further discussion of the theory of chemical reactions is of little moment. There is however one phase of the general theory of chemical reactions which is very important and that is the combustion of coke in the blast furnace. Injection of gas to increase oil recovery has been considered for almost all important discoveries during the past ten or fifteen years. However, the number of gas injection projects having sufficient history and data is too limited to permit valid generalities of effectiveness of gas injection. Management and engineers are faced with a difficult problem of selecting those reservoirs which are susceptible to profitable application of gas injection. Injection of gas to maintain high pressure favors some factors affecting reservoir performance such as viscosity, surface tension, and formation volume factor of oil by keeping gas in solution and favors some operating features such as extending flowing life of wells and storing part of the produced gas for future use or sales. Injection of gas at low pressure involves lower compression ratio, or at least a single gas-gathering system, larger displacement volume in the reservoir per unit of gas handled, and permits effective utilization of the naturally existing energy and agent for oil displacement that is gas dissolved in oil. Each program is thus a compromise to meet optimum economic conditions while striving to attain maximum recovery of this important nautral resource. The statement has often been made that pressure maintenance would greatly increase oil recovery by permitting abandonment of formation oil inflated with gas in solution rather than abandonment of the same liquid volume of tank oil, if the same terminal oil saturation could be attained. Simple calculations indicate increases in oil recov- ery as high as one hundred per cent on this basis for high formation volume factor oil encountered in current deep drilling. However, the number of gas injection projects having sufficient history and data is too limited to permit valid generalities of effectiveness of gas injection. Management and engineers are faced with a difficult problem of selecting those reservoirs which are susceptible to profitable application of gas injection. Injection of gas to maintain high pressure favors some factors affecting reservoir performance such as viscosity, surface tension, and formation volume factor of oil by keeping gas in solution and favors some operating features such as extending flowing life of wells and storing part of the produced gas for future use or sales. Injection of gas at low pressure involves lower compression ratio, or at least a single gas-gathering system, larger displacement volume in the reservoir per unit of gas handled, and permits effective utilization of the naturally existing energy and agent for oil displacement that is gas dissolved in oil. Each program is thus a compromise to meet optimum economic conditions while striving to attain maximum recovery of this important nautral resource. The statement has often been made that pressure maintenance would greatly increase oil recovery by permitting abandonment of formation oil inflated with gas in solution rather than abandonment of the same liquid volume of tank oil, if the same terminal oil saturation could be attained. Simple calculations indicate increases in oil recov- ery as high as one hundred per cent on this basis for high formation volume factor oil encountered in current deep drilling. The vapor pressure of palladium over a series of Rlz-Pd alloys has been measured by the torsion-effusion method. The thermodynamic properties of the alloy system at 1575=K have been calculated from the vapor pressure data. The activities and the free energies of formation exhibit large positive deviations from ideal behavior. The enthalpies of formation are endother-mic. The entropies of formation are positive and larger than the ideal entropy of mixing. All of the thermodynamic properties suggest that a strong tendency toward phase separation exists in the solid solutions. The possible origin of the phase instability and the various factors that influence the thermodynamic properties are discussed. RECENT studies of the thermodynamic properties of alloys of palladium with nontransition elements have indicated that a significant contribution to the enthalpy of formation is related to the redistribution of the conduction electrons upon alloy formation.&apos;-&apos; The present work was undertaken to ascertain the importance of this contribution in Pd/transition-metal alloys. The Rh-Pd system was chosen for this investigation for several reasons: 1) The thermodynamics of the system were unknown. 2) Rhodium and palladium are completely soluble at high temperatures; below 1118OK the solid solution becomes immiscible.&apos;, 3) The difference in magnitude between the vapor pressures of rhodium and palladium permitted the use of an existing effusion apparatus. 4) Additional information was known about the alloy system that would facilitate the interpretation of the thermodynamic results. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thermodynamic properties of the Rh-Pd alloy system were calculated from the vapor pressure of palladium over solid palladium and over several solid Rh-Pd alloys. The vapor pressure was measured by means of the torsion-effusion apparatus that has been described previously. In this method, an effusion cell is suspended from a tungsten filament inside a high-temperature furnace. Two orifices are located eccentrically such that the effusion of the vapor creates a rotational torque in the filament. The angle of rotation is directly related to the total vapor pressure within the cell. As the vapor pressures of rhodium and palladium are approximately five orders of magnitude apart," the total vapor pressure was considered to be effectively equal to the equilibrium vapor pressure of palladium. The effusion cells were made from high-purity alumina since auxiliary experiments indicated that essentially no reaction occurs between alumina and solid Rh-Pd alloys. Unfortunately, because the orifices were irregular, an accurate calculation of the Free- man-Searcy correction factors" could not be made. The constants were determined in an independent experiment where the vapor pressure of copper, as measured in the alumina cell, was compared with an accurate value of the vapor pressure, which had been determined previously.4 Depletion of palladium from the surfaces of the specimens was minimal as the deflection of the cell remained constant, for at least 15 minutes, at each of the experimental temperatures. Lattice parameter measurements of the postrun alloys also indicated that no changes in the composition of the surfaces had occurred. The alloys were prepared by arc melting the requisite amounts of the 99.99 pct pure elements. The four most palladium-rich alloys were remelted in a levita-tion furnace since complete melting of the components had not occurred in the arc furnace. All of the alloys were subsequently homogenized at elevated temperatures in sealed alumina thimbles. After heat treatment, the alloys were analyzed chemically and were in essential agreement with the nominal compositions. The thermal histories and nominal compositions of the alloys are given in Table I. Lattice parameters of the heat-treated alloys were computed, by means of the method described by Mueller et a1. ,I2 from X-ray diffraction powder patterns obtained with filtered copper radiation in a 114.6-mm-diam Straumanis-type Debye-Scherrer camera. The results, which are tabulated in Table I, exhibit a slightly greater negative deviation from Vegards&apos; law than the values reported by Raub et al.13 The diffraction lines were sharp and well-resolved and thus indicated that the alloys were homogenous. RESULTS The logarithms of the individual values of the vapor pressure of palladium were fit, by the least-squares method, as a linear function of the reciprocal of the absolute temperatures. The constants of the equations are given in Table I along with the temperature range over which the data was accumulated. The latent heat of vaporization at 298.15"K for pure palladium, calculated by the third-law method,14 showed no systematic temperature dependence. The average value of 88,920 * 20 cal per g-atom agrees favorably with the average of the results obtained in the most reliable previous investigations.15"19 The activities of palladium were computed from the vapor pressure data at 1525&apos;, 1575", and 1625OK. Consistent with the mass spectrometric study of the atomicity of palladium vapor,lg the vapor was assumed to be monoatomic. The activities of rhodium were determined by integrating the Gibbs-Duhem equation with the aid of the a function.20 In the calculations, the activities of the pure solid metals were assigned the value of unity. From the activities, the partial and integral free energies, entropies, and enthalpies of formation at 1575° K were computed; they are assembled in Table 11.

It has been found that sulfur can be more easily removed in racunm than in hydrogen and thai this process was hindered by the prescrzce of INCLUSIONS play an essential role in the development of cube-on-edge texture in Si-Fe. Their function consists in restraining the growth of primary grains up to about 900°C and in passing subsequently into solution at higher temperatures. This process is accompanied by the selective growth of secondary grains with (110)[001] orientation. The general effect of inclusions depends on such factors as the type of impurities, their amount. dispersion and stability, the conditions of diffusion in the space of lattice of metal, and the reactions at the metal/gas interface. In recent years, some of these factors were the subject of a special investigation. A positive influence of Mns, siN,&apos; and vN3 has been established. The quantity of impurities4 and their dispersion5 have been found to be of major importance. Attention was called to the vital importance of diffusion and the conditions under which the impurities are removed from metal., It has also been demonstrated that in Fe-Si alloys by the techniques of powder metallurgy a special opportunity exists to obtain the (110)[001] type texture. 6 The aim of this work was to conduct qualitative investigations on the influence of inclusion stability on the development of cube-on-edge texture in a metal containing approximately 3 pct Si. Experiments were carried out on cast alloys and on those manufactured by powder-metallurgy techniques. The results obtained from these experiments were utilized to explain the phenomena involved and to analyze the relationships between stable and unstable inclusions and the magnetic properties of alloys. EXPERIMENTS AND RESULTS The raw materials used in these experiments were the powder of carbonyl iron with the analysis (in pct) 0.044 C, 0.01 Mn, 0.005 Si, 0.009 P, 0.002 S, traces of Cu, 0.06 Ni, 0.0015 Al, 0.03 Cr, 0.02 Mo, 0.01 Ti, 0.002 Co, traces of Pb, and the powder of silicon containing 94.14 Si, 0.003 S, 0.048 C. The powders were ground and mechanically mixed in 100-g batches. and then pressed at 9 tons per sq cm into 74 by 24 by 8 mm blocks. Sintering was carried out at 1100°C for 12 hr in vacuum (2 x lo-&apos; Tr) or in hydrogen. In this instance the material was heated slowly and subjected to prolonged soaking at 350°, 650°, and 750 2C, respectively, to secure reduction of ferro-oxides. This was checked by making measurements of the dew point, which was found to change from -15" to -35°C after reduction. The compacts after sintering were hot-rolled to 2.4 mm, annealed at 800 C, and finally cold-reduced to 0.35 mm with intermediate annealing at 800°C at a gage of about 0.8 mm. Impurities were added in the powdered form and mixed with iron and silicon powders. Sulfur in the elemental state, electrolytic manganese, and pure aluminum oxide were employed. THE notched-bar impact test has proved worth while in certain applications as a test for control of the quality or the heat- . treatment of steel. In view of the serious thought that even so simple a test as the tensile test, has evoked during the past years, it is not surprising that the notched- bar impact test should have inspired much experimental work. The correlation of the great number of data has not been successful, although steady progress has been made toward a better understanding of this test. Progress has been made, especially, in the isolation of the effects of the many variables that control the results. The stress system imposed on a specimen with a notch is so complicated and un- predictable that no simple evaluation of the test has been possible. Because of this uncertainty, many engineers hesitate to use the notched-bar impact test, and this attitude may well continue until a better understanding of the effects of the variables in the test are available. Without doubt, any additional data that may be presented should be accompanied by as complete a description of the details of test as possible, so that it may be added to the general fund of information that is to serve as the basis for the theory of the notched-bar impact test. The many factors that may control the test results have been pointed out repeatedly. The importance of the effect of the type and dimensions of the specimen has been recognized. Most of the work reported by American investigators has been limited to small- size (Charpy) specimens tested as a simple beam; two types of notches (Fig. I) have been commonly used. Considerable data have also been presented by many investigators using a small specimen tested as a cantilever beam; this commonly being called the Izod test. Here, however, a shear component of stress makes the stress system even mare complex than that present in the simple beam type of test, hence a critical analysis is difficult. Much work has also been reported by investigators using the tension type of specimen. A second variable that must be con- trolled is the testing temperature. An indication that the tests were performed at room temperature is not sufficient, since in many steels a variation of a few degrees in the actual testing temperature may be sufficient to give an entirely different range of results. Other factors. such as the com- position and condition of the material being tested and the speed of test, should also be considered. Oil bearing rocks, usually found at depths of 2,000 to 10,000 it, are elastically deformed by overburden pressure. Although the change in porosity with pressure in a number of example rock.: has been shown to be small, it was thought that overburden pressure might have a significant effect on permeability. This note presents results of an investigation to determine the magnitude of the change in permeabilty with pressure. In routine core analysis permeabilities are measured on rock samples which are not under overburden pressure. If permeablity measured in this way differs from permeabilities measured under overburden pressure, a systematic error is introduced into well productivity calculations. The experiments described in this report were made to determine the magnitude of the change and thus to give an estimate of the error introduced into the calculations. The error introduced by the neglect of the change in permeability when overburden pressure is removed may account for part of the difference between well productivity calculated from core analysis and the actual well productivity. The results obtained in this investigation have only quali-tative significance because of the difficulty in reproducing in the laboratory the stress conditions on the rock buried in the earth. The assumption which is usually made is that the rocks in the earth are under a uniform pressure equal to the weight per unit area of the vertical overburden column from the rock in question to the surface of the earth less the pressure of the liquid in the pores of the rock. For an overburden consisting of sandstones and shales (of assumed average specific gravity of 2.3) and for a liquid pressure equal to the pressure in a salt water column (of specific gravity 1.0) reaching from the rock to the surface, the resulting net pressure on the rock is approximately 0.56 psi per ft of depth. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Clean, dry sandstone core plugs one in. in diameter and about three in. long were mounted in a copper foil jacket as shown in Fig. 3 or molded in a Lucite jacket as shown in Fig. 4. All cores except those labeled "2" in Fig. 1 and "8" in Fig. 2 were measured in the copper foil jacket. Cores "2" and "8" were measured in the Lucite jacket. The jacketed core was placed in a high pressure hydraulic bomb in which the liquid pressure outside the jacket could be raised to 15,000 psi. Flow lines from the core were brought out of the bomb through special fittings in the bomh head and connected to a laboratory type gas permeameter. Measurements were made with nitrogen gas; the maximum mean gas pressure in the core was 16.1 psia. RESULTS The specific permeability of sandstone decreases with in. crease in overburden pressure. Most of the decrease takes place over the range of zero to 3,000 psi overburden pressure. If the net pressure on the rock is assumed to be 0.56 psi per ft of depth as discussed above, 3,000 psi of overburden pressure is equivalent to about 5,000 ft of overburden. At 3,000 psi overburden pressure, the permeability of the eight sandstone core samples tested ranged from 59 to 89 per cent of the permeability without overburden pressure. Figs. 1 and 2 show the permeability reduction as a function of overburden pressure. The permeability of the eight cores without overburden pressure ranged from 4.35 md to 632 md; these permeabilities are listed in Figs. 1 and 2. REFERENCES 1. EXTENSIVE and diversified resources justify large populations and great industries. To carry on the business of commerce and meet the demands of large populations, the utilization of tunnels in some form for transportation purposes constitutes an important link in modern civilization. The driving of tunnels has been appropriated by the tunneling branch of the heavy-construction industry, and the progressive steps taken by modern tunnel builders were not even dreamed of 50 years ago. Great strides have been made toward more rapid progress in tunneling in the United States during the past 10 years. Tunneling consists of a definite cycle of operations developed from ideas that are crystallized and translated into action programs through various engineering phases that begin with the first preliminary survey and do not end until the job is completed. Once the line of the bore is established and a time set for the completion of the work, the face must advance according to estimates prepared before the work commences. This schedule must be followed in regular sequence from the moment the drills start against a new face of rock until they are ready again to drill the succeeding face, constituting a round.1 Mining is largely tunneling carried on under conditions often more inherently hazardous than actual tunnel construction, but for various reasons1 tunneling is more hazardous than mining in any branch of the mineral industry, On the other hand, obstacles are sometimes encountered in heavy-construction tunneling projects that when met in mining enterprises do not offer comparable tasks to avoid or overcome them. One of these is the existence of water under high pressures. In mining enterprises, various alternatives offer a solution in driving a tunnel, even to the extent of its discontinuance or the abandonment of the mine, but a "construction" tunnel usually must go forward because some important project depends largely if not entirely upon it. This paper describes an unusual method of driving a water-supply tunnel through rock carrying water under pressures and conditions that did not permit the use of ordinary tunneling methods. THE DELAWARE AQUEDUCT The new Delaware aqueduct is a Manhattan project of some magnitude; when completed, it will contain what probably will be, for some time to come, the longest tunnel in the world. Various features in its construction are currently described in the trade journals of the construction industry, and informative engineering details are given in the Delaware Water Supply News, published twice a month by the Board of Water Supply of the City of New York. Work was begun on this project on March 24, 1937. The tunnel will convey water from reservoirs at the headwaters of the Delaware River to the City of New York.

Design of a submarine pipeline system is governed by many factors, one of which is the effect of transverse horizontal currents on the pipeline structure itself Although this feature alone can be of utmost importance to the life span and stability of the underwater pipeline, it is usually the least recognized, with these hydro-dynamic forces being either completely overlooked or grossly underestimated. In an attempt to supply the methods and means for stabilization of sub-marine pipelines, much capital has been spent by pipeline companies. Design criteria incorporated by these organizations extend over a broad spectrum of engineering with bases varying from pure theory to cut and dry methods. A history of numerous failures has substantiated the postulate that many of these submarine pipelines have been underdesigned from the stability standpoint. By the same token, equally as many have been excessively overdesigned with resultant excess expenditures. An attempt has been made in this paper to establish the magnitudes of these hydrodynamic forces by measuring the lateral current-induced differential pressure distribution around the periphery of the submarine pipeline. INTRODUCTION The expenditure of money for research by corporations obviously requires beneficial results to justify the investment. One of the functions of the engineer is first to make the problem known and then to provide a means of solution at the least possible cost. The initial procedure is to investigate all pertinent published technical articles on the subject to determine if this problem has been previously solved. If resolution of this problem is not obtainable, the next course of action is to evaluate through experiments these forces and their magnitudes. On the specific subject of drag and lift, the accumulation of data is provided from three separate and distinct sources: from experience, from theoreticians and through experimental observations. The experience source has proved costly with money wasted either because of underdesign and failure or excessive expenditures for overdesign, and has not been sufficient to form a definite conclusion on these hydrodynamic forces. The pure theoretician is often not completely cognizant of the situation and his works bear little adaptation to the real problem. The experimentalist has his own problems with regard to obtaining results from small-scaled models and successfully adapting them to the larger prototypes. Each method has its own advocates who diligently adhere to their own separate routes as being the only means of resolving this problem. However, a review of the various methods of analysis leads one to the conclusion that if the advantages of all three are combined, a reasonable solution to this problem can be reached. Briefly then, the problem is to obtain the magnitudes of the forces on the submarine pipeline subjected to a lateral current by investigations of previous design considerations, by a study of existing theoretica1 data and by appropriate experimentation. This paper deals mainly with obtaining experimental data and the interweaving of theoretical and experience factors for resolution of these forces. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE These tests were performed in 1961 at Collins Construction Co.&apos;s main office near Port Lavaca, Tex. Test equipment consisted of a steel tank 3 ft high by 4 ft wide by 40 ft long, with several pumps circulating the water through the tank via suction lines from the downstream portion of the tank and discharging from the pumps directly into the upstream end of the tank. For reduction of turbulence, a wire section was constmcted in the upstream portion and straightening vanes in the form of pipes, screens, etc., were used to reduce the vortex and eddy action in the tank (Fig. 1). A venturi was built at the test specimen for obtaining velocity sufficient to simulate actual conditions. This full-scale test was initiated to eliminate the error introduced in modeling and obtain a truer picture of forces actually encountered. Six- and 10-in. specimens were prepared by

The temperature and strain rate dependence of the flow stress ratio and the stvain rate dependence qi the flow stress of annealed polycrystalline a zirconiur were determined over the temperature range 30 0" to 1000°K. Some evidence was found for strain aging and discontinuous flow in the temperature ranges 520" to 650°Kand650" to 760°K, respectively. The Cottvell-Stokes relationship was obtained when deformation occurred by twinning as well as slip. The flow stress ratio showed a strong dependence on temperature and strain rate above 800°K. The expevirnental evidence indicated that the rate-controllitzg mechanism for the deformation of a zirconium above 800°K was dislocation climb, and that the deformation was not thermally activated in the range 520" to 800°K. The stacking-fault energy of a zirconium was estimated to be about 250 ergs per sq cm. A knowledge of the temperature and strain rate dependence of the applied stress necessary to deform a crystalline solid is essential for understanding the thermally activated processes occurring during deformation.&apos; Several experimental techniques have been developed for studying these processes.273 One of the techniques is the deter mi nation of the strain rate dependence of the flow stress at constant temperature. In close-packed crystals, it has often been observed that the change in stress due to a change in the strain rate varies linearly with the flow stress, (~1,&apos; This relationship, known as the Cottre ll-Stokes law, is obeyed when deformation occurs by glide alone. However, when deformation occurs by twinning as well as glide, there is disagreement among different investigators on whether the Cottrell-Stokes law is observed. Whereas Thornton et ~1.~find departures from Cottrell-Stokes law when twinning occurs in copper, ~avis~ and sasinski? find that Cottrell-Stokes law is obeyed when deformation occurs by twinning as well as slip in cadmium and magnesium, respectively. One of the main objectives of this study is to determine whether the Cottrell-Stokes law is obeyed when deformation occurs by twinning as well as slip. The second technique that has been used extensively to study the thermally activated deformation of crystals is the determination of the ratio of the flow stresses, at identical dislocation structures and con-
