Usittg a sectioning technique with Agl10 as the tracer, the diffusion of silver in silver-excess (45.8 at. pct Mg), near-stoichiometric (49.8 at. pct Mg), and magnesium-excess (52.0 at. pct Mg) cylinders of CsCl-type AgMg was determined from 500" to 700°C. Diffusion coefficients conform to the expression D = Do exp (-q/RT) where the respective Do values are 1.53, 0.280, and 0.134 sq cm sec-I and the Q values are 41.3, 40.6, and 38.0 kcal g-atom-'. Lnttice-parameter and density measurements were performed on a more numerous assortment and wider range of compositions. Substitutional defects were found on both sides of stoichiometry. Activation energies for other rate processes in these alloys show related trends with changing composition, although silver may not be the rate-detemining species. KNOWLEDGE of diffusion coefficients is necessary for a quantitative understanding of the many rate processes (e.g., grain growth, precipitation, sintering, oxidation, or mechanical deformation) occurring in solids. Although these data are available for most metals and common alloys, they are quite limited for intermetallic compounds—a group of materials whose unique physical and mechanical properties are presently attracting great interest. From a fundamental viewpoint, diffusion in intermetallic compounds also offers several engaging aspects owing to: their ordering, the possibility of introducing large, stable concentrations of lattice defects, and the variety of bonding types and crystal structures which can be found. In the case of CsC1-type compounds, some previous work has been directed at examining the role of vacancy defects by changing their concentration compositionally. The diffusion of Co60 was measured in 0 NiAl1- and in P COA., Except for the results of Smoluchowski and Burgess, isothermal diffusion coefficients were found to pass through a minimum at the stoichiometric composi- they decreased sharply on what was reported by Bradley and co-wrkers' to be the vacancy-rich (aluminum excess) side of stoichiometry. This investigation of the diffusion of Agl110 in AgMg was undertaken both as an adjunct to a concurrent study of its deformation behavior and for the purpose of obtaining information on the influence of lattice defects and temperature on diffusion in another CsC1-type intermetallic compound. Bcc AgMg remains ordered up to and melts congruently at 820°C. Solubility limits at 300°C are about 41 at. pct Mg and 53 at. pct Mg. It is one of the Hume-Rothery electron compounds with a 3/2 electron-atom ratio. Previous investigations of its properties include hardress,' tenile,'-' electrical reistivity, and thermodyna-mic1',14 studies. Indications of a high bonding strength may be found in the large heat of mixing1' and in the 6-pct vol contraction on compound formaticp, as calculated using atomic radii of l.40 and l.55a for Ag and Mg. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared by the induction melting of selected fine silver (99.95) and low-iron magnesium (99.95) in magnesia crucibles under 1 atm of A. Supplied by the Handy and Harmon and Dow Chemical Cos., respectivelv. Melts were poured under argon into graphite molds providing 1 1/8-in.-diarn. by 4-in.-long ingots. These were homogenized in evacuated and argon-filled fused-silica capsules by heating for 16 hr at 750'. Three 1 in.-diam. by 3/4-in.-long cylinders were machined from the mid-portion of each ingot for diffusion measurements. Three alloys, analyzing 45.8, 49.8, and 52.0 at. pct Mg were taken as representing the extremes of interest, with 49.8 at. pct Mg being very close to the stoichiometric composition of 50.0 at. pct Mg.

A wire-feed mechanism has been employed to fabricute metal alloy film resistors to various sheet resistivities on oxidized silicon substrates. The effect of several thousand hours storage in air at elevated temperatures on the resistance and temperature coefficient of resistance is presented. Unprotected films of- sheet resistivity between 100 and 500 ohms per sq fabricated at 300°C substrate tenzperatures were unstable when stored at 150°Cfor extended periods. The higher sheet resistivity films exhibited the greatest instability; however, even the 100 ohms per sq films drijted excessively for device application. When stored at still higher temperatures, the normalized resistance increases to maximum, then decreases until a minimum value is obtained, then finally increases in resistance until open. The use of a protective overcoating of SiO has had considerable benejicial effects on the film stability, so that 250 ohms per sq films deposited on 300°C substrates are now stable after 1000 hr storage at 250°C and possess a temperature coefficient of resistance less than 200 ppm per C. The use of a low substrate temperature during depositon (100°C) enables the preparation oj resistors with very low tenperature coefficients of resistance (10 to 20 ppnl per 'C). However, these films are less stable than their higher substrate temperatuve counterparts. During extended storage, the resistance of the protected films always decreases with lower substrate films exhibiting larger normalized resistance decreases. This resistance decrease is accompanied by a linearly related increase in the temperature coefficient of resistance. The electrical behavior of these films may be explained by postulating That the structure of the films is in the transition region between thick continuous films and ultrathin island structure films so that the conductivity is the restlt of both electron scattering and tunneling-activated charge carrier creation between neighboring grains. The annealing behavior when thermally aged is the result of defect anneal, grain growth, and selective oxidation. TheRE is a considerable interest in thin metallic films for use as resistor elements in microelectronic circuits.1,2 These resistor films must be stable when exposed to elevated-temperature storage or operating ambient, possess low temperature coefficients of resistance (hereafter referred to as T.C.R.), and be of a high enough sheet resistivity to be useful. The resistivity and T.C.R. of a thin metallic film are determined by the structure and thickness of the film. Hence the stability of the film when exposed to stress would depend on the stability of the structure. The resistivity of a thin film is the result of the electrons' interaction with the lattice vibrations (electron-phonon scattering), scattering of electrons due to impurities, defects, and grain boundaries and specula reflection from the film surfaces.3' All of these effects serve to reduce the electron mean free path and result in a resistivity higher than the ideal bulk. In ultrathin films possessing essentially an island structure consisting of a planar array of aggregates separated by a few to a few tens of angstroms, conduction is dominated by a combination of tunneling and activated charge carrier reation. Thin films would be characterized by relatively low resistivity, positive T.C.R., and reasonable structure stability whereas ultrathin films possess unstable structures, negative T.C.R., and exhibit high resistivity. Feldman6 has investigated films intermediate between the two regions and postulates that the resistivity of a film in the transition region is composed of two linearly additive parts: that due to the resistance of the grains and that due to the gaps. The grain resistivity would represent the scattering of the conduction electrons by defects, surfaces, and phonon interaction while the gap term represents the tunneling contribution. For gold and platinum films, he found as the film structure becomes progressively less continuous, corresponding to thinner films, the absolute value of the T.C.R. becomes progressively smaller until negative values are observed with respective zero T.C.R.'s at about 35 and 150 ohm per sq, respectively. Recently the author7 investigated the behavior of a multicomponent alloy of nickel, chromium, and iron and found the T.C.R.'s of these films decrease with decreasing substrate temperature during deposition. The lower T.C.A. associated with lower substrate temperatures was attributed to an increased contribution to the total resistivity from the negatively temperature-dependent gap tunneling since it is well-known that thin films deposited on low-temperature substrates consist of a higher density of smaller grains than the same sheet resistivity films deposited on higher-temperature substrates. Under conditions of thermal anneal, the author found that, when various sheet resistivity films fabricated at 300°C substrate temperature are exposed to extended storage in air at 300°C, the thinner films increase in resistance until open, while the thicker films

The potential iron ores of Michigan can be classified from the stand-point of the predominant impurities into siliceous, sulphurous and phos-pllorous ores. Research on the flotation of each of these classes of ore was carried out in the following manner. The flotative properties of the valuable minerals of iron and of the worthless and deleterious ones were first determined under carefully controlled conditions. This information was then applied to synthetic mixtures of these minerals, which simulated the potential ores. Finally, data obtained during the two foregoing stages of the investigation were used in the flotation beneficiation of samples of the potential ores. Hematite is the most important mineral of iron in each of the above classes of iron ores. This paper deals with a study of that mineral in the very nearly pure state. There are two varieties of the mineral—specular hematite and massive hematite. The latter is the principal variety, but the former is an impor-tant' mineral of iron in some of the potential ores. Because of this condition, flotation research was performed with both varieties. This research consisted essentially of: (I) a survey of the literature on hematite flotation, (2) the preparation of pure massive hematite, (3) the preparation of pure specular hematite, (4) the development of a laboratory procedure and (5) flotation experimentation. For the purpose of this discussion, the results of previous work on the flotative properties of hematite can be summarized as follows: Specular hematite has been readily floated with terpineol and sodium oleate or heptylic acid1. Further, hematite has been likewise floated with a proprietary frother and oleic acid or other soluble oils2. Experience has indicated that hard bronzes are not suitable for bearing applications where high bearing loads and speeds are involved. It is the general practice to utilize softer materials for these purposes, such as copper, lead, silver, babbitt, lead-base alloys, and more recently aluminum-base alloys, preferably supported by a steel backing. It was the objective of the present investigation to study a new material produced by powder metallurgical methods susceptible to precipitation-hardening. Test MAteriaIs Preliminary tests were made with compacts containing copper, nickel and silicon in quantities sufficient to form 3 to 5 per cent nickel silicide. It mas found that this type of alloy was susceptible to the formation of a soft surface shell when sintered in tank hydrogen. The depth of the shell depended On the length of sintering time and sintering temperature, and varied in thickness from a few thousandths to as much as One eighth inch. This soft shell resulted from the preferential oxidation of silicon, thereby reducing the efficiency of age-hardening by the nickel silicide compound. The body of the sintered compacts below the soft shell could be precipitation-hardened to a hardness of 70 to 85 Rockwell B, by quenching from goo°C. and age-hardening at 450°C. A series of tests was made with various addition agents, in order to decrease the rate of preferential oxidation, and it was found that phosphorus was most beneficial in this respect. After considerable experimentation, the following nominal com-position was accepted as standard: 2.4 per cent nickel; 0.8 silicon; 0.3 phosphorus; balance copper. The physical propertties and certain bearing properties of this alloy are described in the present paper Preparation of Compacts Several methods of incorporating the hardening ingredient (nickel silicide) were studied. Compacts formed from copper, nickel and silicon powders were found to be inferior to those fabricated from prealloyed nickel silicide master alloys, because of the rapid oxidation of pure silicon during sintering. The use of a prealloyed nickel silicide hardener containing 25 per cent silicon and 75 per cent nickel could be further improved by preparing a master alloy, incorporating nickel, silicon, phosphorus and copper, having the following nominal composition~ 25 per cent nickel; 7 silicon; 3 phosphorus 64 copper. This alloy is brittle in the cast condition and can be readily powdered. Sintering Procedure The blended powders were pressed at '5 to 40 tons per sq' in., the pressure depending on the size and shape of the compacts. The average lead and zinc content of the ores mined and milled in the Joplin district is low as compared with that of other lead and zinc deposits throughout the United States. Because of this fact and of the high grade of the concentrates, the ratio of concentration is unusually high. Most of the operating companies have aimed to produce as high a grade of concentrate as possible in order to obtain the highest price for their product. They have done this at the sacrifice of the percentage of zinc recovered. The average percentage of zinc recovery is from 60 to 70 per cent. For percentage of recoveries from actual mill tests, see tables. The concentration is commonly effected by crushing the ore to ½-in. (12.7 mm.) size and subjecting it to a roughing and cleaning over two or more large Cooley jigs, of the Harz type, the finer sands being treated on the usual types of sand and slime tables. The treatment of slimes by flotation is being tested at several of the larger mills. Coarse Concentration When the ore has been hoisted from the mine it is dumped onto a chute leading to a grizzly made of iron bars, usually heavy rails, spaced 4 to 5 in. (101 to 127 mm.) apart. The oversize is caught on the grizzly, the mineralized pieces are broken with sledge hammers so as to pass through, and the boulders that are practically barren are sorted out by hand and trammed to the waste-rock pile. The proportion of waste rock thus sorted out varies from a fraction of 1 per cent. to 15 per cent., depending on the nature of the rock. Crushing The undersize material, 5 in. (127 mm.) or less in diameter, passes through the openings of the grizzly into the mill hopper below. From

Consideration was given to simple tests which could be performed on rocks to give a measure of rock drillability. Various methods of breaking rocks were considered and the hardness test developed by Schreiner was selected for this study. The test involves application of an increasing load on the rock face through a flat-faced cylindrical punch until rupture occurs. Test results show that hardness is a good measure of the breaking strength of rocks. Useful relationships are shown to exist between hardness and other physical quantities such as specific disintegration, Young's modulus and sonic velocity. Specific disintegration (volume of rock broken per unit of work input) provides a possible means of comparing the effectiveness of other methods of rock breakage. The relationship between hardness and sonic velocity may be very significant for it may be possible to deduce rock drillability from sonic log data. provided that a mineralogical factor is taken into account. TO test further the results of the work, laboratory drilling tests were performed which closely simulated down-hole pressure conditions. Correlations of drilling results with rock hardness measurements were quite good. It was concluded that rock hardness, as measured in the laboratory or as deduced from sonic logs, could be used in relations for predicting rock drilling performance. INTRODUCTION Drillability of rocks cannot be defined in an absolute manner by a single quantity or measured by a single test. Resistance of rock to drilling depends to a large extent upon the means used for rock destruction. This complicates drillability classification of rocks for there may be as many classifications as there are methods of rock breakage without known functional relations between them. The objective of this work was to develop. in terms of rock destruction behavior, means of selecting the best drilling method for a given rock or the conditions for optimum output from a given drilling method. ANALYSIS OF ROCK DESTRUCTION TESTS Gauthier and Baron' have reviewed the many test methods which have been developed for determining the resistance of rocks to breakage. These include drilling tests, punch tests, scratch tests, resistance to shock, wear tests, etc. A standard drilling test might be to determine the time required to drill a standard depth (1/16 in.) in a rock using a bi-cone microbit (1 1/4-in. diameter) when a standard load (417 Ib) is applied at a standard speed of bit rotation (110 rpm). From the standpoint of similarity, the results of microbit drilling tests would seem to be most representative of the several methods suggested above. However, evaluation of drilling performance by this method is only qualitative and cannot be applied directly to actual drilling conditions. Punch tests basically measure rock hardness. Punches of various shapes and sizes, including small cones for Vickers' and Knoop's tests, the wedge for Epstein's test and the right circular cylinder for Schreiner's test, have been used. Results of these tests lead to a quantitative hardness classification which would seem to be related to the resistance of rock to bit-tooth penetration. Scratch tests are related to the resistance of rocks to abrasion such as would be encountered in drilling with diamonds. Either the width of the scratch obtained at a fixed load or the load required to give a scratch of a fixed width may be used to evaluate surface hardness of the rock. This should be related to the resistance of the rock to wear. The above tests, and probably many others. give relative measurements of the breakage or destruction characteristics of rocks. There is no direct relation between results of these tests and the drillability of rocks. Also, the tests each measure different quantities which have different dimensions and they do not permit direct comparison of numerical values. As one step in rectifying the above difficulties. it is proposed that the results of all test methods be expressed in terms of volume of rock destroyed per unit of work required; this is referred to as "specific disintegration". Test results may then be reported in a form which shows both a classification of rocks in regard to each method and a comparison of methods with regard to each rock. The disadvantage in using specific disintegration is the difficulty of measuring this quantity with accuracy. The volume of rock damage is difficult to measure. as is the true value of work input. ThE materials used in this investigation were furnished by the Aluminum Co. of America and consisted of high-purity alurhinum (99.995 pct) and two aluminum-magnesium alloys containing approximately 2 and 5 pct Mg. The compositions of these alloys are listed in Table I. The materials were received as hot rolled 3/8-in. diam rods and were made from the same heats as the materials which were previously used in this laboratory.'j3 The rods were cold swaged to 1/4-in. diam by 1 in. long, and then had two parallel flats machined over the gage length 0.085 in. apart. The test bars were annealed for 10 min at 700° F, and strained 1 pct in tension at room temperature. They were electropolished (80 pct acetic acid; 20 pct perchloric acid, 70 pct concentration) at a temperature of 60°F at approximately 20 v. A grid, transverse or square, spaced 0.2 mm apart, was impressed by rolling a fine threaded screw (128 threads per in.) across the flat surfaces. The depth of the grooves was less than 5 p. For final annealing and grain size control the specimens were enclosed in aluminum foil and sealed in Vycor tubes. Annealing conditions varied from 1 hr at 700° F to 5 days at 1050° F, depending on the alloy content, to give for most of the specimens a final grain size of about 1 mm. This treatment was followed by electropol-ishing as described above. For the test series presented in Figs. 4 and 5 round specimens were used instead of flat ones, and fine machining marks served as marker lines instead of the impressed grid lines. Electropolishing was omitted. The major advantage is that the spacing of the machining marks is only about 1 u as compared to the 200 u of the impressed grid lines, permitting higher precision in strain measurements. Unfortunately the strain annealing necessary for grain size control also resulted in some preferred orientation of the grains. The preferred orientation of three arbitrary specimens was measured by X-ray diffraction methods and the averaged results are shown in Fig. 1. The possible effects of the preferred orientation on the test results will be discussed later. The testing temperatures were 410°, 515", 725", and 940° F, with one exception in the case of the 5.1 pct Mg alloy. Since the solubility limit of this alloy is 520°F, a test temperature of 545°F was cho-se sen instead of 515°F. The selection of the test temperature was based on two considerations: 1) at 900°F and above, extensive grain boundary migration made it more difficult to measure grain boundary sliding; 2) at 400°F and below, there was so little grain boundary sliding that it was again difficult to make precise measurements. The stress was chosen to give a creep rate of approximately 2.7 pct per hr in connection with Figs. 2

Most of the electron diffraction studies of oxide films which form on metals and alloys have been carried out by oxidizing the specimens in an auxiliary furnace, cooling down to room temperature and then inserting the sample in the camera and taking a diffraction photograph. Prior to the investigations at the Westinghouse Research Laboratories, no systematic study of the oxidation of any metal or alloy had been made over a wide temperature range with photographs taken at elevated temperatures except the investigation of iron by Jackson and Quarrell.' In order to interpret the electron diffraction patterns of the oxides which may form on alloys, it seemed advisable to make a comprehensive study of the oxidation of the purest metals available in the bulk form. Thus far studies have been completed on iron,2 cobalt,~ nickel,= chromium,= copper,z tungsten,s molybdenum,3 beryllium,' uranium,' thorium,' titanium6 and zirconium6 while investigations are in progress on tantalum and columbium. The next step in the study is concerned with the investigation of the oxides which form on binary alloys. Some of the alloys consist of a single phase while others contain more than one phase. The identification of the oxides on the surface of a binary alloy may be more difficult than on the metals since oxides containing both metals as well as those of each metal separately may form. Furthermore, it is possible that solid solutions of the various oxides may occur. In these cases the electron diffraction method may not be able to identify the oxidation products unequivocally. Examples of solid solutions which may present difficulties are MOO* and WOp, Fe304 and FeO.CrnOa since the diffraction patterns are so similar. Since electron diffraction can determine only the structure of the oxide, the chemical composition must be inferred from the diffraction data based upon X ray diffraction investigations of specimens of known composition. It is possible in some cases to decide whether a given solid phase reaction can occur on the surface of an alloy by a study of available thermodynamic data. Table I lists the equations for the formation of most of the oxides from the elements together with values of loglo Kg for the several temperatures. Activities of oxides in the ternary FeO-MnO-SiO system are calculated from data on the binaries, using the Gibbs -Schuhmann method. These activity data are used, together with thermodynamic relations, to calculate the contents of oxygen, silicon, and manganese in liquid iron, and the composition of the corresponding oxide phases in equilibrium with it. Excellent agreement was found between calculated and experimental metal compositions, indicating that thermodynamic methods, such as those presented, can supply useful data on slag-metal equilibria, and are therefore capable of wider application. When molten steel containing oxygen is treated with a deoxidizer, the product of the reaction is composed of the oxides of the deoxidizing elements together with more or less iron oxide. This assemblage of oxides is presumably very close to equilibrium with the melt since it is formed directly from elements dissolved in it. Therefore, it is likely that metal analyses corresponding to a given oxide phase composition are calculable with considerable precision where sufficient information is available on activities in both phases. The present study was made to test this hypothesis in the case of deoxidation by silicon and manganese. Here experimental data on the relationship among oxygen, silicon, and manganese in the metal phase are available, as are activity data for the MnO-SiO2, FeO-SiO2, and FeO-MnO binary systems. A further objective was to demonstrate in a specific example how gaps in the data may be filled by judicious interpolation, and how the Gibbs-Schuhmann method is applied to obtain activities in ternary systems. The rigorous derivation of the latter, requiring considerable facility in handling partial differential equations, tends to mask the real simplicity of the method, and repel the very engineers and experimenters who would benefit the most from its use. I) GENERAL PROCEDURE Deoxidation of steel with silicon and manganese results in the formation of two phases, metal and oxide. The number of components is four—Fe, Mn, Si, and 0. The phase rule then gives the number of degrees of freedom: If temperature and pressure are fixed, 2 deg of freedom remain. Consequently, it suffices to fix the concentration of two of the components of the system for all the concentrations to be determined and, at least in principle, calculable. The practical problem is then to discover a straightforward method of calculation with a minimum of trial and error solutions. The type of reactions to be dealt with are like the following: Si (in steel) + 2 O(in steel) = SiO2(in oxide phase) The standard free energy of this reaction is readily obtained from the literature, so that the equilibrium constant can be calculated by the expression: Since the metallurgist is concerned with percentages rather than activities, a real solution requires information that will permit activities to be converted to concentrations. This information is fairly adequate for the elements dissolved in molten steel, but is not available for the FeO-MnO-SiO2 oxide system. Therefore, the first step in this study was to find the relation between activity and concentration for the three oxides making up the system. The next step was the calculation of slag and metal compositions that are in equilibrium with one another. As shown by the phase rule, it is sufficient to assume the values of two composition variables in order to calculate the rest. But which two are picked makes a vast difference in how difficult the calculation turns out to be, so that it is necessary to make preliminary trial of several routes to find the easiest one. A convenient method is to begin with the slag, and to pick FeO concentration and that of one of the other oxides. Starting with the relation between oxygen dissolved in the liquid steel and FeO in the slag permits a good first estimate to be made of the oxygen content of the steel in equilibrium with FeO, because the iron content being fairly close to 100 pct, Fe has an activity close to unity. Using this first estimate of oxygen activity, approximate values of the manganese and silicon contents of the melt are readily calculated from the appropriate equilibrium constants. In the Carlsbad area potash is dry-mined and wet-concentrated. Wet concentration involves recircu-lation of saturated brines, with resultant difficulties of brine disposal and inherent losses in recovery through solution of the KCl. A dry beneficiation process for potash minerals would offer many advantages over present methods. International Minerals & Chemical Corp. has been working on development of a dry process for some time. This article is a progress report. Potash ores available in this country are largely mixtures of halite and sylvite contaminated with slimes and often with many sulfate and magnesium minerals. Electrostatic concentration of KCl when the contaminating minerals are in low percentage has been accomplished. Continuous production of better than 60 pct K2O concentrate from high potassium sulfate ores has not been demonstrated at the present time. Laboratory Procedure: Laboratory work on electrostatic beneficiation of potash minerals has been carried out using both pure crystals and mined ore. Electrostatic separation of the two main components of potash ore, sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), is accomplished by first heat-treating the ore to allow for electric charging of the particles. Preferential exchange of' electrical charges between different mineral particles through surface contact is the principal mechanism involved. After proper conditioning of the particle surfaces, the oppositely charged minerals are dropped vertically into a horizontal electric field having a field gradient from about 5000 to 15,000 v per in. The particles are free-falling in the field. A suitable power supply is used to produce the proper total voltage for the electric field. Total required voltage is, of course, a function of electrode spacing. A typical electrode arrangement with power supply is shown in Fig. 1. In general, the total voltage on any system is 75,000 to 90,000 v. Power consumption is negligible, as leakage at insulators and corona discharge are the main losses in the system. Optimum preheat temperatures for pure material components generally are not the same as for mined minerals. Fig. 2 shows clearly that maximum recovery on a 50 pct pure KCl, 50 pct pure NaCl mixture occurs at a preheat temperature of about 600°F. In this test the preheat mixture was allowed to cool to about 225°F before dropping through the electric field. The optimum temperature for sep- aration is practically never the optimum temperature of preheat. Optimum separation for mined Carlsbad potash ores occurs when a preheat temperature closer to 900°F is used, as shown by Fig. 3, which plots percent sylvite (KCl) in the concentrate and tails as a function of preheat temperatures. Here again the ore was allowed to cool to about 225°F before separation. It should be noted that efficiency of separation increases continuously with increasing preheat temperatures until incipient fusion of the ore takes place at about 950°F. The increase in optimum preheat temperature for Carlsbad ores over the pure minerals can be traced to the effect of the clay slimes intimately associated with the mined potash. If the slimes associated with the ore are removed by washing with alcohol or other non-aqueous material, the necessity of preheating to the high temperature is removed. This temperature range has been proved critical within these limits during continuous pilot plant operation. Concentrate and tailings grade and optimum recovery also are functions of the temperature of the potash mineral particles during separation in the electric field. Fig. 4 presents data indicating that feed to the rougher pass should range between 150°F and 275°F for best results. It has been found by subsequent pilot plant work that these temperatures can be maintained in actual operation.

10.5-1. Introduction. In the not-too-distant past, maintenance and the facilities for maintenance were considered a necessary evil to be given only secondary consideration in the development and planning of a surface mine operation. With the increasing sophistication of mining equipment and machinery, this concept has been replaced; and today's mine managers recognize that planning for adequate maintenance facilities is as important to a successful operation as a sound mining plan. This chapter will present the basic maintenance facilities and the fundamental considerations necessary to meet the varied requirements of surface mining. 10.5-2. Determination of Shop Facilities. The size, shape, and extent of maintenance facilities are contingent on the general mining plan, the location relative to outside facilities, and to the available capital. The type of construction employed is dependent on climatic conditions and preference. HAULAGE SYSTEMS. The type of haulage equipment used will dictate the kind of shops needed. Truck haulage requires entirely different facilities than rail haulage. Some mines will employ both systems, and can include hoists, skips, or conveyor belts in combination with locomotives or trucks. The requirements of each type will be discussed. MAINTENANCE ORGANIZATION. The pre-planning decision as to centralized maintenance vs. area maintenance, or a combination of both, will greatly affect the maintenance facilities required. A single pit with relatively short travel from shops to pit will probably have a centralized maintenance system. The structure of wrought iron as usually described by metallographists and workers in metal in general is that of a fairly pure iron. Impurities, if present, are usually considered as being in solid solution in the crystals of the ferrite matrix or as forming part of the ever present "slag streaks." Attention is herein directed to one type of these dissolved impurities; to the detection of such impurities, particularly in low-grade irons, and to their possible influence on the physical properties of the metal. The attention of the Bureau of Standards was first directed to wrought iron of the peculiar and unusual characteristics to be described later, in material which had failed in service and was submitted for test. The examination was extended to other grades of wrought iron, to see whether such features are of common occurrence in this class of material. MICROSTRUCTURE OF WROUGHT IRON Usual Structure The general microstructure of wrought iron is so well known that a detailed description of it here is needless. There is shown in Fig. 2 the structure of a sample of Swedish iron which illustrates well the matrix of ferrite crystals in which are embedded the slag threads so characteristic of the puddling process and the subsequent working of the material. The usual commercial product contains varying amounts of the impurities commonly associated with iron and steel, i,e,, manganese, phosphorus, silicon, and sulphur together with small amounts of carbon. Of these, the larger part of the phosphorus and some of the silicon present are held in solid solution in the ferrite while most of the remaining impurities, other than carbon, exist in the in closures of slag. Aside from the discontinuities introduced by the slag streaks the ferrite matrix has the microstructure and appearance of a pure metal. No definite orientation of the various crystals or grains is apparent; deep etching of the specimens reveals no intracrystalline features (i.e., within the grains) other than those noted in " pure " metals in general (etching pits).

Gentlemen of the American Institute of Mining Engineers.—As you well know an application is about to be made to Congress, by the American Society of Civil Engineers, for the appointment of a cornmission composed of persons skilled in the production and use of iron, steel, and other structural materials, whose duty it shall be to test the strength, elasticity, and other quatities of such materials ; not simply the substances used as such, but the members of large structures composed of such materials, of the forms and sizes in which they are actually used. As I understand, the papers that will be read here to-night will have for their object to show the necessity for such tests, and therefore the necessity for the commission asked for. As the representative of the Society of Civil Engineers, I have to thank you, gentlemen of the Mining Engineers, for the great zeal with which yon have taken up this subject, and seconded the efforts of the Civil Engineers; or, perhaps I ought rather to say, initiated the efforts to get a suitable commission appointed to obtain most vitally important information which it is admitted on all hands we do not now possess. In drawing up the memorial to Congress, in connection with some of the ablest and best informed of our Society, and in all the discossions on the subject, I have been struck with the emphasis with which the confession is made, that so little is known of the strength of the larger-sized members constantly used in building structures of the magnitude which the present requirements of the country now demand. Many of the problems that occur in the preparation plant originate from practices in the mine. Impurities in raw coal can be in the seam itself or from extraneous material taken in mining from the roof or bottom. In the case of underground mines, the choice of mining equipment will affect the size consist and the amount of extraneous material included with the coal. Also, governmental regulations concerning the degree of rock dusting, gobbing underground, and cleanup have increased the dirt in raw coal. Sulfur dioxide emission standards, on the other hand, are pressuring the coal industry to clean coal more thoroughly. Coal supplied for coking purposes is nearly all upgraded by washing, while for the largest market, electric power generation, a high proportion is shipped as a raw product with processing, in whole or in part, only necessary when excess impurities are mined with the coal. This chapter will deal primarily with plants that process or wash coal to some extent (Fig. 1) and only incidentally with mines shipping raw run-of-mine coal crushed to a top size of, usually, 51 to 102 mm (2 to 4 in.), with little, if any, other treatment. JUSTIFICATION FOR COAL PREPARATION During the past decade, major changes have occurred affecting the market, profit, and long-range planning of the coal industry. Mining companies have become "partners" with consumers at many new and some old mines, both for steam and metallurgical coals. Coal properties have become "assigned" tonnages at mutually agreed upon conditions and prices. Lower unit-train tariffs have been instrumental in helping coal markets to compete against oil and nuclear energy. Coal prices for power plants are still on a Btu (British thermal unit)

Electrical prospecting is the art of exploring the structure of the subsoil in regard to conductivity variations and interpreting the results of such exploration as to their geological meaning. Electrical prospecting has been applied during the last few years with outstanding success, not only to prospecting1 for ore but also to structural studies.2 Both applications have proved helpful to the geologist, and the latter application especially promises to become of still greater importance in the future. The mapping of structures is the most important function of the oil geologist. Oil is lighter than water, therefore in water-bearing beds it will migrate upward until the migration is stopped by a bed impermeable to the oil. Geologic structures such as domes, anticlines, faults and terraces, offer good prospects in the search for oil accumulations and can be traced easily by electrical prospecting, provided they are composed of a series of sedimentary layers of which at least one possesses fair electrical conductivity and follows the general trend of the structure. Conditions for Successful Mapping The first condition, fair electrical conductivity, is met in almost any oil-bearing series, because generally the electrical resistance of a sedimentary bed is identical with the resistance of the more or less saline waters, filling partly or entirely the pores of the rocks.3 Briefly, the electrical resistivity of a bed can be expressed for all practical purposes by the product R X P, where R is the specific resistance of the waters in the rock pores and P a factor depending upon the percentage of water by volume in the rock.
