THIS investigation is a part of the United States Bureau of Mines work in conserving the Nation's resources. The isothermal sections presented were developed as a guide to a comprehensive investigation of the properties and fabricating characteristics of copper-base alloys containing manganese and tin. These alloys are being investigated as possible replacements for the commercial bronzes containing substantial quantities of tin. Development of the isothermal sections has, therefore, been limited to the area between 0 to 20 pct Mn and 0 to 25 pct Sn. Since Heusler1 reported the ferromagnetic properties of the Cu-Mn-Sn alloys in 1903, the system has been the subject of several investigations. These studies were largely concerned with correlation of magnetic properties and crystal structure.2-6 Vero,' however, established the solidus surface of the system, between 20 pct Mn and 40 pct Sn, by thermal and microscopic methods. The a, ß, and y solid solutions were also observed by Vero and reported to extend into the interior of the ternary system. For the present study, the annotated diagram of the Cu-Sn system prepared by Raynor' and the Cu-Mn diagram by Dean and coworkers9 were used as the binary borders of the ternary system. Procedure The metals used in this investigation were electrolytic manganese, washed cathode copper, and three-star tin. The manganese, produced at the Boulder City pilot plant of the Bureau of Mines, had a purity of 99.9 pct; the copper contained less than 0.004 pct Bi and 0.001 pct S; the tin contained 0.070 pct Pb, 0.070 pct Sb, 0.050 pct Fe, and 0.065 pct Si. Heats of 1 lb were melted in alundum crucibles with a 3-kw induction furnace. The heats were chill-cast in iron or copper molds to form 6-in. ingots 3/4 in. in diameter. Molds were washed with graphite or zirconia, depending on the manganese content, and preheated to 150°C. The maximum impurity content of any alloy was 0.03 pct Fe, 0.02 pct Si, and 0.02 pct Al; in most cases, they contained less than half this quantity of any of these impurities. Composition of the alloys and their treatment prior to homogenizing are shown in Fig. 1. Designations adjacent to each composition refer to the heat numbers. With a few exceptions, ingots containing 20 pct Sn or less were hot-swaged. These ingots were swaged, after a 24-hr preheat at 650°C, to obtain a total reduction of 70 pct in cross section. Intermittent reheating was necessary, and reductions were limited to either 0.025 or 0.050 in. in diameter per pass. Selection of a 200-hr homogenizing treatment was based on extensive experiments which indicated that virtual equilibrium was reached after 150 hr. Structures were retained by quenching in water. Grain sizes in the specimens homogenized at 350" and 450°C were generally small. These homogenizing treatments were preceded by a 50-hr anneal at 650°C to facilitate phase identification by increasing the grain size in these specimens. The specimens were furnace-cooled from this temperature to the homogenizing temperature, and the heat treatment was continued for the standard 200-hr period. The homogenized samples were bisected to provide an internal section for metallographic examination. Optimum definition of the microstructure was obtained by successive polishing and etching. Quarter-strength ASTM copper reagent No. 13 gave the most satisfactory results.10 Filings from interior sections of the samples were used for diffraction studies. These filings were annealed in evacuated glass tubes at homogenizing temperatures for periods exceeding 50 hr and quenched in water. During this treatment the manganese content was reduced by significant amounts, probably by vaporization. This change in composition was considered in applying the diffraction data, which were used only as a means of identifying phases where the data were consistent with the metallographic evidence. Phase Identification The a solid solution is readily distinguished by the copper-colored, twinned, polyhedral grains, as shown in Fig. 2, and a face-centered cubic X-ray pattern. Tukon indentations, using a 25-g load, indicate a Knoop hardness of 155 for a quenched from 650°C. Using white light developed by a Wratten 78 A filter, the ß grains in etched specimens have a dark brown tint in contrast to the lighter copper-colored grains of the a phase. Knoop hardness values of 284 were obtained for the ß structure in specimens quenched from 650°C. The ß structure was also distinguished from the a phase by its body-centered cubic lattice. Stress measurements taken at Climax, El Teniente, Henderson, Lakeshore and Urad mines indicate that the deposits cited are generally subject to an inclined stress field that can be highly anisotropic. The horizontal stresses vary significantly between deposits and exceed the measured vertical stresses at Henderson and El Teniente mines. Experience at Henderson, Lakeshore and Urad mines is used to suggest a relationship between cavability and the premining stress. In poorly fractured, high strength rock masses, high stresses can assist the caving process. In well fractured, low strength rock masses, caving is ensured by breakage along fracture planes. The relationship between ground weight and the premining stress is also investigated. Ground weight problems appear to be most related to the competence of the ground rather than the magnitude of the premining stress as supported by experience at Climax and El Teniente mines. Recent developments in block caving favor the extraction of poorly fractured, high stressed rock. Accompanying the development of these deposits are new problems such as rock bursts. These pose particular problems to mine designers in that no experience currently exists in combatting rock burst problems at block caving mines.

A simple graphical method is presented for the determination of climb forces on dislocations exerted by uniaxial stresses. In conjunction with standard stereographic projections, the technique is applicable for any crystal system. Climb forces on glide dislocations in bcc crystals are determined as an application. In connection with a study1 of elevated temperature creep of molybdenum single crystals, a detailed analysis of the climb force on a dislocation was necessary. In general, such forces can be calculated for an arbitrary dislocation segment from the Peach-Koehler equation2 (or one of its variants3"6) where Fk are the components of the force per unit length of dislocation line, ?i of the unit sense vector tangent to the line, ojl of the stress tensor, bl of the dislocation Burgers vector, and is the Einstein permutation operator with components ?123 = ?231 = ?321 = —?132 = — ?321 = —?—213 = unity, and all other components zero. It is understood in the suffix notation of Eq. [I.] that repeated indices are to be summed over 1, 2, and 3. For the most general coordinate system, the matrix manipulations required to solve Eq. [I] are fairly complex. However, a simplification can be achieved by specifying a coordinate system based on the dislocation in question. The pertinent system involves cartesian coordinates xi, x;, xi, with attendant unit vectors e'i; ei being parallel to the Burgers vector b, and e'3; being parallel to the climb directions (b x ?), i.e., normal to the slip plane. In this coordnate system b = (bi, 0, 0) and ? = (?'1,?'2, 0). Hence, Eq. [I] yields for the climb force per unit length F3 = ?'2s'11b'1—?'1s'12b'1 [2] The first term on the right side of Eq. [2] is the climb force on the edge component of the dislocation, while the second is the (cross-slip) force normal to the glide plane acting on the screw component. Thus, the problem of determining the climb force reduces to that of resolving the stress components —il and s'12 in the xi coordinate system. Several authors7- l0 have shown, for the glide case, that such stress resolution can be performed most readily by graphical methods. Therefore, we present a similar method for the climb case. Of the suggested methods, we follow that of Hartley and Hirth,9 which can be performed directly with a standard stereographic projection for the crystal system in question. We treat the case of simple tension, or compression, this being the most common creep test in which climb is important. A set of cartesian coordinates (x1, x2, x3) is fixed with x3 parallel to the specimen axis. This set is connected to the x'i set by the factors defined in Table I. A perspective view of the coordinate systems relating them to the glide ellipse, is given in Fig. 1, while a stereographic projection of the coordinate systems is presented in Fig. 2. Discussion of the paper of CHARLES COLCOCK JONES, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 105, September, 1915, pp. 1887 to 1898. D. A. LYON, Salt Lake City, Utah.-For some years I have been interested in the iron-ore deposits of the Pacific Coast, and I feel very much indebted to Mr. Jones for the information he has given us on this subject. I think that we are also very much indebted to him for having presented this paper, as he has given us reliable data in shape of facts and figures, which is just what we need in considering whether or not it would be commercially feasible to attempt to establish an iron and steel industry on the Pacific Coast. Personally, due to lack of market, I do not think it is a commercially feasible proposition at the present time. Mr. Jones states that pig iron can be produced on this coast as cheaply as it can be produced in Pittsburgh. Even. so, what can be done, with it after it is produced? To begin with, iron produced on the. Pacific Coast has to compete with iron produced in China. Last year I had occasion to investigate the subject of the market for iron and, steel on the Pacific slope, and found that it was possible for the producers of Chinese iron to sell it for much less than the price for which iron can be produced in the West, and also for less than eastern pig iron is now sold for, even when shipped through the Panama Canal. I was informed that the agents for Chinese iron had instructions to sell it for $1 or $2 less per ton than that asked for other irons on the market. Of course, I realize that the competition of Chinese iron may not be important, but even if it is not, and even though pig iron ,can be produced at the cost given by Mr. Jones in his paper, I do not see any immediate chance of its being so produced, due to lack of market. C. C. JONES, Los Angeles, Cal.-Mr. Lyon is right. It is a fact that Chinese pig is being sold in San Francisco on some large contracts at $18.50 a ton, while $19 is the usual price. We ought to produce iron. on this coast at $14. Personally I do not think Chinese iron is ever going to be an important factor. It is a bugbear out here now. You are not going to have much Chinese pig iron in .this country. Our little friend Japan is going to absorb everything it can. The price of Chinese pig iron at $18 is about as low as it will ever get. If we can show you that we can produce this iron here at the same price as at Pittsburgh, I. think you will have a good opportunity to compete with anything China or India can ever do. Costs there are very low now. They are going to come up by leaps and bounds in the next few years. The labor cost over there may be very low now, but I. have seen some men from there quite recently

This paper reports investigative work conducted to develop a method of estimating the groundwater influx from a homogeneous permeable formation into a vertical mine shaft during sinking. A method of analysis was developed using data obtained from pumping tests and a modification of the Theis non-equilibrium interpretation technique. Excess influx of groundwater into mine shafts has long been one of the more important problems encountered in the development of a mining property. Much work has been done on methods of preventing such influx and on pumping schemes to control inflow if preventive measures fail. The fundamental aspects of the problem, on the other hand, seem to have been neglected. The purpose of this paper is to review the fundamentals of groundwater flow and to propose a rapid method of analyzing hydrologic data in order to estimate influx from a homogeneous permeable formation into a mine shaft. Such an estimate of the quantity of water to be encountered is of value in planning grouting, pumping and other programs designed to control that influx. It is emphasized that the proposed method of analysis should be regarded only as a tool to be used in evaluating the problem before investing the capital necessary to begin development of a property. FUNDAMENTALS OF GROUNDWATER FLOW In order to effectively approach the problem of estimating influx into a mine shaft, a knowledge of the fundamentals of fluid flow through a porous medium is necessary. Darcy, in 1856, developed an empirical relationship to explain the flow of water through sand filters. This relationship V = k (dh/dl), is the basis for all other flow formulae. It has been shown that Darcy's relation is a solution of the Laplace equation and thus is analagous to other natural phenomena such as heat flow. Theis, using the analogy of heat flow by conduction, developed an expression for determining the transient or time-dependent groundwater flow through a homogeneous, isotropic medium. The resulting equation Was also derived by Jacob using hydrologic considerations alone.' The individual terms in the equation are described in Table I. It is important to understand the assumptions upon which this equation is based. 1) The medium through which the fluid flows is infinite in areal extent, homogeneous and isotropic. 2) The well into which the fluid discharges completely penetrates the medium. 3) The characteristics of the medium remain constant at all times. 4) The initial pressure surface is horizontal. 5) The confining media are impervious and horizontal. 6) Fluid is removed from storage instantaneously by a decline in pressure. 7) The diameter of the discharge well is infinitesimal with respect to the drainage radius of the medium.

On the basis of experiments con- ducted on quartz using a bubble pick-up method, it was shown in an earlier paper1 that this mineral will preferentially adsorb hydrogen, calcium, or sodium ions, depending on the relative concentrations of those ions in the solution in which the quartz is immersed. For quartz particles ranging in size from 0.2 to 1 mm, it was demonstrated that the concentration of calcium in solution (assumed present as ions) necessary to completely activate quartz for flotation is given by the expression: In this expression, ionic concentrations are in mols per liter. It was further shown that the pick-up method is apparently more sensitive to changes in reagent concentration than the standard captive-bubble method, and that induction times are apparently much reduced. Since completing these earlier tests, a new type of cell has been constructed; this is shown in Fig 1 and 2. In Fig 1, A is a ground joint, B is a ceutral tube reaching to within a few millimeters of the bottom of the cell, and C is a stopper which may be removed for re- agent addition, and serves the further purpose of excluding carbon dioxide from the air during the test. The entire cell is constructed of Pyrex glass, and does not give the trouble experienced with the earlier cell, in which activating ions were released from the glass at high pH values. DUE to its location in the Atacama Desert, one of the most barren of the earth's surfaces, Chuquicamata's water supply presents unusual problems. Yearly rain-fall averages less than one tenth of an inch at the plant. However, there are summer showers above 12,000 ft in the Cordillera to the east, the resulting run-off flowing through old river valleys buried beneath more recent volcanic formations, to be impounded within sediment-filled basins. This water emerges at springs where the outlets of these basins are blocked by lava flows, and here are formed the small streams which feed the only important river of the region, the Rio Loa. Chuquicamata's water is obtained from these springs and rivulets. [ ] The map above indicates four pipe lines from which potable and industrial water are supplied. Potable water, amounting to 4500 metric tons per day, is conveyed in the Toconce pipe line from springs 59 miles due east of Chuquicamata. This water is used not only for drinking, but also for boilers and other needs requiring high quality. For industrial water at the oxide plant, there are two 12-in. pipe lines from the Rio San Pedro, carrying a total of 17,000 metric tons per day of slightly brackish water. This water is at present used mainly for leaching and for hygienic purposes. Water Source Found For the present and future needs of the sulphide plant, it was calculated that at least 32,000 metric tons per day of make-up water would be required. For this purpose, a pipe line of 44 miles length was constructed to bring in the entire flow of the Arroyo Salado, one of the eastern tributaries of the Loa. The salt content of this water is so high (over 5000 parts per million of solubles, mostly chlorides) that it is highly detrimental to farming, and the Chilean Government had been studying projects to separate these waters from others of the Loa system in order to improve agricultural conditions in the fertile valley of Calama. So it happened that the Government was willing to award rights to the Arroyo Salado waters under agreement whereby the Mining Company removes waters from the Rio Loa system above Calama for all time. The outlet of these waters, after serving their purpose at the new concentrator and leaving the plant in tailing, is the Salar de Talabre, an old salt lake which presents fully ten square miles of surface to serve as an evaporating pan, the outlets having now been blocked by dams. Here the dry climate of Chuquicamata is a favourable factor, evaporation averaging slightly above 1/4 in. per day. The Toconce and San Pedro pipe lines have been functioning from 26 to 34 years, and through the use of special cleaning tools which were developed at the plant, as well as deaeration of the more active Toconce water, these pipes are now maintained at capacities which do not diminish as years go on. Constructing the Dam The Arroyo Salado pipe line design and construction involved certain special and interesting features, and inasmuch as this line and its intake works are solely for the needs of the new sulphide plant, more detailed description is given. The waters are impounded at a gravity dam constructed of concrete to a height of 100 ft above the river bed, keyed into the precipitous Dacite walls of the narrow canyon (barely 6-ft wide at the bottom, only 25-ft width at 50 ft above). A small secondary dam was built 100 ft down stream from the main dam, providing a pool of 15-ft depth to protect the main structure from flood flows over the spill-way during the rainy season. A system of four 36-in. syphons was designed for discharging these flood waters from the lower depths of the lake, in order to avoid eventual sedimentation behind the dam. The lake has a length of 3300 ft, and its water level is controlled by an adjustable spillway permitting draw-down of eighty inches, amounting to 41,000 metric tons of available capacity. This regulation is necessary because of wide fluctuations in stream flow between day and night due to freezing of feeders. THERE has been much research and commercial development in recent years in the use of chromium and nickel in steels of various types, including those intended for high-temperature service. By "high-tem-perature steels" are meant those specifically designed for service at ele-vated temperatures in steam plants, oil refineries and other industries where high-temperature operations are conducted. This paper is devoted to some preliminary data on the effect of silicon on certain of the most popular chromium-molybdenum steels now being used in quantity by the refining industry and includes a short statement on the influence of copper in steels intended for high-temperature service.

The system Nh-Ir was investigated over the complete concentration range by metallography and X-my techniques, using forty one alloys. The solubility limits of terminal and intermediate phases and the solidus temperatures were determined. Five intermediate phases were found: a Nb3Ir, cubic, Cr3O type; tetragonal, ofecr thorhomhic, isostruc-turn1 with (ta-Rh); and a Nhlr3. cubic, AuCu, type. a Nb3lr and a Nbfr3 melt congruently; three eutectic and three pentectic reactions occur. The phase diagram of the Nb-Ir system had not been fully treated in the literature; only surveys of intermediate phases were found.1"5 In this study, the details of the phase boundaries were investigated as well as the crystallography of the intermediate phases. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The experimental procedures such as arc melting of powder compacts, heat treatments, solidus measurements, X-ray, and metallographic observation were identical with those used in the work on the Nb-Rh phase diagram.&apos; They will therefore not be repeated here except where the conditions differed. The purity of the niobium powder was as stated in Ref. 6; the iridium powder of 99.9+ pct purity from J. Bishop and Co., Malvern, Penn., did not contain impurities exceeding 100 ppm, except rhodium (200 ppm). The melting points and vapor pressures of both elements are very similar. This fact contributed to a very small weight loss on melting and facilitated preparation of homogeneous alloys. As shown in Ref. 6 for Nb-Rh, no oxygen pick-up exceeding 200 ppm had to be considered; this was regarded as valid also for Nb-Ir. A total of forty one alloys were used in the determination of the phase diagram; their concentrations are shown in Fig. l, which presents the phase diagram. The concentration limits as determined by the weight-loss method averaged <0.2 at. pct, and never exceeded 0.5 at. pct. Heat treatments were carried out as described in Ref. 6. Depending on the concentration, only tantalum, tungsten, or iridium containers were employed, avoiding oxide crucibles altogether. Alloys from 0 to 25 and from 65 to 100 at. pct Ir were homogenized at 2095°C for 15 hr, intermediate compositions from 25 to 65 at. pct Ir for 65 hr at 1780°C. A typical annealing-time schedule is presented in Table I. Solidus points were measured as described in Ref. 6 with the modification that samples rich in niobium were held between pieces of tantalum foil and samples of high iridium concentrations were held between rhenium platelets or in iridium wire. After each run it was ascertained metallographically that no reaction with the holder had occurred. Rhenium was selected as holder material after it had been shown in separate tests that the melting points of Re-Ir alloys rise continuously from 2440°C. Metallographic examination was carried out as described in Ref. 6, and the same procedure and etchants were used successfully. While metallographic discrimination between a Nb3lr and o was easily possible, X-ray diffraction was necessary to separate al and ct2. X-ray powder patterns were taken and evaluated as for Nb-Rh6 yielding the error limits indicated in Table 111, to be introduced later. For the determination of the invariant reactions and phase boundaries, the same techniques as for Nb-Rh6 applied. The general accuracy of invariant concentrations is regarded as somewhat higher than for Nb-Rh due to the small slope of most solvus lines.

FROM the time of its establishment in 1933, the Tennessee Valley Authority has been active in the field of phosphates. Under the T.V.A. Act it has a broad Congressional mandate to guide a unified development of the resources of the region for the long-range benefit of the people. As one phase of this function, it is directed to co-operate with farmers in the experimental large-scale use of improved fertilizers and development of better fertilizer practices. Following careful study, it was concluded that the objectives of this phase could best be attained by soil rebuilding through the use of phosphatic fertilizer and lime in an improved farm management sys- tem. This activity was launched through a program of test and demonstration on farms and simultaneous technical investigations to develop new and improved phosphatic fertilizers. Phosphorus has since become a keystone of the Authority&apos;s resource development and conservation program. Human effort is being conserved by phosphate utilization on the farm, and mineral conservation has been promoted by technical developments in phosphate mining and manufacturing operations.

THE increase in the number of coal-cleaning plants employing dense-medium processes occurring since 1946 is especially interesting when viewed historically. Both sand and magnetite were introduced as material for heavy mediums at about the same time, sand in the Chance process in 1921 and magnetite in the Conklin process in 1922, but from that point on their records diverge. The Chance process enjoyed a steady growth from its inception, whereas no additional magnetite plants were built in the United States for over 20 years. Then, following the close of the World War 11, magnetite was again introduced, this time with marked success. During the following years some 47 plants employing magnetite medium were built. This rapid growth of dense-medium cleaning has been concurrent with widespread adoption of full-seam mining on one hand and a return to a more competitive market on the other. At a time when changing mining practice has provided cleaning plants with dirtier coal and changing market conditions have simultaneously demanded a cleaner product, the industry has through necessity turned to improved preparation. The inherently greater sharpness with which dense-medium processes can separate coal from impurity is thus helping to hold the line against ever-increasing mining costs and at the same time assisting materially in retaining badly needed markets. Although dense-medium cleaning unquestionably offers a distinct advantage when the washing problem is difficult, other methods can provide almost equally high efficiency when the coal is easy to wash. Moreover, fine coal cannot yet be treated by heavy medium in a proved process, although the Driessen cyclone is in the pilot-plant stage. Most of the present types of dense-medium equipment have been in use only a few years, and the dearth of information in the literature concerning their performance characteristics is entirely understandable, Nevertheless this information is necessary if the process is to be intelligently applied to individual cleaning problems. Without data on the efficiency of a process in a particular type of separation, it is difficult to assess the advantage to be expected from it. Similarly, the role of particle size in heavy-medium separation is important in some cases, yet there is little published information on this aspect. To mention only one more of the numerous points on which essential information is lacking, the bearing of medium characteristics on performance has been discussed only in qualitative terms. It was with the hope of providing information on some of these points that the Bureau of Mines built a dense-medium pilot plant for cleaning coal at its Northwest Experiment Station in Seattle in 1950. The plant has been operated continuously since that time, and over 50 runs have been made on 7 coals exhibiting a wide range of washability characteristics. An idea of the magnitude of this work will be gained from the fact that examination of the plant products has involved some 600 float-and-sink separations and about 2500 ash determinations. A laboratory pilot plant is especially well adapted to investigate many aspects of performance because close control over test conditions can be exercised and because a large number of tests can be made rapidly. On the other hand, factors such as consumption of medium and other cost items can be investigated satisfactorily only in a commercial plant. Actually, the two forms of investigation should be complementary, with the laboratory work pointing the way for confirming tests in commercial units. Pilot Plant The dense-medium pilot plant employed for this work comprises a 24x30-in. drum-type separating vessel, a 12-in. densifier, a 12-in. magnetic separator, a 26-in. x 9-ft vibrating screen, and the necessary pumps and conveyors for handling materials. Arrangement of these units corresponds with the flowsheet used in most commercial plants, except that a thickener is not provided for the feed to the magnetic separator. Coal and refuse discharge from the separating drum to the vibrator, which is divided longitudinally down the center. Medium draining through the first 3 ft of the screen is recirculated directly to the drum. Sprays on the middle 3 ft of the screen rinse medium from the products, and the last 3-ft section is for dewatering. Dilute medium from the rinsing and dewatering sections is pumped to the magnetic separator, where magnetic solids are recovered. These are pumped to the densifier, from which they return to the medium-drainage sump by gravity through a demagnetizing coil. The drum-type separating vessel is a scale model of a commercial unit. Feed enters axially at one end of the drum just below the surface of the bath, and float material overflows through a circular opening at the other end. Particles sinking to the bottom of the bath are picked up by lifting flights bolted to the inner wall of the drum, elevated out of the bath, and sluiced to the vibrating screen. Baffles suspended in the bath prevent float material from entering the sink-lifting flights. About 8 gpm of medium is used to sluice the feed into the drum. An additional 15 to 24 gpm, depending upon operating conditions, is added through two pipes dipping into the bath behind the baffle on the side where the sink-lifting flights enter the bath. The bath available for separation is 2 ft long and 13 in. wide, giving an area of 2.08 sq ft. Depth of bath from the surface to the top of the sink-lifting flights, measured vertically below the axis, is 6 in.

Some recent deposits show rather high activity as; for example, the deep sea oozes and some lake deposits.lv2 Measurements made in boreholes have also shown considerable changes in activity from horizon to horizon. The first to publish data on this fact was Ambronn,3 and recently Russian geophysicists have shown remarkable variations of activity from one layer to the next in various wells. Spak4 felt even that he was able to line up horizons from data measured in two neighboring wells.‡ The measuring of radioactive radiation is fairly difficult. Large errors are possible by the circulation of gaseous emanations in the well and porous strata. It is, therefore, never certain whether the activity of the layer where the instrumental device or collector is located will be measured, or that of some adjacent layer. For this reason it seemed to be advantageous to take samples of rocks into the laboratory and test them there for their contents of radioactive material. Such a method has been followed in the past to distinguish radioactive ore from other rocks. Radioactivity of rocks, especially of the igneous type, was also determined in the laboratory by numerous authors for absolute age investigations.= Corresponding data from studies of sedimentary formations are scarce. Specimens taken from a core of the Bradford oil sandstone were tested by Landsberg and Ingham,7 with the results illustrated in Fig. 1, which shows that within relatively small vertical distances the differences of relative activity were considerable. In an article published in the Iron Trade Review,&apos; I gave a convenient arrangement for the installation of wet and dry bulb thermometers for use in making moisture determinations in the air being blown into a blast furnace, and also gave a chart for use in obtaining moisture values from the thermometer readings. The data from which this chart was prepared were obtained from the tables in use by the U. S. Weather Bureau.2 The work of Carrier3 has shown that these tables are somewhat in error. He has recalculated the values for moisture as referred to wet and dry bulb thermometer readings, and he has prepared a psychrometric chart from the values thus obtained. This work has placed the subject of psychrometry upon a correct scientific basis. I think it is proper that we should recognize the importance of his work and give him credit for one of the most interesting and valuable researches that have been published in recent years. Blast-furnace men are not ready to use, as he suggests14 a value expressed in grains of water accompanying a pound of dry air. However convenient this may be for heating and ventilating work and other engineering problems, there are several reasons for preferring the use of a value expressed in grains of water in a cubic foot of mixed air and water vapor, in connection with combustion phenomena and the effects of moisture on blast-furnace operation. Low-temPeRatUre carbonization needs no introduction to the literature on coal. This paper will attempt no review of that literature; it tells the story of the commercial development of one of the processes for carbonizing coal at so-called low temperatures, dealing with the technology and economics of the process rather than with the design of equipment. The process used is that covered by the patents of C. B. Wisner, with improvements and changes made by the Pittsburgh Coal Carbonization Co. The important and novel feature of the process is the phenomenon of making the product in ball form (Fig. 1). Melting coal dust into smokeless solid fuel in an apparatus as simple as a revolving cylinder of ordinary mild steel has been proved to be practical. Furthermore, it has been found that the process has a wide application, for by applying a knowledge of why and how this balling action is accomplished, the apparatus can be designed and adapted to treat any coal that has a certain minimum agglutinating property. The operating plant is 20 miles west of Pittsburgh, adjacent to the Champion preparation plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. The coal used is cleaned minus ?-in. or finer sizes. The products are low-tem-perature coke, tar and tar products. Present capacity is 7000 tons per month of low-temperature coke and 140,000 gal. of tar. There is no surplus gas for sale, and none of the light oils are stripped from the gas. The coke is marketed in two sizes, 1 to 2 in. and 1 to 6 in., through retail coal dealers for domestic consumption in hand-fired furnaces, and for fireplace fuel. The smaller size is bagged by dealers. Crude tar and many distillates and road tars are sold. It is now fourteen years since we German ironmasters, in considerable number, visited the United States on the occasion of the Philadelphia Exposition, and found the iron metallurgy of this country, as must be frankly confessed, in an advanced stage of development not previously suspected by us. At that time the United States already occupied, as now, the second rank, with Germany in the third, the product of pig-iron for that year being, in Great Britain, 6550, in this country, 2093, and in Germany, 1850 kilotons.* This relative position has not been changed. The present annual product of the three countries is, in round numbers, Great Britain, 8380, the United States, 7790, and Germany, 4530 kilotons. But the proportion of the United States, which was, in 1876, but 15 per cent. of the world&apos;s product, has now advanced to 30 per cent. When we left America in 1876, it was not only with gratitude for cordial hospitality and for the liberality with which our professional colleagues here had opened to our inspection whatever was worthy of notice in our special field, but also with the conviction that we had collected a great treasure of new and interesting information which we could utilize for the benefit of our German Fatherland. Particularly the achievements of the never-to-be-forgotten Holley in the field of Bessemer practice, set us an inspiring example for imitation in our own country. As an expression of our thanks in more practical fashion, I attempt in this paper to sketch what we have done in Germany since
