The big mass of anorthosite in the Lake Sanford district and the bodies of titaniferous magnetite that occur in a small area near the south margin of the mass have been described repeatedly, and the puzzling problems of the genesis of the rocks and ores have stimulated the deductive reasoning of geologists for a hundred years. Some of these men have taken a leading part in describing the anorthosite rock and forming hypotheses concerning its origin; some have contributed most to the study of the ore deposits; and some have made classical Studies introducing a basic approach to the problems of the anorthosite rock and genesis of the titaniferous magnetites. Much of the writing on the problems of rock and ore genesis has been based on physical-chemical reasoning rather than on field and microscope observations of the rocks and ores. Most of these geologists conclude that the anorthosite was formed by true magmatic crystallization, involving previous settling or squeezing out of ferromagnesian minerals from the parent magma. The associated gabbro is a separate segregation or later intrusion, and the lighter colored and finer grained facies of the anorthosite is either a chilled border zone of the anorthosite or the result of granulation by crushing of the coarse, dark blue rock of the main mass. This blue rock, called the Marcy type, is named after the highest peak in the range. The finer grained and lighter colored rock is called the Whiteface, after another mountain appropriately named for a cliff colored by this facies of the anorthosite.

A study was made of the development of texture and the anisotropy in plastic flow of Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V alloy. Based on Pole figure determinations, the shifting of texture induced by rolling at approximately 400°C was found to be due primarily to slip rotation for the major Portion of the material. Grain boundary shear is believed to be an important factor. The anisotropy of the textured alloy was examined in terms of the variations of yield stress under tension and the ratio of bi -axial strain increments µp, in the temperature range 25" to 290°C. The results were related to Hill&apos;s theory on plastic anisotropy. The Schmid factors of (1100)[1120], (1101)[1120/, and (1101)[1120] slip systems were analyzed and found to be compatible with the observed anisotropy. Cross-slip between these planes was proposed as a possible deformation mode. In a number of published articles, considerable interest has been directed to the possible achievement of texture hardening in hcp metals. Following Backofen, Hosford, and Burke,&apos; this phenomenon was related to the yield criteria of the material and was expressed in terms of the biaxial strain ratio, r = d?w/d?l. The higher the value of r, the greater is the expected potential for texture hardening under certain loading conditions. For a given material, r varies with direction. Such variation can be traced to the anisotropy in plastic flow and can be explained within the framework of the various modes of deformation. Hatch2 found that a high r value coincides with a texture whereby the (0001) pole is closely aligned with the surface normal for sheet materials, Based on the analysis of the slip on the {1010}, {1011}, and (0001) planes, Lee and Backofen3 and Avery, Hosford, and Backofen4 concluded that the resistance to thinning is reduced by the operation of the (0001) <1120> slip system; with this reasoning they were able to explain the low r values (i.e., r « 1) observed in magnesium alloy sheets in the rolling direction and in commercially pure titanium in the transverse direction. The general equation, dealing with plastic flow in a polycrystalline aggregate has been used to correlate the plastic anisotropy and texture. In this expression, T and s are shear and normal stresses, and dri and d? are shear and normal strain increments, respectively. Assuming that five slip systems are operative within each grain and applying the principle of maximum work,5,6 one can determine the m value among the available systems. On this basis, Hosford7 and Chin, Nesbitt, and Williams&apos; were able to correlate m with yield stress under plane-strain compression, and Svensson9 was able to predict the variation of yield stress in textured aluminum. These workers made their analyses from materials in which slip operation is known to be associated with plastic flow. Questions remain regarding the derivation of Hill&apos;s theory on plastic anisotropy,10,11 since it was formulated on von Mises&apos; yield criterion.&apos;&apos; Its ability to deal with other forms of deformation has been in doubt.13 Others have discussed the validity of Hill&apos;s quadratic equation relating strain and yield stress.14&apos;15 For hcp titanium, deformation by various modes of slip and twinning operations has been reported.16-20 If all possible modes of deformation operate and contribute substantially to the plastic flow, it is difficult to imagine how the quadratic expression can suitably describe the anisotropic plastic flow of titanium alloys. Backofen and Hosford15 considered that Hill&apos;s is a macroscopic theory and implied that the major mode of deformation by slip mechanism will adequately describe anisotropy of the material. In the present investigation, slip operation will be shown to play the major role in the development of sheet texture induced by rolling of a commercial titanium alloy. Although twinning and other modes of deformation may also operate, their operation is believed to be secondary. The anisotropic properties of the sheet, which can be expressed in terms of directional variation of r, µp = -d?w/d?l and the yield stress will be shown to be governed primarily by slip operation. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The titanium alloy chosen for the present investigation had a nominal composition of 8 wt pct Al, 1 wt pct Mo, 1 wt pct V, and 0.1 wt pct interstitial impurities. Sheets varying between 0.1 and 0.15 in. thickness were used. The alloy was received in a condition which was prepared by rolling at 900°C and annealing at 700°C. Subsequently, the sheets were subjected to further reduction in thickness by rolling at 400°C. A total reduction in thickness of 65 to 70 pct was obtained by a series of quick passes in a rolling mill with intermediate reheating. Further reduction in thickness was not possible due to cracking developed at the edges of the sheets. X-ray measurements were conducted in a Siemens and a Norelco unit to determine the texture of the sheets. Reflection techniques were used exclusively with CuK, radiation and a nickel filter. The loss of X-ray intensity due to geometric defocusing was calibrated with a technique described previously." The (0001), (1010), and (1071) pole figures were plotted from 0 to 80 deg, and to present the texture elements quantitatively, inverse pole figures were constructed following the technique described by Jetter, McHargue, and Williams.22 Tensile experiments were carried out at 25", 175",

Ashbel Welch, Lambertville, N. J.: Dr. Dudley has given the wear of steel rails under four different conditions. He arrives at the conclusion that the softer rails, or those that from their composition ought to be softer, wear better than the harder. But there is another condition which has an important bearing on the subject, and should not be overlooked,—the weight on a wheel. With the lighter weights of the past, the softer rails may have worn best; with the heavier weights of the future, the harder may wear best. Weights will probably be increased up to the capacity of steel to bear; then doubtless the harder steel will wear best. A leaden rail with ten pounds on a wheel might carry millions of tons, but with one hundred pounds on a wheel, it would be destfoyed by a few thousand tons. So in the days of iron rails, my experience was that the softer rails under light machinery stood better than some of the harder; but under heavy machinery the softer were much the most rapidly destroyed. From the measurement of internal-oxidation band widths in Ag-In and Cu-A1 alloys, products for the solubility No and the diffusivity Do of oxygen in silver and apparent NODo products in copper have been obtained over a range of temperature. The NODO products for silver are in agreement with the product of the individually determined No and Do values of Eichenauer and Müller. Although interstitial diffusion of oxygen in silver is expected, the temperature-independent factor Do of the diffusion coefficient does not agree well with the theory of Wert and Zener. For Cu-A1 alloys internal oxidation does not follow the expression derived for ideal kinetics, since the apparent NODo product calculated from internal-oxidation measurements is a function of the alloy content in the specimen. Thus, unequivocal values for No or DO or even the product NODO in copper are not available from the literature. RELIABLE values for the saturation solubility NO and diffusivity DO of oxygen in fcc metals are lacking and difficult to determine, partially because internal-friction measurements are not applicable. Permeability experiments and Sieverts7-type adsorption -desorption methods3 have met with difficulty; however, Eichenauer and Müller4 have recently reported on the solubility and diffusivity of oxygen in silver as determined by the latter technique . Rhines, Johnson, and Anderson,5 and independently Meijering and Druyvesteyn,&apos; introduced the possibility of deriving values for the product NODO in a metal from measurements of the widths of internal-oxidation zones (subscales) formed during the internal oxidation of alloys. In addition to these authors, several other investigators7-9 have made such measurements in various silver and copper alloys at various temperatures, mostly using me- chanically polished specimen surfaces. The purpose of this investigation was to determine over a range of temperature the calculated products NODO in silver and copper from systematic measurements of the widths of internally oxidized zones in Ag-In and Cu-A1 alloys, using specimens with electro-etched surfaces. Consider the internal oxidation of a dilute solid-solution alloy in which the base metal is not oxidized. If diffusion of oxygen is the rate-controlling step, then the depth 5 of the internal-oxidation zone is given by where y is a dimensionless parameter and t the oxidation time. Based on the solution of the diffusion equation, wagnerl0 has shown that under certain conditions several mathematical simplifications may be used in the evaluation of y, so that Eq. [I] may be expressed for the case that y « 1, and y(Do/DB) 1, where N(so)the is the equilibrium solubility (mole fraction) of oxygen in the solvent metal for the given oxidizing atmosphere, is the mole fraction of the solute metal in the bulk alloy, 4 is the diffusivity of the solute in the base metal, and v is the ratio of oxygen atoms to solute atoms in the precipitated oxide BO,. Rearranging Eq. [2] Maak&apos; has derived an expression analogous to Eq. [3] for the case that an external-oxide scale, in addition to an internal-oxidation zone, is formed. It should be remembered that the coefficient of expansion of concrete is nearly that of iron; therefore in constructing flues the design must take account of this important detail. The cracking of flues, mentioned by Mr. Havard as having occurred at a temperature of 100° C. and above, . were possibly caused by neglecting to appreciate the extent of the expansion and contraction of the concrete. Effect of Atmospheric Moisture.-The moisture present in the atmosphere is exceedingly injurious to flues of any material, and those made of concrete are no more susceptible than of brick. My experience with flues of the Monier construction, having walls from 1.5 to 2.5 in. thick plastered upon a net-work of iron rods, was unsatisfactory from the standpoint of dura¬bility.

MECHAMCAL, electrical, and other property measurements are often more easily made on wires than on sheets. In order to carry out transmission electron microscopy on the same material used for property determinations, we have developed a method for preparing thin foil specimens of wires. The technique was developed for 0.030 in. diam tungsten wires, and is a modification of the thinning techniques used by Wilsdorf, et al 1 A length of wire is first ground to about 0.010 in. thick by mounting the wire in low melting temperature wax, hand grinding a longitudinal flat, removing and reversing the wire in the mount, and then grinding a second parallel flat. The 0.030 in. wide and 0.010 in. thick strip is cut into 1/8 in. lengths to fit in the specimen holder of the electron microscope. Next the specimen is gripped in platinum-tipped tweezers (the anode) and placed 2 mm below a hol- low copper cathode with a 0.010 in. ID nozzle. Electrolyte, 10 pct NaOH, flows by gravity feed through the nozzle onto the specimen, as shown in Fig. l(a). Polishing is carried out until a shallow impression is made on one surface, and then the specimen is turned over and the opposite surface indented. The metal between the two impressions should be about half the specimen thickness, as is shown by the heavy line in the cross section in Fig. l(b). The entire specimen is then electropolishedin 2 pct NaOH until a hole appears at the location of the indentations. The apparatus is shown in Fig. 2, and is essentially the same as that used by Wilsdorf et al. at The Franklin Institute. Light is reflected by a mirror onto the bottom surface of the specimen! which is viewed by a stereoscopic microscope placed above it. Polishing is carried out until light is seen, indicating that a hole has formed, and then immediately stopped. The specimen is washed in water. alcohol, and ether, and is then ready for examination. The specimen should be reversed in its platinum clip during electropolishing to insure equal polishing on both sides of the impression. For tungsten, indenting at 120 v and 0.04 amp takes less than 1 min, and final polishing, at 10 v and 1 amp, less than 5 min. The portion of the specimen available for transmission microscopy surrounds the hole, as is seen by the dashed lines in Fig. l(b). Slight electroetch-ing accompanying electropolishing reveals the mi-crostructure, as seen in Fig. 3(a) by light microscopy. Low-magnification electron microscopy, as in Fig. 3(b), enables the same areas and grains to be viewed and identified when subsequently examined at high magnification. This paper presents a series of equations for mechanical ball wear, relating parameters of ball size, mill speed, and mill diameter. The fundamental equation, Eq. 12, presented here is introduced to correlate these basic parameters and thus define and clarify the concept of ball wear. This equation is offered as a general rule, which may be modified to apply to individual problems of grinding. BALL wear as observed in grinding installations is the combined result of mechanical wear and corrosion. Corrosion should be a linear function of the ball surface available. Ball corrosion, however, has been studied so little that its effect, although of great importance, cannot be included in the analyses given here. Accordingly, the wear of a single ball may be considered to be a homogeneous, linear function of its surface and of the distance traveled. In a mill running at a low speed, grinding is the result of rubbing action within the ball mass and between the ball mass and mill liners. When the speed of the mill is gradually increased toward the critical, the impacting effect of freely falling balls becomes increasingly prominent in comparison with the rubbing action. Reduction of ore takes place partly by rubbing, partly by impact. The share of the freely falling balls in the reduction of ore reaches its practical maximum at a speed somewhat less than the critical; at that speed grinding by rubbing has decreased to a low value. It may be reasonable to think that size reduction by freely falling balls should reach its theoretical maximum at the critical speed, if the fall of the balls were not hindered by the shell of the mill beyond the top point; grinding by rubbing would cease at the critical speed. As a first approximation, wear of freely falling balls may be considered to be a homogeneous, linear function of the force at which they strike pieces of rock and other balls at the toe of the ball charge. The force equals mass times acceleration. The mass of a ball is a function of d3 and its acceleration is a function of the peripheral speed of the mill. THE Institute of Metals held a well rounded out symposium on the working of metals, distributed over two sessions. At the first session* four papers were presented, two dealing with the, cold working of metals and alloys and two with the hot working of non-ferrous alloys. The first paper by E. V. Crane, dealt with "Metal Working in Power Presses." Mr. Crane pointed out the empirical nature of engineering data available for use in calculating the probable stresses developed and power requirements, for the shearing, drawing, binding and other forming operations. He described the various operations, methods of determining stresses developed and presented data obtained. In the discussion C. F. Hammond took exception to Mr. Crane&apos;s objections to the rather too frequent. annealing operations in drawing of cartridge cases, pointing out that the material was-manufactured to meet specified structure and physical requirements, which could only be met by carefully controlled sequences of working and intermediate annealing operations.

Development work in mines of St. Joseph Lead Co., Southeast Missouri, using trackless loading equipment shows definite advantages: Speed of cleaning, ability to work on steep grades and sharp crosscuts, good later tracking conditions, and possibility of wasting rock in old abandoned stopes. THE Desloge mine is one of a group of mines owned by the St. Joseph Lead Co., in the so-called Lead Belt of Southeast Missouri. It has been operating approximately 40 years producing a daily tonnage ranging from 1600 to 3800, depending on various factors. On an average, the present mine is 300 ft deep with an extreme extent of 2.7 miles by 1.7 miles. Most of the present mining is in the lower horizons of the Bonne Terre dolomite, a fairly soft rock requiring no support except occasional channel iron and roof pins. Due to the contour of the underlying sandstone and porphyry, some development work has been through short stretches of these different formations. In some areas the lower part of the dolomite is quite sandy and generally is considered abrasive. Sizes and Methods of Drifting Have Changed: Development work has, like other phases of mining, changed considerably in the last 20 years, from cleaning by hand to the use of a mechanical method. The conception of a standard drift has also changed. Before the advent of mechanical loading in stopes there were many pieces of main line drift averaging 7 ft high x 9 ft wide. Later developments have introduced spiral-welded pipe with victaulic couplings, millisecond exploders, bulky powder, and the use of electric cap lamps. Experimental work is going on continually in various phases of development work, some to be tried and discarded, others gradually to become standard practice. To sum up, the standard method of development now in use at Desloge is as follows: The work is done on a two-shift cycle 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Two men known as development drillers comprise a crew on each shift. These two men arrive at their work about 7:30 to find a round blasted by the previous shift. After scaling down back and walls they proceed to the cleaning operation, using either a Joy loader and shuttle car, a drag hoist mounted on a slide ramp, or an Eimco Finlay to load into a 21/2 ton mine car. Cleaning may take from 2 to 4 hr depending on conditions such as length of round broken, length of haul, and other variables. After fitting up pipe and setting up columns and drills they are ready to drill a round which should measure 9 ft high x 11 ft wide and break from 5 to 7 ft advance. The question of alternating current vs direct current has become an important consideration to the mining industry. Rising production costs demand lower investment, which, in many instances, can be realized by the use of ac mining machines. Generally ac motors, control systems, and distribution and power conversion equipment can be installed for approximately 50 pct of the first cost of their dc equivalents. This basic saving has made ac mining a serious competitor for the traditional dc mining systems. With the increased use of ac voltages underground, there has developed the problem of conveniently converting distribution voltages to usable 480-v power. Power at low voltages should not be carried for comparatively long distances, and the transformation should be made at the point of use. Otherwise, serious voltage regulation problems and objectionable line losses will occur.

IN analyzing the relation between the orientation of new grains and that of the deformed matrix of axially extended and recrystallized single crystals of face-centered cubic metals, a two-stage rotation process" is generally used where the first rotation is made in order to account for an "adjustment of orientation to the environment of strain."&apos; It has been argued that in spite of the difference of orientation, which may amount to as much as 12" (in a brass),&apos; between the octahedral plane as observed in the parent lattice and in the recrystallized grain, it is believed to be a common plane in the sense that it constituted the nucleus in the parent strained crystal from which the new grain grew.&apos; A possible source of the deviation in orientations of a common pole in the new grain and that of the deformed single crystal matrix from which it has grown may be found in the distribution of strain resulting from the plastic deformation. It might be expected in view of the incongruent nature of shear&apos; that the perfection of the octahedral plane along which glide has occurred is disrupted and that this disruption constitutes the strain from which nuclei of new grains can grow during recrystallization. Evidence for the existence of strain along glide planes was first detected by Taylor" in 1927 and substantiated by Collins and Mathewson&apos; in 1940. In their investigations, however, the deformed single crystalline specimens (aluminum) were cut mechanically along the glide planes followed by mechanical polishing. X-ray exposures (glancing angle) of only 8 min with filtered radiation were used. It was later shown&apos; that this type of surface preparation did not remove with all certainty the mechanically disturbed surface. It was felt that a re-investigation of this phenomenon using more refined techniques might reveal a more correct extent of the strain resulting from the deformation which might correlate the deviation of the common pole of the recrystallized grain with the acting slip plane of the matrix crystal. In accordance with these thoughts, a single crystal of a brass (70/30 nominal composition) M in. in diam x 5 in. long, tapered as in previous experiments,&apos; was extended and carefully documented with respect to elongation and shear. Disks about % in. thick paralle&apos;l to the primary slip planes were cut from the specimen by means of an etch cutter." These disks represented volumes of the specimen which had been extended 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 pct. Copper Ka monochromatic radiation was obtained by reflecting 35,000 v copper radiation from the c-cleavage face of a pentaerythritol crystal. The monochromatic radiation was collimated and led on to the disk set at the proper 0 angle for reflection from the primary (111) planes. The monochromatic beam was aligned in a plane containing the active slip direction. Following a 10 hr exposure at the theoretical Bragg angle, the disk was reset at 0 + 1°, 0 — 1", 0 + 2", 0 — 2", etc., until no Bragg reflection was obtained. The disk was then rotated 90" about its polar axis, and the same X-ray procedure was used. The results are shown in Table I. It may be seen from the results in Table I that the plastic deformation (20 pct elongation) produces fragments of the glide plane which are rotated or tilted as much as 25 " from the normal position on a purely block slip model. In addition to the large variation in 0 angle in the slip direction, there is a variation in 0 as much as 20" in the direction at right angles to the direction of slip, i.e., <110>. In view of the results shown, it may now be argued that the strain distribution finds its origin in the incongruent nature of the slip process.&apos; The use of the two-stage rotation process seems valid in attempting to explain the relation between the orientation of recrystallized grains and the matrix from which they have grown. Recent disclosures concerning strengthening of anisotropic sheet materials under biaxial stresses are reviewed. This biaxial strengthening has been termed "texture hardening" by Backofen and is related to the normal anisotropy parameter, R. Measurements of R made on three annealed titanium alloys indicate a Ti-4Al alloy will have the greatest potential for texture hardening, followed in order by Ti-5Al-2.5Sn and Ti-6Al-4V. Relative to sheet texture, a review of the deformation mechanisms in titanium alloys would indicate that a preferred orientation for "texture hardening" is where the (0001) pole is normal to the sheet plane. This was confirmed by determination oj (0001) pole figures for the above three alloys. High R values are related to pole figures with (0001) normal to the sheet plane, whereas low R values are related to pole figures with (0001) split in the transverse direction from the sheet normal. PUBLISHED work by Backofen et al. 1 and Hosford and Backofen2 based on hill&apos;s&apos; mathematical theory of yielding in anisotropic metals has indicated that significant strength advantages under biaxial stresses are possible in hcp alloys, provided an ideal (0001) [1010] sheet texture exists. This tendency to strengthen under biaxial stresses has been termed "texture hardening".1 It can be quantita- tively characterized by a strain-ratio parameter, R, where R may be determined from the ratio of natural width strain to natural thickness strain as measured on a uniaxial test specimen cut parallel to the rolling direction. If R is greater than 1.0, then strengthening under biaxial tension would be predicted. Considering the a titanium alloys which have an hcp crystal structure, Williams and Eppelsheimer4 have reported that commercial-purity grades deviate from the ideal (0001) sheet texture mainly in an approximate 30-deg rotation of the basal plane, toward the transverse sheet direction. However, McHargue et a1.5 have shown that the angle of rotation of the basal plane is sensitive to alloy content. In particular, a titanium alloy with 3.8 pct Al was reported to have the ideal (0001) [1010] texture after cold rolling. Additionally, Backofen et a1.1 using plane-strain compression tests have reported R values greater than 5.0 for the commercial 0 alloy Ti-5A1-2.Sn (110-AT). In view of these findings, a program was initiated to further determine the potential of commercial Ti-5A1-2.5Sn and an experimental Ti-4A1 alloy with respect to "texture hardening". Also, because of its wide commercial use, Ti-6A1-4V was included in the investigation. THE purpose of this investigation was to determine the equilibrium diagram of the lithium-magnesium pair as a first step in studying the possible usefulness of these alloys as ultra-light structural materials. REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE The behavior of lithium towards magnesium was first investigated by Masing and Tammann.(I)? In order to prevent oxidation the alloys were made in iron tubes under an atmosphere of hydrogen; temperatures were measured with a glass-protected thermocouple. These investigators found that lithium and magnesium form two series of solid solutions separated by a miscibility gap between 85 and 95 per cent magnesium; that the alloys with 81 and 95 per cent magnesium showed a homogeneous structure under microscopic examination, while the alloy with 89 per cent magnesium contained two distinguishable crystallites; that the curve indicating the beginning of crystallization rises from the melting point of lithium to that of magnesium; and that no compounds of lithium and magnesium are formed. The equilibrium diagram was not plotted because no definite data were obtained for determining the solidus and the posi-tion of the miscibility gap in the solid state. The difficulties encountered in this investigation were: (1) that it was necessary to heat them as high as the melting point of magnesium in order to obtain homogeneous melts; at such temperatures the alloys attacked the glass protecting the thermo-couple; and (2) that at temperatures above 400° C. the lithium united

A bentonite-clay drilling mud when treated with tetrasodium pyroarsenate underwent substantially the same reduction in viscosity and water loss as when treated with the complex phosphates. The complex arsenate showed a slightly higher reversion after heating; the other arsenates showed poor viscosity-reducing properties. Introduction During the past 10 years the chemical control of drilling mud has become of major importance in affecting the successful drilling and working over of wells. The desired properties of drilling mud have been well established, and in obtaining these characteristics there has developed a large market for viscosity-reducing chemicals. Viscosity reduction produced by humic acid, tannic acid, sodium silicate, sodium tannate, Calgon, and the complex phosphates has been described by Loomis, Ford, and Fidiam.l The effects Of treatment with complex phosphates and ammonium PolyPhosPhates on the rheological properties of muds were investigated by Fancher2 and the alkali vanadates have been described by Williams.3 Laboratory Investigations It is the purpose of this paper to point out the effects of arsenates in controlling the viscosity and gelling characteristics of a drilling mud. Viscosities and gel strengths were measured at room temperatures with a Stormer viscosimeter calibrated in centipoises and operated at 600 r.p.m. Water loss was determined at 80°F. with the Baroid low-pressure wall-building tester at a pressure of I00 lb. per sq. in. for 30 min. The hydrogen-ion concentration was measured with a glass electrode. The bentonite-clay suspensions were prepared in the laboratory and allowed to age several days before testing. Members of the Arsenic Group in the periodic Table include arsenic, antimony and bismuth, but this investigation was limited to arsenic. KINETICS of the reaction of zirconium with pure oxygen at elevated temperatures have been studied by several workers for periods of time up to 6 hr.1-1 In two cases,3-4 . the experimental values of oxygen uptake, w, as a function of time, t, were best fitted to the parabolic rate law w2 = kPt + constant. In others,3,4 the cubic rate law w3 = kot + constant, showed better agreement. The most recent data of Gulbransen and Andrew4 indicate that the choice between the parabolic and cubic laws for empirical representation of the data will often be arbitrary. This is particularly true if the first few minutes of the reaction with a clean zirconium surface is attributed to a different oxidation mechanism, for deviations from either rate law were found primarily during the initial period. Thus, the kinetics of this reaction have been too uncertain to permit safe extrapolation to oxidation periods of practical interest (many hundreds of hours). The data to be described are of interest, for they indicate that the cubic rate law applies over long oxidation times. The reaction of zirconium with oxygen at 1 atm pressure was followed at 350" and 450°C for 500 and 200 hr, respectively. Abraded test specimens of pure zirconium sheet&apos; 3.0 X 2.0 X 0.012 cm in size were oxidized by the procedure previously described,3 which included periodic cooling to room temperature for weighing. The surfaces were polished to a 4/0 finish using polishing paper wet with kerosene, then wiped with petroleum ether and washed in redistilled acetone. Fig. 1 shows plots of log ? vs log t. Each curve represents the average of duplicate measurements, and deviations from the average were generally less than 3 pet. The cubic rate law (slope = 1/3) is closely followed. The rate constants, 5.2, x 10 -6 and 2.4, X 10- (mg cm-2)3 per hr at 350" and 450 oC, respectively, are plotted as log k, vs 1/T in Fig. 2, together with cubic constants calculated from the data of Gulbransen and Andrew4 for abraded specimens from the same lot of zirconium. Their data refer to runs of 6-hr duration at a pressure of 0.1 atm 0 and under conditions of uninterrupted heating. In spite of these differences, the latter data yield a straight line which appears to apply equally well to the new extended time data. The energy of activation for the oxidation process, calculated from the slope of this line, i.s 38 keal per mole. This may be compared with the value of 47 keal per mole found by Belle and Mallett3 at higher temperatures. It may be concluded tentatively that extrapolation of short-term oxidation data for zirconium to obtain the long-term behavior is best done through the cubic equation ?3 = kpt + constant. ALTHOUGH there have been some developments during the last five years which have had far- reaching and important bearing on lead smelting, it cannot be said that any basic principles of pyrometal-lurgy have been discovered. Eighteen or twenty years ago the Dwight & Lloyd sintering machine was intro-duced and literally turned the roasting end of lead smelting upside down. There has been nothing com-parable to the advent of the sintering machine during recent years. Actual blast-furnace practice today is slightly, if any, better than it was five years ago ; although immeas-urably better than it was twenty to thirty years ago. Some tell us that as far as cleanness of slags is con-cerned, it is no better today than in the days of the old Romans. The metallurgist of a generation ago did very good work, considering the equipment he had available. It is true he was working with the cream of the ores, the clean oxides and carbonates and the low-zinc sul-fides. He was troubled very little with high zinc and selected his type of slag according to preference of -some authority such as Eilers, Iles, Raht, Hahn, etc. As these free-smelting ores were depleted the complex ores were encountered, and the metallurgist gradually discovered that he had to forget the old type slags and run a slag according to the percentage of zinc on the charge. I believe it is now universally agreed that SiO2 and CaO must be lowered and FeO raised in a slag as the ZnO increases. The ratio of these variations is practically uniform and can be relied upon over wide fluctuations of the determining element, zinc. These "bastard" slags, as they are sometimes inappropriately designated, are actually in daily use, and the metallurgist of today has been forced to adopt certain standards, as a guide to successful operation. These slags practically refute the old Eilers&apos; theory that all good slags are chemical combinations of SiO2 with FeO and MnO, and CaO and MgO. Eilers&apos; and the other type-slag theories were based upon the assumption that a good slag must con-form to a definite formula, such as 3 (FeO)2 SiO2 + 2 (CaO)2 SiO2 or 2 (FeO)2 SiO2 + 2 (CaO)2 SiO2 which respectively figure 31.3 and 36 per cent SiO2. The SiO2 was supposed to remain constant even with the entrance of impurities such as Zn and A1,0? into the slag. The increasing amount of impurities, espe-cially Zn, soon discredited the theory, for in actual practice the slag failed to run freely.
