MAGNESIUM alloys containing rare earth metals have received considerable attention during the past several years because of the need for light alloys having high strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures. Although much of the work reported earlier has dealt with alloys containing Mischmetal, it has been shown in two previous papersl, V hat distinctly different effects are produced by various rare earth metals and rare earth metal mixtures on the properties of magnesium. For example, much higher strengths are obtained in magnesium alloys containing didym-ium (essentially neodymium plus praseodymium) than in alloys made with Mischmetal, which contains all the rare earth metals in the proportions in which they occur naturally in the monazite ore. Mg-rare earth metal alloys are characterized by a relatively coarse grain size, which greatly impairs castability. The addition of zirconium as a second alloying ingredient has been shown8,7 to refine the grain size, which also produces a distinct improvement in the strength properties. Certain Mg-Mischmetal-Zr and Mg-Mischmetal-Zn-Zr alloy compositions which are currently being produced commercially have been discussed in dytail by Nelson and Strieter,8,4 who also present some in- formation on a Mg-low Ce-Mischmetal-Zr alloy, and by Nelson.8 A patent issued to Jessup, Emley, and Fisher9 emphasizes the superiority of Mg-didymium-Zn-Zr alloys over the corresponding alloys made with Mischmetal. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of an extensive investigation concerned with the effect of increasing amounts of zirconium on magnesium sand casting alloys containing several different rare earth metal mixtures in varying amounts. The effect of the addition of zinc to some of these alloys is also being reported. Preparation and Testing of Alloys The alloys studied in this investigation were prepared in small laboratory melts according to the melting procedures described by Nelson1" as the Crucible Method. Electrolytic magnesium having the composition shown in Table I was used as the starting material. The rare earth metal alloying ingredients used in preparing these alloys were essentially of the compositions listed in Table 11. Some of the didymium-containing alloys were prepared using a Mg-didymium hardener. The rare earth metal content of this hardener analyzed 1.2 pct Ce, 10.4 pct Pr, 80.8 pct Nd, and 7.6 pct La. The zirconium was added in one of three forms: 1) as sponge zirconium obtained from the Bureau of Mines; 2) as a fused salt consisting of 50 pct ZrCl, and 50 pct alkali chlorides from which the zirconium is reduced by the magnesium; or 3) as a Mg-Zr hardener. The equilibrium ratios CO/CO, of. a gas pharse coexislitrg with selected oxide phase assemblages of the system "FeO"-MnO-SiO2 and metallic iron have been determined at 1150°C. The data obtained are combined wilh the thermodynamic data on fayalite (Fe2SiOi) and "FeO"-MnO solid solutions to derive the actiuity-coiHpQsiUon relations for the various oxide components of the olivine (Fe2SiO4-,lIn2Si04) and pyroxenoid (standard free energies of formation of ferrosilile (FeSiO,), tephroite , and rhodonite from their oxides have been evaluated. In the Appendicc~s by Darken and Schivcerdtjeger the ideal solution law for solid deri oed. THE quaternary system Fe-Mn-Si-0 is of interest in many important phases of iron- and steelmaking. For instance, reduction in the blast furnace of ores containing Fe-Mn silicates, deoxidation of liquid steel with Mn-Si alloys, formation and subsequent alterations of oxide inclusions in steels, and the oxidation of manganese- and silicon-containing steels during processing are all governed largely by the thermodynamic relations existing in the system Fe-Mn-Si-O. Although the equilibria between liquid iron and Fe-Mn silicates have been studied in detail previously,' experimental data are lacking for equilibria among the solid phases. The present paper provides such data for a selected temperature, 1150°C. I) PREVIOUS WORK The general feature of subsolidus phase relations in the system iron oxide-manganese oxide-silica under strongly reducing conditions is known.' Fig. 1 represents an isothermal section at 1150°C. The phases present, in addition to silica, are three solid-solution series, viz.. the oxide solid-solution series "Fe0"-MnO (manganowiistite), the orthosilicate solid-solution series Fe2SiO4-Mn2SiO4 (olivine), and the metasilicate solid-solution series FeSi03-MnSi03 (pyroxenoid). The "FeO"-MnO solid solution is continuous between the two end members wustite and manganositeV3 as is the orthosilicate series between the two end members Fe2SiO4 and Mn2 SiO4. 4 The metasilicate solid solution, on the other hand, extends only part way from the MnSi0.l end member toward FeSiO because the latter end member is unstable relative to the phase assemblage fayalite + silica. The letters a through m in Fig. 1 identify end members of the individual solid phases dealt with [for instance, c designates fayalite (FeZSiO4) in equilibrium with wustite, e designates fayalite in equilibrium with silica, and so forth]. In addition to the phase relations there are some thermodynamic data available for the end members of the silicate solid solutions and for the "FeO" -MnO solid solution. The free energy of formation of fayalite (Fe2Si04) from its oxide components has been studied by several investigators. Unfortunately, the data obtained show considerable discrepancies. Copper smelters of various kinds have operated in the Morenci district since 1872, but all have been abandoned with the exception of the present Morenci Smelter of Phelps Dodge Corporation, which was completed in 1942. During the five-year period starting in 1937, the Morenci ore body was prepared for open pit mining, pilot mill test work was carried out, and a complete reduction works, of which the Smelter is a part, was designed and erected. Actual construction work on the Morenci Smelter was started in the fall of 1940, and warming up of the units began on April 1, 1942. Charging of the reverberatory furnaces commenced on April 18, 1942, and the first anode copper was produced on April 26, 1942. The smelter was originally designed to handle the production of the Morenci Concentrator on a 25,000 ton per day program, but by the time the smelter was in operation, plans were already underway to increase the smelter capacity to handle the production of the concentrator which was being enlarged to 45,000 tons a day capacity as a war-time necessity. This extension to the smelter was completed and the new units were put in operation toward the beginning of 1944. The original smelter consisted of a smelter crushing plant, bedding plant, two direct-smelting reverberatory furnaces with two waste-heat boilers on each furnace, three converters, an anode department, a stack, and all of the usual accessory smelting equipment. The extension consisted of increasing the bedding plant from three to five beds, the reverberatory department from two to four furnaces, and from four to eight waste-heat boilers, and the converter department from three to six converters. A third converter aisle crane was added and additions were made to the flue systems and conveyor systems throughout the smelter; but no change was made in the smelter crushing plant or the anode department, and the same stack was used for all additional Smelter units. A blister casting machine was installed at that time in the south end of the converter aisle to handle excess and emergency production above the capacity of the anode department and in 1947 a converter aisle skull breaker and a lime burning plant were added as the final units for a complete plant. The choice of direct smelting over calcine smelting for the Morenci Smelter was made after careful study by members of the Western organization of Phelps Dodge Corporation and after test runs on direct smelting of Morenci concentrate had been made at the Douglas Smelter of Phelps Dodge Corporation. The Morenci furnace charge is made up of comparatively high grade concentrate with no ores of smelting grade available and with only flux, a small amount of copper precipitate and the usual amount of smelter secondaries to be smelted with the concentrate. The simplicity of direct smelting for this charge and the large amount of waste-heat steam available from direct smelting operations were factors influencing the decision to adopt direct smelting for Morenci. The design of the Morenci Smelter and the type of units selected followed best experience at the Douglas Smelter of Phelps Dodge Corporation. A description of the original smelter before operations started was given in an article in the May 1942 issue of Mining and Metallurgy. The purpose of the present article is to describe the enlarged Morenci Smelter, with a discussion of metallurgy and operating practice and to show tabulations of operating and metallurgical results obtained. Because of beginning operations during the early years of World War 11, many problems caused by labor shortage were encountered, but no major difficulties developed in starting the new plant. However, because of labor shortage, full scale Smelter production was not reached until the fall of 1946. Fig 1 shows a general plan of the Morenci Reduction Works. The arrangement of the smelter equipment is shown in Fig 2, a sectional view of the smelter is shown in Fig 3, and the smelter flow sheet is shown in Fig 4. Metallurgy The metallurgy of direct smelting, being more or less fixed by the character of the charge, is not subject to the control available in calcine smelting. Slags may be modified by the addition of suitable fluxes, but the grade of the matte is determined almost entirely by the iron:copper ratio of the concentrate. The direct smelting operation involves distributing the wet concentrate along the sidewalls and in the bath of a reverberatory furnace by means of some suitable feeding device and raising the temperature of the charge so that first the moisture is driven off, then the first-atom sulphur is eliminated, and finally the sulphide portion of the charge melts and runs into the bath, carrying with it the non-sulphide portion which has been partially fluxed to form a suitable slag. The fusion of the non-sulphide portion is completed by contact with the irony converter slag which is regularly being poured into the reverberatory furnace. The smelting rate of the charge is influenced by the mineralogi-cal composition of the sulphide portion of the concentrate and by the composition and amount of the non-sulphide portion including the fluxes added. The copper in Morenci concentrate is chiefly in the form of chalcocite, intimately associated with pyrite, and non-sulphide content is very low so that

The aim of this paper is to disclose some of the correlations between rock parameters, hidden in Wuerker's "Annotated Tables of Strength and Elastic Properties of Rocks," 1956. The empirical relations concern dry rocks of varying porosity. Curves and equations interrelating the specific gravity, compressive strength, bar velocity, and Poisson's ratio are presented. In 1956 Wuerker published his "Annotated Tables of Strength and Elastic Properties of Rock", in which various physical properties of rocks determined by different authorities, are tabulated systematically. The tables are primarily intended for use by mining-, quarrying- and ore-dressing engineers. Since the list of measured parameters for each type of rock includes properties such as — grain size, specific gravity, porosity, compressive strength, static elastic cons:ants (moduli of elasticity, rigidity, specific damping capacity and longitudinal bar velocity) the tables are also of considerable interest to the practical geophysicist. Correlations between rock parameters may enable geophysicists, geologists and civil engineers to transiate measurements from one parameter to another. Even if these translations are of limited accuracy, or valid only within certain specified ranges, they often serve a useful parpose. The aim of this paper is to disclose some of the correlations between rock parameters concealed in wuerker's Tables. Throughout this paper the following symbols and units are used unless otherwise stated: Sg is Specific gravity, the ratio of the density of a specimen to the density of water at 4°C. P is Porosity, in %, the ratio of the volume of voids in a specimen to its total volume. CS is Compressive strength in 1000 p.s.i., the stress under which a specimen will fracture when undergoing a standard compression test. V is Bar Velocity in kilo-feet/sec, the velocity of longitudinal seismic waves measured in a slender bar type specimen. Vc is Bulk or Constraint Velocity in kilo-feet/ sec, the velocity of longitudinal seismic waves measured in a very large specimen.+is Reciprocai bar velocity in millisecs/ft (1 millisec = 10-3 sec). cis Poisson's ratio, the ratio of the lateral to longitudinal strain of a body under longitudinal stress. CORRELATIONS Specific Gravity (Sg) vs. Porosity (P) Figure 1 is a diagram illustrating the relatiooship between specific gravity and porosity for approuirr~ately 70 samples of dry rocks. In order to investigate the change in surface energy as a function of cold work ad environment, the contact angles between a liquid and the surface of elec-tropolislzed aluminum with various degrees of cold work were measured. Specinlens cut from aluminum rod (99.99 pct Al) were annealed at 600°C for 24 hr and then cold compressed parallel to the drawing di-rectzon of the rod in increments of approximately 10 pcl from 0 to 70 pct. The sections, taken transversely to the drawing direction, were mechanically and electro chemically polished. Contact angles between the sessile drop of distilled water, glycerin, and glycol and the specimen surface were measured optically. The differences in interfacial energy were calculated from the contact angle data. The effects of chemical washing and surface roughness of the specimen on the contact angle were also studied. The liquid contact angle was a linear function of the degree of cold working (D) ad changed markedly with differed liquids. THE plastic deformation of polycrystalline metals induces a preferred orientation in crystal structure. A preferred orientation changes the atomic density of a metal surface. This change in surface atomic density brings about the changes in surface interactions of the metals."' Also, the plastic deformation of metals raises the internal energy by increasing the stored energy.' Consequently, the total Helmholtz free energy of the metal increases and, in turn, the surface free energy of the metal. In order to study the effect of plastic deformation on solid surface phenomena, the liquid contact angle of a sessile drop made on cold compressed and elec-trochemically polished aluminum was measured. The preferred orientation in aluminum, due to uniaxial compression, is known to be [110] direction parallel to the compression axis. However, this description is only a first approximation of a rather complex orientation. In actuality, half the crystallites are more than 10 deg from this orientation, regardless of the amount of compression." For randomly oriented fcc crystals, the average surface atomic density can be calculated as follows: The number of atoms in a unit volume is 4/a3, where a is a lattice constant. The increase in the stored energy and the change in surface atomic density due to plastic deformation would certainly alter the surface tension of a metal. EXPERIMENT High purity aluminum rod of 6-mm diam (99.99 pct Al, obtained from Johnson, Matthey & Co., Ltd, London, England) was cut into sections approximately 1 cm long. The transverse cross section was mechanically polished. Then, the specimens were annealed in air at 600°C for 24 hr. Thus, eight annealed specimens were uniaxially compressed at room temperature from 0 to 70 pct of cold working with an increment of 10 pct. The extent of cold working was determined by the percentage of reduction in axial length to the original length. The specimens were further polished mechanically and, then, electrochemically with the Modern Battelle Type 1 electropolishing solution with a current density of 0.3 to 0.4 amp per sq cm and an electrode potential of 8 to 12 v at the solution temperature of 78" to 82°C for approxirr~ately 5 min. The sources of energy dissipation for concentrated loadings on rock are considered in an attempt to account for the experimentally measured magnitude of the work required to break out a unit volume of rock from the free surface of an essentially semi-infinite medium. It is concluded that most of this work probably represents the elastic strain energy developed by the loading in a much larger volume of rock beneath the loaded region than the volume of the rock fragment broken out to the side of the loaded region. This strain energy is largely dissipated in the form of stress waves generated by the high rate of unloading produced by the propagating cracks. The energies associated with the formation of the new surfaces of the cracks and with the stress waves generated directly by the loading process are computed to be negligibly small. Possibilities for improving the utilization of energy to drill rod. subject to the geometrical limitations imposed by down-hole operation, are discussed. It is pointed out that any such possible improvements would probably have to be differential ones, since each rock configuration of more favorabIe loading geometry that can be created down the hole is accompanied by a complementary configuration of less favorable loading geometry. INTRODUCTION Dislodging each cubic inch of rock from the bottom of the hole by the action of a bit requires the expenditure of an amount of energy that varies from approximately 5,000 in.-lb to approximately 100,000 in.-lb, depending on the hardness of the rock, or, more technically, upon its fragmentation strength.1 In this paper we will discuss (I) why the energy expended in drilling is so large, (2) what happens to this energy upon completion of the drilling process, and (3) what are the possibilities for reducing the magnitude of the energy required to drill rock. DETERMINATION OF ROCK DRILLING ENERGY The volume of rock removed per unit time from the bottom of a hole of diameter D is evidently (7/4)D2R, where R is the rate of penetration of the bit. If P is the rate at which work is done by the bit on the rock at the bottom of the hole, the energy required to break out a unit volume of rock is given by: Ev =(4/p) P/D2R............(i) For rotary drilling, of either the rolling-cone or drag-bit varicty, P = 2pLN, where L is the torque resistance to rotation at the bottom of the hole and N is the rate of rotation of the bit. L is essentially the same as the torque measured at the rotary table only when drilling in shallow holes. The energies expended in rotating the drill string against the frictional resistance of the walls of the hole and and against the viscous drag of the drilling fluid are extraneous to the subject under consideration, although these may be much greater in magnitude than E, when drilling in a deep hole. For percussion drilling, P = fE where f is the percussion frequency and E is the work done on the rock per impact. The latter quantity can be both computed and measured for a percussion drilling machine. 2 (Under satisfactory drilling conditions, defined in terms of ranges of numerical values of certain dimensionless parameters, E is only 30 to 50 per cent less than the impact energy of the striker.2) Alternatively, E, may be measured directly by dropping chisels shaped like bit edges, backed by rigid weights, onto the surfaces of laboratory rock samples of effectively semi-infinite extent. Under these circumstances, essentially all of the impact energy is converted to work done on the rock, and the relationships among volume of rock broken out, chisel shape, impact energy and indexing distances can be obtained.3 The values of the energy required to break out a unit volume of rock under favorable circumstances are substantially in agreement for rotary drilling, percussion drilling and drop testing at atmospheric pressure. The energy per unit volume is a quantity of the order of magnitude of roughly twice the com-pressive strength of the rock as measured by a uniaxial loading test. The phrase "order of magnitude" in this paper means from about 1/3 as much to 3 times as much; i.e., the energy per unit volume may range from roughly the same up to several times

The photoluminescence of Pr, Nd, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb in CdS, and Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb in ZnSe has been observed from crystals Prepared by diffusion using rare earth metals and an excess chalcogen pressure. For a given temperature, time, and chalcogen pressure the spectral characteristics were very reproducible from run to run, and the emission intensity for Nd, Er, and Yb in CdS was as high or higher than the best vapor phase doped crystals we have grown. For a few rare earths it was found that certain conditions of diffusion tend to yield optimum rare earth emission intensity with respect to the background lattice emission. Photoluminescence measwements of Yb in CdS as a function of depth gave a profile which was neither a Gaussian nor complementary error function. Part of the profile appears to arise from a fast component of the diffusion and the other part from a slow diffusing component. At 960°C and 33 atm S pressure, a com -plimentary error function approximation of the slow diffusing component gave a diffusion coefficient of D = 1.3 x 10-9 sq cm per sec. MOST of the studies of emission from rare earth ions in II-VI compounds have been reported on crystals doped during growth,1,2 although Kingsley and Aven prepared ZnSe:Er by diffusion for paramagnetic resonance and fluorescence studies. Pappalardo and Dietz prepared CdS:Yb by diffusion, but they made optical absorption measurements., We know of no study on the properties of rare earth diffusion in the II-VI compounds. To date we have diffused Pr, Nd, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb into CdS, and Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb into ZnSe and observed the rare earth emission spectra. For a given temperature and chalcogen pressure, the emission characteristics are very reproducible from run to run and for Yb, Nd, and Er in CdS, as good as the best crystals we had prepared by doping during vapor phase growth.2 The emission of Pr, Ho, and Tm has been observed in CdS prepared by diffusion for the first time. Previous attempts2 to prepare these later three materials by vapor phase growth were unsuccessful. The problem of obtaining reproducible characteristics in II-VI semiconductor compound work is well known.5 Not only is it difficult to reproduce results from one laboratory to another but it is sometimes difficult to reproduce results from one growth run to another under ostensibly identical conditions within one laboratory. This situation has been particularly bothersome in research on the luminescence of rare earth activated ZnS1 and Cds2. Crystals from one vapor phase growth run would show very strong rare earth line emission while crystals from a nearly identical run would show no rare earth emission. It was also observed on occasion that the intensity of the rare earth emission was not constant over the entire volume of a single crystal. MATERIAL PREPARATION AND INSTRUMENTATION Vapor phase grown boules of CdS were supplied by Dow Corning. This material was characterized by a free electron concentration of n - 3.5 x 1015 cm-3 and Hall mobility of 350 sq cm per v sec at room temperature. There were microscopic voids and decorated precipitates in some samples. The precipitates annealed out at diffusion temperatures but the voids remained. Single crystal rectangular samples of mm dimensions were sawed from the boules. The ZnSe was polycrystalline, UHP grade from Eagle-Picher. Poly-crystalline samples were sawed from the ingots. The samples were lapped, polished on one side, etched in a solution of 0.5 M K2Cr2O7 in 16 N H2SO4, and thoroughly washed in distilled water. A sample, excess sulfur (or selenium), and 5 mg of rare earth metal (turnings) were sealed in a 3.6 cm3 quartz ampoule at about 2 X 10-5 torr. The high chalcogen pressure used (1 to 30 atm) prevented thermal etching of the crystals and affected the diffusivity and solubility of the rare earth ions in the crystal lattice. For meaningful or reproducible results, it is thus necessary to specify the vapor pressure at which the diffusion was carried out. It is assumed that a negligible amount of the chalcogen was used in the formation of rare earth sulfides or selenides Our sulfur vapor pressure calculations are based on data assuming S2, S6, and S, molecules only in which case the equilibrium constants are given by6 where the pressures are expressed in torr. Selenium vapor consists of a mixture of Se2, Se4, Se6, and Se6 molecules. The selenium vapor pressure was calculated using equilibrium constants given by The status of the rare earth source during diffusion is unknown, i.e., the partial pressures of the rare earth metal and of the rare earth chalcogenides has not been determined. All emission spectra were recorded at 77°K on a Perkin-Elmer model 98-G spectrometer using a 640 line per mm grating. No correction was made for the spectrometer and detector spectral sensitivity. The fabrication of p-n junctions in GaAsl-,P, alloys by a vapor-phase gowth technique has for the first tirne resulted in room-temperature injection lasers capable of operating over a broad range of wavelengths extending into the visible region of the spectrum. The shortest wavelength achieved to date is 6750A at room tetnperature. In addition, at 78°K the threshold current density values for these lasers are generally the lo~vest reported, and the emitted radiation extends to the lozc,est wavelength ever attained (6350A). With lasers fabricated from material containing 14 pct Gap, quanticm efficiencies of 26 pct and peak power outputs of 25 zu were obtained at room temperature. ALTHOUGH room-temperature operation of GaAs injection lasers has been well-documented,&apos;-5 the operation of GaAsl-,P, (x > 0) laser diodes has been restricted to relatively low temperatures.8-&apos;0 This has been previously attributed5, 7, 10-12 partially to the difficulty of preparing single-crystalline GaAsl-& alloys having a high degree of chemical homogeneity and purity. Also, with these materials it has been difficult to prepare high-quality, abrupt p-12 junctions by diffusion techniques; and, in turn, this has made it difficult to obtain optimum electrical properties for room-temperature operationL3 in the resulting laser diodes. As a result, GaAsl-,P, laser diodes have not been efficient enough to permit operation at room temperature. For example, using diffused structures, only a few diodes were obtained which could be operated even close to room temperature (255K)." Recently, a vapor-phase growth method of preparing epitaxial deposits of GaAsl - .P, alloys has been described,14 and the high-purity and homogeneity of these materials has been previously demonstrated. Of special significance, with this technique, n- or p -type doping can be initiated or discontinued at any time and at almost any rate during the crystal growth so that the donor and the acceptor concentrations can be easily controlled to obtain desired impurity profiles. This permits high-quality, abrupt p-TZ junctions to be vapor-phase grown entirely during the crystal growth process, so that diffusion or other p-n junction fabrication processes are unnecessary. After growth, the device does not have to be heated to elevated temperatures, which avoids the possible unwanted introduction and motion of both impurities and lattice defects. Using the vapor-phase growth method cited above, over 300 room-temperature injection lasers have been prepared from GaAsl-,P, alloys having compositions in the range of 0 5 x 5 0.41. These lasers have emitted cohe~ent radiation in the spectral range of 8350 to 6350A at 78°K or from 9000 to 6750A at room temperature. The threshold current densities of the best lasers are independent of the alloy composition over the range 0 < x < 0.2 and compare favorably with values for good GaAs lasers.&apos; MATERIAL PREPARATION Multilayer, epitaxial deposits of GaAsl-,P, alloys are prepared by a vapor-growth technique described elsewhere.14 With this technique, the individual layers which comprise the multilayer structure are prepared sequentially in the deposition apparatus without interrupting the crystal growth. The epitaxial layers are deposited on GaAs substrate surfaces oriented normal to the ( 100) direction. The substrate wafers employed in this study were usually doped with tellurium to an electron concentration of approximately 2 x 10" per cu cm. To avoid strains, the first 10 to 15 p of the deposited material is uniformly graded from pure GaAs to the specific GaAsl- ,P, alloy composition of interest. The GaAsl - ,P, alloy growth is then continued to form a layer of constant composition having a thickness in the range of 25 to 75 p. Both the graded region and the layer of constant composition are doped with selenium to an electron concentration of about 2 x 10" per cu cm. The p region of the diode is then incorporated in the crystal by abruptly changing the dopant concentrations in the vapor phase to facilitate doping with zinc. This layer has a hole concentration of approximately 3 X 1019 per cu cm and typically is 50 p thick. DEVICE FABRICATION In general, the GaAs substrate and the region of graded composition are removed. Ohmic contacts are made to the n-type side by tin evaporation and to the p-type side by an electrodeless nickel deposition. This is followed by an electrodeless deposition of gold on both sides. The crystal wafer is then cleaved along (110) planes and sawed into rectangular parallelepipeds. Typical dimensions are 100 by 300 for the junction area and 100 µ for the diode height. The diodes are either soldered to a copper stud or pressure-mounted in a copper clip. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Approximately 400 laser diodes having compositions in the range of 0.41 have been prepared by the method described above. Each laser was routinely tested at liquid-nitrogen temperature. The lasers were operated with l-psec current pulses at a repetition rate of 60 pulses per sec. The parameters of greatest practical interest are the photon energy or wavelength of the laser output and the threshold current density. Fig. 1 shows the variation of photon energy with alloy composition at 78°K. The composition was determined from the lattice constant of the material obtained by X-ray back-reflection measurements. Solid-state electrochemical measurements by three alternative experimental procedures were made with the cell FeO, Fe3O4 |Zro.85Cao.15O1.85 |Cu| Zr0.85CaO.15O1.85 | FeO, Fe304 to establish the solubility and diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper in the temperature range 800" to 1030°C. The solubility of oxygen in solid copper and the diflusivity of oxygen in solid copper Dgu = 1.7 X 10-2 exp(-16,000/RT) Cm2/sec were determined and confirmed in alternative experiments. The enthalpy of solution of oxygen in solid copper equals —10,000 cal per mole; the partial excess entropy of the oxygen atoms in the Cu-O dilute solution is approximately the same as that found for interstitial atoms in other metals. The diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper is consistent with that expected for an interstitial atom. RELIABLE values for the saturation solubility N(s) and diffusivity DO of oxygen in solid copper have not been unambiguously established in the literature. Following three early determinations by others,1"3 Rhines and Mathewson4 reported that the solubility of oxygen in solid copper increased from 0.007 at. pct 0 at 600°C to about 0.015 pct at 1050°C. Phillips and skinner,, using essentiially the same analytical procedure, reported that the solid solubility increases from 0.0018 at. pct 0 at 550°C to about 0.0075 pct at 1050OC. The only previous value for the diffusivity of oxygen in solid copper was reported by Ransley.6 Ransley deoxidized Cu-Cu2O alloys in an atmosphere of carbon monoxide gas to yield a solubility-diffusivity product. He used the solubility data of Rhines and Mathewson to calculate the diffusivity values. Another method for obtaining the solubility-diffusivity product (N(s) DO) is by measuring the widths of internal-oxidation zones in copper alloys as reported by Verfurth and Rapp.7 However, the calculated N(S)Do products depend upon the alloy content of the specimen, so that the internal oxidation of copper alloys does not follow ideal internal oxidation kinetics. As a result, unequivocal values for the N(s) DO product were not obtained by this procedure. A solid-state coulometric titration technique similar to that employed in this work was introduced by C. Wagner8 to study the dependence on silver activity of the Ag/S ratio in silver sulfide in the temperature range of 160" to 300°C. Similar experiments have been carried out by C. Wagner and co-workers9-11 to study the stoichiometry range of silver and copper tellurides, cuprous sulfide, and cuprous selenide. Numerous authors have carried out electrochemical measurements with a solid oxygen-ion-conducting electrolyte to determine the solubility and/or diffusivity of dissolved oxygen in several liquid metals.12-l6 Rickert and Steiner17,18 have used solid-state electrochemical measurements to determine the diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver from 760" to 900°C. Two different cell geometries were used. In the cell of linear geometry Fe, FeO | ZrO2 + (CaO) | Ag + [0 (dissolved)] [1] oxygen diffused from the interior of the silver electrode to the silver/electrolyte interface where the oxygen activity had been lowered from a fixed initial value to practically zero by the application of voltage to the cell. The diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver was determined from the solution of the diffusion equation and the time dependence of the cell current. However, this determination of the diffusion coefficient depended upon a knowledge of the solubility of oxygen in solid silver. A cylindrical geometry was used for the cell Pt, O2(Po2 = 0.21 atm) | ZrO2 + (CaO) | Ag + [0 (dissolved)] [II] which also allowed the diffusivity of oxygen in solid silver to be determined. These values were in agreement with other available data.l9 Recently, Raleigh20,21 used a method involving the measurement of diffusion-limited currents in a cell involving the AgBr solid electrolyte to determine the diffusion coefficient of silver in Ag-Au alloys at 400°C. Diffusivity values on the order of l0-14 sq cm per sec were measured in the alloy composition range 10 to 60 at. pct Ag in a single experiment. From numerous electrical conductivity and galvanic cell measurements,9&apos;22"26 the solid solution Zr0.85 Ca0.15 O1.85 has been established as an electrolyte with predominant oxygen ion conduction over a wide range of intermediate and high oxygen activities. For interrelating the thermodynamics and the kinetics of the dissolution of oxygen in solid copper in this investigation, a galvanic cell was constructed with FeO-Fe3O4 as the reversible reference electrode, the Zr0.85Ca0.15 O1.85 electrolyte, and a pure copper specimen under-saturated in oxygen as the other electrode. The yield and fracture characteristics of a Ti-8 pct A1 alloy have been examined at room temperature as a function of exposure temperatures to 1700°F. Em-brittlenzent of the alloy is observed to occur following exposures below 1280°F, the critical temperature for formation of ordered Ti3Al particles. Presence of Ti3Al particles results in an increase in the yield and flout stresses which, for a given exposure time, are a maximum at the critical temperature. Embrittlement is attributed to the occurrence of plastically induced fracture controlled by the increase inflow stress. This interpretation is compatible with the decreasing ductility and increasing crack popagation rates observed with increasing exposure time below the critical temperature. Slip line observations and measurements of the gain size dependence of the yield stress indicate that the slip character of the alloy is not influenced by exposure treatments below the critical temperature. ThE potential usefulness of Ti-A1 alloys in structural applications has prompted considerable interest in studies of their microstructure and mechanical characteristics. The relatively recent surge of interest in the system and at the same time its complexities are indicated by the fact that despite numerous recent efforts14 there has not even been general agreement upon a phase diagram for the system. However, most of the Ti-A1 alloys of commercial interest range in aluminum content from 5.0 to 8.5 wt pct where most investigators achowledge the existence of the ordered Ti41 phase. Goldak and parrs confirmed the existence of Ti41 from X-ray diffraction analysis of the stoichiometric composition while Blackburn6 has determined its presence in commercial Ti-8 pct A1 alloys by electron diffraction analysis and dark field transmission microscopy. The embrittlement of Ti-8 pct A1 alloys was initially reported by Crossley and carew7 who showed that aging in the temperature range of 750" to 1110°F resulted in extreme brittleness. This behavior was later confirmed and correlated by Soltiss to the presence of long-range order in the commercial Ti-8 pct Al-1 pct Mo-1 pct V alloy (Ti-8-1-1) which exhibited anomalous creep and yield strength behavior at 950°F. This investigation was designed to study the mechanical characteristics of a binary Ti-8 pct A1 alloy in order to further examine the nature of the embrittlement behavior reported for the alloy system. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A Ti-8 pct A1 binary alloy was obtained from the Wah Chang Co. in the form of 0.050 in. sheet. The chemical composition of the alloy is given in Table I. Heat-treatment of the alloy was conducted in evacuated vycor capsules for the tensile sDecimens (1.25 bv 0.25 in. gage section) and in evacuated stainless steel jackets for the crack growth-rate panels. All specimens were annealed at 1700°F for 24 hr and water quenched before an exposure at elevated temperatures. Tensile testing was conducted at room temperature in an Instron testing machine equipped with a pushbutton control for instantaneous control of the cross-head motion. In this manner the change in stress, Aa, accompanying an increase in strain-rate by a factor of 10 was measured immediately after yielding. The crack growth-rate panels used were 3 by 18 in. with a precrack 0.33 in. long cut into the center of the panel. The panels were cycled at a maximum gross stress of 40,000 psi at a maximum to minimum tension stress ratio of 20. Cycling of the specimens was continued until the crack propagated the width of the panels. The crack length was intermittently measured during slow crack growth. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Correlation of Embrittlement to the Critical Temperature for Ordering. Blackburn6 has found that the critical temperature, T,, for the formation of Ti41 in a Ti-8 pct A1 alloy with an interstitial content on the order of that given in Table I is approximately 1245°F. The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to Mining and Metallurgy and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes, It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense. J. V. W. Reynders is chairman of the Endowment Committee. Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund THE Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund, consisting of $100,000, was given the Institute in 1929 by the family of Colonel Mudd who had served the Institute as Director, Vice-president and on many important committees. His long career of distinguished professional and public service is fittingly commemorated by this fund. The income is available for support of research and other special purposes. In view of Colonel Mudd&apos;s life work with the nonferrous metals and his keen interest in the younger men of the profession it is purposed to apply the fund particularly to the benefit of these two. Control of income is exercised by the Board of Directors on recommendation of a Committee consisting of the President and Secretary, ex officiis, together with three others selected by the Board. The Committee consists at present of the following members: W. H. Bassett, President; H. Foster Bain, Secretary; Harvey S. Mudd serving until October, 1931; Edgar Rickard serving till October, 1932; George Otis Smith serving until October, 1933. On recommendation of this Committee the Board has authorized as a first project the preparation of a series of small books designed especially to be helpful to the Junior Members. These are now being written and it is hoped will be available for distribution in 1931. The list includes: A Brief History of American Mining, by T. A. Rickard; Mining Costs, Why and What, by Arthur Notman; Introduction to Mineral Economics, by H. Foster Bain and T. T. In the operation of a water-driven reservoir, a free gas saturation can he established by maintaining production rates fast enough to cause the reservoir pressure to decline below the bubble point. The benefit of such a procedure on the displacement efficiency of the oil by water is illustrated for two types of sandstone samples from one reservoir. Those rock samples showing the poorest recovery to water drive in the absence of a free gas saturation give the most improvement in the presence of a free gas saturation. Employing one type of reservoir fluid (low .shrinkage) the benefit of evolved gas on oil displacement is calculated at several reservoir pressures below the bubble point. This demonstrates the presence of air optimum pressure for water displace,rnent which is .several hundred pounds per .square inch below the bubble point. Displacement of oil at the optimum pressures results in the removal of 7 to I? per cent more oil than would be obtained by displacement at the bubble point pressure. In some instance. this magnitude of increase may be worthy of consideration in establishing the maximum efficient rate of production from many water-driven fields. INTRODUCTION For many years the belief that the use of gas could be combined with that of water to result in a better recovery operation than the use of either of these phases alone has been prevalent in the oil industry. This is evidenced by the several field trials which have employed the injection of gas and water in combination.1.2.v In most cases the small amount of any additional recovery, in combination with the limited knowledge available on the older reservoirs, has left uncertain the influence of gas on recovery in these earlier attempts to combine the use of gas with water. Research studies in recent years have demonstrated through laboratory. floods the magnitude of the benefit of the presence of gas on the displacement of oil from sandstones by water.5,6,7,8,9,10,11 In addition, studies of the distributions of the phases which are present during the displacement process have developed concepts concerning the mechanism by which this benefit is obtained."." It now remains for the engineer to incorporate these findings into the general technology of reservoir operations. It is the purpose of this paper to illustrate that the production of a water-driven reservoir at pressures below the bubble point is one such operation whereby improved oil displacement efficiency can be obtained as a result of gas evolution. The establishment of a gas saturation by evolution of dissolved gas was one of the techniques used by several investigators in the laboratory studies. The possibility of obtaining the benefit of gas evolution in water-driven reservoirs by producing at pressures less than the bubble point has 3150 been pointed out previously." Silver-copper-lead deposits In Precambrian, Permian, and Cretaceous red-bed sequences near Van Horn, Texas, have the following features In common: (1) mineralization controlled by steeply dipping fractures in sandstones, (2) lack of ore in overlying and interbedded limestones, (3) absence of igneous intrusions, (4) sulflide ores without typical hydrothermal gangue minerals, and (5) associated arsenic, molybdenum, zinc, and cadmium but not gold. Ore was probably deposited along fractures by reaction between low-temperature, oxidizing, metal-rich ground waters and sulfide-bearing waters or rocks. Detailed mapping and studies of fracture patterns indicate that mineralization occurred during Basin and Range extensional deformation, thereby postdating major Trans-Pecos igneous activity.

Oil burners, oil furnaces, and methods of installation, have been the subject of many articles, but information concerning oil-burning systems, based upon scientific principles, is still in great demand, especially in the manufacturing districts of our country. Fuel oil, as it is termed (this being the residuum from oil refineries), has for many years been of great service to our manufacturers, and has justified its popularity not only by producing a superior manufactured product, but by turning out approximately 50 per cent. more product than can be made with coa1 fuel under like conditions. To install a system requiring only an oil-storage tank, a small pump, and an oil-supply main with numerous laterals leading to the various burners, furnaces, boilers, etc., is a comparatively simple matter; and, because fuel oil is very volatile, it is not necessary to heat it, even during the winter months in a very cold climate. Furthermore, only a small amount of power is required to atomize fuel oil, this often being done by a positive pressure blower, or by a mechanical burner. An analysis of fuel oil, together with that of various other liquid fuels, is given in Table I.
