The miscibility gap in the Au-Ni system has been determined by Mossbauer spectroscopy, with used as a probe. The phase boundaries were determined from the compositional dependence of both the isomer shift and Curie temperature. X-ray diffraction measurements were also used to confirm the Mossbauer results. 1 HE purpose of this research is to demonstrate the application of Mbssbauer spectroscopy to the determination of phase boundaries and to redetermine the miscibility gap by an independent and novel technique. The techniques evolved in this study are readily applicable to other polyphase systems and are generally as quick and accurate as the more conventional methods, e.g., metallography, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and so forth. To be sure, not all polyphase systems will lend themselves favorably to Mijssbauer investigations, but this is a problem met in the use of conventional methods as well. The Mbssbauer spectrum responds to a different set of physical parameters, and consequently provides an entirely independent method of analysis. It is especially useful if the system has either a ferromagnetic or an antiferromagnetic transition. The Au-Ni system was selected because alloys containing more than -60 at. pct Ni become magnetically ordered at low temperatures; also the miscibility gap is quite well established (see Ref. 7 for a compilation of pertinent references, also Fig. 11, and thus provides a reliable test of this novel procedure. As Fe is the most commonly used Mijssbauer isotope, there exists a wealth of information concerning its behavior in iron-containing alloys and compounds. However, as yet there have been relatively few experiments using it as a probe to investigate nonferrous systems. By choosing a nonferrous alloy system, we are able to demonstrate that its use is not restricted to systems containing iron as one of the major constituents. Wertheim and ~ernick' have used the same method to investigate Cu-Ni, and demonstrated that one can obtain a systematic variation in the isomer shift and magnetic hyperfine field. However, we believe this to be the first time these techniques have been used to establish phase boundaries. Two hyperfine interactions were measured and used to determine the phase boundaries, viz., the magnetic hyperfine splitting and the isomer shift which in this alloy system are both strong functions of composition. Calibration curves were established based upon single-phase solid solutions obtained by quenching from temperatures well above the maximum of the miscibility gap, see Fig. 1. Solid solutions containing 25, 50, 65, 75, 85, 92, and 96 pct Ni as well as pure nickel were used in the calibration procedure. Fig. 2 shows the Curie temperature, TC, and the isomer shift, v,, as determined from the Mbssbauer spectra, and variation in lattice parameter as determined by X-ray diffraction, as functions of composition. The compositions of the two-phase systems quenched from temperatures within the miscibility gap are obtained by comparing their respective values of TC and v0 with the calibration data. I) EXPERIMENTAL Mbssbauer sources were made by fusing the component metals in a tungsten arc melter, which has a water-cooled copper hearth. THE following report covers the history of the development of the mine, present equipment, methods and costs of mining and milling. In addition, a description of the ore deposit is given with emphasis on the origin of the fractures, mode and types of ore occurrence, and mechanics of granite emplacement. An endeavor has been made to present a complete and accurate statement of the San Mauricio mine, the highest grade gold mine in the Philippine Islands. Credit is gratefully acknowledged to the mine staff for descriptions and details regarding their particular field of work. All analyses were made by Mr. T. A. DeVore, head chemist, San Mauricio Mining Co. Messrs. Edward Wisser, J. E. Fyfe, A. F. Skerl and W. B. Gravity drainage is the self-propulsion of oil downward in the reservoir rock. Under favorable natural and operational conditions, it has been found to effect recoveries comparable to water displacement. With modern technical knowledge, the operator can often make a choice between dissolved gas drive, water drive and gravity drainage as the principal recovery agent in a reservoir. It is desirable that the opeator be able to determine which of the three agents will be most effective under each set of conditions. So far, gravity drainage has received less consideration than the other two. In this paper. an endeavor is made to set forth some of the principles of gravity drainage, to point out the types of reservoirs favorable for it, and to show how it may be applied in them. Field examples are described and discussed. Introduction Since early in the history of the oil industry, it has been recognized that gravity is one of the three important natural forces for expelling oil from the reservoir rock. As knowledge of the technology of oil recovery progressed, ideas changed with respect to the relative importance of the three forces and with respect to the manners in which they functioned. For a time, disproportionate emphasis was placed on the importance and function of gas and the need for conserving gas pressures. More recently, disproportionate emphasis has been placed on encroaching edge water. Only lately has there been evidence that the function and importance of gravity was to receive due consideration. Study of this neglected phase of oil recovery is needed to round out our knowledge of reservoir behaviors and to gain a balanced viewpoint of the interplay of forces that may operate in varying importance in reservoirs. The purpose of this paper is to discuss mainly in a qualitative way, the functions of gravity, to present some concrete instances where it has been important and to raise some questions that should be investigated further. Oil-recovery Agents The important natural agents for effecting oil recovery that may be originally available in a reservoir are gas, both dissolved in the oil and free in gas caps, encroaching edge water and gravity. Each of these agents can act in a dual capacity—physically to overcome the surface energies that hold the oil within the pores and mechanically to overcome viscous . resistance and to propel the oil through the porous reservoir rock to the wells. Advancing edge water displaces the oil from the pores and lifts it updip to structurally lower wells. Gravity drains the oil from the pores and flows it downdip to the wells. Gas displaces oil from the pores, entrains it in the gas stream and flows it to the wells, but gas in solution also affects the physical properties of the oil and thus can influence oil recovery by the other agents, whether or not the mechanical energy in the gas is utilized. General THE controlling supply of asbestos for the world is obtained from southern Quebec, 150 miles or less north of the international boundary line between Canada and the United States, and about 75 miles south of the city of Quebec. The principal production is furnished by eight mines, seven of which occur within a distance of 6 miles, but there are also several smaller properties in the vicinity. The industry was begun in a small way some 35 years ago and has advanced more or less regularly ever since. The annual production now exceeds 100,000 tons and its value is about $3,000,000. It represents over 80 per cent. of the world's production. History Asbestos has been known in the eastern townships of Quebec since 1847, when attention was called to it in an official report by Sir William Logan, the first Director of the Geological Survey of Canada, but it was not until 30 years later that it came into commercial importance. The largest deposits, those of Thetford and Black Lake, were found in 1877 during the construction of the Quebec Central Railway. Work was begun upon them almost at once and has been continued ever since. The Danville mine, the next largest producer, was opened in 1879, and the slip-fiber deposits of East Broughton were located shortly afterward. For the first 15 years only the "crude" asbestos was recovered; that is, fiber long enough to be extracted by hand cobbing. Although this is still a valuable part of the production, it is now a relatively small part of the total output.

MANY aspects of the formation of the metastable w phase in titanium-transition metal alloys have been described in several recent papers.1-4 These papers have reviewed earlier work on the w phase and have further defined most of the important features related to the formation of this phase, e.g-., its crystal structure, composition, and morphology. There are, however, several important points regarding formation of the w phase in titanium alloys which have been described in less detail. Two of these are the relationship between lattice misfit and w phase morphology and the influence of lattice misfit on the mode of formation of the equilibrium a phase. In this communi- cation we will present transmission electron microscopy results relevant to these two points. The alloys used in this study were prepared by non-consumable electrode arc melting, each 30-g button being remelted a minimum of twelve times. The alloy compositions we have studied are listed in Table I. Thin foils were prepared using standard techniques described elsewhere. Two distinct c' phase morphologies have been reported in earlier papers. The phase is ellipsoidal in the Ti-Mo3 and Ti-Nbl system and cubical in the Ti-V3 system. Results of the present study show that the w phase is also cubical in Ti-Mn, Ti-Fe, and Ti-Cr alloys as illustrated in Fig. l(b) to (d). The key to disagreements between Blackburn's findings and mine is the word equilibrium". My work attempted to define the equilibrium diagram of the titanium-rich end of the Ti-A1 system. It can readily be shown that Blackburn's conclusions are based primarily on the examination of structures substantially removed from equilibrium. The diagram presented in Fig. 16 is properly labeled a "phase diagram". However, it appears that Blackburn either does not understand or does not accept the difference between "phase diagram" and "equilibrium diagram" as defined in the Metals Handbook.17 The conflict lies not in Blackburn's data but in his interpretation of it, and his use of "transformation", "phase diagram", and "equilibrium diagram" as synonymous terms. I share his view that the light microscope is much inferior to the transmission electron microscope for the study of transformations; but this fact does not render the light microscope useless or untrustworthy. The difficulties experienced with the Ti-A1 system have not been due to the limitations of the light microscope, but rather to the extreme sluggishness in achieving equilibrium at temperatures below 1000° C. Were it not for the light microscope employed with polarized light, the twin phase syndrome' might still be unrecognized and, as a consequence, still adding to the confusion of Ti-A1 investigations. (Ref. 1 should read ... Contract No. N161-25952 ... vol. 236.) Other, more sophisticated techniques, including electron transmission, simply confirm the erroneous tentative conclusions drawn from observations of structures due to the twin-phase syndrome. By the standards of most of the investigations of the Ti-A1 systems, seven of the fifteen compositions investigated by Blackburn were seriously contaminated with oxygen. The writer has found that 0.1 wt pct 0 shifts the a + Ti3A1 boundary to 1 at. pct lower A1 content at 700°C. At constant aluminum content, this corresponds to a temperature shift of the boundary of +25°c.18 Blackburn advises that the first group of alloys contained 0.1 to 0.15 wt pct 0, bur he does say whether the analyses were performed on as-received material or on specimens in their final state of heat treatment. This is especially important considering the 20-mil-thick starting materials. If specimens had been annealed in the two-phase a + 6 region it would have provided an indication of the final degree of oxygen contamination since up to about 12 at. pct A1 the boundaries of this region are well-defined for low-oxygen alloys. Blackburn questions the capability of light microscopy in determining phase boundaries in the Ti-A1 system. I submit that the a/a + Ti3A1 boundary in Fig. 1 of Ref. 1 over the composition range from 10 to 18 at. pct A1 was determined by dilatometry and supported by electron diffraction. Specimens of alloys containing 8, 10, 12, and 14 at. pct A1 were aged at 550°C for 1000 hr (under stress of 5000 psi to accelerate the tendency to equilibrium) and then fractured in tension at room temperature. Collodion was applied to the as-fractured (unetched) surface and, when stripped, carried away particles identified by electron diffraction as Ti3A1. This brief resume of the events transpiring in Mexico, culled from the daily New York newspapers since the last Bulletin went to press, does not show any degree of improvement in the situation. U. S. WITHDRAWS ARMY FROM MEXICO The American invasion of Mexico lasted less than 24 hours. The troops which crossed the Rio Grande June 15 to put a stop to the firing that was causing death and injury in El Paso were back in their billets on the American side of the border the next night. They had broken up the battle between Villa rebels and the Carranza garrison and driven the rebel forces headlong out of Juarez and into the hills. The Carranza Consul, Garcia, and Gen. Francisco Gonzales are reported by American officials to be pessimistic, if not indignant, at the swift reprisals made by the Americans against the stray shots which were falling in El Paso during the Villa attack on Juarez. In announcing his action in ordering Americans into Mexico Brigadier General Erwin in a formal statement said he had done-so to prevent the indiscriminate firing into El Paso by rebel soldiers, endangering the lives of Americans. "But on no account were they to undertake an invasion into Mexico," continued the statement. Americans with interests in the vicinity of Chihuahua are alarmed lest Villa, smarting under the defeat administered his troops by the American forces, should make a campaign of destruction. General Candido Aguilar, President Carranza's confidential ambassador to the United States, issued to the press, on June 17, a formal statement that "the government and people of Mexico consider as a violation of Mexican sovereignty the crossing of United States soldiers into Mexican territory" and expressing the hope ?that the situation created by the latest occurrences in Juarez will be satisfactorily adjusted between the two countries." Discussion of Mexican affairs was evoked in both houses of Congress by the crossing of the Rio Grande by American troops.

For a number of years the production and use of super-purity aluminum (better than 99.99 pct) has been steadily increasing. High-grade lots of. such aluminum show certain outstanding characteristics not found in lower grades containing principally silicon, iron and copper as impurities. One such characteristic is the so-called "self annealing," that is, the re-crystallization of the heavily cold worked metal at room temperature.' Interest therefore is aroused as to the effects of the impurities. It is well known that the amounts of silicon and copper which occur in aluminum of better than 99.95 pct are completely soluble, at least at elevated temperatures (above 200°C). Iron, on the other hand, is known to be fairly insoluble in solid aluminum. Thus, a knowledge of the limits of this solubility would he of considerable use in studying the characteristics of the high purity metal. All investigators have agreed that iron has very low solubility in solid aluminum. Rosenhain, Archbutt and Hanson2 reported traces of an aluminum-iron phase in the "purest samples of aluminum obtainable." Gwyer and Phillips3 reported that an iron constituent was visible under the microscope in metal containing ".0088 per cent iron." Roth4 found that in the solid state the solubility of iron in high purity aluminum was 0.01, 0.01, 0.017 and 0.022 pct at 225, 320, 500 and 600°C respectively. Dix5 working with alloys containing less than 0.03 pct impurities, concluded from microscopic and chemical analyses of eutectic areas that the eutectic composition was close to 1.7 pct iron. Dix placed the eutectic temperature at 65s°C. Archer and Fink,6 using high purity aluminum-iron alloys, found that the hypoeutectic liquidus intersects the eutec-tic horizontal at 1.7 pct. This is in fair agreement with the investigation of the aluminum-iron system by Gwyer and Phillips who placed the eutectic at 1.89 pct iron with a freezing point of 653'C. Preparation and Chemical Analysis oP Alloys Electrolytically refined aluminum (99.991 pct aluminum) and a high purity alumi-num-iron alloy (11.45 Pet iron) were used in the preparation of the alloys for this investigation. To aid in controlling the iron content of the experimental alloys, an alloy of lower iron content was prepared first from these materials. The high purity aluminum was melted and heated to about 700°C in a plumbago crucible coated with alundum cement and the aluminum-iron alloy was then added. The alloy was thoroughly stirred, fluxed and skimmed and then chill-cast into notch bars. The aIlalyses of the three materials are given in Table I. The alloys for the determination of the solid solubility of iron in aluminum were prepared by melting 600 g total of the aluminum plus the required quantity of the aluminum-iron alloy (No. 92531). AN unexpected and unprecedented demand for its products now challenges the petroleum industry. Between 1939 wand 1946, domestic oil demand increased nearly 45 per cent and in the first half of 1947 it was 10 per cent higher than in 1946. In 1939 the United States produced 1,264,962. 000 bbl of crude oil and indications are that about 1,860,000,000 bbl will be produced in 1947, a 47 per cent increase. Runs to stills are more than keeping pace with production. The crude capacity of 365 operating refineries is rated as 5,400.000 bbl daily and almost 100 per cent of this capacity was running crude oil in August 1947. The oil industry is cognizant of our need for a greater volume of petroleum products and is expending the huge stun of four billion dollars on exploration. production. transportation, refining. and marketing of petroleum. Of this amount about half will be spent on exploration and production. a billion on refining. and another billion on transportation and marketing facilities.

Originally, mining machines were actuated by purely mechanical mechanisms comprising cams, levers and gear trains, which became more and more complex as demands were made for additional operations that would increase mine tonnage. To simplify these intricate machines, development engineers began utilizing the principles of high-pressure hydraulics long employed for the control of various machine tools. The resulting specificially developed hydraulic systems are. now literally the heart of the mining machine. During world war NO. 2, very little fundamental change in design was made in existing mining machines, but because of the recognition of the merits of hydraulic application to the machines of war, it is reasonably certain that hydraulics will be applied to mining machines in the future to a much greater extent. This potential future indicates that a more thorough knowledge of hydraulics and its maintenance must be incorporated in mine operation. Maintenance of high-pressure hydraulic equipment varies considerably with respect to mine practice and conditions. The success or failure is largely dependent upon the hydraulic fluid and its care. Since all successful hydraulic systems have been designed around the use of mineral oil as the fluid, a complete analysis of this prime factor should be made to make clear the requirements of the fluid in a hydraulic system. Contamination of Oil Manufacturers of mining machinery usually have specified an S.A.E. rating or viscosity index of the proper mineral oil for use with their respective machines without considering the fact that many oils will meet these specifications but will not give the desired life or efficient operation. Hydraulic fluid should be specified as a good grade of mineral oil, such as turbine oil, having rust and oxidation resistance. It must have high chemical stability, high lubricity, and proper viscosity. These factors will minimize maintenance costs by reducing wear and the consequent replacement of parts, and at the Same time will lower costs for the oil by extending its life. Rulk purchases of oil should be limited to small sealed containers provided with a Proper pouring spout, thus reducing the possibility of contamination of the oil before it reaches the mining machine. The introduction of foreign matter, such as sand, water, coal dust and residue oil left in filling containers, will cause untold damage and maintenance expense. Sand, being one of the best natural abrasives1 will soon wear the close tolerances of the various hydraulic mechanisms to an extent that will necessitate complete replacement. Water is considered normally insoluble in oil, but because of the churning action of a hydraulic system water is broken down to particles so small that they remain in suspension. All the possible ways of forming simple two-dislocation boundaries in multiple slip orientations are deduced. It is shown that the principal differences in work hardening behavior of crystals plastically deformed in these orientations can he accounted for in terms of the likelihood of formation of diffuse boundaries, or deformation bands, consisting of the products of dislocation reactions of the Lomer type. Also, it is pointed out that the break-up of boundaries under the applied stress is more likely to yield interstitial jogs than vacancy jogs, whereas glide dislocations cutting throuqh dislocations trapped in particularly stable boundam'es can acquire both types of jogs. USING Frank's' grain boundary formula, Ball and Hirsch2 determined the parameters of all the possible boundaries that can be built from two sets of glide dislocations in the fee structure. This paper deduces the geometrical possibilities for the formation of these two-dislocation boundaries in the different multiple slip orientations, and discusses the role of boundaries in work hardening and in jog formation. Formation of Two-Dislocation Boundaries in Mutiple Slip Orientations. The parameters of the possible two-dislocation boundaries for any crystal orientation can be deduced most conveniently using the boundary formulae due to Amelinckx,3 in conjunction with the stereographic projection shown in Fig. 1. Suppose that slip occurs in a-BC and ß-CA. According to Amelinckx, when the two systems of glide dislocations are parallel, the rotation axis, u, of the boundary is parallel to (a x ß) and the unit normal, u, defining the boundary plane is parallel to (a x ß) x (BC x CA). On the other hand, when the glide dislocations form a crossed grid, u is parallel to (BC x CA) and u is parallel to (a x CA) x (ß x BC). In Fig. 1, (a x ß) is the pole of the great circle passing through a and ß, so that u is parallel to DC, i.e., parallel to [110]. Furthermore, (a x ß) x (BC x CA) is the pole of the great circle passing through DC and 6, so that u is parallel to [110]. Hence, when all the glide dislocations are parallel, the boundary is pure tilt with parameters u = [110], v = [ 110]. Similarly, it may be shown that the corresponding crossed grid of dislocations is a mixed boundary with u = [111], u = [111]. Consider the case of a crystal compressed in the [001] orientation. In this orientation, according to Fig. 1, there are eight available slip systems. In what follows, the different types of two-dislocation boundaries that are possible in this orientation will be examined by taking different combinations of two slip systems out of the available eight, with a-BC always one of the systems. Case (i)—Slip Systems a-BC and d-CB. The formation of a tilt boundary in (101), which consists of a crossed grid of edge dislocations with vectors BC andCB, is illustrated in Fig. 2(a). As the figure shows, slip is required in the system a-BC in one part of the crystal and in d-CB in the other part, with both sets of dislocations entering the boundary from opposite sides. The rotation axis of the boundary lies in (101), depending on the relative densities of the two sets of edge dislocations in the boundary. Case (ii)-Slip Systems a-BC and ß-CA. THE migration of carbon in austenite under the influence of an electric current has been observed qualitatively several times.14 Lebedev and Guterman5 recently have reported quantitative measurements; their method consisted of welding a low-carbon to a high-carbon wire, passing current, and later estimating the carbon distribution metal-lographically. We believe the method reported in this paper is superior in principle since electrolytic migration and ordinary diffusion are not necessarily coupled as in the weld method; also for the first time the extent of migration is determined by combustion analysis for carbon. A uniform tubular specimen (S.A.E. 1045 or 1095) was mounted as illustrated in the figures. the whole assembly being in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen. Direct current (129 to 226 amp at 0.65 to 1.0 v) served as source both of heat and of potential gradient for carbon migration. The duration of experiment was 7.5 to 12 hr, during which time the temperature was controlled (±10°C) manually. The experimental conditions are indicated in the first five columns of table I. With this experimental arrangement, the temperature initially has a maximum value at the central plane. Also, in this vicinity (by virtue of the symmetry), the carbon entering any volume element is equal in quantity to that leaving; the loss or accumulation of carbon occurs near the electrodes since the carbon moves uniformly near the center and is "frozen" at the cold ends. Hence, providing the time of experiment is not sufficiently long to seriously influence the conditions at the central plane, carbon crosses this plane only under the influence of the electrical potential gradient and not under the influence of temperature or concentration gradient. The amount of carbon which has crossed this plane was determined by combustion analysis of the two halves of the specimen. The results of these analyses are shown in the sixth and seventh columns of table I. It will be noted that substantial amounts of carbon migrated from the anode portion to the cathode portion (except at 920°C, which temperature was too low to exhibit the effect in the allotted time). In spite of precau-tions taken, considerable decarburization occurred as may be seen by comparing cols. 8 and 5. In three cases (indicated by asterisks in table I) the specimen was ground on one side, polished, and examined metallographically before analysis. One specimen was normalized and re-examined. Micrographs of selected areas in specimens 4 and 6 are shown in figs. 1 and 2, respectively. Evidence of carbon migration from the anode toward the cathode is quite apparent. Fig. 2 shows abundant graphite as well as cementite in a region near the cathode. The temperature of this zone is estimated at about 800°C. In fig. 1, particularly in the micrograph on the extreme right (the right side of which is of unaltered carbon content), there is evidence of slight depletion of carbon in the immediate vicinity of the cathode as contrasted to the general increase in carbon of the cathode half of the specimen. Although this may be attributed in part to decarbur-ization, it is believed that it is occasioned also by thermal diffusion—migration (of carbon) from a cool to a hot zone4—a phenomenon superimposed upon the electrical migration. A number of recmt determinations for the ratio of extrinsic to intrinsic stacking fault energy in fcc solid solutions are examined. Some of these arise from incomplete analyses which can yield only approxi?nate values for the ratio. Reliable results, on the other hand, obtained using extrinsic-intrinsic fault pairs, show that the extrinsic and intrinsic fault energies are essentially equal in several materials. There is some reason to believe that this finding is of general applicability to fcc elements and alloys. A wide range of values has been obtained for the relative magnitudes of the extrinsic and intrinsic stacking fault energies (yext and yint, respectively) in recently published studies in a variety of materials. In contrast, Hirth and Lothe' using a central force model have shown that out to tenth nearest-neighbor interactions the perturbation in energy caused by both types of fault is the same. Although the model used is not completely valid in metals, there is nevertheless some indication that marked variations of yext/nnt should not be observed from one material to another. In early work in Cu-A1, Cu-Ge, Ni-Co, and stainless steel all the deformation faults observed in the electron microscope were found to be intrinsic in nature, which led to an attitude that the extrinsic fault energy must be considerably greater than the intrinsic. Extrinsic faulting arising from deformation has, however, more recently been directly observed in Au-4.8 at. pct n;~ Ag-6 at. pct Sn and Ag-8 at. pct sn; Ag-7.5 at. pct In and Ag-11.8 at. pct 1n;"' pure silwer and Ag-0.5 at. pct ~n;' and Cu-22 at. pct Zn, Cu-30 at. pct Zn, and Cu-7.5 at. pct ~1.l' Multilayer loops containing extrinsic faulting have also been observed in quenched aluminum." While peak asymmetries in X-ray faulting probability studies were generally attributed to the presence of twins,Lelel2 has recently reinterpreted earlier X-ray data in Ag-Sb alloysU in terms of the presence of extrinsic faulting. The determinations of yeXt/yint made from the above studies are shown in Table I, with a brief description of the techniques employed. A number of the methods utilized are deficient in one or more respects, and the reliability of the values listed will be discussed. ~ele'~ recognizes that his approximate determinations of yext/yint assumes equal numbers of extrin-sically and intrinsically faulted dislocations. It is well-known, however, that such an assumption is not at all justified since extrinsic faulting has but rarely been observed in samples studied in the electron microscope. The only conclusion that should be drawn from the X-ray results at present is that the total intrinsic scattering cross section (i.e., the product of the width of the intrinsically faulted dislocations with their density) is approximately ten times greater than for extrinsic faulting in these particular samples. An important point is that the relative magnitudes of the energies cannot be inferred from results of this type, unless the intrinsic and extrinsic faults form with equal ease. One must recognize that, although a formation barrier may restrict the amount of extrinsic faulting which occurs, this in no way implies that the extrinsic and intrinsic energies should be different. It is unlikely that a worthwhile estimate of the relative densities of extrinsically and intrinsically faulted dislocations can be made at the high deformations present in X-ray samples. ~oretto,'~ from a statistical argument applied to the nonobservation of extrinsically faulted tetrahedra out of a large sample, concluded that yeXt/yint could not be less than -4.5. However, the present author feels that a high-energy formation barrier as just supposed also explains this finding satisfactorily and that no conclusion can possibly be drawn concerning the actual extrinsic stacking fault energy. The same argument also serves to explain the fact that extrinsic faulting has been relatively little observed in the electron microscope. Extrinsic-intrinsic node pairs and isolated extrinsic nodes were first reported by Loretto~ and subsequently by Ives and Ruff,' Gallaher,' and Gallagher and Wash-burn.' Ives and Ruff' found a wide spread in the ratio of extrinsically to intrinsically faulted area in the node pairs they observed, and drew the very tentative conclusion that yeXt/yint 2 2. They recognized that a straightforward comparison of the size of the faulted areas could provide no more than a qualitative result without a theoretical analysis of the dislocation geometry associated with extrinsic faulting. OIL-WELL depletion curves, to be of value, should show when a well or lease may no longer be operated at a profit. The difference, at any time, between the total expenditures and the total income of a lease or well may be called the lease status. Plotting this lease status against time will give a curve subject to more accurate and different interpretations than the barrels-time curves. According to the hypothetical barrels-time curves shown in Fig. 1, well A, at the end of 16 mo., is producing twice as much oil as well B and will continue to produce for another year whereas well B will cease producing in about 6 months. THE importance of the Widmanstätten structure to structure theory in metallography has been recognized by many writers.1 It is a structure produced by the precipitation of a new phase from a solid solution upon cooling as a result of changing solid solubility, and displays a characteristic appearance indicating a crystallographic relationship between the new phase and the original solid solution (Fig. 1). First discovered in 1808 by Alois de Widmanstätten2, the structure has been traced by analogy through many alloy systems. Particularly is this true of the steels. Sorby's classic work3 on the microstructure of iron and steel was in essence an attempt to explain the origin of this characteristic structure in meteoric iron. He observed in a Bessemer steel and in a cast-steel ingot structures which we now recognize as typical Widmanstätten figures.4 Osmond5 observed structures in a steel ingot analogous to those found in meteorites. Intermittent coal mining has been conducted in Alaska for over a century. The first report of coal in Alaska was by the Veechy expedition of 1826 and 1827. Whaling ships used coal from Corwin Bluff near Cape Beaufort during the early and latter parts of the 19th century. The first coal mine in Alaska-and probably the oldest in the Pacific coast of North America-was opened by the Russians at Port Graham on the southwest tip of the Kenai Peninsula. The mine was operated from 1855 until 1867 when the United States took possession of Alaska. From 1880 to 1915 coal mining was carried on intermittently at several localities including Unga Island, Herendeen Bay, Chignik Bay, Kachemak Bay, and several points along the Yukon River. Small coal mines along the Yukon River provided fuel for the river steamers traveling from St. Michaels to Whitehorse. The area of sustained coal production began with the completion of the Alaskan Railroad from Anchorage to the Matanuska coal field in 1916 and to the Nenana field in 1918. Coal production continued to increase until 1953, at which time the oil and gas fields in Cook Inlet were developed. Oil and gas eventually replaced the Matanuska coal as a means of providing heat and power. The military in the Anchorage area shifted from coal to oil in 1967 causing a decrease in production. The increased demand for electric power in the Fairbanks area offset the decline and coal production started to increase. In 1969-1970 the Golden Valley Electric Assn. (GVEA) constructed a mine-mouth power plant 70 miles southwest of Fairbanks near Healy and a power line to Fairbanks. Location of Coals in Alaska Coals are found in all geographical subdivisions of Alaska. Coal in Alaska ranges in age from Carboniferous to Tertiary, and grade from lignite through anthracite. Fig. 1 shows the locations of Alaskan coal fields. The only fields that have been developed extensively are the Matanuska and Nenana. Fig. 2 illustrates the annual production of coal in Alaska and the ratio of underground to strip mining.
