THE object of this investigation was to determine whether silver alloys could be used instead of the currently employed insert of high-expansion AVERAGE COEFFICIENT PER DE G. C. OVEN RANGE 20° To 200° C. Pure aluminum '31.6 X 10-6 Cast low-expansion Si-Cu-Ni-Al piston alloy 20.0 X 10-6 High-expansion austenitic Cu-Ni cast iron 19.3 X 10-6 Cast steel (0.25-0.35 C, 0.10-1.0 Mn) 12.6 X 10-6 Cast iron (3.15 total C, 2.16 Si) 12.8 X 10-6 Pure silver 18.9 X 10-6 austenitic ferronickel alloy, to reduce the wear of ring grooves in light metal pistons. A typical example of a piston containing a ferronickel insert is shown in Fig. 1. The high coefficient of expansion of silver made it worthy of consideration, while the small size of the insert would render it use feasible in Germany as an emergency in is- tire. The coefficients of linear expansion of several metals and alloys are as shown in the table above. Obviously the melting point of the insert must be high enough to prevent it from melting when the light alloy is cast around it. This imposes a lower limit of about 850° C. for the solidus of the silver alloy. Pure silver melts at about 961° C., so that the Fin. 1.-PISTON CONTAINING tolerable depression in the solidus is rather FERRONICKEL INSERT. small. To avoid deformation of the insert during use a Brinell hardness number of at least 60 appears necessary.

THE transformation, in a sample of levitation melted iodide titanium, has been studied with a Leitz hot-stage microscope. The specimen was etched in HF:HNO3: glycerine, (1:1:2) giving a structure shown in Fig. 1, and was then heated at approximately 5OC per min. At 870°C (±5OC) the etching product disappeared, the a-grain boundaries showed in relief, and some new grain boundaries (presumably of ß) appeared (Fig. 2, see arrow). Some evidence of ß-grain growth is indicated by the apparent longitudinal movement of a ß-grain boundary shown in Figs. 2 and 3 (see arrows). The specimen was later heated to 1000°C and then cooled at 2°C per min. At 845°C rumpling of the surface was first noticed, Fig. 4, and continued at constant temperature. The photomicrograph reproduced in Fig. 5 was taken 6 sec after Fig. 4, at 845°C. Fig. 6 shows the structure after cooling to room temperature. The room-temperature structure, showing a rumpled surface has been observed by previous investigators.' These structures presumably indicate a sheer transformation ß - a, athermally nucleated, but capable of isothermal progression.

IN the art of roasting sulfides it is well known that the lower the temperature and the higher the pressure of SO, the larger will be the amount of sulfate present in the product. However, the mechanism of sulfate formation is not generally understood. The following experiment" demonstrates in a direct way that, in the roasting of Cu2S, the sulfate forms from the reaction of Cu2O, formed by the oxidation of Cu2s, with gaseous SO, (or SO3) and 0,. Thus, the sulfate does not form at the sulfide surface. The reaction at the sulfide surface is the same whether or not sulfate is formed. Using an indirect method, Ong, Fassell, and Wadsworth' infer that sulfate forms after oxidation, during the roasting of sphalerite, agreeing with the observations of this paper. The method presented here of demonstrating that sulfate forms after formation of Cu2O is to roast a sample of Cu2S and then to locate and identify the phases formed.' A solid cube of cuprous sulfide, made by melting Fisher reagent grade Cu2S powder and measuring about 1.5 cm on edge, was placed on a Nichrome wire grid suspended over the top of an Alundum combustion boat. The assembly was placed in a tube furnace at 600°C and oxygen gas, flowing at 0.60 liters per min, was passed around the specimen for 24 hr. The furnace tube diameter was 1.5 in. The partially roasted sample was removed from the furnace and impregnated with resin No. BR 0014, obtained from the Palmer Products Co., and the impregnated sample was then mounted in Lucite. A cross section was obtained by grinding and the surface was prepared by the following steps: 1) grinding—60 grit, 3M disk, dry; 2) preliminary polishing —60 through 600 grit, 3M disk, dry; 3) polishing— 8 µ diamond putty, silk cloth; and 4) final polishing —1evigated magnesia in isopropyl alcohol, Selvyt cloth. The color micrograph of the polished surface is shown in Fig. 1. The layers present in the micrograph are given along the side. The comwositions of the various layers were established by Debye-Scherrer patterns. From this evidence the following sequence of reactions which occur in the roasting of Cu2S is inferred: 1) The oxidation of Cu2S occurs with oxygen which has been transported through the oxide-sulfate layer by either gaseous or solid state diffu- sion. The products of this reaction at the Cu2S surface are Cu2O and SO,. 2) The SO, diffuses out through the pores in the Cu2O and finally reaches a position in the Cu2O where the oxygen pressure and the SO, pressure have values such that the thermodynamic conditions for the formation of CuSO4 are fulfilled. Then, the mixture of SO2, SO3, and oxygen reacts with the Cu2O to form CuSO1. 3) The CuSO, decomposes by the evolution of SO,, or SO, and O2, to form the basic sulfate. This is reasonable, since the SO, gradient will decrease toward the oxygen gas phase from the CuSO4 layer. 4) For this same reason the basic sulfate will decompose to form CuO. The above sequence of events is based on the assumption that diffusion through the oxide and sulfate layers, rather than the reaction at the sulfide-oxide interface, is rate-determining. This assumption is supported by the observation that these oxide and sulfate layers combined are almost nonperme-able to the flow of gases through them. In all geophone desigm there is provision for differential movement between parts of the mechanism and the signal voltage is generated as a function of this differential movement. The part that conforms to the movement of the ground is called the support, and the part that remains more nearly stationary with respect to more distant unactuated parts of the earth is called the steady mass. The mechanical period of the geophone is the time required for an oscillation of the steady mass after an initial impulse is given it, and is determined by the effective stiffness of the spring joining the two parts together in relation to the weight of the suspended part. Geophones have been used with frequencies varying all the way from less than 10 cycles per sec. to several hundred cycles per second. Those with a natural frequency of less than, say, 100 cycles

The kinetics of acidified thiourea leaching of pyrite concentrate was investigated at temperature ranging form 20 °C to a 60 °C. The effect of various parameters on the dissolution rates are discussed. The gold extraction was found to be zero and first orders with respect to Fe (111) and thiourea concentration, respectively. The order of the reaction with respect to sulfuric acid was found to be zero. The activation energy was determined from the Arrhenius plot as 2,039 kcal mole -1 (for a freshly prepared acidic solution containing Fe (111) as the oxidant and at 800 rpm stirring speed. This relatively low activation energy value suggests that the gold extraction is controlled by a-physical phenomenon. Under optimum conditions, more than 90% of gold has been dissolved in about 30 min. and 95% in 60 min. Attempt to recover gold from thiourea solution using active carbon is also discussed.

Blasting safety is a subject that cannot be overemphasized. Two years ago, a study was published describing g a series of fatal blasting accidents which took the lives of ten metal and nonmetal miners during the period of May 1973 to August 1974.1 Each accident was described, and the direct causes were delineated. In each instance, specific MESA safety regulations were violated. Four of the victims were killed by drilling into explosives; two were killed by lingering too long in the vicinity of fuse rounds; two fatalities resulted from improper guarding of shots; one blaster did not retreat far enough to avoid the blast concussion; and another used an improper tester for checking an electric blasting cap. All of these fatalities could have been avoided by adhering to the MESA blasting regulations contained in 30 CFR Part 55 (Health and Safety Standards-Metal and Nonmetallic Open-Pit Mines), Part 56 (Health and Safety Standards-Sand, Gravel and Crushed Stone Operations), and Part 57 (Health and Safety Standards-Metal and Nonmetallic Underground Mines).

This paper briefly describes a simple air pycno-meter and its use for rapid determination of the composition of mixtures of solid particles. Research on such problems as the pelletizing of solids, the mixing of solid particles, and the comminution of mixtures can be simplified by means of this analytical tool. Much time has been devoted, by metallurgists, to the study of steel after solidification and remarkable strides have been made in the heat treatment of steel, but less knowledge is available of the thermophysical activity of the constituents of steel prior to solidification in the mold. It is known that certain elements added to steel produce marked changes in physical properties, also that other elements added to steel produce similar changes, but we have only meager knowledge as 'to. how these elements combine in steel under different conditions of solidification. It is not sufficient to know, from chemical analysis, that a certain element is present in steel. We should know how this element is in combination with the other elements and whether the combination is such as will give the greatest physical properties. Certain elements go into solid solution with the iron, while others segregate to the grain boundaries and combine with the impurities collected there. Until it is known where an alloy produces the most beneficial effect and a means is determined for controlling its physical location by altering solidification conditions, or otherwise, we will not obtain the maximum value from our alloys. When molten steel freezes, it forms a heterogeneous mass of various crystalline constituents; and as the transformation of steel from a liquid state to the solid crystallized state is a critical step, involving as great a transfer of heat as any other operation in the making of finished steel, a variation in the rate of this heat transfer will have much to do with the arrangement of the various constituents in the solid state. The object of this paper is to show some of the effects on steel caused by variations in the rate of cooling in the ingot mold, particularly as to ingotism, segregation, dendrites, and intergranular material.

The comments contained in the discussion of the paper concerning the prediction of fracture gradients are of considerable interest, since the subject is of a very controversial and timely nature. It is regrettable and Fairhurst2 contradicts the author's statement in the third paragraph of Other Applications. These references create significant doubt that Eaton's Eq. 1 predicts fracture pressure during the injection of fluid into old wells. 3. No evidence is presented in this paper to support the author's Conclusions 2 and 3. While an empirical coefficient related to back-calculated field data is correlated with depth (Eaton's Fig. 4), there is no reason to suspect that this coefficient might be the Poisson's ratio of the various formations involved. 4. Until the field data supporting the empirical approach proposed by the author are presented and evaluated, the accuracy claimed in Conclusion 5 is without substantiation. References 1. On March 18, 1964, the 52,000 dwt ore carrier M/S Houn Maru called at the port of Coquimbo, Chile, on its maiden voyage to take iron ore to Japan. This marked the first time a vessel of this size ever arrived at Coquimbo, and the event promises to drastically accelerate henceforth iron ore exports from Coquimbo province. This was made possible by the use of a versatile shiploading system recently installed by Cia. Minera Santa Fe. Coquimbo has no mechanized loading facilities other than six conventional 5-ton cargo cranes. Limited space on shore further complicates the stocking problems. To make the best of what is available, a meticulously organized semi-hand-loading system has been developed through the years.

During the last 25 years, multistage mixer-settlers have been used extensively for liquid ion exchange work. The mixer-settler has the advantage of being a compact device in which a large number of stages can be assembled in a relatively small area. They are particularly advantageous for the separation of rare earths. Most of the adjacent rare earths have separation factors which are near one, which means that a large number of stages are needed to produce a good separation. When two elements (m, n) are extracted simultaneously, the separation factor (ßm, n) is defined as: [ ] where Ym, Yn are the molarities of the respective elements in the organic phase and Xm, Xn, are their molarities in the aqueous phase at equilibrium. The industrial consumption of rare earth oxides rose to over 6800 tons in 1968, an increase of 33% over 1967.1 The increased production and demand for rare earth and lanthanum chlorides for petroleum cracking catalysts was one of the principal factors in this increased consumption of rare earths. In 1968 approximately 59% of the rare earth oxides produced were used for gasoline cracking catalysts in the form of rare earth and lanthanum chlorides. There was also an increase in the sales of lanthanum oxides for use in optical lenses and in fiber optics. The future looks good for the rare earth industry. The rare earths can be expected to be used in many new products which are being developed. Until the late 1950's tributyl phosphate (TBP) was the principal solvent used in rare earth liquid ion exchange. In 1957 Peppard3 reported the use of di (2-ethyl-hexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as a solvent for separating the rare earths. NOTHING in this paper is to be understood as even suggesting a moment's suspension of the splendid work now going forward on the Isthmus of Panama, except so far as it is related to the proposed locks. All the work already done, and all material purchased or ordered, would be available for the plan herein proposed. The situation and the problem concerned may be summarized as. follows : The scheme of a lock-canal through the Isthmus of Panama was adopted, as is well known, on two principal grounds-namely, the greater expense of a sea-level canal, and the longer time required for its construction. Of these, the latter is believed to have been the more influential. But further developments have diminished the weight of both, so that a reconsideration of the question is warranted. It is the purpose of this paper to advocate such a reconsideration-emphasizing the importance of certain objections to the lock-canal not mentioned or not duly appreciated in the report of those members of the International Board of Consulting Engineers who favored this form; showing the nature and bearing of the new facts developed; and, finally, proposing a combination of well-known methods and apparatus, which would, in my judgment, effect the construction of a sea-level canal in less time, and perhaps at no greater cost, than will be required for the remaining work on the lock-canal. THE paramount subject of interest and concern at the present time is the readjustment in economic conditions following the cataclysmic disturbance produced by the war and the misconceptions leading to an orgy of extravagance that prevailed during two years following the armistice he, time is too short for me to undertake to review the nature and extent of the upheavals occurring between August, 1914, and October, 1920. Bulky volumes will be written about them. . But I shall have to refer to some of the results in order to outline a prognosis. It is the future, not the past;' that is of most interest to us. Let me be so bold as to say, without further preface, that I am not optimistic as to the near future. .We shall, indeed, have revivals in trade, but they will be delusive if their nature be not 'understood. We shall build hopes and expectations upon political maneuvers and events, only to find in the end that they were folly. In the meanwhile fundamental economic influences will continue to exert their steady and irresistible pressure. The new administratiow at Washington has no magic wand with which to kindle the fires in our idle steel furnaces, or create a million new houses for the people; nor can the premiers of Europe put into motion the spindles of the cotton and woolen mills, or by any incantations compel the people of the Orient to buy goods. The people of the Orient, and of, Europe, and of the two Americas are in the grip of the same economic forces. The readjustment has proceeded further in some parts of the world than in others. In the United States I do not think we, have gone more than over the threshold. I shall tell you why 1 think thus, but in telling you I shall be limited, in view of the immensity of the subject, to a series of bald statements, without much elucidation.
