THE principle of fractional crystallization has been successfully used to prepare high-purity (99.999 pct) Ga. Hoffman and Scribnerl removed single crystals of gallium solidifying in a gallium melt, while Zimmerman2 grew single crystals from the melt by the Kyropolous technique. In contrast, attempts at purifying gallium by zone refining have been less successful. ichards, reported that despite the passage of 40 zones through a gallium ingot, there still remained 5 to 70 ppm each of Cu, Fe, Ca, Mg, Si, Al, and Ag. Previously, Detwiler and Fox4 detected only one impurity, Pb, segregating in zone-refined ingots. These surprising results prompted an investigation of the factors controlling impurity segregation in gallium. Possible reasons for this were insufficient diffusion of impurities in the melt; recontamination of the melt by its oxide film which is not affected by the passage of the zone; reaction of gallium with the boat; sudden freezing of gallium following supercooling, especially since gallium easily supercools to and trapping of impurities at grain boundaries. Impurity segregation tests were carried out by directionally freezing gallium using the Bridgman rnethd, modified in that the molten gallium is lowered out of a furnace into a slush of dry ice and trichloroethylene, thus minimizing supercooling. Since the gallium is contained vertically, the oxide film is in contact only with the tail end of the melt. It was found that Teflon makes an excellent crucible for gallium since it is quite pure, non-reactive, translucent, flexible, machinable, and is not wet by gallium. The gallium crystals could be grown at various speeds, and the melt could be vigorously stirred by a Teflon rod moving through the gallium in a vertical reciprocating fashion. Single crystals could be grown by placing a solid Teflon plug at the bottom of the melt drilled out in such a way to cause the solidifying gallium to follow a winding path. Thus, even if many crystals are originally nucleated, only one grain will predominate. The grain structure of the gallium crystals was revealed by an etchant composed of equal volumes of HC1, HNO3 and HF, diluted with water to half strength. Emission spectrographic analyses were carried out on samples removed from the front and tail ends of the resulting gallium ingots. Typical results of this study are summarized in Table I. The rate of freezing in all three cases was about 1 in. per hr. It can be seen that even though stirring of the melt does help, it is even more important to grow a single crystal of Ga in order to obtain good segregation of impurities. The effect of crys-tallinity on the segregation of impurities was previously observed6 in the directional freezing of germanium; however, in this case, the effect was much less pronounced. This dependence of impurity segregation on the crystalline perfection of Ga may be related to its thermal conductivity which is the most anisotropic of all metals.7 The anisotropic thermal conductivity can cause the solid-liquid interface to be nonuniform, thus leading to trapping of impurities during freeing, and therefore reduced segregation. In conclusion, it is indicated that zone refining of gallium would be more successful if seeding and similar precautions are taken to insure single crystal growth. The authors are indebted to Mr. H. THE American producers of silver are keenly alive to the importance of the silver problem and its vital effect on the mining industry in Montana and other States where precious-metal mining constitutes a basic industry. There are so many ramifications to the subject that one is tempted, no matter from what angle an approach is made, to digress along lines that inevitably lead into a maze of social, economic and financial problems, through which no clear pathway is marked, and regard¬ing which no definite opinion can be expressed, as the ultimate solution is dependent upon the policies adopted and carried out by the more important Governments with reference to their fiscal requirements and currency systems. The situation may be summarized in two questions First, what, if any, plan have the silver producers, as being the most directly interested, to offer in meeting the situation which will confront the industry upon the termination of purchases of domestic silver under the Pittman Act? Second, what, if any, assistance can be extended by the Government in connection with the problem? In answer to the first inquiry, while the matter has been the subject of discussion among the principal producers, they have been unable to formulate a defi-nite plan, principally because they have been and are dealing with a subject embracing many unknown fac-tors; and second, it has been felt that before any plan is adopted there should be indicated the extent to which cooperation on the part of the Government may be depended upon to enable a proper study of the situation to be made. In order to explain these rather cryptic statements, a general review of the situation may aid. Whatever differences of opinion there may have been in the past upon the subject of bi-metallism or the establishment of a fixed ratio between the coinage value of gold and silver, it will probably be conceded that it would be neither wise nor expedient to attempt a revival of this discussion, nor to undertake to solve the question by the adoption of such a remedy. Issues of contro-versial economics must be avoided, if possible-political economics will destroy rather than assist constructive effort.

Discontinuous yielding in tensile tests was observed in V-O alloys in the temperature ranges of 150° to 175°C and also 350° to 400°C. The magnitude and intensity of the serrations were found to vary considerably with oxygen content. Maxima were observed in tensile and yield strengths and in the strain-hardening coefficient at the higher temperature only. The strain rate sensitivity was observed to be negative between 150° and 400°C. THIS investigation was undertaken to study the effect of oxygen on the tensile properties of iodide vanadium in the temperature range of 25o to 450°C. Brown1 observed an increase in strength between room temperature and 400°C in vanadium metal, and found that oxygen and nitrogen had a rather pronounced effect on the strength and ductility. A maximum in the tensile strength was observed by Rostoker et al.2 near 300oC and by Pugh3 around 450°C for calcium-reduced vanadium. Pugh also found a maximum in the yield strength and in the strain-hardening exponent, and minima in the elongation and strain rate sensitivity at the same temperature. Eustice and Carlson4 reported the appearance of serrations in the stress-strain curves between 140° and 180°C in iodide vanadium containing 600 ppm O. These anomalies in the mechanical properties indicate that strain aging occurs in vanadium, but the impurity or impurities responsible for the above-mentioned effects have not been identified. The phenomenon of strain aging is usually characterized by the return of the yield point after interruption of a strength test. In the temperature range where strain aging occurs, the yield and tensile strengths attain maximum values, elongation and strain rate sensitivity exhibit minima, and discontinuous yielding is generally observed in the stress-strain curve. Cottrell5, 6 has postulated that strain aging is due to the migration of solute atoms to dislocation sites to produce locking after the dislocations have broken free from their impurity atmospheres during the initial yielding. At the strain-aging temperature the process is a dynamic one in which the solute impurity atoms diffuse to the vicinity of the moving disloca- tion producing "locking" which gives rise to maxima in the tensile strength and serrations in the elongation curves. Cottrel17 has noted that discontinuous yielding in iron occurs when the diffusion coefficient of nitrogen, D, and the strain rate, i, are related by D = 10-9 €. EXPERTMENTAL PROCEDURE The vanadium metal employed in this study was prepared by the iodide refining process as described by Carlson and owen.8 A representative analysis of the vanadium used in this investigation was: 150 ppm O, <5 ppm N, <1 ppm H, 150 ppm C, 150 ppm Fe, 70 ppm Cr, <50 ppm Si, 30ppm Cu, 20 ppm Ni, <20 ppm Ca, <20 ppm Mg and <20 ppm Ti. Alloys containing from 200 to 1800 ppm O, all of which lie in the solid solution range of the V-O system, were prepared by arc melting vanadium together with portions of a high-oxygen master alloy. The master alloy was prepared by tamping pure V2O5 into holes drilled in a vanadium ingot and arc melting this five or six times in an inert gas atmosphere, inverting the button between each melting step. The oxygen content of the master alloy was then determined by vacuum fusion analysis. Vanadium containing less than 150 ppm O was prepared in the following manner. A bar of iodide vanadium was deoxidized by sealing it in a tantalum crucible with a few grams of high-purity calcium. This was held at 1100°C for 4 days to allow time for the oxygen to diffuse to the surface and to react with the calcium vapors. The calcium oxide product was later dissolved from the surface of the bar with dilute acetic acid. In this way vanadium containing from 20 to 50 ppm O was prepared. Sample Preparation. The are-melted ingots were cold swaged into 3/16-in. diam rods and these were machined into cylindrical tensile specimens with a reduced section of 1.00-in. length and 0.120-in. diam. The test specimens were annealed for 4 hr at 900°C in a dynamic vacuum of mm of Hg to remove hydrogen from the metal. This recrystal-lization treatment produced a uniformly fine-grained structure with a mean grain size of approximately 0.06-mm diam. The oxygen contents reported in this paper were determined by a vacuum fusion analysis of the tensile specimens after testing. Analyses for other interstitial or metallic impurities showed no significant changes from that of the original material. Tension Tests. THE previous determinations of the solvus of tin in solid lead disagree with one another by as much as 40°C or almost 10 at. pct. Even determinations that appear to be careful differ considerably in both the solubility and its temperature coefficient. Recent kinetic workl -3 on the rate of precipitation of tin from lead-tin alloys and thermodynamic work4 on the heat of solution of tin in lead have given some insight into the time necessary to reach equilibrium in this system. As this time is longer than that used in almost all previous determinations of the solvus, these determinations are questionable. Since the interpretation of recent kinetic results requires accurate values of the equilibrium solubility the present work was undertaken. DISCUSSION OF PREVIOUS RESULTS The methods used in previous studies may be placed into three classes: 1) Several alloys covering a range of compositions are allowed to reach "equilibrium" at a certain temperature.5-7 Some property, such as the X-ray lattice parameter of the lead-rich phase or the re- sistivity of the alloy, is then measured as a function of composition. The solubility limit for that temperature is taken to be that composition at which a discontinuity in the property occurs. However, the recent kinetic work has shown that tin precipitates in two stages. The first stage is rapid but leaves the lead still supersaturated. The second stage is very slow, and it seems from the equilibration times quoted by the investigators of the solvus that the end of the first stage of precipitation was usually mistaken for equilibrium. This is especially true at temperatures below 100°C where the first reaction is still quite rapid (from minutes to months), but where the second stage is so slow that very long holding times are required to reach equilibrium. Alternatively micrographic work8 on several alloys of different compositions seems to have given good results if done carefully. 2) The beginning of precipitation in a homogenized alloy is measured as it cools slowly8-10. Since reactions in solids undercool easily, such determinations will always give too low a temperature for the solvus. 3) Some property of an alloy is measured as a function of temperature while the alloy is above the solvus.5,9,11 The range of temperature can usually be extended slightly into the two phase region. Then the alloy is precipitated at a much lower temperature and slowly reheated. The solvus is taken to be the lowest temperature where the property of the reheated alloy is equal to that previously determined for the homogeneous alloy. Usually one also expects a discontinuity at the solvus in the temperature variation of the property for the reheated alloy. The difficulty in this method is the sluggishness of the dissolution process, and this method may give too high a solvus temperature. EXPERIMENTAL The phase boundary or solvus temperature was determined by a modification of method 3 for a series of chemically analyzed high-purity alloys, ranging from 5.1 to 26.4 at. pct Sn. The resistance, as a function of temperature, of a sample of homogenized alloy (which could easily be undercooled) was compared with the equilibrium resistance which that alloy sample attained after precipitation at room temperature followed by long isothermal anneals at various temperatures. Before each anneal the sample was rehomogenized and reprecipitated. The solvus temperature could be located to within 1°C as the intersection of the resistance vs temperature curves for the homogenized and equilibrium alloys. No attempt was made to locate the phase boundary more accurately since the limiting factor was the precision with which the alloys could be analyzed. This precision was ±0.1 wt pct Sn and corresponds to an error of 1 deg in temperature. This use of isothermal anneals differs from some of the previous investigations in which method 3 was used with baths of slowly rising temperatures. It was found early in the investigation that solvus temperatures tended to be high if the latter method was used even at extremely slow heating rates. For example a

Experimentation which measures differences in pressure across the interfaces of immiscible fluids in the interstitial spaces of porous media may be termed "capillary pressure experimentation". In the literature of petroleum technology since 1941 there have appeared twelve papers popularizing capillary pressure concepts and developing applications of these concepts for the solution of problems of practical reservoir engineering importance, such as the determination of connate water, fluid distribution. in transition zones, reservoir rock textural properties, and oil recovery from petroleum reservoirs.&apos; Although a review of the literature would be justified at this time in order to reconcile the conflicting viewpoints which are contained in the cited papers, the object of this note will be of more limited scope. It is believed that the recent paper of Muskat alls sufficient attention to many of the uncertainties which arise upon examination of the published literature. such that until satisfactory counter-proposals can be made it will serve our purpose only to mention some other like uncertainties. This will emphasize further the need confronting petroleum technologists to re. consider and reformulate the application possibilities of capillary pressure experimentation. In particular, I sug- gest that we examine the thesis that capillary pressure experimentation as above defined can lead to measurements reflecting the recovery of oil from petroleum reservoirs, as was proposed first" by Amyx and Yuster" and was first reduced to practice by the experimentation of Welge. In fact. I shall deal exclusively with the Welge papers since it is the principle one on this subject which has appeared to date. I shall attempt to show that the possibility of describing oil recovery features in terms of capillary pressure phenomena has not been established entirely. The Welge paper was a pioneering effort to evaluate this recovery application possibility. P. P. Reichertz&apos; comments on the Welge paper state that non-wetting phase discontinuities are developed occasionally in the Welge experiment, and restate Muskat&apos;s argument that discontinuous fluid elements (partially saturating the interstices of porous media which are elsewhere saturated with some other immiscible phase or phases) are not subject to the requirements of hydrostatic equilibrium. It is the purpose of my comment to show that it is unnecessary to make Reichertz&apos; postulation regarding non-wetting phase discontinuities (however valid) when it is desired to criticize welge&apos;s theoretical treatment of his problem. It can be shown that Welge&apos;s method of measuring values for &apos;&apos;capillary pressure" is invalid in many instances of application, such that his reported curves of capillary pressure Versus fluid saturation often have no physical meaning, even throughout the interval of fluid saturation where it might be otherwise suspected that no phase discontinuities occur. By considering established principles of capillary pressure experimentation it can be shown that the pressure difference experimentally observed between wetting and non-wetting fluid Phases which are contained in external reservoirs will reflect on the capillary pressure difference at the interfaces of contact between these phases only when the following conditions are satisfied: (a) There shall be a balance between the opposing forces of gravity and capillarity, as obtains under conditions of hydrostatic equilibrium when the positions of the interfaces of contact become fixed in pore spaces of certain geometry (b) The wetting and non-wetting fluids within the interstitial spaces shall everywhere be continuous with the external wetting phase reservoir and the external non-wetting phase reservoir, respectively. It will become apparent immediately that in any instance when a greater pressure is recorded in the external wetting phase reservoir than in the external non-wetting phase reservoir, one may establish either that static equilibrium has not been attained or that discontinuities in one or more of the fluids have been developed. This is because the pressure otherwiee is always ereatest in the non-wetting phase at each static interstitial interface of contact with the wetting phase. such that the externally measured pressure in the non-wetting phase likewise must be greatest if the above conditions are to be satisfied.

Thai means free. Historically accurate, as the country has never been subjugated by foreign occupation, the name "The Land of the Free" also seems to fit the attitude of the people. At the Bangkok airport, without so much as a kopkhun (thank you), travelers are found behind, beside and in front of ticket counters. A pretty Thai face on TV calls flights in English and Thai. Baggage disappears with alarming rapidity and your reporter and spouse despaired of ever being reunited with it. But at the entrance, all the parts came together and there was even a limousine from our hotel, The Oriental. Driving downtown English style, we noted that there were four lanes of traffic occupying the space we would allow for three lanes. Motorcycles and enclosed three-wheel motorcycle taxis were much in evidence, but the occasional water buffalo held up the slow lane. In the city, men wore European-type slacks and shirts but the women were colorful in traditional ankle-length wraparound skirts.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) THE Fushun coal-field, now being opened up by the South Manchurian Railway Co., is connected with the main line by a branch, 30 miles long, from Sui Chia Tun, 10 miles south of Mukden, the capital of Manchuria. The coal-field, which lies on the southern bank of the Hun river, 25 miles east of Mukden, consists of a long narrow valley,. running east and west between hills composed of granitic and volcanic rocks. At the foot of the northern hills, the Hun river flows westward towards the Liao river, which drains the greater part of South Manchuria. At the foot of the southern hills, resting immediately upon volcanic rocks, and overlain by 20 ft. of alluvial, is a thick layer of Tertiary shales, carrying near the base two coal-seams. In many places the lower of these two seams is in immediate contact with volcanic lauds and basalts, the flows of which were evidently both prior and subsequent to the formation of the coal-seams. This contact has practically destroyed the lower seam for commercial purposes. The value of the field lies in the upper seam, which, for a length of nearly 8 miles, varies from 100 to 130 ft. thick. Of this seam, 85 per cent is good coal. The seam dips to the north conformably with the shales, at angles of from 25° to 30°, and appears to have an uninterrupted dip for about 1.5 miles before being possibly cut o$&apos; by the northern hills. The coal-bearing shales extend east and west for a length of about 20 miles, but towards the east the continuity of the seams is broken by intrusive rocks. The coal is of the sub-bituminous variety, low in ash, bright in appearance, and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. THE location, mode of occurrence of ore, and preliminary tests leading to the development of the present leaching process and the building of the present plant on the property of the New Cornelia Copper Co. at Ajo, have been described in previous papers presented to the Institute and in the, discussions thereof.1 It is sufficient to say that these tests began early in July, 1912, and were continued to the close of January, 1916; that small tests at Douglas were followed by the construction of a 1-ton plant at the mine; and this was followed by the operation of a 40-ton plant for 14 mo. This paper gives a brief account of the geologic and production problems encountered in the Grass Creek oil field, the methods used in their solution, and the beneficial results obtained from the work. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance received from J. H. Pearson and Miss Ninettta A. Davis in the collection of the data and the preparation of the cross-sections. Permission for its publication was given by the officials of the Midwest Refining Co. and the Ohio Oil Co. The Grass Creek oil field is located in Ts. 98-99 W., R. 46 N., Hot Springs County, Wyo. The productive area includes about 2 1/2 mi. (4 km.) on the apex of a great anticlinal fold occupying more than 150 sq. mi. Fig. 1 shows the structural contours of the field. Oil was dicovered in the field in June, 1914; development proceeded rapidly and production rose to a maximum in 1918. The marketed production has been approximately as follows: Barrels Barrels 1915.................... 94,073.5 1918................... 2,946,774.27 1916................... 1,404,183.97 1919................... 2,000,584.84 1917.................... 2,780,697.51 1920................... 1,485,080.94 About 350 wells, 800 to 1500 ft. (243 to 457 m.) deep, have been drilled to reach the upper oil sands; two companies, the Ohio Oil Co. and the Midwest Refining Co., operate the entire field. The principal producing sands in the field are members of the Frontier Formation, a series of sands and shales occuring in the upper portion of the Colorado Group of the Upper Cretaceous seriee. These Frontier, or "Wall Creek" sands are also productive in the Salt Creek, Big Muddy, and Elk Basin fields and, therefore, are much the most important reservoirs of light oil in Wyoming. At Grass Creek, the sands in the Formation are more numerous than in the other fields and much less uniform in thickness and character. Usually, eight distinct beds are encountered and in some wells twelve sands have been reported. The formation above
