In coursing the ventilating air through a mine it is often necessary to restrict a comparatively open split in order that it may carry exactly the desired quantity of air. Such a restriction is known as a regulator, and usually takes the form of a partition with a hole in it. The quantity of air circulating is controlled by the size of the hole or orifice. For example, it is desired to force a quantity q I cu. ft, per min. through split a (Fig. 1) and the quantity q2 through split b. It requires a pressure of 2 in. water to force the desired quantity through a, and a pressure of 1 in. to force the desired amount through b. The pressure drop between points A and B must be 2 in and a pressure of 1 in. must be destroyed in split b. This is done by inserting a regulator in b, which causes the velocity to increase in the orifice and results in a change from pressure-head to velocity-head. If the air, after passing the orifice, is slowed down in a turbulent manner, all of the velocity-head does not change back into pressure-head, so a permanent loss of static pressure results. A classic formula for computing the area of an orifice to destroy a certain amount of static pressure has been handed down from early days: 0.0004Q a =2 This formula is based on the assumption that all velocity-head in the orifice is "destroyed;" that is, does not reappear again as either velocity-pressure or static pressure. The derivation of the formula is as follows: h = head lost in regulator in fect of air. v = velocity in regulator in fect per second. q = quantity circulating in cubic feet per second. Q = quantity circulating in cubic feet pcr minute. a = area of orifice in square feet.

THE decomposition on cooling of the high-temperature ß bcc phases in copper- or silver-based binary systems usually takes place by a martensitic. massive, bainitic, or pearlitic reaction depending upon the particular conditions of each system. The AgAl system is one of these systems in which a massive or a martensitic transformation can occur upon cooling from the 3 phase field. Recently Hawbolt and Brown1 observed both massive and martensitic transformation products in a 22.7 at. pct A1 alloy. In the present work the massive and the martensitic transformations were investigated in a number of alloys for the composition range between 23.2 and 27.9 at. pct Al. The alloys were prepared using high-purity silver, 99.999 pct, supplied by ASARCO and aluminum, 99.999 pct, supplied by ALCOA. The metals were melted using a graphite or a sintered alumina crucible which was sealed in quartz tubes under an argon atmosphere. The alloys Were remelted to reduce segregation and homogenized in the 13 phase field for 24 hr. The weight of the alloys after homo-genization compared with the initial weight indicating the alloy composition to be within k0.1 pct of the in- tended composition. Chemical analysis of several samples confirmed the estimated alloy composition. All metallographic observations were performed on samples electropolished with ac current using a 10 pct solution of KCN and a stainless-steel electrode. The samples were cut into -1-mm-thick slices, polished, heat-treated in the ß phase field, and quenched in air, ice water, or iced brine. Some heat treatments consisted of a 2-min anneal carried out in air to allow maximum quenching speeds. Other samples were heat-treated in a vacuum of 10"4 torr and quenched using a helium blast in a quenching apparatus described elsewhere.&apos; In both cases, no appreciable losses of silver or aluminum were noted at the sample surface by sectioning and electropolishing. Table I summarizes the microstructure resulting from the various quenching treatments. The composition of the alloys investigated is also indicated on the equilibrium diagram in Fig. 1. The <, hcp phase, typical of a massive ß — cm, transformation, was observed in all alloys. A minimum temperature of 450°C was estimated for this transformation based on preliminary cooling experiments. the results being included in Fig. 1. In these

In the past 15 years a considerable amount of experimental and theoretical work has been done concerning the onset of convection in liquids as a result of interm1 density gradients. This work, which has been doue in many different fields, is reviewed here and extended slightly to give a rrlore quantitative understanding to the probletrz of conzection in liquid metal dlffusion experinletzts. In liquid metal systems the capillary reservoir technique is currently used, almost exclusively, to measure diffusion coefficients. In this technique it is necessary that the liquid be stagnant in order to avoid mixing by means of convection currents. Convective mixing may result from: 1) convection produced as a result of the initial immersion of the capillary; 2) convection produced in the region of the capillary mouth as the result of the stirring frequency used to avoid solute buildup in the reservoir near the capillary mouth; 3) convection produced during solidification as a result of the volume change; and 4) convection produced as a result of local density differences within the liquid in the capillary. The first three types of convection have been discussed elsewhere1-a and are only mentioned for completeness here. This work is concerned only with the fourth type of convection. Local density differences will arise within the liquid as a result of either a temperature gradient or a concentration gradient. It is usually, but not always, recognized by those employing the capillary reservoir technique that the top of the capillary should be kept slightly hotter than the bottom and that the light element should be made to migrate downward in order to avoid convection. In the past 15 years a considerable amount of work, both theoretical and experimental, has been done in a number of different fields which bear on this problem. This work is reviewed here and extended slightly in an effort to give a more quantitative understanding of the convective motion produced in vertical capillaries by local density differences. The Stokes-Navier equations for an incompressible fluid of constant viscosity in a gravitational field may be written as: %L + (v?)v = - ?£ + Wv - g£ [1] where F is the velocity, t the time, P the pressure, p the density, v the kinematic viscosity, g the gravitational acceleration, and k a unit vector in the vertical direction. A successful diffusion experiment requires the liquid to be motionless, and under this condition Eq. [I] becomes: where a is the thermal expansion coefficient [a =-(l/po)(dp/d)], a&apos; is a solute expansion coefficient [a&apos; = -(l/po)(dp/d)], and the solute is taken as that component which makes a&apos; a positive number. Combining with Eq. [3] the following restriction is obtained: Since there is no fixed relation between VT and VC in a binary diffusion experiment, Eq. [5] shows that the condition of fluid motionlessness requires both the temperature gradient and the concentration gradient to be vertically directed. Given this condition of a density gradient in the vertical direction only, it is obvious that, as this vertical density gradient increases from negative to positive values, the motionless liquid will eventually become unstable and convective movement will begin. The classical treatment of this type of instability problem was given by aleih&apos; in 1916 for the case of a thin fluid film of infinite horizontal extent; and a very comprehensive text has recently been written on the subject by handrasekhar.&apos; It is found that convective motion does not begin until a dimensionless number involving the density gradient exceeds a certain critical value. This dimensionless number is generally referred to as the Rayleigh number, R, and it is equal to the product of the Prandtl and Grashof numbers. For the sake of clarity a distinction will be made between two types of free convection produced by internal density gradients. In the first case a density gradient is present in the vertical direction only, and, since the convection begins only after a critical gradient is attained, this case will be called threshold convection. In the second case a horizontal density gradient is present and in this case a finite convection velocity is produced by a finite density gradient so that it will be termed thresholdless convection. Some experimentalists have performed diffusion experiments using capillaries which were placed in a horizontal or inclined position in order to avoid convection. These positions do put the small capillary dimension in the vertical direction and, consequently, they would be less prone to threshold convection than the vertical position. The Joint Economic Committee&apos;s subcommittee on international payments and exchange has recommended that, following international monetary reforms, the law which prohibits private possession of gold by American citizens be repealed. The subcommittee recommendation called for reforms to enhance the role of special drawing rights in international monetary affairs and downgrade the role of gold. Special drawing rights, also known as "paper gold", are on artificial reserve with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which distributes them to member nations in proportion to their economic importance in the world economy. The special drawing rights are then used to settle debts between nations in the same manner as gold or currency. The subcommittee said that under the reforms now being discussed special drawing rights would be acceptable in lieu of gold among the member countries of the IMF.

In the summer of 1888 it was the fortune of the writer to present the subject of the desirability of establishing a set of samples of steel, which should be analyzed with extreme care, in order that they might become standards to which scientific and commercial analyses of iron and steel could be subsequently referred; also, that greater uniformity in the results of analyses might be brought about, since these standards would bear towards analytical methods somewhat the position which the original units of weight and length, the gramme and meter, or the pound and yard, preserved in Paris, London, and Washington, do to the mechanical arts. The plan met with hearty co-operation, with the result that com mittees were appointed in Sweden, Germany, France, England, and America, to receive the material and to see that the necessary au alyses were executed. One of the most important questions that arises in ore estimation can be stated as follows: What is the error when one extends the grade of a sample to a certain volume? The theory of regionalized variables, with the concept of extension variance, provides a response to that crucial question for any kind of sample extended to any volume. For the usual "extensions" encountered in current mining practice, some simple results can be derived from that theory which was initiated by Dr. G. Matheron. These results have been applied to a stratiform lead-zinc deposit for which several estimations of grade, tonnage and related precision have been made for a series of grid sizes such as might be used in a progressive exploration program.

Single-crystal thin films of molybdenum have been grown. by the pyrolytic decomposition of molybdenum hexafluoride in a hydrogen ambient on various insulating substrates at temperatures front 650° to 900° C. Single-crystal discs of various orientations of magnesium aluminate spinel, a aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, and the natural facets of beryllium oxide were all observed to exert epitaxial control on the depositing film. Determinations of the crystallographic relationships existing between film and substrates have been made, using X-ray diffraction three-circle goniometry and Laue back-reflection techniques. Using these data, crystallographic overlays have been constructed which suggest a possible interfacial geometry on the basis of a match between metal deposit atoms and metal ion sites in the substrate. A continuing program has been in effect in the Auto-netics Laboratories over the past several years aimed at the development of electronic materials in new and useful forms using chemical vapor deposition techniques. During the course of these investigations, the epitaxy of silicon1"5 and tungstenep7 on single-crystal metal oxide insulators was studied extensively. The deposition of molybdenum is a logical extension of the tungsten work since the crystal structure is identical and the lattice dimensions differ by less than 1 pct. The pyrolytic decomposition of molybdenum hexafluoride in hydrogen was used to grow molybdenum films on the oxide substrates AlzOs, MgA1~04, MgO, and Be0 at from 650" to 900°C, depending on the substrate material. Under the experimental conditions to be described, monocrystalline films of controlled orientation were obtained. The materials investigated and their crystal structure are listed in Table I. EXPERIMENTAL The molybdenum depositions were effected by the hydrogen reduction of molybdenum hexafluoride (MoFe) in a flowing system of hydrogen at atmospheric pressure. The schematic of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. The hydrogen, purified by passage through a heated palladium thimble, was mixed with the vapor of the liquid MoFe maintained in a steel bottle at room temperature (25°C). This paper may be divided into two main parts: (1) analysis and data to show that Eq. 6 adequately correlates the authors&apos; experimental data, and (2) the assertion that Eq. 20 "should permit scale-up with data taken from one pipe diameter for Newtonian, inelastic non-Newtonian, and viscoelastic fluids, such as dilute polymer fracturing fluids, which produce considerable pressure reductions." The authors might well recommend that this broad grouping of fluid types could be correlated by using Eq. 6 (requiring data from at least two pipe diameters). On the other hand, Eq. 20 is only shown to be adequate for conditions within the range of the present data set. Specifically, predictions by Eq. 20 for diameter scale-up to casing sizes would give larger deviations than implied in Table 2, and scale-up for some other fluids that give large drag reduction could be grossly in error. The description of a class of fluids "which produce a diameter family of straight parallel lines on a log (d?p/4L) vs log (8 v/d) plot. . ." defines a necessary condition for using Eq. 6; i.e., that s shall be constant for each fluid. The proposal that Eq. 20 is applicable to turbulent flow of such fluids is equivalent to saying that the spacing of these parallel lines, with A being constant, will be found to correspond to m = -1.20 for all such fluids. Table 1 shows the values of m derived from data on 16 non-Newtonian fluids. The key statement of this paper is that the diameter exponents "do not vary significantly from . . . -1.20." In statistical terms, this says that the m value for each fluid, which was obtained from all the measurements made on that fluid. has not been shown to be different from the arithmetic mean of the m values for the 16 fluids tested. This implies that the group mean, -1.20, is a more reliable value to use for an individual fluid than is the m value derived from the data on that fluid alone. No statistical test is described to support the key statement that the diameter exponents do not vary significantly from -1.20. Such a test would have to take into account that each individual m value is shown to correlate the pressure gradients for its fluid, with only about 3 percent standard deviation over the diameter range covered. That is, the m value is not the result of a single independent measurement. Thus, it would not be sufficient, or valid, to compare the deviation of one of the m values with the variance of the 16 values of m about their mean. An alternative interpretation of the key statement is that the diameter exponents do not vary appreciably from -1.20; i.e., that using -1.20 does not cause serious inaccuracy. Table 2 seems to be offered in support of such an assertion. However, such a statistical treatment (1) is unnecessary and (2) cannot lead to any valid scale-up generalization. The amount of error introduced by using a 1"wrong" value of diameter exponent — i.e., -1.20 instead of m — is determined by Eq. 6. The ratio of the pressures predicted by Eqs. 6 and 20 for scale-up from ds in small pipe to d, in casing is The pressure for 30-percent calcium carbonate slurry (m = -1.112) in 10-in. ID pipe would be predicted 30 percent higher by Eq. 6 than by Eq. 20, if based on tests in 0.5-in. ID pipe. In order to obtain data on the thermal effect of the blast-furnace jacket and on the water consumption in these jackets a series of tests were run on the 56 by 180 in. blast furnaces at the Great Falls Reduction Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Great Falls, Mont. The arrangement of the jacket is shown in the transverse section of one of the furnaces (Fig. 1) on which the tests were made. The nose, spout, and breast jackets have independent water supplies and discharges. The end and side jackets are connected in pairs, as regards water supply, the feed water entering at the bottom of the lower jacket and overflowing into the bottom of the jacket immediately above it, and discharging into an independent overflow pipe for each pair of jackets. Tests were run on the main side and end jackets, the breast jacket, the spout, and the nose. Measurements were taken of the quantity of water discharged, per minute and the rise in temperature of the water in its passage through the jacket. The product of these two results, expressed in the proper units, evidently gives the number of units of heat removed per minute by the water. Sufficient work was done on each type of jacket to determine its behavior under different conditions, and the results from each set of conditions were checked by repeating the work from three to six times. The method used was as follows : The overflow from the jacket to be tested was arranged to discharge at will into a barrel, mounted upon platform scales. The discharge temperature was read just before turning the water into the barrel, and just before turning it back to the sluice; if the test lasted more than a minute, additional temperature readings were taken at 1-min. intervals from start to finish. PHILIP NORTH MOORE was born on July 8, 1849, at Connersville, Ind. His father, a civil engineer, was descended from Henry Moore who came from Ireland in 1773 to live in Washington, Pa. Through his mother, Philip Moore was descended from John North, who came to America in 1635 and settled in Connecticut. The story of Mr. Moore&apos;s life as told by himself is given on pages 373-386 of T. A. Rickard&apos;s "Interviews with Mining Engineers." He studied at Miami University, where he gained the degree of A.B. in 1870, and A.M. in 1873. In 1920 his alma muter conferred on him the honorary degree of LL.D. He, as a special student, was a member of the class of 1872 at the School of Mines of Columbia University.

THE use of color adds a new beauty, power, and versatility to metallography. This has been amply demonstrated in a number of public exhibits and on the walls of corporate, government, and university metallographic laboratories around the world. Indeed, in a number of cases, the color not only is of esthetic value but is scientifically essential to the competent examination of particular samples and systems. Optical strain analysis,&apos; determination of true grain size in U-A1 alloys: phase identification in Nb-base alloys,3 analysis of transformation rates in heat-treated Nb-Zr alloys,4 measurement of solidification segregation in cast Nb-Zr alloys,&apos; study of the intermediate phases in Nb/Sn diffusion couples,6 investigation of the oxidation kinetics at various surface orientations in single crystals,7&apos;8 and a number of other research efforts9&apos;10 would have been vastly more difficult without the extra clarity and distinction introduced by color—either the colors resulting from particular polarized light techniques or the interference colors obtained by oxidation. It is unfortunate that the beauty of colored micro-structures cannot be shared more widely, but the economics of publishing a technical magazine apparently prohibits color plates except under extraordinary circumstances. It is doubly unfortunate that no convenient, general method exists for communicating the information available in colored microstructures to the scientific community. True, in some instances the color changes observed are dramatic enough that direct black and white photography is adequate. In photoelastic stress analysis, several orders of interference fringes may be produced and it is frequently desirable to suppress the color effects (use monochromatic light) to simplify interpretation. On the other hand, relatively minute color variations may be readily detectable by eye, be of considerable assistance in interpreting a structure, and yet be enormously difficult to reduce to an unambiguous black and white print. In order to illustrate a possible compromise or solution to the above problems, we wish to show three black and white photographs of the same region of an Nb/Sn diffusion couple whose interpretation depends heavily upon use of color techniques. These micro-structures were obtained from a section through a rod consisting of commercial-purity niobium tubing filled with 99.995 pct Sn (melt-filled in 10"6 Torr vacuum). The composite rod, measuring 500 mm long, was bent into a hairpin shape and inserted into water-cooled copper grips in a vacuum high-temperature furnace. The rod was outgassed for 2 hr at a furnace temperature of 800°C and was further heated by self-resistance using a 2.2-kva ac power supply. The rod was raised to 1910°C over a 4+-hr period, held for 15 min, slow-cooled to 1500°C over a -hr period, and free-cooled to room temperature (all temperatures were measured with W5Re/W26Re thermocouple). Throughout the heat treatment the ambient pressure was kept below 8 x lo-&apos; Torr. Metallographic preparation of the sample was completely conventional except that it was necessary to extend the grinding steps to remove damage in the brittle NbsSn phase introduced by sectioning. No satisfactory chemical or electrochemical etch has been found for these diffusion couples; of those which have been tried, any that attack the niobium-rich phases at all attack the tin-rich phases disastrously. However, the final polishing steps did produce a slight relief effect and this, coupled with anodizing, yielded excellent clarity in the microstructures for direct observation. The anodizing voltage was chosen to give maximum change in color per unit change in composition. In this case, indeed normally, this maximum sensitivity occurred in the blue-to-red color range. The Oregon School of Mines Society held its regular monthly meeting on the evening of October 23. This meeting was an informal reunion at which members gave accounts of personal experiences during the last three months. Many members of both junior and senior classes answered their country&apos;s call to arms and so did not return to college. The senior class is particularly well represented in the Army, as two men hold lieutenant&apos;s commissions and a third is already in France with a hospital unit. The junior class has also contributed men to various branches of the service. Plans for the regular meetings include discussions by members and lectures by outside authorities oil mining and allied topics. These meetings are open to the lower classes and all others interested. The Oregon School of Mines Society, composed of members of the junior and senior classes, has, joined with the sophomore and freshman relining students in purchasing a Liberty Bond under the name of the Miners&apos; Club of 0.
