The particle size of tungsten metal powder used to make tungsten wire for use in radio tubes and incandescent lamps must be closely controlled if the highly desirable feature of nonsagging is to be achieved. Our knowledge of factors affecting the particle size of tungsten powder has been limited by lack of any extensive literature on the subject. There are no publications in the English language discussing this problem in any but the most general terms. In this paper the published experimental information on this subject is reviewed. Based on the published data and some experimental data obtained by the author, a general theory of factors affecting the particle size of tungsten metal powder obtained by reduction of the oxides in hydrogen is offered. The various forms of the tungsten oxides and tungsten metal used in the experiments described were those prepared by commercial processes, so that the experimental results obtained on a laboratory scale would be more directly applicable to actual commercial reduction conditions. The effects of time of reduction, temperature. and concentration of water vapor in the hydrogen were observed by counting microscopically the particle distribution obtained. Such a method is very time-consuming, but the data obtained by this method are more reliable and more fundamental than those obtained by any of the several instruments available for measurement of particle size. Review of the Literature Until the year 1912, tungsten powder was prepared commercially by reducing tungstic oxide in the presence of carbon or one of its compounds (such as glycerin or ethylene glycol), usually by firing the mixture in a closed fire-clay crucible. The resultant powder contained about 95 per cent tungsten.' When reduction of tungsten oxides by H² was introduced Commercially,²,³ several investigators became concerned with the equilibria between tungsten metal and its several oxides in an atmosphere of hydrogen and water vapor.4-l3 While these many investigations were in fair agreement on the equilibria WO³ + H2 = WO2 + H2O and WO2 + 2H2 = W + 2H2O there arose considerable controversy as to the chemical composition of the oxide between WO³ and WO², because of very poor agreement on the equilibrium constant of this intermediate oxide reduction reaction. The controversy on this intermediate oxide has been in progress for more than 100 years. Thus Malguti,14 in 1835, decided it was WO2.56 In 1857, Riche15 proposed the formula W³O8. Usler,16 in 1865, confirmed the existence of WsO8 and further proposed W1O1l. In 1897, Desil7 agreed upon W²O8 but also found W5O14.

C. M. Bishop (Aircraft Div., A. V. Roe Cnnada Ltd., Toronto)—Reference is made to the coherency hardening of ß due to ß' and also to the hardening of ß due to a coherent precipitation of the a phase. What is meant by the term "ß'?" Would not the coherency hardening of ß during cooling be due to precipitation of a sub-microscopic dispersion of a, as is the case during reheating a ß-quenched alloy? I feel that these two phenomena are essentially the same mechanism, i.e., precipitation of a from unstable or supersaturated ß. From the text, it would appear that Tables III and IV are intended to show the effect of the martensite transformation on the properties of Ti-Mn alloys. Referring to Table 111, the ß-quenched alloys would contain a greater proportion of retained ß than would the equilibrated alloy. Could not the increase in properties be attributed to this, along with possible coherency hardening of the ß? In the same way, the structures referred to in Table IV contain ß from which they could derive their hardness. It would appear to be difficult, if not impossible, to assess the role of the martensite transformation from the data contained in these tables. F. C. Holden, H. R. Ogden, and R. I. Jaffee (authors' reply)—In reply to the first question raised by Mr. Bishop, the term "ß"' designates an apparent retained-p structure which is harder than it is after the most rapid cooling from the ß field. It is thought to be the result of a coherent precipitation of a. The mechanism by which hardening takes place is undoubtedly the same as that involved in the early stages of aging of a re-tained-p structure, and we are in agreement with Mr. Bishop on this point. The term "ß'" to designate the anomalously hard retained-ß structure was agreed upon at a symposium in 1953." The authors do not agree that the quantity of retained ß and/or ß' in the ß-quenched specimens of Table III is necessarily greater than that of the 600°C equilibrated specimens. The ß-quenched specimen has a structure which appears to be completely a' formed by the martensite reaction. It is recognized that there could be some retained ß (or ß') between the a plates if the M, temperature is below room temperature. This is unlikely for the 3.4 pct Mn alloy where the M, is known to be at about 640°C. Therefore, the increase in strength cannot be attributed to the presence of a greater quantity of coherency-hardened ß, but, rather, the increase in strength must be attributed to the transformation products formed, e.g., a' (martensiti-cally formed a). Concerning the data in Table IV, we agree that it is difficult to estimate the role of the martensite reaction, since the 6.4 pct Mn alloy was retained ß in the quenched condition.

IN view of the recent findings of a pronounced ordering of atoms in s phase alloys containing elements of the first long row of the periodic table (and including molybdenum),l it is of interest to resolve the question of ordering for s phases containing second and third-row elements. Examples of the latter have been provided recently by Greenfield and Beck2 and two of them, Re-Cr and Ru-Cr, would appear to be favorable for a study of ordering by X-ray diffraction methods because of the considerable differences in the scattering factors concerned. In addition, s phase is found to occur in the Os-Cr system, where the difference in scattering factors is even larger. Accordingly, X-ray powder intensities have been measured in an attempt to learn the nature of the ordering, if any, in these three v alloys. Since there is no reported work on intermediate phases in the Os-Cr system, an exploratory investigation was made in this system, and it was found that, in addition to the s phase, the phase with the A-15 or ß-W structure also occurs. Specimen Preparation—The alloys were prepared by compressing mixed powders of —200 mesh size and sintering in an atmosphere of pure dry hydrogen. All alloys were rapidly cooled from the annealing temperature to room temperature in a stream of cold dry hydrogen in a water-cooled chamber. Table I lists the sources and purities of the starting materials, as well as the details of processing for each of the alloys investigated. Intermediate Phases in the Os-Cr System—In the absence of information on intermediate phases in the Os-Cr system, it was suspected that this system would resemble that of Ru-Cr, where a s phase, RuCr2,2 and a phase with the A-15 structure, RuCr3,3,4 have been identified. Borehole models used in the study of nuclear well logging are reviewed and the merit of heterogeneous us homogeneous formation simulation is discussed. .A heterogeneous model for simulating sandstone formations of variable porosity is described. Simulation adequacy was checked by steady-state and pulsed-neutron measurements. INTRODUCTION In the course of developing new methods of nuclear well logging, the problem of testing new logging instruments under controlled conditions always arises. This testing is usually done in wells of known lithology, porosity and fluid saturation, or in laboratory test facilities which simulate the borehole environment. Although the former approach is possibly more satisfying, it is frequently difficult or inconvenient to find wells with enough variation in the cited parameters for a truly comprehensive study, On the other hand. laboratow- test facilities can simulate a wide variety of formation and borehole conditions if care is exercised to maintain adequate simulation under all conditions. Workers concerned with the development of nuclear well logging methods have reported several types of research facilities in the past. Tittle, et a1 used cubical tanks filled with Ottawa silica sand to study the steady-state behavior of thermal and epithemal neutrons in simulated sandstone logging environments.1 In addition to the effects of fresh vs salt water, a wide variety of casing sizes and compositions were investigated. Tittman also used a large tank of Ottawa sand to measure the slowing down length of sio2;2 for making the same measurement in CaCO3, however, an assembly of solid Vermont marble blocks was used. More recently a very useful and carefully planned test pit for nuclear logs was constructed under the auspices of the API.3 This facility consists of three massive limestone sections, each 6-ft thick and more than 5 ft in diameter. The blocks are buried, one on top of the other, in a concrete- lined pit having a total depth of 24 ft. Each section is made of a different limestone to achieve porosity variation, the selection being Carthage (2 per cent), Indiana (19 per cent) and Austin (26 per cent). The blocks are traversed by a 7 7/8-in. diameter borehole and are saturated with fresh water. Great care was taken to insure total saturation of the stone. Homogeneous mixtures and materials have not been used exclusively for simulating earth formations. Tittle, et a1 4 showed that a heterogeneous lattice of water and graphite could be used to simulate Liquid furfural with very little effecton measured thermal and epi thermal neutron distributions. Subsequently, a lattice-type model for simulating limestone earth formations was designed and built by Berry This limestone model was constructed of 7/8- x 11/4- x 36411. marble rods glued together with a plastic resin to form a 36-x 42- x 42in. cube. The cube was honeycombed vertically with 7/8- x 7/8- x 3641-1. holes for porosity and had a 111/2-in. diameter hole in the center to serve as the borehole. Lower porosities were simulated by placing marble rods in the square holes. The finished cube was used with the borehole vertical and set in a tank to hold liquid for filling the holes in the rock matrix. A second type of heterogeneous borehole model has been proposed by Kukharenko, et a1.6= In this concept the model is composed entirely of solid material. The hydrogen equivalent of formation fluids is simulated by making the model of alternating layers of dense rock and celluloid. Additional hydrogen is included by drilling vertical holes in the rock sections and filling them with solid forms of hydrogeneous material. The volume of the holes is equal to the volume of the celluloid layers, so an axial and radial dispersion of the hydrogeneous material is thus obtained. One such model was composed of alternate 50 mm-thick sand layers and 2 mm-thick celluloid sheets. Approximately 200 appropriately spaced plastic tubes were used in each sand section. The plastic tubes were filled with paraffin for additional hydrogen concentration. This arrangement yielded a model with a water-equivalent hydrogen concentration of 10 per cent. Power is furnished to the Climax Molybdenum Co. by the Public Service Co. of Colorado over two 100,000-volt lines to a bank of three 3333-kva. transformers 100/13.8 kv. These transformers are so designed that with the addition of forced cooling their capacity may be increased 33? per cent at 12,000-ft. altitude. Under present conditions, these transformers are operated at 140 Per cent of their rating with forced air cooling. On the secondary side of this bank there is a 15-kv., 1200-amp. Westinghouse oil circuit breaker provided with automatic reclosing relays allowing three successive short circuits before lockout. From this breaker 13.8-kv. power is transmitted to a central switching station (Fig. I) where all circuits radiate to the different operations of the property. Each circuit is protected by a 23-kv., 600-amp. oil circuit breaker with by-pass and isolating disconnecting switches. Mine Power at 13.8 kv. enters the mine through a ventilation raise over a three-conductor, size 1-0 varnished cambric insulated, leaded, steel-wire armored cable, insulated from 17 kv. This power is received and distributed through one switching station and four underground substations, shown in Fig. 2. No. 370 substation (Fig. 3) contains three a 13,800/440-volt, single- phase Pyranol transformers protected on the high-voltage side by a 600-amp. manually operated oil circuit breaker. This station serves 20 slusher-hoist motors, a 45-kw., three-phase, 220-volt electric furnace, a Massco hot miller for tempering and milling Timken detachable bits and a hoist with 175-hp motor on the No, 3 development shaft. Also at this shaft are three pumps. One two-stage pump, 1200 gal, per min., 500-ft. head, 3600 r.p.m., driven by a 150-hp. motor, is at the bottom of the shaft, Two deep-well pumps, 500 gal. per min., 500-ft. head, are at the collar of the shaft. under normal operation the one pumping 1200 gal. per min, is controlled by a float switch to take care of the water. If this pump fails, or if its capacity is insufficient, the first 500-gal. pump is automatically started1 and if still more capacity is needed the second 500-gal. pump automatically starts. Time delay relays are provided on the deep-well pumps, so that if power fails the column will have time to drain before the Pumps restart. On failure of any Of these, an alarm is sounded in the train dispatcher's office, so that mechanics can be sent to ascertain the cause of failure and make repairs. The cable from No. 37' substation is run to the switching station, in which are four 15-kv., 600-amp. direct-current sole-noid-operated oil circuit breakers. The current for Operating and tripping is furnished by a 125-volt storage battery. All breakers are operated from the switchboard in the compressor room. Still the world's largest producer, consumer and importer/exporter of minerals, the United States has, in recent years, become more and more aware of the many diverse forces that increasingly affect its ability to maintain free access to and trade in minerals, both domestically and abroad. The nation's growing dependence upon foreign sources of minerals in the face of mounting competition is causing many changes, not only in the mineral industries, but in national attitudes and policies as well. This paper examines the position of the United States in the world mineral economy relative to the significant trends that have and are developing. It attempts to define and evaluate the major present and future impact of these trends and to anticipate the probable effects upon the U.S. and its mineral economy.

The suggestion, which appears to find increasing favor, that the elementary composition of coals should be used as the basis of their classification, makes it important that our methods of expressing this elementary composition should be refined. It is doubtful whether many published ultimate analyses of coals are accurate within 1 per cent. carbon. Many are probably as much as 3 or 2 per cent. in error in carbon. It is, perhaps, not always realized that the extreme variation in carbon content over the range of bituminous coals is but 16 per cent. An error of 1 per cent. in carbon on analysis corresponds therefore with one-sixteenth of the whole range, an amount which is unjustifiable even for the application to commercial needs of a system of classification based on ultimate analysis. For the purposes of scientific research such limited accuracy is of little value. The object of this paper is to examine one important source of error in ultimate analysis, that due to the occurrence in coal of inorganic material, and to emphasize the need for the quantitative measurements (of carbon more particularly) on coals to be rendered independent of their contents of such material. Adventitious Mineral Matter When a determination of calorific value, for example, is made upon a coal, it is customary to correct the measured value with respect to the ash left by the coal on incineration, recording the result as being on an "ash-free basis." It is desirable, before discussing the adequacy of the correction thus made, to demonstrate its validity, which turns on whether the ash is present as an adventitious impurity in the coal and forms no part of the coal substance itself. The inorganic matter associated with coal has originated in several ways1: 1. The "inherent" inorganic materials, occurring as constituents of the plants from which the coal-forming deposits were derived.

The desirability of a uniformly sized abrasive for metallographic polishing has probably been recognized in a general way for a long time. Certainly all metallographers have recognized the damage that can be done to a polished surface by a piece of grit, especially if one of the softer metals, such as zinc or aluminum, is being polished. It is to be doubted, however, whether many metallographers have had any adequate idea of the particle size of the abrasives they were using or of the range of sizes encountered in any given grade of abrasive. At any rate, the descriptions of abrasives for metallographic work found in the literature are generally very meager. It was with the idea of securing an abrasive with a limited range of particle size that a study of this problem was commenced. Commercial abrasives, even when recommended for metallographic work, are made up of particles of varying sizes. One such abrasive contains some particles so fine that they remain in suspension for days and other particles so coarse that they settle at the rate of 3 in. per minute. It is evident that the coarsest particles are over 100 times the diameter of the smallest ones, or over 1,000,000 times the volume. The hopelessness of avoiding scratches under these conditions is evident. Vanderwiltl has described a laboratory method for grading abrasives in which the elutriator is used. Le Chatelier's method, described by Goereq2 also makes use of an elutriator. However, the elutriator is too slow for this purpose and requires too delicate a control for the range of sizes desired. The method of stirring up the abrasive in water, allowing it to settle for a given time, then drawing a measured depth off the top of the suspension, has been finally adopted as the simplest procedure. The largest particle in a given portion is then determined by Stokes' law:3

For openings in bedded rocks, analyzed by simple beam theory, it has been shown that roof loads can be shifted from one support to another.' This transfer is effected by controlling the relative deflection of adjacent supports. If this action is used to reduce loads in the props or bolts and increase them in the ribs or pillars, it could be productive of economies averaging 30 pct. Such savings can be realized by: 1) using smaller artifical supports such as props and bolts, and 2) increasing loads in the rib to induce eventual failure for longwall caving. Since the rib is relatively load-insensitive, it provides a natural load sink. However, caution must be used in applying such permissive deflections, for while the supports are being handled properly, the stresses in the roof itself are very sensitive to such manipulations.'

Cupellation is well known to be one of the most effective methods of separating silver and gold from base metals and other impurities, as well as one of the most accurate means for their estimation. In the latter application it consists in absorbing in some porous medium the fused lead oxide formed by the oxidation of the lead "bath," which carries with it the oxides of other base metals present. It has long been recognized that small amounts of both silver and gold were removed and absorbed together with the base metals, as well as being to some slight extent volatilized, and in work of the highest accuracy a correction is made for the "cupellation loss." Thus in the assay of bullion this is done by means of "proofs" of like composition, which are manipulated throughout in precisely the same manner as the assay pieces, and are assumed to lose or gain like amounts. In the case of certain very rich ores and commercial products the loss is adjusted by assaying the cupel itself and recovering the precious metal absorbed, but this doubles the labor and does not remedy the loss by volatilization. Arbitrary tables have been drawn up by various authorities with the object of enabling a correction to be applied without the use of a check. These have been of very limited practical use owing to the fact that a number of factors affect the losses sustained. For a fixed amount of precious metal the loss varies with the amount of lead used, with the nature and amount of the impurities, with the porosity of the cupel, with the air supply, and above all with the temperature at which cupellation is carried on. Pure silver loses relatively much more than gold, but the loss in either is diminished by an addition of the other metal. The concentration of precious metal in the litharge increases as the concentration in the lead increases, but little work has been published connccting the two. If all other conditions remain the same the actual total loss increases, but the percentage loss diminishes, with an increase in the weight of precious metal treated. The results of an immense number of experiments have been published at various times- during the past hundred years giving the actual or the percentage losses suffered under various conditions of cupellation, but the data are widely scattered and few attempts have been made to correlate them, so that no definite law has heretofore been shown to exist

The purpose of this paper is not to report, to the Institute, the results so far obtained in the survey, by the Bureau of Mines, of the metallurgical requirements for open-hearth refractories, but to present an outline that we hope will serve as a basis for discussion. The systematic survey that the Bureau proposes to make has not been outlined, although considerable preliminary work has been done in the way of interviewing open-hearth superintendents in several of the larger steel plants from the Chicago district eastward. At the several conferences so many of the opinions were diametrically oppoeite, when considering the same point, that it was thought that such an opportunity as the Institute offers in the way of a clearing house for moot metallurgical topics should not be overlooked. For this reason, the paper has been prepared as a basis for a discussion which, it is believed, will be of value in outlining the program of the Bureau. D. A. LYoN, Assistant Director. The importance of securing suitable refractories for metallurgical operations is daily becoming more universally recognized; particularly in the manufacture of open-hearth steel, where the life and earning power of the furnace depends largely on the judgment and care exercised in the selection of the correct quality of refractory for each of the parts. Any innovation that would make available to the steel manufacturers refractories with longer life or better suited to their needs than those now employed, and at a cost that would permit of their use, would be of enormous value to the industry at large. It is quite probable that revolutionary changes would not be necessary. Material now used in some parts of the furnace might, by more suitable preparation, be made of much greater service; in other parts, possibly entirely different material would be necessary in order to effect much improvement. Inasmuch as different parts of the furnace structure perform different functions and are subjected to different service conditions, a refractory suitable for one part will be entirely unsuited for another. For this reason, to make a comprehensive study of the refractory requirements of the processes, we should consider the furnace as built up of a number

A brief review is given to show that catastrophic oxidation of stainless steel in the presence of lead oxide is similar in many respects to catastrophic oxidation as caused by MoO3 and V2O5, Experimental data are presented to show that lead oxide accelerates the normal oxidation process of stainless steel by chemically altering the normally protective oxide film formed on the base metal. Data are given to show that similar reactions occur during oxidation of stainless steel in the presence of MOO3,and V2O5. THE mechanism by which pure metals oxidize at high temperatures has been the subject of intensive research for many years and much has been accomplished towards understanding the processes involved. The mechanisms by which alloys oxidize have also been investigated, but due partly to the fewer number of investigations and partly to the complexity of the oxide systems present, available knowledge is not as extensive as with pure metals. When oxidation processes are further complicated by atmospheres contaminated with sulfide, halide, or oxide vapors, the knowledge of fundamentals becomes meager or altogether lacking. Thus, it is not surprising to find that the catastrophic oxidation of stainless steels in metal oxide vapors of MOO, and V2O5 is not a well understood phenomenon despite the fact that a number of investigations have been undertaken. The literature in dealing with the subject of catastrophic oxidation is primarily concerned with the effects of MOO3 and V2O5, but does mention that other metal oxide vapors, one of which is lead oxide, appear to promote a similar type of accelerated oxidation. While this latter effect is virtually unknown, the deleterious effect of lead oxide is of considerable commercial importance, as it is believed to be one of the fundamental reasons for exhaust-valve failure in gasoline engines. For this reason studies have been in progress for many years attempting to better understand the mechanism involved. Modern exhaust-valve alloys"2containing 20 to 25 pct Cr plus nickel and/or manganese are in effect high-grade austenitic stainless steels exhibiting ex- cellent oxidation resistance in air at exhaust valve operating temperatures of 1100° to 1700°F; yet these same alloys are prone to corrode during engine service because of the conditions attending their operation. These conditions are such that the valves become coated with deposits of complex lead compounds mainly derived from gasoline additives of tetraethyllead, ethylene dibromide, and ethylene dichloride. Literature searches3-7 and discussions with various investigators show that considerable difference of opinion exists as to the nature of the lead-bearing deposits found on the surface of exhaust valves and the atmospheres to which they are subjected; yet, all seem to generally agree that corrosion, a gradual transformation of alloy to nonmetallic products of corrosion, is a consequence of the presence of lead compounds. This majority opinion seems to be substantiated by laboratory engine tests which show that corrosion does not occur to any appreciable extent when lead-free fuels are used. The first observations of catastrophic oxidation reported in the literature were probably made by pfeil,8 but it was Leslie and Fontana9 who undertook the first detailed study of the phenomenon. Their work was chiefly centered on the acceleration of oxidation which took place when stainless steels containing more than 3 pct Mo were heated in air with restricted circulation. These investigators reported that the presence of other oxides near the surface would further accelerate the rapid oxidation which occurred. While they recognized that the effect was attributable to the presence of molybdenum, it was Rathenau and Meijering" who emphasized the fact that the presence of molybdenum in the alloy was incidental to the presence of MOO3 vapor in the atmosphere surrounding the specimens. UNDER the stimulus of war psychology the American public has grown confused and jittery in its thinking on the subject of this nation's petroleum resources. This confusion arises from the failure of the average citizen, and even of many leaders in government, in our armed forces, and in the petroleum industry itself, to distinguish between our proved reserves of petroleum in the several oil-producing states and the total petroleum re- sources available to this nation. Leaders and public alike examine the accepted estimates of our proved reserves and thoughtlessly conclude that these estimates represent the total of our petroleum resources. Our fears are aggravated if we turn to the statistics on oil-finding and observe that the discovery of new reserves has waned decidedly in recent years. This confusion is dangerous because, under its influence, ill - considered policies spring up and flourish, choking out the most valuable fruits of the long experience of the American petroleum industry.

AMERICAN consumption of industrial diamonds has increased five fold in the past 25 years and today accounts for 15 to 20 percent of the world's sale of rough diamonds. In another decade the value of industrial diamonds sold may well equal or exceed that of gemstones. It is generally understood that industrial diamonds are one of the strategic minerals being stocked by the Government in the present crisis to ensure rapid and efficient armament production. Diamond die making is a trade largely confined to artisans in Switzerland and in certain parts of France. Today, in addition to turning out pilots, we should train expert artisans in diamond die making, for thousands of miles of tremendously small-gauge wire will be needed to make the instruments by which the efficiency and safety of these pilots is assisted.

This paper describe; open pit studies where blasting damage introduced in the remaining rock has been investigated. Results from two open pit mines are described and discussed. Parallel performed laboratory experiments, where simulated blasting damage has been introduced into samples before shear strength testing took place, are also reviewed. These studies are tied together in order to throw some light upon how the blasting damage influences the slope stability. A mathematical model is also described which will make it possible to optimize the blast design for a specified damage zone in the rock mass.

The dry cleaning of coal is a relatively new art and, as might have been expected, a number of unforeseen problems have been brought to light in the few years that dry methods of treatment have been in commercial use. The pneumatic concentrators that were first adapted to the cleaning of coal had already been developed to a fair degree of efficiency, although at low ratings, in the field of ore dressing. The concentrating machines, therefore, were in a relatively more perfected state than the general technology of dry cleaning and, for this reason, the major difficulties encountered in the early plants were in the accessory operations involved in the servicing of the cleaners rather than in the functioning of the cleaners themselves. The crudities of a new technology were further aggravated, in some cases, by meagerness of appropriations which precluded even the provision of adequate storage bins and such other facilities as had been long recognized as indispensable to the proper functioning of older types of cleaning plants. The practice of dry cleaning is now sufficiently established so that we may examine critically auxiliary equipment and operations. The cleaning processes have been so simplified, with respect to presizing of the raw coal required and the quantity of air circulated, that stinting of expenditures for auxiliary equipment is not necessary to keep the per ton cost of installation in line with complete and well designed plants of other types. Furthermore, sufficient operating experience has been accumulated to ascertain the conditions most conducive to effective operation of dry-cleaning machines; at least the essentials of a definite technology of dry cleaning has been established. Early Operating Problems The problems that have occupied the builders and operators of dry-cleaning plants from the beginning have been relatively few, but difficult of solution. The principal difficulties have been: 1. The proper sizing of the raw coal to suit the cleaning process. 2. The handling of raw coal when it is delivered wet from the mine. 3. Dust collecting. 4. The maintenance of uniformity in cleaning performance.

The Pennsylvania Legislature, on March 13, 1837, passed an act authorizing the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co. to construct a railway to connect the North Branch Division of the Pennsylvania Canal with the slack water navigation of the Lehigh River; the navigation company accepted this act on May 10, 1837. Edwin A. Douglas, chief engineer for the navigation company, located the route for this railway from White Haven to Wilkes-Barre, which was called the Lehigh & Susquehanna Railroad. The object was to transport coal from the Wyoming Valley, of Pennsylvania, to the Atlantic seaboard. This railway was considered a marvelous piece of engineering, as it included a tunnel nearly 55 mi. long, and a series of inclines, or planes, up which the cars laden with coal were raised from the vicinity of Ashley to the summit of the mountain near Solomon's Gap, whence they were taken to White Haven by rail. There the coal was transferred to canal boats. In June, 1862, floods almost completely destroyed the upper division of the canal, so on March 4, 1863, the Pennsylvania Legislature passed an act prohibiting its restoration, but granted a charter for the construction of a railway from White Haven to Mauch Chunk to connect with the line from White Haven to Wilkes-Barre, previously built. On March 16, 1864, a supplementary act was passed extending the Lehigh & Susquehanna Railroad to Easton, Pa. This completed a direct all-rail route from Wilkes-Barre to the New York harbor (by way of the Central Railroad of New Jersey). Up to this time, all freight and passenger traffic passed over the planes, but in 1866 and 1867 there was constructed what was known as the "back track" down the mountain side between Solomon's Gap and Ashley over which all the passenger traffic and empty cars thereafter passed; it is now known as part of the main line. For the handling of the heavy coal traffic, however, this would have involved a continuous climb from Ashley, 170.27 mi., from New York, to Solomon's Gap, 157.8 mi. from New York, or a distance of 12.47 mi., and a total ascent of 1013.75 ft., composed of grades 95.61, 83, and 51.4 ft. per mi., respectively, and
