AT first sight, the platinum group of metals seem of little import to we, the people," although actually the life of the common man is much influenced by them; this influence is usually indirect, hence his lack of knowledge and interest. He generally associates platinum with high-class jewelry and lets it go at that. Were 11e to go deeper, he would find that platinum metals play their part in his food supply, his clothing. his health, his transportation, his home. And the technical man is in general only slightly better informed, for he usually does not realize how necessary platinum metals are in the manufacture of the many construction materials and chemical products with which he is acquainted. Certainly, our daily lives would be profoundly affected if platinum were suddenly to become unavailable.

ANY thought of Morenci naturally includes its sister town of Clifton, its gateway to the outside world. Clifton, the country seat of Greenlee County, is the terminus of a branch line of the Southern Pacific railroad from Lordsburg, N.M. Carload freight incident to the Morenci operation moves from Clifton over Phelps Dodge?s standard-gauge industrial railroad. Private freight must be hauled by truck. These two communities fell far short of supplying adequate housing for the personnel concerned with the new operations so a new townsite, Stargo, was developed adjacent to Morenci. Here 234 housing units with garages have been built and twenty similar units have been erected near the reduction works.

However, it is conceivable that their use in many places will effect a material conservation of tin. It will probably be wiser to use cadmium in solders where good results have been obtained than in brass where this element will be a source of possible trouble. F. F. Colcord,* New York, N. Y.-—The cadmium-lead solder has a higher conductivity than the lead-tin alloy, which ought to make it advantageous in the manufacture of electrical machinery. In the case of solder for tin-can work, one of the high officials of the American Can Co. said that he fully intended to .give it a good trial, and I do not believe they are going to reach hasty conclusions and run the risk of poisoning the public. Solder, Its Use and Abuse Milton L. LissbeRgeR,† New York, N. Y.—Solder is a mechanical mixture of tin and lead, a fact which is susceptible of very simple demonstration. A bar of solder of a grade even as low as 30 per cent. tin and 70 per cent. lead, passed through a buffing machine, will show a surface practically identical with that of a bar of second-quality or reclaimed tin. The buffings, on chemical analysis, will prove to be almost pure lead. According to the best practice, solder is made in the following manner. Virgin pig lead is first melted, and when it is thoroughly liquefied, virgin pig tin is added, together with a small amount of flux; the latter is for the purpose of bringing to the surface the so-called "liver," consisting of impurities that may have remained in either the lead or the tin as a result of incomplete refining. The combined material, when completely liquid, is thoroughly stirred for some hours, and is then cast into small pigs. Just before casting, and continuously during this operation, the molten metal yields dross, consisting largely of the oxides of lead and tin; this should be carefully skimmed off. After the pigs have cooled, they are taken to a smaller kettle, re-melted, and cast into the desired shape for use; or if wires, ribbons, etc., are to be made, the solder is cast into slugs suitable for extrusion and rolling. During this second operation, the skimming of dross should be even more carefully done than at first. Hand mixing has proved to be the only reliable method for the production of the best quality of solder, irrespective of its percentages of lead and tin. Using an expression for the free energy of a homogeneous phase as a function of composition, a relationship is derived which interrelates the phase boundaries extending from the allotropic transformation of the solvent metal. Comparisons between observed and calculated phase boundaries in the systems Fe-Ni, Fe-Mn, Fe-W, Ti-Mo, and Ti-Cb are presented. IT is the purpose of this paper to illustrate how the general free energy equations for two phases in equilibrium may be used to derive an expression which interrelates the phase boundaries extending from the allotropic transformation of the solvent metal. The free energy per gram atom of a disordered solid solution may, for many purposes, be represented by the equation:' F = ½NZ [C-V,, + (1-C) VbB + 2C (l-C)V] + K(T) +RT[C-lnC+ (l-C)ln(l-C) ] [1] where N is Avogadro's number; Z, the coordination number; C, the concentration of the solute element in atomic percent; the subscripts refer to concentrations at phase mixture boundaries; VAA, VBB, and V,, are the bond energies between like and unlike adjacent atoms, respectively, at the interatomic spacing characteristic of the phase. The bond energies are usually assumed to be independent of small changes in the lattice parameter occasioned by solute additions and variations in temperature; V = VAB ---------------—— ; K(T) is the sum of the heat con- tent and heat entropy; R, the molar gas constant; and T, the temperature in degrees Kelvin. The free energy of a homogeneous phase is there- fore the sum of an internal energy, a specific heat, and a configurational entropy term, respectively. The compositions of two phases in equilibrium at a given temperature are governed by the minimum total free energy principle. Graphically, this is represented by the points of tangency of the tangent common to the free energy vs. concentration curves of the two phases. THE book covers principally the assaying of silver and gold and the determination of these values in ores, sweepings, and base metal. It seems to have been written more for the goldsmith and jeweler than for the primary producer of metals. There were approximately sixty different substances needed in the operations described and not over a dozen different types of raw material (ore, matte, crude or alloyed metal) are mentioned. The methods of separation used were essentially simple and reasonably reliable, though the processes were not sufficiently understood to permit the selection of the simplest effective ingredients, and there was a great tendency to employ complicated fluxes, with unnecessary repetition of long-continued heatings indicative of a leisurely pace of life. Practically all the processes described are based on a few chemical facts: the inability of gold to combine with sulphur, while silver and the base metals form easily fusible sulphides; the ready oxidation of base metals; and the ii- solubility of gold in nitric acid. Fluxes serve to make earthy impurities fusible, and to carry oxidizing or sulphurizing ingredients. Many of the processes of assaying had changed little up to the beginning of the present century. Even as late as 1924, when the writer took a University course in fire assaying, the crucibles, cupels, scorifiers, molds, and tongs were identical with those of the sixteenth century, though the wind furnace had a stack on it and the muffle for cupelling was gas-fired.* The fluxes were purer, but of the same essential composition. Following closely Marcona Corp.'s announcement of its new Marconaflo process for transporting mineral slurries by ship (see pp. 96-97, Sept. 1969 [ ]), Midland-Ross Corp. (M-R) now heralds its metallized iron pellet process which supplements Oregon Steel Mills1 (Oregon Steel) new Portland, Ore., plant. Harry J. Bolwell, president of M-R describes the company's M-R Pellet as "the most exciting advance in steelmaking in a decade, one which will profoundly affect the industry." In fact, other knowledgeable industry spokesmen believe that with these developments the mini-steel plant era is now here and that this technical development along with the Marconaflo process will revolutionize iron ore shipments and steelmaking. The M-R president predicts that electric furnaces can account for 20% of the annual U.S. steel production by 1975, compared with 14% at the present time because of these developments.

On the basis of microscopic studies, melting-point observations, and X-ray analyses, a phase diagram is proposed for the Cb-V system. A complete series of solid solutions is formed with a minimum in the solidus at 1810°C near 35 wt pct Cb. No compounds or intermediate phases were found in the system above 650°C. THERE is an ever increasing need for better structural metals and alloys for use in nuclear reactors. In addition to the normal properties of engineering structural materials, such as high temperature strength, resistance to corrosion, and fabric-abil~ty, the nuclear properties of the material must be considered. In a nuclear reactor it is important to conserve neutrons, so a material which removes these neutrons from the reaction excessively is considered to have unfavorable nuclear properties. In nuclear-reactor design the engineer must have nuclear as well as other data available on alloys in order to make a wise selection of materials. Due to the fact that many of the common structural materials have undesirable nuclear properties, it is vital that new alloys of metals having more favorable nuclear properties be investigated. Columbium and vanadium are both high melting metals, both exhibit resistance to chemical attack, and no great difficulty is encountered in fabricating them into desired shapes. With proper treatment both metals can be cold rolled extensively without failure. In addition they have desirable nuclear properties for certain types of reactors. Therefore, the alloys of columbium and vanadium should be of interest in the atomic energy program. Since an alloy-development program is enhanced by a knowledge of the phase equilibria of the components, this investigation was undertaken to establish the phase diagram for the Cb-V system. According to the Hume-Rothery rules for alloying,' the chemical similarity, crystal structure, and atomic-size factor are favorable for a complete series of solid solutions for this system. Both elements are in the same family of group V of the periodic table and thus are quite similar chemically. The crystal structures of columbium and vanadium are compatible for extensive solid solubility, since both have body-centered-cubic structures. The atomic diameters of columbium and vanadium are 2.85 and 2.62Å, respectively. This difference of slightly more than 8 pct is well within the 15 pct maximum difference allowed for extensive solid solubility. Experimental Procedures Source of Materials: Columbium powder and sheet trimmings were obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. According to the manufacturer the metal contains less than 1 pct impurity. An analysis of the metal showed approximately 1800 ppm C in the powder while the sheet trimmings contained less than 500 ppm C. Spectrographic analysis showed minor amounts of Ca, Cr, Fe, Mn, Si, Ti, V, and Zr in both forms of the columbium. No commercial source of vanadium having the ductility and purity desired was available to the authors at the beginning of this investigation. As a result, all of the vanadium used in this study was prepared by the bomb reduction of vanadium pen-toxide with calcium employing the method reported by Long.' Yields of massive vanadium normally were about 80 pct. Chemical analysis of the vanadium prepared in this manner showed the presence of 200 to 500 ppm N and 800 to 1000 ppm C. Minor amounts of Ca, Fe, Mn, Si, Zr, Cr, and Cb were detected by spectrographic analysis. This vanadium metal was ductile and was cold rolled into 5 mil sheet. Annealing was not necessary during this rolling and the metal retained its cold-rolling characteristic after are-melting. Preparation of Alloys: The Cb-V alloys were prepared by melting pieces of vanadium sheet togethel-with columbium in the form of sheet or pellets of powder. The melting was carried out under argon in conventional arc-melting equipment employing a tungsten electrode and a water-cooled copper crucible. Each alloy was remelted three or four times, inverting the alloy after each melting in order to assure complete mixing. Alloys normally were obtained as round flat disks, weighed approximately 70 grams, and had roughly the shape of a disk 1 1/2 in. in diameter and 1/4 in. thick. Half of each alloy

ONE of the most important developments in the coal industry during 1940 was the continued uptrend in the production of bituminous coal. Estimated production for the year is 450,000,000 tons, with an additional production of anthracite of 50,000,000 tons making a total of approximately 500,000,000 tons. This is an increase of 12.5 per cent over 1939. Despite an estimated decrease of about 3.5 per cent in anthracite production, all of the major coal-producing states had increases in production for 9140. The national defense program, with the consequent increase in industrial activity, undoubtedly had an important effect on the increased demand for coal.

From Rancagua 70 km to the east, situated in the Andes at an elevation of 7000 ft, is the town of Sewell, the location of a millsite. Two and one half km east of Sewell by underground railroad at an elevation of 7500 to 10,000 ft is the Teniente ore-body. The history of El Teniente dates from the eighteenth century, when according to legend a Spanish lieutenant, or teniente, a fugitive from justice, escaped to the Andes and camped at what afterwards became known as the Mineral El Teniente. This man reputedly discovered a vein of high grade copper ore. The first official records date from 1819, when some exploitation was begun, and continue until 1870. The orebody was large and of relatively low grade and was beyond the capabilities of the small groups attempting to operate it. No effort was made to erect a concentrator until William Braden became interested in the property. The Tri-State zinc and lead-mining district is in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, the southeast corner of Kansas and the southwest corner of Missouri. The area throughout which active mining has been conducted is about 45 miles long and about 5 miles wide, extending northeasterly from Commerce, Okla., to Alba, Missouri. Although the lead ores were mined on a very small scale in the vicinity of Joplin, Mo., as early as 1848, nothing of any importance was done in the district until 1870, since when both mining and smelting have been prosecuted with considerable vigor. In the beginning the lead ores only were exploited, but within a few years extensive deposits of zinc ores were found and since that time the production of zinc ore has far exceeded that of lead. Both the surface and mineral rights in Missouri and Kansas were under individual ownership by the time ore was discovered. Although some of these rights were purchased by mining companies, most of the mining has been done under leases covering small areas, usually 40 acres, although in the past many leases were given on much smaller tracts. In Oklahoma most of the mineral land had been alloted by the Government to various Indian tribes and although the title to some of these lands had been acquired by various white men before the discovery of the rich Picher field, the title to most of the land has remained with the Indian tribes and the leasing of the mineral rights has been done by the Federal Government for the benefit of the Indians. The Indian allotments were of 200 acres each and some of the mining leases covered entire allotments, although many leases were granted for only 40 acres or even less. Practically all of the leases granted in the past required the erection of a concentrating plant on each lease, a condition that has had a pronounced effect upon the mining and milling methods of the district, since the apparent ore reserves on each tract were too small to justify large and elaborate mining and milling plants. ANNOUNCEMENT was made in the spring of 1926 that the Boston & Maine R. R. Co. had contracted with the well known German steelmakers, Messrs. Fried Krupp, for the manufacture of 15,000 tons of basic open-hearth steel rails at the Rheinhausen Works, for delivery to Boston, Mass. The manufacture of rails in the United States has for many years been almost a national pride, and as this feeling is chiefly the result of a long-time liberal and consistent patronage of, American rails by American railroads, it is not strange that this somewhat unusual announcement should arouse more than ordinary interest. Since the end of the World War, the importation of foreign rail has been fairly large, principally because the newly created economic conditions have rendered some American competition more difficult, but the tonnage imported, for the most part, has been made up of small orders for miscellaneous use; and the contract referred to constitutes the largest single importation of foreign rail in over ten years. In 1915, the Algoma Steel Co. of Sault Ste. Marie, Canada; supplied the Illinois Central R. R. with 30,000 tons of rails,1 and various other American roads with smaller amounts. In 1902, 1903 and 1904, large tonnages of rail from abroad were purchased, the Louisville & Nashville R. R. alone obtaining 30;000 tons from German mills. It is the object of this paper, to present, in what is believed to be a new and concise form, figures showing the production and consumption of rails in the United States, and to record some of the testing and inspection results of the recent Krupp rails; also, to direct attention to two quite unique departures from American practice that were regular features of the Krupp process and which are worthy, it is thought, of careful study.

The basic equations for the flow of gases, compressible liquids and incompressible liquids are derived and the full implications of linearising then discussed. Approximate solutions of these equations are obtained by introducing the concept of a disturbed zone around the well, which expands outwards into the reservoir as fluid is produced. Many important and well-established results are deduced in terms of simple functions rather than the infinite series, or numerical solutions normally associated with these problems. The wide range of application of this approach to transient radial flow problems is illustrated with many examples including: gravity drainage of depletion-type reservoirs; multiple well systems; well interference. INTRODUCTION A large number of problems concerning the flow of fluids in oil reservoirs have been solved by both analytical and numerical methods but in almost all cases these solutions have some disadvantages — the analytical ones usually involve rather complex functions (infinite series or infinite integrals) which are difficult to handle, and the numerical ones tend to mask the physical principles underlying the problem. It would seem appropriate, therefore, to try to find approximate analytical solutions to these problems without introducing any further appreciable errors, so that the physical nature of the problem is retained and solutions of comparable accuracy are obtained. One class of problems will be considered in this paper, namely, transient radial flow problems, and it will be shown that approximate analytical solutions of the equations governing radial flow can be obtained, and that these solutions yield comparable results to those calculated numerically and those obtained from "exact" solutions. It will also be shown that the restrictions imposed upon the dependent variable (pressure) are just those which have to be assumed in deriving the usual diffusion-type equations. The method was originally suggested by Guseinov,1 who (a) postulated a disturbed zone in the reservoir, the radius of which increases with time, and (b) replaced the time derivatives in the basic differential equation by its mean value in the disturbed zone. In this paper it is proposed to review the basic theory leading to the equations governing the flow of homogeneous fluids in porous media and to consider the full implications of the approximation introduced in linearising them. The Guseinov-type approximation will then be applied to these equations and the solutions for the flow of compressible and incompressible fluids, and gases in bounded and infinite reservoirs obtained. As an example of the application of this type of approximation, solutions to such problems as production from stratified reservoirs, radial permeability discontinuities; multiple-well systems, and well interference will be given. These solutions agree with many other published results, and in some cases they may be extended to more complex problems without the computational difficulties experienced by other authors. THEORY In order to review the basic theory from a fairly general standpoint it is proposed to limit the idealising assumptions to the minimum necessary for analytical convenience. The assumptions to be made are the following: 1. That the flow is irrotational. 2. That the formation is of constant thickness. 3. Darcy's Law is valid. 4. The formation is saturated with a single homogeneous fluid.

THE practice of fine-grinding is now being so successfully - carried on in some fields, notably in West Australia, and its advisability has been so frequently pointed out' that the matter in this paper is not put forward as being new ; its chief object being to call attention to the importance of fine-grinding in the treatment of comparatively low-grade ores. I have been engaged during the last five years in the cyanide-treatment of ores in the Ohinemuri district (North Island), New Zealand, and I consider that, in the near future, extremely fine-grinding (almost sliming) will become a very important feature of the milling-methods in this field, since it seems absolutely necessary to reduce the most of ores to a very fine state of division if a high extraction is to be obtained; and, in most cases, the extra percentage of saving will leave a good margin above the increased cost of treatment due both to the fine-grinding and to the interest on the capital spent for the grinding-machinery. The average ore of the Ohinemuri field is composed of a quartz-gangue with some calcite, carrying the gold-value in the form of an alloy of gold and silver in about equal proportions, and the silver-value in the form of mixed sulphides of silver, usually associated with a considerable amount of iron pyrites. In the upper levels, the ores are decomposed and carry large quantities of black manganese oxide and some iron oxide, but, as. depth is reached, the decomposed ore gives place to sulphides and, in some mines, rhodonite, manganese silicate, is present in fairly large quantities. PROBABLY the first metallic objects used by man were nickel alloys. In search for flints suitable for the fashioning of their rude tools, our paleolithic ancestors, some 25,000 years ago, quite likely may have come upon some of those heavy, metallic fragments that we now know as meteorites, which consist of an alloy of nickel and iron containing usually from 5 to 15 pct of nickel. Whether paleolithic man ever did discover and use meteoritic fragments, his sketchy records do not actually disclose. We do know, however, that such fragments have been found and used by peoples, particularly the North American Eskimos, for weapons and implements in just the same manner as stones, and prior to any knowledge by those peoples of the reduction of metals from ores. Meteoritic showers were recorded frequently in earliest times and the meteorites often were found and fashioned into useful objects. The ancient Arabic and other myths of "invincible swords fallen from heaven" seem thus to have had a very definite basis in fact, and such weapons, of meteoritic material, have actually been re- covered from archeological excavations. It thus seems probable that meteoric nickel-iron was found and used long before iron was recovered by smelting iron ores (perhaps about 1200 B.C.) and probably even before there was knowledge and use of bronze and gold. MINE FIRES, in the Butte District, have been a source of trouble and expense for the past thirty years, for while the actual fire area in most of the mines has been comparatively small, the handling of the gas has generally been a much larger problem than the actual putting out of the fire. The chief causes of these fires have been: Defective electrical equipment, incendiarism or carelessness, and spontaneous combustion. While fires from the first two causes have been numerous, they have generally been discovered and extinguished before they became very serious. Spontaneous combustion has been the cause of most of the large fires. Sufficient heat has been generated by ground movement, high rock temperatures, and decomposition to set fire to inflammable materials (tarred ropes, canvas, dry timber, manure, and hay) left in the gobs some years ago. Also, the heat resulting from the oxidation of the fine broken sulfide ore is sometimes sufficient to set fire to the timbers. In 1906, a fire was discovered on the 1100-ft. level of the Minnie Healy mine about 400 ft. (122 m.) west of the Minnie Healy shaft, which presumably originated, in one of the upper levels, from spontaneous combustion. The fire was walled off by concrete bulkheads and a pillar of ground 100 ft. (30 m.) thick was left below and mining resumed underneath. During subsequent operations, this pillar became cracked and broken and the fire passed into the new workings. It travelled downward and spread rapidly until, in 1917, it had become necessary to wall off portions of the Tramway, Leonard, and West Colusa mines on the 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1800, 1900, and 2000-ft. levels, and the top of the 2200-ft. raises were sealed. The fire area now consists roughly of a block 1000 by 1200 ft. and from the 600-ft. to the 2200-ft. level. This block is composed largely of a series of parallel northwest-southeast nearly vertical veins and stringers that form a large orebody, with no well-defined walls but badly fractured and faulted, and known locally as "Horsetail Ore." These veins, or orebodies, are mined by the square-set or the rill method.

Discussion of the paper of THOMAS F. DONNELLY, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1759 to 1768. F. LYNWOOD GARRISON, Philadelphia, Pa. (communication to the Secretary *).-The paper is of value in giving the public some first-hand information regarding a copper property that from various causes has attracted considerable attention, especially in Philadelphia, and which has also been the source of several fantastic flotations that had little to recommend them. Since 1906, no work has been done on this property under my direction, with the exception of a topographic survey made last winter by Mr. Donnelly, which was intended as the first step in a sound and logical system of development. From 1906 to 1915, desultory attempts were made to develop these orebodies, but as the work was not in competent hands much money was wasted and even more disappeared in ways regarding which it is perhaps not best to inquire. The result is, this interesting property has now practically no more ore developed upon it than in 1906, despite the fact that a new 100-ton mill is being erected, although, as I have intimated, it is today not much more than a prospect. Turning now to the scientific and more agreeable side of the subject, it is interesting to note that these Santo Domingo copper ores are invariably found in volcanic tuffs and that, in a geologic sense, they are all very old, for there are no evidences of recent volcanic activity in the greater Antilles, of which this island is the second largest. The existence of copper in tuffs in different parts of the world is a notable fact. Often, if not usually, it is present in mere traces, but not infrequently we find it in sufficient amount to be of economic importance. Thus, for example, chalcopyrite and bornite occur in the Tertiary tuffs of Japan, and a number of producing copper mines of that country are either actually in, or closely associated with, rocks of this character. Whether the copper minerals are original primary ores in the tuffs, or were derived from accompanying eruptive dikes, appears not yet to have been determined in any instance. In most of the Japanese cases of which I can find any record the tuffs appear to be associated with shales and limestones. These Japanese copper ores also carry some gold, especially in the upper parts of the veins; in this they resemble the Santo Domingo deposits which not infrequently carry as much as $6 or $7 per ton of gold on the outcrop.
