(Presented at the Washington meeting, May 3, 1905, and simultaneously sent to the Iron and Steel Institute, for presentation at the meeting of that Society in London, May 11, 1906.) It is to be regretted that the data respecting the use of dry-air blast, which were presented to the Iron and Steel Institute at its meeting in the United States, in October, 1904, should have been restricted to the period from August 25th to September 9th inclusive, and from September 17th to 30th inclusive. In order to present the paper at all it was found necessary to limit the record of operations to the period above stated. It appears from the reported discussion that some of those who took part felt themselves to be at a disadvantage, in considering the economies secured through the use of dry-air blast, by reason of the fact that the data presented covered so short a period. It is the purpose of this communication to present in detail the record of operations of the Isabella Furnaces from November, 1904, to March, 1905, inclusive, as shown by the furnace-records. The month of October, 1904, is not included, as the furnace using dry-air blast was stopped several times for repairs; and while the record was a very good one considering these interruptions, yet it was not a continuous one. The record for Furnace No. 1 using dry-air blast, and the comparison with Furnace No. 3 using natural air for the month of November, 1904, is set forth in Table I. By a reference to my former paper it will be noted that the month of November is the beginning in this country of the winter period, when the atmosphere decreases rapidly in humidity. The month of October being the transition month in the autumn and April in the spring, and furnaces using natu-ral air approach more closely, from November on, to the conditions obtained by the use of dry-air blast. An error lzas been found in the conventional way of determining the time exponent of linear shrinkage for the solution-precipitation stage of liquid-phase sintering. Large amounts of shrinkage due to initial rearrangenzent result in erroneously low exponents and tni si dentification of the rate-controlling process. Two alternative, mathematically correct, methods of calculation are applied to existing data on Fe-Cu, WC-Co, and Tic-Ni-Mo. This results in reidentifi-cation of the rate-controlling process and somewhat better agreement with related data. In each case the solution-precipitation process is solution-controlled and not diffusion-controlled. THE liquid-phase sintering process has been the object of a considerable amount of research for many years. Linear shrinkage vs time data at various sintering temperatures have been used recently in an attempt to identify the prevailing mass-transport processes in a number of metallic and nonmetallic systems. There is an analytical error inherent in the methods previously used for handling data during the "solution-precipitation" stage of shrinkage which must be recognized before the correct rate-controlling processes can be determined. It is the purpose of this paper to show how the error has affected previous conclusions and to suggest corrections. A number of mechanisms have been proposed to explain experimental observations during sintering in the presence of a liquid phase. The earliest of these is due to Price, Smithells, and williamsl who attributed the observed growth of the solid phase to the simultaneous solution of smaller particles and growth of larger particles. From the work of Lenel et al.2,3 and Gurland and Norton4 has come the suggestion that the liquid-phase sintering process may be divided for analysis into three steps: 1) rearrangement upon formation of the liquid phase; 2) solution and reprecipitation of the solid phase in the liquid; and 3) "coalescence" or a final stage of sintering, characteristically slower than the solution-precipitation process. The sequence of steps is shown schematically in Fig. 1. Kingery5 presented a thermodynamic and kinetic analysis of the first two "stages" of the liquid-phase sintering process in which the functional dependence of lineal shrink- age on time at temperature was used to identify the rate-controlling mass-transport process. Table I summarizes the time dependences and processes considered by Kingery.5 This method of data presentation has been employed by Kingery and coworkers for Fe-CU,6 WC-Co, and a number of nonmetallic systems," and bv Whalen and Humenik for Tic-Ni-Mo and Fe-cu.8 In each of these studies, the rate-controlling step during the "solution-precipitation" stage was identified from the slope of the curve in that stage on a logarithmic plot such as Fig. 1. However, in all of the previous studies, at a certain composition, relatively large amounts of shrinkage due to rearrangement preceded the solution-precipitation stage. The Zn-Vphase diagram was studied by thermal. metallographic, X-ray, and sampling techniques. Three ternary phase equilibria were observed: Mutual solid solubilities in vanadium and zinc appear to be negligible. The liquidus line is retrograde from 670° to 756°C. 1 HE only information in the literature relating to the Zn-V system was a study of corrosion of vanadium by liquid zinc' and an examination of the effectiveness of zinc coatings in protecting vanadium-base alloys from oxidation at high temperatures.2 Establishment of the Zn-V phase diagram was undertaken as part of a study of transition metal solubilities in liquid metal solvents. Chemical, metallographic, thermal, and X-ray diffraction analyses were used to determine the diagram. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Vanadium (99.86 pct) in the form of powder and small chips was employed. Stick zinc (99.99 pct; major impurities: 10 to 15 ppm Pb and 20 ppm Cu) was used in the liquidus determinations and thermal analyses; zinc powder (98.80 pct) was used to prepare intermediate compositions. The liquidus lines were determined by chemical analysis of filtered samples of the saturated melts. The apparatus and sampling techniques were similar to those described by Martin, et al.3 The entire metal sample was dissolved to preclude analytical errors due to segregation on cooling. Vanadium was determined amperometrically, using iron (11) as the titrant,4 to an estimated accuracy of 1 pct. Standard techniques of thermal analysis were employed to examine alloy specimens contained in alumina crucibles under helium. Heating and cooling rates were about 1°C per min. At least five heating and cooling cycles over the range 420° to 700°C were performed for each of two Zn-15 pct V alloys. A Zn-0.2 pct V alloy was used in the determination of the eutectic temperature. The separation of intermediate phases from zinc-rich alloys was carried out by selective leaching with ammonium nitrate solutions. For further investigation of intermediate phases 1/4 in. diam powder compacts were prepared by pressing at 80,000 psi and were annealed in argon at 415" to 450°C for 10 days. Larger quantities of intermediate phases were prepared in sealed tantalum capsules heated in a rocking furnace. THE Seventh International Petroleum Exposition and Congress to be held in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 4 to 11, inclusive, in true western spirit promises to be bigger and better than ever. The Exposition has become an established institution. It gives opportunity to petroleum engineers, technologists, and operators to see each year at one place what the tool makers and machinery manufacturers have to offer which is new or better. It has truly become a place "where men, methods and machinery meet." It is also a convenient focus for technical meetings of various kinds devoted to petroleum and natural gas problems. 'The Petroleum Division of the A. I. M. E. has for several years held its chief fall meeting at Tulsa just preceding the opening of the Es- position. This year our meeting will be on Oct. 2 and 3 and it will be held as usual at Hotel Mayo. The Mid- Continent Oil and Gas Association will, as usual, hold a meeting during the Exposition and this year the Petroleum Division of the A. S. M. E. will hold a three- day session, Oct. 6-8, in the auditorium on the Esposition grounds. In all, six technical sessions are planned by this Society, and aside from reports of committees some 20 technical papers are to be presented. Members of the Institute should attend its own meeting and stay over for as many days as possible for the other meeting at which they will hear and see much of helpful interest.

Using X-ray pole-figure information and the single-crystal elastic constants, the angular variation of an elastic modulus in a polycrystal can be calculated and compared to measured clalues. This procedure has been used in the past to provide supporting ecidence for a particular choice of ideal orientations in the description o the X-ray pole figure. Since it is well-known that the absolute value oj an elastic modlus oj a poly crystal cannot be acczrralely calculated from the single-crystal elastic constants, there exists a serious question about the reliability oj this modulus method in the study of textures. The vesults show that, although the absolute isallre oj Young's modulus depends strongly on the assumptions made, the shape of the modulus vs angle curve is not very sensitive to the assumptions and thus can be used reliably in texture studies. Exatzples oj' using this criteriotz are illustrated in the text. NeARLY all poly crystalline materials have some preferred orientation in the arrangement of their grains and hence exhibit anisotropy in their properties. This preferred orientation is usually measured and studied by X-rays which yield detailed information on the statistical distribution of grain orientations in the form of pole figures. The usefulness of these pole figures in theories of texture formation and in predictions of properties has come to depend almost entirely on the characterization of the pole figure by one or more ideal orientations. Unfortunately, this characterization is not unique and different authors often present different ideal orientations to characterize a given pole figure. In order to distinguish between these different choices of ideal orientations, it is necessary to go beyond X-rays and consider other physical properties which reflect the texture' simply because any choice of ideal orientations must predict correctly the observed anisotropy in all physical properties. The most common example of this procedure has made use of the angular variation of Young's modulus with respect to the rolling direction in the plane of a rolled sheet.3 4 Here the anisotropy can be measured easily and it can also be calculated from the single-crystal elastic constants and the chosen ideal orientation. Unfortunately the methods used to calculate this anisotropy were chosen for their simplicity rather than for their mathematical rigor so that there exists a serious question as to the validity of conclusions reached by this modulus method. It is well-known5 that the absolute value of the Young's modulus of a polycrystalline aggregate cannot be calculated very accurately because different mathematical averages over the grains yield different results. It is one purpose of this paper to examine the effect of different averaging procedures on the calculated anisotropy of Young's modulus in the rolling plane of rolled sheets in order to see if this property can be used reliably in texture studies. This particular modulus and type of material were chosen because the modulus is easily measured and rolled sheet is technologically important. The results show that, although different averages yield different absolute values for Young's modulus, the shape of the modulus vs angle curve is not very sensitive to the averaging procedure and thus can be used as a criterion to check the various ideal orientations used to characterize the X-ray pole figure. Examples of this checking procedure are given in the final section. Another purpose of this paper is to examine the possibility of using the anisotropy of Young's modulus as an indicator of texture without reference to pole figures or ideal orientations. Such a use would require that different textures yield quite different shapes for the modulus vs angle curve so that the distinction between textures would be quite clear. Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) is in the process of evolving a computer-based information system which will process all of the material selected for abstracting in the area of chemistry and chemical engineering and its related fields such as the earth sciences and technologies. This system is already operational to some extent and is expected to be fully utilized by 1971. The objective of CAS is to make chemical and related information more readily available, more usable and more used. Chemical Abstracts handle some 5000 abstracts weekly from 13, 000 journals and patents from 25 nations. These cover all of the 80 CA subject sections which relate to chemistry and also extend into areas of interest to geologists, mineralogists, and mining engineers. In this way, CAS fulfills its objective of complete coverage of its major fields, informative abstracting, and indexing to maximum specificity. The concept of a computer-based information system is that of a single machine-language data base into which the results of intellectual analysis of the literature are entered and from which computer programs produce a variety of publications and services applicable to the needs of a wide range of users.

While remodeling No. 1 section of the concentrator at the Washoe Reduction Works of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. during the summer of 1912, for the purpose of ascertaining what additional metal recoveries could be made by improvements in concentration practice which had been developed by the staff of the Boston & Montana Reduction Department, at Great Falls, it was deemed advisable to carry on some experiments on the treatment of the regular mill tailings by roasting and leaching, to see whether the losses of metal values might not be still further decreased. In the course of these experiments about 5,000 tons of tailings were roasted, and of the resulting calcine about 200 tons were leached. The results were so satisfactory that it was decided to continue the work on a larger scale, particularly as regards the leaching end of the process, and construction work on an 80-ton roasting and leaching plant was accordingly commenced during the latter part of February, 1913, and is being pushed as rapidly as possible. 80-Ton Leaching Plant. This plant will consist of one 20-ft. roasting furnace of the Mac-Dougall type, specially adapted to the work of roasting for leaching; two leaching tanks, 32 ft. in diameter by 12 ft. deep, together with the necessary solution tanks, air lifts, precipitating launders, etc. It has been decided to precipitate the copper from solution on scrap iron, so as not to hamper the roasting and leaching departments by any weakness that might develop in the precipitating department. It is, however, the intention to experiment with a number of different methods of precipitation; for example, by electrolysis and by hydrogen sulphide. The acid required for the operation of this plant will be purchased, ad the quantity required is not sufficient to justify the installation of an acid plant. ANDREW FLETCHER, newly elected Treasurer and Director, has spent his entire mining career in the employ of the St. Joseph Lead Co. and brings to the Institute Board a career rich in financial experience and varied in interest and accomplishment. "Drew" Fletcher was born in New York City on Feb. 6, 1895. After graduating from the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale in 1916 as a mechanical engineer, he became a shipyard mechanic in Wilmington, Del. The next thirteen years saw. him gradually enlarging his responsibilities until he ultimately became the head of the W. & A. Fletcher Co., in Hoboken, N. J., ship repairers. In 1929 his program for merging the Fletcher plant with five other New York shipyards was finally consummated in the formation of the United Dry Docks, Inc., which subsequently was purchased by Bethlehem Steel, with the result that today the old Fletcher yard and organization has been expanded into one of the finest ship repair units in the United States.

Changes in stored energy, resistivity, density, X-ray line broadening, and dislocation arrangements (from transmission electron microscopy) have been mensured on copper specimens shock-loaded at 75 to 435 kbars. The stored energy in shock-loaded copper and changes in density and resistivity are larger than those after conventional deformation. A high density of twins makes an appreciable contribution to all the measured quantities. Dislocation densities rise to values of 1011 lines per sq cm at the highest pressure. The resistivity, density, and X-ray In a study of the effects of shock loading on copper, changes in stored energy, resistivity, density, hardness, lattice parameter, line broadening, and dislocation structure have been examined after subsequent annealing of specimens shocked to various pressures. This paper presents certain aspects of the data, taken by two groups, one at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the other at Northwestern University, and compares the changes in these properties, and what they indicate about the effects of shock deformation. measurements yield dislocation densities in substantial agreement at all pressures, after correcting for the effects due to the twins. At the higher pressures, electron microscopy yields dislocation densities that are lower by a factor of about 5 to 10. Dislocation densities from stored -energy measurements are high; this finding can be rationalized by the consideration that the deformation twin boundaries present are largely incoherent. There is no evidence for homogeneous dislocation nucleation during shock loading. Shock loading any metal or alloy, such as copper, causes a large increase in yield strength, with dimensional changes of the order of only a few percent."' Other properties have not been extensively studied, but this result clearly indicates the importance of examining the substructure. Previous studies of the substructure of conventionally deformed specimens have been made using electron microscopy,3-6 X-ray diffraction,7,8 and etch pitting.9,10 The dislocation density can reach values of about 10" per sq cm; and the dislocations are arranged in cells approximately 0.15 in size. The substructure varies widely, however, from point to point in the specimen. The substructure of explosively loaded copper consists of cells of about the same dimensions6,11 but their size is more uniform.6 Profuse twinning occurs12,13 and the twins are often too small to be detected optically.6,13 The boundaries outlining these twins appear to be incoherent.14 There is now ample evidence 13-15 that twinning is a strengthening mechanism in fcc metals but this is only part of the strengthening effect in shock-loaded copper.* From the twinning systems which operate in shock-loaded single crystals,13 and from changes in texture on shock loading,17 it has been shown that both the

THE Fall Regional Meeting of the Institute, which has now for some years been held in cooperation with the Western Division of the American Mining Congress, will be held this year at Joplin, Mo., in the heart of the great Tri-State district. This year the Tri-State Zinc and Lead Ore Producers Association is joining in the meeting. The Society of Economic Geologists will also take part though not offering any papers. The district in which the meeting is held includes adjacent parts of Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. Out in the heart of a fertile prairie farming country, it is one of the major mining districts of the world. It produces normally approximately one-third of the zinc ore mined in the United States which is equivalent to nearly one-half the zinc since the concentrate has always been notable for the height of its grade. Even in the depressed business year 1930, the American Bureau of Metal Statistics credits the district with 434,460 tons of concentrates equal to 217,230 tons of zinc out of 1,503,095 and 576,630 respectively for the country as a whole. This was equal to about one-seventh of the world's output of zinc, more than that of any foreign country. In addition about 75,000 to 100,000 tons of lead is annually furnished by the same mines. Elsewhere we present a general description of the district prepared for this meeting by J. C. Heilman, a Lehigh graduate, who has spent the past eleven years there and has had charge of explorations for many of the companies.

VANADIUM is generally spoken of as a rare element; but, even in the light of our resources as known a couple of years ago, this description could be accepted in a qualified sense only. In fact, vanadium is very widely distributed, being a constituent of most clays, while even caustic soda has been shown to contain almost regularly a minute proportion of it, although the quantity in each case is so small as to render impracticable the extraction of the metal there from with profit. The opening-up of a large deposit of vanadium sulphide ore in South America has put a new phase on the commercial outlook of vanadium, the technical value of which for the improvement of steel has been proved by rigorous scientific investigation.

IN THE first report1 disks of steel of- known composition and history were exposed, under carefully prescribed conditions, to impacts of explosion products resulting from the explosion of 50-gm. charges of explosives having well-determined rates of detonation, or to, impacts of a weight of known mass, falling through measured distances. There were available at the Bureau of Mines Experiment Station five explosives, having rates of detonation of 5716, 4470, 3190, 2296, and 1523 meters per second. It being desired to continue this exposure downward, and no explosives with a lesser rate of detonation being at hand, resort was had to the impact of a falling weight, the differences in the velocity of impact being attained by varying the height from which the weight was allowed to fall. It was expected by this means to demonstrate experimentally that the development of Neumann bands was determined by the suddenness of the deformation of the metal in which they were produced. But while progressive deformations were obtained with the explosive charges, the falling-weight method failed because the tup was progressively deformed, also the disks were so flattened as to be unfit for metallographic examination. A return, therefore, has been made to the use of explosives as the source of energy, an air-gap being interposed between the charge of explosive and the disk, as the effect diminishes as the function of the distance between the charge and the object on which the products of its explosion, or the shock wave from its detonation, impinge. The details of the arrangement of the tests by the air-gap method were the same as those described by Foley and Howell,2 except that after the system had been set up and the desired apparent specific gravity for the explosive

A 91 kg/h (200 lb per hr) pilot plant was constructed according to "Magnex" design. A non-compliance eastern coal which would generate more than 0.85 kg of SO2 per GJ (2.0 lb of SO2 per million Btu) upon burning was brought into compliance less than 0.52 kg of SO2 per GJ (1.2 lb SO2 per million Btu) during continuous operation of the pilot plant. Approximately 85% of the pyritic sulfur was removed while recovering 90% of the Btu of the feed coal. Pilot plant operation is summarized and preliminary economics presented. Present status of the Magnex design program is reviewed.

THERE has been interest recently in the conditions under which dislocation pipe diffusion may be observed. In order to extend the measurements to temperatures below Tm/2, where pipe diffusion becomes more important, a chemical sectioning technique was developed for silver single crystals which makes possible the removal of layers of 100A or less. The procedure is briefly as follows. Silver single crystals of 99.995 pct purity were cut in the form of discs t by 4 in., electropolished, and electropolated with Ag110 to about 1000A thickness. The thickness was determined by calibrating the activity with the weight of heavier platings, up to 10,000A. Both diffused and undiffused samples were sectioned in a two-step process. Reaction with a solution of iodine in alcohol formed a thin, even layer of AgI, which was then dissolved in a KCN solution. The reaction rate of the iodine solution varied slightly over a period of time, so that the thickness of the stripped layers, while quite even and regular for a given specimen, ranged from 65 to l00W for different specimens. This variation was checked by using a thickly plated standard with each run. Layer thickness was determined from undiffused samples by the point where the layer activity drops to half the maximum. This maximum intensity also provides, with appropriate corrections, the initial concentration per layer co. Because of the small penetration distances, it is necessary to use the exact solution of Fick's law for a source of finite thickness.' For a plating of thick- where c is the concentration at depth x. flj the error function, D the apparent diffusion coefficient, and t the time. The diffusion coefficient was obtained from the concentration-penetration data by extrapolating to x = 0 where c/co = erf h/2(Dt)1/2 Enough points were taken to impart confidence in the accuracy of the intersection, generally about ten layers. Four temperatures were used as in Table I. For best accuracy, t and h were chosen to give values of the parameter (Dt)1/2/h between 1.0 and 1.7. A typical concentration-penetration curve is shown in Fig. 1. The diffusion coefficients calculated from Eq. [I] are plotted in Fig. 2. For comparison, the high-temperature data of Tomizuka and sonder 2 which go down to 630°C are plotted as the solid line 2(a) from their expression D = 0.40 exp (-44,090/RT). Also for comparison, the lowest temperature point of Hoffman and Tumbull3 is plotted. It is apparent that our data diverge appreciably from the high-temperature extrapolation by 373°C. A better straight line fit for the low-temperature portion is obtained by subtracting the extrapolated volume diffusion coefficient from the apparent. or measured coefficient, and plotting the difference, curve (h) of

The direct determination of the stabilized performance behavior of low capacity, slowly stabilizing gas wells is extremely time-consuming and wasteful of gas. From both field experience and theoretical considerations, a test procedure has been evolved by which the stabilized hack pressure behavior of such gas wells can he predicted without having to revert to long time flow tests. The method consists of using the isochrona1 test procedure to establish the slope of the back pressure curve, "n", and the short time variation of the performance coeficient, "C", with time. From this short time transient flow data and theoretical considerations, the value of C at large times can he established. By assuming the radius of drainage of a well to be half the distance between wells, one can calculate the stabilization time for various well spacing patterns. Once the stabilization time for a given .spacing has been determined, the value of C can be calculated and the stabilized back-pressure curve can he. establbrhed. The calculated perfortnance coefficient as a function of tinze was cotnpared to the experintentally measured values for a number of gas wel1.e. The time necessary to obtain this data from well tests varies consitlerably, depending on the physical natrcre oj the rt3scrvoir under consideratiot~. INTRODUCTION For many years, the U. S. Bureau of Mines Monograph 7' has served as a guide for testing and evaluating the performance of gas wells by means of the back-pressure method. The back-pressure performance of a gas well is expressed by the following equation: Q~ CW-W.........(I) where the characteristics of the back-pressure equation are determined by C, the performance coefficient, and n, the exponent which corresponds to the slope of the straight line when Q and {P* - PN2) are plotted on logarithmic paper. Q is gas flow rate at standard conditions, and P, and P, are equalized and flowing bottom-hole pressures, respectively. Prior to the development of the back-pressure tcst, the "open flow" capacity method of testing a well was common. By this method, the wells were flowed wide open to the air and the flow rate measured. Such procedure was wasteful of gas and did not provide information on the deliverability of the gas to the pipe line. Monograph 7 Procedure The back-pressure method of testing wells was developed to overcome these shortcomings. Although much has been learned regarding the laws of the flow of gas through porous formations, the original development of the back-pressure relationship was based entirely on empirical methods. The back-pressure behavior provides the engineer with information essential in predicting the future development of a field. It permits him to calculate the deliverability of gas into a pipe line at predetermined line pressures, to design and analyze gas gathering lines, to determine the spacing and number of wells to he drilled during the development of a field to meet gas purchasers' requirements, and to solve many other technical and economic problems. As described in Monograph 7, the flow-after-flow method of back-pressure testing, when applied to fast stabilizing and usually high capacity wells, correctly characterized the behavior of the well. However, as the value of the gas at the wellhead increased, small capacity gas wells having slow rates of stabilization became economically operable. The flow-after-flow method of testing could not be used to describe the behavior of these slowly stabilizing wells. The procedure of Rawlins and Shellhardtl for establishing the back-pressure behavior of a gas well was based on the rcquirement that the data be obtained under stabilized flow conditions; that is, that C is constant and does not vary with time. C depends on the physical properties of the reservoir, the location, extent and geometry of the drainage radius, and the properties of the flowing fluid. In a highly permeable formation, only a very short period of time is required for the well to reach a stabilized condition, and, consequently, the requirements for the test procedure described in Monograph 7 are met. The solidifzcation reactions in the Cu-Sn-As system were determined by microscopic examination, thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The system presents no ternary compound. There is a quasi-binary section, of a simple eutectic type, between the compounds Cu5As2 and SnAs; the system presents, in addition, one ternary eutectic reaction, one ternary peritectic reaction, and seven transitional reactions. The temp-peratures corresponding to each of these reactions were determined, most of them with an accuracy of *lLC. The isothermal lines of the liquidus surface were also established for almost the entire diagram. NO reference was found in the literature relative to the Cu-Sn-As phase diagram and this is believed to be the first study on this subject. The Cu-Sn diagram was taken from Hansen and Anderko;' it is represented by Fig. 1, with the phase designation which will be used in the remainder of this work. For the Cu-As diagram, the solution proposed by Hansen and ~nderko' must be modified to take account of recent data, principally from Heyding and Despault~ and from Hume-Rothery and Burns; this yields the diagram represented by Fig. 2. As for the Sn-As diagram, it is not established with certainty, particularly so far as concerns the solid solubility of tin in arsenic and the solidification reactions near the compound SnsAsz. For this last point, Hansen and Anderko propose two solutions: congruent melting of Sn3Asz with a eutectic SnsAsZ + SnAs or incongruent melting implying a peri-tectic reaction L + SnAs = Sn3As2. Microscopic examination of the few binary alloys prepared in this composition range made us prefer the second of these solutions, which gives the diagram shown by Fig. 3. Almost beyond doubt, the most important contribution to the assaying of copper yet made, is that of Mr. Eustis (Bans., xi., 120) on the " Comparison of Various Methods of Copper Analysis," which indicates in a manner for which the assayer cannot but feel grateful, how a copper sample ought to be treated from the moment it enters the laboratory until the copper is finally weighed. Admitting, as the present writer is inclined to do, that this paper establishes, as the official standard, the method of electrolysis, we may note as one of the few details which it does not finally fix, the kind of battery most desirable for precipitating the copper upon platinum. In this respect each assayer appears to be a law unto himself, while all feel more or less " shaky " as to the results. Classsen seems to suggest a remedy when he directs the measuring of the -gases liberated by the battery employed. But, in fact, that measure is not a constant in the Bunsen elements which he prescribes for copper determination. Furthermore, measuring gases necessitates more machinery and labor than the average assayer has a stomach for. It is, however, but just to Classen, to whom we owe so much, to reeall that he wrote more especially for students in the schools.

AT the December Board meeting, the report of the William Lawrence Saunders Medal Committee, recommending the award of the medal to John Hays Hammond, was received and unanimously approved. The citation is: "For his notable work as an engineer and developer of mines at home and abroad, his industrial leadership and his public services." The medal will be presented as usual during the meeting in February, presumably at the annual dinner at the Waldorf, on Feb. 20. The other medals to be given on the same occasion are the James Douglas, which goes to Paul D. Merica, and the Robert W. Hunt, which is awarded this year to Edgar C. Bain, as already announced. This will be the third award made of the Saunders Medal for "Achievement in Mining," previous recipients having been David W. Brunton in 1927, and Herbert Hoover in 1928. The list is a distinguished one and Mr. Hammond's name is appropriately included. His career is so widely known that it is not necessary to repeat the account, published in MINING AND METALLURGY last April.

ABOUT three miles west of Fontana San Bernardino County, California, and fifty miles east of Los Angeles, the Kaiser Co., Inc., has built an integrated steel plant. By integrated, I mean that from its wholly owned iron ore and coal supply, the Kaiser Co. is producing in its own mills iron and steel products. Pig iron to meet the West Coast needs has been produced at Fontana since Jan. 1, 1943; steel ingots were first poured there May 14, 1943; and steel plate for ships was first rolled Aug. 15, just sixteen months after ground was broken. Briefly, the plant consists of: (I) Two batteries of by-product coke ovens, totalling ninety ovens, carbonizing about 1740 tons of coal per day at capacity; with by-product facilities for the production of tar, ammonia, and ammonium suIphate, light oil distillates, and tar distillates. While the occurrence of phosphorus in coking-coal has assumed less importance with the development of the opeu-hearth method of steel-making, it may not be without interest to note the form in which phosphorus exists in one particular coal-seam. In the examination of what is known as the Big seam, which outcrops a few miles west of Columbiana, Ala., my attention was called to the distribution through the coal, in the form of minute veins and particles, of a resinous-looking substance. A small amount of this was selected, and was provisionally identified as evansite (Al6 Y2 O14, 18 Aq). Subsequently, through the courtesy of Dr. J. Sharshall Grasty, of the Geological Department of the University of Virginia, I was able to secure an additional amount of material, which was purified down to about 0.3 g. This was examined by Prof. John J. Porter, of the University of Cincinnati, and gave the following partial analysis: Per Cent. Loss on ignition,......... 37.43 Phosphoric anhydride,..10.33 Alumina,..........36.33 There was also a trace of silica, and quite a considerable quantity of lime and magnesia. Professor Porter was led to think that the material was not pure, but a mixture of several of the phosphates of aluminum carrying lime and magnesia. The material available did not permit of the convenient determination of the other ingredients. One form in which phosphorus occurs in coal is evidently as a hydrated phosphate of aluminum; and any coal which shows to the eye the occurrence of a light-colored resinous-looking material should be looked on with suspicion as being high in phosphorus.
