This paper presents a review of the technologies which have been used in the application of III-V compound semiconductors to integrated circuits and arrays. These materials have properties which make them useful for various devices such as: light emitters, sensors, microwave sources, and microwave diodes. Technologies for incorporating these devices into integrated circuits have been reported and processes developed for fabricating planar devices using selective epitaxial deposition or selective diffusions. Isolation methods utilizing semi-insulating GaAs, oxide isolation, and ceramic insulation have also been reported. These techniques, and the devices and circuits produced or proposed are discussed. AFTER the invention of the silicon-integrated circuit, methods for utilizing compound semiconductors for integrated circuit applications were proposed. The scope of applications was potentially much broader because of the range of properties available from these materials. There also was the opportunity of coupling these properties with germanium and silicon devices to realize functions and circuits which could not be produced with silicon monolithic circuits. Table I exemplifies the range of electrical properties available in III-V compound semiconductor materials which are currently being widely used. A wide range of sensor and emitter applications result from the range of band gap. The band structure of GaAs and GaAsxP1-x permits their use as microwave oscillator source, and the high electron mobilities further facilitate their utility in microwave devices. The concept of "integrated functions"1 results from the availability of these materials and methods for utilizing their special properties. Heteroepitaxial growth allows the fabrication of a monolithic block of these materials. Semi-insulating GaAs permits the attainment of electrical isolation between components in a monolithic block without resorting to p-n junction biasing or oxide isolation methods. An "integrated function" is a unit which can perform a system or subsystem role and perform a number of electromagnetic functions. These functions could include sensor or input transducer, signal processing, interconnections, and control or output function. Two examples which demonstrate this concept are an optoelectric processor and a microwave receiver front end. The optoelectronic processor, Fig. 1(a), would consist of a light sensor, signal processor, and output emitter. The sensor could be InSb or InAs which would be IR-sensitive. The signal from this sensor would then be amplified and transmitted to the light emitter. The amplifier could utilize GaAs bipolar or field effect transistors. A Gap emitter would then produce visible radiation. The microwave receiver front end, Fig. l(b), would consist of a local oscillator section and a mixer section. A signal input from an antenna is mixed with the signal from the local oscillator. The local oscillator signal is produced by a Gunn oscillator. The single-ended mixer utilizes one Schottky barrier mixer diode. The IF signal would then be amplified further and suitably displayed. A further extension of the capability of utilizing the

MY remarks will be confined to the experience of our company in mining the No. 8 seam of coal in Ohio, although I believe that the relationship existing here between the method of mining and the method of cleaning will hold true in many of the coal seams throughout the country. The increasing demand for a cleaner and better graded product is being felt throughout the entire coal industry, and the methods of mining are playing an important part in the control of various sizes and quality of coal produced. We have found a definite relation between the mechanical loading of coal and its preparation for the market. In the No. 8 coal seam the location of the non-combustible material is regular. The' marketable coal lies in three benches, separated by streaks or bands of impurities. These impurities must be removed from the coal to properly pre pare the product for the market. Where hand-loading methods are employed, the loader removes as much of this non-combustible material as possible at the working face. The impurities that are missed by the loaders are removed as the coal passes through the preparation plant, by means of picking tables. As this method of cleaning cannot improve the quality of the extremely fine sizes, a practice has been established in the company's hand-loading mines, of undercutting the coal about 2 in. above the bottom of the seam, thereby eliminating any possibility of impurities caused by the cutting machines cutting into the rock bottom below the coal seam.

The Ti-C phase diagram exhibits a peritectic point at 1750°C and 0.8 pct C, and a peritectoid point at 920°C and 0.48 pct C. The maximum solubility of carbon in a titanium is 0.48 pct. The 6 region containing the Tic compound (20 pct C) extends to 11 pct C at the peritectic temperature. THE interest in the Ti-C alloy system stems from the fact that carbon occurs as an impurity in titanium alloys when graphite electrodes or graphite crucibles are used in their melting. Since titanium-base alloys are still in the development stage, some virtue may be found in carbon addition to titanium. The Tic compound is currently emerging as an important powder metallurgy base constituent similar to the WC compound. Ehrlich' identified the phases and structures present in the Ti-C system. The peritectoid region of the phase diagram was investigated by Jaffee et al." A preliminary diagram based on theoretical considerations was proposed at the outset of this research." The Tic compound has been investigated extensively and has been reported on in a large number of papers. Experimental Procedure Arc-melted alloys of 24 compositions in the range 0 to 20 wt pct C were investigated using metallography, X-ray diffraction, and, for the liquidus and solidus regions, incipient and complete melting. All alloys were prepared from iodide titanium (New Jersey Zinc Co., 99.95 pct Ti minimum) and spectroscopic grade carbon (National Carbon Co.). To prevent carbon spattering during arc melting the carbon was encapsulated in titanium. For alloys containing less than 1 pct C the powder was inserted into a capsule formed by drilling a hole in the as-received rod. For higher compositions, capsules were formed from titanium sheet. Arc Melting: The charges were melted in the copper-hearth cold electrode furnace shown in Fig. 1. This furnace is similar in principle to the all-metal unit adapted for titanium melting at Battelle Memorial Institute.' THE development of the reverberatory furnace for smelting copper ores up to 1912 was described by E. P. Mathewson1 with details concerning the great changes in dimensions of the furnace. Hayward2 tabulated similar data, giving developments up to about 1924, in his revision of Hofman's Metallurgy of Copper. DEVELOPMENT OF PRESENT SMELTING PRACTICE Dimensions of Furnace Very great changes were made in the dimensions of the smelting hearths of the furnaces in the period from about 1800 to 1906, the length increasing from about 11 to 116 ft., and the width from 8 to 19 ft. During this time the tonnage smelted increased from about 9 to 250 tons per 24 hr., and the tons of charge smelted per ton of coal increased from 0.77 to 4.3. Dr. Mathewson3 noted no great difference in the "fuel ratio" (i. e., the amount of charge smelted per ton of coal) as the furnace at Anaconda was increased in length by stages from 85 to 116 ft. (The percentage of copper in the slag, however, was lowered from 0.42 to 0.36 per cent. The other components of the slag were not given.) Lump coal fired on grates was the fuel used during this period. The practice in operating the furnaces over such a length of time naturally varied considerably, and there were differences in composition and nature of the charge, yet it may be considered that the improvements made were due largely to increases in the size of the furnace used. Doubt-less some credit should be given to improvements in operating technique, like changes in the methods of firing the lump coal. High manganese slags of low phosphorus and iron content are produced by air oxidation of high phosphorus spiegeleisen in a basic-lined converter. Control of phosphorus and iron within specification limits for ferromanganese ore feed is obtained by a unique cyclic operating procedure. Various types of slags, or synthetic manganese ore, can be made. AN affiliated paper' describes the production of high phosphorus spiegeleisen containing 14 to 23 pct Mn and up to 4 pct P in an experimental blast furnace from open-hearth slag or manganiferous iron ore. This phosphorus content is too high for use of the spiegel in normal steel-production operations. Consequently, a preferential separation must be effected whereby the manganese is concentrated in a product that is usable in industrial operations. The preferential separation methods being investigated for this phase of the work are confined to pyrometal-lurgical processes for ready incorporation into steel-plant operations. It is fortunate that manganese is more actively oxidizable than iron or phosphorus, and therein lies a preferential separation method for isolating manganese from these two elements. Silicon is more strongly oxidizable than manganese, and its oxidation precedes, or occurs simultaneously, with manganese. Therefore, manganese and silicon are separable into a high manganese oxide slag phase while the phosphorus and iron remain in the molten metallic state. Complete separation of these elements represents an ideal condition which is not generally attainable in actual operations. This pyro-metallurgical method for separating manganese from phosphorus and iron by preferential oxidation was investigated by blowing 500 lb of metal in a basic-lined vessel to obtain preliminary information on the effectiveness of the procedure. Certain conditions of attainment in the separation process are desirable in any method for removing manganese from high phosphorus spiegeleisen, such as: 1—High recovery of manganese in the oxidation product; 2—the product to be of equal or better quality than ferromanganese-grade ore—48 pct Mn minimum, less than 10 pct SiO2, and Mn-P ratio of 300:1; and 3—attainment of the enumerated objectives in a product amenable to industrial handling, such as a slag of high manganese content that will flow from the processing vessel and of sufficient fluidity for ready separation of metallic granules that may have become mixed with the manganese slag phase. Previous Work Recovery of manganese from low grade ores and industrial byproduct slags by smelting to spiegeleisen, with subsequent oxidation to synthetic ferro-manganese-feed ores, has been a subject for periodic investigation during the past four or five decades in the United States and Germany. Joseph' and associates of the Bureau of Mines North Central Experiment Station, Minneapolis, Minn., smelted manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna range, Minn., to spiegeleisen and subsequently tried air and ore oxidation procedures for concentrating the manganese into synthetic ferrograde manganese ore. Joseph's results on the operation of a side-blown basic-lined converter for air oxidation of manganese from molten spiegeleisen were so discouraging that the procedure was abandoned after 11 blowing tests. Much slag was thrown from the converter vessel; phosphorus content was four to five times the maximum allowable for ferro ore; and a manganese-iron ratio of only 2 or 3:1 was obtained in the slag instead of the required 8:1. Oxidation of manganese from spiegeleisen with about 0.5 pct P, by adding iron ore to molten spiegel in an experimental open-hearth furnace, proved moderately successful in Joseph's experiments. The main drawback to the operation was the necessity for over-oreing for effective oxidation of the manganese with consequent too high iron oxide residual in the slag. Furthermore, the phosphorus content was proportional to the iron concentration and therefore much too high, so that several hours of reduction by a carbonaceous material were required to adjust the iron and phosphorus to the desired content of high grade ferro feed. A troublesome feature of the slag product of the spiegel oxidation process was its lack of fluidity if the silica content was less than 10 pct, the concentration considered desirable for the synthetic ore. Those familiar with the war in France at first hand know that in these last two years the weight of the suffering has fallen upon the families of the well-to-do classes; those who before the war lived in comparative ease and comfort, with every prospect of educating their children as their parents and grandparents had been. Thousands of the men in these families have been killed, "officiers d'élite," and the small pensions accorded the widows permit them only to house and feed their children HELÈNE JOURNÈS. and give them a common-school education. The pension for a lieutenant's widow is $245 a year; for 'a captain's, $345; for a colonel's $575; and so on. At present, it requires three francs a day to provide food for one person in cities, and conditions are not improving. The American Ouvroir Funds, 681 Fifth Ave., New York City, has tried for nearly two years to have individual Americans give individual children a "bourse," or purse, as it is called, of from $150 to $250 a year, so that they may enter such educational institutions as the Lycées, the Polytechnique, Beaux Arts, St. Cyr, etc. The war relief societies of these military schools furnish photographs and histories of children under their care and on their lists.

IN the first edition of this volume,44 feldspar was introduced as "the I commonest mineral of the crystalline rocks," usually in small grains associated with other minerals and commercially produced only from pegrnatites. Now other crystalline rocks, such as alaskites and granites, have become present or potential sources of feldspar. In addition, feldspar has encountered very vigorous competition from such substitutes as nepheline syenite and aplite. COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES The feldspars form a group of which the principal species are orthoclase, microcline, albite, and anorthite. These are aluminum silicates of potassium, sodium and calcium. There are also a barium feldspar, celsian, and barium orthoclase feldspar, hyalophane, rarely found and of no commercial importance. None of the minerals in the feldspar group are found pure or nearly pure. The potash feldspars, orthoclase and microcline, nearly always contain some albite (soda microcline, an- orthoclase); the soda feldspars usually contain some anorthite (lime feldspar). There is a series of soda-lime feldspars known as plagioclase in which the albite and anorthite molecules replace each other in varying proportions from albite through oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytownite to anorthite. Theoretical chemical composition of the principal feldspars is given in Table 1. The Whiteware Division of the American Ceramic Society sub- mitted a list of definitions of ceramic terms, in April 1947, for use in technical literature. For feldspar it gives: "A group of igneous minerals consisting chiefly of the aluminum silicates of potash, soda and lime, in which one base generally predominates." Commercial feldspars are intergrowths of at least two species of feldspar, which occur associated with one or more accessory minerals such as quartz, muscovite, biotite, garnet and tourmaline as well as with small but varying proportions of the decomposition product, kaolinite. SAND and gravel are unconsolidated granular materials resulting from the natural disintegration of rocks. The two materials nearly al- ways occur together, variably proportioned in widely available de- posits. A commercial sand comprises the fine granular material, usually less than f in. in diameter (ASTM Designation C58-28), and gravel consists of the coarse, granular material larger than sand (ASTM Designation C125-46T). Gravel falls within the range of 1/4 in. and a top size usually of 3 ½ in. Chemical definition is impossible. Sand and gravel are always of secondary origin. They were formed from various massive rocks through the action of chemical and mechanical forces; then transported, abraded, washed, sorted, and classified by streams, glaciers, waves, or winds, to be redeposited in beds as they are found. Chief disintegrating forces in the reduction of rocks into granular particles were frost, rain, the dissolving action of acid and alkaline ground waters, the mechanical action of streams and waves, and the action of glaciers. Method of formation and deposition have imparted physical properties to sands and gravels that largely determine the commercial value of the materials for particular use and influence the manner of exploitation. In the early days of the commercial industry, purchasing specifications were relatively lenient but in. the past decade much more rigid quality requirements have had to be met for acceptance by all classes of purchasers. The trend to further severity in requirements is a challenge to the industry that commands full knowledge of the nature of raw materials at hand and skillful application of processing into commercial products. Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken, Eindhoven, Netherlands)— After the departure of our friend Dijkstra to the United States, investigations on the effect of alloying elements on the behavior of nitrogen in a iron were continued in Eindhoven. We too found internal friction curves with two separate peaks for iron containing nitrogen in addition to 0.5 atomic pct V or 0.5 atomic pct Mo. Our first publication on these investigations" appeared almost simultaneously with the paper now under discussion. At first sight our experimental results seem to be in harmony with their conclusions, but a closer examination reveals that in the case of the Fe-V-N alloy the abnormal peak is not controlled by one time of relaxation only. Whereas iron containing 0.5 atomic pct Mn or Mo absorbs an amount of nitrogen of about the same magnitude as that absorbed by pure iron under identical conditions, iron containing vanadium absorbs in addition one nitrogen atom for every vanadium atom. This last amount, far exceeding the first amount in the case under consideration, combines chemically with the vanadium and causes no internal friction. The "free" nitrogen in the vanadium alloy gives rise not only to a damping peak corresponding to that in pure iron but— due to the presence of VN particles in the metal—also to the abnormal peak at higher temperatures. The VN particles create interstitial sites around themselves where the free nitrogen atoms are bound much tighter than in the normal interstices. These abnormal interstices, therefore, will capture free nitrogen atoms rapidly, whereupon these give rise to the abnormal damping. The binding energy in the abnormal interstices is not the same for all, and with coarsening of the VN precipitate the distribution of these energies is displaced toward the side of stronger binding. This is deduced from a shift of the summit of the second peak toward higher temperatures (from 80" to 88°C in our experiments) caused by prolonged heating at 950°C. INTRODUCTION Ideally, this paper should start by citing examples of slope failures in open pit mines during earthquakes. I do not know of any such examples, although - since my search of the literature has not been exhaustive - such examples may well exist. However, there certainly are many examples of devastating earthquake-induced landslides, and there is no reason why such landslides cannot occur at large open pits. Moreover, many of the actual earthquake-induced landslides have seriously affected mining operations in one way or another. Hence, this paper will treat earthquake-induced landslide phenomena in general, in the hope and expectation that the reader can apply this general knowledge to the specific problems associated with open pit mining. Ultimately, of course, the aim is to predict the likelihood of the occurrence of earthquake-induced landslides, and to delineate steps which can be taken to minimize the possibility of their occurrence. These aims can be achieved only imperfectly at the present time, for our knowledge concerning earthquake-induced landslides is still in an embryonic stage. Nonetheless, much useful knowledge does exist. In order to understand and apply this knowledge, it is necessary to: 1. Review the nature and extent of actual earthquake-induced landslides; 2. Have a grasp of the basic terminology and concepts of seismology; 3. Study the fundamentals of probability-based seismic risk analysis; 4. Appreciate the way in which earth materials behave during earthquake loadings; and 5. Have a general knowledge of the methods currently available for analyzing the dynamic response of slopes. Much of this paper is devoted to this necessary background. Information of practical use in connection with various classes of slope stability problems is assembled in the final sections. The lattice reorientations in (1011) and (1013) twins of pure magnesium have been investigated using polarized light. Both forms (Ire subject 20 almost complete second-order twinning on the (1012) plane of the first-order twin. The observed deviations of composition planes by 6 and 3 deg, respectively, from coherent twinning planes are caused by second-order twinning. The experimental data indicate that (1011) and (1013) are reciprocal twins with a twinning shear 0.136. In a previous paper1 it was shown that the primary fracture mechanism in single crystals of magnesium strained in tension parallel to the basal plane is parting or fracture inside twins. In the temperature interval 25oto286oC, the observed twinning form, dominant in fracture, was a very small twin which formed in bands. Because these twins were very small and appeared in extensively deformed regions they did not lend themselves to X-ray analysis. Lacking Cou-ling and Pearsall&apos;s2 recently reported polarized light technique for magnesium, the twinning plane indices (K1) were originally determined by two surface composition plane measurements. This plane fell in a major zone (axis < 1120>) at an angle of 55.75 deg to the parent crystal basal plane. Because its habit deviated by 6 deg from{l0ll), 61.9 deg, the experimental data per se were not consistent with simple (1011) twinning and, for expedience, the twin was designated with habit plane indices (30341, 54.5 deg, representing the lowest set of indices corresponding to measured angles. Couling, Pashak, and sturkey3 have also found bands of reoriented lattice with a similar habit in polycrystalline specimens of magnesium and certain dilute magnesium alloys. These bands are significant because their formation in large numbers during plastic flow permit specific magnesium alloys to undergo very extensive deformation by cold rolling. Using polarized light2 they showed that the basal plane in the reoriented material was nearly parallel to the band habit and, as a result, proposed a mechanism for band formation involving a double twinning process in which (1011) twins form and then retwin according to (1012). Because of the obvious similarity between the twin bands observed in single crystals and in polycrystalline specimens, it was decided to investigate if the two phenomena were not identical and, if possible, to verify the retwinning hypothesis. The present paper is a report of this investigation and shows that the twins with the (3034) habit correspond closely to retwinned (l011) twins. Evi- dence is also given for an analogous retwinning process in (1013) twins. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Rectangular single-crystal specimen deformed in tension (stress axis in the basal plane parallel to [1010], as previously described,4 were polished electrolytically by Jacquet&apos;s method5 and etched in acetic picral.2 All twins studied in this investigation belong to a major zone, whose axis, [1210], was perpendicular to both stress axis and two sides of each specimen [(1210) surfaces]. These latter contain the plane of shear of the twins and measurements of the basal plane trace of twins on these surfaces determines the lattice orientations of the twins. The position of the basal plane in each case was determined with a polarizing microscope using a modification of the technique of Couling and Pearsall.2 For each twin the four positions of maximum extinction were measured, the data averaged, and then the pair of extinctions corresponding to the basal plane was determined by rotating the microscope stage and observing the position at which the color changed from orange to blue with a gypsum red, first-order plate inserted between the crossed Nicol prisms. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS (1013) Twins—In general, especially in speci-mens deformed at 150°C, (1073) twins appear in greater numbers and larger sizes than (1011) twins, and the lattice reorientation inside these twins is therefore easier to study and measure. Fig. 1 shows an area of an unetched and unpolished (1210) crystal surface containing a number of (1073) twins sloping upward to the right at about 29 deg with the basal plane of the original crystal (horizontal direction). Slip line segments may be seen in both the parent crystal (running horizontally) and in the twins (sloping downward to the right at approximately -22 deg with the horizontal). Calculations of the formation and growth of faults caused by a variation in lumellar widths were made for a two-dimensioml three-plate problem. The angle between the a-ß boundary and the growth direction was allowed to vary and the time evolution was studied using a quasisteady state approach. At spacings smaller than a critical spacing given by X V = AO variations in the larrlellar widths grow in time to produce faults that coarsen the structure, while at spac-ings larger than this critical spacing, variations in the lamellar widths decay in time. If small plates are introduced into the structure they may grow only at large spacings to refine the structure. The time evolution and shape of faults were calculated for the three plate-problem and then the three dimensional problem and rod-like eutectic were qualitatively discussed. UNDERSTANDING of the mechanism by which the spacing of directionally solidified eutectics is determined may allow one to control their structure better. Steady state solutions for the growth of lamellar structures have been found for a range of lamellar spacings A and growth velocities V. To obtain a unique solution for the isothermal growth of pearlite, Zener1 assumed that growth occurs at a maximum velocity, while Tiller2 assumed that a eutectic alloy, grown under an imposed velocity, will choose a spacing corresponding to minimum undercooling. These assumptions are equivalent and have been referred to as "extremum growth". The extremum condition predicts the observed relation between velocity and spacing as given by V = constant [I] but does not provide a mechanism for changing the lamellar spacing. Jackson and Hunt3 calculated the interface shape by using solutions to the diffusion equation for a planar interface and a relation of the interface composition to the local curvature. If the spacing is much larger than the extremum spacing, the interface breaks down catastrophically to form forked plates. However, the catastrophic breakdown cannot account for the small adjustments in spacing that must occur in practice..3 Direct observations during the growth of organic eutectics4 and the Pb-Sn eutectic5 show that spacing changes occur by the formation of faults. A fault in a plate-like eutectic is the edge of a plate. Once the faults form, they may move to make small adjustments in the spacing.6,3 The motion of faults intersecting the growing interface was shown by an approximate analysis to give Eq. [I].6 A perfectly regular lamellar structure should be able to persist over a range of lamellar spacings. However, during growth small perturbations in the structure may occur. If the amplitude of the perturbation increases in time the structure is unstable, while if all possible perturbations decrease in time the structure is stable. In a previous paper7 variations in the shape of the solid-liquid interface were considered, while this paper considers only variations in lamellar widths while maintaining a macroscopically planar solid-liquid interface. Previously, theories of lamellar growth1"3 have artificially contrained the growth to give a regular periodic structure. To allow for a variation in spacing, the three phase intersections and groove angles were allowed to change with time as determined by assuming local equilibrium. THREE-PLATE PROBLEM Since the spacing changes in eutectics by local formation of faults,4&apos;5 it is suggested that local variations in spacing are responsible. The interaction between neighboring plates will be greatest because they have the smallest diffusion distance. For simplicity, as a nearest neighbor approximation, a three-plate problem will be considered, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The structure consists of a periodic array in which all the plates are allowed to vary in width. As in steady state growth it is assumed that the average composition in the solid remains constant. A variation in plate widths, that maintains the composition in the solid, was introduced by making the first a-phase plate thinner by an amount A, keeping the width of the second B-phase plate constant, and increasing the width of the third a-phase plate. If the structure were not perturbed, as in the regular two-plate problem previously described,&apos; then the groove angles at the three-phase junctions are the equilibrium angles, 0, and ? B, and the solid-solid boundary is normal to the interface. In the three-plate problem with a variation in plate widths the phase boundaries are assumed to be related to the three-phase junction by equilibrium angles, but the a/B boundaries may be rotated by an angle 0 from the growth direction. Research and Development, once considered a luxury item only for well-heeled companies, has in the last two decades come into its own as a vital contributor to the fortunes of electronic, automotive, chemical and aerospace firms. In terms of money and talent poured into research, the mining industry is still far behind those industries. Although the U.S. Bureau of Mines, plus various mining and manufacturing firms and universities have made notable contributions to mining technology, the historical pattern of mining R&D shows a heavy reliance on the results of research in other industries. It is difficult to tell whether this pattern will change significantly in the future, but there is evidence of a growing awareness by mining officials that greater R&D efforts are going to be required not only to meet the nebulous demands of tomorrow&apos;s world but to meet the ever-present, mounting pressures being generated by "intra-metals" and "inter-materials" competition.

INTRODUCTION THE Bureau of Mines is operating an oil-shale mine 10 miles west of Rifle, Colo., as part of its Synthetic Liquid Fuels program. The purpose of operating this mine is twofold: First, to supply oil shale to an experimental processing plant; and second, to develop practices and select methods for mining oil shale on a commercial scale at the lowest practicable cost. The second purpose-that of finding out how to mine oil shale most cheaply-entails considerable mining research. Since the drilling of oil shale probably will be one of the major items of the mining cost, factors that influence drilling speeds were investigated. One phase of the drilling program was the development of a successful hard-surfaced rock-drill bit1 that can be used for drilling long holes in oil shale without changing bits. During that phase, drilling speeds were measured and drill cuttings were collected for assay and for screen sizing. When the cuttings from the individual tests were compared, a definite relationship was shown to exist between the drilling speed and the coarseness of the drill cuttings. PROCEDURE Measurement of Drilling Speeds All drilling in the tests was done with a Model UMB-D-99W Gardner-Denver wagon drill. Round-lugged drill steel, 1 ¼ in. in diameter was used in 6, 12, and 18 ft lengths with 2 1/8 -in. Timken H-type bits hard-faced with acetylene tube borium. The tests were made in the lower adit of the Bureau of Mines oil-shale mine; the grade of the oil shale drilled ranged from 18.6 to 42.7 gal per ton. During the experiments air pressure varied between 75 and 90 psi while water pressure remained fairly constant at 75 psi. All holes were drilled almost horizontally. Each drill hole was thoroughly cleaned of cuttings after being collared. The advance of the drill along the carriage was measured and recorded as the drilling speed in inches per minute. Method of Collecting Cuttings To facilitate the collection of cuttings, each drill hole was collared in a smooth, vertical portion of the oil-shale breast (Fig 1). A galvanized-steel sheet was fastened to the breast below the area in which the hole was to be drilled. The cuttings washed out of the drill hole by the drilling water were guided by the steel sheet into a wooden box. The cuttings that remained in the drill hole after the drill was withdrawn were scraped out and placed in the same box as the cuttings washed out of the hole. After the cuttings from a 1-min. drilling interval were collected, they were placed in flat metal pans. The fines were allowed to settle and the clear water was decanted. The cuttings then were dried in the sun.

Shales rich in oil are found at several places along the coast of Brazil. The material has been prospected at several places, and samples have been examined and reported upon by competent authorities. So far as I am acquainted with them, these oil-bearing beds are of Tertiary age. A glimpse at the distribution and character of the Tertiary rocks of the region should give us some idea of the possible distribution of these oil-bearing shales. Tertiary rocks skirt the northeast coast of Brazil from the northern part of the State of Espirito Santo almost or quite to the Amazon valley. Here and there this narrow strip is cut in two by the encroachment of the sea, and the underlying gneisses, granites or other crystalline rocks are exposed upon the beach. In other places, the Tertiary belt widens out until it is 80 kilometers or more in width. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of a part of the coast-area referred to. Along the coast from Prado, in the State of Bahia, northward to Natal, there is a line of bluffs from 15 to 90 meters high, interrupted here and there by stream-valleys. As seen from the sea, these bluffs are rather conspicuous and highly colored yellow, brown, red, white, black, and purple. These colors are often so mingled as to give the beds a mottled or parti-colored appearance. Fig. 2 shows a characteristic bit of the coast in the State of Parahyba do Norte. In some places, especially in the southern part of the State of Sergipe, and in the northern part of Rio Grande do Norte, the immediate coast is covered with sand-dunes. Here and there these sanddunes have been carried inland over the top of the Tertiary beds, and the subsequent encroachment of the sea has exposed the Tertiary rocks again, where they form the bases of the bluffs. This is well shown in Fig. 3, from a photograph taken at Bahia Formosa, on the coast of Rio Grande do Norte.

An equation has been developed which will permit the direct determination of free settling velocity of any sized particle encountered in mineral benefici-ation. The equation is based on Newton&apos;s Law with the friction factor defined as a function of the laminar boundary layer. Development of the equation is described first from an empirical trial-and-error approach. Examples are given of actual settling data from the literature versus calculated data to prove the validity of the new equation. Newton&apos;s law of resistance of a fluid to flow around a sphere is expressed in Eq. 1. Free settling velocities can be determined by setting Eq. 1 equal to the gravitational force on a particle and solving for V. Experience has shown that when the solids are greater than 1 mm in diam, or when Reynold&apos;s number for the system is greater than 800-1000, the friction factor term, fD, essentially becomes a constant, and Eq. 2-b becomes Newton&apos;s equation for free-settling and is applicable under the conditions stated. Another special condition exists for particles smaller than 0.05 mm or when Reynold&apos;s number for the system is less than three. In this case fD=24/NRor24µ/pL,dV,. BORE surfaces of used guns commonly show a pattern of cracks in various degrees of development. It has been suggested that these cracks may aid erosion by providing channelways for the gases, eventually leading to the tearing out of blocks of metal. Under the general studies of gun erosion conducted at the Geophysical Laboratory it appeared desirable to consider this factor, and to determine the resistance to surface cracking offered by gun steel and by various other materials that might be used in the bores of guns. METHOD AND APPARATUS In order to make such a determination it is necessary to have (I) an arrangement in which the surface to be studied can be subjected to conditions similar to those in a gun with respect to temperature, pressure (developed by explosion gases), composition of the gases and length of time the surface is exposed to the gases; and (2) a specimen that can be examined readily after any number of shots, and then fired again, if necessary. The first of these conditions can be met by using an explosion vessel designed by H. S. Roberts of the Geophysical Laboratory. Fig I shows a cross section of the apparatus. The "gun" G from which the charge is fired is made from the receiver of a caliber 0.30 army rifle, M1903, and the charges are prepared in caliber 0.30 cartridge cases. The test specimen S is held in place by a cone-shaped plug P and by a steel ,bridge B which is bolted to the outside of the explosion vessel on either side of the section shown. The plug, in turn, is held in place by a screw collar C. Maximum pressure is controlled by a brass rupture disk R. Part of the explosion gases flow past the two flat areas on S. st the two flat areas on S. Temperature and composition of gases, and the time before the rupture disk breaks, can be controlled by amount and kind of powder used, and pressure can be controlled by using rupture disks of different thickness. While the explosion vessel used was not designed so that temperature and pressure could be measured, in other vessels of closely similar size and shape containing proportionate charges of the same kind of powder as that used for standard testing procedure, values of 2700°K and 5000 psi were obtained. Since the orifices past the flat areas on the plug are small compared to the rupture disk hole (1:16), most of the gas goes out through the rupture disk when it breaks. The amount that goes by the plug depends on (I) the pressure attained before the rupture disk breaks and (2) the time it takes for this pressure to be built UP. The second condition (examination at will after any firing) is met by using for specimens short rods that have flat areas ground on opposite sides. These flat

(communication to the Secretary) : In his remarks on crushing-machinery, Mr. Douglas says (Twins., xxii., p. 322): "To insure a smaller and more uniform size of particles in the crushed material, the Dodge crusher still communicates motion to the upper extremity of tile movable jaw, which oscillates on fixed pivots projecting from its lower extremity!&apos; The notion that, in order to obtain a fine and uniform product from a rock-breaker, the movable jaw must be pivoted at its lower extremity, seems to obtain generally among mill-men, as well as among manufacturers of machinery. My experience with machines of both types does not confirm this belief. It is true that, to obtain a uniformly fine product from a jaw-crusher, the stroke at the lower extremity of the crushing-surface must be short; but that the movement at that end must be less than at the other or receiving-end is, I think, an erroneous assumption. Figs. 1 and 2 are intended to illustrate the two types of machine. It is found in practice that the capacity and the nature of the product of either machine, as usually constructed, are governed by the opening, C D, and the length of stroke of the movable jaw at D. This being the case, machines of either type, of the same width of crushing-surface, running at the same speed, and having the same adjustment as to opening and stroke at D, should give, when fed

Any society of undergraduates at a technical school, comprising students in any branch of engineering, metallurgy, chemistry, geology, etc., may be recognized by the Board of Directors in its discretion as an Affiliated Student Society, and its name, together with the names of its president and its secretary, may be published in Mining and Metallurgy or the Directory of the Institute. The members of such a society will not be named individually on the membership list of the Institute, but may at any time be proposed for election as Student Associates or Junior Members of the Institute, in the usual way. 2. Membership in an Affiliated Student Society, certified by the official representative thereof, and accompanied by suitable testimony as to character and qualifications, will have special weight with the Membership Committee of the Institute, in its consideration of the proposal of a candidate for membership. The Affiliated Student Societies receive the following privileges: 1. A copy of Mining and Metallurgy free; 2. The use of Employment Service; 3. The use of Mining and Metallurgy for publicity purposes, such as printing notices of their activities, etc.; 4. Assistance in obtaining speakers for their meetings, lists of moving-picture films, etc. To retain the privileges of the Affiliated Student Society, its officers must keep in touch with the Secretary of the Institute and advise him of its activities. The foregoing plan is not confined to students in mining engineering or metallurgy. Any undergraduate society of engineers may avail itself of the privileges offered.
