MarTENSITIC a has been observed to form spontaneously from the retained ß phase during the preparation of thin foil specimens of metastable Ti-Cr alloys containing from 6.9 to 20 wt pet Cr. Similar spontaneous martensite reactions have been reported in thin foils of 0 brass' and other alloys.2 4 The absence of retained austenite in iron-based alloys has also been attributed to spontaneous decomposition during thinning.5 The present work indicates that a unique situation occurs during which the spontaneous transformation takes place when the transitional ? phase is present in the as-quenched or partially aged ß phase. Alloys containing 6.9, 7.0, 8.0, 12.0, and 20.0 wt pet Cr were prepared by the levitation melting of "io-chrome" chromium and iodide titanium. The 0.5-in.-diam ingots were vacuum-annealed at 1000oC, and wafers 0.020 in. thick were then cut from the ingots. These wafers were wrapped in molybdenum foil, encapsulated in Vycor under a reduced pressure of purified helium, and then held for 30 min at 1000°C. The specimens were quenched in water to retain the metastable high-temperature ß phase. The quenched alloys were thinned by mechanical grinding to about 0.005 in. thick, then electropolished in a solution of 300 ml methyl alcohol, 175 ml n-butyl alcohol, and 30 ml perchloric acid at a temperature of -40°C. Needle specimens 0.005 to 0.010 in. diam were taken from each ingot and heat-treated with the foil specimens. It was my intention to have directed the attention of the members of the Institute to a complete series of rocks representing the older and middle formations represented in Pennsylvania, but time has been insufficient for the purpose, and 1 have been unable, in the first attempts to reduce the sections of those rocks, which I have brought with me to this meeting, to the requisite thinness necessary for exhibiting the peculiarities of their constituent minerals. The rocks represented here belong to the various horizons already mentioned, and include gneiss, ferruginous gneiss, chlorite slate, quartzites, and hydro-mica slates, limestones, dolomites, ferruginous conglomerates, quartz conglomerates, " Potomac marble" (nether member of the Mesozoic series), dolerites, and a syenite. The order in which these are named is, roughly, the order .of geographical position in a section line from southeast to northwest, commencing at the intersection of the Northern Central Railroad with the Maryland line, and ending a few miles from the town of York, and a short distance within the marginal outcrop of Mesozoic red sandstone. In such a geographical section all the rocks above mentioned would be encountered in the given order except syenite, about which a few words are to be said in a moment. (But this is far from representing the rocks in their geological sequence.) There is nothing of unusual interest to present to your notice in these slates and quarteites. The limestones were carefully searched tinder 450 diameters microscopic power, but they show no signs of organic remaius. FRom the beginning of its activities, the members of the National Production Committee have felt that the following points were essential to the success of its work: The operators must feel that their operations were not 100 per cent. efficient; that they should be courteous and fair in their treatment of their employees; and that they should set an example of hard work and patriotic interest in increased production. Every move made must appeal to the sense of fairness of all parties concerned. The men must feel that in working more faithfully, and consequently producing more coal, they are rendering a distinct service to their Government in the time of its great need. As the workers feel that greater efficiency on their part results only in greater profits to the operators, the advantage to the operator should be lost sight of, as far as possible, and the advantage to the Government in fighting the war emphasized. Both operators and workers should know that the Government considered increased production an obligation, and opportunity for service, resting on both parties and not on the operators or the workers alone, and that both parties could very much better the efficiency of the pre-war period. Had the committee intimated that it thought the coal shortage was due entirely to the idleness and inefficiency of the workers, its campaign would have failed, for the men would have resented the charge because only too frequently their efforts to produce more coal were thwarted by bad management; besides, the operators would have lacked stimulus to better effort. On the other hand, had the impression been given that the committee thought that the coal shortage was due entirely to bad management, the operators would have resented the charge because only too frequently their efforts to produce more coal were thwarted by the idleness and inefficiency of the workers; and the workers, having been thus indirectly pronounced 100 per cent. efficient and patriotic, would have lacked stimulus to better effort.

An experimental investigation was made of the effect of temperature upon the three-phase pressure associated with the propane-water and propene-water systems when hydrates were present. In addition, the characteristics of the propane-propene-water system were established over a limited range of ternperatureo under conditions such that hydrate was formed. The hydrate phase for this system may he a solid solution and the distribution of propane and propene in it is similar to that found in the coexisting hvdrocarhon liquid phase. INTRODUCTION A knowledge of the characteristics of hydrates of the hydrocarborrs encountered in industrial practice is of importance in connection with the design of process equipment. Villardl.1,2 carried out early studies of hydrates, and de Forcrand1 con-sidered the more probable compositions of the hydrates of hydrocarbons. Hammerschnid1 presented information about the propane-water and the isobutane-water systems. Scheffer5 studied the hydrate of hydrogen sulfide in detail, and de For-crand reported on the hydrates of krypton, argon, and xenon.1 Roberts and co-workers1,2 determined the nature of the hydrates formed in the methane-water and ethane-water systems. Carson and Katz10 studied the methane-propane-water, methane-pentane-water, and the methane-hexane-water systems in the four-phase region. The results of this rather extensive investigation indicated that the paraffinic hydrates formed solid solutions. The experimental evidence now available does not Support the existence of hydrates of the pentanes-antl-heavier hydrocarhons but it cannot be stated with certainty that such hydrates are not formed. Stackelherg. 11,12,13 made extensive studies of the crystal structure of paraffinic hydrate; by means of x-ray techniques and found that hydrates poses; a definite structure and composition. The existence of such a Structure does not preclude the firmation of Solid solutions of hydrates in aqueous systems containing two or more hydro-carbon~. Wilcox, Carson and Katz" reviewrd the information on the hydrates of importance in the processing of natural gas and presented data concerning their formation from natural gas. Kobayashi and Katz1' made studies at high pressure of the Hydrate of methane. and Unruh and Katz"' investigated hy-drates in mixtures of carbon rlioxide and methane. Frost and Deaton contributed to the knowledge of the composition of the paraffinic hydrates The irregularities in the experimental results were several times the expected uncertainties. This experience confirms the behavior encountered by other investigators indicating that hydrates tend to occlude water during their formation, thus rendering difficult the direct measoremeut of their composition. Miller and Strong2 investigated a number. of paraffinic hydrates from the standpoint of their possible application to (, the industrial storage of gas. Powel1 studied the effect of solutes upon the decomposition temperature of paraffin hydrates. Marked lowering of the decomposition temperature at a given pressure may he obtained by the use of such additive agents as ethylene glycol, urea. and sodium chloride. APPARATUS AND METHODS Two method* were here employed to study the behavior of hydrates. The first involved a glass capillary within which the hydrocarbons and water were confined over mercury. The second made use of a double-ended weighing bomb technique." The glass capillary equipment has been described elsewhere.'" A schematic drawing of it is presented in Fig. 1, where the arrangement of the agitator and mercury reservoir is shown in some detail. The lower part of the glass capillary, D, was enlarged to afford space within which the fluids used in the investigation could he stored at low pressures after their introduction through the valve. CLYDE WILLIAMS has reminded me that in the fall of 1929, gave, in MINING AND METALLURGY, an account of the hopes and aspirations of Battelle Memorial Institute, which was then just swinging into initial operation; and that therein I remarked that B.M.I. should stand, as well, for Better Metallurgical Industries, since helping to better them was the Institute's aim. So he has suggested that some of the betterments of the past fifteen years might well be listed. A yearly summary of progress comes pretty close to the ultimate in futility, for everything proved of value in that year had its inception in earlier years, and everything really new has still to be proved. Plenty of things hailed as wonderful achievements for that year, by some enthusiasts invited to contribute to the summary, turn out in later years to be inglorious flops. But over a decade and a half, betterments that are really such become self-evident, and recounting some of them can be done without guesswork or wishful thinking. An inventory of what was known and utilized in 1929 compared to what is now known and used is not too hard to make. Perhaps the most clear-cut picture of what is known and used at a certain date is drawn by the handbooks, textbooks, and equipment catalogs of that date, with scientific periodical literature forecasting what knowledge may later be used when it is verified and assimilated. The tools available for production or for research limit the application of old and the finding of new knowledge.

Results of the application of geologic knowledge to grade control have been remarkable. Grade reduction from dilution has been diminished from greater than 9% at the time of the program's beginning to about 2% at present. This has resulted in an increase of about 1.8 lb of copper per ton of ore mined and has made a substantial contribution to earnings at White Pine during the past two years. Even more improvement is expected in the future. The White Pine orebody, situated in the southwestern portion of the Keweenaw peninsula of upper Michigan, is a gently dipping stratiform or bedded deposit. Copper distribution is stratigraphically controlled with higher values being confined to specific beds in the ore column. Room-and-pillar mining is practiced. Mining technique and geologic characteristics present a special array of problems in controlling the grade of ore.

The orebodies of Gibraltar Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) are located on the western slope of Granite Mountain, central British Columbia. The area in and around Gibraltar Mines has a moderate topographic relief with elevations between 3500 and 4100 ft. The property is 95% covered by overburden which varies in depth from a few feet to 230 ft. Early History and Geology The present Gibraltar Mines property before amalgamation consisted of the Pollyanna property (Duval-Canex) and the Gibraltar property (original Gibraltar Mines) as well as some Coast Silver and McLeese Lake Copper claims.

THE electrolytic separation of silver and gold has been practiced by the refineries in the United States for a good many years; and probably because of frequent visiting between officials of plants and the consequent exchange of views, operations in the various silver and gold refineries are very similar. We find, for instance, they practically all use electrolytes of approximately the same composition, which, no doubt, is more the result of experience than of studies of electrolytes. At the new electrolytic parting plant of the U. S. S. Lead Refinery, Inc., East Chicago, Ind., considerable attention has been given to the, composition of electrolytes, especially to their conductivity and their effect on the character of the silver deposit. We are not aware that anything has been recently published on this subject and are, therefore, presenting such data as we have with the idea that, although it will not be wholly new, it may stimulate interest in the subject. EFFECT OF COPPER CONTENT ON CONDUCTIVITY The first work, was to determine the specific conductivity of silver nitrate and copper nitrate solution. Concentrated solutions of silver nitrate and copper nitrate were prepared by dissolving analyzed chemically-pure salts in distilled water, and determining the silver and copper in each. Definite amounts of the concentrated solutions were taken, mixed and diluted to a definite volume. The silver and the copper were determined in each of these solutions and the conductivity was, then determined. The plotted results are shown in Fig. 1 and 2. The effect of increasing quantities of silver and, copper is readily seen. A comparison of the two sets of curves shows conclusively the benefit of holding the copper content of the electrolyte above 50 g. per liter, as its

The C. E. Weed concentrator treats 51,000 tons per day of 0.5% to 0.7% copper ore received from the Berkeley Pit, the Continental East Pit and the Butte underground mines. Improved operating techniques and conversion from semi-autogenous secondary grinding to ball milling have increased tonnage from an original design of 42,000 tpd. Separate treatment of sands and slimes, with recovery of soluble copper from the slimes, has increased total copper recovery. Concentrator tailings are pumped 600 vertical feet and 20,000 horizontal feet for disposal.

In a recent publication by Flemings and Nereo, equations for the calculation of the solute distribution in castings were developed, and the solute distributions for unidirectionally solidified A1-4.5 pct Cu ingots cast under various thermal conditions were calculated. The equations derived by Flemings and Nereo for the dendrite "expansion" and "steady-state" zones are essentially equivalent to those previously published by Kirkaldy and Youdelis, 16 for, although the flow velocity cooling rate, and temperature gradients appear in the fundamental differential equations, calculation of the solute distribution requires that the above be explicitly related to the assumed or measured solid-liquid mass distributions during solidification. In the treatment of Kirkaldy and Y-oudelis the mass distributions are simply assumed or measured without any prior and explicit association of the mass distributions to a velocity parameter. The treatment of Flemings and Nereo permits solidification conditions more complicated than the simple unidirectional case to be considered (although in principle the treatment of Kirkaldy and Youdelis could also be extended to include the more general solidification case); however, we note some limitations in the treatment of Flemings and Nereo, and the purpose of this discussion is to point these out and also to indicate those points of similarity in the mass distribution models used which make the two treatments equivalent. Both the Kirkaldy-Youdelis and Flemings-Nereo treatments consider a zone of dendrite "expansion" followed by a "steady-state" zone. However, Flemings and Nereo have failed to consider a zone of "collapse" which begins at the base of the first dendrites to reach the top of the ingot. The omission of this zone of "collapse" results in too high a value for the solute concentration in the latter portion of the ingot to solidify and the conservation of total solute is not possible. In the zone of "collapse" the solute concentration rapidly decreases, which may be accounted for as follows: consider a mushy zone of length X,, shown schematically in Fig. 11 (a), which develops at the chill face and then moves as a steady-state configuration along the length of a solidifying ingot. The solute distribution in this zone, when it first attains the steady state, is shown qualitatively in Fig. 11(b). The segregation is positive (above Co) in the region ab because this region contains primary dendritic solid, ranging from kco to kcE in composition (where k is the partition coefficient and CE is the composition of the eutectic liquid), and liquid metal near eutectic composition. The segregation is negative (below Co) in the region bc because it contains primary dendritic solid only slightly above kco in average composition and liquid metal only slightly above Co in composition. The activities of nickel in liquid iron-nickel solutions containing from 10 to 90 at. pct Ni were measured over the temperature range .1510° to 1600°C. A special function was devised whereby activities can be computed by a graphical integration using the results of chemical analyses on the vapor phase alone. The liquid solutions studied exhibit negative deviation from Raoult's law, but they approach ideality as the temperature is raised from 1510° to 1600°C. The maximum heat of solution is less than -8.0 kcal per mole. The entropy of solution is less than —2.5 kcal per mole deg at 1510°C, and changes negligibly as the temperature is raised. The liquid iron-nickel solutions do not follow regular solution behavior. THE activities of the components of a liquid alloy system can be determined in favorable cases from the partial pressure of the vapor in equilibrium with the liquid alloy.' The rediffraction of Bragg diffracted beams by differently oriented regions (such as twins) of a crystal may give rise to "extra" reflections or reciprocal lattice points. These two papers are concerned with predicting these additional reflections which result from twin related regions of a lattice. Analysis is made for {111}fcc twins, (112)bcc twins, and {hkil}hcp twins. It is first required, knowing the specific variant of the twinning plane in each case, to predict the positions of the twin reflections relative to the matrix reciprocal lattice. Once this is done, the positions of the "extra" multiply diffracted reflections may be deduced. Part I is devoted to establishing "selection ru1es" for twinning, i.e., the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of twinned reciprocal lattice points. 1. INTRODUCTION. Transmission electron diffraction patterns are frequently complicated by multiply diffracted beams. Pashley and stowell1 have recently demonstrated that certain extra reflections in evapo- rated films of gold result from the rediffraction of matrix Bragg diffracted beams by (111) microtwins in the gold. It was previously (and erroneously) suggested 2,3 that observed "irrational" reflections in fine-grained gold were due to the presence of some hcp gold. A similar situation exists, apparently, for some bcc materials; fine (112) twins in bcc martensite in Fe-Ni alloys4 give rise to extra reflections. There are many other examples. The number of transmission electron microscopic investigations is continually increasing, and because of the importance of double (and multiple) diffraction in the interpretation of diffraction patterns, it was judged that a detailed elaboration of the principles involved is desirable, as well as the extension of these principles in reasonably closed form to other crystal structures, particularly bcc and hcp. The present analysis considers double diffraction caused by (111) twins in fcc metals, (112) twins in bcc metals, and {hkil} = {hkl) twins in hcp metals. For each case of twinning, the various possible (variants of) twins give rise to a set of interpenetrating reciprocal lattices. The relative spatial arrangements of these reciprocal lattices can be deduced (Part I) and are expressed in terms of simple "selection rules". The resulting sets of interpenetrating reciprocal lattices are then analyzed for possible doubly diffracted reflections (Part II). The notation used, and some important formulas are given in Appendices I and 11.

AT the meeting of the Board of Directors in March 1945, plans were discussed for a special General Meeting to commemorate, in an appropriate way, the founding of the Institute at Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, in 1871. It was decided that seventy-five years of growth, progress, and achievement; of service to the profession, to the mineral industry in all its branches, and to society at large should be fittingly celebrated. Harvey S. Mudd, then President of the Institute, was authorized to appoint a General Committee on Arrangements as well as necessary working committees. On June 6, 1946, Louis S. Cates, as President, at a special meeting of the Pennsylvania-Anthracite Section at Wilkes-Barre, officially announced plans or a three-day meeting to be held at The Waldorf-Astoria, in New York City, September 16-18, 1946. Four major sessions to be addressed by eminent speakers had been-planned in some detail to constitute a "World Conference on Mineral Resources." The U. S. Department of State had dispatched a 1500-word airgram to all its diplomatic posts giving worldwide publicity to the scope and importance of the meeting; and formal invitations had been issued to more than 150 institutions in 40 foreign countries to send official delegates. These included scientific and engineering societies, educational institutions, and sundry government agencies connected with the mineral industry. However, about a month later it was found necessary to postpone the celebration. The reason was an unforeseen expansion in the requirements of the United Nations for hotel living space in New York to accommodate delegates to the meeting scheduled to start September 3; and, of course, U.N. delegates would be given priority. It was decided to postpone the Celebration-conference to the week beginning March 17, 1947; t6 devote the first three days primarily to the Celebration; and to follow it with the technical sessions, committee meetings, and other functions, that are regular features of the Annual Meeting. To accommodate the combined "show" it would be necessary to hold some of the Annual Meeting sessions at another hotel;

UPON heating a metal oxide or sulfide in H2, first only oxygen or sulfur is removed from the surface. Thus the metal/nonmetal ratio in the oxide or sulfide increases and the thermodynamic activity of the metal increases accordingly. For the formation of metallic nuclei, a certain super saturation is necessary, i.e., the activity of the metal must become greater than unity. Once nuclei of the metal have been formed, the supersaturation is supposed to decrease. Even under steady-state conditions of a reduction process, however, the activity of the metal inside an oxide or sulfide phase must be greater than unity in order to have a driving force for the individual steps of the reduction process. As an example, consider the reduction of Ag2S with a high mobility of cations and electrons. As shown schematically in Fig. 1, the reduction process involves the following steps:' 1) sulfur removal along the entire Ag2S surface in form of H2S, 2) migration of Ag' ions and electrons from the Ag2S surface to nuclei of metallic silver, 3) transfer of Ag+ ions and electrons from the Ag2S phase to the metal. For a finite rate of step 3, the activity of silver in Ag2S next to the Ag2S-Ag interface must be greater than unity. Moreover, for a finite rate of step 2, the activity of silver at the gas-Ag2S interface must be still somewhat greater. Theoretical considerations lead to the tentative conclusion that at least under steady-state conditions the supersaturation will be rather low.' To test this conclusion, the average activity aAg of silver in a Ag2S tablet about 2 mm thick with a diameter of 5 mm was followed as a function of time by measuring the electromotive force E of the cell Pt I Ag | Agl I Ag2S I Pt where AgI is used as a solid electrolyte in which only Ag+ ions are mobile. The activity aAg is calculated as aAg=exp(-EF/RT) Since the diffusion coefficient for transport of silver in Ag2S is very high (- 3 . l0-2 sq cm per sec),3 the average activity aAg is representative for both the bulk and the surface of the Ag2S tablet. Experiments were conducted at about 400°C. The cell was surrounded by an aluminum block in order to secure a uniform temperature and to eliminate thermoelectric effects. With the help of a potentiometer, first a potential of 0.16 v was applied to the above cell in argon in order to obtain a well defined initial state with a Ag/S ratio close to 2.000.~ Then the cell was disconnected from the potentiometer and a gentle stream of H2 was passed along the Ag2S surface. In view of the removal of sulfur in form of H2S, the electromotive force E decreased within 20 to 30 min to zero corresponding to a Ag/S ratio of 2.003 and became negative, indicating a value of aAg> 1. In 1937 the employees of the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd.. at Timmins. Ont., Canada, approached organized medicine for a plan to provide themselves and their families with a complete medical service including hospitalization. This approach was made because of two conditions: (1) the necessity for some organization whereby contributions could be made in instalments to offset the sudden and large expense connected with illness for which the average employee is not prepared, and (2) the need for a more cohesive quality of service to replace a contract practice then in vogue, which did not take care of the employee's family or dependents. In different parts of the United States and Canada similar plans were in force, not only for employed groups but for numbers of people in circumscribed areas. In Europe different countries had adopted various forms of health insurance plans. It then was no surprise that these employees as a group should ask for some similar plan. With the cooperation of the management, a plan was instituted. The plan has one object only—the provision of medical services, including the accessory services such as hospitaliza-tion, X-rays, nursing, and necessary drugs and medicines. It is not concerned with cash benefits, sickness and accident payments, or any form of monetary return as the result of illness, but is simply an organization to provide medical services and pay for them from a central fund. It is a nonprofit organization and the only shareholders are the employees and their families who contribute and who in turn receive services. The Hollinger plan is limited to the employees of the Hollinger mine, who live in Timmins and the immediate vicinity. At first, the membership was voluntary. In the third year, it was made a condition of employment, with the proviso that at the end of any Association financial year an employee may withdraw if he wishes to do so. After withdrawal, he cannot again become a member until the end of the next Association year, and then only by the payment of the back dues. This step was taken to ensure continuity, and to prevent employees from withdrawing when well and reentering when faced with impending illness or operations. The employee himself is subject to medical examination on application for employment, and if accepted is subject to further examination by a specialist in chest diseases under the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario. Thus it is possible to exclude those who have heart disease, tuberculosis, or other disabling conditions when first employed. Wives and families of employees are not subject to medical examination but other dependents of an employee—mother, father, or other relative—who are declared by the employee to be wholly dependent upon him must be examined. Effects of short-circuiting paths on observed diffusion behavior in real crystalline systems are considered. It is concluded that experimentally measured diffusion coefficients may vary widely from values associated with true lattice diffusion to those appropriate for short-circuiting paths alone depending upon the conditions of the experiment and the sensitivity and completeness of the data. IN 1961 Harrison1 classified experimentally observed diffusion behavior in systems involving both lattice and dislocation-enhanced atomic transport into three categories. His types A and C were limiting cases where the measured diffusion coefficients using the usual serial sectioning techniques were representative of lattice diffusion (with only slight effects of dislocations) and dislocation-network diffusion (with only slight effects from lattice diffusion), respectively. In both cases A and C for a sectioning experiment in which the diffusion couple has the semi-infinite geometry and unidirectional diffusion takes place from a plane source located at the origin of the coordinate system, he pointed out that Gaussian penetration behavior should be observed. For case A the lattice coefficient should be slightly enhanced by dislocation contributions, and the model of Hart2 can be used to predict the amount of this enhancement. For case C the observed coefficient should be that for the dislocation network and have little or nothing to do with lattice diffusion. Hart's model in its general form is still applicable, but the apparent diffusion coefficient for this case is virtually independent of dislocation density. Harrison's case B is that for which non-negligible contributions exist for transport by both mechanisms and "the concentration distribution does not approximate to any simple form." With the possible exception of very low temperatures where diffusion distances approach atomic dimensions, any real diffusion specimen will in general show non-Gaussian behavior provided the data are complete enough to uncover it. Thus, a "complete" set of data for any real system cannot be expected to be totally amenable to treatment by a simple mathematical model which does not take into account the relative distribution of transport by the various modes or submodes. For a particular sensitivity of specimen analysis and at a given temperature of annealing if the concentration profile could be observed as a function of time, "the behavior will initially be type C, and will develop into type B. and ultimately type A".1 Thus, it appears that the type of diffusion behavior which is experimentally observed in a given system depends very much upon the particular experimental conditions and the particular tools available to obtain the data. Interpreted in this fashion, Harrison's classification refers not to the diffusion behavior as a whole but to the relative sensitivity of the method of examination and completeness of the data. In the present paper we will: 1) assume that the measured penetration behavior follows the same general classification as that proposed by Harrison; 2) give, for diffusion in tungsten, examples of the range of diffusion coefficients that it is possible to obtain in a single experiment; and 3) speculate that some arguments which consider the possibility of short-circuiting effects being responsible for "anomalous" diffusion in several bcc metals may have been discarded prematurely.3 Both monocrystalline and polycrystalline tungsten were used in this work. The former was obtained as triple-pass, electron-beam zone-refined 6.0-mm-diam rod from Materials Research Corp.. Orange-burg. N.Y. The latter was swaged, high-purity bar stock which was annealed for 2 hr at 2200°C and 10-9 torr to yield an average grain diameter of about 25 /i. The tracer Nb95 was received in oxalate solution from the Isotopes Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Experimental procedures of specimen preparation, isothermal diffusion annealing, serial sectioning by anodizing-and-stripping, and y counting of the individual sections to determine the tracer penetration profile after a given diffusion anneal have been described elsewhere.4 However, it should be noted that the anodizing-stripping sectioning technique has the particular advantage for this research of permitting sectioning to be accomplished over a wide range of

In a paper before the Institute at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., June, 1911,' Mr. James Gayley discussed the application of this process to iron-bearing materials. The same author² described the results of operations at the plant at Birdsboro, Pa. The purpose of the present paper is to present further discussion of some techuical details involved in the operation of this plant, and of the theoretical and practical relations of this product to blast-furnace practice. Since Oct. 1, 1911, the Birdsboro plant has been in operation at the blast-furnace of the E. & G. Brooke Iron Co. The results have been highly satisfactory, although the material treated, being chiefly the flue-dust currently made by the furnace or taker] from the accumulated stock-pile, was excessively high, and yet not uniform, in carbon, so that the desirable control or regularity of the amount of fuel in the mixture treated could not be maintained. Nothing could more forcibly demonstrate the flexibility of the process than the fact that, under these conditions, the sinter produced was, in all cases, of excellent quality. The Dwight & Lloyd process, as such, slid its present highly-developed mechanical appliances were described by Mr. Gayley in the paper above mentioned. While the repetition of some particulars will be unavoidable in this paper, it will be confined to features bearing upon the metallurgical principles involved. IT is customary to ascribe two general modes of occurrence to natural gas, namely shale. gas which, as the name indicates, is found in' shale, and reservoir gas, which occurs ill sandstone, conglomerate and dolomitic limestone. Both of these types are found in the Cleveland district. The shale gas has been produced on a small scale for a long period of years, probably dating back as far as 1883. Shale gas is a low-pressure gas, small in volume with variable pressure, and is limited to no definite horizon. It is generally independent of oil, may last for a long time, and is not dependent to any great extent on the structure of the rocks. There are many such wells in the district which range from 400 to 1,840 ft. in depth, although most have been completed at about 800 ft. This indicates that the wells pass through the Cleveland and Chagrin shales into the Huron or Portage shale of the Upper Devonian. During the last 2 years great interest has developed in a deeper-seated reservoir gas. What is commonly called reservoir gas is generally a high-pressure gas occurring in large volume at a definite horizon. Oil may, or may not, be associated with the gas, and in most regions in which reservoir gas is found, the geological structure is of great importance. This type of gas occurs in all large fields such as those of West Virginia which have been supplying Cleveland until the recent discovery of local gas at great depths in commercial amounts.
