In this paper, as in so many discussions of an historical nature, there is little chance for original material and much has had to be rewritten from older papers, documents, accounts, reports, and the like, some of which are of doubtful authorship or contain conflicting statistics. Fully aware of these pitfalls, the authors have tried to quote the origin where possible, and also to seek further confirmation when the statement warranted it, but they cannot assume responsibility for certain facts and dates. The Encyclopedia Britannica was frequently consulted. The authors wish to acknowledge assistance from Mackintosh-Hemp-hill Co. (formerly the Fort Pitt Works) and also from officials of the Watertown Arsenal who loaned valuable books and gave much necessary information. Iron ore in considerable quantities was known to exist within the territory of the Massachusetts Bay Colony; and as early as 1629 some steps appear to have been taken toward the manufacture of iron by the Court of Assistants in London, under whose patronage the colony was founded. During the next ten years, deposits of bog ore were found in numerous ponds in the Plymouth Colony; and, in 1652, iron manufacture was begun at Raynham. THE disastrous effect of two major wars on foreign economic health is giving American capital opportunities which might have not otherwise developed. At a time when discovery of major orebodies in the United States awaits fuller application of new geophysical tools and technical methods, U. S. investors must seek other fields where investment may be put to work. The unsettling effects of war have made it almost impossible for foreign nationals to develop mineral wealth, permitting Americans to enter at a time when U. S. mining, with a few exceptions, is in the process of expanding known orebodies and developing only a few new ones. Available capital, however, is not the only pre- requisite for entering the foreign mineral development field. The capital must be able to work in favorable economic atmosphere, a condition not easily satisfied in a world constantly in a state of political and social flux. In many countries, the political theory changes as often as the wind direction in March. Thus, the political stability of the form of government is of prime importance to the investor. In addition, a balanced budget and a moderate tax structure are important. Because in making foreign investment it is inevitable that one will have dealings with government officials, it is basic that they must be of high integrity. In countries filling the requirements, it will usually be found that the economic initiative of the individual is respected. PARTICULAR interest in the ventilation of deep mines, especially those in South Africa, has been created by a very complete system of cooling of the world's deepest mine, the Turf shaft of the Robinson Deep in Johannesburg. The writer visited this mine in January, 1936, and again in 1937. During these visits and subsequently, a considerable part of the theory involved in rock cooling in tunnels was developed and this has been checked by practical observations of the rates of rock cooling made within mines. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the method of attack of the mine problem. The cooling or air conditioning of mines by the use of mechanical refrigeration was not wholly new 1-5 when the Robinson Deep installation was made. The first mine to be cooled was the Morro Velho mine, in Brazil. The first installation in this mine was put into operation in December 1920, the refrigerant being ammonia.5 The surface cooling gave considerable benefit but it proved inadequate as greater depths were reached, therefore in 1929 two centrifugal refrigerating machines were installed at the 6000-ft. level. These were used in conjunction with the surface cooling system to furnish additional cooling at the lower levels. This later installation used Carrene as a refrigerant. This nonflammable refrigerant, having a boiling point of 104º at sea level, insured reasonable safety, since all parts of the machine operated at subatmospheric pressure. Very favorable reports have been received on the effectiveness of this installation, but no recent data are available. An interesting feature of that plant is that the condenser water is cooled by spraying it into the exhaust air from the mine at the base of the ventilation upcast, which permits the water to be cooled within a few degrees of the wet-bulb temperature of the air entering the upcast, and the only water that has to be supplied for condensing purposes is that lost by evaporation, or about 0.5 per cent of the volume circulating through the condenser. This plan affords an ideal means for the removal of the heat load from the refrigerating system, and of course also from the mine itself. The General Committee met in the Treasury Building at Washington on Oct. 6 and 7. At the first meeting, Cornelius P. Kelley was appointed chairman, and Paul Armitage, secretary. Sub-committees were ap-pointed on Invested Capital, Mine Valuation, and Depletion and De-preciation. On Oct. 7, the reports of these committees were submitted to the General Committee and were referred to the Executive Committee. A motion was carried that the Executive Committee he constituted a permanent committee to continue the work of the Committee, with full power to acid to and increase its membership, that. as thus increased, it should constitute a permanent organization to act- and cooperate with the Treasury Department in matters of mining taxation under the Federal Income and Excess Profits Tax Laws. A technique was developed- for determining the grain strain, and hence the grain boundary sliding contribution, occurring during the high- temperature creep of a magnesium alloy, from the distortion of a grid photographically printed on the specimen surface. The results were compared with those obtained from measurements of grain shape, both at the surface and interrwlly, and it was concluded that the grain shape technique may substantially underestimate the grain strain and overestimate the sliding contribution due to the tendency for migration to spheroidize the grains. ALTHOUGH a considerable volume of work has been published on the role of grain boundary sliding in high-temperature creep, many of the estimates of Egb (the contribution of grain boundary sliding to the total strain) have been in error due to the use of incorrect formulas or inadequate averaging procedures.' One of the most easy and convenient measurements from which to compute Egb is that of v, the step normal to the surface where a grain boundary is incident. Unfortunately, this parameter is also the one associated with the treatest number of pitfalls. Values of v have been used to calculate Egb from the equation: egb =knrVr [1] where k is a geometrical averaging factor, n is the number of grains per unit length before deformation, v is the average value of v, and the subscript ,r denotes the procedure of averaging along a number of randomly directed lines. If the dependence of sliding on stress were assumed, it would be possible, in principle, to calculate k from the known distribution of angles between boundaries and the surface. This in itself is difficult because the distribution depends on the history of the surface,' but the problem is even further complicated by the fact that v depends on other factors such as the unbalanced pressure from subsurface grains.3 However, the great simplicity of the measurement procedure for v makes it highly desirable that this problem of k determination should be overcome. In the present experiments, this was achieved by the use of an indirect empirical method in which the grain strain, eg, at the surface was determined by the use of a photographically printed grid. The assumption here is that the total strain, et, is simply the sum of that due to grain boundary sliding, egb, and that due to slip or other processes within the grains, eg. SO that: Et = Eg + Egb [2] Thus k is given by: In practice, it is customary to indicate the importance of sliding by expressing it as a percentage of the total creep strain; this quantity is termed y (= 100Egb/Et). The determination of Eg from a printed grid within the grains avoids the difficulties due to boundary migration which should be considered when the grain strain is calculated from measurements of the average grain shape before and after deformation. As first pointed out by Rachinger,4,5 however, this latter technique has the particular advantage that it can also be applied in the interior of a polycrystal. Recently, several workers have produced evidence on a variety of materials6-'' to support the observation, first made by Rachinger on aluminum,4,5 that 7 can be very high, 70 to 100 pct, in the interior, even when the surface value, determined from boundary offsets, is very much lower.10'11 Although there have been criticisms both of the shortcomings of the grain shape technique'' and of the different procedures used to determine y at the surface,' it seemed important to check whether measurements of sliding by grain shape gave values of y which were truly representative of the material. In the present experiments, grain shape measurements were therefore made both at the surface and in the interior for comparison with one another and with the independent measurements of grain strain using the surface grid technique. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The material used in this investigation was Magnox AL80, a Mg-0.78 wt pct A1 alloy supplied by Magnesium Elektron Ltd., Manchester. Tensile specimens, about 7 cm in length, were prepared from a 1.27-cm-diam rod, with two parallel longitudinal flat faces each approximately 3 cm in length. The specimens were annealed for 2 hr in an oxygen-free capsule, at temperatures in the range 430° to 540°C, to give varying grain sizes, and, prior to testing, the grain size of each was carefully determined using the linear intercept method. This revealed that the grains were elongated -0.5 to 5 pct in the longitudinal direction. Testing was carried out in Dennison Model T47E machines under constant load at temperatures in the range 150" to 300°C. At temperatures of 200°C and below, tests were conducted in air with the polished flat faces coated with a thin film of silicone oil to prevent oxidation; at higher temperatures, an argon atmosphere was used. To determine v,, each test was interrupted at regular increments of strain and the specimen removed from the machine. THESE notes are based on the megascopic study of a suite of 2,400 specimens of minerals and ores from the Butte mines, combined with field observations at intervals over a period of several years. The estimate of average vein composition is based on field acquaintance with the veins. It is probably correct in its broader proportions, and should be of use for comparison. ORIGINALLY the Babbitt experimental plant grinding circuit consisted of one rod mill 101/2 ft diam by 12 ft long in open circuit followed by two ball mills 101/2 ft diam* 12 ft long in parallel cir- the slow-speed ball mills. The next step was to improve rod mill operation by changing the speed of this mill. Such an attack would affect only one mill and would allow slower speed on the ball mills. The rod mill, as originally purchased, operated at 15.45 rpm. Additional pinions were purchased to test this mill at 16.45, 17.45, and 18.45 rpm. When the mill speed was increased by the use of these pinions, rod breakage with this short mill increased out of all proportion to the improved grinding, until at 18.45 rpm breakage became as high as 7 lb per

THERE are about sixty bodies which chemists call elements ; the simplest forms of matter which they have been able to extract from the rocky crust of our earth, its waters, and its atmosphere. These substances are distributed in very unequal quantities, and in very different manners. As regards the frequency of these elements in nature, neglecting for the present those which constitute air and water, and confining ourselves to the solid matters of the earth's crust, there are a few which are exceedingly abundant, making up nine-tenths, if not ninety-five hundredths, of the rocks so far as known to us. The elements of which silica, alumina, lime, magnesia, potash, and soda are oxides, are very common, and occur almost everywhere. There are others which are much rarer, being found in comparatively small quantities. Many of these rarer elements are, however, of great importance in the economy of nature. Such are the common metals and other substances used in the arts, which occur in nature in quantities relatively very minute, but which have been collected by various agencies, and thus made available for the wants of man. It is chiefly of the well-known metals, iron, copper, silver, and gold, that I propose to speak to-night; but there are two other elements not classed among the metals, which I shall notice for the reason that their history is extremely important, and will, moreover, enable us to comprehend more clearly some points in that of the metals themselves. I speak of phosphorus and iodine. Tlze condition of superplasticity or neck-resistanl flow that results front high strain-rate sensitivity has been observed in isothermal tension tests on several titanium alloys and one of zirconium hi general, il was associated with reasonably fine-grain micro-structures being stvained in the transformation range at rates below i - 10 -3 sec-&apos;. The metallographic mean-free path, L, was measured at room temperature after rapid cooling from the temperature of test-ing. The flow stress of Ti-GAL-4V at 950°C was proportional to La at different constanl <; the value of a decreased with increasing. E but at E< 1.5 x 10-4 sec-1 it varied only from 0.9 to 1.25. The findings were interpreted to mean that viscous boundary shear is the rate-controlling process of deformation at high levels of strain rate sensitivity in these materials. Elongation of over 1000 pet could be obtained, but a1 temperatures so high and rates so low that any practical application of the full effect would probably be difficult. As the transformation range was narrowed, by turning from Ti-6AL-4V to Ti-5Al-2.5sn to nomznally pure titanium, the allowable temperature varialion was correspondingly reduced. Superplasticily was not found in Armco iron, presumably because the transformation range was too narrow to allow the developtnenl of a reasonably stable microstructure for isolhermal lesting. THE work represented by this paper grew out of a recent study of texture hardening in a(hcp) titanium and zirconium-alloy sheet,&apos; of which part has now been published.2 It was found that, with heating, the tensile plastic-anisotropy index, R,* was decreased from well above 1 towards 1 as the temperature range for the a(hcp) -ß(bcc) phase change was entered. The clearest example of that trend is illustrated with previously unpublished data in Fig. 1. It might have been thought that such a development resulted simply from introduction of the cubic and therefore plastically less anisotropic phase. However, the accompanying change in the index of tensile strain-rate sensitivity, m = a log a/a log E, was rapidly upwards, to a high of 0.85 in some cases (also illustrated in Fig. 1). At the same time, the total tensile elongation rose to a maximum and the flow strength dropped away as R (and m) approached 1. Taken together, the observations cannot be understood as resulting from the presence of cubic phase, per se. It has been concluded instead that they reflect the largely noncrystallographic deformation which characterizes superplasticity. As demonstrated in other recent work? a necessary condition for super-plasticity is strain-rate sensitivity of flow stress sufficiently high that m is above a lower limit of -0.3. The origin of large m has been traced, in turn, to grain size so small that a substantial amount of viscous deformation is introduced by such processes as Nabarro-Herring diffusional flow4 and/or grain boundary shear.5,6 Because of problems in the processing of titanium and zirconium alloys—problems of high strength, limited ductility, and excessive springback, originating largely in slip resistance-it was natural to wonder if something useful might be done with superplasticity in those materials. Therefore experiments were made for more closely identifying and generally bounding the phenomenon with temperature and strain-rate limits, before attempting to decide about its exploitation. The results are being reported here. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The two of primary interest were the titanium alloys of nominal composition (in wt pct) 5A1-2.5Sn and 6A1-4V. Others were a 4A1-1/4O2 titanium alloy, titanium of commercial purity (RC-70), Zircaloy-4. and Armco iron. All were received as annealed 3/16 in. thick sheet, except RC-70 which was & in. thick, and tested in that condition. Details of transformation temperature and grain size are given in Table I. The results of dilatometry for the measurement of transformation temperatures were unsatisfactory. Data were finally obtained by metallographic examination of each specimen after test, to determine from the amount of transformed 4 where the specimen had been heated in relation to the critical temperatures. SILICON is one of the most important elements in the metallurgy of aluminum. It is always present in small amounts in the ordinary grades of "pure" aluminum, and hence in all alloys made therefrom. Within the last few years binary alloys containing up to 13. per cent, of silicon have come into extensive use for castings. Silicon is also added, beyond the amount present as an impurity, in alloys containing one or more other elements such as copper, manganese, magnesium and nickel. The binary aluminum-silicon alloys are not yet heat treated to any extent in commercial practice, although, as will be shown, their properties are affected to a very considerable degree by heat treatment. There are other aluminum alloys that develop higher strength, but the special characteristics of the silicon alloys may well lead to the application of heat-treating processes on a commercial scale. The role of silicon in the heat treatment of aluminum alloys is more important than would be indicated by consideration of the binary alloys alone, because many of the alloys that are heat treated in regular commercial practice contain some silicon in addition to that derived from the aluminum ingot as an impurity. Among these may be mentioned the heat-treated 195 alloy castings, and the wrought alloys 258, Special 178 and 51S of the Aluminum Co. of America, and the German wrought alloy, Lautal. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results of experimental work and the conclusions derived therefrom regarding the heat treatment of the binary aluminum-silicon alloys. The products heat treated included forgings, chill castings and both "normal" and "modified" sand castings.

THE history of the production of sulfur from salt domes in Louisiana and Texas originated with the operations of the Union Sulphur Co. at Sulphur, La., followed by the Freeport Sulphur Co. at Bryanmound, Tex. Including the present development of Grande Ecaille by the Free-port Sulphur Co., which constitutes the tenth dome to be equipped for the production of sulfur in the Gulf Coast, less than 10 per cent of all the known domes have proved to contain sulfur in commercial quantities. The Grande Ecaille salt dome is in the tidal marsh of the Mississippi River delta in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. It is 10 miles southwest of the right descending bank of the river approximately 45 miles below the city of New Orleans and is within 4 miles of the shore line of the Gulf of Mexico.

Want of knowledge on the part of experts from abroad respecting the amalgamation-system, known as the Mexican or patio process, has been the cause in this country of trouble to many foreign mining companies. This process has not been looked upon by their managers as a satisfactory method of treating silver-ores, and they prefer to employ others, which, although more modern, and often more profitable in other countries, have not proved to be so under the exceptional conditions of this country, where labor is cheap and paid in silver, while fuel is very dear. The cause of this error of judgment is probably the inexact information which has been furnished by several authors respecting the economical results of the patio process. This treatment is not suitable for silver-ores of every kind. Simple sulphides of silver are best adapted to it, and, next to these, the combinations of complex sulphides, viz., pyrargyrite, polybasite, stephanite, proustite, etc. Chlorides, bromides and iodides of silver are considered rebellious ; argentiferous galena, blende, bournonite, as also argentiferous arsenical pyrites of iron and copper, are absolutelg unsuited to this treatment. Experience has proved that high-grade ores do not give as satisfactory results as those of mediurn grades, as, for instance, carrying from 1 to 2 kilos of silver per metrical ton. The patio process, as actually practiced in this district, comprises the following operations: 1. The ore is crushed in a dry state in a roller-mill, reducing it to pea-size, from which uniform samples, and, in consequence, correct assays, can be obtained. 2. It is then thrown into the arrastra, and pulverized with water, so fine that it will pass through an 80-mesh screen.

AMONG the comparatively few A radical changes in mining equipment in recent years is the introduction and use to an ever greater degree of detachable bits for rock drills. Just how great the possible field for economic application of this innovation is, and to what ex- tent detachable bits are used instead of the conventional type of drill steel, are matters of conjecture. Just as a rough approximation, one might conceive that at least three-quarters of the drilling done in mines today could better be performed by steel with detachable bits, instead of only about one-quarter as at present.

The academic community and the larger and more sophisticated mining companies have largely rejected the older mineral valuation methods such as the Hoskold and Morkill concepts and replaced them with "discounted cash flow" (DCF) techniques. The relevancy and usefulness of the older methods have been questioned primarily on the basis of their underlying assumptions that mining companies do not have numerous alternative investments and must use sinking funds deposited at market or "safe" rates of return to recover the purchase price of mineral reserves. The ability to reinvest in numerous (often nonmining) alternative business ventures, the changing purchasing power of the dollar, corporate income and other taxes, depreciation and depletion allowances, and modern financial management practice all militate against the continued use of the older valuation methods, especially for the larger mining companies. Small mining companies and individuals still use these methods largely out of habit and familiarity. The Hoskold Mineral Reserve Valuation Method The Hoskold method was developed prior to the evolution of modern accounting practices and before the days of the corporate income tax. At the time of its development, annual earnings of the firm were represented by the difference between cash revenues and cash expenses and were not subject to taxation by the government. Thus, earnings at that time were equivalent to what is today known as cash flow.

Surrounded by a thickly settled farming country, from which to draw native labor, within easy distance of anthracite and bituminous coal, with ores and limestone near at hand, and with the Susquehanna River as a never-failing water supply, Harrisburg has advantages for manufacturing which warrant the investment of the capital that has already been made, and has a future as a manufacturing city second only to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. THE PENNSYLVANIA STEEL COMPANY, L. S. BENT, SUPERINTENDENT. The works of this company, the largest in Harrisburg, lie between the Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia and Reading Railroads, on. the Pennsylvania Canal, and are essentially devoted to the manufacture of Bessemer steel rails. Capital stock, $2,000,000; invested in business, $5,000,000; wages per month, $80,000; employs 2000 men; capacity, 100,000 tons of rails per year, which is being increased to 130,000 tons. The plant, as it now stands, comprises five Bessemer converters, two 7-ton and three 8-ton converters, two 15-ton open-hearth furnaces in operation, and two 30-ton open-hearth furnaces in course of construction, one blooming mill, one rail mill, seven steam hammers, two blast furnaces in operation, two blast furnaces in course of construction, foundry, pattern $hop, machine shop, blacksmith shop, and frog shop, and merchant mill in course of construction. THE province of Saskatchewan, situated in the center of the Great Plains region of Canada, has, like most prairie areas, an essentially agricultural economy. Most of its population of about 860,000 is located in the southern half of the province in the farming and ranching areas. To the north of the prairie is a broad forested belt supporting a considerable timbering industry, and the northern one third of the province is glaciated pre-Cambrian rock formation. This latter area is relatively barren of vegetation, but the presence within it of a considerable variety of radioactive, noble and base metals, and industrial minerals has been shown by prospecting in recent years.&apos; Glacial Geology The Keewatin ice sheet, considered to have accumulated in the country to the west of Hudson Bay in Pleistocene time, covered at its maximum advancement almost all of Saskatchewan and extended south of the international boundary. Only in the Cypress Hills in the southwest and around Wood Mountain in the south central portion of the province did the preglacial formations escape the action for this glacial period. The bedrock of the plains and forest areas therefore is overlain by moraines and modified glacial drift, which vary in thickness from a few feet to 400 or 500 ft.&apos; Glacial action in the pre-Cambrian area of the province was largely erosional, most of the more recent formations and some of the pre-Cambrian rock being transported out of the area to the south and west. It has been estimated that about 13 pct of this area is composed of lakes and rivers not too adaptable to rail or water transportation, so that until the use of aviation for exploration purposes became general, development of the area was slow. To the south, the heavy mantle of glacial drift has to some extent deterred the discovery of industrial minerals in the bedrock underlying the forest and prairie regions3 At the same time, this drift contains numerous deposits of those most elementary and necessary industrial minerals, sand and gravel. Sedimentary Basin The major feature of the sedimentary deposits underlying the plains regions is the basinal structure known as the Moose Jaw syncline, which runs from the southeast corner of the province in a northwesterly direction. To the west of this syncline the formations curve upward, then have been faulted and further upthrust to appear at the surface in the foothills of the Rockies in Alberta; to the east and north they curve upward into Manitoba and northern Saskatchewan, but the surface contacts are covered mostly with glacial drift.238 The axis of the syncline dips to the southeast, so that there is also an upward trend of the formations along the axis to the northwest. In illustration of the regional structure underlying the province, the pre-Cambrian basement has been logged in drillholes at the following depths in several locations: Ogema (south central), 9390 ft; Gronlid (northeast), 2599 ft; Vera (northwest), 4422 ft; Big River (north northwest), 2348 ft. Fig. 1 indicates the general surface geology of the province, ignoring such glacial overburden as may overlie many of the bedrock formations. Also indicated is the approximate location of the axis of the Moose Jaw syncline.&apos; Industrial Minerals Clays: The province is fortunate in possessing a widespread distribution of clays of ceramic value, ranging from those used for heavy structural products to the high grade pottery and china clays. Shales suitable for brick and tile production are found in the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary formations across the south of the province where the glacial drift is thin or nonexistent. Many deposits of glacial lake clays suitable for such wares are found scattered over the rest of the province south of the pre-Cambrian area. The Whitemud formation of the Upper Cretaceous is a narrow sedimentary band of secondary clays found intermittently at points across the south of the province where glacial action did not disturb or remove them.&apos; In the southwest corner of the province, around Eastend in the Frenchman River valley, the refractory clays of this formation are contaminated somewhat with iron compounds or other alteration products of basaltic rocks. This eliminates the use of those clays in true whitewares, as they fire to creamy buff shades at the lower temperatures and to a blue-specked grey at cone 8 to 12, (2280°F to 2390°F), the range commonly used in firing whiteware. However, for use in the production of colored artware, caneware, stoneware or crockery, and sewerpipe, this type of clay makes an excellent body that requires little or no addition of flint, feldspar, or other fluxing materials such as are required in the higher class of ware.&apos; It is not a grade of clay that can be shipped great distances to the manufacturing centers, but a market for considerable tonnages has developed at nearby Medicine Hat, where cheap natural gas is available for the firing of the ware. Farther east in the south central portion of the province, the clays of the Whitemud formation are generally more refractory and white burning. The formation is divided into three zones, consisting of white clays, brown shale, and white sandy clays.

There has been a considerable amount of research developed which shows that the close contour cutting of an excavation prior to removal of the central core will increase ground stability while concommitantly, reducing the number and size of blastholes required to create the excavation. To date, the industrial development of this technique has however, centered on the development of equipment based on simple cutter movement and mechanical rock cutting. The advent of reliable field operable high pressure waterjet cutting equipment with the very low reactive force required to hold the head in position has opened the way for a much smaller and more manueverable system. The advent of small, micro-computers allows the programming of accurate profiles for cutting tools on excavation equipment. The combination of these two technologies will allow the generation of complex as well as simple, excavation profiles and lead to the potential pre-support of the opening before major excavation is completed. A brief description of the necessary components and their functions is encorporated in the initial prototype design as given.

THe conversion of the beehive coke plants, in this country, to byproduct plants has been slow, because the coal supplies were near the centers of the steel industry. With the growth of this industry, especially with its development around Chicago, it became necessary to transport large tonnages of coal from the eastern districts and then convert it into coke. The losses due to transportation costs were partly offset by the value of the byproducts recovered. To save the transportation costs, it was desirable that the coal deposits of Indiana and Illinois be utilized. This coal had always been classified as non-coking; it was also considered unsuitable for the metallurgical field because of the high ash and sulfur contents. The conditions, however, were promising enough to start experimental and development work, which crystallized in the design of the Roberts coke oven. The fundamental features of most coke ovens, with respect to the application of heating gas and the recovery of byproducts, are the same and, in the last few years, the tendency has been toward the better application of heating to the walls, higher thermal efficiency, and, by the control of heating conditions, the increase of byproduct yields. Structural features also have been improved and the use of high-grade refractory material has allowed the use of higher temperatures with the resulting higher rated capacity per oven per day. Great improvements have been made in both recuperators and regenerators, particularly with reference to the individualizing of each oven with respect to its adjacent oven, so that each can be operated as a unit if desired. The highest development of the flue type of oven has been applying individual regenerators for the recovery of waste heat. After some research work, it was found that the high-volatile Illinois coals could be utilized for coke by obtaining the better application and control of the heating conditions in the oven. Most of this high-volatile coal that had been used gave a good coke structure under certain conditions.
