Charles T. Holland (Head, Dept. of Mining Engineeri*, Virginia Polytechnical Inst., Blacksburg, Va.) Mr. Wuerker has presented a very interesting discussion of the use of triaxial test methods for investigating the strength properties of rocks. Such methods, no doubt, eventually will develop considerable information of interest to those concerned with the design of mine layouts, particularly in the field of pillar design. From his discussion of my recent article, "Cause and Occurrence of Coal Mine Bumps" (Holland Mining Engineering 1958, p. 933-1002), it is evident that in one place at least I did not make my meaning clear to him and perhaps others. To clear the matter up I think it best to quote from the article, somewhat more fully than did Mr. Wuerker, as follows: "4) In actual operations — because rocksare not perfectly elastic, homogeneous, nor isotropic and because local yield does occur — the maximum stress as demonstrated by Phillips (Ref. 22, pp. 64, 65) and indicated by much experience in mining, does not occur at the walls of the opening but at a short distance inside the pillar. Furthermore, the maximum stress does not reach as great a value as theoretical considerations and laboratory experimental methods indicate.* Actual distance inside the pillar, measured from the wall, at which the maximum stress exists, has not been determined. Observations in many mines, however, indicate that this distance could have a mini-value of one to six or eight times the bed thickness and that it is probably affected by width and height of the opening, depth of cover, and relative values of the elasticity and plasticity of materials comprising the roof, floor, and coal seam. The actual value of the stress produced probably lies between the theoretical maximum and the average stress concentration that would be produced if the weight of the strata above the unsupported opening were evenly distributed over the pillars for a distance equal to the opening width." The footnote reference in the above quotation referred to the following: "*For example, the Pocahontas No. 4 coal bed in southern West Virginia is mined under cover up to 1800 ft thick. Development openings are driven 18 to 20 ft wide, and the bed is about 6 ft thick. According to the work of Panek, the tangential wall stress at mid-bed height under these conditions would reach values between 4000 and 5000 psi. Actual tests of 3-in. cubes of this coal show its compressive strength would be much less than this, perhaps as low as 400 psi. Yet the pillars usually show no evidence of failure in these headings. In this same bed at a depth of 800 ft, the author has seen an opening 225 ft between supports lying between two old groves approximately 1100 ft apart. According to the theoretical considerations, the stress in the pillar walls would have been about 18,000 psi, yet the pillar showed little or no evidence of weight. In view of these observations, it is clear that the wall stress does not attain the maximum values indicated by theory." (Underlining added to original wording.) By referring to Fig. 2A of my paper it will be noted that theoretically the maximum pillar stress would occur at the pillar wall, i.e., at the passageway surface of the pillar. Obviously this cannot be correct in the cases of stress ranging from 4000 to 18000 psi since the coal at the surface of the pillar is under no constraint and cannot have a strength much greater than 400 or 500 psi. Hence, my conclusion that the maximum stress does not occur at the wall but back in the pillar some distance from the wall. Since these stresses are pushed back in the pillar from the wall, it is also obvious that the loads transferred to the pillar from the opening will be spread over a greater area and hence Pillar stresses will not rise to the values postulated by theory and photoelastic experiment. Further since to visual inspection the coal along the pillar wall did not appear to be failed the conclusion was reached that the stress shift was caused by local elastic or plastic yield and by difference in the elastic modulus of the rocks composing the mine floor, mine roof, and coal bed. Later on under the heading "Strength of Mine Pillars" (pages 1000-1002) the effects of constraint is briefly described. Also a formula taking into account constraint is developed relating pillar strength to the uniaxial strength of coal and the L/T ratio of the pillar. Since my paper was written, reports of experiments conducted in South Africa (Denkhaus, et. al., 1959), in Sweden (Hast 19581, and in Canada (McInnes, et.al., 1959) reveal that the conclusion expressed relative to the existence of a low stress area existing around the edges of pillars and solid faces as described above is generally correct. February, 1926) The Pioneer mining district, better known as the Superior district, from its principal town, is located in Pinal County in south-central Arizona about 80 miles east of Phoenix and 22 miles west of Miami. The region embraces a, confused series of mountain ranges of moderate height but precipitous slopes, between which lie irregular valleys filled with alluvial detritus. The average elevation is about 2800 ft. in the valleys and the summits of the ranges reach 2000 ft. above this. Superior is situated on the north bank of Queen Creek where it emerges from one of those ranges into a more or less basin-shaped valley. The drainage of Queen Creek is to the southwest and the flood waters spread out and lose themselves in the desert northeast of Florence, the county seat of Pinal County. PETROLEUM industry forecasts are constantly made and revised but are not in the nature of predictions. Particularly in the field of demand, many of the factors are far beyond control by the producing industry. Supply reacts on demand and demand reacts on supply. Competent economists in the oil business forecasted a year ago, on the basis of experience, that demand would now be at a much lower level than it is. This increased demand increased the price of crude oil and products, and in turn those increased prices have brought forth increased supply. A reduction in demand would lead to a reduction in supply. Shortages are now world-wide, and costs of secondary importance, so if there were extra supplies in California they would be moved into what are termed "unnatural markets." For example, Argentina is in the market today for California gasoline; that is an unnatural market because of the greater transportation distances from California to Argentina than from normal sources.

THE steadily rising flood of gold production from all parts of the world has created an avalanche of rumors regarding the stability of the present price of this metal. Markets have been unsettled from Johannesburg to London from New York and Toronto to Melbourne, despite repeated denials from, American and British authorities of any immediate intention to alter the price. Various economists and financial writers have blossomed forth with predictions that the price would be set at the old level of $20.67 per oz.; some have even been so brash as to state That a price of $15 would be necessary to bring production within control. These effusions, based entirely upon monetary theories and with no regard to production costs, serve to confuse rather than clarify the situation.

A short time ago, I had occasion to cast iron plates 1 in. thick, direct from metal containing Si, 0.51; 8, 0.045; Mn, 0.75; and P, 0.094 per cent. Much to my astonishment, I found that there was no trouble in planing them; whereas, if cupolaimetal of like composition had been used,*the planing would have been a difficult operation. I have often noticed a greater fluidity or " life " in furnace-metal, as compared with the cupola-product. Iron can be seen flowing down the furnace-runners from 50 to 100 ft., and reaching the last pig-bed in satisfactory condition, while cupola-metal might have solidified before it had flowed so far. I have seen Bessemer iron, which, on account of its low phosphorus-content, does not have the " life " of ordinary foundry-iron, held in a 30-ton ladle for nearly an hour and a half; and after skimming off the coke-dust, it still had to be cooled off' considerably before being cast. As a general proposition, it is known that the lower sulphur-content and the frequently higher temperature of direct-metal, compared with the same iron remelted in the cupola, has much to do with its greater life; yet some problems connected with this phenomenon seem to call for further study. For instance, furnace-metal containing more than 1 per cent. of silicon holds carbon, which is separated later as "kish." This separation does not take place to any great degree while the metal is very hot; but during its gradual cooling, at times, the kish is given off in such large quantities as to cover the ground from 20 to 30 ft. around the ladle. In making castings of direct-metal, especially with a high content of silicon, the separation of kish becomes an annoyance. (communication to the Secretary*) :-The very interesting results obtained by Prof. Hofman and his assistants came to my attention when I had temporarily assumed charge of the metallurgical department of the Missouri School of Mines, and had found it, pending the completion of a new building, lacking a furnace in which to roast ore preparatory to the customary lead blast-furnace run. An attempt at lime-roasting had been already determined upon, but the use of a charge which would make a slag of definite composition was a new idea. The results following were obtained by Messrs. Aubrey Fellows, J. C. Long, E. R. Wash, and Dr. T. C. Tseung, under my supervision. It is regretted that the data are not more complete; but the work was done simply incidentally to securing the desired ore for the blast-furnace, with no idea of obtaining any results of especial interest. It is submitted because of the metallic lead obtained, no notice of which has been seen elsewhere. The ore was an aggregate of several lots of concentrates, apparently from Missouri ores. The analysis follows, with that of the limestone and sandstone used, as far as made:. Ore, SiO2, 3.04; Fe, 0.77; CaO, 2.53; Pb, 68.74; Zn, 5.77; S, 13.9 per cent.; limestone, SiO2, 1.0 ; CaO, 54.35 per cent.; sandstone, SiO2, 99.8 per cent. The converter was made in the shops from a sheet of No. 14 iron riveted in the shape of a truncated cone, 20 in. in diameter at the top, 15 in. at the bottom and 22 in. high. As in organic nature certain animal and vegetable forms have undergone modifications, and thus, as it were, fitted themselves to live in a new environment, so it has been found possible in certain instances to form new metallic combinations which are practically immune to the natural conditions that exist on the earth at the present time. A few of the metals, such as gold, silver, and the metals of the platinum group, are found native, but the commoner heavy metals are nearly always found in the form of oxides or sulphides. For a number of years I have made experiments with a view to finding certain metallic combinations or alloys which would not only resist oxidation and other harmful influences, but would also possess valuable physical properties, which would render them fit for special service. The first decisive step made in this direction was the discovery of an alloy of nickel and chromium in 1898. The properties of this alloy have already been described in a previous paper.' Immediately following the discovery of the nickel-chromium alloy, I produced an alloy of cobalt and chromium, which has likewise been described in the reference given, but the range of proportion between the cobalt and chromium is so great, and the combination is modified to such a marked degree by the introduction of other substances, that I have felt justified in reading another paper on this subject, describing more fully my researches in this particular direction. mean to say that these explosions are mechanical, but that the ejectment of the stock, throwing out of tops, etc., are mechanical. I see no reason at present, although I have had almost no experience in the use of large quantities of Mesabi ore, to change my ideas on the subject. That these explosions should follow irregular working or slipping in the furnace, I think can be explained. I have noticed that immediately following slips there is little or no settling of the stock on top, although there is no lessening of the volume of gas passing into the stoves and boilers. Supposing that, after a slip of 3 or 4 feet, the filling continues, but for some distance from the 'top the stock fails to move: there would be a much better chance for the deposited carbon to clog interstices in the stock, and for the additional effect in the same direction of the fine ore in the charge, than if the stock were properly settling. Under such conditions it is easily supposable that the openings would be entirely closed, or closed so tightly that the pressure below the obstruction would be raised to a point approaching the blast-pressure, or to a point high enough to force a passage or an enlargement of the small passages which may remain. When this occurs, gas from below under pressure carries with it large quantities of deposited carbon and fine ore; if the case is aggravated, coke, stone, bell, etc. As soon as the red-hot deposited carbon meets the air there are perfect conditions for a dust explosion, which naturally follows, the same as in a coal-mine or flour-mill.

The same limitations' that characterized 1931 existed in the old fields of Indiana and Illinois during 1932. Prices remained low. The average for the year for Illinois and southwestern Indiana was $1.032 as against $0.852 for 1931 and $1.616 for 1930. In September a curtailment of production of about 25 per cent became effective and was continued to the end of the year. There were no new discoveries and very little wildcatting was done. Considering the age of the wells, and the number still producing, there were few abandonments. The most outstanding thing about the old fields in these states is their long continued productivity. Illinois The fields along the southeast end of the LaSalle anticline had their peak of 33,686,000 bbl. in 1908. In 1932, with a 25 per cent restriction for 355 months, these fields produced 4,661,000 bb1.l There were 52 new completions (most of them in old territory) and of these 33 were dry, 8 were gas, and 11 were oil wells. The new oil wells had a total initial of 102 bbl., or an average of 9.3 bbl. per well. Nineteen of the new producers were in Crawford County. There were about 200 wells abandoned in the old southeast fields in 1932 as compared to 210 in 1931. The greatest number, 86, were in Lawrence County. To the end of 1932, the four major counties—Clark, Crawford, Lawrence and Wabash—had produced almost 394,000,000 bbl. from 92,160 acres. Better than one-half of this was produced in Lawrence County from 26,240 acres. The Dupo area of Sinclair County had no additions to production although four wells were drilled. On the Jacksonville structure in Morgan County, six gas wells with an average depth of 300 ft. were drilled to sands in the base of the Pennsylvanian. They produced an open-flow total initial of 2,000,000 cu. ft. This gas will be developed further to supply a local market.

J. A. Mathews,* Syracuse, N. Y. (written discussion?).-It is interesting to note how frequently we hear of some process that is going to revolutionize the tool-steel business. I don't know why it is, but every one seems to have it in for us poor tool-steel men. About 15 years ago, a good-sized plant was built in Syracuse for the manufacture of cast tools of malleable iron. The promoter of the scheme claimed to have a secret, process that had been given to him by a tramp to whom he gave a lift along a dusty road. The widows and orphans invested liberally in the securities of the company without consulting the men established in the machine-tool business in Syracuse. About two years later, when the sheriff's sale occurred, the secret, which was carried on the books of the company as an asset valued at $2,000,000, brought $15 at auction. A little later another concern started on the theory of replacing scrap high-speed steel with new high-speed steel tools made therefrom. THE chance that a Howe Memorial Lecturer will be able to refer back to a personal contact with the distinguished metallurgist for whom this lectureship is named grows steadily smaller. I did not have the pleasure of his personal acquaintance, but I did receive from him in 1916, quite unexpectedly, a letter commenting on a paper that I had recently published27 on "Types of Prismatic Structure in Igneous Rocks." The paper was written for geologists and petrologists, but it had an application, naturally, to the crystallization of iron and steel in a mold. The letter impressed me at the time, and still does, with the breadth of Professor Howe's interests and his perseverance in keeping up with the progress of any branch of knowledge that had metallurgical connotations. SCOPE OF THE LECTURE During several years preceding the date mentioned I had worked in collaboration with Arthur L. Day and E. T. Allen8 at the Geophysical Laboratory, Carnegie Institution of Washington, on the temperature scale as defined by the nitrogen thermometer at high temperatures. Later (1928-1947) I had the opportunity of helping to apply this experience to the pyrometric problems of the steel industry. Because of the range of its temperatures, the multiplicity of the methods used, and the variety of its purposes, pyrometry in the open-hearth process has always offered a fertile field for both research and development. I am therefore devoting an hour to the subject of temperatures in the basic open-hearth furnace, the furnace that makes most of our steel in the United States. I would direct your attention particularly to the choice of the first two words in the title of the Lecture. One sometimes hears or reads of the "temperature of such-and-such a furnace," as if it were a single, measurable, characteristic quantity. I need hardly emphasize to any one who has ever operated a furnace or a kiln that "temperature of the furnace" is a meaningless phrase. Even if we confine our attention to the space enclosed by the roof, walls, and hearth of an open-hearth furnace, it is doubtful whether any such space has ever been so uniform in temperature that the phrase would have a meaning. In any furnace, there are many different temperatures, capable of being measured at many different places, and actually being measured for several different purposes. These pyrometric purposes, methods, and results, if given in detail, would expand this lecture into a book on the basic open-hearth process. I must therefore confine myself to a statement of the range of temperatures as they have been observed in various parts of the furnace, indicating in a general way why they are measured, and mentioning the methods that are available without attempting to describe these

THE St. Joseph Lead Co. became interested in the Tri-State district in 1921 through acquisition of prospecting and development rights on approximately 20,000 acres of land extending northeastward from the Picher mining field, mostly in Kansas. Prospecting with churn drills was begun the same year and the first commercial ore body was found on the Jarrett tract at the then northern limit of the main Picher field. Operations at this mine began in 1923. Kansas Explorations, Inc., was organized in 1923 by the St. Joseph Lead Co. as a wholly-owned subsidiary to carry on its operations in the Tri-State District from an office at Joplin, Mo. As prospecting of the original acreage proved largely negative, attention was subsequently turned to other sections of the district. Numerous additional leases were acquired and prospected. The Company was successful in developing into operating properties the Jarrett, Isherwood, Robinson, Sullivan and Lotson tracts and, in more recent years, the Ritz, Snapp, Buckingham, Gibson and Jasper mines.

Elastic constants have been determined on single crystals of maximum-melting-temperature NiAl compound (50.6 at. pct Al) at 25°C. Temperature variations of Young&apos;s modulus in the three principal crystal directions between -150°C and +800°C exhibit no anomalies similar to those repovted for the isomor-phous compounds brass and AuCd. It is concluded that the ordered CsCl structure is stable throughout the temperuture range investigated NICKEL aluminide is a congruently melting inter-metallic compound of CsCl (B2) structure, stable over a rather wide composition range (40 to 54 pct Al). It exhibits a lattice-parameter maximum of a. = 2.883A at 50.6 pct 1,&apos; at which composition the excess aluminum atoms are randomly distributed on the vacant nickel sites;&apos; at higher nickel compositions the excess nickel atoms replace substitutionally in aluminum sites, while at higher aluminum compositions vacancies are present in the nickel sublattice.&apos; For compositions close to NiAl no significant variation in order has been observed at temperatures up to 900°C.3 At high nickel (65 pct) compositions the existence of a martensitic structural transformation has been reported.4 NiAl is isomorphous with the ordered B-brass structure and with the high-temperature structures of AuCd and TiNi alloys close to equiatomic composition. All of these exhibit anomalous elastic behavior as the temperature of their diffusionless transformation to lower-symmetry structures is approached.&apos;-&apos; This behavior has been explained as indicative of low stability of the CsCl structure in these compounds.8 The present paper reports the experimental determination of the elastic compliances of single-crystal NiA1. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) Specimens. Polycrystalline NiAl was prepared by induction melting of carbonyl nickel and high-purity aluminum and casting into solid copper molds in gettered helium atmosphere. The castings thus produced were canned in mild steel and impact-extruded at 1100 to 1200°C to 38-in.diam rod. After the steel sheath was pickled off, the rods were converted to single crystals by repeated high-frequency satisfactorily produced the desired orientations in the form of crystals 38 in. diam by 8-12 in. long. These were subsequently center less-ground to 7 to 8 mm diam by 12 cm long, electropolished (in 80 pct methanol, 20 pct HzSO, at 25°C and 15 v), and their axial orientation determined to 1 deg by the Laue back-reflection technique. The rod dimensions were determined to 0.01 mm and the densities determined from geometrical dimensions and the weight of every specimen. The average density was 5.905 0.005 g per cu cm. 2) Elastic Data Measurements. Room-temperature elastic compliances Sii were obtained by determining to 0.1 cps the fundameGtal resonance frequencies in the longitudinal and torsional vibration modes. At these frequencies the following relations hold: E =p(2lfif =pvl= Sn- 2r[Sll- S12- -£„«] g -P(2iftf = pvf = (s<« - fr(sii - sw - ±s»y where vl and vt are the velocities, and f andft the resonance frequencies of the longitudinal and torsional waves, respectively; 1 is the length of the specimen, and r is the direction cosine factor—{cos2 a • cos2 0 + cos2 a . cos2 y + cos2 0 ¦ cos2 Y}. Given three crystals of orientations (loo), (110), and (111)) i.e., F = 0, 14, and 13, we can obtain six equations for the three unknown compliances, thus providing adequate internal check. Mode mixing can readily occur in the relatively long wavelength resonance utilized here. This could cause a significant error in the torsion wave velocities calculated from the apparent resonance frequenies. Therefore, throughout the present work, a method, described previosl,&apos; was used to ensure that no significant mode mixing took place at resonance. The apparatus used was originally designed for the Elastomat, Magnaflux Corp.. Chicago, 111. determination of flexural vibration resonance frequencies. At room temperature torsional vibration mode could be established by suitable positioning of the thin wires from the input and pick-up transducers, and longitudinal mode by cementing thin magnetic foils at the ends of the specimen, and inducing the vibration by means of electromagnetic transducers. Only flex-ural resonance frequencies could, however, be obtained reproducibly over the temperature range of -150 to 800°C. These data are considerably less accurate, the error in the modulus being estimated at -0.6 pct from the specimen dimensions and the room-temperature Poisson&apos;s ratio. The reproducibility of the resonance frequencies in repeat runs was, however, to better than l in 15,000, hence the relative elastic modulus error less than 0.02 pct. Therefore, the temperature variation of the principal Young&apos;s moduli obtained by flexural resonance, relative to room-temperature values, is believed to be satisfactorily accurate.

During the year 1945, the drilling pace in West Texas increased above that in the year 1944, and represented the highest number of well completions since 2941. The 1680 new wells drilled 8,287,958 ft. of hole for a per well average of 4933 ft. This depth is approximately 30o. ft. deeper than the average for the year 1944. Although the deepest well drilled in West Texas (Phillips Petroleum Company&apos;s Ada Price No. 1, in Pecos County) was completed during the year. 1944 to a depth of 15,279 ft. and tested the Ellen-burger horizon, the producing depth record for West Texas was set during the year 1945 with the completion of Amerada Petroleum Corporation&apos;s Jones No. I-A, in the Jones Ranch field, Gaines County, which now is producing at 11,422 ft. from the Devonian formation.

From the known laws of physical chemistry I believe it can be shown that progressive mass movement of water solutions in channels has seldom been the means of ore-concentration in veins. Our large modern blast-furnaces, equipped with ore-bins, larries and mechanical means for putting stock into storage, withdrawing it therefrom, and charging it at the tunnel-head, are indeed wonderful in capacity; yet, it is admitted that, with some notable exceptions, they have disappointed us in economy—that is, in the items of low fuel-consumption, uniformity of product, freedom from slips, and reduced cost of repairs and relining. The manager who estimated the cost of pig-iron to be made in a modern plant, by taking the costs of the hand-filled furnace and deducting the amount to be saved by the mechanical appliances, has been surprised, in many cases, to find that unfavorable results in these items of economy have greatly reduced his expected gains. Is there any reason why the fuel-consumption should be greater for a modern furnace than for an older stack using the same mixture ? Certainly the equipment is much more complete, and the trouble, therefore, must lie in the management or in the character of that equipment. Everybody knows that intelligent and vigilant management is a prime requisite: that any neglect of a detail, though it may not be felt that day or week, will surely sooner or later make its appearance as an increased item of cost. But to hold the furnace-maaager responsible for the relatively poor work of the modern blast-furnace would be, I am convinced, a great injustice. For its management has received much more study and care than was given to the older types. Many furnace-managers have lost their health through worrying over this problem, and some hare lost their positions, being held responsible for results made inevitable, as I believe, by the equipment provided for them.

Z. W. Bartlett, J. C. Carrington, H. C. Petersen and K. T. Price were elected vice-presidents of the Freeport Sulphur Co. Blandford C. Burgess was transferred on January 1 to the new Defense Materials Procurement Agency as strategic materials specialist. In May the Region III headquarters of this organization was moved to London. L. C. Campbell was elected president of National Coal Assn. Mr. Campbell, who has been a member of the National&apos;s Board of Directors and Executive Committee for many years, is vice-president of the Coal Div. of the Eastern Gas & Fuel Associates and in charge of their extensive mining operations in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky. Vern H. Christoph has been transferred to Panama Canal Co., Marine Bureau, Navigation Division, Port Captains Office, as an admeasurer at Cristobal, Canal Zone. Eugene Cline, recently graduated from the University of Kentucky, has been employed by Pond Creek Pocahontas Coal Co., at Evanston, Ky. Sanford S. Cole, assistant manager of research at the Titanium div. of National Lead Co., received the Alumni Citation from his alma mater, Alfred University, Alfred, N. Y. This was in recognition of outstanding achievements and services in the field of ceramics which have brought honor to the institution. U. K. Custred, recently graduated from University of Kentucky, and may be reached now at Box 87, Monterey, Tenn. Robert E. Dwyer, executive vice-president of Anaconda since 1940, was recently elected president of this company and its subsidiaries, Chile Copper Co., Chile Exploration Co., and Andes Copper Mining Co. As president, Mr. Dwyer succeeds the late William H. Hoover who died in Butte, Mont.

The transition temperatures of 0.01 to 0.02 pct carbon steels are shown to be strongly influenced by cooling rate in the a range, quenching from A, causing a very low transition temperature even after strain aging. In a titanium-stabilized steel and in a steel with 0.05 pct C this effect is absent. NORMAL mild structural steels usually show a structure of more or less pure ferrite, as a matrix, in which cementite grains or pearlite are embedded. Of these components, ferrite is by far the most interesting one as far as ductility and brittle (cleavage) fracture are concerned. Obviously, pear-lite and carbide are by no means necessary for a cleavage crack to nucleate and grow in the ferrite, as steels with a very low carbon content (Armco iron with 0.02 pct C) have an impact transition temperature just as high as semikilled steels with 0.26 pct C.1 Although it has been argued that a very embrittling effect is to be expected from cementite, precipitated as continuous films along the ferrite grain boundaries,&apos;. " the micrographic evidence for a direct causal connection between the brittleness and these films does not seem to be very convincing. On the other hand, it has been stated that cementite particles in ferrite are able to stop ferrite cracks.4,5 In any case, the properties of the ferrite itself seem to be of overwhelming importance to the ductility of steels, justifying a thorough study of steels consisting of ferrite of different compositions, but principally free from pearlite, which means a carbon content below 0.02 pct. Such investigations have been carried out using the impact transition temperature as a criterion of the tendency to brittle fracture and have given some rather unexpected results. One result is the profound influence of carbon on the transition temperature of the steel in normalized condition. If the carbon content is reduced from 0.02 to 0.015 pct and below, a nearly discontinuous decrease in transition temperature appears even with high percentages of such elements as phosphorus and nitrogen present.
