EUROPE continued to be unsettled, financially, commercially and socially. October opened with Germany in a state of turmoil following the Government's cessation of passive resistance to the French and Belgians. In many places there were riots with much bloodshed. In Bavaria a military dictator-ship was set up in order to keep peace. In the meanwhile France continued in an uncom-promising position.. Great Britain, having been diplo-matically discredited, disappeared from any prominence in the international picture. Under the constraint of circumstances the policy of deflation in Great. Britain was temporarily abandoned. Perhaps no other course was open, for with declining trade and heavily reduced revenue, and no chance for cutting expenses propor-tionately, a check to deflation comes of its own accord. The effects of this should become manifest in the course of a few months and should appear in the form of an improved margin between the prices for commodities and the wage costs in producing them. About Oct. 20 an effort was made to set up the Rheinland as a separate republic. On Oct. 26 were published communications from Lord Curzon to Secre-tary Hughes and the latter's reply. In these Lord Curzon drew attention to the gravity of the situation in Europe and expressed the hope that France might listen to renewed suggestions for a general inquiry. Secretary Hughes promised American cooperation, in this, with the reservation that the question of inter-national debts should not enter into the situation. In the latter part of October there were military mutinies and disorders in Greece, which resulted in the reestablishment of martial law by order of Col. Plas-tiras, who is virtually the dictator of Greece. The incipient revolt was promptly crushed.

By monitoring the capacitance of abrupt p-n junctions it is possible to follow the motion of substitu-tional impurities. A p-n junction is formed by growth of silicon from an Al-Si alloy on an n-type silicon sutstrate at a temperature in the range 650" to 750°C. The diodes are etched and sorted for consistent V-I and capacitance behavior and separated into groups. After irradiation, each set with an unirradiated control set is annealed to various temperatltres for 10 mm and the capacitance remeasnred. For very heavily doped diodes (-1019 per cm3) observable capacitance changes occur at neutron fluences of >1015 per cm 3. The results may be interpreted in seceral ways, the simplest of which is to assume simple vacancy diffiision with small impurity -racancy interaction (at the diffiision, i.e. annealing temperature of 700°C). In this interpretation it is found that a typical vacancy makes about 1024 jumps and travels about 10-5 cm before disappearing. The required effective annihilation center density is about 1016per cm3 . Estimates of the vacancy-impurity interaction can be made and the above numbers correctecl, but for arty reasonable assumptions the number of vacancy sinks connot be much reduced. ThE complete annealing of radiation induced defects requires that the vacancies and interstitials either recombine, travel to the surface of the crystal, or travel to an annihilation center, e.g., a dislocation or a precipitate. If the interstitial is ignored except as a possible vacancy annihilation center at low temperatures,* the motion of vacancies may be followed by monitoring the corresponding motion of substitutional impurities. pfister2 has measured the enhanced diffusion of impurities in an asymmetric shallow diffused silicon structure by optically monitoring the junction movement. In these experiments we monitor instead the capacitance of a heavily-doped deep symmetric p-n junction. The sensitivity for this method is several orders of magnitude higher than in Pfister's technique, mainly for two reasons: 1) the junction capacitance of a heavily-doped junction is sensitive to impurity movements in the Angstrom range* com- and 2) the junction may be far from the surface which is a major annihilation center for vacancies. THE EXPERIMENT A p-n junction is formed by the epitaxial growth of silicon from an A1-Si alloy on a silicon substrate at a temperature in the range 650° to 750°C. The technique used is the transport of an aluminum melt through a temperature gradient.4 A 10-mil thick aluminum disc is sandwiched between two silicon wafers and the assembly raised to about 650° C with a temperature gradient normal to the sandwich. After about 8 hr the upper (hotter) wafer has been entirely transported and deposited epitaxially on the substrate wafer. The substrate and overgrowth resistivity are measured with a 4-point probe. The as-grown structure is lapped until the wafer is about 1/2 mm thick with the junction in the center. Contacts consisting of electroless nickel covered by electroplated rhodium are applied to both the p and n sides. The wafer is diced into square dice 1/2 to 1 mm on a side and the dice are etched sufficiently to remove approximately 1 mil of silicon. The following results are all for aluminum (p-side) and antimony (n-side) doped specimens with NA =3x 1018 per cm3, ND = 2-8 x 101A per cm3. The diodes are sorted for consistent V-I and capacitance behavior and separated into groups. After irradiation, each set with an unirradiated control set is annealed and the capacitance remeasured. A special capacitance measurement method is used to insure a low sensitivity to shunt resistance. The diode is voltage driven and the current monitored by a phase lock amplifier. It is possible to adjust the detector phase to a point where shunt resistances as low as 100 O have no effect on the reading. The diodes in this study have a capacitance in the range 1000 to 5000 picofarads and a shunt resistance in the range 100 to l06 O depending on the stage of the anneal. THEORY The theoretical problem is twofold: 1) The computation of the amount of impurity diffusion and hence the impurity profile resulting from a given amount of vacancy motion, and 2) the computation of the capacitance from the impurity profile. A comparison of the theoretical and experimental capacitance (in particular the changes) yields the amount of vacancy motion. Vacancy Motion. A convenient parameter to measure the total amount of vacancy motion is Jv the total number of vacancy jumps per unit volume. Although this parameter varies with position in the crystal, owing to vacancy annihilation at the surfaces, it is approximately independent of position far from the surfaces, i.e. in the junction region. ONSIDERABLE time and effort have been ex- pended recently in research designed to provide a better understanding of the solid state transformations leading to the permanent magnet qualities of many commercial alloys. The knowledge derived from these investigations has resulted in the development of new magnetic materials as well as improvements in some of the older materials. The permanent magnet qualities of the newer alloys having high residual inductions and high coercive force values, have been attributed to the precipitation of a second phase or an order-disorder transformation in a solid solution. The ternary Co-Fe-V alloys provide an interesting group of magnetic materials having a wide range of magnetic properties. The low vanadium alloys' possess soft magnetic properties similar to the binary Co-Fe alloys, while at higher vanadium contents (about 10 pct) interesting permanent magnet properties are obtained.2,3 Previous work by Nesbitt' on the ternary Co-Fe-V permanent magnet materials, resulted in the conclusion that the precipitation of a second phase, ?, was responsible for the permanent magnet qualities of these alloys. However, unlike the conventional precipitation hardening alloys, the ? phase, which is stable at high temperatures, is precipitated in the low temperature a phase upon aging. Recent work by Geisler and Martin"." has established that the order-disorder reaction inherent in the binary Co-Fe alloys is also present in the ternary Co-Fe-V alloys. On the basis of their investigation, it was proposed that ordering of the a phase is also a possible explanation of the mechanical and magnetic hardening in these alloys. Thus, it appears that the Co-Fe-V alloys are rather unique in that two solid state transformations are taking place which may account for the properties of these alloys. In view of these facts, the present investigation was undertaken to study the mechanism of mechanical and magnetic hardening in the 10 pct V-Co-Fe alloy with particular reference to the role of the ? phase; and to correlate the results of this study with other magnetic properties. In addition, the influence of increasing vanadium contents on the transformation of Co-Fe alloys was also undertaken to supplement the main objective of the investigation. Experimental Procedure The Co-Fe-V alloys used for study consisted of: 1—a commercial lot of Vicalloy I, a 10 pct V alloy, and 2—alloys prepared by powder metallurgy and containing 52 pct Co and 0 to 14 pct V, balance iron. The commercial alloy was received in the cast and forged condition and was used primarily for the detailed study of hardness, electrical resistivity, and magnetic properties of the 10 pct V alloy. The powder metallurgy alloys were prepared from electrolytic iron, commercial cobalt, and ferro-vanadium powders. The processing cycle was as follows: 1—Elemental powders were weighed and mechanically mixed for 24 hr. 2—Mixed powders were pressed at 60,000 psi into the form of bars 5/8 x 5/8 x 5 in. 3—Bars were sintered in an atmosphere of purified dry hydrogen for 24 hr at temperatures ranging from 1380" to 1340°C, depending upon the vanadium content. The as-sintered bars were cut in half; and one half was machined to 7/16 in. diam for thermal analysis. The remainder of the bar was hot forged to approximately 0.050 in. for X-ray diffraction analysis. Additional details of sample preparation are presented subsequently according to the type of test performed. Thermal Analysis Measurements One of the simplest and most widely used tools for determining phase relations as they change with temperature and composition is to study the rate of change of temperature of a material as heat is supplied or extracted at a constant rate. The thermal analysis method used in this investigation is the inverse-rate method described by Smith.'

ALTHOUGH confident of its ability to meet any demands which may be made, the petroleum refining industry is not complacent about the situation and realizes that the quantities of petroleum products to be furnished are so enormous and so far beyond what was previously estimated that the full co-operative effort of the industry must be exerted. Establishment by the President in May of the Office of Petroleum Coordinator for Defense with Secretary of the Interior Ickes at its head, plus the formation of the Petroleum Industry Council for Defense, in November, provide the channels for united endeavor within the industry and the means for gearing that endeavor within the industry and the means for gearing that endeavor in full harmony with the nation?s needs. Great strides have been made and a rapid understanding of the situation and the magnitude of the task is being attained by all concerned.

The plight of the Japanese mining business is pitiful. Coal mines were given the highest priority for all materials they needed, yet between the end of the war and June 1948, the government was obliged to subsidize them to the extent of 22 billion yen, this being the difference between the consumer's price and the producer's price. Most of the metal mining companies have been operating at only one fifth to one third of war-time production rates, and financial losses have been terrific. The chief difficulties have been a plethora of office workers and a dearth of equipment, supplies, and miners. The principal material needs at metal mines are steel rails. cars, plates, nails, rubber hoses, and belting, to say nothing of modern core drills which are totally lacking. Until recently the great shortage was in coal; for lack of fuel the smelters and factories failed to produce the very metals and equipment now needed to operate the mines. Nation-wide shortages have created a monstrous inflation of prices throughout all the economy, currently amounting to 200 times the prewar figures. For example, the price of copper ranged from 500 to 900 yen per metric ton for many years until 1937, but in mid-1948 producers were

Geostatistics originated as an application of a classical statistical concept, multivariate linear regression, to the solution of a practical problem, estimation of reserves in the South African gold mines. In this respect, geostatistics should only be considered as one statistical method among many that can be used to evaluate mineral deposits. R.F. Shurtz has studied possible applications of power spectrum analysis to the same problem, and these studies may result in future improvements over the presently accepted geostatistical methodology. The intention of R.F. Shurtz's paper, as stated by the author, is to "relate geostatistical doctrine to classical statistical and mathematical concepts." However, in this comparison the "geostatistical doctrine" appears to include only the simplest among the geostatistical concepts advocated by G. Matheron, while "classical statistical and mathematical concepts" are limited nearly exclusively to power spectrum analysis. The author attempts to compare the two methods, and to prove the theoretical superiority of power spectrum analysis. Unfortunately, a number of errors and incorrect statements are made concerning both the theory and application of geostatistics, which invalidate the comparison and the conclusions drawn from it. The errors made in this comparison are understandable since few scientists can claim to have expertise in two theories as diverse as those compared here. In many respects, this paper is reminiscent of polemics which occurred 15 to 20 years ago when geostatistics and trend surface analysis were compared. Each method has its own merit and limitations, and none can claim absolute superiority. The most misleading statements found in R.F. Shurtz's paper are: The definition of the semivariogram given on page 1923 is incorrect. If the maximum difference between two assays is 1, the maximum value of the semivariogram is not 1, as stated, but 0.5. The comparison of geostatistics and linear regression made in the section entitled "Insufficiency of Classical Statistics?" is not valid. The semivariogram of the sample values given in Table 1 (page 1919) has a parabolic shape indicative of a linear drift. When such a semivariogram is observed, the simplest method of geostatistical estimation (linear kriging with unknown mean) is not applicable. Universal kriging must be used that takes trends into account. On page 1921 it is stated that the use of trends "is officially disparaged in geostatistics." Again on page 1924 mention is made to "Matheron's commitment to random process (intrinsic) models and his present categorical rejection of deterministic (trend) models for mineral deposit evaluation." Indeed, from articles published by geostatisticians in the 1960s one could infer that geostatistical methods are not compatible with the presence of trends. However, even the simplest

THE decision of the Supreme Court of the United States not to review the findings of the lower courts closes an interesting chapter in the mining litigation that has arisen as a result of the extralateral feature of the mining law. The time seems opportune to record some of the important geological features, and also some of the legal features, of the controversy, in the hope that these will be permanently accessible to members of the mining profession. After many rumors of litigation, the Utah Consolidated Mining Co. sued its neighbor for the ore that had been, it was alleged, wrongfully extracted from its so-called Yampa limestone lode. This ore lay beneath Utah-Apex surface and was claimed by virtue of the extralateral rights conferred on the Utah Consolidated Co. through the ownership of certain specific mining claims, one of the principal claims being the Yampa. Previous to bringing suit, the Utah Consolidated Co. had strengthened its position by purchasing the Old Yampa mine and by making an agreement with the Utah Metal & Tunnel Co., which gave it clearer title to the outcrop of the Highland Boy limestone. Access to the workings of the Utah-Apex Co. was secured and reciprocal privileges gave Utah-Apex representatives the right to enter the properties of the Utah Consolidated Co. This resulted in the Utah-Apex immediately bringing countersuit for ore alleged to have been wrongfully extracted from under its surface in the Leadville country, see Fig. 4. Six cases came up for consideration: five related to the original suit and the countersuit, and one related to the Dana extralateral claims of the Utah-Apex Co.

A WIDE variety of lead ore is treated by the Midvale Smelter, for it is a custom plant not only treating Company lead concentrate and direct-smelting ores but also custom ores and concentrates, principally from Utah, Idaho, and Nevada, with lesser amounts from Arizona, California, Colorado, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. The principal operating departments of the plant are weighing and sampling, Wedge roaster, D&L sintering, blast furnace and drossing, and baghouse. The lead bullion produced is shipped to a subsidiary, the U.S.S. Lead Refinery, Inc., at East Chicago, while the by-products, such as matte and speiss, are shipped to other smelters or re-treated at the plant.

The Lucky Friday mine east of Mullan, Idaho, is an outstanding example of a property in the Coeur d’Alene district where a small and insignificant- appearing silver-lead-zinc vein at the surface has changed at depth into a large vein of great importance. The Lucky Friday vein has little if any surface expression and above the 1200 level the ore shoots are small and discontinuous. Between the 1200 level and 2450 level, the lowest developed level, the main ore shoot has shown remarkable improvement on each succeeding lower level, and today the mine is one of the major lead-silver producers in the Coeur d'Alene district. History: The Lucky Friday property is on the north side of the South Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River in sections 25, 26 and 35, T. 48 N., R. 5 E., Hunter mining district, Shoshone County, Idaho. This is about one mile east of the town of Mullan, which serves the eastern portion of the Coeur d'Alene district. The southern part of the property is crossed by a branch line of the Northern Pacific Ry. and by U. S. Highway 10. This highway is the principal road crossing the panhandle of Idaho and connects the district with Spokane, Wash., on the west and Missoula, Mont., on the east. The main portal and surface plant of the Lucky Friday mine is at an elevation of 3365 ft, only a short distance above the valley floor and a few hundred feet from U. S. Highway 10, so the mine is readily accessible for year-round operation.

In October 1939, a drilling program was commenced on the Atlantic seaboard of Brazil, with three steam rotary rigs of medium capacity. One of these was assigned to the State of Alagbas and the other two to the State of Bahia. During the remaining few months of 1939 and during the year 1940, some eight wells were drilled, two in Alagbas and six in Bahia. Two small producers were found in the latter state. In early 1941 three medium-weight Diesel rigs were added to the equipment, thus permitting the drilling of some 15 wells during the year 1941. The two small producers found in 1940 in the State of Rahia were near the city of Silo Salvador. In 1941 three additional small wells were brought in, in the same area, and a further producer on an isolated structure some 75 km. to the northwest of this production. No commercial production has been found in the State of Alagbas. Approximately 26 wells have been drilled or are drilling, six of which are producers— five in one area and one in another. The program for 1942 calls for the development of the two areas in which wells have been found and also the drilling of several wildcat structures located either by geophysics or surface geology. All production in the area of the several producing wells is somewhat less than 2000 ft. and in the other area about 3800 ft. The area of the several wells is known as the Lobato field, and is practically within the city limits of Sao Salvador. The area 75 km. northwest of the city will be known as the Candeias field.

Drag coefficients for a cylinder being towed through water at constant velocity and also at constant linear acceleration were measured. Drag coefficients for constant velocity towing showed reasonable agreement with previous results. The drag coefficients found for constant acceleration showed little correlation with either the magnitude of the acceleration or the value of the modulus AD/V2 and tended to be slightly lower than those for constant velocity. INTRODUCTION For the design of offshore structures, wave forces acting on immersed cylinders are of importance. Several investigations have been made of these forces and of how they can be predicted from wave theories. A paper by Crooke' summarizes much of the work already done. More recent research by the Wave Research Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, has added much to the body of data collected under ocean wave conditions, but has not found a reliable method of force prediction from basic theories of wave motion. The present investigation is part of a long-range program to collect data with which to test current and future theories and correlations. The immediate objective was to measure drag forces on a circular cylinder subjected to linear accelerations over the range of Reynolds numbers between l04 and 105 where the drag coefficient was a constant for constant velocities. In particular, the effect of constant acceleration from rest and from uniform motion was to be investigated. The effect of acceleration may be evaluated in terms of drag coefficients. A useful resistance coefficient, C, is defined by the equation for total drag force, D, exerted by the fluid on the cylinder. DT =CSp V2/2.........(1) The coefficient C may be plotted as a function of the parameter AD/V2. Here D is the diameter and S is the projected area of the cylinder. The acceleration and velocity are A and V. The mass density of the fluid is p. An alternate drag coefficient, C, corresponds to the total force of the fluid opposing the motion minus the virtual mass force. This drag coefficient, arising from the velocity of the fluid, may be compared with that for the same cylinder in uniform motion. The similarities and differences between this coefficient as calculated for accelerated and for steady motion are of interest in the inverse process of predicting drag forces on cylinders under arbitrary conditions. One serious difficulty in this method is the specification of the virtual mass which depends also on the flow picture about the cylinder.1 EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT The experiment was performed in the combination wave and towing tank at the Engineering Field Station of the University of California. The tank is 200 ft long, 8 ft wide, and 6 ft deep. The tow carriage is externally propelled by a cable, and the velocity of the carriage is maintained essentially constant by means of an am-plidyne. For the purpose of the present investigation, the speed control of the amplidyne was modified by inserting a linear speed control rheostat, which was rotated at a constant speed by a small d-c motor equipped with a slip-clutch. Accelerations which were constant over a reasonable length of time were thus produced. The magnitude of the acceleration depended upon the speed of the d-c motor and the limiting speed of the carriage. Data were obtained for a range of accelerations of 2 to 10 ft/sec,2 and a range of velocities of 2 to 15 ft/sec. An accelerometer (Statham Type C-2-350) with a range of ±2g was attached to the carriage and connected to a Brush analyzer and penmotor. A continuous coil of wire with 10 turns/ft wound around a fixed wooden form extending for a distance of 40 ft along the length of the tank was connected by an electrical contact mounted on the carriage to a Brush analyzer and penmotor, to give the time-position history for each run. The Péchelbronn oil field is located in the province of Alsace, in the Rhine Valley, about 30 miles north of Strasbourg. It is approximately 4 miles wide and 12 miles long, extending from the villages of Lobsann on the north to Wintershausen and Ohlungen near Haguenau on the south. (See Fig. 1.) The productive area includes about 44,000 hectares (107,680 acres). The name Péchelbronn signifies "pitch-spring" or "pitch-fountain." The first exploratory galleries were driven in from the hillside in 1735; and in 1745 the first official concession was granted by the French government and the first pit sunk to a depth of about 30 ft. Extraction by drilled wells was begun in 1879, supplementing the mining operations, and during the next 10 years 200 wells were drilled to an average depth of 172 m. (568 ft.). The bringing in of two "gusher" wells, in 1882 and 1888, respectively, was followed by the abandonment of all underground work. Underground mining, with a view to increasing the production of petroleum by recovering the oil left in the sands after drilling wells, was resumed in 1916. This mining operation started by sinking shaft No. 1 to a depth of 150 m. (495 ft.). The underground developments were pushed during 1917 and 1918 and the annual production of the Péchel-bronn field was increased to about 50,000 metric tons or 350,000 bbl. On the signing of the Versailles Treaty the province of Alsace, which had been taken by Germany as the result of the war of 1870, was returned to France, and the proprietary rights were taken over by the French Government. Concessions or leases, which embraced all the known oil-bearing territory of the field, were granted to the present operating company, Mines de Péchelbronn. This company followed both the drilling and the mining methods of the previous company.

In my paper on "The Consumption of Fuel in the Taylor Gas-Producer Plants at the Aspen and Marsac Mills" (Trans., xxiii., 134), I mentioned that in the plant which I had designed for the Ontario mill, the gas-tubes were to be covered with thin, corrugated sheet-iron, over which a coating of asbestos-magnesia would be spread in order to effect a good insulation and keep the gas as hot as possible. At the Ontario mill, two Stetefeldt furnaces and two revolving driers are fired with gas. One furnace is connected with a Taylor producer of 5 feet diameter, and the other furnace and the two driers are heated by the gas from a Taylor producer of 7 feet diameter. In the latter case the gas-tubes are necessarily somewhat long, and the cleaning of them takes time. In order to prevent overheating of the tubes during that operation, it has been found advantageous not to provide them with an insulating covering. If a tube becomes red-hot at any place by the burning of soot, this is at once observed, and the tube is closed until it cools down. The tubes con-

RECOVERY and profits in the mining business do not go hand in hand. Some part of an orebody can usually be recovered at a lower cost per ton than the whole orebody or a higher proportion of it. Similarly, the total of the profits that may be made from mining an orebody is in itself not a true measure of the value of the business. The yardstick for money value should be present worth, and this is particularly so for purposes of com-parison. A simple example, well within the bounds of practicability, illustrates these points: Assume a mine to have known ore reserves of 4,000,000 tons. The ore is of uniform grade but is so situated that 1,000,000 tons could be mined more cheaply than the remainder. Present operations are on the basis of complete recovery of the ores. Output is 100,000 tons per year at a profit of $1 per ton. It is estimated that the 1,000,000 tons of readily accessible ore could be mined at the same production rate but at a profit of $2 per ton. For an output of 100,000 tons each year at a profit of $1.00 per ton, the mine will have a life of 40 years; will produce $4,000,000 of total profit, and, at Hoskold rates of 8 and 4 per cent, will have a present value of $1,104,690. If only the easy one-quarter of the ore is considered, with an output of 100,000 tons each year, at a profit of $2.00 per ton, that part of the mine will have a life of 10 years, will produce total profits of $2,000,000, and at rates of 8 and 4 per cent will have a present value of $1,224,800. . Under conditions such as these, then, one-quarter of the reserve ore promptly mined is worth some 10 per cent more than the entire reserve would be on an average basis extending over the longer period. Assume further that one-half, or 2,000,000 tons, of the reserves could be promptly mined at the same yearly rate of 100,000 tons at a profit of $1.50 per ton. Then this part of the mine would have a life of 20 years, would produce total profits of $3,000,000, and would have a present value of $1,320,630; approximately 20 per cent greater than for the whole ore-body on an average basis for the longer period.

MINING conditions in Mexico during the current year have been most unfavorable, synchronizing with conditions in the United States, but the outlook for the near future is improving. The chief difficulties met with are because of the following conditions: severe drop in prices of metals; high smelting rates; high prices of supplies; inadequate means of transportation; low efficiency of labor. In comparison with pre-war prices for metals it cannot be said that prices are low, particularly for silver, which recently has gone to a level that would have been considered exceedingly good in 1912. But conditions have changed so greatly that only the most favorably situated properties can operate without loss.

CALAMINE is one of the semiminerals that have great similarity to the metals. It is a very heavy mineral earth of a yellowish color. It is found in Germany near the lead mines and in Italy in a mountain between Milan and Como. It is also found, as I have heard, in other places, as at Fosini in the territory of Siena. I believe that it is almost certain that some exists there because there are many other kinds of minerals there- about, although none is mined there in these times. But this does not mean that it could not be mined or that there is not some there that is real. Someone says that he med to melt what he could find with copper [36v]
