The purpose of this paper is to present the results of the application of the earth-resistivity method of subsurface investigation to the problem of locating seams of anthracite coal beneath a mantle of soil and subsoil. Details are given of the successful use of this method in locating the outcrops of anthracite seams in actual prospecting. The presence of the outcrop of an anthracite seam is indicated at points where electrical resistivity tests showed relatively low readings. The reason for this is that in some localities the resistivity of anthracite was found to be about 0.0001 megohm-cm. compared to 1 to 200 megohm-cm. for shales and sandstones. For two reasons it is believed that the data summarized in this paper should be of particular interest. In the first place, most of the interpretations of the resistivity survey have been checked by subsequent drilling and some by the removal of the overburden and the exposing of the anthracite seams. It is infrequent that the opportunity for checking results so thoroughly is given. In the second place, the fact that recent commentatorsl,2,3 on the application of geophysical methods to mining have concluded that direct prospecting for anthracite and other types of coal is not promising makes the good results obtained more significant. So far as the authors can learn, the only previous experiment with electrical methods in the Pennsylvania anthracite field was one made by Sherwin F. Kelly in 1921, when he used the self-potential method at Wilkes-Barre4. The profile he made does not show a very marked correlation with the geologic cross section. Kelly points out that stray currents from electric motors in the mines undoubtedly affected 'his results, but the experience of the present authors with stray currents from mining machinery suggests the possibility that the potentials measured by Kelly were due almost entirely to this effect.

In the summer of 1909 the Boston & Montana reduction department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. completed a new flue system, at a cost of about $1,100,000, and as this includes the largest and highest chimney in the world, and some new features of flue construction, a description will be of interest. At the Spokane meeting of the Institute in September, 1909, a brief mention was made of this flue system, in discussing Mr. Brunton's presidential paper on the Progress of Metallurgy in the West, and a promise was given that when a long enough time had elapsed, so that operating results could be given, a paper would be offered. The smelting plant includes blast furnaces, MacDougall roasters, gas-fired reverberatories, and converters.

EFFORTS at smoke abatement date back to the year 1273 in England when a law was passed prohibiting the use of "sea cole." The law was not enforced, so King Edward I, 33 years later, appointed a commission "to enquire of all such who burnt sea cole in the city or parts adjoining, and to punish them for first offense with great fines and ransomes, and for the second offense to demolish their furnaces." Many other commissions have since been named to investigate the smoke problem in England, but it still persists in many British cities. In the United States the movement to abate the smoke nuisance started in certain Middle Western cities, and has made considerable progress. Until recently, the coal-producing industry co-operated little in smoke¬abatement programs, taking the attitude that smoke elimination is the dealer's or user's responsibility; and the dealers, in turn placed the responsibility entirely on the user.

Some years ago it was my good fortune to inspect some coal properties in Germany, and the most striking impression I received on my trip was that in that country every one in the coal industry, miners and operators, was proud of the fact-not apologetic about it-and that industrially coal was looked upon as a King. The explanation, of course, was that at least 90 per cent of the entire mineral value produced in Germany was from coal, and that it was the very foundation of the nation's industrial life. The feeling was so different from that existing in the United States among those engaged in producing coal that it made a profound impression on me, and many times since then I have speculated about the reasons for the difference in opinion in the two countries. Here, of course, our units are much smaller and more numerous, there is not so large a proportion of technically trained men, and we have the American trait of depreciating the things we do at home; but among those not actively

Over the past 25 years hard-rock mining companies have developed a number of profitable computer applications which appear applicable to operations in the coal industry. The evolution of these applications are described and the most profitable discussed. The basic nature of these systems is that they must cut across organizational boundaries. While technological advances contributed significantly to the successful implementation of computers within mining, the human aspects related to organization, management and control of systems projects remain as key to future success in coal as they were and still are in hard-rock mining.

NOT much activity has been evident during the past year in the establishment of co-operative scholarships but the interest among the coal-mining companies is more pronounced than ever. This is apparent from the replies received to a letter sent out by the Committee on the Promotion of Student Interest in Coal Mining to over 120 coalmine operating officials. With that letter was forwarded a bulletin issued by the school of mineral industries of The Pennsylvania State College entitled ?Industrial Scholarships ? a Partnership of Industry and Education.? In that circular was outlined the need for trained men in the war and postwar world, and particularly as such demands pertain to the growth of the mineral industries.

Several different equation forms were studied to determine the extent to which each particular equation type yielded an accurate representation of a given set of first-stage creep data. Specially developed least-squares computer programs were employed to obtain unique solutions for the creep-equation constants. In studies of creep data for lead at 14.5"C, nickel at 70OCC, and arc-cast tungsten at 2400°C consistently good representations were afforded by a third-degvee polynomial in t113. Other effective correlations were obtained with the Andrade, Cottrell-Aytekin, and de Lacombe equations along with a third-degree polynomial in t112. A newly proposed creep equation involving a hyperbolic-sine term in t1'3 was also found to yield very satisfactory results. This appears to be the first use of such a functional relationship in the analysis of transient creep behavior. In general, the deformation behavior of a material subjected to a tensile load is described in a strain-time plot. Experiments have shown that, following the instantaneous elongation which results on loading, the instantaneous slope (i.e., creep rate) of the strain-time curve decreases gradually with time and approaches what appears to be a constant value. Equations, therefore, which are proposed to provide an analytical representation of such first-stage or transient creep behavior must be consistent with these observations. In other words, at time zero, these equations must yield a finite deformation value corresponding to the elongation on loading. Furthermore, the first derivative of these equations must exhibit a fairly high although finite value at time zero, and then values which decrease with time. It is also preferable, in general, that the derivative eventually assume a constant value at high time values. Although many studies of first-stage creep behavior have been made and numerous equation forms have been proposed for expressing this type of deformation behavior, it is still not possible to state with any assurance which functional relationship will be adequate for a given set of measurements. Parabolic relationships have been employed most extensively although logarithmic expressions have been shown to be applicable in some instances. Combined forms1 have been studied in considerable detail and have on occasion been found to be very effective. One such expression is that of iXndradea and involves a modified parabolic expression: where 1 is the instantaneous length, lo is the length immediately following load application, t is the time, and p and k are constants. Another combined form has been proposed by weaver3 as follows: where E is the instantaneous strain, is is the linear creep rate, t is the time, and a and b are constants.

For many years the problem of increasing ultimate recovery of oil from a reservoir has been a subject of interest to the oil industry. At present, a standard secondary recovery technique is to flood the reservoir with water once natural forces of the system are depleted. The permeability characteristics of the rock, together with interfacial forces which exist between the two fluids and the porous material. allow only part of the oil in the rock formation to be recovered by the water-flooding process. Laboratory experiments have shown that when detergents are added to the flooding water, the flow properties of oil in a porous rock arc improved. This improvement results in greater oil recovery. Even though higher recoveries are obtained using detergents, the extra cost associated with the method may make it economically unsatisfactory. To establish economic feasibility requires experimental laboratory measurement of fluid and rock properties together with a calculational procedure to predict field results. Pilot tests in the field may also be required. This paper presents a mathematical procedure for predicting detergent flood behavior. A number of reasonable simplifying assumptions are made to obtain a tractable system of equations. The resulting method may be regarded as a generalization of Buckley-Lev-crett' theory to solve simultaneously for water saturation and detergent concentration profiles. Consequently this type of calculation can be used in much the same manner as Buckley-Leverett theory is used to evaluate a water flood. The mathematical method employed is the so-called method of characteristics for solving hyperbolic partial differential equations. This application of the method is instructive because several other problems in reservoir analysis may be analyzed in a similar manner. FLUID FLOW EQUATIONS The flow behavior of oil and water without detergent through porous reservoir rock is usually expressed by Darcy's law and a continuity equation for each phase. Fluid viscosity is denoted by 11, p is the density, 4 is porosity, and I the time. The subscripts w and o refer to water and oil. The capillary forces in the system lead to a difference in pressure between phases. This may be expressed by the relation: Pm -P0 =Pc(S).........(5) The capillary pressure? P,, is determined experimentally as a function of saturation. DETERGENT BALANCE EQUATION Addition of detergent to the water phase affects the flow properties of the system. Capillary pressure and relative permeability become functions of detergent concentration, c, as well as fluid saturation. That is: P--P (S,c) and k,,,.- - -- k,,,. At low oil saturation values, the presence of detergent reduces capillary pressure and reduces the relative permeability ratio. Detergents are surface-active and adsorb on rock surfaces. The quantity adsorbed, a, will depend on the concentration c of detergent solution and may also depend on the saturation; thus, a = a(S,c). In this analysis we have assumed that the detergents used are water soluble but not oil soluble, and their movement is therefore restricted to the water phase. The dispersion of detergent in water is neglected by comparison with transfer by flow within the system. Following minor slope failures at the commencement of mining the west wall of the Kanmantoo Mine was redesigned from an overall slope between haul roads of 55° to 46°. This decision was based on a probabilistic analysis which indicated that 46° was the optimum economic slope.

As bizarre an example of competitive salesmanship to be imagined took place last June in Western Australia. A half dozen world renowned mining groups received a Japanese iron and steel investigatory mission. Geologists, engineers and businessmen, all specialists in iron ore, representing elements of the Japanese government and steelmakers, politely grilled each iron ore group for technical information and plans for property development. At stake were sales contracts with Japan for many millions of tons of iron ore. Since approximately two dozen visitors were involved, it was necessary to divide them into four groups for dispensing information, transportation and accommodations at the remote exploration camps. In a continent noted for its wide open spaces, the hinterland of Western Australia is spectacularly lacking in settlements. The state has better than one third of Australian land and statistically 0.8 persons per sq mile. In reality, however, over 400,000 of the 800,000 population reside in Perth. Under such circumstances, properly receiving and feting these important visitors would seem to be difficult but the competing exploration groups vied ingeniously to outdo each other in hospitality.

This paper was prepared at the request of Capt. A. F. Lucas, Chair man of the Institute's Committee on Petroleum and Gas; as a pre1iminary.discussion of the fuel oils which are used in the Southwest, giving their composition, uses, prices, etc. Should it afterward be found desirable, these observations may be extended over a larger area. In this connection, I suggest that samples of all kinds of fuel oils, including various tars, from all over the country, be collected and sent to some testing laboratory for examination. We would be glad to extend the facilities of the laboratory of the Bureau of Economic Geology and Technology, at the University of Texas, for this purpose, and to do the work free of all expenses. After such examinations are made and the results classified and studied, it would be possible to suggest specifications under which fuel oils should be purchased, and to arrive at some conclusions respecting the uniformity of such specifications, with due allowance for climatic and other more or less local conditions. While such specifications do not now depart from a common standard anything like as much as specifications for illuminating oils do, yet there are discrepancies which should not exist. Some of these discrepancies are of lessening importance, due to the pronounced tendency to distill every crude oil that can be distilled with profit, and to send residues into the market for fuel oil. Residues from the refineries are of a more uniform chemical composition and physical nature than many of the crude oils that go direct into the fuel market. The lower flash-point oils are disappearing from the fuel trade and in place of them we are getting oils that do not flash below 220" F., nor burn under 320" F. In the Southwest, it has not been long since we had fuel oils that flashed as low as 110" F., and the average flash point over a considerable period was 151" F. Now we are using oil that flashes at about 30" lower than the former burning point, which was 258" F. In other words, the flash point has risen, on the average, 100"; and the burning point about 75".

IT, HAS been my privilege to be Chairman of Engineering Council for very nearly three years, during which time Mr. A. D. Flinn, the. Secretary, and myself, have seen the organization develop until it is functioning smoothly and accomplishing what it can with the money at its disposal. The earliest attempt at what may be called an Engi¬neering Council, of which. I have any knowledge, was made six or seven years ago when the four Founder Societies each appointed two men, who occasionally met to discuss matters submitted to them which were of importance to, the, profession as a whole. I was one of the representatives of the American Institute of Mining Engineers.

A THOROUGHLY satisfactory crowd turned out at the fall meeting of the Industrial Minerals Division and took an active part in the entire program. On Thursday afternoon, Sept. 24, a limestone plant was inspected, technical sessions occupying the attention of the visitors all day Friday and Saturday morning. Headquarters were at the Nittany Lion Inn, an attractive hostel on the Penn State campus, at State College, right in the center of Pennsylvania. We are still in the dark, despite inquiries, as to just what breed of lions Nittany lions are. As nearly as we could find out, Nittany is not a Biblical name, as it sounded to us, but a corruption of the name of an Indian princess, or maiden, or maybe just girl that haunted those parts in bygone times and after whom a near-by mountain was named. Penn State athletes are "lions" and there you are. The meeting was supposed to be a joint one with the American Ceramic Society's Materials and Equipment Division; but it was quite evident that the Institute had a much better publicity agent than the Society, which bothered Ross. Purdy, the aggressive secretary of the ceramic people, no end. However, Secretary Purdy saw to it that everyone present fully understood that the Ceramic Society was present, so that that contingent all but stole the show, its representatives presiding at every meeting. The Pittsburgh Section of the American Ceramic Society was also supposed to be holding its fall meeting there at the same time, but made no trouble at all for anybody, as one of the speakers remarked.

IN JUNE 1921, the Sullivan &lining Co., owned jointly by the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co. and the Hecla Mining Co, started work on the development of the Star Mine. The development work contemplated called for a crosscut from the Hecla workings on the 2000 level to the Star ledge. The length of crosscut necessary to encounter the Star ledge was approximately 8900 ft. from the Hecla shaft. By using workings formerly made by the Hecla Mining Co., only about 8100 ft. of actual crosscutting was necessary. This crosscut has a direction of S 20° W and would have a tendency to crosscut any ledges in the intervening ground.

The Oklahoma legislature recently passed a bill providing for "the creation of an oil and gas department under the jurisdiction of the Corporation Commission, authorizing the Corporation Commission to appoint a chief oil and gas conservation agent, and conferring exclusive jurisdiction on the Corporation Commission in reference to the conservation of oil and gas, and the inspection of gasoline and oil, the product of crude petroleum, and repealing all acts or parts of acts in conflict therewith and declaring an emergency." Some of the functions of the new bureau include the receiving and filing of all well logs, and the direction and supervision of plugging all abandoned oil and gas wells, under rules prescribed by the Corporation Commission. The two leading petroleum-producing States of the country, Oklahoma and California, have now established oil and gas bureaus with a staff of inspectors to see that the important rules relating to the conservation of oil and gas are thoroughly enforced. The economic significance and the value of well logs in the conservation work has been recognized, and the necessary legal action taken to insure and procure them. William B. Heroy, of the Government Land Classification Board, in a personal communication to the writer, says that the drilling of wells is also regulated by public authority in the Roswell artesian basin in southeastern New Mexico, where a permit must be obtained for the drilling of any well and a certified log of the well recorded with a county official. The method is said to give fairly satisfactory results. In a recent article1 a National instead of a State Bureau was suggested for collecting and filing well logs. In discussing the paper, L. L. Hutchison characterized such a plan as impractical because the average driller or contractor will often juggle or guess at the log and will not keep the record sufficiently close or accurate, making it necessary to maintain a special man at each well for the sole purpose of obtaining

The following letter was received from Prof. Kemp in reply to a telegram expressing the greetings of the members attending the Annual Meeting in New York. "Melbourne Beach, Fla. Feb. 17, 1916. Dear Mr. Stoughton: The welcome telgram from the members of the Institute, which you kindly trans-mitted to me, came safely yesterday and I catch the next available mail with a heart-felt acknowledgment. I cannot express to you how greatly the remembrance cheers and braces me during the days of patient waiting for the feeling of over-strain to fully pass, and for the time when I can again be back among the friends in the Institute who are very clear to me. While I cannot reach all the members who joined in the telegram I will ask you to say to such as are available that I am profoundly sensible of the thoughtfulness which prompted the message. I write from a little bungalow on the ocean. side of the half mile or more of sand dunes, thickly grown with palmetto, which separate the ocean from the Indian River. Two miles or more of Indian River still intervene between the little colony of Melbourne Beach and Melbourne on the mainland and on the Florida East Coast R. R. where the telegraph station is. Photoelectronic radiation detectors may be conveniently classified as homogeneous intrinsic, homogeneom extrinsic, or junction type. Highly photosensitive homogeneous intrinsic photodetectors may be prepared from a number of different II-VI, III-V, or IV materials. Such materials require the presence of specific imperfections that can act as sensitizing centers to provide long majority carrier lifetime. Homogeneous extrinsic photodetectors are of interest primarity for infrared detection, and consist principully of germaniuim and silicon with suitable inpurities. A vaviety of junction photodetectors exist, with silicon us the most common material for them all. The following extrema in performance are found: 1) highest photoconductivity gain in homogeneous intrinsic photodetectors; 2) smallest response time (highest frequency response) in p-i-n junctions; 3) largest gain-bandwidth product in avalanche diodes. ALTHOUGH the total number of materials exhibiting photoconductivity effects is very large, only a relatively few of these have appropriate properties for a practical photoelectronic radiation detector. In fact if one surveys the commercial detectors currently available, one finds that the field is dominated by some ten or fewer materials. These are summarized in Table 1 in terms of the other important variable in detector fabrication, the structure of the material, i.e., whether the material is used as a single crystal or in polycrystalline form, and whether the material is used as a homogeneous detector or whether the detector depends upon the existence of a junction or barrier in the material. The principal wavelength range for each type of material is also shown, together with an indication of the utilization of intrinsic or extrinsic excitation. For the purposes of the present comparison of various detectors, it will be convenient to discuss two main topics: homogeneous photodetectors and junction photodetectors. The performance of a photoelectronic radiation detector is measured in terms of two parameters: the photoconductivity gain, and the response time of the detector. A convenient figure-of-merit is given by the ratio of gain to response time, often called the gain-bandwidth product. The photoconductivity gain is a device parameter since it varies in many cases with the applied voltage and the detector geometry, and should be distinguished from the actual photosensitivity of the material involved. This photosensitivity can be conveniently given as the product of free carrier lifetime and mobility in the material. The photoconductivity gain is defined as the number of charge carriers which pass between the electrodes per second for each photon absorbed per second, where G is the photoconductivity gain, is the pho-tocurrent in amperes, e is the electronic charge in coulombs, and F is the total number of electron-hole pairs created in the photo conductor per second by the absorption of light. The gain may also be expressed as the ratio of the lifetime of a free carrier to the transit time for that carrier, i.e., the time required for the carrier to move between the electrodes. For a material in which one-carrier conductivity dominates, where T is the lifetime of a free carrier, ttr is the transit time for this carrier, p is the carrier mobil-ity, V is the applied voltage, and L is the electrode spacing. From Eq. [2] it follows that the photoconductivity gain is proportional to the photosensitivity of the material (tP), the proportionality constant being The photosensitivity of a material, and hence the photoconductivity gain of a device utilizing the material, depends on the lifetime of the free carriers as a critical parameter. In a homogeneous material this lifetime is determined by the nature of imperfections in the material, and in an inhomogeneous material the lifetime is determined by the specific junction structure. The speed of response, the other basic photodetec-tor parameter, is determined by factors quite similar to those important for photoconductivity gain. Imperfections are of primary importance in homogeneous materials, and the structure of the junction is a determining factor in junction devices. For infrared detectors it has become common to define another quantity designed to indicate directly how effective the detector is in distinguishing between a small photoconductivity signal and random noise due to the detector and its environment.
