The development of Western Mining Corporation's first commercial gold heap leaching operation is described. The laboratory testwork requirements for determining the amenability of ore to heap leaching techniques is discussed. Heap construction and operating practices are described; and production statistics and operating parameters are presented. It is shown that for a specific low grade gold ore a treatment cost optimization can be performed. Taking cognizance of the ore grade, percentage gold recovery, operating costs, and the gold sale price, it can be determined whether Carbon-In-Pulp (C-I-P) or Heap Leaching should be employed as the extraction process. The examples presented in this paper refer specifically to Kambalda and should not be used in themselves as generalities.

Minutes after the Friday afternoon October 16, 2009 announcement that the 80 year old Lake Champlain Bridge was closed to traffic out of concern for public safety, emergency detour planning started at VTrans and NYSDoT. The closure severed a cross-lake link between Addison, VT and Crown Point, NY, which created a 76 mile detour and significant hardship for commuters, farmers working on both sides of Lake Champlain, and businesses relying on both traffic and employees commuting between Vermont and New York. Rehabilitating the bridge was determined to be economically and technically unfeasible and the design of a replacement bridge was accelerated for a spring 2010 construction start. In the meantime, a temporary ferry alternative was to be rushed into service beside the original bridge by February 2, 2010. This paper presents the case history of the fast-tracked ferry dock design and construction on the Vermont side. Twin 300-foot-long pile supported approach spans, a loading slip system and ice deflectors were designed, fabricated and constructed in 90 days in the fall/winter of 2009-2010. This chronicles the project from initial concepts through the extraordinary cooperation between state and federal agencies, and near round-the-clock winter construction on Lake Champlain. This project and its companion project on the New York shore succeeded by virtue of exceptional cooperation between seasoned regulatory, design, and construction participants and warrant this case-history presentation of the Vermont project to share within the industry as an example of overcoming extraordinary challenges.

A study of literature on the epidiorite dykes which transgress the Broken Hill lode and its wall rocks reveals a considerable diversity of thought regarding the time of emplacement of such dykes. In this paper it is deduced that the epidiorite dykes were formed at a late stage and were probably post-ore. Detailed mapping, sampling, and correlation of data from over 100 exposures substantiates this deduction. Physical disruption of the epidiorite dykes is indicated and some interaction of the epidiorite and ore at the time of intrusion is inferred.Further petrological study may confirm this.

Roof falls in coal mines typically occur in or around intersections and this has not changed in the last two decades. This research develops an improved scientific understanding of stress distribution and associated failure behavior around 4-way and 3-way coal mine intersections. Three-dimensional numerical analyses were performed to determine factors that influence intersection stability. The analyses used Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Failure zones around 3-way and 4-way intersections were developed. Intersection span and horizontal stress have a major influence on intersection stability. For the 4-way intersection, pillar corners across the intersection fail first and lead to progressive failure of immediate roof and floor layers. The mechanism of failure is similar for the 3-way entry but the shape and extension of failed zones differ. Coal ribs mostly fail due to tensile stress, while roof and floor strata fail due to shear stresses. Rib corners fail due to a combination of shear and tensile stresses. In addition to stress distribution; safety factor contours analysis was performed to assess stability of intersections.

When Haematite Explorations Pty. Ltd. began prospecting for petroleum in 1960, there was only ill-defined geological evidence on the land bordering Bass Strait to support the belief that petroleum lay trapped in sedimentary formations beneath its shallow waters.A reconnaissance of the area, made in 1961 by the airborne magnetometer method, covered the waters and islands of the Strait and overlapped the Victorian and Tasmanian coasts. The survey indicated the presence of the Bass Basin (which is completely water-covered), assisted in outlining the Otway and Gippsland Basins, and showed that each basin contains sedimentary rocks over 10,000 ft thick. Information on the regional geology and minor volcanic activity was also obtained.Marine seismic surveys carried out from 1962 to 1965 defined these basins more accurately and showed the nature and structure of the thick sedimentary sections.Correlation of the seismic data with onshore wells identified the sediments as Tertiary and Mesozoic. Subdivisions of the former in all basins and the latter in the Otway Basin were made. These Tertiary and Mesozoic rocks are not seriously deformed and they have good prospects of containing petroleum.Possible structural and stratigraphic traps, recognized from the seismic record sections by petroleum geologists, are being tested by offshore drilling which began in 1964.

Several recent tunnel jobs have required special adaptations of hard rock TBMs. Some of the special job conditions are ?no blast? launch requirements, small shafts or launch pits, proximity to existing underground structures, and short tunnels where the TBM must be retrieved through the primary lining. This paper describes a few of these projects, and the machine adaptations that have made TBM excavation feasible.

Mineral floatability is strongly connected with mineral structure and composition. The complexity of mineral surfaces has meant that few attempts have been made to understand the effect of impurities (trace elements) on the flotation process. Zeta potential technique has been extensively used to evaluate the surface charge of mineral particles. Nevertheless, those measurements consider only an average of mineral particles surface charge. The presence of fine particles and inclusions covering a mineral may influence the local reagent adsorption process, which will ultimately be reflected in the subsequent global response of the mineral froth flotation efficiency. The current work assesses the iron oxide mineral, haematite (Fe2O3). Zeta potential and streaming potential techniques were used to determine the surface charge of fine and coarser particles of haematite. Further analysis was performed to determine the point of zero charge (PZC) of the mineral. In addition, adsorption isotherms of alkyl ammonium chloride reagents with different lengths of carbon chains were carried out. It was found haematite floatability depends strongly on the isoelectric point (IEP) value, which is affected by other mineral species present at the mineral surface. Haematite floatability became significant only at relatively high tetradecyl ammonium chloride collector concentrations (concentration greater than 4 10-4M), which does not happen with other oxides such as quartz. Unlike quartz, haematite develops a low surface charge over a wide range of pH, disabling all long-range attractive interactions between the mineral and the collector. Therefore, hydrophobic chain interaction is probably the most likely mechanism acting to promote collector adsorption and enhance further floatability. Diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) was used to suggest a possible mechanism to understand the sequence of collector adsorption and the effect of trace species on it. "INTRODUCTIONInternational Minerals and Chemical Corporation (Canada) Limited operates two potash mine/refinery complexes near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. Annual production of approximately 4.2 million tons is sold in the United States and overseas in five grades according to size and quality.Ore grading 25% K2 0 equivalent is mined from a horizontal bed by continuous boring machines, crushed, and hoisted at 8 inches. The refinery operation consists of the eight basic steps shown in Figure 1. Particle sizes handled are similar to those experienced in other forms of mineral beneficiation: 8 inches to 100 mesh. The ore is crystalline and particles are angular. Fortunately the major mineral constituents, sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), demonstrate relatively low hardness at 2 to 2.5.Therefore, while simple abrasion must be acknowledged, it is not a major problem except, of course, in circuits carrying magnetite.Corrosion, as represented by the classic equations of Figure 2, occurs in all its various forms."

Specialized marine blasting techniques were required to deepen and widen the access channel and turning basin of the Sudeste Port Terminal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This terminal has been designed to handle the exports of iron ore and other bulk solid cargoes to international markets. The Sudeste Port Terminal is connected to the iron ore quadrangle in Minas Gerais State by a dedicated railway line, giving Brazil’s independent miners a seamless access to global markets. However, the Sudeste Port Project is located in a protected marine environment. Blasting in this area has required a comprehensive blast induced ground vibrations monitoring and analysis program to ensure the safety of the sensitive structures surrounding of the blast areas. Nevertheless, the risk of generating higher ground vibrations on nearby structures due to the combination of short distances, larger excavations layers and complex geology, increased the complexity of the blast due to the limitations imposed by the maximum instantaneous charge and a demanding project schedule. Site-specific test blast programs were planned and executed in order to obtain in-situ vibration data to establish the local attenuation law, and also to better understand the role of dominant frequencies before production blasting started. This paper summarizes the main findings and solutions applied during the marine blasting project in the Sudeste Port Project.

The primary purpose of these investigations is to determine dewatering requirements and likely impacts associated with mining operations. Standard aquifer testing techniques were carried out at multiple locations within the Ord Range near Pardoo, Western Australia. Aquifer properties of an oxidised haematite orebody were calculated from test pumping data conducted in five fully penetrating test bores. Hydraulic properties of the Ridley magnetite orebody were calculated based on short term constant rate pumping tests, and packer tests. Packer tests were conducted in undeveloped and uncased exploration holes and diamond core holes. The new data sheds light on the hydrogeological properties of this previously unexplored region of Western Australia.Aquifer testing procedures for each bore included a preliminary step test followed by a constant rate test. Recovery data were collected in each bore over a period of four to six hours. Prior to testing, background water levels and water samples were collected in a network of monitoring and exploration bores to establish baseline water levels, gradients and water quality. Water quality within the bedrock of the Ord Range varies from 2000 to 5500 mg/L TDS whereas water quality within the alluvial sequence of the De Grey River is highly variable (400 to 2500 mg/L TDS), but is predominantly brackish with some water of potable quality which is used to supply Port Hedland. Test pumping supports the conceptual hydrogeological model that consists of a pod like orebody (aquifer) surrounded by low permeability waste rock (BIF), with very weak hydraulic connection to the adjacent alluvial systems. Calculated hydraulic conductivity from test pumping data across Pardoo ranged from 0.01 to 59 m/d, depending on deposit tested.A groundwater model was used to simulate dewatering required in proposed pits and to estimate the impact of dewatering on the surrounding shallow alluvial aquifers. Test pumping and numerical groundwater flow modelling indicate the proposed below water table pits can be successfully dewatered utilising in pit dewatering production bores. Yields from individual dewatering bores will reduce with time due to the reduction in saturated aquifer thickness.Based on the numerical groundwater modelling and field investigations the likely impacts to the adjacent De Grey River alluvial aquifer system (within the Priority 1 De Grey River Water Reserve) resulting from mining and dewatering activities is considered minimal. Recalibration of the groundwater model will be undertaken once several months of dewatering data are available.The aim of this paper is to present a range of aquifer parameters derived through standard aquifer testing techniques for an area previously unexplored in terms of hydrogeological characteristics. It is the goal of the authors to provide this comparison data set for future work in similar geologic media.

The southwest wall of the Lornex Pit at the Highland Valley Copper mine has been experiencing slope displacements since 1978. Measures to manage the displacements on previous pushbacks have included stepping out, scheduling pushbacks to unload the crest of unstable areas, slope dewatering and mining with intensive slope monitoring. The final pushback on this wall is currently being mined and substantial modifications to the slope geometry could prove to be uneconomical. As a result, a campaign of surface water collection and diversion, horizontal drainhole drilling and deep well drilling is currently underway to maintain an acceptable degree of stability to the end of mine life. The various factors contributing to instability, including engineering geologic controls, rock mass strength, and surface and groundwater hydrology are presented. Movement trends, displacement magnitudes and stability analyses results are also discussed.

[This is the sixth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative Agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of tines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935.-36.3/ The present report cover brands of gasoline represented by 1,490 samples plus thus: from the Pacific Coat, which ;sere averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. In some areas reports were received from 8 to 10 companies on the same brands of gasoline, Whereas in other areas only one Company reported on a brand. Thus, it can be seen that soma of the data are more representative than others. The inclusion of data from several cities within some of the districts has improved the report by reducing the number of brands reported by only one company. Severe changes have been made in the districts. A new district, Memphis, Tenn., has been formed to include Arkansas any western Tennessee. The Rocky Mountain area, have been divided into three sections. Salt Lake City and Denver form the Middle Rocky Mountain district; Laramie, Wyo., Idaho, Montana, and. Spokane, Wash., are included in the North Rocky Mountain district, and Arizona, New Mexico , and El Paso, Tex., have been combined to represent the South Rock Mountain district. The Cleveland district has been expanded to include Ohio ant. Indiana. Eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, and northern Virginia are included in the Washington (D. C.) district. The Atlanta district includes Georgia, South Carolina; Mississippee, and northern Florida.]

In considering the preparation of any paper concerning bearing metals, one feels a certain amount of diffidence in venturing into a field which has been capably explored at great length and in great detail during recent years. Many excellent articles have appeared in technical literature, dealing with the general theory of bearings and of bearing metals, the properties of white metals of the tin-base and lead-base types, and of the recently developed lead-bronzes.The justification for this further excursion into the field lies in the fact that it treats a branch of the bearing metal family which has so far received very little attention, and that of a somewhat sketchy nature, in published papers.The author's object is to give some outline of the history, development, present status and possibilities of the cadmium-base bearing metal alloys, particularly those in which copper is the main alloying element.GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS.It is desirable that attention should first of all be given to the general theory, constitution, and necessary attributes of bearing metals, in order that some of the problems met with during the development work may be better appreciated.Despite some evidence to the contrary, it is fairly generally maintained that an alloy for bearing metal use should be of a heterogeneous nature. It should consist of particles of a hard constituent uniformly distributed through a softer matrix.The basic idea is that the hard constituent should actually bear the load and resist wear, while the matrix imparts the necessary ductility and allows the bearing to align itself on the shaft in service.

In metalliferous mining operations, subdrill is that portion of the blast hole that is drilled below the target grade elevation, and in most cases loaded with explosives. Its primary aim is to enable efficient excavation down to the target floor level. Subdrill is often described as being expensive and that excessive subdrill should be avoided, as it can result in damage to the subsequent floor, lead to difficult drilling conditions and higher vibration levels. As a result, many operations aim to apply the bare minimum amount of subdrill in order to excavate to the target floor. At a large open cut copper operation, challenging geological structure resulted in slabby and blocky fragmentation in the stemming region, resulting in poor crusher throughput due to bridging. To overcome the poor fragmentation in the top of the bench, longer than conventional subdrill was used to precondition the top third of the bench. The technique significantly improved the run of mine fragmentation and resulted in feed to the in-pit crushers that is more consistent, which produced less crusher downtime due to bridging. A new method of quantifying the energy in a blast has been created. Termed the linear powder factor, or energy factor, the calculation considers the energy contributed by the subdrill of the upper bench and its impact on the energy in the lower bench. The technique enables blast designs to be optimised to deliver finer fragmentation and more consistent blast outcomes. To support the layer of preconditioned rock at the top of the bench, an innovative new device was developed. The device is inserted into the drill collar immediately after drilling and remains in position throughout the subsequent steps of hole depth measurement, priming, loading and removed prior to stemming. The device not only supports the broken rock at the top of the bench, but also minimises the amount of drill cuttings that fall back into the hole. Furthermore, the device helps protect the hole from damage by external factors such as weather events, drill tracks, vehicle tyres and movement around the collar during measurement and loading of the blast hole.

At the end of the recent war, reports became available from Europe of the use of tungsten-carbide inserts in percussion rockdrill bits. These bits were used with small size rockdrills, so that the only advantage gained from the use of the harder, abrasion resistant, tungsten-carbide appears to have been the greater life of the bit. Larger machines, such as used in Australia in conventional practice, had to be discarded to protect the relatively brittle tungstencarbide inserts and the vulnerable bonding with the bit body.As it had been found in machine shop practice that some grades of tungsten-carbide had been produced with considerably improved toughness, it was decided by Gold Mines of Australia Ltd. that drilling practice with tungstencarbide bits warranted detailed examination under Australian conditions, and that drilling tests should be undertaken at Morning Star (G.M.A.) Mines N.L., for which it acts as General Manager and Consultant.These investigations progressed through three stages:1. Preliminary Investigations and Tests.When the investigations were initiated no commercial bits were available in Australia, and manufacture was commenced with improvised equipment from virtual scratch. "SynopsisAccording to the overlying rock strength and thickness of 10 shallow coal seams in China, the strata are classified into four types: weak and laminated strata (hereinafter referred to as WL), weak and massive strata (WM), strong and laminated strata (SL), and strong and massive strata (SM). The four types of strata, together with longwall panel height (M), panel length (L), and seam depth (H) are factors that influence the loads on hydraulic power supports. Principal component analysis was used to study the seven influencing factors. It turns out that seam depth (H) is multicollinear with WL, WM, SL, and SM. Thus the enumerated seven factors are divided into two models. In Model 1, six factors; panel height, panel length, and layer thickness of the four type strata are involved. In Model 2, three factors; panel height, panel length, and seam depth are included. Using multivariate regression analysis, two equations to calculate loads on supports are obtained for each model. The equations were applied to shallow coal seams. The equation of Model 1 is more accurate than that of Model 2, but Model 2 could be further used in deep coal seams. The equations were coded through VB programming to simplify the calculation.IntroductionTo ensure coal production in the long term, the focus of coal mining has been gradually shifted to the western areas of China in recent years due to rich coal resources in this region. Most of the coal seams in this area are shallow but the support loads are abnormally high. In these circumstances, the chock loads estimating methods used in the past do not work. If the rated working resistance of a support is larger than needed, the shield is unable to fully perform, while a lower working resistance would lead to accidents like shield crushing or even casualties. This problem is frequently found in shallow coal seams such as Shenfu-Dongsheng, Yulin, Tuha, Lingwu etc. (Zhang, 2011). Thus, to ensure safety and efficiency during mining, the estimation of support loads and selection of supports are of great significance."

"Four sulphide minerals - pyrite (FeS2), pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS), pentlandite ([Ni,Fe]9S8), and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) - contain the base metals and most of the iron in concentrates of platinum group metals (PGMs). In the pyrometallurgical processing of PGM concentrates these sulphides form a matte during smelting, and iron and sulphur are removed from the matte during the converting process. This paper discusses the roasting of Merensky concentrate in air before smelting, with the purpose of reducing the matte load to the converter.Roasting tests were conducted in a bench-scale rotary kiln at temperatures from 350°C to 700°C. The concentrate tested contained 17.4% sulphur and consisted of 23% pyrrhotite, 16% pentlandite, 11% chalcopyrite, and 2% pyrite. The particles were fine (d50 = 22 µm), and all the sulphide particles were liberated. Roasting in air at 550°C and 650°C for 20 minutes removed respectively 60% and 70% of the sulphur. The iron in the sulphides was oxidized to Fe3O4 (magnetite) at temperatures below 500°C and to Fe2O3 (haematite) at temperatures above 550°C. At 700°C the bed sintered and copper oxides formed. At temperatures below 450°C oxidation was incomplete: pyrrhotite remained and only 30% of the sulphur was removed. Smelting tests were conducted to assess matte fall and the deportment of copper and nickel to matte. It was evident that roasting resulted in lower matte falls (a drop of approximately 60%) compared with matte falls from unroasted concentrate. The iron and sulphur levels in the matte were reduced to below 3.5% and 22% respectively.This paper also briefly describes the mechanisms by which pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and pentlandite are oxidized during roasting. For chalcopyrite, the mechanism proceeds through an intermediate solid solution phase, which extends from Cu1.02Fe1.04S2 to Cu2.04Fe0.72S2 to a copper-rich solid solution of bornite (Cu4Fe1.4S4-Cu2S). The oxidation of pentlandite proceeds through a monosulphide solid solution (Ni0.39Fe0.53S-Ni0.74Fe0.15S) to a solid solution of heazlewoodite ([Ni,Fe]3}xS2). These mechanisms are explored in relation to chemical thermodynamics and microstructures."

Geotechnical conditions exposed by the phased exploration programs have had a major impact on the selection of excavation and support methods, dewatering requirements, size of openings, vertical alignment, and estimated cost of construction for the Beacon Hill Tunnel and Station section of the “Link” Light Rail. Beacon Hill is comprised of a very complex glacial geology, including numerous slickensided fractures, injected sand dikes, and multiple perched groundwater levels as revealed by a phased boring program and exposed in a test shaft. The Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) presents this complex geology along with a “tool box” of alternative additional support systems to accommodate the varying ground conditions during construction of the station excavation. Additional explorations will also be accomplished during construction to further refine the geotechnical interpretations and provide an opportunity to use pro-active ground improvement techniques to optimize the station excavation and support requirements.
