La compañía fue fundada en el siglo XX y tiene sus altos hornos en Monterrey, capital del estado Nuevo León, donde se funden los minerales de fierro que provienen de los yacimientos del Cerro de Mercado, situado en la región central de Durango. El yacimiento consiste de cuerpos inclinados hacia el oeste y que tienen contactos bien definidos con la roca encajonante; Asimismo afloran cuatro cuerpos de mineral, de los cuales el más grande tiene cerca de 800 metros de longitud. El cuerpo mineral está dividido en dos partes por resbalamientos producidos por fallas en la porción occidental del valle; los mismos que junto con la erosión, han producido la peculiar topografía de esta parte del estado de Durango. Possible applications of cyclone thickeners for: (1) clarification of the washery water and, (2) recovery of fine coal from the plant bleed. The paper shows: (1) that it is possible to remove all particles including the very finest, from the circulating water, thus obtaining a closed water system and, (2) that reduction of the ash content of the solids of the plant bleed is feasible by means of cyclone thickeners. Performance data for different size cyclones is given in the form of graphs.

El presente texto aborda los resultados de tres estudios realizados por Microscopía Electrónica de Barrido con Energía Dispersiva (SEM/EDS) en el Laboratorio de Caracterización Mineralógica, donde destaca la importancia de la técnica en el sector de minería y materiales. El primer estudio comprende el análisis de los contenidos de fierro y manganeso en concentrado de zinc, donde se verifica que la esfalerita contiene fierro cerca del límite aceptable de 5%. El segundo estudio realiza una caracterización mineralógica de muestras con minerales de plata, para conocer el estado de la plata (inclusión, solución sólida, encapsulada), con qué minerales está asociada y si puede ser liberada. Finalmente, el tercer estudio refiere el análisis de secciones fracturadas de tornillos de latón para evaluar las causas del rompimiento prematuro de los tornillos.

In underground coal mining, particularly room-and-pillar methods, the coal pillars play a significant role in roof stability. If the pillar dimensions are increased, the pillar bearing capacity also increases, but more coal remains in the pillar and therefore the recovery of mining operation decreases. Therefore, determining the optimum pillar dimension based on technical, economical and performance parameters is important. In this paper, the coal pillar is designed by using the concept of ground reaction curve (GRC). For this purpose, the GRC for coal pillars is drawn and then the elastic and plastic zone of coal pillar behavior is determined. Based on elastic and plastic zone, different equations are presented to draw a pillar reaction curve and the process of coal pillar design based on GRC is explained. As a case study, this new technique is applied to study the coal pillar state in Tabas coal mine of Iran. The results show that the presented new approach is successfully used in the design of the optimum coal pillar dimensions, and also determines the elastic and plastic behavior limit, which is important especially for the logical design of yield pillars.

The behavior of rocks subjected to dynamic loading conditions under explosion includes sufficient information about hydrodynamic variables such as pressure P, mass velocity U, internal energy E, specific volume V and density p as functions of time. Measurement of dynamic characteristics in compressed media with manganin wire sensors has become common in the past few years, but the experimental data for certain media, such as rock, do not provide an exhaustive description of rock's behavior in the near zone of an explosion, which is highly responsible for the transformation of energy of explosives.

El proceso de lixiviación empleando cianuro en medio alcalino como agente lixiviante, se ha constituido como la práctica universal para la extracción de los metales preciosos, desde que J.S. MacArthur y los hermanos R. y W. Forrest, patentaron la técnica en 1889. La cianuración es un proceso hidrometalúrgico basado en la utilización de soluciones de cianuros alcalinos como medio químico para lixiviar el oro y la plata contenidos en menas auríferas/argentíferas. Los cianuros más importantes que se usan en este procedimiento son el de potasio y el de sodio. El presente documento detalla las pruebas de lixiviación con un reactivo alterno al cianuro de sodio considerando las diversas características mineralógicas del mineral que se procesa en la Planta.

A research effort has been undertaken, under Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario (WSIB) sponsorship, to characterize the support capabilities of conventional and innovative spray-on lining materials for mitigating dynamic failure effects created by simulated rockbursts. Conventional spray support media, such as shotcrete and fibrecrete linings, and a variety of new spray-on lining materials [thin, spray-on liners (TSLs)], typically polymer-type thin coatings, were subjected to simulated rockburst influence. For baseline comparison, conventional rockbolt and bolt-and-mesh support products were also evaluated. Observation of lining performance was undertaken through completion of field-scale support and rock detonation trials. Controlled blasting tests were conducted at the Queen’s University Explosives Laboratory to examine the effectiveness of the variety of surface coating agents for modifying dynamic rock spalling processes. All tests were performed upon largely undisturbed and homogeneous rock materials in highly repeatable fashion. All blasts were observed seismically and photographically to provide detailed information concerning rock motion, surface fracturing, ejected fragment motion and support liner survivability characteristics. These material comparison trials were performed to assess the relative effectiveness of a wide range of currently available area support techniques for suppressing hazards associated with dynamic rock ejection. The results of this study validate that thin, spray-on linings may be equally as effective, and often better, than conventional support materials at mitigating rockburst or like damage in highly stressed mine environments.

The latest downturn in the world’s metal prices has forced many mining companies to focus on cost reduction and productivity improvements to remain competitive. Maintenance represents a significant part of the overall operating costs in the mining industry. A structured, proactive maintenance approach, such as reliability-centered maintenance, can achieve cost reductions and productivity improvements. Remote condition-monitoring systems are becoming commonplace because they have the potential to identify problems before failure. Detection of equipment degradation before failure will enable repairs to be scheduled, thereby reducing costs and interruptions to production. The mining industry is in the midst of uncertain times. Decreasing commodity prices, demand, head grade and capital availability along with increasing environmental requirements have put pressure on mining companies to significantly reduce costs to maintain short- and long-term viability. Corporations are looking at expansion, merger/consolidation and financial/hedging programs to achieve these cost reductions. Mines are reducing costs by eliminating all but essential expenditures, increasing production levels, reducing overtime and investing in new technologies.

Caving is a mass mining method that is normally applied to large, low grade orebodies because of its low production cost and high capacity. However, equipment breakdown and poor draw management can cause mining costs to exceed that of all other mining methods. One way to minimize the effect of disruptions in the mining cycle is to use Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) for long-term scheduling. This paper describes a MILP goal program which has the dual objectives of minimizing deviation from the ideal draw profile while achieving a production target. Schedule optimization is performed using a life of mine approach in which all production periods are optimized simultaneously. The underlying assumption being that material mixing in the short-term (between monthly optimization cycles) has a minimal effect on the long-term state of the panel. Schedule optimization is carried out using six general constraint types to model and control production. The constraint types define: deviation from ideal practice, panel state, material flow conservation, production quality, material flow capacity and production control. These constraints define production targets and drive production toward the ideal profile while maintaining correct mining practice. Application of the model using production scheduling data for a De Beers kimberlite mine. It is shown how different production control constraints regulate production from individual drawpoints as well as recovery of the ideal panel profile by implementing an optimised draw schedule.

The mining industry is generally regarded as a high risk industry, mainly because of the difficulties in estimating the tonnage and grade of mineral resources, the fluctuations in metal prices, mining problems and other problems which occur with mining in offshore and remote locations, such as appropriation or disruption to supply. As a consequence, finance providers require a high reward from mining projects. In the past two decades, the development of "mega" projects has led to the packaging of the finance becoming more sophisticated. Some would see this move as a measure of the evolution of banking rather than an intrinsic facet of mining finance itself. Project financial managers now require a thorough knowledge of all the financial tools which are available and have to be aware of the funding options so that they can put together a finance package which minimises the cost of the financing with the risk spread adequately between the partners of the financing. The different sources and types of finance for mining projects are described herein along with the factors which determine their costs. To understand the ramifications of financing mining projects, it is essential to appreciate the fundamental difference between debt and equity, which illustrates the importance of gearing. Costs of finance are determined by the interaction of supply and demand forces. Bankers and other financiers have become more adept at isolating a wide selection of risk elements and have devised a formidable range of insurance mechanisms. There is still a lot of money looking for good project risks and if a good project is properly presented and structured, financing can be obtained in today's market.

As the principles set forth by these writers are of great interest, and have, in most cases, been generally accepted, the author will review them in the hope that by discussion some more knowledge may be brought to bear on many points connected with the subject.The definition of slime at the present time is not a standard one, and varies according to different authorities, some defining slime as ore crushed to such a fineness that it will pass through a screen of standard size, say 150 or 200-mesh, in water (1, 2);others as that part of the finely-crushed material which is in the physical condition which causes it to remain in. suspension in water, and possesses pr?perties which render it almost unleachable (3). This paper describing the methods and costs of milling scheelite ore at the Silver Dike concentrator of the Nevada-Massachusetts Co., Inc., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. In the Silver Dike mill tungsten ore which contains about 1 per cent of scheelite is treated at the maximum rate of 45 tens per 24 hours by tabling followed by magnetic separators to clean the table concentrates. Unusually high-grade concentrates are produced which average between 70 and 75 per cent of W03.

A Samarco Mineração utiliza combustível sólido para geração de energia térmica nas pelotas de minério de ferro. Este insumo torna possível a redução da utilização de gás natural na etapa de queima nos fornos de endurecimentos e ainda melhora a qualidade física das pelotas. O tamanho das partículas é chave para eficiência do processo e a cominuição destes combustíveis é realizada nas plantas de moagem da empresa, tanto para o antracito quanto para o coque verde de petróleo. Tradicionalmente, um dos principais itens de controle de moabilidade do insumo é o HGI (Hardgrove Grindability Index), que avalia a dureza do combustível sólido no processo de moagem. Porém, este parâmetro não reflete as dificuldades produtivas encontradas nas plantas de moagem da Samarco Mineração. Portanto, foi desenvolvida metodologia através de uma modificação da equação proposta por Bond para avaliação energética de moagem. A lei de Bond tem origem empírica e considera que a energia consumida na cominuição é proporcional ao comprimento das fissuras iniciais que se desencadeiam na quebra das partículas. A metodologia proposta, no presente trabalho, avalia com maior representatividade as dificuldades encontradas na cominuição destes insumos. Ainda, testes em planta piloto de moagem de combustíveis sólidos foram realizados para validação da abordagem.

Abstract The design of deep excavation pits in rock mass is dependent as well on the mechanical properties of the rock mass as for example the orientation and the type of discontinuities like bedding planes, joints and fissures, the length of the discontinuities (persistence), the grade of weathering, the strength of rock mass, and the shear strength in the discontinuities, etc., and also on the respective boundary conditions specific for the project, and here especially the geometrical boundary conditions. The basic mutual influences and interactions between these boundary conditions are explained and exemplary presented at an excavation pit with a depth of 18,5 m, situated at a slope with a surface near groundwater table. Résumé La planification des excavations profondes dépend aussi bien de la qualité mécanique du roc, par exemple la location de la texture de la surface de moindre résistance, le degré de rupture, le degré de décomposition, la dureté du roc et la résistance limitée au cisaillement de la texture de la surface de moindre résistance que des conditions limitées spécifiques pour le projet, ici en particulier des conditions limitées géométriques. Les influences et interactions essentielles et mutuelles entre les conditions limitées isolées seront expliquées et présentées à l’aide d’une excavation 18,5 m de profondeur, située sur une pente où le niveau des eaux souterraines est près de la surface. Kurzfassung Die Planung tiefer Baugruben im Fels hängt sowohl von den mechanischen Eigenschaften des Fels wie z.B. der räumlichen Lage des Trennflächengefüges, dem Durchtrennungsgrad, dem Verwitterungsgrad, der Gesteinsfestigkeit sowie der Scherfestigkeit des Trennflächengefüges als auch von den projektspezifischen Randbedingungen hier insbesondere von den geometrischen Randbedingungen ab. Die wesentlichen gegenseitigen Einflüsse und Interaktionen zwischen den einzelnen Randbedingungen werden aufgezeigt und an einer 18,5 m tiefen Baugrube in Hanglage mit oberflächennahem Grundwasser vorgestellt.

"El presente texto describe el trabajo de las minas de plata, oro y cobre durante la Pre-historia en Chile. En Hauntajaya y Yabricoya los indios trabajaron el cloruro de plata o plata córnea y la plata nativa. Sin embargo, los atacameños y diaguitas, fueron los únicos habitantes prehistóricos que practicaron la metalurgia, aunque no utilizaron el fierro en ninguna de sus formas, debido a su alto punto de fusión. Asimismo, en los primeros cateos o prospecciones que realizaron los indios, buscaban rocas y minerales, tales como la arcilla, el cuarzo, la cuarcita, el sílex, el lapislázuli, la obsidiana, la calcedonia, el jaspe, el ágata, el pedernal y los trabajaron con un gran conocimiento empírico de clivaje para la confección de herramientas y adorno. El método usado en la prospección de minerales fue a través del color, cobre, verde siticatado llamado por los indígenas 'Tanca"" y el carbonato de cobre (malaquita- azurita) llamado por los españoles como ""cardenillo"". Asimismo, los cateadores de minas prehistóricas contribuyeron en el norte de Chile, -en tanto bagaje de conocimientos- de los cuales, los cateadores hasta la época de la República, se sirvieron a la gran aventura de los derroteros de minas. From their study of the anisotropy of grain boundary mobility in aluminum, the authors conclude that tilt boundaries have a higher mobility than twist boundaries because the atomic misfit at the pure-twist boundary is relatively small compared to the misfit at a tilt boundary for a given amount of misorientation. If this is true, then one would expect a twist boundary to have a lower grain boundary energy than the corresponding tilt boundary. Fig. 6, taken from the work of Gjostein and Rhines,10 shows that this is indeed the case for [001]-cu tilt and twist boundaries in the high-angle region, thus lending support to the authors' conclusion.

In spite of the increasingly polarized and politicized view of climate science and climate change in the United States, many of the principles behind the ?theory? of Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) or Global Climate Change (GCC) are in fact firmly established both in fundamental physics and detailed observations and are widely accepted elsewhere. The discovery of the earth?s ?greenhouse effect? dates back nearly 200 years to the work of French mathematician and physicist Joseph Fourier in 1824 and 1827. In 1872, John Tyndall an English physicist and mountaineer, described the capacity of various gasses to absorb radiant heat. He identified water vapor and carbon dioxide as the principal ?greenhouse? gasses. The work of Fourier and Tyndall was the foundation for the theory that increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere might be responsible for an increase in global temperatures developed by the brilliant Swedish chemist Svante August Arrhenius in 1896. This was backed up by the additional work of Gilbert Callendar in the 1930s, and Gilbert Plass, Hans Suess and Roger Revelle in the 1950s. There is little scientific dispute about the physics by which this occurs: carbon dioxide in the atmosphere absorbs long wave radiation that would otherwise escape into space, thus warming the lower atmosphere and respective temperatures worldwide. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), approximately 2500 climate scientists from around the world, has concluded that increases in carbon dioxide resulting principally from the burning of fossil fuels are responsible for most of the continuing increases in global temperatures (IPCC, 2007). NASA?s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) states; ?The ten warmest years all occur within the 12-year period 1997-2008? (GISS, 2009). 2009 was the second warmest year on record and 2010 was tied with 2005 for the warmest year on record (GISS, 2010, 2011). The science is in fact settled; the earth has not cooled since 1998 as some have claimed. It continues to warm as evidenced by not only surface temperature records but also ocean temperature records as well as changes in physical and biological systems (IPCC, 2007).
