Asbestos crystallizes within rock formations undergoing intense deformation characterized by folding, faulting, shearing, and dilation. Some of these conditions have prevailed during formation of the taconite iron ore deposits in the eastern Mesabi Iron Range of Minnesota. This range includes the Peter Mitchell Taconite Mine at Babbitt, Minnesota. The mine pit is over 8 miles long, up to 1 mile wide. Fifty three samples were collected from 30 sites within areas of the pit where faulting, shearing and folding occur and where fibrous minerals might occur. Eight samples from seven collecting sites contain significant amounts of ferroactinolite amphibole that is partially to completely altered to fibrous ferroactinolite. Two samples from two other sites contain ferroactinolite degraded to ropy masses of fibers consisting mostly of ferrian sepiolite as defined by X-ray diffraction and TEM and SEM X-ray spectral analysis. Samples from five other sites contain unaltered amphiboles, however some of these samples also contain a very small number of fiber bundles composed of mixtures of grunerite, ferroactinolite, and ferrian sepiolite. It is proposed that the alteration of the amphiboles was caused by reaction with water-rich acidic fluids that moved through the mine faults and shear zones. The fibrous amphiboles and ferrian sepiolite collected at the Peter Mitchell Mine composes a tiny fraction of one percent of the total rock mass of this taconite deposit; an even a smaller amount of these mineral fragments enter the ambient air during mining and milling. These fibrous minerals thus do not present a significant health hazard to the miners nor to those non-occupationally exposed. No asbestos of any type was found in the mine pit. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Adicionalmente, el autor destaca el rol solidario y reactivador de la industria minera en el marco de la emergencia nacional por COVID -19.

AT Williams College, in the quaint old New England town where people still go to the post office for their mail, an interesting institution has come into being as one of the aftermaths of the peace conference at Paris in 1919. The war taught the world many things about economics although much remains to be learned and more to be appreciated. B. M. Baruch, H. A. Garfield, president of Williams, and others who took part in the conference at Paris or in preparation for it, feeling that benefits would accrue from informal friendly discussion of the problems that lead to political differences between peoples, called together a summer conference in 1920. This has now become an annual affair and is coming to be looked upon as an important center for developing and stimulating public opinion. Membership in the Institute is by invitation and the lists change to correspond with the particular subjects taken up. Each year a number of distinguished foreign public men are invited to be the guests of the Institute and to meet men and women from various parts of the United States interested in their special subjects. Round tables, general conferences, and public lectures are the means employed to bring out discussion. The first are organized by groups, each including usually 25 to 40 people interested in a special subject and meeting three times a week for informal discussion. Teachers, writers, economists, engineers, business men, indeed men of all vocations and many shades of opinion, are brought together. Once a week each round table presents in general conference with the members of all other groups the more general conclusions reached in its own decisions. Afternoon and evening lectures are given by the foreign guests and these are open to the public. The lectures and the general conferences are reported widely in the press but the proceedings as a whole are not printed, no resolutions are passed, and no action is taken or contemplated. The whole plan is to furnish a forum for free discussion in hopes that the difficulties of various groups and peoples may be taken up sympathetically and good understanding promoted. There is no creed, doctrine or dogma to which the Institute is committed and widely different views are currently presented. The constant effort is to bring out points of view and the reasons for them rather than to build up convincing arguments favourable to a specific action

"L'objectif principal recherché lors du broyage d 'un minerai est de libérer adéquatement ses valeurs utiles en vue de leur concentration ultérieure. La pratique courante consiste à tenter d'obtenir un produit de broyage d'une granulométrie constante. Malheureusement, les propriétés texturales des minéraux utiles varient naturellement dans un gisement et une telle stratégie n'entraine pas toujours pour ces minéraux un degré de libération constant. Pour un rendement optimal du procédé de concentration, cette variable très importante doit donc être périodiquement vérifiée.Jusqu'à maintenant, la plupart des études de libération des minerais se font en examinant des sections polies de particules du minerai broyé. Le GRAAIM a récemment assemblé un système modulaire d'analyse d'images qui servira en grande partie à des mesures automatiques du degré de libération des minéraux. Le système s'avère relativement peu coûteux comparativement à la plupart des analyseurs de texture conventionnels si l'on considère que plusieurs de ses composantes, par exemple le miniordinateur, sont utilisées à une foule d'autres applications, et il permet de plus une grande souplesse d'utilisation puisque l'on a qu'à construire des algorithmes de mesure et de calcul en fonction de l'objectif recherché. Des programmes particuliers permettant des études automatiques de libération sur des sections polies de particules ont ainsi été élaborés. Ils permettent également des mesures de teneurs et de distributions granulométriques apparentes des particules. Des résultats obtenus dans le cas de minerais de fer sont brièvement présentés afin d'illustrer la technique."

El presente trabajo está enfocado en recuperar los metales como plata y plomo de las escorias, mediante el proceso metalúrgico de lixiviación ácida/super ácida y flotación. Estas escorias son pasivos ambientales generados en los años 80’s, JS Consulting en el área de investigación metalúrgica desarrollo el proceso de lixiviación y flotación para lograr recuperar la Ag y Pb de las escorias y de esta manera darle valor en el mercado de dicho material que no tenía valor. Los resultados obtenidos fueron muy favorables, en la lixiviación de las escorias se logro separar hierro, silice, zinc, cobre de la plata y plomo, estos dos últimos elementos quedaron en el solido logrando una concentración comercialmente en el mercado.

Para tal fin, se utiliza la técnica del concreto lanzado (shotcrete), malla metálica y pernos de roca, puesto que ofrecen versatilidad y capacidad portante. En este sentido, el presente texto describe la importancia de dicha técnica a partir de su estructura, filosofía, dimensionamiento, dosificación, rebote, problemas operativos típicos y formas de medición de pago, así como los resultados de campo de una obra proyectada en una mina de la selva central.

En general los indicadores de rendimiento y eficiencia están en función a los parámetros operativos de entrada y salida del proceso y para el caso del sistema de compresión de aire se dispusieron una serie instrumentos y dispositivos tales como medidores de energía eléctrica, sensores de flujo y presión en la descarga de cada compresor y sensores de condiciones ambientales como humedad relativa, temperatura ambiente y presión atmosférica. Todos estos parámetros son integrados al sistema de control de Minera Poderosa,donde se realizan los procesamientos y cálculos para la medición de rendimiento y eficiencia en línea, además de una estructura de reportes donde también se despliegan alarmas, horas de operación, horas de falla, entre otros.

The primary problems of pillar design in seams subject to interaction are due not only to difficulties in predicting loading, but also to the often unsymmetrical nature of the stress fields. The effects of uneven stress fields on failure patterns within a pillar were studied wing a two dimensional finite element method. Lower seams, including ultra- close mining situations were evaluated considering conventional pillars. Pillar case study data for under mining were analyzed to determine if empirical trends in stable pillar sizing could be derived. Recommendations for multi-seam pillar design are made, based on anticipated loading conditions within a pressure bulb. Applications of the research results are demonstrated using case studies

En este sentido, la composición química y mineralógica contiene la base de un diseño donde se aplica una lixiviación acuosa con alta presión de oxígeno y se realiza a través de tres etapas: lixiviación oxidante de los concentrados, recuperación del cobre y zinc por electrólisis y la recuperación de la plata y del plomo por lixiviación con cloruro de sodio.

A wide-ranging base of jig data was collected from various types of commercial jigs in 9 coal preparation plants in China, and a complete data analysis was made. It was found that the sharpness ofseparation was very variable, which demonstrates the complex interplay of the many factors which influence jig performance. Tests showed that there exist optimum frequency ranges in each compartment of a jig. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that the sharpness of separation is most sensitive to the intake fraction ofthe air cycle, the frequency, and the feed rate. By means of non-linear curve fitting techniques and statistical analysis, several mathematical models were developed to describe both partition curve and the jig performance, for simulation purposes.

Activities of COO in the three solid solution series COO-MgO, COO-MnO, and COO-"FeO" have been determined at 1200°C by equilibrating oxide samples with a metal phase (cobalt or a Co-Fe alloy) in atmospheres of known oxygen activities. The systems COO-MgO and COO-MnO are ideal, within limits of experimental error, whereas the system COO-"FeO" shows a slight positive deviation from ideality at the temperature of this investigation. KNOWLEDGE of activities of oxide components in solid solutions is necessary for the calculation of the cation distribution among coexisting oxide phases in many important metallurgical, ceramic, and geochemical systems. Very few activity-composition curves are available for such systems at the present time. A start on the prodigious job of obtaining such data has been made by studies of solid solutions with simple sodium chloride type structure containing NiO or "FeO" as a component.1-3 The present paper describes similar studies for solid solutions with sodium chloride type structure containing COO as a component. For the systems COO-MgO and COO-MnO, the activity solid solution is determined by the equation Here po and are the oxygen activities of the gas phase in equilibrium with the phase assemblages metallic cobalt plus oxide solid solution, and metallic cobalt plus pure COO, respectively. In the system CoO-"Fe07', the metal phase is a Co-Fe alloy rather than pure cobalt. In this case the activity of COO in the oxide solid solution is calculated from the equation where a& is the activity of cobalt in the metal phase. Because the system Co-Fe is close to ideal4 and the metal phase appearing in the present work contains less iron than cobalt even at the lowest COO concentrations of the oxide phases used may be set equal to N . "Since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) in mid-2008, capital has been more difficult to access. Mining projects must contend with projects from other industries for scarce capital. A decision to invest available capital in mineral projects requires that valuation be conducted to assess the expected return on the projects. The discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis is generally applied for the valuation of mining projects, whereby future cash flows are discounted to present value using an appropriate discount rate. The discount rate significantly affects the outcome of a valuation. Economic and finance theory provides tools to calculate discount rates. The discount rate must account for factors such as the risk and stage of development of the mineral project; hence the appropriate discount rate to utilize in a project is often a subject of debate.The discount rate is the weighted sum of the cost of debt and equity. There are several methods for determining the cost of equity. This study considers the commonly applied Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model because of their simplicity and availability of parameters required to estimate the cost of equity. This study explores how differences in the cost of equity obtained by these two methods can be explained for a mining environment. Data for empirical analysis were collected from the I-Net Bridge, McGregor BFA, and Bloomberg databases. It was found that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model provides better estimates of the cost of equity compared to the CAPM under depressed market conditions. Therefore, this research recommends that Gordon’s Wealth Growth Model be used to estimate the discount rates for mining projects during periods of depressed market conditions."

Rapid changes in technology and human resources trends require the mining industry to plan carefully for new work camps. The abandonment of the “mining town” concept and rapid increases in the adoption of long distance commuting have intensified the need for improved planning and monitoring of existing and upcoming operations. New mines will have an increasing Aboriginal participation in their workforce and will mostly to be located in remote and in extreme weather conditions. In this sense, the intensification of the use of the commuting system has increased the need for improved planning and monitoring of upcoming operations. Given that mining development is experiencing a surge in activity in Canada, particularly in remote and northern locations significant number of individuals will get jobs that involve mine camp communities. Some employees will spend half of their working lives at the mine site for a period of time that can last up to 30 years. Even though investments have been made towards particularly high quality physical environments, mine camp policies, programs and employee quality of life in mine camps have not been studied in any depth.

Um grande esforço foi realizado por diversas empresas, visando à melhoria de nosso parque industrial e, nos últimos 10 anos, o nível de investimento no setor foi importante. Este cenário, fez com que novas tecnologias surgissem por aqui, facilitando ao corpo técnico avançar com soluções mais eficazes para carroçarias. A disponibilidade local de todos os estágios da cadeia produtiva, desde a matéria-prima, até a adequação das linhas de manufatura das montadoras, afasta o efeito da variação cambial. A ideia que ficou impregnada no mercado brasileiro, é que novos materiais e tecnologias são caros para nossa região. O que não é verdade. Estudos de caso realizados antes de 2005, incluíam no preço, taxas de câmbio e internação, pois consideravam o produto importado. Com a localização este custo extra reduz. Ações governamentais atuam, hora incentivando localizações, hora definindo objetivos de emissões e segurança. O programa INOVAR AUTO estabelece algumas metas importantes de emissões, percentual de localização e promove o P&D local. Todos estes ingredientes têm auxiliado no aumento da utilização de AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steel) nas estruturas veiculares. Usando os aços de alta resistência como base, temos um crescimento significativo. Em 2001 não passavam de 2% das carrocerias. Em 2008 chegaram a importantes 8%. Atualmente, estão próximo dos 15%.

Vibration levels on a variety of equipment in a South African opencast mine were measured in this study. The well-established ISO 2631-1 (1997) standard methodology was used for the computation of weighted root mean square (WRMS) and vibration dose value (VDV). This method was used to evaluate the whole-body vibration (WBV) on a wide range of equipment in the opencast mine using the two main parameters, namely the daily exposure A(8) which is based on the WRMS concept and the VDV which measures shocks. The results obtained show that while the majority of the equipment rendered exposure levels that are below the exposure limit value (ELV), exposure levels on about half of the equipment do exceed the exposure action levels. The study also highlights the importance of shock in the observed responses.

The leaching processes and mechanisms of weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth (RE) ores with ammonium sulfate were investigated for their high efficiency and low consumption exploitation. The leaching process is a typical reversible heterogeneous ion exchange reaction in liquid–solid systems. The raw ore and leached tailings were analyzed by SEM and FTIR. Results indicated that no dissolution or structural changes of the ores occurred during the leaching process. The migrations of RE3+, Al3+, and NHþ 4 in the leaching process were studied under various liquid–solid ratios. With increasing liquid–solid ratio, the content of NHþ 4 adsorbed on clay mineral by physical effect decreased, NHþ 4 adsorbed by ion-exchange increased, and the content of exchanged RE and Al increased until reaching equilibrium. The adsorption capacity of the RE ores for NHþ 4 remained about 0.61–0.63 mg/g. It was difficult to desorb NHþ 4 from RE ores with washing water alone. The leaching mechanism of Al was the same as RE, but the leaching of Al slightly lagged behind RE. At the optimal liquid–solid ratio of 0.4:1, the leaching efficiencies of RE and Al were 95.51% and 90.99%, respectively, and 56.65% of NHþ 4 remained in the leachate. After impurity removal and RE precipitation, the leachate can be reused by replenishing fresh leaching agent. The aim of this study is to enhance the leaching process of RE, restrain the leaching of impurities, and decrease the consumption of leaching agents.

In 1995, mining engineer Alain Gachet thought about using Earth-observation satellite imagery to search for precious minerals. The latest radar Earth-observation satellite, Canada’s RADARSAT-1, had just been successfully launched at the time, creating new opportunities for commercial applications. Gachet was working in Congo Brazzaville as an oil executive and general secretary of Elf Congo for the French national oil company Elf Aquitaine. He understood that the RADARSAT-1 launch promised new and cost-effective sources of data for mineral and oil exploration. “It was early 1996 before I ordered my firstRADARSAT-1 satellite images,” said Gachet. “I was first struck by the quantity of information delivered by the radar images. Linear structures and faults were clearly defined and subtle topographic features were tremendously enhanced,” he said. “It was ‘tree top geology,’ but this kind of information appeared to be key for finding new gold seams.”

O projeto de Substituição dos Controladores Lógicos Programáveis da Sinterização tem como objetivo a substituição dos PLCs da Família S5 (Siemens) já obsoletos por novos PLCs de tecnologia atual. O projeto de substituição foi dividido em etapas, sendo que a primeira etapa ocorreu em 2012. Consequentemente, teremos novos e antigos PLCs na mesma plataforma de controle até o fim do projeto. Os maiores desafios foram fazer toda a migração e adaptação de hardware e software dos novos PLCs ao restante da planta adequando-se aos sistemas existentes tais como PIMS, comunicação com o Nível 2, comunicação com balanças já obsoletas, SCADA, outros PLCs e concluir toda a migração da primeira etapa do projeto em apenas 60 dias compreendendo desde a desmontagem do sistema anterior, montagem dos painéis novos, recomissionar todo o I/O substituído, conciliar todos os testes à frio e parciais com demais serviços de manutenção programados e realizar o comissionamento a quente de toda a sequência da planta nos últimos 04 dias de implantação, quando todas as linhas de operação foram liberadas para testes. Em 2014 foi iniciada uma segunda etapa, e um PLC de 600 pontos de I/O já foi substituído em apenas 80 h usando uma nova estratégia.

"The development of stirred milling technology has proven to be an enabling technology in fine grained metallic deposits. The increased grinding efficiency allows for the economic size reduction required to produce saleable concentrates. This improvement has opened the door to retreatment projects such as reprocessing of historic gold mine tailings. Recently a VXP2500 stirred mill was installed at Casmyn Mining Zimbabwe Turk mine to allow the reprocessing of historic mine tailings. After commissioning, an extensive joint research project between Casmyn and FLSmidth Minerals was conducted to optimize the performance of the mill. This paper outlines the challenges encountered in the optimization program and the outcomes from the joint research project.INTRODUCTION The development of stirred mills has opened up many new opportunities to recover valuable minerals from refractory ores. Stirred mills have already been reported as an enabling technology for the processing of fine grained ores in lead/zinc applications (Pease, Young and Curry, 2005). Historically, conventional ball mills were unable to economically grind material fine enough to produce the required recovery or concentrate grade. This often resulted in the loss of valuable materials to the final plant tailings. The advent of stirred milling has now provided an opportunity which has both economic and environmental benefits, the reprocessing of historic mine tailings. Many tailings stockpiles now contain economic concentrations of gold because of the ability of stirred mills to efficiently and economically grind the tailings to liberation sizes. The primary advantage of reprocessing historic tailings is very low cost processing. Recovering the tailings is usually as simple as pumping the material into the reprocessing circuit. The disadvantage of reprocessing tailings is the low feed grade and greater difficulty in recovery valuable minerals at the same size distribution. The material has already been previously processed so fresh surface area or an increase in metal exposure is required. These are both provided by regrinding the tailings material."
