"Metix has introduced a three-piece ’deep-cooled’ copper slag tapblock into a six in-line copper matte settling electric furnace. The tapblock was designed without any internal refractory; it relies purely on the development and maintenance of a freeze lining on its hot face and within the tapping channel to protect the copper and promote the integrity of the surrounding endwall refractory lining. In addition, the geometry of the tapblock further supports the sidewall refractories, reduces the impact of funnelling and, therefore, the need for premature rebuilding of the furnace endwall, and facilitates easy removal and replacement of the wear components even under ’hot’ furnace conditions. Eighteen thermocouples embedded in the copper components ensure full resolution of the copper condition, enabling plant personnel to identify wear rates, estimate freeze lining thickness and stability, and schedule replacement of spares and wear components well in advance.At the time of writing the tapblock had been in operation for 6 months with approximately 350 000 t of slag having been tapped through it. Every indication is that the design will limit the need for premature relining of the furnace endwall due to rapid deterioration of the tapblock and its surrounding refractories. IntroductionNonferrous furnaces rely heavily on the maximization of refractory campaign life to increase profitability and reduce planned downtime. In large electric copper slag-cleaning furnaces utilizing insulating linings, campaign lives of six or more years are realistic if consideration is given to each aspect that can degrade the refractory lining during the campaign. An area that is particularly vulnerable is the slag tap-hole and the local surrounding refractory. To avoid premature relining of the furnace walls, every effort should be made to consider not only the tap-hole design itself, but also the selection of the sidewall refractory material and its construction immediately adjacent to the tap-hole, and furthermore the interplay between the tapblock and this adjacent refractory. A holistic approach to the design that considers these interdependent features in the slag tapping area can reduce the incidence of accelerated refractory wear (‘funnelling’), support the surrounding refractories to prevent their collapse, introduce easily replaceable wear components that can be exchanged with the furnace still ‘hot’, and encourage and maintain a stable freeze lining at the refractory hot face that maximizes the tapblock and refractory lifetime."

Anthony I?. Lucas died suddenly at his home in Washington, D. C., on Sept. 2, 1921. Captain Lucas, as he was known to us, was born in Dalmatia, Austria, in 1855, of Montenegrin ancestry. He was graduated as an engineer at the Polytechnic of Grate and served in the Austrian Navy as second lieutenant. In 1879, he obtained leave of absence and visited an uncle in the United States. After an extension of this leave of absence, in order to undertake an engineering engagement in the lumber district of Michigan, where he resided, he decided to become an American citizen. He was naturalized in May, 1885. His name was Luchich, but as his uncle had adopted the name of Lucas, which was more easily pronounced by Americans, from his entrance to this country, he used this Anglo-Saxon form. Without knowing this fact, upon first meeting him a person was sometimes surprised to note the rather Germanic pronunciation of the Captain. Although he subsequently revisited Austria with Mrs. Lucas, he made his permanent home at Washington, D. C. His son served with distinction in the A. E. F. during the World War. His activities in this country as a mining engineer were at first in Colorado and later in salt mining at Petit Anse and Belle Isle, La. During his salt investigations, his attention was directed toward the possibility of oil in the Gulf Coast region and in January, 1901, his well, the "Lucas Gusher," on Spindle Top, Tex., started a new era in the oil business and his reputation as discoverer made him famous throughout the world. Captain Lucas became a member of the A. I. M. E. in 1895. During 1914, 1915, 1918, and 1919, he was chairman of the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the Institute and was at all times prominent in Institute affairs. As to the personality of Captain Lucas, the lasting impression is of a courteous hospitable gentleman, genial, affable, obliging, and helpful with his advice br assistance to any colleague. He was sincere, honest, firm against all obstacles, backing his judgment with his own hard work along any course which he had determined to be correct. His value in the engineering world lies mainly in the petroleum industry. In the oil business all wild-catters are pioneers that deserve credit and gratitude upon their success. There are, however, names that particularly stand out in our history. Drake conquered such obstacles as ridicule, lack of finances, and started the oil business. In 1901, Captain Lucas had the conviction that Spindle Top, a dome rising about 12 ft. above the coastal prairie south of Beaumont, Tex., contained commercial oil. ONE OF THE many services rendered by the Federal Bureau of Mines is the identification and general examination of ore and mineral samples. Many of these, coming from almost every State in the Union, are clay and shale samples. Other Government agencies, State geologists, universities, and other laboratories are often requested to make similar examinations. This publication describes methods of testing these samples. An earlier paper, published in 1943, described Bureau of Mines methods of testing such clays.3 This paper was to be followed later with another (part II) that would describe much more thorough testing than did the rather general outline of part I. Part I has been out of print for some time and needs revision, and part II was never written; hence, the present publication is designed to include part I and also those additions intended as part II. The tests presented in part I were simple, requiring only the ordinary equipment to be found in any good chemical laboratory. The second publication was to include a greater number of test procedures and information on increasing the accuracy and precision of those previously given.

Al ser el logueo geológico una actividad subjetiva, basada en la experiencia y habilidad del geólogo, fue necesario establecer un mecanismo de control de calidad del logueo geológico basado en datos objetivos con la finalidad de identificar posibles errores en dicho proceso, para lo cual se evaluó el comportamiento de las diferentes unidades litológicas en relación con las 43 leyes reportadas en los análisis geoquímicos practicados a las muestras de sondajes.

The projection of operating costs for mining, processing, and other site operating costs is an exercise which can be fraught with considerable peril. Not only are the physical characteristics of each mineral property unique, but a range of other factors will influence the consultant's approach to compiling cash flow estimates. This paper details some of the techniques used in estimating operating costs for use in order-of-magnitude cost studies and feasibility studies, and describes how to avoid common areas of difficulty. A series of examples relating to open pit gold mining and processing cost estimates illustrate these problems, and various corrective methods are described. The mining and treatment processes, and their associated cost elements, are followed in sequence of operation from on-going ore delineation through to disposal of the product. In addition the problem of assigning management, administration and overhead costs along with taxation allowances is addressed. Of critical importance is the application or possible misapplication of accrual procedures to the cost elements. In many cases such misapplication can introduce more pronounced errors with projects of short duration, such as the typical open pit/C.I.P. gold operation commenced in the last decade. The importance of providing verification of estimates depending upon the standard of the cost study is also investigated, and opinion is provided upon the minimum levels of verification necessary at various stages. Finally, the amalgamation of the various individual cost elements into a coherent whole is reviewed.

Asset availability has been a longstanding objective in mining and mineral processing plants around the world. Enormous resources in both dollars and manpower are invested in improvement efforts to achieve higher asset availability. One dimension of asset availability is the time equipment is out of service for large scale planned maintenance activity: grinding mills, kilns, furnaces, mobile equipment, shovels and draglines are all regularly taken out of service for extended repairs and service. The speed, cost and quality of these planned outages provide an opportunity to increase asset availability. Equipment shutdowns are projects that are executed in a compressed time period. This paper will describe how the overall time and cost of equipment shutdowns were significantly reduced at Cliffs Natural Resources Michigan Operations (CNRMO) through the introduction of the Critical Chain Project Management techniques.

"INTRODUCTION Toxic gases in the products from the detonation of explosives are one of the hazards in blasting underground. Investigations by the Bureau of Mines 4/5/ have shown that the oxygen balance of the explosive is an important factor in the control of toxic gases. This balance is considered in determining the composition of modern metal-mining explosives for blasting underground, and application of the concept has reduced the volume of toxic gases generated.The chemical nature of the material being blasted also influences the composition of the toxic gases produced. Under some conditions of blasting in massive pryrite, unsafe concentrations of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide have been found.Experiments with the O-J apparatus 8/ have shown that there is an increase in the volume of carbon monoxide in the gaseous products when permissible explosives are detonated in contact with coal dust. Thus, reactive materials of a reducing nature adjacent to explosives loaded in drill holes may decrease the effective oxygen balance of the explosive and cause the volume of toxic gases to increase.Several blasting accessories of reducing nature have been introduced recently for use in coal or metal mines or tunnels. In practice these are loaded adjacent to the explosive where conditions favor reaction with the products of detonation. The effects of this loading on the gaseous products obtained from the shot are indicated in this report. Broad consideration was not given the efficiency, usefulness, or over-all safety of these devices, but the practical significance of the hazard resulting from increased volume of carbon monoxide is discussed."

Some design and feasibility studies have been made into possible methods of economic recovery of sulphur from smelter gases emitted at Western Mining Corporation's Nickel smelter at KalgoorIie in Western Australia. The smelter discharges some 330 000 tonne/yr of sulphur dioxide in a stream of approximately 6 per cent by volume of S02.Three possible recovery methods have been considered:1. The manufacture of sulphuric acid using the contact process.2. The concentration of sulphur dioxide to a pure form using dimethyl aniline as an absorbing medium.3. The reduction to elemental sulphur using natural gas as the reducing agent.Design studies were carried out by final year chemical engineering undergraduate students at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1981 under the supervision of the author and other teaching staff of the chemical engineering department. These studies indicate that sulphuric acid manufacture is the economically preferred recovery route.Markets for sulphuric acid include several potential mineral processing applications and the established fertiliser industry.Sulphuric acid is currently manufactured in a number of plants located at coastal regions of Western Australia using imported sulphur. The sulphuric acid is then used for superphosphate or titanium dioxide pigment manufacture at adjacent plants.The possibility is considered of manufacturing superphosphate at Kalgoorlie from locally produced acid obtained from the smelter gases and from phosphate rock railed to the site from the coast. The advantages of such a scheme include improved scale and technology of operation compared with some existing coastal operations, use of a waste material to replace imported sulphur, and avoidance of costs and hazards associated with railing large quantities of sulphuric acid.

Tenova Pyromet has developed innovative technologies for copper smelting and electric slag cleaning furnaces. Based on client feedback and requirements, innovative designs have been developed to address key design areas and improve furnace reliability, operability and hygiene. These developments include the NovaLance™ lance system to prevent lance bending on top submerged lance furnaces, the SlagFlo™ slag tapping flow control device to better control bath levels and tapping rate for granulation, and an electrode seal for improved sealing directly onto the electrode casing to allow water-cooled electrode components to be located above the furnace roof. The potential application and benefits of these innovative designs are discussed. INTRODUCTION Tenova Pyromet has a long history in the engineering and supply of innovative electric furnace and related equipment for the base metals and platinum industries. Recently Tenova Pyromet has used its furnace equipment design experience to engineer innovative solutions for top submerged lance (TSL) furnaces, and potentially other furnace technologies. These equipment design solutions are developed to address specific operating challenges and operator requirements. Three of these innovative equipment developments are discussed in this paper. First the NovaLance™ lance technology to prevent lance bending during operation in TSL furnaces, such as used for primary copper smelting, is described. Lance bending has been identified as a significant problem for TSL furnace operators as it causes down time and affects furnace availability. The SlagFlo™ device to control the slag flow rate during tapping has been developed based on specific requirements in the mineral wool industry. The SlagFlo™ device can be used to control slag bath levels in primary smelting, converting and slag cleaning furnaces for base metals including copper. In addition, it can be remotely activated for the safe closing of slag tapholes located upstream from a water granulation system. Finally, Tenova Pyromet developed an electrode seal that seals directly onto an electrode surface. This is a special requirement related to base metals and platinum electric smelting and slag cleaning furnaces where furnace operators prefer to keep the water-cooled electrode equipment above the furnace roof. The seal can be used to seal directly onto the potentially hot and uneven surface of Söderberg, pre-baked and graphite electrodes.

The present rapid growth of coal stripping in the United States is a curious reversal of the tendency of mining to proceed from outcrop to depth. A combination of technical and economic factors bas stimulated the use of stripping methods until today many million tons of coal We being recovered by open cuts from sites that an earlier generation of engineers would have passed by as not commercially mineable or, if workable at all, only by underground methods. The total quantity of bituminous coal and lignite mined in the United States by stripping in 1928, the latest year for which detailed figures are available, was 19,789,000 short tons. Of this, 71,000 tons came from small workings not equipped with power shovels and 587,000 tons from properties in which stripping and underground work were carried on at the same mine; but as neither of these types is representative of modern stripping practice, they will be omitted in the discussion that follows. The total from strip pits proper in 1928 was 19,131,000 tons, produced by 176 pits employing 385 steam or electric shovels.3 Figures by States are given in Table 1. The ~2500 km long Kermadec-Tonga arc northeast ofNew Zealand is the longest continuous intraoceanic arc in the world. At least 94 volcanic centres along the arc are submarine, most (87 per cent) within the Kermadec arc (de Ronde et al, 2003a). Volcanic rocks range from basalt to rhyodacite with trace element and isotopic data indicating significant magma source heterogeneity both along and across the arc.   The entire ~1300 km of the Kermadec arc has now been surveyed for hydrothermal emissions (de Ronde et al, 2004). First-stage surveys utilised surface vessels. In February 1996, the first sulfide samples from the southern Kermadec arc were dredged from the Brothers and Rumble II West caldera volcanoes (R/V Tangaroa cruise TAN96/03; Wright et al, 1998; de Ronde et al, 2003b). In September 1998, low-temperature, diffuse venting was discovered at Monowai, Rumble III and Clark volcanoes, and high-temperature, black smoker venting was found within Brothers caldera (R/V Sonne cruise SO-135; Stoffers et al, 1999). The NZAPLUME cruise of March 1999 surveyed 13 volcanic centres (each mainly comprised of single, large volcanoes) of the southern Kermadec arc and documented hydrothermal emissions above seven of them (de Ronde et al, 2001; Baker et al, 2003; Massoth et al, 2003). In July 2001, additional mineralised and hydrothermally altered samples were dredged from Brothers volcano (R/V Tangaroa cruise TAN01/07). The NZAPLUME II cruise of May 2002 confirmed venting was still occurring at all the known hydrothermal sites, and that ten active vent sites occurred along the mid-part of the arc, between Brothers and Raoul Island (de Ronde et al, 2002). In September-October 2004, NZAPLUME III surveyed the northern-most part of the Kermadec arc where another nine volcanic centres are hydrothermally active.   Second-stage exploration of the Kermadec arc hydrothermal systems utilised deep submergence vehicles. In October-November 2004, the Japanese submersible Shinkai 6500 made four dives on Brothers. Samples recovered include vent fluids, chimneys, altered rocks and various animals and microbes. In April-May 2005, a more extensive expedition using the American submersible Pisces V made 23 dives on nine different volcanic centres, eight of them for the first time.   Extensive plume surveys show Brothers volcano is host to the most hydrothermally active sites of all those known along the Kermadec arc. In total, nine dives have been made on Brothers, six on the NW caldera site and three on the cone site. The NW caldera vent site is a long-term hydrothermal system that is today dominated by evolved seawater but has had episodic injections of magmatic fluid. The cone site is a nascent magmatic-hydrothermal system where crack zones localise upwelling acidic waters (de Ronde et al, 2005). A SE caldera site represents the main upflow of a relatively well-established magmatic-hydrothermal system on the seafloor where sulfide-rich chimneys are extant. Each of these different vent sites represent diverse parts of an evolving hydrothermal system, any one of which may be typical of submarine volcanic arcs.

The opportunity to evaluate the pile design procedures used on a major project is an infrequent occurrence. It is even more infrequent that the project involves piles with significant tension and horizontal capacities. This report synopsizes over twenty years of design and construction experience on just such a major pile founded structure. The philosophy governing foundation design procedures is described and discussed. The order and extent of full scale pile testing are evaluated. Principal points in the specifications are established and their effect on construction progress and claims are noted. The report concludes with recommendations for future projects.

This paper introduces the concept of design theory and methodology as applied to rock mechanics for more innovative and efficient design. This is a "frontier" research area in rock mechanics because although design is a fundamental foundation to all engineering branches, very little attention has been paid to this aspect in mining. In discussing the theoretical premise of design, this paper identifies the principles which form the basis of design activity. Also, from a practical viewpoint, the findings from a series of interviews with mine design engineers are presented. These findings lead to the identification of needs arising from overlooked design methodology in practice.

The present struggle for economic and industrial supremacy by the Communist world is against the United States, its main target, and the other Free World nations. The basis of industrial power is minerals, so the Communist nations are building up mineral production within their borders, often regardless of costs, and are acquiring quantities of mineral products from Free World countries for future use. They are contracting for additional supplies and advancing funds for the development of these quantities. A number of the less developed mineral producing countries of the Free World are being infiltrated by Communists and Communistic influence. This situation is well known, but as yet little has been done to oppose these activities or to awaken the public to their seriousness. The Communist countries are still far behind the Free World Nations in production of many essential minerals. But, shortages are being made up from Free World nations in exchange for petroleum, manganese ore, chromite and other products. Restrictions on shipments of strategic materials to Communist countries have not been maintained.

The primary object of the drive is to provide sites for gaining information regarding the behaviour of the ore-bodies well beyond the limits of the present exposures.Due to thermal conditions, the major portion of the work was done on a six-hour shift basis, in contrast to the normal one of seven hours, with a five-day week.
