ABSTRACT We report the results of a model-testing program to evaluate the strength characteristics of non-persistent joints. We describe the conditions under which new tensile cracks generate and propagate to connect existing joints so that the rock mass becomes fractured into several blocks, leading to a low strength. The strength of some models was equal to that along a single joint through the full sample length. In models with two joint sets, failure took place along a composite plane, partly sliding along a discontinuous joint and shearing through the intervening intact block of rock, or else by rotation and sliding of the blocks. This last failure mode could also lead to very low model strength. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Dieser Bericht beschreibt die Ergebnisse von Versuchen mit Modellfelsmassen um den Einfluâ von unterbrochenen Rissen in ihrer Widerstandsfähigkeit zu untersuchen. Es werden die Umstände beschrieben unter denen neue Zugrisse entstehen, sich verbreiten, sich mit bestehenden Rissen verbinden und die Felsmasse in mehrere Felsblöcke zerlegen und zu einer kleinen Widerstandsfestigkeit führen. Der Widerstand einiger Versuchskörper entsprach der Festigkeit eines Risses der die ganze Länge des Versuchskörpers überquert.Versuchkörper mit zwei Rißfamilien versagten unter einer zusammegesetzten Ebene, zum Teil mit Verschiebungen nach unterbrochenen Rißebenen die sich durch Schnittversagen intakter Felsblöcke verbinden, und zum Teil durch Drehungen und Verschiebungen einzelner Felsblöcke. Die letzte Versagunsart kann zu einer stark verminderten Widerstansfähigkeit führen. RÉSUMÉ Nous présentons les résultats de quelques essais fait sur des modèles évaluant les caractéristiques de résistance des fractures discontinues. Nous décrivons les conditions sous lesquelles des nouvelles fissures de traction peuvent s’engendrer et se propager pour faire la connection avec des fractures existantes, de façon que le rocher se fracture en plusieurs blocs, menant à une résistance réduite. La résistance de quelques modèles fut égale a celle d’une fracture traversant toute la longueur du modèle. Pour les modèles ayant deux ensembles de fractures, la rupture a eu lieu sur une surface mixte, causée d’une part, par le glissement sur une fracture discontinue et d’autre part, par la rupture à travers le pont de matériel intact; ou bien par rotation et glissement des blocs. Cette dernière façon de rupture peut aussi aboutir à une très faible résistance des modèles.

Fine tungsten was used to mimic gold and fine and coarse silica and magnetite to mimic gangue. The optimum flow rate of fluidisation water varied from 1.7 l/min for fine silica to 5.6 l/min for coarse magnetite. Overloading at optimum flow rate was then investigated. With fine silica gangue no overload occurred under any of the conditions studied, and there was very little overload with fine magnetite. Coarse silica caused appreciable overload, but only after a significant bed of tungsten had been formed; with fine magnetite gangue the onset of overloading occurred earlier. Finally, with coarse magnetite severe overloading occurred almost immediately. Overloading was modelled using a first-order kinetic rate constant for erosion of the concentrate bed and a critical mass of constant above which it takes place. The results clearly demonstrate the importance of removing oversize to maximise recovery, particularly with a high-density gangue

Outbursts, the sudden and violent out- pouring of material into mine openings, is a ground control problem increasingly encountered in the United States as deeper seams are developed. Outbursts, caused by several mechanisms, are the result of the loading of ground support systems be- yond their designed capacity to failure, manifested in a violent release of stored energy. There are several types of outbursts typical to deep underground coal mines. - Outbursts of the coal face due to the presence of pressure abutments in close proximity to the face. These outbursts are usually accompanied by liberation of large amounts of methane. - Instantaneous convergence of the ribs and floor due to overloading and failure of ribs which lengthens the beam of floor strata sometimes resulting in a chain reaction failure of the mine floor. - violent failure of the confined core of a pillar due to rapid loading beyond the yield point of the pillar.

"The theory of flocculation usually is in a state of flux, involves many diverse phenomena, and is complex and sometimes contradictory in details. Instead of attempting a general discourse, I shall discuss selected observations made at our Stamford Laboratories, which impinge on theoretical aspects in two somewhat distinct areas of flocculation. Since some of you many not be familiar with flocculation, and :.n order that we all attach the same meaning to the jargon used, I first would like to review briefly a generalized picture of what goes on.Assume we have a suspension of particles in water, with a distribution in the sizes of particles. The surfaces of the particles interact to some extent with the water--· tending to alter the extent of hydration, may generate some ion exchange, all being somewhat variable with time--developing a surface condition which is very complex in details. We refer to this suspension as the ""substrate.""In the usual situation, if the suspension is allowed to stand quietly, the large particles settle out first, with somewhat smaller particles settling more slowly, and then there is a portion of very fine material which takes a long time or doesn't settle out at all. This resistance to settling t~ the very fine particles results from many factors, but all relate back to the size and density of the particles, to their surface properties, and to the other components in the aqueous suspending medium."

NIOSH and the Illinois Clean Coal Institute are funding studies on characterization of coal and quartz dust in Interior Basin mines since 2009. Coal dust characteristics vary significantly and, are vital for the development of the engineering controls. This paper presents wettability characteristics of coal dust with respect to its chemical and physical properties, since wettability is considered to be a primary dust control technique. Particle size distribution, inter-particle interactions during wetting and quartz associations with organic and inorganic matter in coal seams is critical for understanding wetting phenomena. Silica content in the un-wetted fractions was found to be very high during wetting tests. Wetting of quartz may be limited by its association to hydrophobic materials as well as buoyancy forces resulting from particle size characteristics and particle-particle interaction in the wetting agent. Temperature of the wetting solution and effective contact time between dust particles and water droplets are found to be two important variables affecting the wettability. The characterization data obtained from this study can be utilized to develop engineering controls.

The thick alluvial sand and gravel deposits along the base of the San Gabriel mountain range in Southern California area have been mined for construction aggregates for over 100 years. Encroachment of high-density urban populations in this area has led to concentrated mining in a handful of open pit mines with single production faces reaching up to 55 m (175 ft) in height, and long transportation distances from the pit to the processing plant. Aggregate producers have responded to these challenges by developing innovative mining systems which enable low-cost, full-face mining of the alluvial material, and low cost delivery of this material to the plant.

This report summarizes a systematic 20-year study of the organic sulfur compounds in Wasson, Texas, crude oil and, to a lesser extent, of three other crude oils, that has culminated in some 200 individual sulfur-compound identifications. The development and application of special separation and identification techniques generally suitable for the characterization of sulfur compounds in any crude oil are discussed. This report reviews early sulfur literature covering petroleum sulfur compound identifications completed before this study was begun, and cites 58 papers resulting from this work. The sulfur compounds in petroleum, both as to type and quantity, have long been of concern to the petroleum industry, and such compositional data are not only of theoretical interest, but also of practical value.

El trabajo describe el desarrollo teórico-práctico de preriego del pad, el diseño de operación y la comparación de resultados obtenidos a nivel industrial en 2017-2018 con el sistema de riego convencional. Se destaca la rentabilidad de este tipo de aplicación.

Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. This article uses the case of the Royal Bafokeng Nation to argue that royalties and dividends from mineral resources, if managed well, can provide direct benefits to the surrounding community even while the state collects its share of mining revenues through taxation. The key to this model is the effective management of the resource income flowing into community coffers. Where some of this income may fund urgent interventions in the community, a portion of the income can also be used to establish an intergenerational wealth fund to meet the needs of future generations. As a depleting resource, minerals like gold and platinum are not a sustainable source of income, and must be replaced over time by more regenerative income streams. These strategies and dynamics are manifest in the Royal Bafokeng Nation?s status as both community and quasi-municipality, a labour hosting and a labour sending community, a mine operator and a mine owner. The Royal Bafokeng Nation also owns one of South Africa?s largest community-based investment companies, which channels revenue derived from platinum deposits into a broad investment portfolio that in turn funds an aggressive social development program for 150,000 people living in twenty-nine rural villages.

El presente trabajo describe la importancia de la aplicación de técnicas de análisis de cuencas sedimentarias en la exploración de minerales del área de Cajamarca. Para ello, se determinaron los espesores originales de las Formaciones Chimú, Santa- Carhuaz, Farrat e Inca y los porcentajes de disminución de espesor y con los resultados obtenidos, se diseño y analizó el gráfico de curvas corregidas por descompactación y sin corrección por descompactación. Asímismo, se explica la posible formación de fallas no tectónicas debido a la compactación diferencial y las unidades estratígráficas que comprende el estudio.

El presente texto refiere brevemente la historia del proceso de producción y costos del oro en las minas de Chile hasta el año 1956. Desde la llegada de los españoles al Perú, el prestigio de producción de oro en Chile despertó la codicia de los españoles, registrándose un aumento de producción de 2000 kg. entre los años 1545-1560, que posteriormente se reducirá a la mitad de los años restantes del siglo. Luego, en el siglo XVIII, la producción asciende de 400 kilos nuevamente hasta alcanzar los 3100 kg anuales. La guerra con España y el nuevo gobierno producen una decaída nuevamente en el oro, con promedios de 300 kg. Sin embargo, el periodo de 1931-1956 representa la etapa más importante enl la historia cuprífera de Chile puesto que el volumen de producción registra 6 000 kg. anuales. La contribución de este auge se debe a las medidas gubernamentales que buscaron resarcir la crisis económica producida en 1930, a través de la transformación de sus planteles de beneficio y posterior adaptación para la flotación de minerales de oro, asi como la construcción de plantas de cianuración, desarrollando la explotación en diversos yacimientos mineros. De otro lado, con el advenimiento de la Segunda guerra mundial la producción desciende a 2938 kg, siendo el valor más bajo registrado hasta 1933. Posteriormente y pese a la reducción de producción aurífera, hay un repunte del contenido del oro de minerales y concentrados, generando un incremento de la minería del cobre en los últimos años. En 1955, la producción anual de la pequeña y mediana minería establece un 73.8% para el primero, mientras que el segundo llega a 26.4% del total. El incremento adicional del oro dependerá de la ampliación de la planta fundicional de Paipote y de la Fundición de la zona central, estimándose un total de 1000 kg anuales. Así para interesar a los productores auríferos en la reiniciación de sus explotaciones, deben establecerse políticas de estabilidad en los precios que permitan afrontar los desembolsos de la instalación de las faenas y la rehabilitación de las minas.

Determinadas facies de rocas carbonatadas pertenecientes a la formación Jumasha superior (Cretácico medio), son susceptibles a albergar mineralización económica de Ag-(Mn-Pb-Zn) al ser intersectadas por estructuras NE-SW que canalizan fluidos mineralizantes. Esto ocurre en Yumpag donde se ha definido un “horizonte prospectivo” de 60 a 100 m de calizas esencialmente limpias, con textura packstone a grainstone y fauna de foraminíferos que, al ser atravesada por una estructura de dirección N60 denominada Camila, ha permitido la formación de cuerpos mineralizados continuos en una longitud mayor a 1300 m.

Underground or surface mining is only the first stage in the ore mining process. Once the ore is mined, it is transported to the surface for further processing. Generally, this is done to extract the particular metal or other component of the ore that has commercial value in its purified form. In its raw state, there are typically between 4 and 7 g/t (0.12 and 0.2 oz/st) of valuable material from rock mined. Once on the surface, the ore is crushed and milled in order to obtain smaller rock particles and to expose the minerals that contain the desired metal or component. Mixing the milled ore with water, a process known as ?froth flotation,? can be employed. This technique consists of a series of tanks, or ?cells? through which the process liquid flows. To obtain the maximum recovery, the milling and flotation process will often be repeated a second time. An increase between 100 and 1,000 g/t (2.9 and 29 oz/st) of rock following this stage of the process is typical. Efficient recovery is key to maintaining a profitable mining operation. The measurement and control of the froth flotation process is vital.

PHYSICAL AND CLIMATIC DIVISIONS. PERU is divided into three regions-the coast, the sierra, or high mountainous region, and the a montana," or forest region of the Amazon basin. The Coast.-The coast is an arid region. No rain falls excepting in the extreme northern part, which borders the Gulf of Guayaquil. There is, however, a slight precipitation in the form of mist (garua), which occurs on the coast hills during the so-called winter months. The aridity of the coast is due principally to the antarctic or Humboldt ocean-current, which, being cold and having a temperature lower than that of the land, absorbs rather than produces vapors. The coast mists occur during the season when the land is relatively cold. Near the Gulf of Guayaquil the antarctic current diverges from the coast, so that in the Tumbes valley and adjacent country the conditions in the summer months are such as produce rains. In the remaining valleys of the coast, agriculture is made possible only by means of irrigation, and is accordingly very limited in extent, although rich and varied. In the northern and south-central portions of the coast, plains extend inland from the sea, while in the southern part there is a coastal plain separated from the Pacific by a range of coast hills. Between the northern and south-central plains, as well as between the south-central and southern, the foothills of the sierra descend to the seacoast. The Sierra.-The sierra embraces the high land dominated by the lofty cordilleras of the Andes. In the southern part of Peru there are two cordilleras, the western and the eastern, which enter from Chile and Bolivia respectively, and inclose between them the Titicaca Lake basin. Keywords: drying, steam drying, concentrates, copper, lead During the past twenty years steam drying has become a prominent technology for drying of non-ferrous metals concentrate. This is mainly because of its low energy consumption and very low emissions. The first applications of significant capacity were stationary steam dryers, which however, faced severe challenges in maintenance costs and availability. That technology was soon replaced by Kumera?s rotary steam drying technology, which has been the dominant technology in new dryer installations world-wide for the past ten years, ever since the first installation in Hamburg in 1999. There are ten Kumera steam dryers in operation today and five more to be commissioned during 2011. Practically every dryer is different owing to continuous development, new innovations and operational experience with continuous feedback from the operators. Most significant improvements relate to capacity increase with the Kumera steam-dryer family, new feeder systems at the wet end, a completely new design of the dry material discharge with increased availability, heating element design and material selection, and control systems. This paper discusses the modifications and improvements introduced which have enabled the Kumera steam dryer to become the global leader in new dryer installations.

A cal e a fluorita são os principais componentes das escórias dessulfurantes. Entretanto, a busca por tecnologias consideradas menos poluentes vem tomando espaço neste setor. Dessa maneira, a necessidade de desenvolvimento dos processos faz com que as usinas siderúrgicas busquem melhorias no processo. Neste contexto, este trabalho tem como objetivo realizar um estudo de substituição da cal convencional por resíduo de mármore e também da fluorita por aluminato de cálcio. Os ensaios foram realizados a 1.600°C e as amostras foram retiradas periodicamente durante 25 minutos afim de se avaliar a dessulfuração ocorrida no metal. Os resultados indicam a viabilidade da utilização do resíduo e do aluminato de cálcio em escórias dessulfurantes para aço.

La baja de precios en algunos minerales ha obiligado que las empresas mejoren su proceso productivo a través del uso de equipos de última tecnología en los procesos de mecánica, hidráulica, electricidad y electrónica, así como en la eficiencia en el corte y taladrado, extracción y transporte. Sin embargo, tanto el desatado y sostenimiento manual desarrollaron un estréss y desgaste de energía en el trabajador. En este sentido, el presente trabajo señala una nueva forma de realizar tales operaciones en el ciclo de minado de la empresa Milpo a fin de garantizar la seguridad física de los trabajadores y equipos.

Desde 1995 la planta de Lixiviación de Toquepala desarrolló un sistema de control automático para los procesos de extracción por solventes y electrodepositación. Sin embargo, con el desarrollo de la tecnología y las nuevas versiones de control, dicha plataforma se tornó arcaica. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la modernización de los sistemas relacionados con el control y supervisión de las áreas de extracción por solventes, depositación electrolítica y áreas auxiliares. Como consecuencia de ello, se incrementó la operatividad, disponibilidad y fiabilidad con cero paradas por perturbaciones eléctricas, así como redujo el tiempo utilizado para el diagnóstico y solución de problemas.
