El Proyecto de Au-Ag-Cu de Chanape se ubica en la prolífica franja metalogénica del Mioceno. En Chanape afloran rocas intrusivas (p.ej., cuarzo diorita porfirítica, pórfido de cuarzo-monzodiorita, etc) que cortan las formaciones Millotingo y Pacococha, de edad terciaria. Estas formaciones alojan “pipes” de brecha de turmalina con contenido de Au-Ag-Cu, vetas polimetálicas de Ag-Au-(Zn-Pb-Cu), mantos de reemplazamiento y brechas freáticas y freato-magmáticas mineralizadas. En las brechas de cuarzo-turmalina se ha reconocido un clásico zonamiento vertical incluyendo Cu-Ag-Mo-Au en la base, una porción intermedia de Au-Ag-Cu-Mo y una parte alta de Au-Ag-Cu-Zn-Pb.

Previous laboratory and field experimentation has demonstrated the effect of several variables on drilling rate.1-5 These results have been incorporated into optimization theories6-" for the purpose of reducing drilling cost. Minimum-cost drilling theories rely on a combination of historical data and empirical prediction techniques for selecting optimum bit weight and rotary speed. Past solutions have required extensive use of computing equipment because of both the complexity of the mathematical formulations and the large number of parameters involved. Field attempts to apply these computed results have frequently failed because of the uncertainty of input data requirements. Humble has developed an on-site computer system to control bit weight and rotary speed and thereby implement the concepts of minimum-cost drilling. This system can (1) perform short interval drilling rate tests for formation evaluation, (2) use the results of these tests as input information to solve minimum-cost drilling formulas, and (3) control bit weight and rotary speed in accordance with these computed solutions. The purpose of this paper is to describe the computer control system and present results of initial field testing. Theoretical Considerations Minimum-cost drilling (MCD) requires a quantitative evaluation of the variables involved. Several forms of a basic mathematical model have been sug-gested.'?,' "he relationships reported here form the basis for the solution programmed in this work. Four equations are used, expressing drilling rate, bit bearing wear, bit tooth wear, and cost. A solution for minimum-cost drilling assuming constant bit weight and rotary speed over the entire bit life has been programmed for use in computing MCD schedules. This solution is subject to certain limiting assumptions such as those discussed by Graham et a1.I2: 1. Drilling cost is the summation of bit cost, rotating cost, connection cost and hoisting cost. 2. Diamond bits are excluded. 3. Bit life is limited by either bearing failure or tooth wear, or by a combination of operational factors that make it cheaper to pull an incompletely consumed bit. 4. Circulating hydraulics are adequate and do not limit drilling rate. 5. Bit weight considerations exclude hole deviation. 6. Drilling rate is a function of only bit weight, rotary speed, and degree of tooth dullness; that is, the effects of pressure, lithology, fluid properties hydraulics and drill string dynamics are ignored. The C.S.I.R.O. acid alumina process employs the essential steps of digestion, hydrolysis and calcination to produce pure alumina from ores too high in silica or too low in grade for the Bayer process. The two latter stages have been described in some detail previously but the digestion stage requires separate discussion since ores vary widely in composition and reactivity. Kaolinitic clays require roasting to 800°C to render the alumina soluble in the 11 per cent sulphuric acid used in the process while some ferruginous laterites require roasting to reduce the reactivity of iron minerals.The iron content of pregnant solutions is kept at a low figure by digesting at temperatures where the solubilities of ferric oxide or basic ferric sulphates are small. A two-stage, counter-current digestion is necessary to extract a high percentage of alumina from the ores and to produce a basic pregnant liquor with an SO3 : AI 203 ratio of 1'\1 suitable for high temperature hydrolysis. The second stage of digestion, called the modification stage, treats slightly acid liquors with excess of ore in the temperature range 1200-1400C.The first stage operates at 170°-1900C to extract further alumina from modification residues, using recycled acid obtained from later steps of the process. Both temperature ranges are critical for economic operation and for proper control of the iron content of solutions. In batch experiments, 30 min is regarded as a suitable retention time for digestion and modification; ores which require much longer than this are less suitable for the process. Impurities such as silica, and titanium and vanadium oxides are discarded in the residue along with iron oxide, and do not contaminate the final product. Bivalent metallic sulphates such as MgSO4, can build up in the circuit to a very considerable degree without affecting product purity.Comparison with other processes shows that the C.S.I.R.O. process is superior for control of contamination by iron, which is the major problem in acid processes. The pure intermediate product (3Al203.4S03.9H20) is also more convenient for calcination to alumina than the hydrated aluminium sulphate usually recovered in other processes. Detailed cost comparisons must await pilot-plant evaluation of the C.S.LR.O process.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, Namakwa Sands, ilmenite, DC arc furnace, titania slag, pig iron Namakwa Sands is a heavy minerals mining and beneficiation business in the Anglo Base Metals Division, and operates along the West Coast of South Africa. The business encompasses mining, mineral concentration, separation, and smelting operations. The smelting process comprises the carbonaceous reduction of ilmenite to produce titania slag with a TiO2 content of 86%, and iron with a carbon content of 2.5%. The Namakwa Sands smelter, situated near the Saldanha Bay harbour, commenced smelting operations in 1994, when a 25 MW DC arc furnace was commissioned. The smelting operations were expanded in 1999, with the commissioning of a second 35 MW DC arc furnace. Despite the fact that ilmenite smelting poses a technical challenge in terms of the high temperatures required, the physical characteristics of the slag, the constraints placed on the feedstock, and the tight product specifications, Namakwa Sands has continually increased slag production since 1995. High furnace feed-on utilisation and furnace stability, complemented by continuous improvement drives, will be the vehicle to drive performance in the short term, with longer-term performance enhancements due to strategic process development.

El presente trabajo describe la aplicación del método de corte y relleno descendente mecanizado y el método de almacenamiento provisional en la mina Santa Bárbara, ubicada en Cerro de Pasco. Para el primer método, son mayores e intedependientes las operaciones unitarias, limitando la producción y generando mayores costos en el relleno chancado. Mientras que el segundo método, es aplicable en los cuerpos "Vasconia" y "Manuel", siempre que cumpla con tres condiciones principales que hacen posible su efectividad en la mina: la primera, señala que la explotación se realice en los pisos superiores y luego, en los inferiores; la segunda, refiere que la explotación son mayores las se haga en retirada y la tercera indica que el espacio no debe ser rellenado. En este sentido, el método de almacenamiento provisional resulta ser el más idóneo para la explotación de cuerpos irregulares en la mina Santa Bárbara puesto que su capacidad al término del acarreo de mineral es ilimitada.

Approximately 75 percentage of the earth's land surface is comprised of shale or shale-like materials. Shale itself is composed of the residue from an almost infinite variety of weathered parent materials which have undergone deformations ranging from intense to negligible. Under standard test procedures, shales exhibit a very wide range of physical properties particularly if the test specimen is subjected to a change in moisture content, when the original test values may vary from 0 to 100 percentage. It is this wide variation in physical property values compounded by its ubiquitous presence that makes shale such a problem material to engineers. In reviewing the literature relating to shale, it is evident that the "problem" has been approached from many directions. In order to understand why shales behave as they do, investigators have sought mineralogical, geological, chemical, electrical, and physical answers. Each study yields valuable academic information, but few contribute much of value to the engineer in the field. Many valid relationships between shale strength or competency and clay type, clay content, organic content, water content, grain size, cementation, density, porosity, etc, have been established. Yet it is very difficult to extend these understandings to the in situ condition with results that can be used by the field engineer. One major reason earlier work has not produced better information lies in the ambiguity of the definition of shale. It is apparent that no one laboratory parameter can be successfully used to provide sufficient engineering information to properly describe in situ conditions. For example; shale with swelling clays will produce low strength values provided: the swelling clay is in sufficient quantity, the clay is dispersed throughout the medium involved, and there is a low value of cementation. Shales with high unconfined compressive strengths have been found with very low shear strengths. Sandy shales often provide as many ground control problems as clay shales. Shales of similar nature may provide good roof conditions in one part of a mine yet in another part of the same mine the apparently identical shale may cause substantial problems. A clear need exists to classify shale in a manner which will enable the engineer to better predict the strength and durability of shale-like materials. Studies at the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR) have focused on finding parameters which influence durability and competency, while being discretely discernible through uncomplicated testing. Initial research concentrated on distinguishing shale8 on the basis of standard physical tests such as: unconfirmed compression, triaxial shear, and slake durability. As results accumulated, however, it became evident that moisture content played a much greater role in determining competency than had been recognized previously. As a result the focus of the research turned to developing tests which would evaluate the influence of moisture on shale behavior. The above work then became a foundation for a second phase of investigation in which a suite of standardized tests were developed to provide a classification procedure. From this study five tests were identified as being critical: Moisture Activity, Atterberg Limits, Submersion, Unconfined Compression, and Shore Hardness.

Geologically simple deposits can be modeled quickly and easily with inexpensive gridding and mapping software. Hundreds of mines around the world use RockWorks99 and Surfer 7 for generating contour maps, producing log plots and cross sections, and performing other useful geological calculations. These programs are used by many mining operations as their only modeling and graphical software or they are used in conjunction with larger systems. The investment in learning time is low and the programs produce reasonable quality results with standard computing equipment. RockWorks99 and Surfer 7 provide a good level of capability while maintaining high quality technical integrity. Both programs are used for many applications in mining, oil and gas, environmental and other fields that require analysis of spatial data.

Durante los últimos años, en las operaciones mineras subterráneas surgió la necesidad de contar con diversos mecanismos de control operativo orientados a la mejora de los procesos productivos. Actualmente estos mecanismos tienen muchas dificultades, principalmente en las comunicaciones, debido a la volatilidad de las labores, costos altos de instalación y daños físicos a los medios de comunicación existentes (fibra óptica, cables coaxiales y leaky feeder), lo que dificulta principalmente la extracción de datos de los equipos móviles livianos y pesados. En este trabajo se presenta un nuevo medio de comunicación que se adapta a la volatilidad de las labores mineras, tiene bajo costo de instalación y está exento de sufrir daños físicos en su trayecto, por lo que garantiza una alta disponibilidad y fiabilidad de la transferencia de información del subterráneo hacia los centros de control existentes, donde la información es procesada, a la vez que facilita la aplicación de los mecanismos de control para la optimización de los procesos productivos.

Keywords: metallic material, precursor synthesis, precipitation, nickel, fibrillar powder The composition and morphology of the precursor of fibrillar nanocrystalline nickel powder prepared by oxalate precipitation are characterized by XRD,IR and SEM analysis, and the effects of temperature, nickel concentration, pH, surfactant and drying process on the morphology and the dispersion of the precursor are investigated. By the experiment results, the fibrillar precursor is a complicated nickel salt. The precursor prepared in the of 60~70°C,0.6~0.8 mol/L nickel ion, pH=8.4~8.6 and with addition of PVP surfactant is well dispersive and in fiber form. The powder dried by azeotropic distillation is dispersive.

"A brief review of the Australian mining industry is given followed by a more detailed treatment of a study of the influence of primer Size on explosive performance. This is based on a joint research programme conducted by BHP Central Research Laboratories and Dyno Wesfarmers Ltd and examined the effect of the size of cast primers on the run up and steady state detonation velocitiesof ammonium nitrate based explosives as a function of blasthole diameter. The field trials examined a numter of the Dynamo 'Westfarmers HDF series of primers in conjunction with ANFO, emulsion and watergel explosives. Results indicate that the iun up velocity of 187 mm diameter ANFO charges is negligible using cast primers as small as 150g. However, emulsion and watergel explosives did exhibit run up in both 187 and 3:1mm diameter blastholes, independent of the size of primer. This could last from 7 to 10 blashole diameters"

El presente trabajo revisa el panorama sobre el proceso de clasificación y explotación de los recursos minerales no metálicos en el Perú, con el objeto de promover el desarrollo de la minería no metálica. Los metales de origen mineral se clasifican en cuatro grupos: metales en estado nativo y minerales metálicos, combustibles minerales, aguas subterráneas y un gran número de sustancias minerales que no están comprendidas en ninguna de las categorías mencionadas, y que constituyen el grupo de los no metíllicos, llamados también minerales y rocas industriales. Asimismo, se muestra la clasificación establecida por el código de minería (combustibles minerales, minerales industriales, refractarios, material de construcción y minerales no metálicos diversos). Luego se describe el valor de la producción nacional de minerales no metálicos, como la situación actual de la minería no metálica en el Perú. Concluyendo que el Estado debe priorizar la prospección de minerales no metálicos de acorde a la importancia del desarrollo del país, asi como estimular la iniciativa privada para el descubrimiento de nuevos depósitos de dichas sustancias comercialmente explotables.

Very little has been written about the discovery and early history of prospecting of ironstone deposits in the Iron Knob-Middleback Range area of South Australia, the main source of supply of ironstone (hematite) for the Australian steel industry, and scanty though the record is, much of it is wrong or misleading.With the help of several people, to whom acknowledgement is made at the end of the paper, the writer has unravelled some of the story, but not the whole story. It is hoped that publication of this paper will stimulate interest in others, who may be able to supplement this account from family records, from the files of newspapers, or from archives.

The current study is part of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) on-going subsidence research program. The long-term objective of the DOE program is to develop analytical methods of subsidence prediction applicable over a broad range of geologic and mining conditions encountered in the United States. The DOE currently has several contracts in progress to develop a sound data base that can be used in the development of predictive models. Dames & Moore is currently under contract to the DOE to collect and analyze detailed subsidence and hydrologic data from a coal mine employing longwall mining methods in the Eastern Coal Province. Work under Contract No. DE-AC22-80PC 30335 began in October of 1980 and will continue through September of 1984. This paper summarizes the work that has been completed through September of 1981 and presents the results that have been achieved during this period. Technical difficulties encountered during both the installation and monitoring phases are discussed, and recommendations for future work are presented.

En 1958 se instalaron dos hornos Tysland-Hole en la planta Siderúrgica de Chimbote, construído por Elektrokmisk A.S, cuya sede social se encuentra en Oslo, Noruega. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el funcionamiento de dichas hornos para la reducción de minerales de fierro en Chimbote. Para el revestimiento del horno se emplean materiales aislantes diversos y tres tipos de mezclas refractarias que se colocan mediante apisonado. Asimismo, estas mezclas retractarias son apisonadas contra moldes metálicos que permanecen "insitu", es decir, que reciben la primera carga del horno.

Gippsland has perhaps the most colourful history of exploration of any area in Australia. Hydrocarbons were first discovered in the Gippsland Basin in 1924 when a water well at Lakes Entrance encountered oil and gas shows. In 1942, the Commonwealth and Victorian Governments, in an effort to supplement a wartime oil shortage, sank a shaft near this well and produced 8000 barrels of low gravity oil up to 1956, when the field was abandoned. A total of 64 shallow wells had been drilled in the Lakes Entrance area by that time. Elsewhere in the onshore Gippsland Basin, 30 wells were drilled from 1925 to 1941. In 1960 BHP Ltd was granted an exploration permit covering much of the offshore area of the Gippsland Basin. Esso Australia Ltd joined BHP in 1964 and drilled the Barracouta-1 gas discovery in 1965. Since then over 100 exploration and appraisal wells have been drilled in the basin resulting in the discovery to date of some 3.6 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 8.8 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas (Current remaining recoverable reserves are 906 million barrels of oil and 5.7 TCF of gas). Exploration in the offshore areas is actively continuing today and new discoveries are still being made.

El presente artículo describe la importancia del acero en Estados Unidos de Norteamérica como el más grande productor de acero del mundo. Los principales minerales utilizados son los óxidos de hierro como la hematita, jimonita y magnetita. El mineral de fierro es extraído por el método de tajeo abierto, palas mecánicas separan la cubierta de detritus y cargan el mineral directamente a camiones o carros de ferrocarril. En Alabama y a lo largo de los Montes Apalaches existen depósitos de fierro sedimentario de formación más reciente que los del Lago Superior, produciendo cerca de 6% de la producción total de los Estados Unidos en 1963. Otros tipos de minerales de fierro explotados en los Estados Unidos son las magnetitas de New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania y las magnetitas y hematitas de Missouri, Utah, Wyoming y California.

Good operation of Soderberg electrodes is dependent upon high quality electrode paste coupled with better electrode management procedures. Without having a good electrode operation, it is not possible to obtain the best outcome from the furnace. In other words that is a good way to say how important the proper electrode operation is. Good electrode performance depends on the slipping rate and current levels, which decides the shape of the baking curve at the level of just below the contact clamps. Negative curvature of baking zone in the central part is considered dangerous because shrinkage takes place outwardly creating abnormal stresses in the electrode. Soft breakages occur when the baking zone comes below the clamps and the casing cannot take the current. This paper deals with various factors affecting baking characteristics leading to soft breakages and also presents case studies in a closed 48MVA furnace with smelting for charge chrome. In case studies in a closed furnace, it has happened that the energy for baking at the low current operation before breakage has been lower than the actual slipping has demanded. At low current there should not be problem, but a problem can occur when the current for some period is raised above the current carrying capacity of the casing. So data for electrode operation in actual period was studied and presented in this paper.
