Mineralogy, traditionally associated with concentrator studies, is being increasingly applied to problems in pyrometallurgy. Such investigations commonly make use of a number of techniques, and the results are combined for a meaningful interpretation, which can lead to a successful solution for the problem. Mineralogical techniques are described for various pyrometallurgical operations. Examples are given of studies and investigations involving mineralogy in chemical-looping combustion, feed monitoring to platinum-smelting furnaces, and losses to slag in base metal and platinum smelting.

Determination of the sampling constant and liberation diameter are of importance when applying the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE) equation to optimise sampling protocols. The method for the direct determination of the sampling constant is based on the æGy 50-pieceÆ experiment and variants thereof, which is generally known as the heterogeneity test. In the coarse gold environment, the heterogeneity test is prone to poor repeatability and bias due to the very heterogeneity that it aims to quantify. A key issue is the large sample mass that can be required in the coarse gold environment, which may reach 1 t or more. The heterogeneity test often provides an evaluation of the background gold grade heterogeneity, but understates that of the high-grade coarse-gold component. This is because the total mass of fragments is usually too small to represent the mineralisation. Despite this relatively well-known problem, heterogeneity tests are often undertaken on deposits where the presence of coarse gold is ignored, not fully realised or vastly understated. Sampling types and protocol designs are frequently based on poor quality data that do not match the characteristics of the orebody. For this style of mineralisation, an empirical approach to define ore characteristics is recommended.CITATION:Dominy, S C and Minnitt, R C A, 2012. A1though the expanding Eltran1 configuration has been used in induced polarization exploration for several years, there has been little application of this method to straight resistivity problems. A comparison of results of resistivity exploration by this technique versus those obtained from Wenner configuration surveys reveals a number of advantages in interpretative resolution as well as in field operation. The application of electrical resistivity to ground-water exploration is well known.= In the past a major portion of this work has been accomplished by use of one or more variations of a technique employing the Wenner3 electrode configuration. With the introduction of the frequency domain technique of induced polarization measurements, used primarily in the exploration for disseminated sulfide deposits, there arose the need for an electrode configuration by which potentials could be measured externally to the current electrode spread in order to minimize coupling between current sending and potential receiving circuits. It was also deemed desirable that the configuration would provide information laterally along profile as well as with depth. To reach these objectives the expanding dipole-dipole configuration (which probably first was used in the electrical transient method of exploration and from which the name 'Eltran' was derived) has been adapted to induced polarization exploration. As part of a strategic research initiative at UBC to design and evaluate integrated underground mining and mineral processing systems, work has been done to determine how to utilize the coarse rejects of pre-concentration in the underground environment. An amenability study for nine orebodies from four of Xstrata Nickel?s Ontario operations evaluated both processing and waste disposal methods. The utilization of the rejects as a high quality backfill with minimal binder requirements has been identified as the preferred disposal method. Fill mixes utilizing the rejects in combination with classified tailings, full tailings, and cement were developed based on the geotechnical properties of the rejects. The mix designs were examined for both strength and rheological properties. The paper will present the results of the pre-concentration testwork, the design and strength testing of various mix designs for rejects from the nine ores and presents a conceptual design for an underground pre-concentration system based on this test work.

Queensland?s underground coal industry, as a whole, has arguably the best gas monitoring systems in the world. Each mine utilizes real time, tube bundle and onsite ultra fast gas chromatograph systems. Queensland?s mining legislation has specific requirements for mine gas monitoring but there is no requirement for all three techniques. Industry has however identified the need for all three and adopted this as a standard, resulting in over sixty thousand gas results collected each day. Automated monitoring systems are programmed to alarm for gas concentrations, gas ratios and explosibility. These alarms are then used to initiate predetermined actions to take control of the situation and prevent the compromise of safety to workers and the loss of resources. Dedicated software packages have been developed to assist in the interpretation of the large volume of results generated. The real time systems are used for real time warning, essential for incidents such as belt fires. Tube bundle systems suit long term trending used for identification of the onset of spontaneous combustion or for the determination of explosibility during the routine sealing of worked areas. Gas chromatograph analysis is used to provide a complete analysis and provides results for hydrogen and ethylene, key gases used in the assessment of spontaneous combustion. It is also crucial during significant spontaneous combustion events and coal fires to use gas chromatography to determine the explosibility status of the underground atmosphere otherwise the severity of the situation is likely to be under estimated. This paper outlines the need for all three techniques for assessing the underground status and outlines advantages and disadvantages of each.

"Basal till sampling techniques were used to search for gold mineralization in the Timmins, Ontario area. During 1978 and 1979, approximately 90 overburden sampling drill holes were completed in Murphy and Hoyle Townships to test specific geophysically defined target areas. A conventional tricone dual tube drill system, and a unique retractable tricone/rock coring system were used to various advantages.First pass till sampling at 800 to 1200 ft intervals perpendicular to ice transport direction yielded anomalous gold values in till and carbonatized quartz pyrite-rich bedrock chips, and lateritic soil. Subsequent induced polarization-resistivity surveys defined the areal extent of a pyritic carbonate alteration zone. A second pass till sampling/limited rock coring program evaluated the gold mineralization potential of the alteration zone. Diamond drilling has substantiated the till and bedrock gold anomalies. Further evaluation of this mineralization is currently in progress. IntroductionThis paper describes an integrated geochemical/geophysical gold mineralization discovery case history in Hoyle Township. This discovery is on a property jointly owned (I983) by Canamax Resources Inc. and Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Exploration of the property began in 1978 by Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. and in 1979 a joint venture agreement was signed with Du Pont of Canada Exploration Limited. Rosario Resources Canada Ltd. was taken over by Amax Minerals Exploration in 1981, which became Canamax Resources Inc. in 1982.The work described in this paper deals with a gold mineralization discovery located three-quarters of a mile northwest of the gold deposit currently being readied for underground exploration and development. Further drilling is required to investigate the economic potential of the gold mineralization herein described."

Sampling protocols that are designed to suit the mineralisation style will result in a reduction of the nugget effect and hence resource risk. The a priori need for all sampling programs is the effective characterisation of the mineralisation type(s) to support optimisation. This requires a program of sampling for sampling followed by holistic characterisation. At each end of the coarse-gold to fine-gold spectrum, the samplability of a deposit ranges from relatively simple for fine-grained disseminated gold particles, through to extremely difficult for coarse nuggety mineralisation. Many deposits contain a proportion of both particle size types. The proportion and size of coarse gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling, where coarser particles will require larger samples and more specialised protocols. The nature of mineralisation geology/mineralogy and associated gold particle sizing can only be determined by sampling to facilitate optimised protocols. Mineralogical studies, focusing on particle size, particle clustering and distribution in host minerals, are required as part of wider paragenetic and metallurgical investigations. This paper discusses the role of mineralogical studies in the characterisation of gold ores for sampling optimisation through a series of case studies.

La emulsión del tipo agua en aceite, con buen balance de oxigeno y despliega una alta velocidad y presión de detonación. En este sentido, el presente texto señala las ventajas del uso de la emulsión gasificada como agente de voladura seguro -en tanto reacciona con una solución básica que lo sensibiliza químicamente, justo antes de su carguío a los taladros por medio del camión fabrica, así como agiliza las operaciones de voladura y de minado y reduce los costos de voladura.

En ese sentido, el presente texto señala el manejo adecuado de dichas herramientas a través del uso de una base de datos, donde existe una estructura basada en el software (VISUAL FOXPRO, PARADOX, etc) y asi ejecutarla mediante una aplicación gráfica que permita tener una representación de lo estudiado como ocurre en un muestreo geoquímico.

This paper presents a general re-view of the various methods of briquetting coals, with and without the aid of a binder, with special reference to the production of a suitable briquette from Nova Scotia 'fines' for re-blending with industrial coal. From the economic and technical viewpoints, either small stoker-sized briquettes made with about 4 per cent asphalt in standard low-pressure double-roll presses, or briquettes made without binder in high-pressure double-roll presses, appear to be the most reasonable solution at present.

Because of growing pressure from government and consumers to produce more coal, the mining industry must improve existing techniques and devise more efficient mining methods. Mining of the thicker, shallower and geologically superior coal seams in the western United States is being subjected to increasing pressure from environmentalists; and so in order to meet the demand, the coal industry is exhausting the more accessible surface seams and beginning to mine seam of over 1,000 feet in depth and less than. 30 inches in thickness. The longwall mining system is the natural choice for extracting deep and thin coal seams, as it operates almost independently of the overburden rock stress. Due to the added fact that longwall mining is an inherently more productive method than room and pillar mining, many coal producers are looking to it as a means of increasing productivity without a corresponding cost increase. The consistent rise in application of longwall mining in the United States in the last decade illustrates the excellent potential of this technique for the future. American mining conditions are geologically different from those in Europe where longwall mining has been highly developed and extremely successful. Although numerous successes have been recorded in the U.S. with this mining system, a substantial number of failures have also occurred. These failures are due primarily to roof control problems usually over the face, in the tail entry, or both. Another problem area for American operators contemplating the use of this method has been correct selection of equipment, which should be custom fitted to local mining conditions for optimum productivity. It is essential that correct estimates for chock resistances, support densities, supported and unsupported roof spans, as well as rates of advance and length of working faces be provided to optimize mining conditions. Unless extensive pilot projects are planned engineers must choose their equipment correctly at the outset. A typical investment in longwall equipment will amount to several millions of dollars.

The computer program introduced in this paper is based on design guidelines developed for selection of support systems used in mine roadways. The support types considered include rock bolts as well as rigid and yieldable steel arches. Using the computer program, the design engineer can select the type, pattern and specifications of the support systems suitable for various roof conditions. One of the biggest challenges for the mining industry is, quite literally, how to the keep the equipment rolling. There is a limited amount of companies that manufacture the 4.2-m- (14-ft-) tall, 5,670-kg (12,500-lb-) tires needed for the haul trucks that are approaching the 362 t (400 st) pay-load class, such as Terex?s MT6300-AC and Caterpillar?s 797F. And, while these might be the most impressive tires, they are not the only ones that are in short supply. The shortage of tires has affected just about every kind of machine, and the demand for those tires has been extremely high for more than five years with no end to the shortage in site.
