"Poor Pb-Zn selectivity during Pb flotation in laboratory tests on a Mississippi Valley-type Pb-Zn ore was traced to apH effect. In the pH range, 9.5 to 11.0 sphalerite floated readily without copper activation. Compared to sphalerite flotation with copper activation this procedure gave equivalent selectivity but reduced flotation rate.Possible mechanisms of this sphalerite flotation without copper activation are discussed. Activation by Fe(OH)2 is suggested, the Fe- + ions being derived from superficial oxidation of pyrite in the ore. IntroductionGalena and sphalerite commonly occur together. A typical procedure, using xanthate collectors, is to float the galena first, at pH - 8, followed by flotation of sphalerite after activation with copper (II) sulphate at pH - 10 (to depress pyrite).Flotation tests following this procedure in an undergraduate laboratory course with a Pb-Zn ore from Polaris failed to achieve consistent selective flotation of galena. Occasionally a considerable amount of sphalerite, even though unactivated with CUSO4, floated. This was traced to accidentally high pH. A systematic study was carried out which revealed that sphalerite floated readily in the pH range 9.5 to 11.0 without activation by CuSO4 This paper describes the results of the study and discusses a possible mechanism of this flotation of sphalerite."

The paper takes the reader into the depths of a modern ultra-deep South African gold mine and gives a perspective on the vertical and horizontal extent of the tunnel networks in such a mine. Depending on the mine design layout employed, tunnels once excavated are subjected to various levels of stress change over their life time, and the support requirements are explained. It is suggested that shotcreting is the only viable ultra-deep level support medium, and after looking at the latest developments, the logistical problems are put forward. In an effort to overcome most of these problems, the South African ultra-deep mining industry embarked on a collaborative research programme in 1998. The importance of tunnelling and in particular tunnel support as a critical technology for future successful ultra-deep level mining is stressed. While not yet fully ?on top of? these problems and challenges, our industry is now fully addressing them and we expect to make significant progress during the next 4 to 5 years.

Cost estimates and technical feasibility are compared for six chemical coal cleaning technologies. The comparison is based on conceptual application of the chemical cleaning methods for removal of pyritic and organic sulfur from a utility grade bituminous coal. The process layout includes receipt of 8,000 tpd ROM coal, fine coal pulverizing, desulfurization, and preparation of a compacted clean coal suitable for storage and shipment. The methods are: the Magnex iron pentacarbonyl process, the KVB dry oxidation process, the Battelle hydrothermal caustic leaching precess, the TRW Meyers ferric ion leaching process, the Ledgemont oxygen/water leaching process, and the Bureau of Mines/Energy Research and Development Administration air/water leaching process. Capital costs estimated for the desulfurization operation alone, scaled to 8,000 tpd, range between $14 MM and $122 MM, while estimated operating costs for desulfurization alone on the same scale of operation range between $7 and $17 per ton clean coal produced. Relatively little is known about the chemical cleaning of coal, and present cost estimates indicate that the method might not be competitive at its present state of development when used alone to clean utility grade coals for sulfur removal. The principal attractiveness of chemical coal cleaning lies in its potential for combination with physical cleaning to produce cost competitive compliance coals in a combined process with high-Btu yields.

"The measured strength of an explosive depends to a certain extent on which it is determined. An earlier investigation showed the relative propulsive strength of dynamites as determined in one type of apparatus, ballistic pendulum.4 The aim of this paper is to precept strength data on these same dynamites determined in another type of apparatus, the Trauzl lead block, and to compare the results with those of the ballistic pendulum. Trauzl lead block have been in use many years for the determination of thy strength of explosives, under moderate confinement.5 The common practice is to shoot 10 grams of explosive, in tinfoil wrapper,- and then to measure the volume of the cavity produced by the shot. The volume of the original borehole is deducted from the gross expansion and sometimes a correction is made for the expansion produced by the detonator. Dry sand is used for stemming the charge.It has been found that the expansion in Trauzl blocks is not strictly proportional to the charge. Naoum5 believed that for scientific accuracy the charge should undoubtedly be regulated to give the same average expansion for each sample tested, but for expansions of 200 to 400 cubic, centimeters the deviation from proportionality is not sufficient to give results appreciably in error.Neubner7 found that the proportionality curve is tangent to the charge-expansion curve at about 300 cubic centimeters expansion, provided that no deductions are made for the volume of the original borehole or the effect of the detonator; the total or gross expansion is proportional to the charge between expansions of 250 to 350 cubic centimeters without serious error."

"Fine mineral particles are difficult to process by flotation because of their low collision efficiencies with air bubbles. Decreasing air bubble size and increasing mineral particle size through flocculation are the most common approaches to improve flotation efficiencies. Herein we demonstrate that nanoparticle flotation collectors can be engineered to selectively induce fine mineral particle aggregation and promote flotation.Flotation tests of clean fine pentlandite (Pn) and Clarabelle Mill (CBM) rock tails and pyrrhotite (Po) tails that contained significant amount of fine pentlandite have confirmed that the nanoparticles can serve as both collectors and selective flocculants for fine pentlandite. In the case of clean fine Pn, the nanoparticle collectors virtually can float almost all Pn fines. Scoping tests on CBM tails have shown significant improvement in nickel recovery. Addition of nanoparticles as a flotation aid can recover 20% of the nickel contained in the rock tails and 40% of the Pn contained in the Po tails compared to current mill operations giving 0% nickel recovery from rock tails and no Pn selectivity from Po tails. Ongoing work includes attempts to identify optimal strategies for employing nanoparticles in fines flotation.IntroductionFine particle flotation is an industry-wide challenge in mineral processing. Fine mineral particles are difficult to process by flotation because fine particles have low mass and thus low momentum, which results in their low collision efficiency with air bubbles (Dai, Fornasiero, & Ralston, 1999). In addition, fine particles have not only high specific surface area but also more active surface area, which causes high reagent consumption. For base metal sulphide minerals, particle size between 10 µm and 70 µm is a typical range where high flotation recoveries can be achieved with conventional flotation chemistry and acceptable cell residence times. For pentlandite, the flotation recoveries decrease sharply when the particle size is below 10 µm and hydraulic entrainment is the dominant mechanism, giving recoveries proportional to water recovery and no Pn enrichment. This paper describes studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines to achieve its goal of developing methods for increased recovery and utilization of valuable constituents in a wide variety of domestic and industrial wastes, In this particular study, 36 units of obsolete electronic equipment from military aircraft were disassembled into their modular components by hand to determine materials distribution. Further modular disassembly into individual parts was used to identify metal composition. After identifying the metals in some of the more difficult to dismantle modules, similar modules were grouped together, shredded, mechanically separated, and using metal composition data from hand separation, classified along with the hand-separated materials. Although this equipment is normally classified as law-value iron-bearing aluminum, data were obtained that indicated the potential for moderately higher value classification. The electronic units were classified as to precious metals, copper, iron, and aluminum contents, and scrap values were estimated.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the relationship of bituminous coal seam parameters and the amount of airborne respirable dust generated at longwalls. Dust and coal samples were obtained from 20 longwalls operating in geographically representative coalfields throughout the United States. Statistical analyses of coal seam parameters and airborne respirable dust measurements indicate a likely causal relationship between seam type and respirable dust. Low-ash, high-volatile coal seams were associated with higher airborne respirable dust levels. A negative linear correlation (significant at the 95-pct confidence level) was observed between the seam's ash content and airborne respirable dust, explaining up to 18 pct (R2 = 0.18) of headgate dust level variation and up to 15 pct of tailgate dust level variation. Volatile matter was found to have a positive linear correlation with tailgate dust level, explaining 16 pct of the variation. Further data examination indicates that these relationships with dust are most likely nonlinear, because of improved R2 values over the linear correlations. However, a notable portion of longwall dust production is influenced by other operational parameters, so additional research under more controlled conditions is needed to determine the seam's causative functions.

The development and operation of "combination wells"5/ have created new and unusual problems, many of which can he solved only if information is available concerning the properties of the fluids produced. Data as to the characteristics of the fluids at the relatively high pressures that exist in the reservoirs are especially important, and there is growing economic concern to know what part, if any, of the liquid recovered at the surface was liquid in the reservoir, As an extension of this problem, it is important to know, whether liquid will be formed in the reservoir as a result of isothermal retrograde condensation when the reservoir pressure is reduced. The pressure range of such condensation, if it occurs, is significant in the design of gas-recycling plants for maintaining reservoir pressures. In connection with the operation of such plants, it is particularly important to know how pressure and temperature will affect the yield of the liquid phase and the composition of the gas to be returned to the reservoir. It has not been possible to predict the behavior of these fluids that have high ratios off gas to liquid by comparing them with the behavior of low gas-liquid ratio fluids at identical pressures and temperatures. Such comparison fails because the proportions in which a component will be distributed between the phases of a system at any given temperature and pressure depend increasingly on the composition of the mixture as the critical temperature and. pressure of the system are approached. Because many combination wells are producing from reservoirs that have temperatures near the critical point, experimental date on the properties of the Fluids under reservoir conditions are particularly important at this time, To meet the immediate requirements of the industry for such experimental information, an equilibrium cell has been constructed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Bartlesville, Okla. When adequate experimental date have been accumulated, it may be possible to make dependable estimates of the phase relations for high gas-liquid ratio fluids at the pressures anti temperatures characteristic of "combination-well? reservoirs.

The size by size batch flotation behaviour of copper activated sphalerite from synthetic mixtures with quartz was determined. In terms of recovery of sphalerite, the size fractions could be grouped into coarse, intermediate, and fine ranges. The behaviour of the coarse and fine ranges was significantly poorer than that of the intermediate range in both the extent and rate of flotation.Each size fraction had a fast and a slow floating component.The main effect of changing the copper sulphate addition was to alter the proportion of any size fraction which was fast floating. No correlation could be found, between the amount of copper on the spha:lerite andeither the flotation rate of the mineral or the amount of copper added to the system. It was found that fine particles did not appear to consume greatly disproportionate amounts of copper sulphate during conditioning. A modified conditioning procedure was found to lead to a higher rate of flotation and recovery of coarse sphalerite and to make poss1ble substantial savings of copper sulphate.

"Falconbridge Copper's Lac Shortt gold mine is located in northern Quebec approximately 300 km northeast of Val D'Or and 100 km west of Chibougamau (Pig. 1). Engineering for the mill commenced in early 1983 with a feasibility study. The plant was commissioned in the fall of 1984 at a capital cost of approximately $12 million. Design capacity was 750 tpd which was increased in the fall of 1985 to the current level of 1200 tpd.The ore at Lac Shortt is free milling, grading an average of 5.5 g/t gold which is finely disseminated throughout the host rock. Pyrite at 3 to 5% by volume and traces of copper mineralization are also present.Some of the latest gold processing techniques known at the time of design were incorporated into the mill. These include carbon-in-pulp, pressure stripping, electrowinning of pregnant solution and induction furnace refining. The plant also features several innovations such as a unique interstage carbon retention screen in the CIP circuit and the outdoor location of the cyanidation feed thickener, mill solution tank and reagent storage silos despite -40° Celsius winter temperatures.This paper describes the current mill process and discusses some of the problems encountered during the first two years of the plant's operation. CRUSHINGThe Lac Shortt surface crushing facilities are located in a separate building, isolated from the wet processing circuits for dust and noise control reasons. The crushing plant equipment was originally utilized at the Manibridge operation in northern Manitoba where it had been designed to operate at 135 tph. However, at Lac Shortt a rate of only 80 tph has been achievable to date, mainly due to the hardness and frequently slabby breakage characteristics of the ore. Therefore, in order to meet fine ore requirements at the current mill throughput of 1200 tpd, the crushing circuit is run seven days a week. 24 hours a day. Availability has been averaging 65%."

This Bureau of Mines publication comprises 19 tables of data concerning domestic barite production and consumption, imports, and world production for the years 1880 to 1976. Barite is vital to the petroleum industry, with 90 percent of domestic consumption used in drilling muds. Domestic production has traditionally fallen short of consumption: in 1976, 41 percent of the 2.2 million tons consumed was imported. World production of barite increased from 269,000 tons in 1923 to 5.2 million tons in 1975 but is in danger of falling short of future demand. The compiled data provide a comprehensive base of information.

"In 2007, Noront Resources Inc. discovered the high grade nickel copper PGE deposit in northwestern Ontario in a region now known as the Ring of Fire. Since the initial discovery, Noront has advanced the Eagle¹s Nest Project and in September 2012 released a feasibility study for the development of the Eagle¹s Nest Project. This paper summarizes the results of this recent study and outlines additional work planned in the next stages of project development. INTRODUCTIONThe following paper summarizes the findings of the recently completed feasibility study on Noront Resources Ltd.’s Eagle’s Nest Project. The feasibility study was compiled into a NI 43-101 report by Micon International. This paper is intended to summarize the major technical findings and for complete information, interested parties can find the entire NI 43-101 report at www.norontresources.com or on SEDAR.LOCATIONThe McFaulds Lake project area, which includes the Eagle’s Nest deposit, is located at approximately UTM 5844000 N and 547000 E, and between approximately 52º42’ and 52º50’ N latitude and 86º06’ and 86º24’ W longitude, approximately 250 km west of the community of Attawapiskat on James Bay and 575 km northwest of Timmins. The closest all-season accessible community to the McFaulds Lake project area is Nakina, 300 km to the south, where there is a paved airstrip, in addition to all weather road and railroad access (see Figure 1).The First Nations communities of Webequie and Ogoki/Marten Falls are located 90 km west and 120 km south southeast of McFaulds Lake, respectively. Both communities are served by regularly scheduled air service, primarily from Thunder Bay; both Thunder Bay and Timmins serve as support centres for the James Bay communities and the exploration projects in the area."

This paper supplements a keynote address prepared for the MassMin 2016 conference on mass underground mining methods, including block, panel, inclined and sublevel caving. It advocates for a new cave mining paradigm that takes advantage of a number of new and disruptive technologies or innovations that have evolved over the last 15 years, some of which were initiated by major mining companies such as Codelco. The paper will address the challenges that the industry will be facing in the future as well as possible solutions. As background, the paper summarises the challenges that the industry has faced in the past and how such challenges were addressed. The author acknowledges that given his more than 30 years of experience with Codelco Chile (operations and corporate), aspects of his intelligent mining concept have no doubt been influenced and have matured during his invaluable time with Codelco also as the Head of Technology and Innovation. The Antamina Mine is located in the mountainous region of the Ancash Department of Peru at an elevation of approximately 4200m.The 120 km main access road crosses the headwaters of numerous high-value trout streams and is adjacent to pristine lakes, some of very high ecological and scenic value. In addition, the mine discharges mine water and tailings supernatant to the Antamina and Ayash watersheds. These streams provide the primary water supply for irrigation by local residents and provide excellent fishery habitat. The rock walls and earthen diversions constructed by historic and current indigenous residents of Peru are world-renowned and local residents continue this tradition, passed down from the Inca Civilization, for both agricultural purposes and water distribution. The key elements of sustainable development – economic, environmental and social development have been incorporated into Antamina’s sustainable development program through integration of indigenous knowledge and capabilities into enhanced storm water, erosion reduction and sediment control systems. Examples of incorporating indigenous technologies and knowledge into cost-effective and environmentally sound environmental controls are:(1) placement of rock walls on steep terrain to reduce slope length and erosion, (2) installation of rock walls (porous rock check dams) within elongated sediment ponds to increase detention time, (3) construction of rock-lined ditches to convey clean water (4)use of rock walls, with or without geotextile, to function as a seep berm, and (5) appropriate selection and usage of native Andean species for protection of canals and sediment ponds, and steep slopes.

At the end of the recent war, reports became available from Europe of the use of tungsten-carbide inserts in percussion rockdrill bits. These bits were used with small size rockdrills, so that the only advantage gained from the use of the harder, abrasion resistant, tungsten-carbide appears to have been the greater life of the bit. Larger machines, such as used in Australia in conventional practice, had to be discarded to protect the relatively brittle tungstencarbide inserts and the vulnerable bonding with the bit body.As it had been found in machine shop practice that some grades of tungsten-carbide had been produced with considerably improved toughness, it was decided by Gold Mines of Australia Ltd. that drilling practice with tungstencarbide bits warranted detailed examination under Australian conditions, and that drilling tests should be undertaken at Morning Star (G.M.A.) Mines N.L., for which it acts as General Manager and Consultant.These investigations progressed through three stages:1. Preliminary Investigations and Tests.When the investigations were initiated no commercial bits were available in Australia, and manufacture was commenced with improvised equipment from virtual scratch.
