"The land-pebble district, the larger of the two producing areas of Florida, is situated in Polk County and in the eastern part of Hillsborough County. About 80 per cent at the phosphate rock produced in the United States in recent years has been mined from this area. The phosphate ores, locally termed matrix. are beds of sands and clays containing the phosphate pebbles, considered to be Pliocene in age, derived by marine action from underlying Miocene phosphatic marls, and are covered by practically barren sands and clays that have been deposited more recently. Open-pit mining is practiced; hydraulic mining, which has been intensively developed in this district, is used exclusively for mining the matrix and, by some companies for removing the overburden, although drag-line excavators have become established and are proving economical for stripping operations. From the pits the matrix is pumped to adjacent washing plants for beneficiation. The product of the washers. after drying, enters the world markets as Florida pebble phosphate.In this district recovery of the phosphate pebbles by the washing plants has not been particularly effective in the past. The screening, designed to effect a seperation at about 20 mesh (0.033 inches), has not been well controlled. Washer rejects discarded to the waste dumps have contained appreciable amounts of material analyzing above the minimum commercial grade - 66 per cent B.P.L. (bone phosphate of lime). Such losses of commercial fractions should be considered avoidable, and have been discussed at length in a previous paper.3"

The problems associated with squeezing rock conditions in tunnels are well known and have been extensively investigated in the past. Although squeezing conditions are predominantly found in tunnels developed in weak rock types it has been noted at the No. 6 Shaft of Hartebeestfontein Mine where the host rock consists of hard, brittle quartzites. This paper investigates typical time-dependent deformation mechanisms in the rock at Hartebeestfontein Mine. The paper will focus on observations made in a strike-orientated tunnel that intersected weak quartzite layers, that were sandwiched between two competent quartzite beds. The observed squeezing mechanism is dominated by creep along bedding planes with a soft talcaceous infilling that behaves in a clay-like fashion when saturated in water. Stress-induced deformation processes, some distance into the sidewall of the excavation, force the already fractured periphery of the excavation into the void. A laboratory study of the creep of intact rock and discontinuities collected at this site was conducted to characterize the time-dependent behaviour. The difference in creep rates between the two types of quartzite found at this site is described in the paper. Creep tests performed on the talcaceous infilling material found that its presence allows substantial shear creep along discontinuities. Attempts were also made to simulate the squeezing mechanism observed underground with numerical techniques. Due to the discontinuous nature of the mechanism described above, a viscoplastic displacement discontinuity technique was used as it allowed for the explicit simulation of discontinuity creep. The results of the modelling and how it compared with the observed behaviour are described in the paper. Environmental impact statement The work described in this paper will not cause any new, or contribute to any existing, hazards confronting the environment.

Equipment and techniques were developed with Bureau of Mines facilities for measurement in the laboratory of sonic shear wave velocity in variously shaped rock specimens in a wide range of sizes. A variety of rock types was tested. The shear wave front is produced by electronically excited, piezo-electric ceramic) disk-shaped transducers. Transmitter and receiver are interchangeable. Special equipment components were Bureau produced; other components were commercially available. The equipment permits quick measurement of shear wave velocity on variously shaped specimens with a minimum of specimen preparation. The technique, under favorable conditions, allows for determination of the moment of arrival of the shear wave when it is superimposed on a weak longitudinal wave.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência da potência do laser Yb:vidro a fibra, no que diz respeito a extensão dos efeitos estruturais promovido e a possibilidade de corte de uma chapa de NiTi equiatômica austenítica com evidência de encruamento. Após a tentativa de corte a laser, a caracterização foi realizada através de microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) / espectroscopia de energia dispersiva de Raios X (EDS) e análise de nanoindentação instrumentada. De acordo com os resultados obtidos pode-se observar que nenhum dos parâmetros de corte a laser usados nos 3 cortes distintos foi suficiente para promover o seccionamento da chapa, bem como revelou evidências de recristalização em conjunto a uma significativa oxidação superficial na zona termicamente afetada.

This publication combines a critical review of the literature on the microbiology of coal with an introduction to those areas of microbiology related to studies of coal as a biological material. The attack on coal by microorganisms as yet remains doubtful. Only the low-rank coals contain an indigenous microbial flora, and even these organisms are not peculiar to coal, but are common soil and water forms. No experimental data have as yet been presented, either in the literature or in the present work, which unequivocally demonstrate the oxidation of coal by microorganisms. Reasons for the resistance of coal to such attack, including insolubility, physicochemical structure, steric hindrance of enzyme action, and the presence of antibiotic materials in coal are discussed. Microorganisms do attack large aromatic molecules and the mode of oxidation of aromatic ring systems by bacteria is presented. Well-defined pathways are known for the oxidation of polycyclic compounds with one to three rings, and these paths with their key intermediates are described and related to the possible oxidation of coal.

Stability condition of underground excavations have to be assessed to guarantee safe operations within the quarrying working areas. This objective requires a reliable assessment of the rock mass natural state of stress and of the stress redistribution induced by the excavations. This goal is often complicated by difficult geological conditions induced by tectonic stresses, complex topographies and large and irregular excavation geometries. Consequently, the acting state of stress needs to be measured by specific in situ measurement devices. This work refers on an in situ measurements campaign carried out by CSIRO tests in an underground quarry located in the Carrara marble basin. The difficult path carried out for interpretation of the measurements is described in this paper. In particular, the numerical modeling performed using the Boundary Element Method (BEM) first, to study the influence of both surface topography and excavation geometry and then the Distinct Element Method (DEM) to evaluate the influence of rock discontinuities in the measurement zone are illustrated in this work. Parametrical analysis of the rock mass mechanical features is also described in order to calibrate the numerical models and analyze the experimental results. The work has been carried out trough several phases, which are: characterization of the rock mass through geostructural surveys: this allowed us to classify the rock mass and determine the mechanical and physical parameters necessary for modeling; on-site measurement of stress levels through the application of over coring techniques; numerical analyses for the simulation of excavation phases, using the Examine3D (BEM) engineering analysis code. comparison between the measured stress levels and those numerically calculated and subsequent calibration of the BEM model; Numerical model of the forecasted excavation based on the calibrated (BEM) model.

O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a reação de dessulfuração, envolvidas no processo de pré-tratamento de ferro-gusa. A princípio, as misturas utilizadas foram caracterizadas e estudadas através do software de termodinâmica computacional (FactSage 7.1). Em seguida, os resultados obtidos através do estudo termodinâmico computacional foram comparados com aqueles obtidos mediante os testes experimentais a 1400°C. As misturas dessulfurantes tiveram como base a CaO com três tipos de fundentes, fluorita, sodalita e barrilha, além da utilização de alumínio como elemento desoxidante. Os testes experimentais permitiram identificar que a adição de 0,1% em massa de alumínio no gusa, eleva a taxa de remoção de enxofre principalmente no instantes iniciais do processo. Com a utilização da termodinâmica computacional pode-se mostrar que a reação de dessulfuração no ferro-gusa é exotérmica para os teores de silício encontrados no processo. Além disso, a termodinâmica computacional também contribui, em alguns casos, para a análise de compostos sólidos que podem se formar na escória e limitar as reações de dessulfuração.

The financing of large mining projects in developing countries is often achieved, at least in part, by limited-recourse financing methods. Financing agreements are affected by the basic accord that is struck between the host government and the sponsors of the project. It is concluded that governments and project sponsors should take into account the requirements of lenders when structuring such mineral development agreements to maximise the potential for attracting project financing. Lenders are likely to be most interested in aspects such as fiscal arrangements, calculation of taxable income and general accounting rules, royalties, transferability of payments/dividends overseas, corporate structure and control, staged development, financing, loan support and state guarantees/approvals, political risk, provisions for default, product marketing, settlement of disputes and environmental issues

Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling is used to research the complex flow structures that exist in a hydrocyclone. By simulation of a two phase (water and air) flow system, the internal flow and multiphase interactions are investigated. The suitability of CFD modelling as a design tool is further evaluated by examining the effect of varying device dimensions. Three hydrocyclone geometries, used in previous studies, are specified. A transient simulation approach, which employs the Reynolds Stress Model as turbulence model and the Volume of Fluid model as multiphase model, is followed. Aços com teor de Mn entre 15% e 30% apresentam ductilidade excepcionalmente alta para sua elevada resistência mecânica, devido à ocorrência de transformação de fases (efeito TRIP) e/ou à formação de maclas de deformação (efeito TWIP) na microestrutura predominantemente austenítica. A adição de Mn ajuda a manter a austenita até a temperatura ambiente, evitando a sua decomposição após o recozimento aplicado depois da laminação a frio. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar o efeito da temperatura de recozimento na microestrutura e nos valores de propriedades mecânicas de um aço com 17% de Mn, por meio de simulações piloto das etapas de processamento industrial utilizando dilatômetro e simulador termomecânico do Centro de Pesquisa da Usiminas. Observou-se que o aumento na temperatura de encharque durante o ciclo térmico de recozimento contínuo promoveu a reversão completa da martensita a’ para austenita. Além disso, a alteração desse parâmetro praticamente não afetou o limite de resistência e o alongamento total do aço, embora tenha reduzido significativamente o limite de escoamento.

Quartz is one of the main raw materials for the carbothermic production of ferrosilicon and silicon metal. The ideal process is written: SiO2 + 2C = Si + 2CO The real process is much more complicated, depending on the quality of the raw materials. Several research projects have been carried out on quartz for the (Fe)Si process during the last 50-60 years. One of the important properties that have been discussed in this review is the volume expansion that takes place between 850 °C to 1000 ºC and explosive disintegration for some quartz types. No final and definite conclusions have been made but several reasons have been mentioned: The influence of the phase transformation to tridymite, which takes place within the same temperature interval, has been discussed in several papers. Alkali impurities have been mentioned as a critical factor for this transformation to take place. Other researchers have mentioned mica impurities as a critical factor for the behavior of the quartz at these temperatures. Studies of fluid inclusions in quartz was reported in some papers focusing on the volume expansion of these during heating as a source of explosive disintegration, especially along planes of healed micro fractures that often contain vast numbers of such inclusions. Several methods for investigations of the important properties of quartz have been presented and these provide a good basis for the further research on quartz raw materials.

Este artigo tem como objetivo demonstrar os ganhos obtidos com automatizações de atividades de suprimentos de média complexidade e alto tempo de execução. Para atingir o resultado sem investimento, foram desenvolvidas automatizações através de programação em Visual Basic (VBA) e Scripts SAP, utilizando como plataforma o Microsoft Excel. A integração do Excel com o SAP se mostrou eficaz, possibilitando a execução de tarefas de forma automatizada em massa, aumentando a confiabilidade das informações e reduzindo o tempo total de execução das atividades em 67%.

Nesse trabalho é proposto uma investigação das propriedades eletrônicas de junções moleculares de Nanofitas ZigueZague de Grafeno (NZZG) e Phagrafeno (NZZPG) por meio da Teoria: 1- DFT/B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) para otimizar a geometria das moléculas; 2- DFT/LDA.PZ/DZP sobre a célula unitária da rede cristalina para obter as propriedades eletrônicas; 3- Teoria de Hückel Estendido/Função de Green de Não Equilíbrio (THE/FGNE) através da fórmula de Landauer-Buttiker para a região central acoplada entre 2 eletrodos. Nossos resultados exibem: (i) comportamento condutor e singularidades de Van-Hove; (ii) uma região não linear com característica de um dispositivo usual TEC para NZZG; (iii) duas regiões não lineares (RDNs) mostrando característica de um diodo túnel com 2 janelas de operação para NZZPG. Essas regiões não lineares de voltagem coincidem com os Vmin nas curvas Fowler-Nordheim (FN) e Lauritsen-Millikan (LM).

Since the commissioning of the Tati Hydrometallurgical Demonstration Plant (HDP), which produces Ni and Cu cathodes as well as Co salt from sulphide concentrate employing Activox® technology for leaching, no kinetic data has been generated from the plant under normal operating conditions, from start-up to steady state. Therefore, this study seeks to determine the rate of reactions in the leaching circuit with a view to obtaining kinetic data for the system under the current operating conditions. Within the five-compartment autoclave operating at temperatures of 105°C to 110°C and 1100 kPa pressure, the extraction of Ni, Cu, and Co ions into solution is achieved through the oxidation of the sulphide concentrate using approximately 50 kg H2SO4 per ton, 10 kg NaCl per ton, and 1.21 kg O2 per kilogram of S2-. The autoclave reactions showed complex kinetics, with the reactions proceeding via some intermediate(s) before the formation of products. The results suggest that the reactions were dependent on the size of the metal ion of interest and the concentrations of the metal ions in the Tati concentrate as well as in chloride leaching. The order of the leaching rate constants was Fe2+ > Cu2+ > Ni2+ > Co2+ in all the compartments studied. The rates of leaching were also found to decrease as the concentrate moves from compartment 1 to compartment 4. For compartments 1 to 3, leaching was observed to be preceded by dilution of the repulp liquor (copper raffinate). The leaching rate for compartment 5 was slightly lower than that of compartment 1 but higher than the rates of compartments 2, 3, and 4 for all the metals studied. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo contribuir para a preservação refratária de baterias de coque, apresentando uma metodologia de planejamento e controle. A condição dos refratários de baterias de coque é crucial para sua produtividade e para o cumprimento de diretrizes ambientais. São desafios (i) a identificação precoce de danos e previsão de seu efeito no desgaste global da bateria, para hierarquia de reparos; (ii) a seleção da técnica apropriada a cada reparo. No presente trabalho, os autores compilam o estudo da progressão de danos sob diferentes tipos de reparo ao longo de mais de 30 anos em baterias heat-recovery e convencionais, de diversos modelos construtivos, e o combinam a tecnologias de inspeção para consolidar uma metodologia de gestão da preservação refratária. A metodologia foi aplicada em baterias localizadas no Brasil, avaliando a condição de mais de 400 fornos em 90 dias. Para a bateria mais crítica, foi identificado um potencial de prorrogação de vida útil em torno de 10 anos.

A floating gold dredge operating in coarse alluvial gravels of the Grey River on the west coast of the South Island, New Zealand, generated high concentrations of clay and colloidal particles in the dredge pond, which entered the groundwater system. Sampling was carried out at depths down to 20 m and it was found that variation of the length of the flow path occurred because of the movement of the dredge towards the piezometers. The alluvial gravels, the suspended sediments, the groundwater system and the water chemistry were all studied. Sediment concentrations were found to be highly variable with depth, but the relative concentrations in the depth profile were generally consistent as the flow distance shortened. The sediments were extremely fine and travelled further through the gravels than predicted. Comparison of field results with the available theory of deep filtration in clean beds of porous media gives some basis for estimating the behaviour of fine sediments in other alluvial systems
