En los últimos años se desarrollaron sistemas para la generación de paredes finales en yacimientos de cielo abierto y así proveer la pared adecuada a los parámetros que alimentan el sistema. Por tal motivo, el objeto del texto es realizar un estudio comparativo entre los dos sistemas de generación de paredes finales: Pushbacks y Whittle 3D. La aplicación de ambos sistemas se ejecutó a través de dos etapas en la mina Cuajone donde el sistema Pushbacks guió el diseño de paredes finales de mina desde 1984 hasta 1989. Mientras que el segundo, se utilizó desde 1989 hasta la actualidad puesto que es un sistema optimizador computarizado que permite obtener paredes finales óptimas en yacimientos explotables a cielo abierto de forma segura.

A study of drilling data at various stages of development of an orebody show that the semi-variogram, used for calculating the accuracy of block estimates can be ill-defined if too few data are available. The consequencesin this case are to have blocks supposedly more accurately known than is possible at the early drilling stage; such a result being potentially dangerous. However, as the amount of data increases the recalculated, semi-variograms approach the underlying semi-variogram of the deposit and the calculations made using them become more reliable and robust.

The monosaccharides glucose, galactose and arabinose, and the polyols glycerol and mannitol (0.1 Ufo WIV) supported pure and mixed culture heterotrophic bacterial manganese leaching of solid pyrolusite (MnO2, 2% W/V) to yield 14-38 mg/litre manganous ion in 3 days from a simple mineral salts media at 30°C. Supplementation of pure bacterial isolates growing on glucose with soluble intracellular photosynthate from freshwater algae (0.07 g/l carbohydrate) and marine algae (0.11 g/l) led to an improvement in Mn++ yields of 24 and 100 per cent respectively. Extracellular products of the freshwater algae (0.3 g/l carbohydrate) boosted recoveries by 57 per cent.

The involvement of concerned parties in all aspects of the Lihir Project from an early stage has promoted good relations between all groups. Activities involving landowners, the Lihir community, the New Ireland Provincial Government (NIPG) and the prospective developer include the Lihir Liaison Committee, Lihir Working Group, Environmental Planning Committee, Provincial Mining Task Force and the Lihir Mining Area Landowners Association (LMALA). With modifications, the Lihir Liaison model may be of use in promoting good relationships among parties in other mineral developments.

Tailings, from an active copper-zinc operation, containing about 10% sulphur were investigated to assess the onset of acid production and potential lime requirements for treatment of drainage. Oxygen consumption rates were measured over two years to verify spatial and seasonal variations in sulphide oxidation rates. Shallow cores were collected to assess the quality of tailings porewater and to characterize solids that had been subjected to oxidation and depletion of neutralization potential (NP) for several years. Oxygen consumption data were used to quantify rates of NP depletion and onset of acid drainage from the near- surface tailings. Based on measured oxygen consumption rates and identification of NP remaining in the tailings, future lime use in the treatment plant was expected to rise significantly without mitigation. Geochemical modeling calculations were calibrated with observed oxygen consumption rates and the model results agreed well with actual lime use in the waste water treatment plant during operations. The modeling also demonstrated the benefits of lower lime demands and treatment costs after closure as a result of construction a soil cover on the acid generating tailings.

The potassium mineral polyhalite (K2SO4.MgSO4.2CaSO4.2H20) found in large deposits in western Texas and southeastern New Mexico is associated with varying amounts of halite (sodium chloride, NaCl) and anhydrite (calcium sulphate, CaSO4). Although the anhydrite, because of its low solubility and slow rate of solution, is relatively inert, the halite is dissolved immediately in any process solution with which the polyhalite comes in contact. Limited quantities of sodium chloride in the liquors used for the hot extraction of polyhalite materially improve the results obtained,4 but only a very small sodium chloride content may be desired in the entering polyhalite in other procedures, such as Bureau of Mines process 75. In. all of the processes suggested for the recovery of potassium sulphate from polyhalite the control of the sodium chloride content will be desirable, if not absolutely essential to efficient operation. OCCURRENCE OF HALITE IN POLYHALITE A preliminary estimate of the amount of halite associated with typical deposits of polyhalite may be derived from drill cores, although it should be remembered that only 50 or 60 core tests have been made in the many hundreds of square miles of the Permian basin. From a mineralogical study of 41 of these cores, Schaller and Henderson6 state: In many of the sections of core that seem when viewed by the unaided eye to consist essentially of polyhalite, both halite and anhydrite are present in greatly varying quantities - with very minor quantities of clay and magnesite.

Fan applications in the mining industry have changed during the last 70 years. In 1922, J.R. Robinson authored a technical volume entitled Practical Mine Ventilation. At that time, atmospheric control had only recently shifted from natural to mechanical. The large, mechanical draft fans that were used then were centrifugal. The fans ran at low speeds, about300 rpm. Most were steam-engine driven. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, mines became larger, increasing the pressure and volume requirements of the fan equipment. Axial fans were designed to run at much higher speeds (710 to 880 rpm) and were driven by electric motors. They were also smaller and less expensive to install than the cumbersome centrifugal units. However, changes in mining have resulted in progressively higher static-pressure requirements. So centrifugal fans are once again proving to be a good choice.

Roadheaders are very versatile excavation machines used in tunnelling, mine development, and mine production for soft to medium strength rock formations. Performance prediction is an important factor for successful roadheader application and generally deals with machine selection, production rate and bit consumption. Among many different parameters, brittleness is also one of the material properties related to breakage characteristics and can be used as a cuttability parameter from a mechanical excavation point of view. The main objective of the research study is to contribute the brittleness of rock excavated to construct a new empirical equation for predicting the performance of roadheaders in different material and operational conditions. In this regard, a new performance prediction model for medium duty roadheaders based on a brittleness index (BI) is presented. In this study, rock mass brittleness index (RMBI) is defined in order to investigate the influence of BI on roadheader performance. RMBI is an index which can be used to relate the intact and rock mass characteristics to machine performance. Results demonstrated that RMBI is highly correlated to instantaneous cutting rate (ICR) (R²=0.94). Moreover, through the further analysis and normalization, the pick consumption index (PCI) was introduced as a parameter having a good relation with pick or bit consumption rates (PCR) (R²=0.79). Finally, the new predictive models for ICR and PCR showed very good correlations with the actual measured values. Various electrical and electromagnetic (EM) geophysical techniques are currently being evaluated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for their effectiveness in the detection and monitoring of electrically conductive (1 to 5 S/m) lixiviant (leach solution) to depths of 600 m, either above or below the water table. These techniques include magnetotellurics (MT) , controlled source audiofrequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT), resistivity and focused resistivity, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), frequency-domain electromagnetics (FEM), and time-domain electromagnetics (TEM). Of these techniques, TEM may be the most effective, but CSAMT and focused resistivity also hold promise. Geophysical computer modeling of the borehole TEM technique was conducted based on an idealized geoelectric section (layered earth) with characteristics based on the Santa Cruz porphyry copper deposit near Cas a Grande, AZ. Layer resistivities and thicknesses were obtained from geophysical data and geologic logs available from the site. Modeling of borehole TEM in both preleach and during leach situations was conducted. Simulating the TEM method using computer modeling proved to be encouraging since there were substantial differences between leached and nonleached responses. The modeling does not prove the effectiveness of TEM in the field, but does indicate that detection of deep lixiviant zones is theoretically possible.

INTRODUCTON James Howden first secured an order for two Service Tunnel Boring machines in November 1986. These Tunnel Boring machines were 5.7 and 5.4 metres in diameter and the full length including back up was 215 metres. Manufacture commenced in December 1986 at the Glasgow factories of James Howden & Company with the deliveries to site of the machines in September 1987 and March 1988 respectively. In December 1987 two further orders were secured for the land running tunnels at 8.7 metres diameter. This paper presents some of the challenges in building tunnel boring machines for the Eurotunnel project between Britain and France. The general specifications of the Tunnel Boring machines and length of drives are shown in Appendix 1. DESIGN PARAMETERS The specification given by the Consortium TML on behalf of their client Eurotunnel cleary indicated that cutting of the face should be concurrent with the building of the precast concrete lining rings. In order to do this a telescopic machine was thought to be the best solution. Ground conditions were described as chalk marls of homogeneous nature with the possibility of friable areas and some revelling. The application of similarity analysis derived from regional geochemical mapping data to the location of Ni-bearing intrusions was tested in southwest Finland, where a well-known nickel belt is situated. Samples of till from the vicinity of the Vammala and Kylmakoski Ni-Cu deposits, which were collected independently of the Geological Survey of Finland's regional geochemical mapping programme, were used to provide geochemical modelling data. The data consist of the aqua regia-leachable concentrations of 20 elements from the less than 0.06-mm fraction of glacial till. The variables used in the similarity analysis were selected on the basis of a factor analysis in which the method of oblique rotation was used. A hierarchical clustering of the modelling samples produced two main groups. The first group was described as the "nickel deposit environment model" and the second as the "nickel deposit location model". The data for the standardised variables were compared sample by sample with the model data by similarity analysis using the Simana program with a cos theta measure of pattern similarity. The nickel deposit environment model delineated the known Ni belt and indicated an extension to the east. The nickel deposit location model identified target areas of reasonable size with the greatest potential for Ni ores within the nickel belt

"This paper discusses how to effectively conduct energy efficiency studies during the design of new mineral processing plants and plant expansions. Energy management studies for new plants are ideally conducted as part of the feasibility study, but can also be done at the detailed design stage prior to the purchasing of equipment. Energy management engineers work as part of the mineral processing plant design team.Such studies usually result in energy savings of approximately 3-8% of the predicted plant’s energy consumption and energy demand. Potential cost savings can be significant. A variety of mineral processing systems – crushing/grinding, pumping, materials handling, fans/blowers, compressed air, and others – are assessed within this study.Energy Management Information System (EMIS) studies can also be performed for the new plant or plant expansion, as an independent study. EMIS can be incorporated into the electrical and controls design of the plant.Most Canadian Utility companies fund new plant design studies and provide financial incentives based on the predicted energy savings and incremental cost of the more energy-efficient design. A new plant energy efficiency study improves the potential for energy reduction because only the incremental equipment cost is included in the project return-on-investment calculation. After the design and construction phases, energy efficiency projects must justify the entire cost of the upgrade, which is significantly higher than the incremental cost alone.This paper outlines the major steps of a new plant/plant expansion energy efficiency study, the available utility company incentives, and the areas yielding the largest potential energy savings.IntroductionThis paper discusses energy efficiency studies and energy management systems with regards to mining operations. Energy management refers to the systems of monitoring, analyzing, and optimizing energy usage within a facility. It includes energy efficiency optimization of the initial plant design as well as the implementation of an Energy Management System (EnMS) and Energy Management Information System (EMIS) for optimizing energy usage over the lifetime of the facility. An EnMS is the organizational framework and procedures for managing energy use; an EMIS is the system of monitoring, reporting, and tracking process energy use against targets."

In an earlier paper (Stanton, 1953) a brief account was given of the geological environment and structure of the Lloyd Copper Mine orebody, Burraga, N.S.W. The present paper is concerned with the chemical and mineralogical features of the ore from this mine.Investigation has been made difficult because of inaccessibility of the workings, which have been fallen in for many years. The exact positions within the orebody of the specimens described in this paper are known in only a few cases. The specimens examined are from the collections of the Mining and Australian Museums, Sydney, and from material collected by the writer from the upper parts of the mine and from various dumps about the old workings.However, no significant variations in the nature (as distinct from grade) of the ore have been mentioned in the old reports, or by Carne (1908) or Kenny (1928), so it is likely that the specimens examined are reasonably representative of the orebody as a whole.CHEMICAL CONSTITUTIONThe ore is of simple and apparently very uniform composition.It is essentially a copper ore, with minor amounts of zinc and very minor amounts of lead. Plotting of copper against zinc shows a more or less sympathetic relationship between these at least as far as 20 per cent. copper - the highest grade assayed during the present investigation. The trend of the plots indicates a Cu/Zn ratio of about 15/1 to this point. Lead is very low and extremely sporadic, showing no clear relationships with the other metals.MINERAL COMPOSITIONThe principal non-opaque minerals are quartz and sericite, and these are accompanied by smaller quantities of muscovite, calcite and biotite. [The Bureau of rides is making a general study of the occurrence of the Clinton red iron ores of Alabama. In the course of this study, it developed that the iron-ore seams of the Woodstock and Bucksville areas were virtually unexplored., and the nature and extent of the ore deposits were undetermined. As a part of the work of the project, the Bureau investigated the occurrence of red iron ore in the .areas. Eighty-four channel samples, representing 317.6 linear feet, were taken from l2 locations along the outcrop of the red iron-ore seams, Ten diamond-drill holes, amounting to 3915.5 linear feet, were drilled. In these areas, commercial- and marginal-grade ores of minable thickness have been shown. It is estimated that 4,500,000 tons of indicated ore and 6,700,000 tens of inferred commercial-grade ore averaging 5.1 feet thick, 47.6 percent Fe, 26.1 percent insoluble, 0.1 percent CaO, and 0.04 percent P; 7,200,000 tins of inferred marginal grade ore averaging 6.1 feet thick, 36.2 percent Fe, .35.0 percent insoluble, 3.9 percent CaO, and 0.14 percent P; and 18,500,000 tons of ferruginous sandstone averaging 12.2 feet thick, 19.2 percent re, 50.1 percent insoluble, 9.6 percent CaO, and 0.14 percent P are present in the areas.. All tonnages are estimated as gross tons of recoverable ore in place, based' on 65-percent mining recovery. In accordance with established policy of the Bureau of Mines of publishing factual data as soon as possible after completion of field work, this description of the Woodstock and Bucksville areas is presented. Climax Molybdenum Company’s Henderson Mine is a large panel caving molybdenum mine located about 43 miles west of Denver, Colorado. Three Joy M120-72-880 fans are installed in parallel on the No. 1 exhaust shaft. Throughout the mine’s history, ventilation changes such as the completion of the No. 5 exhaust shaft have decreased the utilization of these fans. To optimize fan performance they have been run with the full complement of 16 blades, down to as few as four blades. Since the completion of ventilation upgrades associated with the Henderson 2000 project, one surface fan has been operated under normal conditions with 10 or 12 blades. With the completion of a new network model of the Henderson ventilation system, a tool was built to develop fan curves for possible future fan configurations and predict future fan performance. This paper describes the tool and its use at Henderson.

Impregilo/SA Healy JV recently completed this Project using the first slurry shield TBM’s in the United States. The Project used two TBM’s to mine 18,000 feet in sands, gravels, and silty alluvial materials under the Willamette River and downtown Portland, Oregon. This paper discusses alignment and geological conditions, equipment selection and plant setup, and tunnel excavation means and methods, parameters, and results. Extensive hyperbaric operations were required and will also be discussed.

The applicability of borehole assaying techniques, both conventional and advanced, to orebody evaluation in the mining industry is reviewed and assessed, and the research, development, and demonstration programs necessary to apply the various logging techniques to mining are outlined. At present, the principal method of orebody evaluation in the mining industry is coring. However, coring is costly and time-consuming, and potentially great savings can be realized if all or part of d coring program is replaced by a borehole logging suite specialized to the needs of the particular mining industry. Using a set of 12 minerals, most of which are essential to the U. S. economy, an algorithm is presented for calculating the priority of developing suitable borehole assaying technology to replace all or part of the coring in each mineral industry, The priority is expressed in terms of dollars currently spent for that portion of present orebody evaluation techniques which may eventually be replaceable by in-situ assay techniques. The orebody assay requirements (grades, accuracies, etc.) of the 12 selected mineral industries, as determined from mining industry interviews and published literature, are compiled and represent performance criteria for borehole assaying instruments for the particular industry. Current logging techniques, applied chiefly in the petroleum industry, and advanced assay techniques which are or may be packageable for borehole use are evaluated to determine their performance characteristics. The performance characteristics of the various conventional and advanced techniques are then compared with the performance criteria in each of the 12 mineral industries in order to determine the potential benefit derivable from each technique. Finally, the benefit available from each technique, averaged over the 12 mineral industries, is compared with the cost of development of the technique, to determine the overall priority for investment in research to develop the technique for use in mining. The technology assessment and cost-benefit analysis shows neutron activation analysis in its various forms to have the highest priority for research and development as a borehole logging technique. Other techniques found to be promising include x-ray fluorescence, x-ray diffraction, photoluminescence (optical fluorescence), and infrared spectroscopy. Of the 12 industries considered in the study, those where the need for advanced borehole logging technology is greatest are uranium, copper, gold, and iron.

Corpos de prova de ferro com diferentes níveis de pureza – um de pureza ultraelevada, dois de pureza elevada e um puro comercial – foram testados mecanicamente com diferentes taxas de deformação no âmbito de um antigo projeto. O objetivo era obter a resistência à tração de cada material e verificar a influência das impurezas e da taxa de deformação nas propriedades mecânicas do ferro de pureza ultraelevada. Para melhor compreender os resultados desses ensaios de tração, uma caracterização microscópica detalhada dessas amostras é realizada através deste trabalho. Para tal, foram analisadas as superfícies lateral e de fratura dos corpos de prova de tração no estereomicroscópio e no Microscópio Eletrônico de Varredura (MEV). O dano foi analisado em seções longitudinais ao longo do eixo de tração utilizando o microscópio óptico; a estrutura dos grãos deformados foi investigada por meio da técnica de microscopia EBSD (Difração de elétrons retroespalhados). Microestrutura, padrão de deformação, orientação dos grãos e as características das superfícies lateral e de fratura são então comparadas quanto ao processo de fabricação, nível de pureza e taxa de deformação.
