En ese afan de mecanización, las excavaciones subterráneas adquirieron dimensiones considerables y generaron problemas de estabilidad. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo señala un modelo de análisis, donde se determina cuáles son los bloques con posibilidades de movimiento hacia la excavación, así como el uso de las proyecciones estereográficas a través del diagrama de Wulff y construcciones complementarias de proyección.

Several deep Swedish cut-and-fill mines experience severe ground control problems, including roof collapse and wall sloughing, as a result of variable rock quality and high in situ stresses. A project to examine the problem included two main areas. The first was prediction of mining conditions at depth and the adaptation of cut-and-fill mining to such conditions; the second was the assessment and improvement of support methods at present and future depths. Simple, elastic, mine-scale numerical models were used to optimise stope sequencing and more detailed, stope-scale models to simulate the failure processes around a stope and the interaction of rock mass and support. Kristineberg was chosen for testing and calibration of the predictive methods because of its long history of severe ground conditions and the large base of observational and monitoring data available for comparison. Horizontal cut and fill was found technically suitable to depths beyond 1 000 m and economically viable if ore value covers support costs. Stability can be achieved with the present support technology down to 1 000 m but the 7-strand 15.2 mm cables have poor deformation properties (5% failure strain) compared with rebar rock bolts (17%). Reducing the intervals between levels from 100 m to 50 m will cut support costs and improve production reliability and capacity. Simulation of sill-pillar mining indicated that conditions would be most severe when pillar height was reduced to 15-20 m; mining of a sill pillar has been carried out successfully to the last 3 m, whose extraction is planned for the near future

The Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) of SW China is host to magmatic Ni–Cu–(PGE) sulfide and Fe–Ti–V oxide deposits which contain economic to subeconomic concentrations of precious and base metals. The formation of a given deposit-type (ie sulfide versus oxide) is thought to be related to the type of parental magma (ie high-Ti versus low-Ti) and the subsequent processes (ie fractional crystallisation and sulfide segregation), which allowed for metal enrichment.We examined the PGE of Baima and Taihe oxide-bearing layered mafic intrusions from the ELIP (Shellnutt, Ma and Qi, in press), and compared them with the nearby Xinjie and Hongge intrusions as well as with the Emeishan flood basalts. The PGE results for the two intrusions are contrasting. The Baima gabbroic rocks are almost PGE-barren (SPGE < 4 ppb) whereas the Taihe gabbroic rocks are variable, but generally much higher in PGE concentrations (SPGE < 2 to ~300 ppb), although the gabbros from both intrusions are enriched in platinum-subgroup PGE (PPGE = Rh, Pt and Pd) relative to iridium-subgroup PGE (IPGE = Os, Ir and Ru). Cu/Zr, Ni/Ir, Y/Pt, Cu/Pd and Ni/Ir systematics suggest that the Baima rocks were derived from a relatively evolved, mafic, S-undersaturated parental magma that was affected by earlier sulfide segregation. In contrast, the Taihe rocks record evidence of both S-saturated and S-undersaturated conditions and that the parental magma was likely emplaced very close to S-saturation. Through comparison of the PGE contents in the Emeishan flood basalts and the Emeishan oxide-bearing intrusions, we provide a self-consistent model for ELIP that the PGE budget in a magma is not strictly controlled by magma series (high-Ti versus low-Ti), but very much by crustal contamination.CITATION:Ma, G, Shellnutt, J G and Qi, L, 2015. The selection of Sydney and Port Kembla for the First Ordinary Meeting of the Institute for 1938 was, no doubt, a recognition of the celebrations marking the 150th Anniversary of the first settlement of this country. In selecting a theme for my Presidential Address, I propose to depart from the precedents of my distinguished predecessors, as I feel that this year of celebration is the natural year for a brief review of the history and progress of the Institute.In July, 1892, the Amalgamated Mining Managers' Association of Australasia held its Annual Conference in Ballarat, Victoria, when Mr. Uriah Dudley, who attended as a delegate from Broken Hill, brought forward the advisability of the formation of an Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Mr. Dudley was authorised to take such action as he thought fit, and the result was the formation of a Provisional Committee in Broken Hill of men who were mostly members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Broken Hill was therefore really the birthplace of the Institute.A circular headed Broken Hill, September, 1892, with the signature of Uriah Dudley, Acting Hon. Design and construction of temporary shafts for underground facilities often require evaluation of bottom stability due to rupture (blow-ins) caused by water pressure acting on a bottom plug. This paper provides an overview of shaft bottom stability evaluation methods for the case of a relatively watertight soil plug which overlies an artesian aquifer. Methods of considering plug perimeter shear, plug buckling and pressure relief are discussed. Minimum factors of safety are suggested. Future use of the shaft subgrade is also considered. Bottom plug failure case histories at several shafts are evaluated. This paper should be useful to project designers, ground support system design engineers and contractors involved with construction of shafts for underground facilities

This report describes the first phase of an investigation aimed at obtaining a wider knowledge of the problems involved in smelting titaniferous magnetites. Liquidus temperature measurements were made on selected slag compositions in the titania-alumina-silica-calcia-magnesia system. Both the melting-holding-quenching method and the hot-stage microscope method were used in the tests. Liquidus temperatures of slags studied ranged from 1,217° to 1,667° C. The lowest liquidus temperature of the slags occurred when the difference between CaO plus MgO and Si02 was less than 12 weight-percent. Liquidus temperatures were also lowered when Si02 was substituted for Ti02 plus Al2O3 when CaO and MgO levels were held constant. Improved methods for the measurement of liquidus temperatures on very small samples are described.

Production, on the basis of preliminary data, was 964 kt (1.1 millon st) with an estimated value of $45.3 million. That was a 10- percent decrease in tonnage from 1.07 Mt (1.2 mil-lion st) with a value of $49.2 million that was produced in 2007. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 63 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 73 percent of production was airfloat, 16 percent was crude and 11 percent was water-slurried.

A ArcelorMittal Tubarão vem trabalhando nos últimos dois anos na implantação de um sistema automatizado de julgamento da qualidade da superfície de bobinas laminadas a quente, juntamente com a ArcelorMittal Global R&D. Tal sistema é denominado CGSIS – Coil Grading Surface Inspection System – e tem a função de interpretar as ocorrências de defeitos superficiais, identificados por um sistema de inspeção automático através de câmeras CCD auxiliado por técnicas de visão artificial, à luz da necessidade requerida pela aplicação final do material. Todas as ações sugeridas pelo sistema são baseadas em regras de aplicação e nas informações obtidas do sistema de inspeção automático, requerendo para isso taxas de acerto de classificação de defeitos adequadas para uma boa tomada de decisão. Para tanto, várias melhorias foram necessárias, envolvendo questões de ambiente, desempenho, confiabilidade, disponibilidade e treinamento do sistema, para se obter com isso melhores níveis de detecção e acerto. Outras questões envolvidas em tal processo concernem às mudanças aplicadas a políticas já estabelecidas de julgamento e comunicação do novo sistema com os sistemas já existentes. Vários benefícios da implantação do projeto já estão sendo percebidos provenientes das etapas de preparação para a instalação e espera-se que após a operacionalização um ganho superior a R$320k entre redução de custo com pessoal, aproveitamento de material e redução de reclamações de clientes seja alcançado.

Durante a laminação a quente a superfície de aço é exposta ao ar e água, sendo esta última utilizada para controlar a temperatura dos rolos e/ou a taxa de refrigeração do aço. Esta exposição leva à formação de uma camada de óxido na superfície das barras, que pode facilitar ou dificultar a corrosão, servindo como uma barreira ou como um caminho para íons presentes na atmosfera e, além disso, causar modificações nas propriedades mecânicas. O objetivo do presente estudo é avaliar o efeito do processo de resfriamento após laminação a quente sobre o desempenho de vergalhões de aço microligado frente a propriedades mecânicas e a formação da camada de óxidos. Os vegalhões produzidos com diferentes métodos de resfriamento tiveram análise de microestrutura, tração, microdureza, dobramento, espessura da carepa formada, análise de corrosão e foram expostos à atmosfera. O progresso da corrosão foi avaliado pela observação visual do produto de corrosão formado sobre a superfície das barras. A morfologia da camada de óxido após o processo de laminação foi estudada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). As amostras que tiveram uma taxa de resfriamento maior, 63%P e 100%P, tiveram também um aumento nas propriedades mecânicas. A amostra 100%P foi a que obteve melhor comportamento frente ao ensaio de corrosão. Além disso, verificou-se que a camada de óxido inicial nas barras de aço, que são relacionados com o processo de fabricação, possuiam aderência diferente ao vergalhão, sendo a melhor condição observada nas amostras 63%P e 100%P.

In the case of a reservoir where the oil underlies a large gas cap and overlies bottom water, production can be inzproved considerably if wells are perforated below the water-oil contact rather than opposite the oil-bearing section. The theoretical arguments for this improvement, which in some cases may be tenfold, are supported by experimental evidence. INTRODUCTION Reservoirs frequently consist of one sand body containing an oil layer underlying a thick, gas-bearing section and overlying bottom water (Fig. 1). Wells in such reservoirs are customarily opened up opposite the oil-bearing interval or, rather, opposite the lower part of this interval (Fig. 2). More often than not, it is inefficient or prohibited to blow off large quantities of gas with the oil. This im-psses a severe limitation on the drawdown, which results in low oil-production rates. Because of the small difference in specific gravity between oil and water, the latter will easily cone upwards, so that the production of water together with the oil is not prevented by this completion method. In such a situation wells should be opened deeper, in the originally water-bearing zone. The gas can be shut off by not perforating over the upper part of the interval (Fig. 3) or by a tubing hung close to the bottom of the interval (Fig. 4). Initially much water will be produced, but when steady-state conditions have been established (as depicted in Figs. 3 and 4) larger drawdowns are permissible than in a conventionally completed well, and correspondingly higher oil-production rates will result. Water cuts are only slightly higher because of the small effect of gravity on the water-oil flow distribution. CALCULATIONS The ratio of improvement has been estimated by means of approximate calculations. The completion depicted in Fig. 4 is the most convenient basis for these calculations. By postulating that vertical flow gradients can be disregarded, the Appendix shows that the well-known Dupuit formula can be obtained except for some complication due to the presence of two fluids rather than one. The Appendix makes the reasonable assumption that, for suitable boundary conditions, the oil layer occupies a constant fraction of the total fluid height throughout the reservoir. The oil- and water-production rates can thus be related to the liquid levels in the borehole as follows:

A fidelização com todas as particularidades do processo real de coqueificação faz desta metodologia uma poderosa ferramenta para tomada de decisão na definição de novos blends, como também para a caracterização de carvões dos quais ainda não se conhece seu potencial para produzir um coque de boa qualidade. Diferentemente das tecnologias similares existentes, o “Box Test” da SunCoke Energy tem robustez suficiente para ser reutilizado para até quatro enfornamentos e é capaz de produzir massa suficiente de coque para que sejam realizadas todas as análises para uma perfeita caracterização do coque.

As this is the first occasion I have had, and probably will be the only opportunity I shall have, of addressing such a large gathering of members and of student members of the Institute, I desire to- express my very deep appreciation of the honour 'you have paid me in electing me to the office of President for the current year. I realise also that such selection is a tribute to the Company which controls operations here, the centre selected for the annual meeting, but nevertheless there is afforded to the recipient a great deal of pride and of pleasure to hold the highest office in what is, in my opinion, undoubtedly the most important engineering society in Australasia.The past year has witnessed an unprecedented and unparalleled event in the history of the British Empire, and I think that we must all feel a wonderful sense of proud patriotism; the whole world was forced to admire the public calm and the dignity which accompanied the change in our Sovereign Ruler, and great tribute is due to the statesmanship of the Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin. At this time, we should, I think, place on record our prayer, in common with all his people, that His Majesty, King George the Sixth, may enjoy a long and prosperous reign.The meeting at Port Pirie recalls one who did so much for the advancement of mining and metallurgy, especially in Australia. I refer to the late Mr. Delprat, who, as General Manager of The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, had under his control for many years the smeltery in this centre. As you are aware, he had been elected an honorary member of this Institute, as well as of our sister Institutes in England and in America...

This investigation was undertaken to obtain basic information necessary for the design and operation of a plant for recovering metallic values from nickeliferous laterite and serpentine of the Philippine Islands. It was divided into three parts: (1) Mineralogical studies and preliminary mineral dressing tests; (2) electric smelting of the ores, upgrading of ferronickel by blowing with oxygen, smelting laterite slag to produce crude iron, and the production of mild steel; and (3) nickel and cobalt recovery from upgraded ferronickel. Results of the investigation indicate that it should be feasible to recover nickel, iron, and possibly cobalt products from the laterite and ferro-nickel from the serpentine. Mineralogical studies were made on representative fractions of the laterite and serpentine tonnage samples and on five selected samples; mineral dressing tests were made only on laterite. The nickel occurs principally associated with hydrous iron oxides and chemically combined with serpentine; garnierite was the only discrete nickel mineral identified, and it was found in a highly decomposed serpentine. The bulk of the cobalt was found in wadlike manganese oxide material. Approximately twice as much chromite was found in the laterite as in the serpentine, By mineral dressing techniques, laterite was separated into two fractions: one fraction contained over 90 percent of the nickel and cobalt, and 83 percent of the iron; the other fraction contained 74 percent of the chromium. A cobalt concentrate (1.1 percent Co) was produced by a scrubbing and sizing procedure.

This research concerns the mineralogical study of the physico-chemical reactions taking place at the pozzolan-binder interface. Lime binder/ pozzolan mixtures have been prepared for different natural zeolites. Analcime, phillipsite, chabazite, erionite, mordenite and clinoptilolite were mixed with portlandite and water, after which the progress in the reaction was quantitatively determined by thermogravimetrical analyses from three to 180 days. A first and important step was the thorough characterisation of the raw materials by quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscope energy- dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) measurements of the zeolite minerals, Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) specific surface area measurements, grain-size analyses and cation exchange capacity measurements. Beside these zeolite samples with varying Si/Al ratios, two clinoptilolite samples exchanged to the calcium, potassium and sodium form were studied and the difference in their short- and long-term reactivity was assessed. Also the difference in reactivity between identical clinoptilolite samples ground to different grain sizes, obviously having different specific surface areas, was determined experimentally. The results indicate that the external surface area only influences the short-term reactivity, whereas the cation content has effect on both long- and short-term. Na-exchanged samples combine clearly more portlandite in the first few days, whereas the reaction slows down afterwards compared to K- and Ca-exchanged samples. The early reactivity of the unexchanged zeolite samples could be explained by these two parameters, but their long-term reactivity seemed to be related to their Si/Al ratio. Samples with zeolites rich in Si reacted faster then their Al-rich counterparts.

Seismic networks in deep gold mines of South Africa are often planar owing to the tabular geometry of the orebody and, therefore, the mining infrastructure. Consequently, seismic event locations are poorly constrained in the direction perpendicular to the reef plane, and symmetrical locations above and below the reef plane may fit the observed data equally well. This problem may be resolved in situations where the strata above and below the reef plane have significantly different seismic velocities, which is the case for the Ventersdorp Contact Reef at Kusasalethu mine (previously Elandskraal, the amalgamation of Deelkraal and Elandsrand). A location method using a layered location model that takes into account the velocity contrast between the layers was tested. Observed direct- and head-waves were used to determine the velocity bounds of the P-wave velocities in the two-layer model. The data-set was also used to find the best P- and S-wave velocities for the two layers by grid searching over a range of velocities and minimizing the sum of the travel-time residuals. The results from the grid search and those from the calibration of velocities using direct- and head-waves give similar P-wave velocities for each of the two layers. A second set of seismic events was then relocated with this layered model and locations closer to reef were found. This simple layered location method goes some way to reduce the reefperpendicular location errors for Kusasalethu mine in particular. Keywords mine seismology, velocity model, location methods.

Southern Africa has a history rich in the pyrometallurgical processing of ores. Two of the alloys produced are high-carbon ferromanganese (74?83 per cent Mn) and silicomanganese (59?67 per cent Mn and 14?31 per cent Si). The largest land-based manganese ore deposit in the world is based in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. In 2010, 6.3 Mt of ore from the deposit was exported, mainly to China, Norway, Japan, and India, and an estimated 1.1 Mt beneficiated locally to produce manganese ferroalloys. In southern Africa the producers of manganese ferroalloys are Metalloys and Assmang, and of silicomanganese Transalloys, Mogale Alloys, and Match Corporation. Submerged arc furnace technology is utilized in the production of high-carbon ferromanganese (HCFeMn) and silicomanganese, applying the discard slag practice in both instances. The carbon content of HCFeMn is reduced using converter technology and that of SiMn using the Perrin process. Ninety per cent of the world?s manganese ferroalloys production is consumed by the steel industry. The consumption (and production) of manganese ferroalloys therefore closely follows worldwide steel production. From 2001 to 2010, the doubling of the worldwide production of manganese ferroalloys can be attributed to an increase in production capacity in Asia and Oceania, with the largest increase in the production of SiMn. Manganese ferroalloys produced in Asia and Oceania are mainly for the local market, with North America, Europe, Russia, and Turkey the major markets for alloys from southern Africa. The major challenges faced by the southern African manganese ferroalloy producers are increasing electricity tariffs and productivity of labour, which require a concerted effort by all parties involved to achieve a satisfactory solution. As the popularity of precast concrete segmental linings for tunnels is growing in North America, some problems related to grouting of, and near, these linings are starting to appear. The installation of a segmental lining behind a TBM requires that the annular space around the lining be quickly filled with grout to prevent collapse of the ground. In practice, the filling of the annulus is frequently delayed and takes place a distance behind the machine typically via grout ports centrally located in the segments. If partial collapse of the annulus has occurred, it may become necessary to use higher grouting pressures in an attempt to distribute the grout. There have been several occasions where these increased pressures have caused damage to the tunnel linings. Similarly, compaction grouting adjacent to a tunnel lining can cause damage. This paper quantifies the effects of such grouting on a typical precast lining.
