Digital Simulation of Particulate Processes The inherent complexity of mineral particulates (shape, size and mineralogical texture) has challenged conventional simulation model approaches for decades. Much effort was expedited in using mathematical assumptions to accommodate stereological effect. With the advance of instrumental methods such as x-ray microtomography 3D structure can, in many cases, be measured directly. The information derived from such measurements provides direct input to building the structural digital model. In addition digital simulation methods that enable creation of process realistic particulate properties in an efficient digital computer space have demonstrated their effectiveness to model a variety of realistic packing, sorting and multi-phase processes. The paper reviews recent advances in the use of information derived from 3D micro-tomographic imaging and laser scanning technology can be coupled with digital methods to enable simulation of tablet compaction and dissolution, filtration and permeability, column packing and leaching kinetics, packing and cementation of nuclear waste. By assigning 'properties' to a digital zone (voxel) in the computational space it is possible to mimic the realistic characteristics of quite complex particulate mineral processing systems. The system self-adapts to correct the coherent particle characteristics (shape, size, compound, porosity) with time. Such simulations are useful to elucidate the sensitivity of system performance to variations in process parameters. Dimensional scaling of the approach is also possible, as the case studies will illustrate, in deploying the method to both small (micron) and large (m) features. The use of process realistic simulations presents experimental challenges in code validation. It is in this context that other tomographic methods play a role in direct 3D measurement of system behaviour such as electrical and optical sensors.

The State of California, Department of Transportation is currently retrofitting a major interchange near the San Francisco area. The project is located in a highly traveled area of Oakland with light rail commuter service near many footings. Over 600 micropiles are being used in conjunction with CIDH piles for footing stabilization. A specially designed Soil Nail pile will support footings for a new light rail utility structure. Pile testing features in this contract serve as points of interest for future foundation designs. The presentation focuses on substructure issues of this incterchange retrofit. Dada la remoción del material mineral o estéril a quebrantarse, es de vital importancia la elección y el uso adecuado de los explosivos en la explotación minera de Atacocha. Por tal motivo, el objetivo del texto señala la eficacia de la voladura de explosivos según el tipo de mineral a romperse y la geología del yacimiento. La selección de detonantes es de acuerdo a su peso sobre la base de su potencia relativa comparada con la nitroglicerina. Entre la selección de explosivos en trabajos mineros subterráneos se considera las siguientes características: potencia, velocidad, sensiblidad, resistencia al agua, densidad y gases producidos por la explosión. Así como el método de carga, diámetro de taladro, clases detacos usados, el modo de atacar, diámetro del cartucho y la demanda de explosivo en el mercado. El método de carga requiere que el explosivo sea flexible para llenar los espacios vacíos del taladro y prevee que el uso de cartuchos plásticos faciliten las cargas en taladros verticales usados en nuestros stoppes de corte y relleno. Cabe recordar que la resistencia de los cartuchos a la humedad no siempre se aplican al agua puesto que en las minas de Atacocha, su impermeabilización es de lo más común. De otro lado, las mechas se componen de tres o más capas impermeables y las cápsulas se fijan a las mechas de seguridad por medio de alicates especiales. Finalmente, los explosivos utilizados el yacimiento de Atacocha, se seleccionaron de acuerdo a las características físicas de las masas de roca y mineral que influyen en el problema de su arranque (tenacidad, fragilidad, dureza, plasticidad de la roca misma, planos de estratificación, exfoliación, grietas y quebraduras), sin encontrar dificultad en su voladura dada la suavidad del mineral como de las rocas.

The Namibian Copper Joint Venture has been formed to undertake development of the Haib copper deposit, one of the largest undeveloped copper resources in Africa. The development programme includes extensive hydrometallurgical testwork that is being managed by Kvaerner Metals (formerly Davy International).Various parts of the programme have been contracted to four third-party laboratories. The testwork involves sample selection and characterization, amenability tests, and a parametric study on the leaching variables. All portions of the programme are described and the results a represented. The ores selected for testing are quartz feldspar porphyries. The amenability tests include ?mapping? studies to assess optimum leach conditions, tests at high oxidation potentials, oxidation with various bacterial strains, and heap leach modelling. The parametric programme includes such variables as ore grade, leach temperature, crush size, pH, and ferric iron content of the lixiviant. Testing was done on both whole ore and concentrate. Results show that bacterial leaching is effective and that ore grade and temperature are key variables. Crush size and pH have less impact on copper extraction. For mid-grade ore, about 0.25 per cent copper, extraction is projected to reach 50 per cent after two years when heap leaching tertiary crushed ore at 60°C and pH 1.5. The heap leach operation would fit well with the proposed roast-leach operation used to treat higher grade ores. The latter could supply the low cost heat and acid needed in the heap leach.

Foi estudado o efeito da temperatura no comportamento à corrosão sob tensão do aço inoxidável dúplex AISI 318 em solução contendo 115.000 ppm de cloreto, pH4 a temperatura ambiente e a 70°C. Ensaios de tração com baixa de taxa de deformação foram realizados. Foi avaliada a susceptibilidade do aço inoxidável dúplex AISI 318 à corrosão sob tensão no potencial de circuito aberto e em vários potenciais anódicos e catódicos. Os resultados mostraram que a redução do alongamento variou com o potencial aplicado. Os resultados experimentais mostraram que o aço AISI 318 ficou imune à corrosão sob tensão em potencial entre -750 mVECS e 1.000 mVECS na temperatura ambiente e entre -650 e -100mVECS para a temperatura de 70°C. Em potenciais maiores que o potencial de pite observou-se uma redução drástica no alongamento em ambas as temperaturas. No entanto, quando os potenciais aplicados foram abaixo de -650 mVECS para a temperatura de 70°C e -750mVECS para a temperatura ambiente, houve uma redução no alongamento final até a ruptura, provavelmente através do processo de fragilização por hidrogênio.

The Fraser Range is composed dominantly of basic pyroxene granulites derived from basalts, many of which appear to have been vesicular and pillowed. Acidic and basic garnet-bearing granulites are important in the west, and acidic granulites and narrow anorthosite layers are dominant in some regions east of the Fraser Range. An extensive flat-lying olivine gabbro sheet cuts the granulites, and in places has been converted to spineI-bearingmeta-gabbros and pyroxene granulites. The granulites of the Fraser Range (Proterozoic) are separated from the gneisses and schists of the goldfields regions (Archaean) by the Fraser Fault, over which there is a large gravity anomaly (gradient 20 milligals per mile). Some of the problems associated with the concentration of Cu, and Ni liberated from mineral lattices during metamorphism, and other principles of metal concentration in granulite terranes, are discussed. The recognition of vesicular and pillowed zones, even though highly metamorphosed, is of fundamental importance.

Detailed monitoring of the response of the rock mass between rockbolt reinforcement units subjected to a simulated seismic source has been successfully conducted. This work has shown the increase in amplification of the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) with distance from a rock bolt unit, and, a minimum PPV for rockburst damage for the given site characteristics. This understanding, at this site, will allow the design of a suitable rock bolt spacing to prevent unravelling of the rock mass between the rock bolt units for a given level of seismicity. Or, alternatively, an estimation of the requirement for a suitable fabric support system, for the anticipated level of seismicity, can be made.

Amostras de aço inoxidável UNSS31803 duplex foram nitretadas sob plasma em atmosfera gasosa de 75% de nitrogênio e 25% de hidrogênio em temperatura de 400°C durante 20 horas. A microestrutura do material como recebido apresentava cordões de ferrita e austenita, alinhados no sentido da laminação, com aproximadamente 50% de cada uma das fases. A caracterização microestrutural foi feita por microscopia óptica, difração de raios X, MEV e EBSD. As propriedades mecânicas e tribológicas das superfícies tratadas foram avaliadas utilizando ensaios de microdureza e esclerometria linear instrumentada. As camadas obtidas na nitretação a plasma em baixa temperatura (LTPN) eram constituídas por ferrita expandida (aN) e austenita expandida (?N), com durezas de 1509 HV e de 1362 HV, respectivamente. Os ensaios de esclerometria linear mostraram que, num primeiro estágio, o indentador se movimenta sobre a camada nitretada, promovendo deformação plástica nas bordas do sulco, denotando a possibilidade de movimentação de discordância nas fases expandidas da camada nitretada. O coeficiente de atrito medido durante esse estágio ficou estável em torno de 0,05. Ao final do primeiro estágio houve início de formação de microtrincas, aumentando o coeficiente de atrito aparente. A transição para o 2º estágio ocorre com formação de microtrincas cuja densidade aumenta com o aumento da profundidade de risco. Nesse estágio o coeficiente de atrito cresce linearmente com o tempo e profundidade de risco, o número de microtrincas cresce e as microtrincas observadas são predominantemente transgranulares, típicas de falha coesiva da camada. Foram observadas, também, microtrincas intergranulares que causam o destacamento individual de pequenos grãos de ferrita e/ou austenita expandida. No terceiro estágio de riscamento o coeficiente de atrito aparente tende a se estabilizar em torno de 0,16. O ensaio de esclerometria linear realizado no aço como recebido apresenta coeficiente de atrito sempre crescente até atingir um valor em torno de 0,21.

The California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) evaluated several pile foundation schemes for supporting the structures along the realignment of Interstate 880. The project replaces the double-decked (Cypress) viaduct collapsed in Oakland, California during the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. Structural support demands led to the selection of steel pipe piles (16-, 24-, and 42-inch-(406-, 610- and 1067-mm-)diameter), filled with concrete and steel reinforcement. Deep penetrations required through layers of very dense/cemented sands in some locations, caused serious drivability and pile integrity concerns. The need for large pile driving hammers and large diameter steel pipe piles pushed the engineers well beyond local experience. Such questions as the feasibility of driving the pipes closed-ended through dense upper strata and quantifying the effects of installation on the long-term capacities of the piles led Caltrans to develop a comprehensive pile test program to address the design and construction issues effectively. The results were furnished to prospective bidders on the production stages of the ensuing contracts.

Pontos estratégicos de solos foram analisados com o objetivo de estudar a possível contaminação de água pluvial, por difusividade, mantidas em reservatórios existentes na Ilha dos Arvoredos, localizada no Guarujá, litoral de São Paulo, Brasil. Iniciou-se o procedimento com a preparação das amostras (homogeneização e quarteamento), seguida das análises físicas (granulometria e umidade). A caracterização foi realizada por espectrometria de fluorescência de Raio-X e por espectrometria de absorção atômica. As concentrações de enxofre foram quantificadas por forno de combustão e as cinzas e matéria volátil por TGA (Analisador Termogravimétrico). As análises realizadas em Raio –X mostraram composição química de solo argiloso com altas concentrações de SiO2 e Al2O3 e as realizadas no equipamento de combustão mostraram concentrações de enxofre menores que 0,03%. Os resultados se apresentaram negativos para metais pesados ou outro tipo de elemento que poderia comprometer a potabilidade das águas contidas nos reservatórios.

The illustrated device uses the principle that the lamp can burn with a smaller inlet passage if the air is rich in O2 and that the size of the inlet can be made a measure of O2 percentage. The appliance consists of an adjustable cut-off applied to the inlet of a safety lamp of the improved Gray pattern. Precision is assessed from tables of calibration tests in air contaminated with blackdamp of CO2:N2 composiiton 1:5.67 at temperatures of 40-70 degrees F. Results are presented of tests at St. Germain's colliery, of tests in air contaminated with pure CO2 and of air contaminated with both blackdamp and inflammable gas; published ranges in mine-air blackdamp compositions are tabulated as ranging from 90.06% N2 to 43.90% CO2. When firedamp is present at 1.25-2.5%, its content must first be estimated by means of the cap and a fifth of its value then deducted from the lamp reading for O2

The details in small-scale variability of the geological occurrence and chemical composition of ferromanganese crusts are not yet well understood, although the northwestern Pacific seamounts are believed to be among the most promising areas for rare metal resources. Our belief is that geological observations and geochemical analyses are still insufficient for economic evaluation or for discussion of depositional processes and environments. Our team, composed of geologists, mineralogists, geochemists, physical engineers, and microbiologists has attempted to utilize an ROV for in-situ measurement and for sampling of undisturbed and uncontaminated ferromanganese crusts at three typical seamounts in the NW Pacific near the Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone. The first ROV geological survey of ferromanganese crusts was successfully completed, and the ROV proved to be the most powerful, efficient and elegant method to date. The collected samples (more than total 1 ton of crusts, at more than 100 sites along a total of approximately 10 km of survey lines) were most suitable to analyze water-depth dependency and secular variation of their composition. The intact surfaces of crusts, collected without the usual abrasion caused by dredging, were also valuable for microbial study of Mn oxidizing bacteria. The ROV sampling devices, however, can be improved with further sophisticated drills or rock saw blades in the future.

"The Three Bluffs gold deposit is located in the Committee Bay greenstone belt, which forms part of the Rae domain of the western Churchill province, Nunavut, Canada. Gold mineralization is hosted by iron formation of the Neoarchean volcanosedimentary Prince Albert Group, and is associated with silicification (quartz veining) and sulfidation of magnetite and other Fe-rich minerals. Conventional U-Pb zircon dating of a conformable dacite unit within the volcanosedimentary host-rock sequence and a crosscutting diorite intrusion confirm a ~2.7 Ga age for deposition of the supracrustal package. U-Pb monazite dates and Pb isotopic analyses of sulfides were obtained by laser ablation-multicollector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS). A subset of U-Pb monazite (1813.8 ± 8.7 Ma) and Re-Os arsenopyrite (1822 ± 21 Ma) dates, combined with a Pb-Pb secondary errorchron age for pyrite and arsenopyrite (1829 ± 77 Ma), suggest that gold mineralization associated with sulfidation of the iron formation occurred at ~1815 Ma, prior to high-grade (upper amphibolite facies) tectonometamorphism in the Three Bluffs area (D2TB/(M2TB). An ~1815 Ma age for deposit formation is broadly consistent with evidence from elsewhere in the western Churchill province and to the southwest in Manitoba and Saskatchewan for a late Trans-Hudson (1.9-1.8 Ga) gold mineralizing event. The majority of U-Pb monazite ages form a second population at 1780.6 ± 4.2 Ma, similar to the age of the majority of Re-Os arsenopyrite analyses (1763 ± 11 Ma). These dates are thought to reflect the timing of peak M2TB metamorphism. 40Ar/39Ar dating of amphibole, biotite, and muscovite yielded plateau ages ranging from 1723.8 ± 9.0 Ma to 1710 ± 17 Ma, which are interpreted to record the timing of postpeak metamorphic cooling to below the respective closure temperatures for Ar diffusion in these minerals. Le gîte aurifère de Three Bluffs est situé dans la ceinture de roches vertes de Committee Bay, laquelle appartient au domaine de Rae dans l’ouest de la province de Churchill, au Nunavut, Canada. In 1985, at the request of Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a 54,480-acre portion of the 93,205-acre Dry Valley Rim Wilderness Study Area (CA-020-615), in order to evaluate its identified resources. The area studied is in Washoe County, NV, and Lassen County, CA, about 35 miles east of Susanville, CA. No metallic resources were identified. The Red Rock and Willow Springs areas contain 85 million tons of altered basalt with zeolite amygdules. This material, averaging more than 50 percent chabazite, constitutes a subeconomic zeolite resource. This zeolite-bearing material would require beneficiation to upgrade it for higher value uses. Natural zeolites have a small market in the United States, which is presently supplied by other higher grade material. There is low probability that these resources will be mined in the foreseeable future. The Capricorn claims, adjacent to the study area, are on alluvial sediments containing more than 30 percent montmorillonoid clays. The material is not usable as pozzolan and was not tested for other uses such as absorbency, oil clarification, or insecticide carrier. The term pozzolan refers to a number of siliceous materials which are combined with portland cement to enhance the physical properties of the resultant concrete. The area is remote from market and contains low value material. It is improbable that this occurrence will be mined in the foreseeable future.

A tractor-integrated version of an explosive ripping system was developed for mining application. This system utilizes diesel fuel and a tractor-mounted blower supplying 30 psig compressed air to a two-stage combustion chamber to produce a high pressure (600 psia) gas charge. The charge is rapidly released into the rock formation near the tip of the ripper. The system, mounted on a D9 tractor, was tested at several quarry and mining operations to investigate rock fracturing effectiveness. Although the results of comparative ripping passes conclusively demonstrated that the system increases rock fracture, performance of the system is strongly dependent on rock morphology and properties as well as basic performance of the tractor-ripper. The theory of conventional and explosive ripping modes is described and existing correlations of seismic velocity and ripper performance are shown to be in error.

The progressive development of underground mines frequently requires increased ventilation flow rates through mine shafts that were originally designed for lower rates. Where these shafts are equipped with conveyances running on rope guides, the higher air flow rates adversely affect the lateral motion of conveyances and could cause conveyances to collide with the shaft walls or with one another. Hence the safety impact of higher flow rates requires proper assessment. This can be undertaken by use of computer simulation models to predict the dynamic motion of the conveyances during hoisting. It can also be undertaken entirely by field testing, or using a combination of simulation and field testing. This paper discusses these techniques and makes cautionary remarks about setting an absolute generic maximum flow velocity for all shafts. Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela all have a higher than average political risk compared with other South American countries. Successful operations require good political-risk information, a thorough political-risk-management plan and a strategy to deal with political-risk perception on the part of the investing public. Colombia is perceived as about the riskiest place in the world to do business. A selection of recent headlines reads: “Colombia on the brink” (Economist, 1998), “Colombia’s ship of state is sinking” (Insight on the News, 1998), or simply “Bad news” (US Catholic, 1998). The World’s Most Dangerous Places rates Colombia as “currently the most dangerous place in the Western Hemisphere, and perhaps the world” (Aral and Pelton,1998). And many prospective investors and analysts say to Greystar Resources: “Yes, we love your results, but Colombia?”

Dust emission from blast demolition and other construction activities can be a nuisance; it is widely recognized that fine particles less than 10 µm in equivalent diameter (called PM10) may cause health problems. Mist spray systems, such as rain guns, sprinklers, water/surfactant sprays (or foams) etc., are some of the most effective dust suppression methods. A large amount of research has showed that when water droplets are produced in an equal amount to that of dust particles, the airborne dust is suppressed by the agglomeration of dust and mist particles. A method for generating micro-sized mist from water, achieved by the detonation of explosives in the water tube, was suggested and is called the ‘detonationdriven water bag burst system’. There are many experimentally observed limitations of the explosioninduced water break-up process. The water bag explosion tests were simulated using the AUTODYN software, in order to investigate the aerosolization mechanisms of the detonation-driven water and water break-up process into micron-sized droplets. As a result of the numerical analyses, the diffusion direction of water when detonating in the central interior part of water tube was radioactive and significantly stronger than when detonating in the bottom exterior part; this is due to the compressive flow of the volume change inside of the water tube, which resulted from the blasting wave inside of the tube, as well as the reflected pressure on the ground. Blast tests of full-scaled reinforced concrete columns were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the suggested detonation-driven water bag burst system. The water breakdown and dispersion that occurred while blasting the reinforced concrete columns were observed using a high-speed camera, and dust generation was monitored using four density detectors. The suggested detonation-driven water bag burst system showed that the average dust density decreased by up to 7 mg/m3.

The rapid determination of uranium in ores by radiometric means was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Among the various procedures and schemes tested, two showed most promise. They were the ratio scheme developed in the Bureau's Tucson, Ariz., laboratory and the equilibrium method developed by the Canadian Department of Mines and Technical Surveys. The ratio method is a simple, empirical procedure for classifying the state of equilibrium in ores by measuring their radioactivity by means of a Geiger-Muller counter under three different conditions, using filters. The principal merit of the method is in providing a clue as to the reliability of equivalent uranium determinations.
